Advanced Photography: Assignment 6: Photographic project (1/2)
Idea
Photography, to me, is a medium that can capture the true essence of emotion and is full of exploration and experimentation. Exploration is a big part of my life right now. Being the queer person that I am, I am very interested in exploring my sexuality and my own body. This exploration of my own self is something I am currently working on in my Studio work and I feel it makes a nice link to what I would like to create.
I will be creating a series of self-portraits for my final photography project. The portraits will act as documentation of me exploring myself through various stages of being dressed and undressed, cropped and full body images. Eye contact with the camera will be vital as I enjoy the confronting nature of sexuality. I would like to continue using motifs in previous and other works; using the same jacket from my task 5 and bringing in sunflowers. I have also been very curious with the concept of queer/bisexual lighting (Thanks to Katie in Third Year). This being the subject lit by a blue and magenta light, created by filtered lighting.
Referencing
When looking at reference material I found myself once again awing at Nadav Kander’s photography. I very much enjoy the way in which Kander captures the details of his subjects. Something that I am very interested in with his work is the way he lights a subject’s nude body. His work is highly considered and has influenced the way I practiced my work since I discovered him.

I have also been looking into how queer/ bisexual lighting has been used within contemporary film and photography. I find queer lighting to be very exciting and quite fantasy like. I found many examples and here are some that caught my eye and have inspired how I would like to work:
Janelle Monae’s Dirty Computer visual
Portraiture and the use of Bisexual lighting. Fashion editorial shoot by Francois Rousseau and Andre Atangana. (2016)
I am also a big fan of publication brand Dazed. I find their photography to be very innovation and young, appealing to much younger audiences. Dazed also has a specific way in which models and concepts are framed and I find this super interesting. Another publication I am very interested in is CakeBoy. The photography used in cake boy is highly queer and relatable. I find this queered body concept prominent in the work I am currently producing.
