I have a question, how do feel about Viren? Like, as a character? A majority of the fandom seem strongly dislike him (with reason), but I personally find him to be interesting, and I’m actually as invested in his storyline as I am in Callum, Ezran, and Rayla’s. I just really wanna know your thoughts on him

Ooh, Viren. *rubs hands gleefully* This is gonna be a long post.

Viren is complicated, and all my favorite characters are complicated. He’s powerful, morally gray, sympathetic (at times), highly intelligent, and proactive toward his goals. He’s also kinda hot when he embraces his evil badassery and stops stuttering for niceties to say. He’s comfortable with his thirst for power because he believes in the Narrative of Strength, that might is right.

And that is what makes him so dangerous.

i am wary of Viren. I don’t trust him to make what I consider to be good choices. Viren’s heart tries its best to be in the right place. He’s motivated by good things: family, friendship, loyalty. He acts to protect his kingdom, which contains untold thousands of human lives–an entire civilization–and which is part of a network of kingdoms that rely on each other to stand together against their enemies. This is absolutely a good thing to do for someone in his job position. But the methods he employs, and the tactics he uses, reflect a fatal flaw in his character.

Viren considers himself worthless without the power he wields, and he only values others for the things they can do for him (broadly speaking–Harrow running a good and safe kingdom does benefit Viren). Human (and elven?) life means nothing. Only results matter. 

This probably started when he was a child. My Viren Origin Story Headcanon is that he was a literal servant in Katolis Castle (or somewhere that allowed him to meet Harrow) and they became friends as kids. Viren’s very clever and dedicated. Harrow would’ve seen his usefulness and raised him to High Mage for the sake of his kingdom. But I also think Harrow’s “You–are–a–servant” was too specific to be a random insult. I think Harrow used it as a callback to a time when Viren felt worthless except for his use to the prince of the realm. Ironically, Viren’s friendship with Harrow could be a big part of why Viren feels worthless as a human being unless he’s pushing himself all-out to be useful. Harrow inadvertently (or advertently?) trained Viren to be this way. Or perhaps a toxic parent had already trained Viren to devalue himself. Or both. This makes Viren sympathetic. But it doesn’t excuse his choices.

However it came about, Viren’s gotten through life by focusing entirely on results. That’s pragmatism for you: the end always justifies the means. And much of the time, this will work just fine. But there’s a war on, and when push comes to shove, there are some lines that many–elven or human–won’t cross. But Viren doesn’t see the lines at all.

Viren offers the soulfang option to Harrow because having Harrow remain on the throne is more important than the life of a soldier with less to offer Katolis. Harrow lets Viren be High Mage. Harrow bestows rank and privilege on Viren, which Viren can use to be more useful, and thus feel more valuable as a person. If someone else runs Katolis, Viren might be devalued, and that scares him. He’s been devalued, and it’s driven him to claw his way up. He never wants to go back down.

Viren offers food to Runaan as a tactic, hoping to elicit cooperation. He treats him politely, even though Runaan’s an elf, an enemy combatant, and very possibly the person who murdered Harrow. That’s because Viren sees massive potential usefulness in Runaan, and he respects usefulness, even above loyalty to a fallen king and friend. If Runaan is willing to help Viren unlock the mirror’s magical secrets, then Viren can use the mirror to be useful to Katolis even without Harrow. But when politeness doesn’t work on Runaan, he tries the much harsher coin threat–switching the carrot for the stick. But Moonshadows are stubborn, and when he realizes he’ll never get the result he wants, then Runaan is entirely expendable, and Viren immediately stops wasting his time on him.

However, I always love the part where Runaan says, “You have succeeded,” and Viren goes entirely soft and eager: “Oh? Have I?” He’s like a little boy. “Did I do good? Did I? Please tell me I did good.” And it kind of breaks my heart that he’s so easily led by the opinions of others. If Runaan had been less honorable, he could’ve lied to Viren’s face all day long about that mirror, and Viren would’ve eaten it all up.

After sticking Runaan in that coin, Viren throws himself into research mode on his own, filling the dungeon cell with books and scrolls, even eating down there. And when he fails yet again to get the mirror to reveal its secrets, he loses his temper with himself and has a breakdown. Because the only thing that matters is results, and he isn’t getting any. He’s failing. Failing himself, failing Katolis. Failing to be useful.

But the instant the mirror turns on, Viren’s mood shifts. He’s successful. He’s calm, curious, eager again. Success is so valuable to him. And when he sees Aaravos, the archmage is like a walking reward for Viren’s persistence as well as a promise of even more power to come. Viren’s enchanted. Aaravos is everything Viren has ever wanted to be. He finally thinks he’s found what he’s been searching for all his life. At the end of the fight in S2E9, he says “I have all the power I need,” and that’s probably not something Viren ever really expected to say.

I honestly can’t see Viren being even remotely pleased to see his children come back from their mission in utter failure–and with Ezran alive and ready to take the throne, no less! “But they’re his kids, surely he loves them!” Except no. He only loves what they can do for him. Otherwise, they’re just bad employees.

The only way Viren’s kids will get back into his good graces will be by proving their usefulness to him. And I’m not sure they’ll both decide that’s worth doing. Viren can’t see any value in himself as a person, so he doesn’t value his kids, either–he really doesn’t–unless they’re capable and competent and successful. Claudia got comfortable killing things and harvesting their bits to please her dad. Soren doesn’t like dark magic, so he threw himself into swordsmanship and became the youngest head of the Crownguard in history. 

Viren is an antagonist. He makes choices that hurt and kill others. He’s certain that’s the only way. But he’s not looking outside the Narrative of Strength for ideas. If Viren is going to find redemption in this show–and that’s a big if but I’d honestly love to see it play out–he will need to learn to love himself. Because he does not love himself even the tiniest bit. He never has. And that makes me very sad. He can’t love anyone else if he doesn’t love himself first, if he doesn’t know what that feels like and why it’s important to people. Viren will never stop hurting and killing others in the name of progress and success until he learns to love himself. Then, by extension, he can love others and make better choices with the power he wields.

I don’t know if the show intends to offer Viren a chance at redemption. I think it will, but then, I don’t know if Viren will accept such a chance. I worry that he may see it as weakness instead of growth, since it will necessarily entail giving up some of the power he currently values so highly. I really don’t know what his fate will be. While I am very invested in the power he has to shake all the other characters up and drive the plot, I really cringe every time he hurts one of the other characters through his choices. I’m not sure there’s any named character that Viren hasn’t hurt or killed, directly or indirectly, at this point, and we’re only two seasons in. He really has a lot to answer for, and I’m honestly not sure whether he’ll survive that process.

lorelei never knew her birth father. he was young, from what her adoptive parents told her. in his twenties, not yet ready to be a dad. he never suspected that his brief time with the goddess of spring would leave him with a child to care for.

she only met her birth mother a few times — nothing more than a exchange on a couple of her birthdays, and however pleasant they were, it wasn’t much.

her adoptive parents were her real parents. they were the only consistent family she’s ever known — her mom, nora; her dad, luis; her brother, christopher; her sister, ophelia.

nora and luis weren’t high school sweethearts, or childhood best friends. they both found one another after each having gone through divorces from their first spouses. chris, the eldest, was the ring bearer at their wedding (at 6, he was barely old enough not to stick the ring in his mouth or nose.)

they tried to get pregnant for many years, but were unsuccessful. they went to fertility clinics, tried every trick everyone ever tells you, and had no child to show for it.

with nothing but love and hope in their hearts, they began the adoption process. that’s when they met lorelei, a five year old girl with a kind soul and bad luck with foster homes.

she spent the first four years of her life with the kline family, who were unable to continue caring for her when mrs. kline fell ill. and then she moved in with the farley family — they weren’t mean, but they yelled a lot, and their son who was older than her got a lot of joy out of making her cry.

thankfully, both luis and nora fell in love with her and young lorelei found herself in what would eventually feel like home.

it was strange at first, and she often wondered if she’d have to leave there too. especially when nora became pregnant mere months later.

“it always happens when you stop trying!”

“two kids in less than a year; you must be busy.”

“guess you didn’t have to adopt after all!” people said.

lorelei spent what felt like the eternity of nora’s pregnancy hoping that she wouldn’t have to leave. but when little ophelia was born, and nora and luis invited lorelei to “come say hi to your little sister”, she knew she was here to stay.

lorelei’s childhood was normal after that. the moore family lived in a backwoods town in pennsylvania — surrounded by trees, farms, and more plants than lorelei could ever dream. it was here that her powers started to manifest; suitably a surprise for all involved. fields would bloom in her wake; and likewise, crops would wither behind her. she either had the best green thumb, or killed every plant she touched (like many others, her powers seemed heavily influenced by mood.)

it was an adjustment, to say the least. it was thanks to the help of persephone when she visited on lorelei’s ninth birthday. with her guidance, they all grew used to little lorelei’s abilities.

she was a shy child (a fact that surprises people when they meet her now) but sometimes the world was just too much. hyper-sensitive, young demigod lorelei felt things more extremely than others, and so she started picking up isolation techniques.

her favorite was hiding, while still being able to observe. she didn’t want to be completely away from the world, just hidden in the shadows. she’d sit under a weeping willow along a busy town road and watch the world pass by for hours. now she often sits on park benches with noise canceling headphones, watching the world go by without feeling overwhelmed.

she’d enjoy her alone time with a sketch pad or journal; she’d scribble the hours of the day away until her parents or christopher called for her to come back inside.

overall she had a happy childhood, once she settled with her family. she was never popular in school, though that was perhaps a reality of her own making. she often befriended the people others wouldn’t and, when told that she would be “cool if she didn’t hang out with such losers” lorelei quickly stood up for her friends and told those classmates exactly what she thought of them.

never afraid to speak her mind in the face of injustice, her morals were as high as her judgement.

she became something of a self-proclaimed friend to the lonely, despondent, isolated.

many of them proved to be fantastic friends, wrongly misjudged by their peers. unfortunately, a select few proved to be emotionally manipulative and toxic — the most notable of the latter being her ex-boyfriend.

their year of dating left her insecure, shattered, and fearful. she prefers not to discuss it in detail, even now. it was only through the support of her family (even if they remained unaware of what was even going on) and their fresh start in another country that helped her to recover.

helsinki, finland became their home when lorelei was just 17. it was a new beginning, even if she hadn’t recognized it at the time. and the picturesque, european architecture would serve as the backdrop for her later teen, college, and young adult years.

despite her anxieties of starting college somewhere new, with no friends in the area, lorelei thrived. she pursued writing, and came to love her craft. she also tried to minor in illustration, but after two years came to realize that she preferred it as something done on her own time, than as an assignment.

her confidence blossomed, as did her powers. although she still had her moments of weakness, lorelei’s control over her abilities made her quite the local botanist. she’d spend her afternoons between classes tending to helsinki’s parks, plants and trees. springs became more beautiful every year, summers became richer; and during fall and winter, lorelei’s apartment bloomed with all of the plants that wouldn’t survive the cold.

ROMANCE — not impossible, but certainly difficult. lorelei has been closed off to love and intimacy since her teens, after a severely toxic relationship. but she wants to be in love. the idea of it is very appealing, and while she’s attempted to date or try putting herself out there again, when faced with the opportunity she gets scared and backs out. there’d have to be a lot of trust and patience from both parties, but it’s definitely something i’d love for her! all genders welcome

ENEMIES — it’s not entirely difficult to make an enemy of lorelei... though she isn’t antagonistic, she does become intolerable of people who push her buttons. it borders on rude at times, if she feels she’s been pushed far enough. generally they’d have to be rude to someone, talk down to her, treat her like she’s stupid, etc. she’s also capable of changing her opinion of people! so the “enemies to friends” trope is an option

Live Action Dumbo

So I saw the Tim Burton Dumbo in theaters recently and I thought I’d save everyone the pain of watching it by pasting my summary of it here. I wish I was making this shit up but this movie is exaggerated so far beyond the cartoon that everything about it is less believable than the flying elephant it’s about.

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

So, basically the plot revolves around 3 people, 2 personality'less kids, one girl who's personality is "I like science but the only way I show that is by saying I like it and acting like no one understands me while all my lines are delivered like i'm smart but traumatized to have no emotions because my mom is dead" while the brother's only defining line is "I can stand on my head for ten seconds" basically to show he's a talentless useless nothing. which he remains throughout the whole film. Then there's the dad, the only really decent character of the three, a war veterin who lost an arm and used to ride horses in the circus, reduced to tending to the elephants because it was the only job he had so the circus is going out of business and the ringleader sold all the horses because no one was around to perform with them any more, and he buys a pregnant asian elephant from fuck knows where because he wants to market the baby baby is born, he gets mad that the baby is a mutated hideous freak and insists it wont sell

there's also a shitty guy taking care of the elephants who abuses them for no damn reason other than to be a bad guy anyway circus leader tells the dad to hide the ears, and they decide to put him in a weird baby hat that tucks his ears in now the kids just for some reason decide to blow a feather at him and he likes playing blow the feather with them, but he snorts the feather up his nose, sneezes, and flies for a moment but for some stupid reason they think it was him eating a peanut that did it so they cant convince him to fly again but now he's addicted to snorting feathers i guess because he snorts one off a lady;'s hat when he';s being paraded around as a baby, and he sneezes, ears come loose, but he doesn;t fly the ENTIRE circus starts laughing at himn and throwing food at him the other elephants spook because he's scary i guess??? his mom gets antagonized by asshole going "hur hur they laughing at your ugly baby" she gets mad, comes out to defend him, dad calms her down, asshole runs out screaming MAD ELEPHANT and pisses her off again so she tears the circus down on accident and kills the asshole circus leader lies to the cops i guess so they can keep the elephant locked in a mad elephant cage, the circus troupe for some reason sing baby mine together then circus leader decides "i was ripped off, i'm gonna sell her back to the guy but keep the freak baby as a clown because people laughed at him" the kids meanwhile try to comfort him by dumping peanuts on him but he's too depressed to eat, and then a feather just happens to get in so once again he snorts it up like a coke addict and sneezes and flies and starts flying all over the place and snorting the feather over and over until just snorting the feather and not sneezing lets him fly i guess

dad gets forced to be a clown because he was ashamed of himself having 1 arm and didn't want to be seen, they do the clown scene but with a monkey at the top of the building and dumbo as a firefighter to snort water and put out the controlled fires jackass mcgee controlling the fires doesn't do his damn job and a clown throws a thing that activates a lever to make EXTREME FIRE OH NO little girl risks her life going up the ladder to make dumbo snort a feather and fly now people see him flying and basically shit themselves, the circus begins advertising their flying elephant then the BIG BAD CIRCUS catches wind and is like 'let's make a coownership contract for the elephant and i'll hire your whole troupe and give them a place to live' This guy is so obviously scummy it's not remotely subtle, down to collecting girls as trophies one said woman he claims is her queen who does the trapese obvious love interest for lonely dad because disney i guess and they decide let's make her fly ON the baby elephant for some reason figure it out in less than a week or so help me the bank is gonna fund this but only if she flies perfectly on this BABY elephant because big circus is actually secretly going bankrupt and relying on dumbo to fix it

i forgot to mention the kids promised dumbo if he performed well and earned enough money they'd buy his mom back also the girl constantly points out the obvious. constantly, at the worst times too so the performance day comes, they dont think they're ready but they gotta do it anyway cuz big bank guy is watching

We get Pink elephants but it’s people blowing bubbles that somehow come to fucking life and all Dumbo does is bob his head to the music and watch them, I guess the whole theater is tripping because everyone sees this shit going down but no one questions how in the hell bubbles are doing all this. This scene is short and it’s just dancing bubbles, for a Tim Burton movie you’d think of all scenes PINK ELEPHANTS would be trippy as balls but nah. nah it’s just bubbles and repetitive music and a baby elephant nodding his head to the beat

anyway it’s time for the performance but then jackass circus owner is like lel no nets no matter that it's illegal and puts lives in danger and may traumatize people no nets because it makes it a better show (he doesn’t get in trouble for this at all btw, just the lady getting mad at him and him like ‘hey it’s show biz hur hur’ so lady is nervous, dumbo hesitates, performance goes to shit when lady falls and barely catches a rope and dumbo almost falls off a platform but he gets a feather somehow and weee flying ppeople are like oooh aah but then he hears his mom

because APPARENTLY the big bad circus bought her and put her on display as a spooky scary elephant in nightmare island dumbo is emotionally nuzzling her, everyone follows him, everyone is there as the big bad circus guy is like GET THE BABY ELEPHANT AWAY FROM HER and no one does a damn thing no one protests they all just stare as he's taken away and then only after he;s taken away this fucking girl goes "i think that's his mom :0" big bad circus guy is pissed and goes on about how it's better to do things alone and to seperate them, and asks that the mom be killed the next day to sever the problem also bank guy is like "well the elephant was flying but not with the lady so fuck you i';m not wow'd at all you fail, get it right next time or no money" big bad circus guy then goes "oh by the way ther troupe are all useless and do what our troupe already does so i fired them, send them away" so everyone's pissed and comes up with a plan to rescue the elephants and get them out of the circus

circus freaks use their circus freaky powers to bust mama jumbo out, while dumbo and lady distract people with a performance and the dad climbs the tent to cut it open with one arm because i guess no one else in the troupe could fucking climb i guess so dumbo can fly out with the lady

they fly out and go to a control tower to open a gate for mama jumbo in a truck to be free, they restrain the lady but are too scared of the baby elephant to stop it from SWITCHING ALL THE SWITCHES AND TURNING OFF THE POWER OF THE PLACE big bad circus guy busts in to the control room knowing they are there somehow and just starts trying to flip the switches back and a dude is like "wait nooo you have to let it reboot first or it'll short circuit" \big bad circus dude doesn;t listen and goes apeshit on the controls, even whacking them with his cane until they spark whole circus catches fucking fire kids are being chased by big bad circus dude's henchman in to the burning tent dad has to ride a horse in to save them but then they all get trapped in the burning tent

dumbo is about to be reunited with his mom when he realizes o no they are in the tent and flies off to rescue them, grabbing a bunch of water in his trunk he gets them out but oh no the feather burned how can he fly i know, a dumb speech about how he doesn't need the feather and an allusion to a stupid keyt around the girl's neck from her mother which she throws in a fire to prove "i dont need it like you dont need the feather" \and he;s just okay and flies them out dad steals another horse to get out

they drive jumbo and fly dumbo to a big cargo boat where they just kinda.... walk the elephants on no questions asked to be shipped to india now the little circus is doing a new thing where they no longer have animals because they dont believe in keeping animals captive for entertainment, and everyone jsut dresses as animals instead

and mom and dumbo get united with wild elephants who foir some reason give 0 shits about a flying elephant with huge ears unlike the circus elephants which freaked out the end oh and science girl does one science thing supposedly which is making her dad a metal arm when we see her not making anything ever the entire moviue and she has her own science tent where it';s just a projector showing a video of lady flying on dumbo???? idfk it was fucking stupid groan what a piece of shit

“You’re going to run yourself into the ground, Gin.”  Mallory Andersen clicked her tongue, a combination of concern and mild annoyance in her words as she tossed her dark, damp ponytail over her shoulder. Her nails clicked on the counter top of Henrietta's Hideaway, the ocean grey-blue polish on them already chipping after overexposure to chlorine,  as her plate of fries sat neglected.

Mallory’s eyes followed the near blur of orange and turquoise that was Ginny Potts refilling water glasses and clearing plates from the other side of the counter with the same sigh she always expelled. Ginny looked back at her from behind ginger bangs, walking over to refill her water pitcher. If Mallory was tired of having to give the same lecture three times a week, then Ginny was doubly tired of hearing it. She knew that her friend meant well, or at least thought she did, but she was talking about things she just couldn’t understand.

“You’re so dramatic,” she retorted, not really denying her claim. There would be no use to do so, it was only the second hour into her shift and Ginny was tempted just a bit to just curl up in an empty diner booth to sleep for a million years. Her body was still sore from swim practice, coach pushing them harder due to an upcoming tournament in Astoria in a couple weeks. Ginny was finishing in the backstroke and starting in the front crawl, which was going to look on her transcripts and to any spectators who might offer her scholarships; but it was terrible for the sixteen year old girl who was scheduled to work five hours each night that week before tackling her homework and any help her father would need. He was getting worse, although he refused to acknowledge it to them, Ginny knew. They all knew.

Mallory raised an eyebrow, “and you’re impossible. God, you’re like a robot sometimes. All you do is work, work, work. I gotta twist your arm to do anything remotely fun with me.” It was clear that she was in one of her infamous moods, unquestionable by the way she waved her arms and slouched back in her seat as if exhausted by her. Ginny had become skilled in reading Mallory’s varied weathers, her first most useful skill upon moving to Oregon. She’d have been more exhausted Mallory in return, if she didn’t catch the flicker of sadness in her eye. It was becoming more and more frequent, but no matter how she pried, Mallory denied its existence; which did nothing to make Ginny more sympathetic to her small tantrum. “Are you even going to be able to go to the competition? You basically live here, when you aren’t chained at home playing housemaid and nurse.”

Ginny stiffened, hurt flickering in her eye for a moment before swallowing it down. To her credit, Mallory seemed to realise this was a step to far. She didn’t apologise, but she backed down from her attack and looked guilty. Ginny, for her part, held a stiff upper lip and turned to put ice into the pitcher; using the moment of brief privacy to push her emotions down. Her temper would only get her in trouble and make Mallory’s mood worse. It felt unfair, but Ginny didn’t have many other friends. Friends were time, time was precious for her. It was lonely, and it had hurt as her circle slowly grew more and more enclosed. For all her griping, Mallory at least was contented to just fuss a couple times a week but remained by her side regardless.

The worst part, was that Ginny hadn’t quite figured out Astoria yet. She was working every moment she could spare, they needed money. Four paychecks wasn’t enough to get them everything they needed. Food and bills left hardly anything for her father’s health. It felt like a failure on her part, unable to pull some miracle from nowhere to solve it all. Ginny managed to maintain her high grade point average, working between classes, on breaks and late into the night on her homework. Swimming, and if she was honest, Gymnastics, were her only leisure activities - but even that wasn’t fully true. While she loved them, they were only allowed to remain priorities because of one reason: Ginny was too poor to pay for school on her own. She needed every opportunity possible. Scholarships, offers - if she was ever going to be able to help properly, she needed to more than the local community college.

Of course, this all relied on her father’s health remaining as stable as possible. Paying the bills on his latest treatment had set them so far in the red. But so far, signs were hopeful. Ginny didn’t take comfort in hope though, she took it from facts; and thinking about all of this now was only going to make her freak out. The ginger was just barely holding it together as it was, linger on details she had run through her head a million times over wasn’t going to solve anything.

Turning back towards Mallory, Ginny kept a calm and leveled tone as she spoke, “It’ll be fine, I’ll figure it out. We’ll have tons of fun in Astoria for the competition and it’ll be okay. Alright?”

Mallory didn’t answer this time, instead tearing the end off of her straw wrapper and blowing the remaining paper at her face. There was a cheeky grin on her face, one that (despite the hurt and annoyance from moments before) was infectious just enough to make Ginny roll her eyes and accept it for the weird truce it was done in the name of. “Whatever you say Ginnybot.” Mallory replied, but her tone lighter, even if a tad forced. She’d still take it.

“You’re ridiculous.”

Mallory shrugged, “Maybe so, but you love me.”

“Debatable.” she called back as she walked away over to the window, to pick up an order; hearing Mallory’s mock scoff of offense. It didn’t make a lot of sense, Mallory could be selfish and insensitive, but she really did. Maybe Mallory wasn’t the best friend in the world, but if she was honest, Ginny was far from it as well.

They deserved each other.

The sun had already fallen by the time Ginny reached their house. An old family stead that had been passed down between Potts’ for who knew how long. She imagined once it had been a beautiful ocean view house, but several storms and lack of funds had left it worn and a shadow of itself. It was spacious, chilly, but it had the most beautiful views of the coastline, and there was no better place to stargaze then from their porch.

Or maybe these were things she just told herself to make herself feel better about circumstances; that maybe in her most secret of hearts, she still pictured the small house with the blue door in Philadelphia as her home still. Maybe; but she knew that was a door she wasn’t up to opening, so instead, Ginny found beauty in her present circumstances.

The living room light was on, she could hear the TV playing from the porch. Toby, her mind instantly supplied, as he was always the one cranking it too loud. She winced as she closed the front door and was flooded with the sounds of recording shouts from the TV. Highlights from a baseball game were playing on the screen. “For god sake Toby, turn that down! It’s after nine o’clock!” she shouted, kicking off her shoes in the hallway and tossing her coat on the hook before marching into the room.

Her brother, Toby, lounged lazily on the sofa. Still in his uniform from the Grocery Store. He ignored her, as usual. A habit of his lately, calling her bossy and fussy. To which earned several retorts of do it yourself, and I won’t have to tell you. A retort he did not take kindly to, prompting several arguments between them. Already gearing up for another, she raised her voice, “HEY! Turn that down! Or off. Or SOMETHING. Come on, dad’s probably trying to sleep and some of us with ears would like to keep their hearing.”

He rolled his eyes, “Dad’s out cold, he’s not gonna wake up.” Ginny scowled, snatching the remote from his hands. Toby yelped as she cranked the volume down, “Fuck off, Gin!”

“Then keep on low, idiot!”

“Oh my god, if you tell me what to do one more time…”

“What’s going on in here?” a new voice piped in, prompting both heads to turn and see Sean in the door, also coming home from work late. The eldest brother looked between the others with a tired expression. “You guys are going to wake the whole house, can you not get into tonight?”

Toby brushed passed Ginny briskly, knocking her shoulder as he did. “Whatever.” he grumbled, before storming outside.

Ginny’s eyes widened in anger, ready to march after him and tell him he couldn’t just take off before she felt a hand on her shoulder. Sean’s tired eyes pleading with her, “Please, Gin, just let him go.”

“You’re kidding me?” Normally Sean was just as actively on “Toby duty” as she was.

Her brother just sighed. “He’s in a bad mood, she didn’t call yesterday.”

The fight left Ginny at those words, the day before had been Toby’s birthday. She had been able to spend a fair amount of the day with them all before working a closing shift at the diner. When she had come home, the house had been dark and quiet. When she had left, she knew Toby had been, as casually as possible, lingering near the phone.

Their mom promised to call on holidays and birthdays; but her track record was notoriously poor. The last time she had spoken to her had been around Christmas. It was now May. Her own birthday having passed without a call either; but Ginny had cared significantly less than her brother. He had always cared more about it all; Toby and her mom had once been extremely close years ago. That had been before though. All she had hoped was that Gina Potts had put her work aside for five minutes to give her brother a phone call.

Apparently that was expecting way too much.

“Shit, really?”  Sean just gave her a defeated sigh as an answer. It didn’t excuse Toby for his behaviour, not when he was getting increasingly more dick-ish to them all most days regardless. Still, Ginny couldn’t help her heart from going out to him in this case.

The T.V. was turned off, Sean had collapsed into bed soon after. Ginny had gone upstairs to check on her dad, who was comfortably still asleep, before bringing her books downstairs into the kitchen. Setting up at the table with a cup of coffee as she poured into her homework. Math was easy; Math was something she had already cleared between her lunch and breaks at the diner. Science was a bit trickier, going over the parts of an atom. Mallory was in her class, so she knew she could copy her notes later. English wasn’t hard, but as the hours progressed, her eyes began to blur as she dissected quotes from Macbeth. Ginny had learned that French and Spanish were best done in the morning; it was too damn easy to mix them up as she conjugated various verbs after one in the morning.

She was on cup number two when she heard the front door open quietly, footsteps running upstairs and disappearing into the room she knew was Toby’s. Breathing a bit easier knowing he was home. Around cup four, Ginny lost track of time as she tried to make her essay as legible as possible. Not realising the time until she felt a hand clasp her shoulder. Nearly jumping out of her skin as she turned to see her Uncle Morgan looking down at her. Just coming in from his late night shift at the factory; his eyes sympathetic and heavy with bags.

“Gin, what are you doing?” his voice, to his credit, held no judgement; but laden with concern. Something she was becoming increasingly tired of. “It’s four in the morning.”

“I have too much to do.”

“You’re gonna be exhausted, Gigi.” the nickname prompting a slight smile in the corner of his mouth, “You got class in a few hours.”

Ginny gestured to her books, her face coloured to show as if that was exactly her point. “I know! That’s why I’ve got to keep working.”

Morgan sighed, sadness tinting his eye. Not for the first time, and unlike with Mallory, she knew what this was for. The feeling of guilt; the feeling of sadness for how unfair it was that the three kids be forced into these positions. And unknown by Ginny, a bitterness about how the one who could help chose not to. Thinking how her radio silence the past few months happened to coincide with the diagnosis. What could he do? Tell her not to? Tell her to forget her homework? Quit her job? No, as much as he wished he could, he couldn’t say that to any of them. As much as he hated it, this was the life they were stuck with. “You ain’t gonna get anything worth nothing done now. You got a few hours still. I’ll drive you in the morning, go get some sleep. Please? And don’t tell your dad you were up late again, he worries.”

She wanted to argue, opened her mouth to tell him how there was no point, but a yawn wiggled out before she could. Making her arguments invalid. “...okay.” Her body felt heavy as she rose from the chair. Morgan gave her a half hug before ushering her out of the kitchen. Ginny felt her body run on autopilot as she moved into her room and fell onto her bed, still in her uniform. A testament to how exhausted she was, even after four cups of coffee… more if she counted what she had during her shift, Ginny fell asleep instantly. She slept until eight, earning four hours. Not the worst. She’d gone on less. The sound of her alarm felt like the cruelest thing in the world; but still she rose up. Body aching, screaming for more sleep. Just like the day before and the day before that. Ginny groaned as she stretched and moved to change her clothes. Her eyes fell on the calendar by her dresser. 

It was only Tuesday.

It was going to be a very long week.

I’ve been a huge fan of Minitube. I use it nearly every work day to run interesting videos to give me a nice sound backdrop to work by. Mostly, I find myself playing AMVs, but I also enjoy just typing in random stuff to see what it starts playing.

However, a few weeks ago, it just suddenly stopped working. I was sad, but there was a lot of stuff going on, so I just left it broken. Today, I found the fix.

Minitube Linux

On Minitube’s install page, Flavio mentions removing the phonon-backend-xine package as a possible solution. I tried it, and it worked. Given that I don’t know what other software may rely on this, I tried reinstalling the package, and Minitube still worked. After rebooting, I found that it no longer worked again, so it seems that the package does need to stay removed. I’ve updated the following to only show removing the package.

Here’s how you can do what I did.

Emil Mihaescu, Modex Head of Delivery – Our technology will help build trust between people!

#WeAreModex series of interviews with the tech team continues with Emil Mihaescu, Head of Delivery. The topics of our discussion ranged from digital transformation through innovative technologies and how to better stay connected during the pandemic to the need for developers and the future of the blockchain and fintech industries.  

With a Master in Project Management, Emil’s career is mainly linked to banking software. After graduating from University, Emil has been selected for a banking project in Italy, in the beautiful city of Verona. “I worked there for three years and I learnt a lot about banking software, about strictness in development, and about testing. I even had my first touch in managing a team when they gave me a team of three.” 

Emil then worked in telecom software, tracking and tracing products, but the most comprehensive experience he had remains in banking, with one of the most successful banking software companies in the world. “I started there as a member of the programmers team, we were two, and went up to leading multiple teams, multiple projects on different countries and continents.”

Programming and chess have a lot in common

We were curious to find out how did Emil’s passion for technology started. “My father had the biggest merit here”, recalls Emil. “He used to be one of the best programmers in my home town. My passion for technology came from the moments when I went to my father’s office. Back then, computers were like refrigerators today. When I was going to his work place, I needed to have a sweater with me, even if outside there were 30+ degrees.” 

“Later on, my dad showed me one of the first x286 computers in the country. Probably that was the moment when somewhere deep inside me I knew this would be my future. Those computers allowed me to play a new kind of games. On the other hand, I’ve always considered that programming is like playing chess: you constantly need to have your mind up to speed, to pay attention, to anticipate the next steps, and have a vision on things, a clear overview. And I like playing chess!”

Modex – a new professional challenge for Emil

An important chapter in Emil’s career is represented by Modex. “I used to work with several people from Modex, many of them are also from my home town. The opportunity to join Modex came after a friendly ad-hoc discussion with Alin Iftemi, when I told him I needed a new challenge, a new beginning in my career. A couple of hours later he called me, asking: ‘When can you join our team? We have so many upcoming projects, and we need people.'”

Joining Modex was a smooth process. “Although I’ve joined Modex this spring, during the country’s first lockdown, I had a smooth introduction. After reading all the procedures, documents, and workflows during the first days, I had one-on-one meetings with the people from the team. I then took over a few tasks for Moneymailme – a money transfer and chat app developed by Modex’s founders – and another application. When I joined Modex, Moneymailme was already a stable, grown-up project, so I’ve only dealt with the certification for PCI-DSS that we need to maintain on a monthly basis.

Not long after that we started two important custom development projects for some American customers – tailored implementations for clients who have already chosen Modex’s business solutions – and since then my main focus has been on these projects. I have to manage multiple teams of business analysts, developers, designers, and testers for both projects. Also, I’m in charge of handling customer relationship and, of course deliver as per the promise, in time and in good quality.”

How would Emil describe Modex for someone who doesn’t know the company? “I believe I can describe Modex in two words: smart and new. At Modex I’ve met top level people, top level technology guys, smart, and always willing to get the job done. All the solutions which Modex proposes are next level technologies.” Emil also shared his thoughts on the working environment at Modex. “As I was saying, I joined the company in the first days of the spring lockdown, so I’ve met in person only several people. However, I can firmly say that my colleagues are knowledgeable, professionals and I can always rely on them. I believe these are a few characteristics for a successful team!”

The most enjoyable parts of the tech career

Looking back at the various stages of his professional evolution, Emil pinpoints the most pleasant ones. “I have many parts of my career that I can choose. I enjoyed a lot being a programmer, and sometimes I miss this. I will never say no if there will be a need for my skills in this area. Also, the experience in running multiple teams, running multiple projects, strategic thinking, organizing, taking out the best of the people, put them to work in the area when they can maximize their input – all these have been points where I enjoy working a lot. To see a project starting from scratch with a few lines of requirements, building it stone by stone, and turning it into a real platform, with real customers, surpass all the challenges from people, estimations, deliveries, and technical issues – this is the job. It always keeps you plugged into your work.”
