Halloween Kills (2021)

My rating for Halloween Kills comes with an asterisk. Halloween Ends is scheduled for 2022. Either it will follow up on these events and make them all worthwhile or prove this 2021 horror film to be an ultimately unnecessary bloodbath. There are some interesting ideas here, the kills are creative, the violence so brutal they become frightening to contemplate… but is it going somewhere?

Set immediately after Halloween (2018), firefighters rush to Laurie Strode’s home and rescue Michael Myers (James Jude Courtney and Nick Castle), who resumes his rampage through Haddonfield. As the citizens learn of the carnage, they band together, intent on killing Myers once and for all.

Halloween Kills is right. This one has the highest body count and most viscera of the series. When people die, they die horrible deaths that’ll make you squeamish, and they’re dispatched in ways that will please gore-hounds. Whether intentional or not, this speaks to the escalating horror and evil Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) believes Myers to embody. It was horrific enough for Haddonfield (and audiences) to have Myers (credited as “The Shape” in the gorgeously retro credits but always referred to as Myers in the film) kill 5 people in 1978. Now, the body count is in the double-digits.

Though Laurie, her daughter Karen (Judy Greer), and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) have learned much since the last film, the rest of Haddonfield has not. Mob mentality is taking over, another example of the growing evil Myers leaves behind. It all seems part of a greater, sinister design. It certainly feels like writers Scott Teems, Danny McBride, and David Gordon Green (who directs again) are building up to something, but we're not told what. We're asked to have faith, which may be difficult for those who aren’t simply pleased to get an update to the slasher formula. We don’t often see civilians with agency in this genre, certainly not the way Tommy Doyle (Anthony Michael Hall), Marion Chambers, and Lindsey Wallace (Kyle Richards) do, which is refreshing… but does sometimes feel like just a way to have the sliced-and-diced people delivered rather than picked up at the restaurant.

There are several fears explored here. Trying - and failing - to overcome past trauma, facing a seemingly unstoppable opponent, the-torches-and-pitchforks mob… but mostly of bodily harm. The level of violence in Halloween Kills is quite shocking and is made more intense by the victims. They aren’t merely innocents; many are inside their homes minding their own business, they’re children, elders, married couples, and people we wouldn’t have seen in movies back in 1978 when the series was in its infancy. It again speaks to the growing horror; now no one is safe.

Though Halloween Kills doesn’t really advance the overall plot significantly, it does many things well. It cleverly uses footage of Halloween II to expand on the series' mythology. The continued understanding of what made that original film work is satisfying. The performances are all-around solid. Then, there are the kills. It may only be for the fans of the series but they’ll certainly be happy. (Theatrical version on the big screen, October 22, 2021)
