On a rainy night, Hazel was working a shift at the Café. Today, she shared her shift with Naoko and Dal. She felt more relaxed with the two of them there, especially since she knew at some point Rei would be coming there soon to see her. As she cleaned the counters, the bell rang as someone entered the café, it was Rei. Rei came in with a friend of his, River. Today Rei seemed particularly nervous. He was acting.. odd to say the very least. He wasn’t grinning like he normally would, so Hazel seemed confused. Rei would approach the counter with River, and quickly order.

“Hey err.. could I get 2 biscoff lattes? Andd . . uh, let me think.. Ooh, I’ll get 4 chocolate croissants.” He says. He seemed to be avoiding eye-contact, and there was some very noticeable awkward tension between the two.

Hazel nodded “Will that be all? Rei?” She said, emphasizing his name. She wanted to piss him off somehow, but didn’t know how.

“Y-Yeah, that will be all. I-I’ll pay later . . ” Rei said before quickly dragging himself and River away from the counter where Hazel was serving.

Hazel appeared confused at this. Ray wasn’t normally this weird, well.. he’s always weird but not weird like this. Naoko and Dal would approach grinning, they had seen everything that happened.

“Ooh~” The two said in unison. Dal smirked before adding “I can see the obvious chemistry between you two~” She said, which irritated Hazel.

Hazel would blush slightly, she felt an odd feeling in her stomach when Naoko and Dal teased her. She was confused on what this feeling was, it felt odd.. and new.. and it also felt.. good. Hazel didn’t understand what was going on in her head. She then thought to herself.

[ A-Am I falling for .. Rei?! ]

She said, her head spinning around in confusion. She would get flustered at these thoughts and absolutely go crazy. She just stayed silent as Naoko snickered to herself and Dal plotted for the worse. Dal and Naoko would then go to a corner and whisper to each other.

“Hey.. You think Hazel likes Rei?” Naoko said, smiling.

“Of course she does.. It’s obvious!” Dal said before grinning. “We should set them up and force them to have to talk to each other!”

“What? That’s too risky!” Naoko said. “It should be like a magical slow burn novel, where the two slowly begin to get closer..~” Naoko adds, clearly she has her own delusions as well.

“You know what, how about for now we just let them be.. Just to see how it plays out.. heh.” Dal says, before Naoko nods in agreement. “I’m gonna go talk to River, you know Reis friend over there.” Dal added.

“You know him?” Naoko questions curiosity about how Dal knows who he is. Dal chuckles before she answers “He’s Yvettes brother silly. Anyways, I’m gonna go talk to him.” Dal says before walking away.

Returning to Hazel, she had just finished preparing Reis meal. She then readied herself to bring him his meal. It was noticeable that River was probably at the toilet at the time. Hazel slowly approached the table cautiously. She was about to place the drink on the table, but her hand slipped and she spilled it everywhere on the floor.

“ I-I’m so sorry-” Hazel says before quickly grabbing some tissues and cleaning up the mess. Everyone in the restaurant had seen it happen, to Hazels embarrassment. Hazel would internally cuss at herself for embarrassing herself and spilling the coffee.

Reis' eyes widened at the sudden mess, but he quickly helped her out in cleaning the mess. Rei and Hazels fingers would accidentally collide, causing an awkward silence between the two, before they continued to clean the floor. After what had transpired, Hazel quickly remade the drink and gave it to him. “I’m so sorry for the delay, here’s your drink.” Hazel says. River then returns from the toilet while talking with Dal.

“Hey Rei,, what happened when I was gone?” He asked. Dal also looked confused, but grinned at the twos noticeably flustered faces.

“N-Nothing important!” Rei quickly replied.

Dal then told River that she wanted to tell him something, which was an obvious lie to Hazel. She knew Dal was doing this to set her and Rei up. River reluctantly agreed and the two went outside for a bit. Hazel was then about to walk away, but Rei called out her name.

“H-Hey! W-Wait, uhm.. Hazel.. If that’s your name uh..” He said, awkwardly pausing for a long time.

Hazel turned around and the two gazed at each other for a bit. Rei took a deep breath, and prepared himself to do something he's been wanting to do for a while. He gathered up his courage, and said it.

“Do you wanna .. uhm.. go out.. with me?..” He said, blushing like crazy. Even the arrogant and self-loving Rei could be awkward and nervous.

Hazel was taken aback by the sudden question. She wasn’t expecting for him to ask something like this, so she panicked. Not knowing how to answer, she first calmed herself down before finally replying.

“I’ll.. think about it.” She replied, before walking away.

Rei sighed, he felt like a rock that's been on his back has finally slid off. He sighed and took a sip of his latte. He was scared of refusal, it was something he was never particularly fond of. This feeling annoyed him, he hated it. He just wanted to leave and weep on his bed. He didn’t even know if she was gonna accept or not, he just thought she was gonna say no.

Back with Hazel, she was blushing like crazy. She sat down on the bench in the staff room, as she contemplated whether or not she should accept his invitation. On one side, she didn’t want to. He was annoying and irritated her. . On the other, she wanted to accept, and try out things with him. She was hesitant to make a decision. Naoko then suddenly came in, and noticed Hazel contemplating her decision. Naoko sat down beside her, and then asked.

“Something going on?” She asked, a bit concerned.

“Rei asked me out, and I’m trying to figure out whether I should accept or not. . .” Hazel replied.

Naoko smiled softly, and replied “Just go with what you really want, you know?” She says smiling.

“.. You know what, I’ll accept it.” She said, with slight reluctance.

Naoko gave her a thumbs up and encouraged her. Hazel then prepared for the worst, and stood up to tell Rei her answer.

She went to his table, and nudged him slightly. “I have made my decision.”

She then gave it some long thought, was she really going to go ahead with this? She contemplated her decision but eventually gave in to what she wanted to do.

“I’ll do it, I’ll go with you..” She says shyly, she then gives him a piece of paper with her number on it before quickly leaving. Rei was at a loss for words, he was shocked that she even accepted to go with him. Rei just smiled to himself staring at the paper.

Dal and Naoko watched from afar smiling, before slowly walking away. Hazel smiled and was thinking about all the great opportunities that could come from this. Why was she excited? The other day she was ranting about this guy who irritated her? It was clear her opinion on him was similar to A Cup of Coffee, bitter yet sweet.
