THEY’RE SO UNUSUAL, no.3. Cheap Trick, In Color. The songs on this album are tight and loud and rocking and riff-y. Almost as tight and nervous in places as the Devo album, but the big hook for these guys is the half rockstar/ half nerd dynamic and it makes that half-nervous half-rock make visual sense, sort of, too. Some songs sound like generic hard rock anthems, others are full of hooky pop rock energy. Man, I loved the idea of “Bun E. Carlos” and Rick being super annoying nerd awesome rock prodigies, just looking at the album in album racks in Danner’s general stores and Ayr-Way and Ben Franklin and all the discount stores where I got to shop for albums as a middle school / high school guy. I didn’t end up with this album until more recently and most of the songs I know here I know from their Live at Budokan versions. It’s a nervous hard pop rock album, this.
