Heroics from Lamb, Sciver power England to five-wicket win over South Africa in first ODI
Jul 12, 2022 10:07 IST Northampton , July 12 (Always First): A brilliant century from Emma Lamb and an all-round performance from Nat Sciver powered England to a five-wicket win over South Africa in the first ODI of the three-match series at Northampton on Monday. With this, England has taken a 1-0 lead in the series. Batting first, South Africa was bundled out for 218 in 47.4 overs. Chloe Tryon (88), Laura Wolvaardt (43) were the top two batters for South Africa. Nat Sciver destroyed the South African batting with her medium-pace, taking 4/59. Chasing 219, England's chase was largely powered by Lamb (102), Nat Sciver (55). The hosts chased down the total in just 32.1 overs. Nadine de Klerk was the pick of the bowlers for the visitors with her 2/44. Batting first, South Africa was off a shaky start as they lost Andrie Steyn for 14 after she was trapped leg-before-wicket by Katherine Brunt. Brunt cleaned up Lara Goodall for five next with captain Heather Knight taking a good catch at slip, sinking visitor to 2/34. Captain Sune Luus and Laura Wolvaardt tried to rebuild things for SA, but Luus was sent packing by spinner Sophie Ecclestone for 7 after her stumps were castled, sinking the side to 3/52. Marizanne Kapp also fell for 12 to Sciver after a brilliant catch by Kate Cross at mid-on. Following this fourth wicket at 73, Wolvaardt and Tryon stitched a short 35-run stand, which ended with the former being clean bowled by spinner Charlie Dean for a well-made 43 off 72. Half of the South African side was back in the hut for 108. Tryon and Nadine de Klerk rescued the visitors from sinking further, forming a 97-run stand. They left the hosts struggling to get wickets for a while. Tryon reached his half-century and kept piling runs, but she lost her wicket to Sciver after giving a catch to Cross at deep-midwicket. The rest of the batters could not give Klerk the support she needed. She was the last batter to fall for 38 at 218 runs. Sciver (4/59) and Katherine Brunt (3/18) were leading bowlers for England. Ecclestone and Dean got a wicket each. Chasing 219, England lost Tammy Beaumont for one run after Kapp lured her to drive and castled her stumps. A 78-run stand between Lamb and Sophia Dunkley followed. It ended with Klerk trapping Dunkley leg-before-wicket for 22. England were at 86/2. Sciver and Lamb put the hosts out of the game with another massive partnership, putting on 89-runs together. Sciver completed her fifty and continued her dominance in the match. Sciver lost her wicket after scoring 55, taking England to 175 runs. 44 runs were left to be scored with around half the inning still left. Lamb reached her century and fell for 102 runs at the score of 202 to Tumi Sekhukhune. Captain Heather Knight (20) and Danii Wyatt (14*) took the team to the finishing line, with over 17 overs to spare. England won the match by five wickets and Lamb's brilliant ton earned her the 'Player of the Match' title. Brief Scores: South Africa: 218 in 47.4 overs (Chloe Tryon 88, Laura Wolvaardt 43, Nat Sciver 4/59) lost to England: 219/5 in 32.1 overs (Emma Lamb (102, Nat Sciver 55, Nadine de Klerk 2/44) by five wickets. 3rd ODI, ICC Women's Championship at Potchefstroom, Feb 10 2018 | Match Report
South Africa women 241 for 3 (du Preez 90*, Wolvaardt 59, van Niekerk 41*) beat India women 240 (Deepti 79, Krishnamurthy 56, Ismail 4-30, Tryon 2-48) by seven wickets

India’s quest for a maiden bilateral series whitewash against South Africa was thwarted by the hosts with a resounding seven-wicket win in Potchefstroom. Laura Wolvaardt and Mignon du Preez, who both struck half-centuries, played protagonists in South Africa’s first win in the three-match series, aided by a brisk 41-run cameo from captain Dane van Niekerk and India’s sloppiness in the end overs of their 240-run defence.
Needing 63 off the last nine overs, and the fourth-wicket stand between du Preez and Niekerk worth only nine runs, Shikha Pandey dropped a Niekerk force at mid-off off the first ball of the 42nd over. Four balls later, legspinner Poonam Yadav gave herself a chance of picking up her second wicket and India a shot at sending back du Preez, only to be squandered by wicketkeeper Sushma Verma in the form of a missed stumping. When Poonam came back in the 44th to bowl her ninth over, she dropped a return catch off van Niekerk, who subsequently unleashed a flurry of drives and sweeps – some while falling on her knee – and peppered the square-leg boundary for quick runs. She totaled five fours in her unbeaten 30-ball innings, while routinely capitalising on overthrows from India in the back-end of the chase.
Van Niekerk’s ingenuity amounted to a 72-run stand with du Preez, who anchored the chase with an unbeaten 111-ball 90 that steered a 118-run third-wicket partnership with 18-year-old Wolvaardt. Coming into the game on the back of scores 9 and 21 in the previous two ODIs, Wolvaardt weathered the early loss of opening partner Lizelle Lee, and put on 41 runs with Andrie Steyn (30 off 53) en route to her 88-ball 59. In doing so, Wolvaardt became the youngest South African to notch up 1000 runs in ODI cricket. After Ekta Bisht removed Wolvaardt, du Preez kept the chase on track with plucky singles, including the one that sealed the chase with four balls to spare.
Out of the three changes made to India’s winning combination from the previous two matches, debutant Pooja Vastrakar, the teenage medium-pacer who came in for Jhulan Goswami, and Bisht, who replaced fellow left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad, leaked 77 runs between them for a solitary wicket in their combined 18 overs. The other change – in the batting department – Mona Meshram, who came in for Punam Raut, pinched 11 in her 22-ball labour during an India innings that blew hot and cold in their 240-run effort.
While Smriti Mandhana, the Player of the Series, followed her 135 and 84 with a duck, captain Mithali Raj fell for a 24-ball 4 as both found themselves in the middle of a blistering opening burst from Ayabonga Khaka and Shabnim Ismail, who topped and tailed her 9-1-30-4 with the wickets of Mandhana and tailender Bisht. Deepti Sharma, however, validated Raj’s decision to promote her to the opening role with a 112-ball 79. After van Niekerk brought Harmanpreet Kaur’s 35-ball 25 to an end, Deepti steadied India’s innings with an 83-run stand with Veda Krishnamurthy, becoming the youngest Indian to get to the 1000-run mark in women’s ODIs.
Krishnamurthy, meanwhile, added urgency to the innings with a quick-paced second straight fifty, before a run-a-ball 17 from Verma and 31-run blitz from Pandey hoisted India to 240 as the hosts bowled them out off the last ball of the innings, concluded by part-time bowler Chloe Tryon who took two wickets in her 10 overs.

India Women Eye Series Win Against South Africa In 2nd ODI
After a stellar present within the series-opener, the Indian ladies’s cricket crew would now look to seal the problem when it takes on South Africa within the second ODI of the three-match sequence on Wednesday. Seven months after a stupendous present within the World Cup, the Indian ladies’s crew shook off rustiness with ease with a crushing 88-run win over South Africa within the series-opener on Monday. The three-match sequence, additionally a first-round fixture of the ICC Women’s Championship, offers each the groups an opportunity to instantly qualify for the 2021 ICC Women’s World Cup.
After a runner-up end within the World Cup, Mithali Raj and her crew didn’t play any worldwide video games — due to lackadaisical planning on the a part of the BCCI.
And the continued three-match sequence in opposition to South Africa was thought-about a giant problem for the Indians to get again into the groove. But within the first ODI, the Indian ladies by no means appeared wanting match follow as they shone brilliant in all departments to comfortably outclass the house crew.
Electing to bat, the Indian ladies rode on left-handed batswoman Smriti Mandhana’s (84 off 98) half-century and skipper Mithali Raj’s 45 to submit 213 for seven earlier than the tempo duo of Jhulan Goswami (four/24) and Shikha Pandey (three/23) shared seven wickets between them to bundle out South Africa for 125. Leg-break bowler Poonam Yadav too excelled with the ball registering figures of two for 22 from her 9 overs.
All in all, it was a whole efficiency from the Indians within the opener and are available tomorrow, Mithali and her crew could be eying an encore, which is able to hand them an unassailable 2-Zero lead within the sequence.
South Africa, then again, could be upset with their batting effort after being shot out for simply 125 in 43.2 overs. The hosts did not capitalise on the end-of-innings momentum offered by their bowlers and slipped to 23 for 3 after Lizelle Lee (three), Trisha Chetty (5) and Mignon du Preez (Zero) all fell cheaply.
Captain Dane van Niekerk managed 41, however she lacked the required assist from the opposite finish.
There had been additionally begins for Laura Wolvaardt (21), Kapp (23) and Sune Luus (21 not out), however they weren’t sufficient.
The South African bowlers — two wickets every by Marizanne Kapp (2/26) and Ayabonga Khaka (2/47) — helped the house aspect claw their approach again into sport after Mandhana and her Raj placed on 99 for the second wicket.
But their batswomen appeared a pale shadow of themselves in entrance of the Indian assault.
And if South Africa want to take the sequence into the decider their batting must complement the bowlers to face in with an opportunity to unsettle the Indians.
India: Mithali Raj (capt), Taniya Bhatia (wicket- keeper), Ekta Bisht, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Jhulan Goswami, Harmanpreet Kaur (vice-captain), Veda Krishnamurthy, Smriti Mandhana, Mona Meshram, Shikha Pandey, Punam Raut, Jemimah Rodrigues, Deepti Sharma, Pooja Vastrakar, Sushma Verma (wicket-keeper) and Poonam Yadav.
South Africa: Dane van Niekerk (capt), Marizanne Kapp, Trisha Chetty, Shabnim Ismail, Ayabonga Khaka, Masabata Klaas, Sune Luus, Laura Wolvaardt, Mignon du Preez, Lizelle Lee, Chloe Tryon, Andrie Steyn, Raisibe Ntozakhe and Zintle Mali.

DANE VAN NIEKERK KNOWS SOUTH AFRICA HAS TO BE AT ITS BEST TO BEAT ENGLAND has been published at http://www.theleader.info/2017/07/04/dane-van-niekerk-knows-south-africa-best-beat-england/
New Post has been published on http://www.theleader.info/2017/07/04/dane-van-niekerk-knows-south-africa-best-beat-england/
DANE VAN NIEKERK KNOWS SOUTH AFRICA HAS TO BE AT ITS BEST TO BEAT ENGLAND
South Africa captain Dane van Niekerk: “The cricket so far in the tournament has been amazing, the skills have gone up ten-fold”
England skipper Heather Knight: “They’ve got a few slightly quicker bowlers than we have faced in the last two games”
The match can be watched live on Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports Mix, its website and app in the UK; on SuperSport2, SuperSport6 Africa, Supersport.com and its app in South Africa
Pre-match audios, photographs from England v South Africa match and post-match video interviews to be available at the Online Media Zone
South Africa has one of the best bowling attacks at the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup but captain Dane van Niekerk knows the side cannot afford to ease off ahead of a clash with host England.
The Proteas travel to Bristol on Wednesday hoping to make it three wins from as many completed games, having thrashed the West Indies by 10 wickets on Sunday.
With the world’s No.1 bowler, Marizanne Kapp, South Africa was always going to be a threat with the ball, and that showed in Leicester as the Windies side was skittled for 48.
Van Niekerk produced remarkable figures by grabbing four wickets without conceding a run in the game, but knows that beating the host will be another challenge entirely.
She said: “We know how good England are, bowling and batting wise. But the girls have been working really hard in the nets and it’s about applying ourselves, we know we are going to face some tough bowling up front but our whole team is working very hard to go about winning every game.
“We know it is going to be a very tough one and you don’t want to be complacent at all and the most important thing is to stay on top of our game. We spoke about it and must not get ahead of ourselves, we know we still have to face some very tough opposition.
“We don’t want to underestimate anyone, the last thing we want to do is put our feet up after two good performances, it’s a very long tournament. We have come here to win a World Cup.
“The cricket so far in the tournament has been amazing, the skills have gone up ten-fold. I think there is going to be a lot of exciting games to come in the competition.”
After three games apiece, five teams seem to be vying for four semi-final spots, meaning that Wednesday’s game will be crucial for the hopes of both teams.
England slipped up in the opener against India, but has since responded with convincing wins over Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
South Africa should be another step up though, and captain Heather Knight is well-aware of the threat of the bowling attack her team will face.
She said: “We’ll be expecting a bit more pace on the ball compared to Sri Lanka, they’ve got a few slightly quicker bowlers than we have faced in the last two games, maybe slightly less spin.
“With the bat they’ve got some really destructive players, we’ve got a few days to prepare for that. I think the way we bowled (on Sunday) is really pleasing, after seeing how good a pitch it was, I didn’t realise how well we had bowled and how well we defended that total, getting those plans in place and executing them again is going to be key in the next game.”
In South Africa, the match will be live on SuperSport 2, SuperSport6 Africa, Supersport.com and its app, while it can be watched live in the United Kingdom on Sky Sports 1, Sky Sports Mix, its website and app. For further information, please contact your local listings.

MEDIA RELEASE 11 MAY 2017
Vrystaat Literature Festival: HOMECOMING
The growth in the 2017 Vrystaat Literature Festival is testament to the vibrancy of this blossoming writers’ oasis in the heart of South Africa. The festival will now reach an even wider audience with more than 60 presentations scheduled in the week from 17 to 22 July in Bloemfontein, South Africa. The theme for this year is Homecoming.
Professor Francis Petersen, Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Free State comments: ‘The Vrystaat Literature Festival is one of the brightest literary platforms on the South African cultural calendar. In just one year, it has cemented its place in the hearts of thousands of South Africans and international writers. The UFS is proud to have been the founding sponsor of the festival, and even prouder that we can support it in the long-term.’
Annalize Dedekind, Chair of the Vrystaat Arts Festival adds: ‘We are very excited about the 2017 Vrystaat Literature Festival. After its successful maiden voyage in 2016 it now boasts a list of international writers from amongst others Romania, Iran, Kenya, the Netherlands and Zambia in addition to the big names of the South African literary world. You cannot afford to miss any of these discussions!’
During a long table discussion, writers such as Braam de Vries, Daniel Hugo, Ace Moloi, Alfred Schaffer, Niq Mhlongo, Willem Anker and many more will kickstart discussions on what the highly charged notion of Homecoming means in our current political climate.
Ruda Landman, well-known television presenter and journalist, will also be part of the festival, beginning each day with discussions of current affairs. This includes an in-depth interview with Helen Zille about her political career and recent challenges; a talk with Bill Nasson and Hennie van Vuuren about what we should learn from history; a contemplation about the preservation of our fragile democracy with Richard Pithouse, Niren Telsi and Ralph Mathekga; as well as an interview with Thandeka Gqubule about her autobiography on the former public protector, Thuli Madonsela.
Through the Homage to Heroes series, the contributions of writers we cannot afford to forget are celebrated, including Thomas Mfolo, Adam Small, Jans Rautenbach and Dot Serfontein. After the great success of the first Sol Plaatje memorial lecture, Antjie Krog, recently honoured with another Hertzog Prize, will present the second annual lecture, introduced by Professor Francis Petersen.
During gripping panel discussions various trends in literature will be considered. In the session Crime novels – where do we stand? writers such as Mike Nicol, Martin Steyn and Bettina Wyngaard consider how the crime genre developed after 1994 in South Africa. Michael le Cordeur and Wannie Carstens are in conversation, along with other contributors to their book Ons kom van vêr, about the neglected brown voice in Afrikaans; and non-fiction writers Antony Altbeker, Paul McNally and Ace Moloi in Nothing but the truth? talk about how ‘reality’ is documented. In Who writes on whose behalf? the ethical implications of the documentation of the living spheres of communities outside of the writer’s frame of reference is considered.
This year’s festival again offers a range of opportunities for upcoming writers and poets to hone their skills. Henning Pieterse and Francois Smith – both from the University of the Free State’s Department of Afrikaans, Dutch, German and French – will present intensive workshops on the writing of poetry and prose respectively. There will also be workshops for performance poets, as well as the launch of the book Hallo Hekel!, which will be presented in conjunction with a crocheting workshop.
Crossword enthusiasts can brace themselves for the second national Crossword Tournament following last year’s surprise festival hit, presented in conjunction with RSG and XWord.
Popular culinary writers are also part of the programme and festivalgoers can look forward to the session with Riana Scheepers, Leonie Scholtz and Marietjie Koekemoer, Smeul: drie vroue, een kombuis. These writers prepare traditional food with a twist, while Koelsoem Kamalie and Flori Schrikker share mouth-watering recipes from their latest book, Soettand.
This year poets, writers and musicians also join together to create new sounds and performance experiences for audiences. In Klawer, kwatryn & konkas celebrated poet Gilbert Gibson takes a seat at the piano and musician Riku Lattï and his team interweave Afrikaans and Sesotho music, while the Iranian/Dutch writer Sander Terphuis lets loose with his famous break dance. Alfred Schaffer, Toast Coetzer, Danie Marais, Ihette Jacobs, Tinus van Staden, Hennie van Coller and Adél Steyn perform some of their poems.
Upcoming poets could walk away with generous prizes during the Naked Poetry Slam, where the best slam poet will be chosen. Bibi Slippers, Eugene Marais prize winner for poetry in 2017, will recite some of her work, in addition to Andries Bezuidenhout, Mbongeni Nomkhonwana, Anele Kose, Ashley Makue, Chisenga Fundanga and Tessa Muller. During these sessions poetry will be interwoven with dynamic Afro-futuristic sounds to create a unique South African experience.
In addition to Terphuis, the following international writers will be part of the Literature Festival this year: Christine Otten (Netherlands), Rob van der Veer (Netherlands), Joseph Boyden (Canada), Mira Fetichu (Romania), Zukiswa Wanner (Kenia), Leshie Lovesong (Botswana) and Chisenga Dumisani Fundanga (Zambia).
The sessions are presented at the ATKV-Boeke-Oase (Centenary Complex on the UFS Campus), the National Afrikaans Literary Museum and Research Centre (NALN), as well as UFS Filmstudio. Du Preez, Wolvaardt, Ismail deny India ODI whitewash
