We are bloody tired of senseless gun violence, are you? . On the night of July 26, #ChantellGrant, 26, and her friend, #AndreaStoudemire, 36, were shot to death at the same corner where they spent their days trying to make their neighborhood safer. This corner was where the group Mothers/Men Against Senseless Killings (MASK) @maskchicago would hang out with their kids every day in an effort to end gun violence and create a safer space in their community. A MASK GoFundMe petition has raised nearly $17,000 as of today as a reward for information leading to the capture of suspects in Stoudemire's and Grant’s deaths. . . . #mothersagainstsenselesskillings #bloodytired #MothersAndMenAgainstSenselessKillings #enough #enoughisenough #standagainstfear #endgunviolence #girlsagainstgunviolence #englewood #maskchicago #womenofcolor #feministart #feministartprint #womensupportingotherwomen #supportwoc #supportyourlocalartist #supportthemarginalized #catopus #catladytribe #sideeyegang #bggzfg #bloodygirlgang (at Chicago, Illinois) https://www.instagram.com/p/B0ll0pHBYJD/?igshid=e3nhf6n3huzp

[Image description: a 20-part tweet thread by ashley yates @brownBlaze on August 28, 2019. The thread can be found here.
Tweet 1 says, “If anyone really cared about Black activists there would be multiple stories on how many Black peace advocates have been “coincidentally” murdered in the last 5 years.” There is then a link to an article called “Community activist killed day after hosting community event” on tmj4.com. The thumbnail is of a woman smiling with her hands pressed to her face in a hallway.
2: I've been loosely tracking these murders in my memory. I'm researching now to compile and my suspicion that a disproportionate amount of Chicago activists have been murdered is checking out. So many "random" shooting hitting the EXACT people fighting to stop them. [frowning emoji]
3: I’m about to link these up, but before I do does anyone else remember a gun control activist (maybe two in a short span) being murdered in one of the Carolinas around 2015/2016? I’m not talking about Muhiyidin, for clarity.
4: ok, so, again I've been noticing a disturbing amount of Black activists working on gun control (specifically without ignoring intracommunity violence) have been murdered and presented as bystanders and collateral damage in intracommunity violence. Specifically in Chicago.
5: A few things I've noticed: 1. the shootings are usually brazen: daytime and often at familiar places for the victims 2. very few reporters offer any details: no/vague descriptions of suspects + vehicles, no footage 3. There's a sig lack of follow up, even considering the norm
Tweet 6 says, “Almost a month ago to the day two Black mothers, #ChantelGrant & #AndreaStoudemire, both engaged in anti-gun violence work with Mothers Against Senseless Killings (MASK) were killed on a corner the group has frequented since 2015:” with a link to washingtonpost.com/nation/2019/07/30/that-couldve-been-any-us-two-mothers-who-fought-gun-violence-years-were-shot-killed/ and a photo of each of the women, who are both smiling.
7: These next two quotes should raise questions that have not been answered. This wasn’t “wrong place, wrong time”, this was a corner the group knew and was known on. Both women were shot in the chest multiple times, broad daylight. That’s a hell of a mistake.
8: “For mothers to be killed in a place where mothers go to seek safety and sisterhood, I take that as a personal threat,” MASK founder Tamar Manasseh.
9: "They killed mothers on a corner where mothers sit every day," Manasseh said. "You don't have mothers killed in a place that is sacred to mothers and not take that as a message."
Tweet 10 says, “Henry Daniels was murdered on June 29th in a neighborhood he'd grown up in. He was well known in the community and many were familiar with him for his efforts to disarm gangs and discourage gun violence” with a link to chicagotribune.com/news/breaking/ct-chicago-violence-shootings-20190629-vxfj2re35vff5l3wif3f274ohy-story.html and a photo of Henry Daniels wearing a suit and glasses with a neutral expression against a white background.
11: From the article: "one man who said he knew Daniels informed officers that there were security cameras set up throughout the alley. “Want to come show me real quick?” an officer asked. He agreed, striding down the alley to point out potential sources for footage of the shooting."
12: I can't find a single update on this murder. No mention of leads, suspects, no released footage to solicit community help. Where's the footage? What good reason is there for it not being out in the public?
Tweet 13 says, “#DelmonteJohnson, member of GoodKidsMadCity was murdered in September of 2018. He was 19.” with a link to an article called “Anti-violence activist Delmonte Johnson killed: ‘He died as a servant’” at chicago.suntimes.com. The thumbnail is a selfie of Delmonte Johnson in his room, wearing a black hoodie. His face is cut off by the top of the photo.
14: Delmonte was walking away from his brother's basketball game and to a local store when someone pulled up and shot him multiple times. I've seen no follow ups or arrests in his case.
Tweet 15 says “William "Willie" Cooper was shot mere feet away from the front door of the office of his non profit in July of 2015” with a link to an article in The Guardian and a photo of Willie Cooper, smiling against a brick wall.
16: "Police said Cooper was walking when someone shot him from a dark-colored vehicle driving by. About 20 shell casings were scattered near his body, according to his wife, Sherry Clark, with whom he had three children." He was shot in the afternoon, broad daylight.
Tweet 17 says “Matthew Williams was shot and killed playing games at a friend's house in February of 2015. Police say a random man decided to "shoot up the building.”” With a link to an article called “Young Activist Shot Dead After Months of Calling for Peace in Chicago”.
18: I'm not debating people on any of this for several reasons. Mainly because so few of those who attempt to argue actually have enough experience or competence to offer anything substantial to address.
19: Yes, I'm aware that intracommunity gun violence is real. I'm probably more familiar than a large majority of people in the country...which means I'm versed in a lot of the patterns and behaviors of said violence.
20: Unlike white men, gun violence in Black communities is usually committed with reasons that can be explained. The results are often inexplicable but how it got to that point or how mistakes were made is often not that hard to understand, logically.

It cannot be coincidence. Absolutely sickening.
