i love my dad he's great, but he is also the most straight white man a person can get. so imagine my utter shock when in the course of one conversation i find out that he reads a webcomic featuring a main plot line about a lesbian couple and his first ever concert was an Erasure concert in the 80s where the crowd consisted of at least 50% gay people in leathers

This post will cover why journalists compared Erasure to PSB, provoking their side of the “rivalry”.
Why “rivalry”? Their feud wasn’t inspired by any personal hate for each other. Even if Andy Bell had struck out first, it didn’t provoke a response from PSB–not yet, at least. Instead, the “rivalry” was largely a creation of journalists, who had started to compare the two groups. (This was already a cliche by 1989, as one article attests.) Usually, these comparisons went one way. There were far, far more articles focused on Erasure that compared them to PSB, than the reverse.
This was due to parallels in both artists’ careers, with Erasure doing many of the same things that PSB had done. In 1988, Erasure worked with producer Stephen Hague; in 1990 and 1992, they put on lavish, theatrical tours with extravagant costumes and lots of dancers. PSB had done all of these things a year earlier. Erasure also resembled PSB, in that they had a bolder, showier singer and a quieter synth player.
These parallels led many critics to assume that Erasure were merely following in PSB’s footsteps. As a result, when they would write pieces on Erasure, they would compare them to PSB. Since critics largely preferred PSB to Erasure, these comparisons were often unfavourable to Erasure. This tendency to compare the two bands shot up dramatically in the 1990s, when they were the only two synth duos of their type who had survived the 80s.
They didn’t just limit it to articles and reviews. They also did it in interviews with Erasure themselves. When interviewers would ask them about PSB, Erasure would have to distinguish themselves and justify why they did things their way. The easiest way for them to do that was by putting themselves up and putting PSB down. That’s where Erasure’s part of the “rivalry” stemmed from–in large part, because of the comparisons. Unlike PSB, Erasure hardly ever commented on their synth-pop peers unless specifically asked to. (Part 1 of 2 - see the other part in the comments)
An important element of the rivalry was class. Critics who put down Erasure in favour of PSB often implied that Erasure were a lower-class version of PSB, such as in the common phrase “poor man’s Pet Shop Boys” (a description Erasure later embraced). In fact, while PSB were middle-class, Erasure WERE working-class–and they pointed to that difference as a way to distinguish themselves. A full look into the class dimensions of Erasure and PSB could easily be its own post. It’s not in the scope of this one, but if you’re interested in reading how class played into the groups’ fanbases, this is explored in an excellent article by Lynsey Hanley, called How I became middle class (The Guardian, 2016).
Comparisons of Erasure to PSB appeared in all sorts of publications–mainstream, indie, and gay. However, the reverse–PSB being compared to Erasure–tended to be limited to the gay press, who noticed other distinctions between the bands. In the next post, we’ll look at the way the gay press treated the two groups, along with PSB’s side of the “rivalry”.

The Dichotomy of Being a Teenage Alex Turner Fan
In this article I look at why I think so many teenage fans direct so much hate towards Miles.
Look at this image search I did on Alex’s name. First person whose name comes up ‘Miles Kane’, first other person he is in another picture with, Miles...before a puff piece about Louise or Taylor. It’s Miles. There are more results with Miles than anyone else. Whether people like it or not, Miles and Alex are intrinsically linked.
In the words of the big man himself ‘stop and wait a sec’...... imagine Miles was Mila, a constant female companion of Alex’s who he had been close to for nearly twenty years. Had been at his side more than any other woman, had done two duets with him and whilst touring the second one, their performances were so sexually charged you thought any moment soon they were actually going to have sex on stage. What would you think? You would think they were or had been in a romantic relationship. And even though you haven’t seen much of them together over the past few years, Mila constantly talks lovingly about Alex in her interviews, and Alex invites Mila to be the support act for the final days of a very long world tour, and on one of the dates he lets Mila stand side-stage (something his official girlfriend doesn’t get to do) and throughout the set he sings to Mila and can’t stop glancing at her. People would be enamoured with their love story and desperate for them to be together.
So why is it different just because Miles is a guy?
Of course there is the obvious. If Alex is gay, then the teenage fans stand no chance with him, which would be upsetting. But even me, as a creaky old Gen X-er, had gay pop stars who were attractive and sexy – Holly Johnson and Paul Rutherford from Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Andy Bell from Erasure, even Boy George got screamed at, but we accepted they were gay and we didn’t stand a chance and that was it.
Of course, there was no social media then, but did we write hateful letters to them or their partners, or put up posters on street corners saying how disgusting they were? (the 80s equivalent to posting all over Twitter) No.
So why the anger towards Miles?
Unfortunately when I was growing up, homophobia was acceptable. Gay people were constantly the butt of jokes, straight comedians would pretend to be effette just for laughs. At school we even had the reprehensible Section 28, imposed by Thatcher’s government where any mention of homosexuality was banned, even books featuring gay characters, to apparently help prevent us from experimenting and catching AIDS (yes I grew up in the Dark Ages)
But there comes the rub. Because homophobia was acceptable, any negative feelings we had towards our gay pop stars or their partners wasn’t something we felt bad about so we felt no need to pick on anyone as a way of dealing with our own conflicted emotions
Fast forward to 2023. Gay people have rights, can marry, have children, are positively represented in the media, we have Pride, which is on the point of becoming too commercialised, and to be homophobic is to most young people not cool or acceptable.
Those same girls who spew hate towards Miles probably paint rainbows on their pencil cases during Pride, have male gay friends at school and would have a go at anyone who doesn’t support trans rights.
But then there is the fact that the celebrity they desire has a constant male companion, who he has been more publicly intimate with then any of the girlfriends he has had. Scratch beneath the surface and you can spot the differences in them when they fell out after EYCTE -both a shell of their former self. When there was a brief break in Lockdown in the UK, who did Alex choose to meet? Miles. Whether the fangirls consciously or subconsciously think there is something going on, it makes them feel uncomfortable with themselves. The presence of Miles Kane makes them realise they’re not necessarily that right-on girl who is into gay rights, because when they actually think about it, and think about what men do, they don’t like it.
But instead of realising that this is just part of being a grown up – we all have things about ourselves we don’t like, they direct their anger and frustration at Miles, as if he didn’t exist then they wouldn’t be confronted by these unpleasant feelings they have.
So, what I am trying to say is whilst I find the comments about Miles disgusting and cruel, just remember with these girls the person they really hate is themselves, while Miles lives his lovely life with his career and his friends and Alex and Maxie.
I think we know who is the winner here.

Here is what i have been listening 2 lately yes im avoiding something no i dont listen to a lot of """new""" music
"This corrosion" the sisters of mercy - nothing revolutionary here, its a goth (sorry eldritch) classic with the big stupid jim steinman bombast that i love. If you want a good time search "andrew eldritch interview" on youtube, he's a huge bitch its so funny
"My lady of mercy" the last dinner party - a cute fizzy indie pop song that splits open into huge, triumphant stoner rock choruses. Its my understanding this band has weathered "industry plant" rumors despite being like, not. Anyway if industry plants made shit like this id be ok w the concept
"Kybalion" killah priest - my friend sold this wu tang associate to me by saying a) he's into the occult, b) not sure if he's actually any good, c) hes making animal noises on the new album. "Hermes trismegestis of lyrics that specialize in physics and pyramids" literally what else do i have to tell you
"Blood makes noise" suzanne vega - i love when a singer songwriter chick has one hard track on her album and this one sounds urgent and clanging and ominous im having a great time
"You aint no celebrity" jungle - everybodys losing their shit over "back on 74," and rightfully so, but this is the ass shaker on the album, its like an update on all those 2000s sean paul hits i liked before i heard at too many bar mitzvahs (it actually knicks the buzzing theremin from "get busy," which was always better than "temperature")
"Naked eye" luscious jackson - 90s crunchy touchy feely divine feminine radical vulnerability nonsense
"Come together" primal scream - these guys were kind of narrowly revolutionary in the 90s and i dont hear anybody under 40 talk abt them ever but i loooove the early 90s uk "what if classic rock was dance" shit that was happening with them and i guess kind of madchester?
"Obsession" animotion - this is the loud obnoxious goofy 80s pop hit all the other ones want to be. The boy-girl vocals are really fun BONUS the singers fell in love and are still married, go look up a recent performance of this song theyre so old and so horny for each other i love it
"The big sky" kate bush + "chains of love" erasure - two very different 80s pop classics, but i listen to them the same way, and frequently right after each other. I have a theory of art and fiction i call, for the moment, "mythological awareness." I use this to refer to work that knows what old folkloric/mythological/archetypal symbols and narratives and images it evokes. Work that knows that any love story is every love story, every mad scientist is a wizard and a shaman and a hacker as well. Kate is singing about the things we pay attention to as children and forget as adults, the sky is a marvel its easy to forget about because its there every day, but that doeant mean its any less a marvel. This might be the most straightforward u2-ish rock single bush ever put out, but it feels like shes marching at the head of an army of zeppelins and airplanes and rockets powered by the laughter of gods. Andy bell of erasure is singing about a fictionalized pre-aids era of gay utopia like its something that used to be real and can be real again if we all clap our hands. He details a world of "sisters and brothers" open to the pleasures of the world, fucking and loving and worrying about what theyll do for dinner rather than whether they can get into the hospital to watch their loved ones die. And over an unstoppable synthesizer bounce, falsetto floating over clouds of gospel-inflected backing vocals, you believe him. He could be talking about atlantis or hobbitton or erewhon or the greek age of heroes and he knows that, the halcyon past is a myth none of us can get away from, maybe we need to understand it and use it rather than disavow it. I was born years after both of these songs hit, and my parents didnt listen to either of these artists, so they come to me fresh and bright and veiled in the light obscuring mist of morning, for me and no one else (everyone else)

ERASURE - World Be Gone
World Be Gone is the 17th studio album by English synthpop duo Erasure. The album was released through Mute Records on 19 May 2017 .
from Wikipedia
The tides leave traces
It’s unbelieveable that the awesome predecessor album ‘The Violet Flame‘ is almost 3 years ago. Time flies like a flight and leaves a melancholic trace. Although the current album ‘World Be Gone’ contains some very nice songs about love and hope, the basic mood is rather oppressive.
The album artwork promises at least graphically hope. The figurehead in the shape of an angel looks confidently towards a glimmering light in the sky. Even if we are currently sailing through the stormy ocean, it’s the hope that dies last. Perhaps it’s only a cliché and cheesy symbol, but it makes my heart feel much warmer.
I love you to the sky, sky, sky …
The opener and the first single “Love You To The Sky” almost screams to become a cheesy radio hit. A song full of romance that I would emotionally compare with the well-known hit ‘The Power Of Love’ by ‘Frankie Goes To Hollywood‘.
It’s pure love, devotion and romance that you feel while listening this song. And not only for the people who live in the pink world that can be seen when you’re freshly in love. In any case, this is one of the most beautiful love songs I’ve heard in a long time.
But let me tell you that ‘Love You To The Sky’ is the most uplifting song on the whole album. It’s catchy and gives the listener an easy access to the new album. For all other tracks I definitely needed a few more attempts, because they are more bleak and the pop factor is less.
When emotions collide
The mood changes quickly with the second number ‘Be Careful What You Wish For!’. I can immediately feel the melancholy that begins to crawl my back upwards. But as serious the song is and as bittersweet it feels, in the same way it’s wonderful brilliant. After an euphoric opener followed by a such sad ballad, let your emotions feel physically the visualized storm on the artwork.
More melancholy drips out of a big jar, also in the album title given track ‘World Be Gone‘. This is a low-tempo ballad about loss and nostalgia. The slow deep beating bass drum brings almost your own heartbeat out of the rhythm.
The number ‘The Bitter Parting’ doesn’t allow the mood bar to go up. Once again followed by a sentimental ballad, which is also important for the album because the album concept is generally very bleak.
The gay rights movement
‘Still It’s Not Over’ is a reminder of their place in the gay rights movement. Even I’m not involved in the gay scene, this track has really touched my heart. It’s also a ballad like the last three songs, but here the mood is quite different. It’s a really charming song that feels uplifting and hopeful.
Memories cut like knives
Singing of a separation from a partner is already hard. But it’s even harder when the life partner died, which has happened to Andy Bell personally. That and the finding of a new love is the story in ‘Sweet Summer Loving’.
So much honesty and profoundness I have never heard in an ‘Erasure’ song before. Probably also the whole basic mood is responsible. Due to the quiet and minimalistic soundscapes, you’ve to deal compulsorily with the serious themes on ‘World Be Gone’.
The voice of the voiceless
‘Oh What A World’ already starts with a rather menacing and alarming sound. But the cool industrial sound fits perfectly with the dystopian theme. Even the beat and the melody dragging themselves with difficulty forward. The anger of the current world situation can be heard acoustically.
Related to the topic follows the track ‘Lousy Sum Of Nothing’. A true heart-breaking song with another serious subject too. It’s about the loss of feeling and empathy in the post-truth age we’re living. The chorus in this song is like a wake call about we all should think about. If a rather unpolitical band like ‘Erasure’ already has lines like: “The World has lost it’s loving”, then there is something seriously wrong.
Love is the answer
The album ‘World Be Gone’ ends like it starts. Here we’ve the second and last upbeat track on this album. Finally, ‘Erasure’ let us breathe again. The slogan is: “Never lose hope!”. ‘Just A Little Love’ is a wonderful Synth Pop song that is absolutely radio-friendly. This song bursts the chains of the built-up melancholy and darkness. It leaves the beautiful, warm feeling to do something good. A bombastic and glorious conclusion of ‘World Be Gone’.
What’s our conclusion?
Well, I guess ‘World Be Gone’ is the most serious and darkest album that we’ve ever heard by Andy Bell and Vince Clark yet. The album explicitly confront the dark forces. In the result, however, it dissolves into love and hope.
The album is understandable and conclusive. We live in gloomy times and the guys of ‘Erasure’ are now also at an age by reflecting the world more closely and revising the past. Let’s hope that the storm will soon settle and the waves will be smooth.
If you’re are expecting a typical easy listening Synth Pop album, then you will be dissapointed. If you don’t close your eyes to reality, feel empathy for all poor souls and hope for a better world, then you will certainly love ‘World Be Gone’. We recommend this marvellous, but unusual ‘Erasure’ album.
from https://electrozombies.com/
Who would have thought that this Erasure album would become so painfully current again in 2020, three years after its release. The issues addressed by this record are terribly current now in this climate of pandemic and terror.
ALBUM OF THE WEEK FOR ME.

disco doesn’t suck, you do! a pride playlist for phineas
1. I Want to Break Free by Queen 2. A Little Respect by Erasure 3. On the Floor by Perfume Genius 4. Do You Really Want to Hurt Me by Boy George 5. I’m Lindana and I Wanna Have Fun by Lindana 6. I’m Your Man by Wham! 7. Love Shack by the B-52s 8. You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) by Dead or Alive 9. Let’s Dance by David Bowie 10. Go West by Village People
Discussion below the cut!
I know what you’re thinking: Emma! You literally did this exact task for Phineas a year ago! (...and I did reuse some songs... shhh) And that is true but I wanted to do it again because I had a vision that was a little clearer and a really specific aesthetic I wanted to talk about that was really important to me in my own journey with queerness that has always kind of been a part of Phineas’s story: queer music, and especially 80s New Wave sound, so I did some more research this year and tried to go for a really specific vibe. Not all of these songs are from the 80s but they all capture something about that era that was really empowering to me and that I think was empowering to Phineas too.
So without further ado... the playlist!
1. I Want to Break Free by Queen
This song both describes the experience of dealing with rigid social structures that make you question who you really are and plays with gender in its music video, which feels super queer. It’s such an anthem for coming into yourself and learning to be proud of who you are. And Freddie Mercury is absolutely a super influential queer icon!
2. A Little Respect by Erasure
THIS SONG. I LOVE THIS SONG. It’s explicitly queer, with openly gay Erasure frontman Andy Bell describing a difficult relationship and just the perfect story of #yearning and frustration with being mistreated by someone you really like. It’s also a straight up bop and really fun to dance to. Phineas has had his share of crushes and awkward relationships, and while he’s never been treated poorly in the way Erasure describes, I can see him feeling seen by this.
3. On the Floor by Perfume Genius
This song actually ISN’T from the 80s, but it has such New Wave vibes that I wanted to include it. There’s so much drama in this song and it’s another one that is explicitly queer in its language, which shouldn’t feel revolutionary, but in the media landscape of the 00s and 10′s, sometimes it can. Also Phineas is a 21st century kid and I don’t think he would listen to ALL 80s music lol
4. Do You Really Want to Hurt Me by Boy George
Another prominent queer figure of the 80s who had a really expansive approach to gender performance and contributed to the queer aesthetics of pop music in the 80s. This song is a little more understated and less synthy than the others on this playlist, so it’s another good #yearning song.
5. I’m Lindana and I Wanna Have Fun by Lindana
Listen I can never resist bringing canon Phineas and Ferb songs into Phineas’s playlists. I have a headcanon that even though Lindana was a one-hit wonder and nobody really remembers her anymore (it’s more of a fun fact than anything and people are like “oh yeah! you’re her! cool!) her song got played a lot in queer spaces and she was an extremely minor icon to some circles. So I hc that a lot of Phineas’s exposure to this genre comes from his mom’s influences and the circles she was in when she was in the music world.
6. I’m Your Man by Wham!
I felt like I just had to put some George Michael on this playlist.  I’m Your Man isn’t the obvious choice (I did consider Freedom! ‘90) but I wanted to stay in the New Wave era and I feel like Freedom is a little bit of a different era (and that makes sense; George Michael went solo in the 90s and brought a different sound). I think this song does the classic thing where it keeps the genders of the subjects of the song ambiguous but you cannot tell me those tambourine flourishes do not have an ENERGY.
7. Love Shack by the B-52s
We’re getting into the portion of the playlist that is all about LOVE and CELEBRATION. That’s what this song is, just a big party. The music video is so colorful and everyone’s in funky clothes and it’s very silly. No drama, no heartbreak, just ppl partying it up and loving who they wanna love.
8. You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) by Dead Or Alive
This one I wasn’t as familiar with, but I can just see Phineas going absolutely wild to this song and dancing around. Dead or Alive, and Pete Burns in particular, were well-known for their creative and over-the-top sets and costumes, and I think that’s really important to Phineas’s understanding of gender and sexuality expression: the ability to be creative!
9. Let’s Dance by David Bowie
Similar vibes here! David Bowie is probably one of the first people who comes to mind when you think queer icons of the 80s, and this song is all about shaking off the bad vibes and having a good time! And I think that’s what this playlist is getting at, and something Phineas really believes: fun and silly music that’s just about dancing and having a good time isn’t fluff, it’s super powerful and meaningful! It’s about embracing your identity and letting go and living life! Disco doesn’t suck, you do!!!
10. Go West by Village People
HEAR. ME. OUT. I know this is the YMCA people. This is more disco than New Wave, but it just felt like the perfect ending to this album. Another really key aspect of queer history is community, and that’s what this song is all about: finding your family, coming together and going to a place where you’ll be able to finally feel free. From what I’ve read on this song (can’t confirm) it’s about a group of queer friends moving to San Francisco to start a new life. And I just think it’s so joyful and all about found family and that’s what Phineas is all about. He decides who his family is, which is an experience a lot of queer people share!

This post will cover the difference in Erasure and Pet Shop Boys’ approaches to sexuality, and how this inspired feelings of animosity between them.
Another major difference between Erasure and Pet Shop Boys was the way they approached homosexuality, and sexuality in general, from 1985 to 1991. While both groups employed a camp aesthetic in their stage shows, they were otherwise very different.
From the start, Erasure were open about their sexualities: one of them was gay and the other was straight. Andy Bell discussed being gay in interviews with all sorts of publications, and was happy to answer questions on the topic. He felt that it was important for musicians to take a stance, and told Seventeen that “being gay and open about it is my substance”. Erasure also supported gay causes more visibly. They played at Pride events, contributed to AIDS fundraisers, gave interviews to the gay press, and spoke out against homophobia, along with bigotry of all kinds.
By contrast, PSB sidestepped questions about their sexualities, and were dismissive when asked directly about the subject. Throughout the 80s, they refused to discuss their “sex lives”, or use the word “gay” to describe themselves. According to some sources, they also avoided speaking to gay journalists, or only did so on the condition that they wouldn’t be asked about their private lives. They saw themselves as musicians, not activists, and objected to the idea of being “role models”. And apart from their appearance at “Before the Act” (an anti-Clause 28 benefit show), they almost never supported gay causes in the public eye. In fact, they often criticized artists who championed social causes.
Writers picked up on the differences in the two bands’ approaches. As early as 1987, they began comparing the groups on this front. At the same time, some gay artists and activists were frustrated by PSB’s silence on their sexualities, and pushed them to come out. Bell was one of those frustrated people, but he was also more sympathetic to PSB than some of their critics. When he talked about PSB to The Advocate in 1988, he acknowledged their fear and believed that they were loosening up on the subject.
By the early 90s, the push for PSB to come out had gotten more intense. Outside their April 1991 concert in Salt Lake City, gay activists handed out leaflets with PSB’s images on them, and there were several articles and quotes from people telling them it was their duty to be out.
This was the context of an interview published in May 1991, with PSB’s Neil Tennant speaking to gay magazine The Advocate–possibly the first time PSB had spoken to the gay press. To provoke Tennant to come out, the interviewer (Richard Laermer) asked him all sorts of questions, including about the criticisms that PSB had faced for not being more political and making pro-gay statements. Tennant said he didn’t admire that approach, and didn’t see PSB’s music as being limited to gays–and then added, “I don’t regard ourselves as being like Erasure.” Laermer hadn’t brought up Erasure at all.
When Laermer challenged him on his words, arguing that young gays were in need of role models, Tennant, who was getting very worked up, fired back, “I don’t agree with the concept of role models. I don’t. How could anyone say he’s a role model?” He was likely referring to Bell–who had never called himself a role model, but had been far more outspoken than PSB about gay causes and the need to come out.
These unprovoked jabs at Erasure were common for PSB, and made up their side of the “rivalry”. In the next post, we’ll examine their side, plus the ways the “rivalry” played out in bands’ fanbases.

It’s Not Over Till It’s Over: Sean Hayes Talks ‘Will & Grace’
Where would our queer world be without Will & Grace?
That’s where my head was just before Sean Hayes phoned, recalling my lonely teen years, when gay white men on TV alone — here’s to evolved representation! — was unprecedented and life-changing for people like 15-year-old, closeted me.
It’s not enough, then, to say Hayes, 48, portrays Jack McFarland on the NBC sitcom, because some roles become legend, upstaging even the actor giving him life. Jack is one such character.
And so, a call from Hayes is like being a kid and spotting your fifth-grade teacher at the grocery store: It doesn’t quite feel real. And yet Hayes is a real man with a real life and even a real husband, music producer Scott Icenogle. But to the late-’90s TV landscape, it was the actor’s half-fiction as Jack and his exploding-rainbow persona that cut through heteronormative programming with gay jokes even your grandma could get down with.
And then, there’s Karen.
You obviously don’t need me to needlessly ramble on about Jack’s socialite best friend (played by Megan Mullally), who never met a martini she didn’t like. You know her, you love her. And together they truly make all of our friends out to be absolute fucking bores. The sitcom’s recent revival reinstated #friendshipgoals when the snarky pals, along with titular housemates Will (Eric McCormack) and Grace (Debra Messing), came swishing back to NBC in September 2017 for a ninth season after ending its initial 1998–2006 run.
Hayes isn’t Jack, exactly. But you might be fooled if he called you, too. His usually-unflashy voice sometimes picks up wind and takes on the kind of rapid-fire cadence his famous Cher-worshiping alter ego is known for. With Season 10 premiering October 4 and Season 9 now available on DVD and digital, I caught up with Hayes to talk about those who’ve long criticized Jack for being “stereotypically” gay, the history of the legendary Karen-Jack slap fights, and who helped him be OK with being gay.
It’s hard to put into words exactly what it feels like to talk to the man who gave me such an iconic gay character when I needed it most.
Oh my god. That’s so sweet. I really appreciate that. And you just answered the reason why when people ask me what’s the best part about playing it — that’s the best part.
Is it?
One-hundred percent.
When did you first realize Will & Grace had impacted the LGBTQ community the way it has?
Just a couple of weeks ago! [Laughs.] No, I’m joking. You know what’s so funny — first of all, you have no idea how much that means to me, you saying how much I mean to you. It means equally as much to me, so thank you.
So when did I know I had an impact? I think when I was young and doing the show I was so wrapped up in myself, in acting, in getting the part: “Am I going to get fired? Am I gonna learn my lines?” I was just happy to have a job.
It’s such a fascinating thing to discuss, and I’m so glad you asked. I felt normal growing up, so when I got a job, playing a gay character on a television sitcom I just thought, “Oh, I just have to be me, kind of, a heightened version of myself.” I didn’t think it would have that much of an impact because of the bubble I grew up in. I surround myself with people who are accepting of me, so naively I was like, “The rest of the world must be OK with it.”
I mean, I knew the stories [about homophobia] out there. I grew up and knew [being gay] wasn’t accepted, but I just didn’t think on any big level it was any big deal. So, that gave me the confidence to play Jack as outrageously as I could because, again, I’m surrounded by writers and actors — everybody else — who embrace this, so I felt loved, I felt supported and I felt confidence. So, I wasn’t heading to work thinking about how this is going to affect anybody.
[That] was a wonderful byproduct later, and I was like, “Oh, ohh!” And once it started, and all the press and blah blah blah, and we never got any backlash for being political in that sense, meaning how they politicized gay people, which is wrong. That’s another interview.

Over the years, people have criticized Jack for being “flamboyant.” How aware were you of that concern when the show returned for its revival season?
Oh, I never heard that. This is the first time hearing it. So, you’re saying people were worried, but I was playing him — I call it “outrageous” because “flamboyant” means a certain type of gay person, I think, and that’s another conversation to have. I was playing him as outrageously as I was before. So, people were concerned that I was playing him a certain way?
People wondered if Jack was too stereotypical for TV in 2018 and expressed some concern over what the straight community might think of us.
I think that’s [internalized] homophobia. Because I know people like Jack, because one part of me is like Jack, and so if you’re saying people in the gay community were concerned that I was playing Jack a certain way and people would “worry” that gay people act like that, they do act like that. And there’s people who act like Will. There are people on all spectrums of human behavior in the gay community, just like there are people on all spectrums of human behavior in the straight community, so I nix that, and I say “bye” to that — I say, “Bye, Felicia!” — because that doesn’t make any sense to me.
Similarly, the character of Cam on Modern Family was criticized for being an over-the-top and exaggerated version of what a gay person is. And I’m like, what exactly is a gay person supposed to be in 1998 or 2018?
Yeah, exactly. What are they supposed to be? And by the way, they are exaggerated, some of them. And so are straight people. Look at Jim Carrey, look at Robin Williams. There are lots of straight people who are exaggerated as well. I hate that argument — no, I’m glad you brought it up. I’m just saying I love talking about it, because it’s ridiculous.
As a kid coming to terms with being gay, who was your person?
If you’re talking about a famous person, Andy Bell [of Erasure]. Because I was in college and I was 17, 18, and I was shocked that somebody was out and proud, making a living in the arts or in pop culture by being who they are and not apologizing for it. I thought that was mind-blowing. “A Little Respect” was the No. 1 song on the radio, and I was like, “Wait, the guy is gay, and everybody is OK with that?”
The truth is, not a lot of people knew [Bell was gay] because we didn’t have the internet. But I knew, and all my gay friends knew. And I was like, “That’s amazing.” So that was inspiring to me, that you could be gay and make a living by singing, acting, whatever.
What has it been like to be a part of a show that has existed during two very different times, culturally and politically, for the LGBTQ community?
First, I feel very fortunate and lucky to be part of the chorus of the movement. I may not be a single voice, but I’m enjoying being a part of the chorus. And I think we’re lucky to have the voice and the representation for people to talk about it again, because I don’t think it should ever stop being talked about because everything is not OK. There are still gay kids being bullied. Look at that [gay] couple [that was assaulted] in Florida in the bathroom during [Miami Beach Gay] Pride. It just doesn’t end. The hate doesn’t end overnight.
So, we have to keep doing things, and again, my contribution may not be as an activist, because I just don’t feel comfortable doing that, it’s not who I am. It’s not in my blood, it’s not in my DNA to stand at a podium and speak in sound bites about how we need to prevail over the government and the system. I leave that to people who are good at it — I’m not good at it.
What I’m good at is being comfortable in my own skin and showing people that I have a husband, and we make stupid Facebook videos and try to show people that we’re as normal as any other human. I try to do my best at that.
So, I’m happy the show is back because there’s still tons of work to do. The power of comedy is so incredible; that’s why we broke so many boundaries the first time. And hopefully we can continue to do that.
Megan Mullally has said that you’re her “second husband,” after her real husband, Nick Offerman. How does your chemistry with Megan after all these years compare to the first time that you stepped onto set and shot the pilot?
It’s so funny that she calls me her second husband because Nick and I were born on the exact same day, same year, about 30 miles apart. Isn’t that hilarious?
But it’s like working with your sister. There’s a shorthand that nobody else would understand. So, it’s like, “I’m gonna do this,” and she’s like, “I’m gonna do that,” and then we just do it together. And there it is. So, we now know how to cut through all the stuff that you need to [cut through] to get to a comedic moment in a scene. And that’s what’s great about all this time that’s passed: I understand her, she understands me, we understand each other, so the chemistry has only gotten hotter.
Tell me the history of the slap fights between Karen and Jack.
There’s an episode called “Coffee and Commitment,” where Jack is trying to get off of coffee and Karen’s trying to quit alcohol. That was the first time we slapped each other. On paper, it was just, “Karen slaps Jack, Jack slaps Karen.” But of course, [Will & Grace Director] Jimmy Burrows, who is incredible at physical comedy, said, “Let’s make a dance out of this.”
So, we rehearsed the rhythm of it. I think that’s what makes you laugh — that’s what makes me laugh: the pauses and then the slapping again and then the pause and the slap-slap. It’s music, so you have to rehearse the beats and the rhythms in order to get that. [Laughs.] It makes me laugh even thinking about it.
What do you envision for Jack’s future?
Well, I don’t want him to change too much because our friends are our friends from high school because they never change, right? Maybe get married, but still remain Jack somehow, or find a long-term relationship. Or maybe — maybe! — there’s someone close in his own life that might be a suitable partner for life. Who knows?
Will?
I have no idea.
Could you see them together?
Could I see Will and Jack together? Maybe!
You’ve said you want to see him with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. Just so you know, I’m here for it.
I think that would be a hilarious episode, and I hope Dwayne comes to his senses and comes to the Will & Grace [set] to play and have a good time.
