something to be said about the erasure of women in the bolkonsky family. some of that is just down to the society they live in, but it's very specifically pervasive for them. the late princess is only mentioned once, in a conversation between two women (marya and her old nurse). andrei forgets about lise as soon as he stops feeling actively guilty about her and never talks about her again. nikolenka in the epilogue is explicitly said to think about his dead father but never about his dead mother. even marya, who has the important advantage of being alive, is often sort of talked around and erased. andrei tells natasha that he can't take his son away from his grandfather, but we never see nikolai sr. do any parenting. the actual person it would harm nikolenka to be separated from is marya, but for some reason andrei can't say that. what's going on, guys.
