The Breakfast Club members at the beach
Tumblr media
Warnings: swearing, smoking/weed usage mentioned
A/N: just got back from my vacation at the beach and since I wrote nothing while I was gone (oops) I decided to do it now
Tumblr media
Claire Standish
Her parents definitely own some sort of vacation home on a private piece of land that she visits every summer (rich people things yknow)
Usually stays on a towel by the shoreline. She doesn't get in the water and if she does it's only to dip her feet in so she doesn't get her hair or makeup messed up
She'll flip through a magazine or something while waiting for the sun to give her the perfect nautral tan
Andrew Clark
He loves the beach but I think he spends more time in the hotel's gym than by the actual ocean since his dad's so strict about him staying in shape even during the summer
Totally the type of person to get up at the fucking ass crack of dawn just to run down to the very end of the shoreline and back. Man's crazy
Extra snacks must be packed if you're going with him because otherwise he'll eat them all in the first day of being there since he needs the calories
Brian Johnson
Poor boy's so overworked from school he has no idea how to relax properly, if his parents would let him that is
Even when on vacation he's still copying notes down from textbooks and flipping through flashcards for stuff that's not getting learned in school until the new year rolls around
He probably sneaks away at some point to use his (really shitty) fake ID to buy some edibles at one of the boardwalk shops to help him calm down some. The cashier is either too stoned to notice he's not twenty one or just doesn't care
John Bender
His reasons for going to the beach are pretty simple: weed and hot people (both guys and girls). Believe me when I say he can and will shamlessly ogle anyone he finds attractive when walking on the boardwalk
Pretty much all he does when there is get high. He has no need to visit any of the shops (other than the cannabis ones) and the beach itself doesn't interest him much
It entirely possible that he might just hang around the boardwalk the entire time, smoking a blunt while flirting with anyone who might pass him by
Allison Reynolds
She takes a couple different busses to go down there for a day trip as she doesn't have anything better to do
Might walk around the boardwalk for a bit, checking out the stores and stealing borrowing from a few of them, stuffing anything she likes that's small enough to carry into her purse
In the evening she sits on the shoreline with her sketchbook and doodles the sunset before heading back home
Tumblr media
End notes: I promise I'm working on my asks and stuff okay I just tend to get distracted easily and forget

would you do the different breakfast club members with a clingy/overprotective yandere s/o who kind of acts like their parent? thank you ^-^
They each desperately need some kind of a good parental figure in their lives, even if it's from a s/o with yandere qualities lol
Tw: yandere/dark content, gender neutral reader, the reader acts more like a parental figure than a partner in some cases, overprotective/clingy behavior displayed by the reader
Claire Standish
She acts like the typical bratty rich girl who's used to getting what she wants. What do you mean she can't go to that party? Who are you to tell her who she can and can't hang out with?
She typically "rebels" against you by doing the exact opposite of what you said, until she realizes that, surprise surprise, you were right all along. Not that she'd ever admit it, of course
On the surface she acts really annoyed by how overprotective and clingy you are, but secretly she loves having someone who actually cares about her wellbeing and isn't just trying to get back at someone when you tell her not to do something
Andrew Clark
He's pretty used to people telling him what to do, meaning he's not very good at thinking for himself. Imagine his surprise when you encourage him to start making his own decisions
Of course you have your own opinion on what he should or shouldn't do, but why should that matter? He's his own person, which you slowly help him realize over time
He doesn't really need someone to constantly look out for him (hello, he's an athlete, he can beat someone up if he really needs to) but he definitely appreciates having someone to remind him that wrestling isn't everything
Brian Johnson
He so desperately needs someone who cares about him for more than just his grades, the poor baby. Even if you just offer to help him with his homework he'll be eternally grateful
Honestly, he trusts you so much. You could tell him to take the day off and not worry about school and he actually will because he knows you'll end up getting his work done for him
He finds how much you watch over him to be very endearing because unlike his parents you actually care about him and not just his grades. He barely even notices how attached you are because he's just as bad
John Bender
I love him but he's one you'll have to drag kicking and screaming if you want to properly care for him because newsflash, he doesn't need anybody and can look out for himself
He gets so pouty whenever you lay down ground rules on things (how often he gets detention, when he needs to eat, etc.) and will flat out refuse to listen to you unless you start to ignore him
You're eventually able to wear down his rough exterior and get to his soft inside because deep down he wants to be cared for the way you do for him, even if he acts like a brat for it most of the time
Allison Reynolds
She's so sweet, you could tell her to set her house on fire and she probably would if you promised to give her attention (please don't actually tell her that though because she will do it)
As long as you spend time with her she's pretty content to listen to you. Occasionally she "acts out" or whatever but it's more to push your buttons than it is to actually misbehave
Her clinginess rivals even yours as she has to be around you pretty much all the time or she'll get upset. Even if you have to get groceries or run errands she'll gladly tag along just so she can be near you

Imagine baby Clarke coming to visit george on his tour, would defo be either a london show or Bristol, baby girl would be so confused but happy to see her daddy either way ❤️❤️❤️😭😭
pleeeeeeease, that's adorable!!
before the show, george can't put her down.
with george and max travelling for two weeks, all around the country, they deemed it unfair to make their little lady travel long distances to be able to be with and see her daddy everyday... so they decided that yn and baby girl clarkey would come and attend the most important show - the final london date in may.
he walks around backstage with her on his hip, showing her off to all his production crew, disappearing out on stage to show her just what daddy did when he wasn't at home, as yn stays in the dressing room with max and andrew and the two arthur's and he really takes in the moment before him. the empty shepherds bush venue, the set-up for their last show for the podcast tour, the way that the silence would soon before filled with the cheers and the screams of those that were excited to come and see him and his best friend waffle nonsense on stage for over an hour.
"you've been very quiet today."
he turns on his heels and looks into the wings of the stage, seeing his girlfriend stood with her very own useless hotline t-shirt tucked into her ripped jeans, a grin on his lips.
"i'm just feeling very happy today," he says, adjusting his daughter on his hip as she plays with the chain of his necklace hanging around his neck, "the last sold out show, the last night, and i've got all the best people in my life here tonight. my best friends, my girlfriend and my baby."
"you're not going to cry, are you? because i'm still an emotional wreck from having our little one so you need to pre-warn me if there will be any tears. she may be almost one but i'm still such a huge hormonal monster inside," she laughs softly, wrapping her arm around his waist and squeezing him against her side, "you deserve all of this, george. i'm so proud of you."
"it feels so surreal, still," he wraps his free arm around her shoulders and presses a kiss to her forehead, "thank you for being here tonight. i know it's tough with the little one and all."
"we wouldn't miss it for the world," she tells him and he can't wipe the silly grin on his face, "we'll be sat backstage, waiting for you to come back, so we can all celebrate for a bit. i'm guessing you're out after the show tonight?"
he nods.
"max has booked out a club for us. you sure you don't want to get a babysitter and come along?"
yn shakes her head and pinches her little girl's cheek, "you deserve to celebrate tonight, okay? i'll wait up for you though, in case you need some assistance up those stairs."
he chuckles softly and shakes his head. there's commotion that went on behind them as the crew continued setting up the stage, adding the finishing touches to everything before the show went ahead, and it felt like their moment to start moving backstage so they had the room to carry on. walking slowly back to the dressing room, greeting people on the way back, entering the room to see everyone tucking in to some pre-show pizza that had been brought in.
"pizza for everyone," max grins widely as he held a crust to a pizza slice in his hand, tomato sauce smeared around his lips and across his teeth, "grab it before the human dustbin grabs some."
he looks at george with a smirk and all george can do is rolls his eyes back at him, "i am not a dustbin. i just really love pizza, okay? and yn knows that already, idiot."
baby clarke gets a little agitated when george says goodbye and does a little wave in her direction, pressing a kiss to her forehead before a kiss is placed on yn's lips, and she cries for just a moment until arthur (frederick) takes her from yn, to which she passes her over, and gives her a little cuddle to fill in the void of missing her dad.
"come to your funcle, baby clarkey," he grins widely, setting her on his hip and forgetting the plastic cup full of his alcoholic beverage, "shall we go watch daddy from the side of the stage?"
"please be careful with her, okay?" yn warns him gently and arthur smiles softly, lifting up baby clarkey's fist and waving in yn's direction, "you're an idiot."
"i promise i'll bring her back soon, yn. she'll be okay with me," arthur promises and yn smiles softly, settling herself in the chair that was once george's as he got himself ready for the night, her eyes looking up at the television screen that showed what was happening out on the stage, "back before the interval, you have my word."
and once the show had ended, and arthur's performing his two songs to close out the night for everyone, yn joins them on stage with baby clarkey on her hip as they dance along to the music. joe is out on the stage first, followed by andrew, and arthur's a little reluctant to show his face out there until yn agrees to follow him out and he follows her close behind.
and as soon as george sees them, he's reaching for his little girl so he can have a little dance and a boogie with her, which leaves yn with max and andrew as arthur blasts his lungs out with his new song. and baby clarke loves every second of the time on stage; giggling, waving at people as george shows her what to do, kicking her legs out and it makes people in the audience absolutely adore the moment. xx

________________________________________________________________
Monday, March 26th, 1984.
After spending a Saturday in detention and enjoying it way more than you expected, it was time to return to reality. You got off the bus with one thing and one thing only in your mind.
Andrew Clark kissed you on Saturday.
You didn’t know how was the situation between the two of you. You’d grown fond of each other after spending all day together in detention, and even though you would never admit it out loud, you had always had a little crush on him.
You entered the school and walked straight to your locker. You had no time to think about your feelings, with your focus on the Chemistry class you feared you’d fail. You noticed someone standing by your side as you left the stuff you didn’t need and picked up what was necessary for Chemistry class.
“Hey, Brian. What’s up?”
The blond smiled shyly. On Saturday, he said that he considered you his friends and that he would say hi to you in the corridor if he saw you. You thought that was truly sweet, and it just showed how much of a good person Brian was.
“Hey. Just wanted to say good morning. How was your Sunday?”
“It wasn’t bad. I attended a family brunch. What about you?”
“I didn’t do anything interesting. Studied a lot.”
“Good.”, the bell rang. “Hey, I gotta go. I cannot be late for Chemistry again. Mrs Wilson will kill me. Catch you later?”
“Sure. Bye!”, you waved as you fled through the corridor. Luckily, you arrived just in time, a minute or two before Mrs Wilson entered the room. She started explaining something about the Periodic Table of Elements that you couldn’t understand no matter how hard you tried.
“Psst, y/n.”, someone whispered behind you. “Y/n.”
“Sssh, I’m trying to understand this.”, you whispered back.
You started feeling little taps on your shoulder, which were kind of annoying. You turned around. “What?”
Behind you, Andrew smiled broader than ever. You blushed a little before turning back around. You really needed to pay attention to class, and you had been enough times in detention for speaking too much in class.
One hour later, when the class finished, you took your things and went back to your locker. Then, you went up the stairs for your next class.
“Y/n, hey!”, you heard Andrew somewhere in the corridor. “Wait up!”
You froze in the middle of the stairs, not knowing how to react. You haven’t spoken to him ever since he kissed you last Saturday and you weren’t sure about his feelings towards you.
You saw him climbing up the stairs to meet you, and you couldn’t help to smile a little bit.
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
“You really ignored me in Chemistry class.”, he laughed.
“Yeah, sorry about that. Chemistry is hell for me, I really need to pass the subject.”, you said, smiling. “So, what did you want?”
“Oh, yeah.”, he opened his notebook and ripped out a tiny piece of paper. “Write your phone number there.”
“What for?”
“That way I can call you tonight.”, you noticed how Andy’s cheeks turned softly pink. “I mean, if you are okay with it.”
"Yeah, of course.", you scribbled your house phone number and gave the paper back to him.
Andrew smiled proudly as he pocketed it. Then, he looked back at you. "So, can I call you tonight?"
"Sure. 7 o'clock?"
"Perfect.", he smiled one last time and kissed you on the cheek, only to run down the stairs again. "Look for me at lunch! I want to eat with you!"
You stayed in the stairs, watching him go back to the corridor and smiled to yourself like an idiot.
"So you two are going serious? Damn, I never thought you would end up with a sportsman."
You looked up only to see Bender smirking at you. You gave him the finger jokingly as he laughed.
"Fuck you, Bender.", you said, going past him.
"Oh, you kiss your mother with that mouth?"
You laughed soundly as you went to your classroom, hoping it would pass quickly so you could see Andrew again.

Valentine's Day
Decided to do this as a Valentine's Day special, hope you like it
An interesting fact that I discovered is that people who are called Valentina/Valentino/Valentim this day is like an Onomastic birthday (Birthday of someone who is named after the Saint of that day) So happy birthday Valentina/Valentino/Valentim!!!
Summary: How they react to receiving gifts from their s/o on Valentine's Day
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Confused
They stand there with their eyebrows widened as they stare at the gift in their hands.
It is not a surprise for them to receive gifts at this time or even hundreds of their admirers
Sometimes it was a hassle to have so many chocolates or gifts
But receiving one of your own? It was something they hadn't imagined, but they liked the idea.
Suddenly he caresses your head and sends you a genuine smile
"Thank you" They say with that sparkle in their eyes that only you and one of the few to witness
They wouldn't mind getting a Valentine's Day gift if it was yours
Tom Knowles, Rayne Ames, Lance Crown, Wirth Mádl, Ryoh Grantz, Carpaccio Luo-Yang, Shuen Getsuku, Lance Crown
Stunned
They just stand there with wide eyes when they see you handing them a gift on Valentine's Day
Surprised and little they are stunned
They never got a Valentine's gift from anyone...unless someone stole them
But receiving a gift from you? They're a blushing mess
Without them realizing it, their face is redder than tomatoes, peppers or any other fruit/vegetable that is red.
"Everything is fine?!?" You say worried about them
"Y-yes!!! Everything is great" They manage to say trying to hide the excitement of getting something for Valentine's Day especially from their s/o
Your cuteness will someday be the death of them
Dot Barrett, Abyss Razor, Cello Morceau, Tron Morceau, Milo Genius, Cell War
Joyful
As soon as they realize that you are witnessing it on Valentine's Day, their surroundings light up
It doesn't matter if they've had a bad day or their expression is dull or they just don't show it, the air around them lights up and even seems to have flowers.
"Really for me!" They say doubtful
"Yes! Besides, today is the day to give a gift to your loved one" You say as you bring the gift to them
Suddenly they reach into your pocket and take out a gift and give it to you
"I thought the same thing" They say laughing a little at the coincidence
You can't help but laugh at the coincidence as they exchange gifts
It seems like you read each other's minds
Finn Ames, Lemon Irvine, Love Cute, Renatus Revol, Kaldo Gehenna, Lovie Rosequartz, Delisaster, Malcolm Curtis, Galuf Gargaron, Margarette Macaron, Max Land, Adam Jobs
Without expression
They just stand there while staring at their present, yet it was so silent you could hear a pin drop.
They don't say anything it seems like they didn't like it at all
"If you don't like-" You try to say but suddenly they go through something in your pocket and take out a gift
"...Looks like we had the same idea" They say trying to hide the amusement in their tone as they hand it to you
"Ah! And indeed heh~" You laugh as they exchange gifts
Fate likes to play tricks on you both
Abel Walker, Tsurara Halestone, Agito Tyrone, Orter Mádl, Sophina Biblia, Domina Blowelive, Charles Contini, Lévis Rosequartz, Kenny Clark, Innocent Zero(teenager), Doom, Famin, Epidem, Malta Barrett, Mash Burnedead, Meliadoul Amy(teenager), Wahlberg Baigan(teenager), Olore Andrew, Anser Shinri

music hcs for my favs
a/n: ok for the outsiders boys i know greaser music is extremely important in the subculture, i am one myself! but remember you can listen to multiple types of music, as long as some of it still matches the subculture. this is obviously outside of the subculture's music rn
TWO-BIT MATHEWS - oh my gosh he listens to Yung Gravy and Lil Tracy. tell me he doesnt you cannot. also probably throws in some Wham! and Kenny Loggins. imagining him dancing to footloose makes me happy. probably taught his sister how to rap LMAOO
STEVE RANDLE - oh he def listens to 311, Beastie Boys and Limp Bizkit. thinks hes so cool (he is). his fav song is down by 311. listens to Carly Rae Jepsen's call me maybe in private. will occasionally jam out to Madonna as well.
DARRY CURTIS - ahh!!!! darry listens to Boston, Journey and Twisted Sister. classic 80s rock bands. also loves Bob Serger!! mainly listens to rock and soft rock, but i could also see him liking a little bit of r&b, like Whitney Houston or Marvin Gaye.
ANDREW CLARK - my man, my man. can and will go from La Dispute to The Chainsmokers in the same playlist. He listens to both rock and nostalgic 2014 style pop and rap. From Rae Sremmurd and 21 Savage to Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding to Joan Jett and Warrant.
JOHN BENDER - Bowling for Soup, 311, The Clash and Insane Clown Posse were all in his spotify wrapped. He loves punk and rap. His favourite song is I Fought The Law by The Clash, the title seems so stereotypical but i just think that specific genre and sound fits his vibe
ALLISON REYNOLDS - listens to hippie music and goth rock. her favourite bands are Siouxsie and the Banshees, The Beatles, London After Midnight and The Rolling Stones. She also will occasionally listen to like 2020 tiktok songs idk the genre but like McCafferty, Mother Mother and EllyOtto.

It was extremely obvious and a very well known fact that you had a slight thing for both of the boys; you were very outward about your attraction towards them, not in any way shape or form trying to hide your affection. You flirted with the two of them almost all the time: you winked, smiled, and you would often place your hands upon them while having a conversation, wether that be on their arms, chest, or fingers, your palms always seemed to be placed on them. Your confidence and straight forward attitude is what caused them to fall head over heels for you. Andy often day dreamed about bringing you along with him to his tournament’s, accompanying you to the mall, and inviting you to hang out with his friends, while John imagined you as his plus one to house parties, brining you to tons of metal concerts, and getting high with you in the school parking lot. You were on their minds almost 24/7, the blond often thought of you during his wrestling practices, causing him to space out and get yelled at by his coach as a result, and John was finding it hard to keep up with his whole bad boy facade when even the thought of you slightly lingered through his brain, a small smile slipping across his lips before his face turned a light shade of pink.
If you thought they argued a lot before, well boy were you wrong. Constantly observing as the person they were both deeply infatuated with flirting with another guy always made them furious. It caused many fights, be it physical, verbal, or both, they were always extremely heated and violent. Fist fights often erupted between the two of them, maybe John looked at Andy the wrong way in the hall or Andrew flipped off John during lunch, whatever it may have been, they quickly came to the realization that the whole situation had transformed into a complete competition for your love, a battle that sparked an even deeper hatred between the two. Their shared loathing for one another and their constant fights and brawls made the thought of each other start to appear into their brains much more often. Andy was always thinking about Bender on his way to school, gripping his backpack with extreme force as he stared out the window, glaring at almost everything in sight as he thought about the brown haired male and how much he despised him, and John wasn't much better: he started to explode at teachers more often due to his pent up anger, yelling at adults while he kicked over furniture as he exited the classroom. They had begun to think about one another almost constantly, their lives practically revolving around each other, always thinking about which hall to take or where to sit at during lunch so they would just happen to cross paths.
So, with you as their final goal, but each other almost always on their minds, they started to fight more and more. Why, you may ask, well there is two possibilities, one: They were trying to cover up the fact that they were both a bit into each other by over exaggerating their feelings of hatred, or two: They secretly just wanted a reason to spend more time and to be closer to one another. But what ever it was, these two started to fight over the smallest and things. For example, Andrew had accidentally bumped into Benders locker in the hall one morning, his shoulder slightly nudging it as he walked passed, and John, who witnessed this, from down the hall, practically jumped on top of the athlete. Or, another time, John was actually nice to the blonde, Andrew had dropped his pencil in class and Bender leaned over, retrieving it for him before handing it to the other boy, attempting to be nice and actually form some kind of impartial bond. But John jumped about fifty feet when Andrew just lost it, yelling and screaming at John in the middle of class. In that moment, John vowed, on his own life, that that would be the last time he would ever spare the blonde from his anger. It ended up being a lie, but what ever.
You started to suspect that they not only reciprocated your feelings but also felt something for one another as well when caught one of them staring and admiring the other in the middle of class, multiple times. The look in their eyes definitely was not that of someone who truly disliked someone, their faces were actually the same exact ones you often caught them starring at you with; a smitten and total love struck look written across their features. Johns eyes were soft as he gazed upon Andrew, a small smile creeping upon his face as he observed the way the light casted down upon the boy, while Andrew often zoned out with his eyes glued to Bender, fiddling with the string of his sweatshirt as his vision practically magnetized in John’s direction. This fact didn't cause you to be overwhelmed with a feeling of jealousy or annoyance, you were actually quite thrilled about the occurrence as it worked out amazingly in your favor.
This went on for a while, you flirting with the boys as they fought one another and bickered over you, you would observe them as they glanced at you before glancing at one another, but the day eventually arrived when you finally snapped. The moment you decided to situate the entire messy and confusing affair came when they fought over you in the lunch room, as they always did. John waltzed over to Andrew before preceding to kick a leg out from underneath his chair, the blond toppling over as a result before jumping up from his position on the ground and grabbing Bender by his hair. You were quick to rise from your seat, calmly walking over towards them before separating the intense fight. Once they had finally conciliated they ordered you to pick between them, to decide right then and there who you wanted to be with and demanding you to stop teasing them. But, instead, you simply suggested that you all date. They were apprehensive at first, awkwardly looking up at one another, then back at you before John finally agreed. Andy let out a soothing exhale as relief washed over him, hiding his joy at the thought that both of his love interests had feelings for him. He soon accorded as well.
It took a bit of time for the two of them to become comfortable, slowly relaxing around each other as their hatred for one another slowly diminished over time. At first, they were both extremely awkward whilst together, too nervous to even look at each other and often still fighting and bickering, as they had never dealt with each other in a civil manner. But soon enough, they quickly became pleasant with one another.
The three of you love wearing one anothers clothing items; Andy often wore Johns jacket, walking around town or making his way through the halls while supporting John’s jean jacket isn't an uncommon sight. And some how, he makes it look amazing as well. You often wear Andy’s letterman, as he has practically no use for it anymore. Not only is it extremely comfortable and smells amazing, but it also looks super cute with all of your outfits. His over sized jacket is like the cherry on top of all of your clothes, matching perfectly with a cute pair of shorts or finalizing your white t-shirt. And, although Bender is a bit too large to fit into either of your clothes, he loves wearing your jewelry, often stylizing his outfits with your small, diamond earrings or a metal necklace wrapped around his neck and hanging upon his collar.
These two love sneaking in through your window during the night. Wether it be for some long over due make out sessions or just the deep desire to hang out and cuddle, one of them always appears outside your room in the evenings, desperately knocking at your window to let them in. And they always seem to run into each other unannounced as well. Andrew may accidentally bump into John on the street or they may cross paths whilst noisily scaling the side of your house, either way, they never seem to plan it when they show up at your home around the same time, it’s just a really odd coincidence.
The three of you often have study dates. All of you get together while dressed in comfortable pajamas, John often wearing a pair of Andrew’s pajama pants while you are practically swimming in one of John’s t-shirts, before you sit down upon the floor, spreading all of your textbooks and homework out on the ground as you work with one another. But, with in ten minutes, you're always the one who ends up tutoring the two of them, teaching them basic math skills or simple grammar as Andrew often doesn't have time for school work, due to both his busy and stressful sports schedule, and Bender just simple doesn't do any of his work on his own time.
Both John and yourself show up to Andy’s wrestling meets, taking a seat somewhere in the crowded bleachers before cheering him on during his matches. He loves waving or winking at the two of you before going out onto the mat, loving the idea that you guys will be observing him as you happily support him. John always seems shows up a bit late with food though, rushing into the gymnasium with snacks and meals for the three of you before frantically searching for you among the audience. He always brings himself a coke and some cold popcorn, he supplies you with your favorite candy and some sort of chips, and, all though Andrew hates it, he always brings him some sort of really sugary junk food, just to piss him off.
The three of you absolutely adore going swimming in the summer; you have so much fun dressing in your favorite swim wear and quickly packing a day bag before dashing off to the beach, practically on a whim. The boys love swimming and splashing around in the water, sharing sunglasses as they swim as far off into the lake as they possibly can, all while you observe them from shore. Most of the time, you're sitting upon the beach, usually reading or sunbathing, but every so often, you join them in their water sports, and when ever you do so, finally giving into their begs and pleads, they conspire against you before dunking you underwater. Either one of them will scoop you up into their arms before basically slamming you down into the water. They think it is the funniest thing on the planet.
The group of you don’t often cook together, but when ever you do, it always ends in some sort of food fight. You could be baking cookies, bam, theres dough smeared all over your faces. Cooking noodles, suddenly pasta sauce some how ends up smooshed all over the walls. It’s like full of violent warfare; Andrew will be hiding behind the kitchen counter as John throughs flour across the room, giving you the perfect opportunity to crack an egg upon Andy’s head before Bender catches you and wipes chocolate all over you and your clothes.
Those boys love having their hair played with. They don’t care if you braid it, comb it, or simply run your fingers through it, it’s like their in complete heaven when ever your hands are on their heads. You often find yourself with your palm buried in Johns hair as he listens to music, or your fingers laced in Andrew’s locks while he’s on the phone with one of his buddies. They practically beg you to massage their heads when ever the three of you are watching television or simply laying with one another.
Ice skating. In the colder seasons, the three of you get together, at least once a month, and go ice skating. John absolutely sucks at it. You and your blond boyfriend watch as your big and tough boyfriend falls on his ass or face plants into the ice about a dozen times. He usually has to desperately hang onto one of you for the entirety of the night, usually grasping Andy’s hand as he’s surprisingly talented at the sport. He rarely slips, usually keeping amazing balance as John and you struggle to glide successfully for two whole seconds. The athlete can even do a few tricks. “Fuck you, you show off.” John will jokingly snap at Andrew when ever he lands some random trick.
You all often go to fairs together; John and you love going on all the rides, your favorite being the zipper, putting all of your effort in attempting to make it spin all the way around, swinging you and John around in your seats causing your hair to fly around the cage. Andrew isn't a huge fan of rides, he’ll accompany the two of you on the ferris wheel or maybe the tilt-a-whirl, but thats about it. He hates feeling his stomach drop or when his anxiety gets so bad he’s shaking, but worst of all, he hates getting sick, despising all rides that may include spinning him in circles too fast or hang him upside down for a long period of time. And because of this fact, he often stands around, chatting with a few of his acquaintances while he waits, even offering to win prizes for you and John. He always secures a large stuffed animal for you and gains some sort of band poster for Bender.
One time, the three of you got together at Andrew’s house and had a movie night, arguing over what movie you should view while you cooked popcorn, gathered some candies, and poured three cups of soda. You finally accepted the fact that you’d be watching Die Hard against your will. But, within twenty minutes of the movie that they had so desperately wanted to view, the two had absolutely passed out; Andy, exhausted from wrestling practice, had his head placed upon your lap, quietly snoring to himself as his hand grasped at your knee. Bender had his cheek squished against your shoulder, causing his mouth to fall open as his hair hung in his face. You had to pee extremely bad, but you excepted the fact that you weren't rising anytime soon as you didn't want to wake the boys, so you allowed your fate to slowly creep up on you as your hands found their way to their hair, twirling their locks between the pads of your fingers as you watched the action film.
Finally, these two would definitely fight someone due to you, in fact, they already have. The two of them had walked into gym class one day, their eyes quickly scanning the room for your figure before their vision landed upon some kid shamelessly flirting with you. They could read the look of absolute helplessness drawn all over your face, your eyes frantic as a small frown grew across your lips. This random dude obviously was unaware of the fact that you were dating two of the toughest guys in school, because if he had known, he wouldn't have made such an obvious mistake. Anyway, the look on the boys face was priceless when your boyfriends practically spawn out of nowhere before beating his disturbing ass.

Dust, Volume 10, Number 12
Tumblr media
Olivia Tremor Control
Another year of Dust goes into the books with this final edition. We’ve relished the chance to work in short form, covering small label releases and chart-toppers, new music and worthy reissues, across a lot of genres but leaning heavily on jazz, folk, punk and experimental music. We hope you’ve enjoyed it, too, Here’s to continuing that, at least, in 2025.
This month’s contributors include: Bill Meyer, Patrick Masterson, Tim Clarke, Ian Mathers, Alex Johnson, Jennifer Kelly, Jonathan Shaw, Christian Carey and Bryon Hayes.
Abdou / Gouband / Warelis — Hammer, Roll and Leaf (Relative Pitch)
youtube
When applied to improvising musicians, residency usually refers to a sequence of gigs at the same club. This session, a first-time encounter for the trio but not for its component parts, takes another tack. The hour of music on Hammer, Roll and Leaf was tracked in alto and tenor saxophonist Sakina Abdou’s home over the course of four days, two of which were taken up with gigs elsewhere. So, we should we call it a residential residency? At any rate, one supposes that the shared time in close quarters contributed to the music’s charge. It has a feeling of excitement in becoming. They’re not just improvising; they’re figuring out who they are as a trio. Each musician brings both flexibility and a strong individual presence. Martha Warelis is as comfortable inside the piano as she is at the keys, and she uses that combination of hardware rumble and high-wire line-tracing to give the music shape, motion and space. Toma Gouband’s penchant for playing with stones and branches filters the conventional spectrum-filling function of his drum kit, and his astute placement of small sounds invites one to listen for the details. Abdou thrives in their company, find a complementary stance for whatever her fellows throw at her. Great stuff.
Bill Meyer
Barker / Parker / Irabagon — Bakunawa (Out of Our Heads)
Andrew Barker is a drummer, improviser and composer based in New York whose cv includes Gold Sparkle Band, Acid Birds and a host of endeavors that blur the line between solo and collaborative. Take this one, for example. Barker put the date together, but when you call on William Parker (heard here on bass, B flat pocket tuba, and a Catalan double reed instrument called a gralla) and Jon Irabagon (tenor and sopranino saxophone), you don’t do so in order to shove music stands under their noses. Each musician adds such personality and imagination to their parts that the shared compositional credits make perfect sense. Each of the LP’s four (five on the download) tracks explores a different tributary off the free jazz stream, pushing back the mapped zone of exploration just a bit.“Fly Anew,” for example, swings with burly muscularity, while “Morgan Avenue Second Line” fractures and scrambles said line into an expression of confrontationally dancing sound, like martial arts sparring match between three choreographers.

Batu & Nick León — Yiu EP (A Long Strange Dream)
youtube
Bristol’s Batu and Miami’s Nick León are both club vets at this point — the former via numerous late UK bass singles and ownership of both the Timedance and A Long Strange Dream imprints, the latter an adventurous remix workhorse whose 2024 highlight ended up being an Erika de Casier collaboration. Closing out the year with their first EP together, Yiu thrives on the tension between Bristolian bass weight and the lighter, faster beats of Miami’s Latin scene. The eponymous track, originally heard in León’s Dekmantel mix, is the highlight, snagging a reggaeton rhythm and marrying it to swirling, dissonant (but not unpleasant) synths. Don’t miss the bubbly “Tuvan (yes, there is throat singing incorporated) or the dashing “Palo,” either, though. For just four tracks, a great deal of ground is covered; let’s hope this just scratches the surface of their potential together.
Patrick Masterson
“Deadly” Headley Bennett—35 Years from Alpha (On-U Sound)
youtube
If you listen to Studio One reggae, you know Headley Bennett’s playing, even if you don’t know that you know. As part of the core session crew, his spreadably rich alto saxophone is all over the label’s discography, but as a consummate sideman he managed to make it to the age of 50 without making a solo record. When he stuck around London after a tour with Prince Far I, Adrian Sherwood recognized an opportunity to right a cosmic wrong and put him in the studio with drummer Style Scott, singer Bim Sherman and a posse of creatively named On-U Sound regulars. The combination of Bennett’s fluid melodies and Sherwood’s muscularly dubby, percussion-forward production is inspired. Every boingy syndrum, ardently crooned lyric and echoing beat has a reflective surface that points attention to the saxophonist.

Blawan — BouQ EP (Temesc)
The longer South Yorkshire producer Jamie Roberts is left to his own devices, the weirder his songs get. Using his literal voice more than ever and letting in a lot more light than his typically aggro, industrial-leaning productions account for, BouQ covers considerable post-dubstep ground for him on the big room highlight “Fires” alone. Lest it be misunderstood, Blawan isn’t going James Blake singer-songwriter mode or getting confessional instead of confrontational, but the more discernibly human touches and melodies of this four-tracker are a distinctive step to the left. It suits him; more than another Persher album or even an extended hardware-only Karenn set, BouQ is the sound of an opportunity, of fresh potential from a guy who’s lived through club trends of the last decade and a half and still has something left to give.
Patrick Masterson
Bursting — Bursting EP (No Sabes)
Bursting cites Jawbox, No Knife, Drive like Jehu and Shiner as musical reference points for its debut six-song EP, but even with that and pedigrees of bands including Coliseum, Stress Positions and Thou, the thing “Trade in Time” reminded me of most immediately was early Foo Fighters. There’s a subtle multitracked quality to Kortland Chase’s higher register that recalls Dave Grohl in his first years after Nirvana and the music never feels too heavy — but far from a negative thing, this just paints Bursting as distinct from its creators’ biggest projects. There’s no question you can hear Jehu’s most driving Yank crimes on “Play It Nice,” but taken as a whole, this is a solid slab of 1990s-indebted indie-rock skirting the perimeter of knotty post-hardcore as it was then delivered. Put another way: It’s easy to imagine a 1995 where “Dark Phase Manager” is an alt-rock radio staple (complementary).
Patrick Masterson
DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ — Sorcery (Spells on the Telly)
youtube
It’s unnerving how prolific DJ Sabrina the Teenage DJ is. The still-anonymous London producer properly broke through with the three-hour odyssey Destiny, a mind-bending 41-track melange of sunny, psychedelic, sample-heavy house the likes of which most people hadn’t heard since the Avalanches’ Since I Left You heyday. That was August 2023. Normally, you’d take a moment after that to make a victory lap, catch your breath and see where you’re at artistically, assess what you want to do next. But that’s you, a mortal; what Sabrina did instead was release two singles and three albums, one of which (Hex) has two companion albums unto itself. The latest (though only a fool would bet on it being the last) 2024 release is the 14-track Sorcery from early December, which fails to dip in the quality we’ve come to expect. Despite oft-straightforward 4/4 rhythms, the sheer density of these productions — which have to look like a nightmare in ProTools, incidentally — boggles the mind. What does her process look like? When does she sleep? How the fuck is this possible? The answer has to be right there in the title; nothing else seems plausible.

The Green Child — Look Familiar (Hobbies Galore / Upset the Rhythm)
The self-titled 2018 debut by the duo of Mikey Young (Eddie Current Suppression Ring, Total Control) and Raven Mahon (Grass Widow) was an uncanny gem. Its deadpan space-pop felt like the soundtrack to an odd, dated nature documentary. On album three, Look Familiar, the duo are joined by Alex Macfarlane (The Stevens, Twerps) on guitars and synths, and Shaun Gionis (Boomgates) on drums. The resulting sound is much fuller and more propulsive, with a motorik bent and a twist of glam swagger. The title feels like a nod to the fact that several of the songs have elements that are reminders of a diverse range of other songs, such as Fleetwood Mac’s “Tusk” (“Easy Window”), Boards of Canada’s “A Beautiful Place Out In the Country” (“A Long Beautiful Flowing Cape”), and even Wang Chung’s “Dance Hall Days” (opener “Wow Factor”). The eclecticism in these reference points is a good indicator of this album’s tunefulness and likeability.
Tim Clarke
Haptic — Sensitive Dependence on Initial Conditions (Line)
One could accurately characterize the entire timeline of the Chicago-identified trio Haptic as a shift between the poles of outreach and interiority. Originally formed expressly to perform live, with guests, extended episodes of geographic separation brought out their latent tendencies towards audience-free interaction. The title tips the hand of this recording, which can be considered an experiential confrontation with destiny. For while the musicians added to, subtracted from, processed and otherwise manipulated sourced from a one-day session at Chicago’s Experimental Sound Studio, they kept coming back to the original sounds. Which is not to say that it sounds like what they played; rather, what you hear was fileted from the original sound capture, dredged through field recordings and room sounds, and then shaken until only a light dusting of influence remained. There are long stretches where it sounds like a rank of long electronic tones tucked behind a cloud bank of room sound, and this immateriality makes the choice to release it only as a digital download feel like an artistic choice to make format congruent with content.

Hirsch Swell Clouse Parker — Out on a Limb (Soul City Sounds)
To spell it out, that’s Steve Hirsch on drums, Steve Swell on trombone, William Parker on bass and Jim Clouse on soprano and tenor saxophones. All of them save Minneapolitan Hirsch are New Yorkers who spend a lot of time in Clouse’s Park West Studio, and there’s a rapport between them that contributes to this music’s apparent effortlessness. The horns glide and tangle, then stop and smear textures as one; the bass and drums have a leap-frogging dynamic that keeps the music moving even when one of them temporarily plunges into space and then pops back up, gleefully gravity-defiant. Soulful and free-flying, his is free jazz that inhabits the moment and makes you want to live in it too.

Hypnodrone Ensemble — The Problem Is in the Sender—Do Not Tamper With the Receiver (WV Sorcerer Productions)
youtube
About all you can count on with a release from this group led by Aidan Baker (Nadja) and Eric Quach (thisquietarmy) is that those two will play guitar, there will be at least three drummers (here Fiona McKenzie, Angela Martinez Muñoz, and Sara Neidorf), and that things are indeed going to drone hypnotically. On this outing, in addition to past contributor Gareth Sweeney returning on bass, there’s a first: vocals, by Lane Shi Otayonii (Dent, Elizabeth Colour Wheel). Otayonii’s wailing vocals are equally entranced and entrancing and fit surprisingly well with the roiling boil the rest of the Ensemble can whip up seemingly on command. The result is just as easy to get lost in as their other LPs, but in a whole new head spinning way.
Ian Mathers
Licklash — Big Smile (Roolette)
youtube
Here’s hoping you have at least 12 minutes for punk rock today. Listen just one time through Big Smile, the debut EP from Melbourne duo Licklash, and you’ll have gotten a satisfying pummel from these four furious, bouncy polemics. The pleasures of the blurted but flowing last verse of “Party Line” or the pounding, angular rhythm guitar on “Battleship,” for example, are immediate. But leave Big Smile on for another round and you’ll find a carefully constructed, complex record that, despite its four-year formation, never sounds over-thought or precious.
Big Smile was entirely and admirably produced by the band    — guitarist and vocalist Kahlia Parker and bassist Carsten Bruhn. The mix is clean and balanced and spotlights the subtleties: the crinkled buzz of Parker’s lead riff on “Battleship” or the high, bent notes that orchestrate the music into intervals of calm, of form meeting content, however briefly, on “Control.” Achievements in production noted and appreciated, you’ll keep coming back to Big Smile for the polemics and the pummeling; for Parker’s sharp, indignant delivery of the group’s frantic, funny-until-dead-serious lyrics and headlong, hard struck instrumentation that manages both hardcore intensity and a bumping groove.
Alex Johnson
Low Animal — Bedlam Hiss EP (Decapitator)
I’m not saying it’s Low Animal’s fault my tinnitus is beyond repair — you’re talking to a guy who saw My Bloody Valentine without earplugs in his younger, dumber years — but I’m also not saying they helped at a recent gig in support of Flint grunge staples Greet Death. The flamboyant Chicago quintet knows where their bread is buttered, and on recent three-tracker Bedlam Hiss, they put that noise-rock know-how to tape with a screeching, smashing, soaringly irrepressible pummel. There are a not-unnoticeable number of bands, led by Chat Pile, currently out there demonstrating what they’ve learned from The Jesus Lizard … but I can assure you that few of them match the sonic intensity of Low Animal. The EP doesn’t quite do the live experience justice, so take it from one who learned that too late: Do not leave those earplugs at home.

Lunar Noon — A Circle’s Round (self-released)
youtube
Michelle Zheng was reading works by the Vietnamese Buddhist and peace activist Thich Nhat Hanh when she started composing A Circle’s Round, and his thinkings on action, inter-being and connection to all living things permeates the expansive contours of this art-song cycle. The sounds of nature weave through sophisticated, large ensemble arrangements. Indeed, the very first sound you hear is running water. Yet this is no meditation-inducing drone. Zheng constructs shimmering, multi-layered compositions out of choral vocals, strings, piano and other instruments, and enlivens them with constant interlocking motion. Her core band includes half a chamber quartet in violinist Brian Lach and Christopher Healy, plus drummer Théo Auclair, and she herself sings and plays piano and synths.  Some cuts like “Forgettable Consequences” swagger with jazzy urbanity. Others, such as the closer, “The Other Shore,” billow with lively voices at play. “A Circle’s Round” percolates and shivers, approaching Jon Hopkins electronic ambiences. Lovely and complicated.

Mahall / Stoffner / Griener — Die Exorzistin (Wide Ear)
Give this record’s sleeve a good look. The artists have gone to the trouble of packaging the CD in a 7” single sleeve, thereby guaranteeing two things; it won’t get lost in the same stack as the other slimline CD sleeves, and fading jazz-head eyesight stands a better chance of registering the details of the dense, irreverent collage on its sleeve. Neither the image nor the music it encases seeks to provide comfort. Drummer Michael Griener and clarinetist Rudi Mahall have a partnership that has endured since they were both teens, and they are as jointly fluent in mid-20th century swing as they are in elbows-out free improvisation. They zero in on the latter end of the spectrum through this album’s 17 spiky and generally pithy tracks. Mercurial and agile, they make music like a pair of swordsmen who are just itching for a chance to evade the rules and poke holes in each other’s favorite smoking jackets. Electric guitarist Florian Stoffner is equally nimble, but he brings a clanking sonic ballast to the proceedings.

Anne Malin — Strange Power! (Dear Life)
North Carolina poet and songwriter Anne Malin brings an extended ensemble to her fifth full-length, moving away from the ghostly tremors of 2020’s Waiting Song (“These songs have a fey, otherworldly quality,” said Dusted.) towards a surer, more communal sound. There’s nothing spectral about “North Carolina,” for instance. The tune pays tribute to the white sand beaches of Malin’s home state, trace-like percussion, pedal steel and piano flourishing around her warm, twining melodies, while “River” undulates with the warmth of Lily Honigberg’s violin. Still, “Lilac Bloom” is as delicate as the blossoms it celebrates, and wavery washes of surf guitar arise around its slow lament. And edging back into goth, “The Visionary” quotes a poem by Emily Brontë, Malin’s voice echoing the novelist’s 19th century, death-haunted romanticism. Strange Power! builds a narrow bridge between this world and the next.

Nate Mercereau — Sundays (How So)
youtube
Nate Mercereau is a guitarist, sampler and composer who has worked with a long list of high profile musicians, from pop icons like Lizzo, Shawn Mendez and Andre3000, to jazz innovators like Idris Ackamoore and Kamasi Washington. For Sundays, Mercereau pairs with avant percussionist/synthesizer whiz Carlos Niño for a set of radiant, synth-heavy dreamscapes that however somewhere between prog and fusion jazz. Mercereau infuses his music with light and air and nature. When birds twitter in the interstices of “Every Moment Is the First and Last,” and you can almost feel the sunshine pouring in. “Absolute Sensitivity” sits cross-legged in a meditation garden, letting the long tones vibrate, mutate and fade without forcing them into melody. On the downside, these cuts can feel disembodied and imaginary, an unreal landscape too pretty to buy into. However, bits of organic music—alto flights from saxophonist Josh Johnson, kit drums from Jamire Williams—provide some grounding.
Jennifer Kelly
Non Bruises — II (Just Because)
Ohioan Mike Uva returns to his electrified Non Bruises project for a second round, cutting back on the lyrics-focused song structure and zooming in on guitar tone. Thus, “Silent Partner” cuts back to the words to a recorded (and uncredited) inspirational speech, building a slow bloom of post-rock guitar and drums around it. “Moto Rick” is a sharper vamp, all driving guitar/bass/drums for a long time before picking up some thready vocals. Standout “Evelyn Martin,” credited to guitarist Andy Stibora, has a bit more of the first record’s lo-fi GBV-into-Pavement grace, but most of these cuts groove rather than hook. “Taster,” a Grandaddy cover near the end, looms and hazes and resolves, a reminder that the fuzz has to have a center somewhere. We liked the first Non Bruises a lot here at Dusted (“an album that could take its place in your small rack of favorites”) and this one a bit less.

The Olivia Tremor Control — “Garden of Light” / “The Same Place” (Elephant 6 Recording Co.)
youtube
Two new songs by legendary psych-pop band The Olivia Tremor Control were recently released as part of the soundtrack to the Elephant 6 Recording Co. documentary. Then, a matter of hours later, news circulated that Will Cullen Hart had died of a heart attack following a decades-long struggle with multiple sclerosis. The experience of listening to these two songs is not only colored by the news of Hart’s passing, and that of Bill Doss before him, but also the sinking realization that the long-gestating third OTC LP may never see the light of day without Hart or Doss at the helm. Having said that, the strength of the E6 musical community, so beautifully depicted in the documentary, may work miracles once the sting of Hart’s passing has begun to fade. For now, these two songs are premium, essential OTC. “Garden of Light” is classic Doss, full of bright, major-key jangle, harmonized vocals, and Beatles-esque guitar breaks, while Hart’s “The Same Place” could have come straight off the first Circulatory System LP with its mournful cellos and dreamy sway.
Tim Clarke
Ploughshare — Second Wound (I, Voidhanger)
youtube
Angular and dissonant, Canberra-based black metal band Ploughshare makes music that seems like it would be more at home in Norway or Northern France. But black metal is global, and always has been; the Scandi bands get the most buzz for breaking the form open, but Brazil and England were likely more important sites of early articulations of the genre’s visual style and unslakable need for infernal speed. Ploughshare plays a much headier, avant-garde rendition of black metal (as the band’s current label suggests), and it’s demanding stuff. This reviewer really digs “Thorns Pressed into His Head,” which achieves a propulsion that is both dementedly downhill in its abandon and deeply dizzying; there’s a churn in your gut if you really dig in and engage. On some of the longer compositions, the desire for atmospherics and rhythmic complexity can drain the music of some of its bloody-minded heat; see “The Mockery of the Demons.” Wish this talented band would devote a little more of their intensity to keeping the music grounded, where its capacity to gouge and pummel has maximum material force. But Second Wound is a mostly satisfying record. If it cuts into you once, you’ll go back.

Primitive Art Group — 1981-1986 (Amish)
1981-1986 by Primitive Art Group
These New Zealand improvisers used jazz instruments in their work, with some unorthodox inclusions like bass banjo, bass drum, and guitar preparations. Their two albums are collected here. Multiple reeds in tandem create howling dissonance on “Swingin’ in the Rain.” On the live track “Cecil Likes to Dance,” the group channels raucous free jazz from the United States circa 1970, with a central section that thins out to harmonics, drum rolls, and altissimo call and response, and a return to the opening demeanor. “Lannie’s Revenge” has more organized horn charts that are periodically interrupted by spacy organ and angular drumming. Solos from saxophone and organ provide an Arkestra ambience. “Macho Groove” is rife with syncopation and juxtaposes multiple saxophones playing sustained lines and emphatic short motives. 1981-1986 is an eclectic pastiche of free play that embodies the energy of New Zealand’s fertile creative music scene in the 1980s.

Maeve Schallert — The Etching (cow: music/Astral Spirits)
The Etching by Maeve Schallert
Scratched into a solid but capable of suggesting all manner of active perceptions, etchings have a lot in common with LPs. The Etching may be cut into plastic (or, if you fail to find one of its 100-small micro-pressing, coded into your favorite file format), but it certainly evokes movement. It is performed by Maeve Schallert, a violinist based in Kingston NY who is too young to have known a world without delays and canny enough to spin elusive gold from the collision of architecturally and electronically generated echoes. They created each of the album’s two pieces by feeding phrases into a ten-second delay MaxMSP whilst playing in a stairwell, which generates the impression of violin strokes circling the space like a vortex of bats, then flying up and out towards every possible horizon.

Pat Thomas / Dominic Lash /Tony Orell — Bleyschool: Where? (577 Records)
BleySchool: Where by Pat Thomas and Bleyschool
Bleyschool is another in Pat Thomas’ bulging bag of musical tricks. Like Ahmed, which had a banner year in 2024, it deals with history on the English keyboardist’s terms. Accompanied by bassist Dominic Lash and drummer Tony Orell, Thomas sticks to piano and deals mainly with material associated with (but not written by) Paul Bley. The centerpiece is a 16:40 version of Carla Bley’s “Ida Lupino” that melts the original’s melody into a churning textural mass, and then slowly reassembles it. On another Carla Bley composition, “King Korn,” an iridescent bowed bass clears space for a Thomas’ leaping clusters, and “Monk’s Mood” magnifies the tune’s chasmic gaps and springy, wandering rhythms. Mid-20th century jazz often got compared to Cubism; the way that Bleyschool magnifies and distorts their material’s angles and shapes feels very true to that model without sounding like it’s of that time.

Vernal Scuzz — Vernal Scuzz (Sweet Wreath)
Vernal Scuzz by Vernal Scuzz
Jasper Lee birthed Vernal Scuzz after Silica Gel dissolved, and this new group’s debut shows off a darker and murkier side of the Sweet Wreath ecosystem. They’re collecting mutant spores from the sooty catacombs of 1980s Manchester rather than grass clippings from medieval pastures. Tight, punchy post-punk rhythms bathe in a fizzy stew of broken circuitry and rangy structures that the band intersperse with arcane rites and translucent melodies. Album opener “La Durée” fools us into thinking we’re in for turn of the millennium post-punk revivalism, but the rest of the songs are steeped in a simmering chaos akin to Liars’ They Were Wrong, So We Drowned. The odd swatch of spoken word finds Lee looking back at the folky leanings of his previous outfit, but Vernal Scuzz would rather rock out than revisit the songs of our ancestors. Their dank, punky energy certainly tingles the eardrums.

I just finished: Psycholonials!
Tumblr media
Fucking hell. Didn't expect that. To be honest I don't know what I expected from the lockdown project of Andrew Hussie, the creator of Homestuck, but it wasn't a visual novel about a juggalo revolution. Well, I suppose that's not massively surprising in of it self - the thing that surprised me was how uncomfortably REAL it felt.
Tumblr media
The game starts as a story of an Instagram influencer trying to 'build her brand'. The whole game has a lot of focus on the absurdity of popularity and how fast things can happen through the internet - how something so silly and small can explode and then some rando has all the power of the world. The way the story plays out is, of course, pretty ridiculous at times and steps outside the bounds of possibility - but at least up to a point it felt like something that actually could happen. I can imagine waking up one day to find out some juggalo cult has tried to take over an island through Instagram. I don't know if BTS is going to take over South Korea though.
Tumblr media
This game has raised my respect for Hussie as an artist by a lot - the game is evocative, uncomfortable - like proper art or something? Many may dislike how flawed the game's characters are, the main character is honestly a bit of a bastard - but the fact the game leaves you confused how to feel is what makes it good. Art should be uncomfortable and confusing, make you ask questions, and video games often fail to even attempt this. Not to say all art has to be like this, but a lack of it is part of why so many video games are dismissable and seen as childish.
Tumblr media
As an evolution of what MS Paint adventures was, a visual novel does just make sense. The general style feels very similar to peak Homestuck, and the excellent music by Clark Powell now plays throughout the entirety of the game. The game does feel like a real insight into Andrew Hussie's mind - and while he never led a worldwide revolution the feeling of attaining sudden immense power, wealth and fame almost overnight from doing something patently silly is I'm fairly certain insight into how he must have felt making Homestuck.

Alright so, everyone knows that Andy is a popular guy. He is in the school wrestling team and he and his friends are like high society in the school.
You met Andrew in detention. You were there because you accidentally caused a fire in Chemistry class. Your teacher was very, very angry at you because you "could've burned the entire school down" and sent you to Saturday detention.
You knew Andrew, but not very well. You just knew he was a popular guy and that he wrestled. He recognized you from seeing you in the corridors, but he didn't have any relationship with you either.
Anyway, after spending the whole Saturday together, you become kinda friends, so he says hi to you in school and everything. You two also share History class together, so he starts sitting closer to you in class and all that stuff.
History class is one of your favourites and you are pretty good at it, so Andrew plays dumb and asks you stuff he already knows just to talk to you.
After sitting close in History and talking to you for a month or so, he asks you on a date!
You, of course, say yes. Let's be honest, no one would ever say no to him.
So he takes you to the cinema, and you watch Footloose because you really wanted to see it and Andrew wants you to be happy. He buys you popcorn and everything, and he is the sweetest angel you could ever imagine.
After going on a few dates, he seems eager to kiss you but he doesn't want you to feel uncomfortable or anything. So you decide to take the initiative and kiss him instead. He's surprised at first, but then he kisses you in the most tender way.
There is no boring date with Andrew. He is always in the mood for doing something.
He LOVES it when you go to see him train. You sit in the bleachers of the gym and he's always trying to catch your attention somehow, which kinda annoys the coach.
You two also love going on walks. You usually walk for a while in the park, talking about anything. You organize lots of picnics too, and he loves eating whatever you prepare.
While you love watching him train, Andrew also loves when you share your hobbies with him. If you like to play an instrument, he will listen to you rehearsing for hours. If you like to draw, he will always offer to be your model.
When you two cuddle, Andrew likes to be the little spoon. Even though he has a reputation as an athlete/popular guy, which makes him look like kind of a tough guy, he loves to be held. He will become a koala as soon as you two are together in bed.
He also loves it when you play with his hair. It doesn't matter what you are doing when you start playing with his hair, he will immediately stop and surrender.
Overall, Andy would be the sweetest boyfriend ever. Caring, lovable, kind, and most of all, the kind of guy you would want to bring home to your parents <3
