Review: AF90 shares groovy new alternative-rock single ‘MUCHACHO’, encapsulating a one-sided relationship
Andreas Födinger, otherwise known as AF90, has been on the musical scene for some time now. Long before he created his own solo project, Andreas had been known as a founding member of bilderbuch and a member of the band Farewell Dear Ghost, perfecting his musical skillsets over the years. Now as he thrives with his own singles, from ‘Buy My Art Before I Die’ to new album ‘Big Business’, he’s eager to be heard. With his newest offering ‘MUCHACHO’, AF90 continues this trend of delivering a sound that’s both old-school and modern in one.
There’s something instantly so funky and hard to deny about ‘MUCHACHO’, pulling you in from an electronically spoken reading of the title to groovy guitar, tumbling drums and backing vocal pops. It’s all a little bit eclectic, a little bit fun and totally endearing, leading right into a verse that’s going to have you in a chokehold. Fronted by emphatically charismatic vocals, AF90 dances through the sound with a range that rises and falls from low to high, all while the soundscape ebbs and flows around him. With loose guitar, bass twangs, vibrant keyboard keys and rising drums, the instrumental palette grows slowly into an epic high, constantly keeping you on the edge.
Just as it peaks, ‘MUCHACHO’ dips into a chorus that’s stripped-back and undeniably brilliant. With drawn-out synth strobes and AF90’s playful vocals, you’re sure to be hooked on every single addictively unforgettable line. Slowly bringing back the instrumental slices, things pad back out with drums, bass growls and colourful guitar, making for an intermission you’ll have stuck in your head for a long time to come. Occasional backing vocal nods progressively become more intense as the track pans out too, with everything building into one hell of an eccentric rollercoaster. The bridge of it all is rather unexpected too, gripping you with a rock and roll-esque guitar solo and thrashing drums before one final epic chorus sees things out.
With such an evolving sound, you’re sure to be taken on quite the ride through ‘MUCHACHO’, and the lyricism is no exception to that either. While it’s left up to the listener’s interpretation of things, the track seems to explore friendships or relationships that don’t quite value you the same way. Through lyrics like ‘I guess my words didn’t mean anything… but I know that I’m right’ , we can see a level of self-assuredness from the protagonist, while others lead them towards unnecessary doubt. Continuing ‘I heard you moved away’, it feels as though this relationship is one-sided, not hearing this crucial information for himself. AF90 doesn’t hold back as he keeps going, admitting ‘why do I give my valuable time to people that don’t care if I live or die’, knowing he’s caught up on people that don’t deserve his attention and yet still struggling to move forwards. Contrasting so heavily with the track’s atmosphere and ease, there’s a depth to ‘MUCHACHO’ that makes it all the more brilliant to enjoy, even if you’re just after a catchy listen without unpacking anything more.
Check out ‘MUCHACHO’ for yourself here, this is sure to be an instant add to any playlist.

Review: AF90’s quirky new pop single ‘Buy My Art Before I Die’ beams with an infectious sound that encourages supporting upcoming music
Andreas Födinger has been a part of the music landscape long before he began his own musical project, known as a founding member of bilderbuch and a member of the band Farewell Dear Ghost, achieving awards and high praise for songs over the years while really honing in his skills. 2022 saw the beginning of something new though, stepping outside of his comfort zone and adopting a musical vision entirely his own, breaking down genre boundaries as he debuted as AF90.
This new project has seen a lot of action since, sharing plentiful singles before this year’s debut album ‘Big Business’ pulled together almost everything into one musical concoction, garnering Andreas a dedicated audience of over 8,000 monthly Spotify listeners. It’s safe to say his work has resonated, but perhaps the most meaningful single amidst them all is the sleek and quirky ‘Buy My Art Before I Die.’ With a vibrant electric guitar riff to open things up, as well as funky, tropical feeling xylophone notes and synth keys, everything about it is utterly euphoric before it even truly begins. It’s hard not to be drawn in and left feeling picked-up even on the bleakest of days.
The verse strips it down lightly, a muted guitar riff leading with clapped beats and charismatic vocals to front it all, pulling you deeper into the narrative and the more frustrated but comedic lyrics like the opening’s ‘kiss me where the sun don’t shine.’ This quirkiness is instantly another reason to smile even as the sound has dimmed, but it’s not long before the xylophone notes, bass twangs, drum beats and more build into the soundscape to rise into one hell of a chorus high.
Beaming with a vocal range that cascades through a higher range than the low-toned verses, you can feel the shift in energy as AF90 asks ‘buy my art before I die’, backed up by a soundscape of groovy guitar, bass, drums and an overall completely infectious mesh of pop you can’t get enough of. The rhythmic development is always keeping you on your toes throughout too, changing the beat patterns and progressively adding more elements like backing vocals and scattered instrumentation for a performance that’s almost theatrical in the complexities of its development.
Even without the narrative there’s nothing not to love about ‘Buy My Art Before I Die’, but the very frank and candid admissions about what it’s like to be an artist in a turbo capitalist society really tops it off, admitting the necessity of having people support and pay for your work — even when a lot of artists don’t like to ask that of people. In a world of streaming platforms, we’ve seen a terrible imbalance between the artists that need the support the most, and the most successful artists seeing payouts that don’t equate. With it becoming less and less possible for new artists to support themselves, this fun, light-hearted single is one that holds a much more important message at its core — you need to really support the artists you love, or they won’t be able to keep doing it.
Keep listening to ‘Buy My Art Before I Die’ in full here, and perhaps even consider buying it here too.
