Kin's Charlie Cox talks tough days on set and perfecting the Dublin accent

'There was a period of time when I was like, wow. I'm really kind of dreading going to work'

Working on a show such as the gritty gangland series Kin brings a range of emotions with intense storylines and for Charlie Cox, there have been some days where it has been particularly tough to shoot scenes.

Cox, who is also known for his role as Matt Murdock in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, plays Michael Kinsella in the RTÉ series which follows a Dublin family embroiled in gangland war.

Some have criticised the show in the past for seeming to glamourise gangland violence, but when Cox read the script, he felt it highlighted how “gruesome and uncomfortable and painful” that life can be.

With his character, the actor says he wants to portray the sense that he is “so far beyond” the possibility of exiting a life of crime.

“You should feel when you watch him do the things he does, a sense of reluctance and grief and frustration and anger and fear,” he explains ahead of the release of series two.

With the show comes some difficult scenes and while filming episodes two and three last year, the 39-year-old admits there was a period of time when he was almost "dreading" going to work.

"There was a period of time when I was like, 'wow. I'm really kind of dreading going to work," he says.

“I loved the creative process, I was loving the storytelling and I believed in it so much but sitting in those feelings. When you do a funeral scene, you’re doing a funeral all day. You’re sitting in that grief all day.”

It can be a “very uncomfortable” emotion to be living in and often lingers after scenes finish, the actor says.

“My feeling with this show, particularly what happens at the beginning is that if anything, it shines a light on how devastating to a family and to a community that life can be.”

His involvement in the crime drama series came during lockdown when his wife and producer, Samantha Thomas, asked him to read the show while they were in the States.

“I said to my wife, is there a version that they would consider hiring me and we can keep the family together and we can all go to Dublin and make the show?

“I’d read it and I’d also just finished watching Normal People and was really moved by that and reminded of the kind of storytelling I wanted to be involved in.”

While first getting acquainted with the Irish ways, the British actor says the strangest thing he has noticed about Irish people is the ability to agree by simply breathing in.

“It’s that thing where people agree with you by breathing in. I’ve tried to put it in the show a couple of times. The first time, I was in a car with a guy, and I was chatting to him…I thought he was asthmatic,” he jokes.

“He kept doing [it]. I’ve tried to put it in the show but it keeps feeling really fake, so I haven’t quite got it down.”

As for nailing the Dublin accent, Cox was “terrified” about getting it wrong and spent hours listening to podcasts and even took inspiration from ex-soccer player Shane Supple.

“I listened to Shane in an interview and there was a texture in his voice that I felt was unexpected for Michael and I felt like it was close to what I wanted to try and do with him and his voice,” Cox says.

“Not to copy and repeat but he has a clarity — he’s very clear about what he wants to say but there was a complete lack of ego. The opposite of a Conor McGregor-type thing.

"That was the closest I found to something that would suit Michael.”

AZ/Merck & Co’s Lynparza sets new standards in ovarian cancer, say experts

AstraZeneca and Merck & Co’s Lynparza should be the standard therapy for a certain group of ovarian cancer patients according to US cancer experts reviewing long-term trial data. 

The companies were presenting five-year data from Lynparza (olaparib) ahead of this year’s American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) conference, which for the first time showed the drug produced an overall survival benefit. 

Lynparza is an important drug for AZ, the first PARP inhibitor to be approved in 2014, and therefore still holding an advantage over newer rivals from GlaxoSmithKline and Clovis who are trying to gain a foothold in niches in ovarian, breast and other form of cancers. 

ASCO reviewed five-year follow-up data from patients in the randomised phase 3 SOLO-2 trial, which tested Lynparza in women with platinum-sensitive relapsed ovarian cancer with BRCA 1 or mutations. 

At five years results showed 42.1% of women on the poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibtor were alive compared with 33.2% on placebo. 

In the double-blind, multicentre trial, 196 patients with relapsed BRCA-related ovarian cancer responding to platinum-based chemotherapy were randomised to receive olaparib tablets, while 99 received placebo.  

The patients had also previously received at least two lines of chemotherapy and had cancer that was responding to recent platinum-based chemotherapy. 

After median follow-up of 65 months, 28.3% of patients who received Lynparza were alive and had not received subsequent treatment, compared with 12.8% of patients who received a placebo. 

Patients receiving Lynparza in the time between disease response and progression had a 26% reduced risk of death. In addition, 38.4% of patients in the placebo group crossed over to treatment with olaparib. 

ASCO Chief Medical Officer and Executive Vice President Richard Schilsky said: “This study confirms that the PARP inhibitor olaparib should be the standard maintenance therapy for patients with BRCA-related relapsed ovarian cancer responding to platinum-based chemotherapy – a significant advance for women with a cancer that has a historically poor prognosis.” 

Lead author Andres Poveda, MD, of Initia Oncology, Hospital Quironsalud, in Valencia, Spain said: “With the addition of overall survival data, this study helps usher in a new era of personalised medicine for women with this difficult-to-treat cancer.”

High-risk soft tissue sarcomas treated with perioperative chemotherapy: Improving prognostic classification in a randomised clinical trial

This risk varies depending also on other patient and tumour features, including histologic subtype. This study investigated whether a prognostic nomogram can improve risk assessment of these patients.MethodsData from high-risk STS patients enrolled in a randomised controlled trial investigating different perioperative chemotherapy regimens were analysed. Ten-year probability of overall survival (OS) and incidence of distant metastasis (DM) were computed using the prognostic nomogram Sarculator (pr-OS and inc-DM, respectively). Tumour response according to RECIST and Choi criteria was also investigated.FindingsVariation in pr-OS and inc-DM were observed and patients stratified in three prognostic groups. The 10-year OS in the low, intermediate, and high pr-OS categories were 0·42 (95%CI 0·32–0·52), 0·63 (95%CI 0·53–0·72), and 0·78 (95%CI 0·68–0·85), respectively. Patients in the intermediate (HR 0·51, P = 0·002) and high (HR 0·28, P < 0·001) pr-OS categories were at statistically significant lower risk of death compared with those in the low pr-OS category. Higher rate of Choi partial tumour responses were detected in intermediate pr-OS category. Tumour response according to Choi but not to RECIST criteria stratified patient survival of pr-OS categories, particularly for patients with intermediate to low pr-OS. Analyses conducted for 10-year inc-DM were consistent with results for pr-OS for prognostic value of Sarculator predictions and Choi tumour response.InterpretationSarculator identifies variations in outcomes of high-risk STS treated with perioperative chemotherapy and improve prognostic classification, which is also associated with different patterns of tumour response, an outcome that further stratifies survival particularly for patients predicted at higher risk. Leeds United appear to have won the race to sign Ian Carlo Poveda after agreeing a deal with Manchester City, according to the Mail.

For now, however, Whites fans will have to do with two exciting youngsters with deals for the likes of Che Adams, Britt Assombalonga and Andre Gray no closer to completion.

One day after Chievo goalkeeper Elia Caprile was unveiled at Elland Road, the 18-year-old is set to be joined by another promising talent; one who has honed his considerable qualities under the legendary Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.

The Mail reports that Leeds are on the verge of sealing a deal to sign Poveda, a one time Barcelona and Arsenal prospect, after a breakthrough in negotiations with Manchester City.

A speedy and creative wide player who has represented England at U20 level, Poveda looks set to replace Jack Clarke in Marcelo Bielsa’s squad, although he still has plenty to prove with just 90 minutes of senior football under his belt.

Leeds, however, have failed to score in each of their last three games and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Bielsa throw Poveda in at the deep end, particularly with Helder Costa, Pablo Hernandez and Gianni Alioski struggling for form.

The Mail reported recently that Scottish champions Celtic were interested in Poveda but the mutual admiration between Bielsa and Guardiola appears to have given Leeds a clear advantage.

Aquí la carta que ha estado circulando en francés e inglés e donde varios artistas, curadores y profesionales de museos de arte invitan a adherir la carta y protestar por el injusto despido a Maria Inés Rodríguez del CAPC de Burdeos

El 8 de marzo, el día internacional de los derechos de la mujer, nos enteramos por la prensa que Maria Inés Rodríguez será pronto retirada de su puesto como Directora del CAPC, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Burdeos. En Francia, el número de mujeres directoras, presidentes y cabezas de instituciones culturales es tan pequeño, que este anuncio marca una regresión más en la paridad del fuertemente masculino mundo del arte francés.

Estamos estupefactos ante este retiro anunciado de una excelente profesional que es reconocida interacionalmente por su curiosidad, la pertinencia de su programa curatorial, y la calidad de sus exposiciones. Maria Inés Rodríguez ha relanzado la dinámica del CAPC, con retrospectivas dedicadas de Beatriz Gonzalez, Alejandro Jodorowsky, Judy Chicago y Franz Erhard Walther, ganador del León de Oro en la 57 Bienal de Venecia, 2017. Ha brindado un lugar preponderante a la colección, que es excepcional, y la ha hecho permanentemente visible al público. Desde que fue contratada en 2013, ha promocionado el programa de ‘Amigos del CAPC’ y ha tenido éxito desarrollando colaboraciones y patrocinios, un rasgo fundamental en el rol de los directores de museo ahora que la financiación pública se ha hecho mucho más escasa. Somos profesionales del arte, queremos a los museos y a sus públicos. Para nosotros, transmitir el goce y la inteligencia de las obras de arte al mayor número de personas es un asunto crucial. Nos revuelve el estómago ver que, a través de los años, de una directora del CAPC a otra, recurren los mismos problemas: presiones constantes sobre la dirección del museo, que queda atrapada en los corsets de la administración municipal, falta de apoyo institucional, y el debilitamiento de la estabilidad financiera. El CAPC tiene una historia prestigiosa de importancia en el horizonte internacional. Sería un error dramático cortarla por motivaciones políticas de vista corta.

Al anunciar la realización, por segundo año, del “Mérida Restaurant Week”, el alcalde de Mérida, Mauricio Vila Dosal, señaló que esta segunda edición, la cual se llevará a cabo del 13 al 19 de marzo, viene consolidar a la ciudad de Mérida como un destino turístico cultural. Agregó que Mérida ha sido calificada por una publicación especializada, que es Food and Travel Readers Award, como el mejor destino gastronómico del país. De esta manera, continuó, vemos que se está consolidando no solamente con la calidad de restaurantes que se están abriendo en la ciudad, sino con su calidad y por sus chefs reconocidos a nivel local, nacional e internacional. -Esta distinción, además de reconocer nuestros guisos, es también un reconocimiento a nuestra industria gastronómica, una de las de mayor dinamismo en Mérida-, reiteró. Ante los medios de comunicación e invitados especiales, que se dieron cita en el Patio Central del Centro Cultural Olimpo, el alcalde Recordó que en  2016, el balance final de este evento fue de una asistencia estimada en 600 mil personas y una derrama calculada en $60 millones, con la participación de más de 270 establecimientos de 150 marcas  de restaurantes y un considerable aumento en las ventas. Señaló que el fin de este programa no solamente es aumentar las ventas, sino que cada vez más gente pueda conocer los restaurantes que aquí participan. -El Restaurant Week ya es una noticia a  nivel nacional, incluso la directiva nacional de la Canirac está interesada en conocer que es lo que se hizo en Mérida para que esto se pueda exportar a otras ciudades del país, por tal motivo esa semana estará su presidente nacional en la ciudad, Hugo Vela Reyna, lo cual nos llena de orgullo de que seamos referencia de que las cosas se están haciendo bien,-expresó.   Asimismo Vila Dosal, destacó la coordinación entre el Ayuntamiento y la Canirac para llevar  adelante este evento en el que todos los meridanos podrán disfrutar de una gama amplia de menús a un precio accesible.

El presidente de la Cámara de la Industria Restaurantera y Alimentos Condimentados en Yucatán (CANIRAC), Carlos Campos Achach, señaló que tan solo en su segundo año es ya considerado como uno de los mayores festivales gastronómicos de la ciudad. -Con ello se busca que durante una semana la sociedad yucateca acuda a los más de 150 restaurantes que estarán participando al ofrecer un menú por 109 pesos. Durante 7 días los invitamos a conocer más de 150 restaurantes de concina tradicional, italiana, Japonesa, libanesa, americana, alemana, mexicana, yucateca, china y gourmet. Recordó que este programa se ha realizando en otras ciudades del mundo como Nueva York, Barcelona, Shangai, Florencia, Sao Paulo, Toronto y San Diego California, por mencionar algunos. Asimismo agradeció al alcalde de Mérida, Mauricio Vila Dosal, por su confianza y apoyo en este evento para el disfrute de los meridanos, al igual que a los funcionarios del ayuntamiento, al coordinador General de Política Comunitaria, Víctor Hugo Lozano Poveda y la directora de Turismo y Promoción Económica, Carolina Cárdenas Sosa y los patrocinadores. Por su parte Álvaro Mimenza Aguiar, señaló que esta segunda edición se tomó en cuenta los comentarios de la ciudadanía que participó en el 2016, entre ellas tener fuentes de información para conocer los restaurantes participantes para que las personas se organicen y puedan acudir. -Decidimos este año crear una aplicación para celular, donde se tendrá toda la información sobre el Restaurant Week en 4 apartados, como son, lista de restaurantes participantes, ubicación, clasificación por tipo de comida y un álbum con las fotos de los menús que se van a ofrecer. Agregó que, entre las novedades de esta edición es que se cuenta con  la APP disponible en Google Play y App Store, por lo que invitó a las personas a descargarlo en su celular para que puedan organizarse mejor y ver lo que cada restaurante ofrece cerca de su zona o cualquier parte de la ciudad. Explicó que la página www.meridarestaurantweek.com, tendrá información precisa sobre los restaurantes, sus ubicaciones y los menús que ofrecerán durante esa semana. Esta página, continuó,  registro el año pasado 120 mil visitas en 15 días. Las redes sociales también tendrán información suficiente a través de Facebook,  twitter e instagram, a través de la cuenta  @MeridaRW ahí habrá imágenes con el menú que ofrecerá cada uno de los restaurantes, así como su ubicación. En el evento se informó que hasta la fecha están confirmados 150 restaurantes, pero puede incrementarse, debido al interés que este evento genera en los empresarios del sector. En la rueda de prensa estuvieron presentes Gustavo Cisneros Buenfil, presidente de Coparmex Mérida; Ana Silvia Molina, representante de Relaciones Institucionales de la Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma; Andres Centella, representante de Bepensa; Victor Hugo Lozano Poveda, coordinador de Política Comunitaria; Carolina Cárdenas Sosa, directora de Turismo y Promoción Económica y Víctor Merari Sánchez roca, regidor Presidente de la Comisión de Desarrollo Económico y Turismo. Asistieron también los regidores Dafne López Osorio y Arturo Sabido Góngora, así como los integrantes del Consejo de la CANIRAC.
