ficlet ft batmen and robins

I couldn’t get this out of my head, SO. this is set pre-DCeased/normal timeline (for Bruce, Dick and Tim) and post-DCeased: Hope at World’s End #5 (Damian and Steph)

It’s a totally normal evening in the Cave, Bruce is at the computer doing some detective work, Dick and Tim are sparring but mostly gossiping about their various teammates, and then an alert goes off. Temporal anomaly.

Dick’s all casual, “Haven’t had one of those in a while,” and Tim’s curious, because time travel is always interesting. Often frustrating, always headache-inducing, but definitely more interesting than their previous conversation.

There’s a shimmer, and a portal is appearing. Bruce stands up, puts on his cowl, and Tim and Dick join him, flanking him on either side. Then two figures emerge, and the colors are familiar: black and grey and the bat ears; red and yellow and green; but it’s clearly not Bruce, and definitely not either of them.

Batman is tiny, and Tim has absolutely no doubt who he is -- Damian, near enough to the same size as he is now that Tim has a terrible, terrible feeling about the near future. Robin is a head taller and blonde and Steph’s smiling at them, but it’s-- it’s the same smile he’s only seen when she’s pretending like she’s not heartbroken.

Bruce is stock-still, and Tim can do the math, can figure out why Damian might be wearing the suit. Knows Bruce would already have come to the conclusion. He shoots a glance at Dick, unsure what to say.

It doesn’t matter, because Steph beats them to it. “Go on, hug him,” she says, shoving Batman’s shoulder-- Damian’s shoulder. “I’ll explain.”

Then Damian’s running towards them, flinging his arms around Bruce. His shoulders are shaking, and Tim realizes he’s crying. Damian’s saying things to Bruce, quiet and quick and private, full of emotions that Tim kind of assumed the kid didn’t even have. He’s so caught up in that that Steph’s words feel like they’re coming from a different world. He supposes that really, they are. “So here’s the thing. The world ended.”

Dick says, “Again?” like it’s time for a joke, and Steph’s smile cracks, just a bit.

“We’re gone, aren’t we?” Tim says, because Steph looks like she’s staring at ghosts.

“You went quick,” she says, like that’s any reassurance. “Most of humanity did. Earth’s done for. They’re building arcs-- apparently the best idea we could come up with was to abandon the planet altogether and hope the virus doesn’t follow us to a new one.”

Damian pulls slowly away from Bruce, and then flings himself at Dick. He doesn’t say as much, because Dick is the one telling him how much he loves him, how proud of him he is. Bruce looks shell-shocked.

“I’m guessing that you think we stand a better chance of stopping it before it happens,” Tim said, trying to focus on Steph. It’s strange, seeing her as Robin, trying to picture this strange new Batman and Robin, but… Tim is surprised that he doesn’t feel jealous. Instead he can understand, can picture the terrible confluence of events that would lead to this partnership, and from the way Damian’s expressing emotions, flinging himself into sentiment over the mission -- it seems to be working.

“Hopefully, but honestly, it’s probably doomed,” Steph said with an easy shrug, as if she wasn’t talking about the apocalypse, the destruction of the planet, of abandoning hope. “If it works, yay, but the kid needed to see his dad one last time before we leave everything behind.”

Tim blinked, and as Steph explained what had happened and how to avoid it, Damian hugged him, too, tight and fast, and then straightened up, wiped away the tears.

“We don’t have much longer,” he informed Steph, in that inflection of voice that always made Tim want to throw things at him, but in the cowl, what should have looked like a kid playing dress-up was suddenly-- not.

“I will keep this future from happening,” Bruce says in a voice that sounds harsh until Tim realizes that he’s speaking through a tightened throat, jaw tight, emotions barely held at bay. He looks as though he already wants to hug Damian again.

Damian says, “I hope so. But even if you do, it will simply create an alternate timeline where things will be-- better.”

He spares a second to glance up, as if imagining his younger, more innocent self upstairs. Steph wraps an arm around his shoulder, squeezes, and then faces Bruce directly for the first time.

“I’m taking care of him,” she says, and it’s a promise and a update all in one, and the dynamic of this Batman and Robin is crystal clear to them all -- Damian’s resolve and training and pledge to uphold the legacy contrasted with Steph’s determination and emotional experience and refusal to back down in the face of certain doom. “As long as I’m able, I’ll try.”

Their dynamic makes absolute sense and makes Tim’s head hurt all at the same time.

“Thank you,” Bruce says, and then turns to Damian, like he’s going to say more, but Damian shakes his head. “You already said everything that needed to be said.”

A future Bruce’s dying words to his son, and Damian doesn’t want them underwritten. Tim wonders if he’d do the same, in that position.

“Thirty seconds,” Steph says, looking at a dial on her wrist-- analog,he notices, and Tim can think of a hundred things that they need to back up, that they should change now that this threat is apparent. Neither Steph nor Damian has given a timeline, but Damian himself is a glaring warning sign. It’s close, and they have to stop it.

Then Steph surprises him by throwing herself at him in a hug, at Bruce, then even Dick, who looks surprised. “Keep this from happening, okay?” she says, glancing back at Damian, who is staring at them like he’s memorizing every feature, every movement, every sound. “Please. Don’t let our fate be yours.”

Then the shimmering portal reappears, and Steph is pulling Damian through. They can faintly hear her say, “We can’t just stay, Dames, we have too much work to do.”

It hadn’t occurred to Tim that that could even be an option for them, and the second the portal disappears, he feels the ache of their loss, the pressing and driving urge to save them.

“Write everything down,” Bruce says immediately, opening a file on the computer and beginning to type.”Both of you, so we can compare. I may have-- “ he stops to clear his throat. “I may have missed a few details.”

Tim can still practically feel the ghost of the hugs he’d received, the weight of Batman and Robin’s arms around him, and knows exactly what Bruce means.

Dick said, quietly, “It must happen soon. Damian wasn’t any bigger than he is now.”

Tim nodded. “We can stop this.”

And tried not to think about Damian’s words, about knowing that they had managed to bring themselves back to simply -- warn them, to create a new timeline, knowing that they themselves were doomed to their own hellish one.

Had brought themselves back just to get one last goodbye.

Jackie deserves so much better than the fate T9S has given her, which is the main reason T9S irks me. If the story was pushed to 1998-9, E/D's daughter wasn't named Leia, and Jackie and Kelso weren't a thing (maybe an offscreen J/H ending, with their daughter joining Lucy [not Leia] on her adventures?), I'd be legitimately excited. Alas, the premise is solid, but the details suck.

Anywho, since Eric and Donna's travel bug was cut short in my TWA verse in 1985 because of Kate, I can totally see them dealing with an unplanned pregnancy. Not in 1980-2, though. Because as I said in my reply to your essay on T9S's premise, I honestly see Donna having an abortion in most cases, since she and Eric are so far from being ready, it would be a disservice to their child. To go through the same turmoil she did.

The only times I see her not having one is if Eric (or Jackie, maybe) spilled the beans about her pregnancy before she could nip it in the bud (like in season 6, if she was pregnant), or if she and Eric were separated (for whatever reason). and her aching heart overruled her head (like in Drops of Jupiter). And Eric wouldn't even fathom naming his daughter Leia, because Leia was a sexual fantasy. Not someone he idolized, like Luke, per se.

To me, the unexpected pregnancy would have to realistically occur between 1983-7. After they're done with college, and are young, traveling professionals (they're working in Cape Town, South Africa in my verse), only for it to be unexpectedly cut short. Speaking of which, I have a bunch of chapters of Ebony and Ivory (the main E/D fic in my verse) written, but I only have three chapters posted. All of my stuff is on AO3 at this point (I only posted on FF in the very beginning), and I have a bunch of ficlets, moodboards, and essays within my verse in the Eric and Donna tag. And the Jackie and Hyde tag. And the Red and Kitty tag...

Yeah, I don’t blame anybody for not being interested in That 90′s Show. Different strokes for different folks, and all that. If Eric and Donna were treated the way Jackie and Hyde are being treated, I’d be effing pissed too.

I think circumstances outside the show/characters led to Jackie and Kelso being written as back together, and that’s really dumb, lol. I’m with you - Jackie could have appeared alone without mentioning any romantic partner, so it’s all left up to fans’ imaginations. Or sure, mention that she’s going home to Hyde off-screen. But the writers/producers have shown that they don’t have that kind of creativity, unfortunately. They were unwilling to do it when Topher left in season 8, too.

I have a lot of questions about That 90′s Show and skepticism too, but hey, I haven’t even seen it yet so what do I know? I’m going to reserve judgement until it comes out. Maybe it will suck. Maybe it will be great. Probably somewhere in between. I will take what I like and use it for inspiration, and I’ll ignore the rest, same as always with this show. It has disappointed me before and I’m sure it will again, but that’s why fanfic exists!

I don’t think Donna would get an abortion, but there are a lot of different ways to interpret the characters and of course we’re each entitled to our own. When she thought she was pregnant in the show, abortion wasn’t something that seemed to be on the table. The characters all sort of acted like it was inevitable that if Donna was pregnant, she’d be having the baby. Brooke and Kelso’s unexpected pregnancy was treated the same way. Roe v. Wade happened in 1973 so abortion was certainly legal and available (especially in cities probably, like Madison, Milwaukee or Chicago) but I don’t think it was by any means common. At least, not in Point Place.

I think Donna would be well informed about her options, though, and I think she would think about them seriously if something like this happened. I also think that finishing college would be a deal-breaker for her. And she wouldn’t want to rush into marriage, just because she was being rushed into parenthood. Eric would have to react better than he did last time, too. I think he’s capable of acting more maturely, though, and I also think that fatherhood would be something Eric would take seriously and would be the catalyst for him to finally grow up.

Hmm, I think their kid would be raised with a lot of love and support, not only from Eric and Donna but from Red and Kitty. I bet Leia had a pretty happy childhood (albeit imperfect). One of the things I’m looking forward to about That 90′s Show - other than Eric and Donna’s on-screen reunion! - is seeing Red and Kitty interact with their granddaughter. I have a feeling they helped an awful lot when Leia was small.

Lams smut - no, I don't know either

Here’s the totally unplanned smut that happened last night. I was trying to get some plot done on my ever-expanding WIP and, well, this happened instead? From the list of awesome prompts I reblogged earlier. It ended up being more feels than I expected when I first read the prompt, which I blame on the fact that I was listening to Vance Joy when I wrote it (also likely the source of the extended natural disaster metaphors). May eventually get absorbed in a ‘verse, but it matches pretty well with my current headcanons. Ficlet below the cut.

10. When you touch me, my mind is gone. The only words I know are lost inside your body. (right in there)

One of the many things John loves about Alex is his fire. He’s always in motion, brain constantly whirring away, and his inner monologue frequently spills over into an impassioned speech, regardless of whether an audience is present. Alex is a hurricane or a tornado, something wild and primal and uncontrollable, and John stands in the eye next to him in awe. Even in their bed, at night while preparing to go to sleep, early in the morning before coffee brings full coherency, or with his hands and lips running across John’s skin, the words flow out of him like a rive too powerful to dam. John loves those words, relishes how they start out discussing mundane topics like a paper thesis but slowly morph into the kind of tender filth that John couldn’t have imagined existing before Alex. (There are so many things he couldn’t have dreamed possible, it is almost like his whole life has divided itself into “Before Alex” and everything after. It is no secret which John prefers.)

Some nights, though, the words taper off. Dark eyes made darker by extra shadows, Alex’s hands grab a little too tightly and his words grow increasingly quieter, fading to whispers. John cradles his face between large hands and presses gentle kisses to his mouth until he quiets at last. On those nights, Alex trails his mouth reverently along the planes of John’s body, lips continuously moving though no sound emerges. John runs fingers through soft dark hair and takes up a running commentary of senseless phrases always containing the words “perfect” and “beautiful” and “mine.” Alex’s breath hitches and shudders at the soft words, hands trembling as he slowly works John open. John couldn’t stop speaking if he tried, even as he pants through the initial stretch of entry before cradling Alex against his body, letting the smaller man tuck his face into the curve of John’s neck and shoulder. Constantly moving lips tickle the sensitive skin there, but they remain silent, and the feeling is quickly consumed by the overwhelming sensation of another body moving inside him.

Their movements stay slow and sweet, so different from the games they sometimes play. John thinks in those moments that maybe his whole life until Alex has been a game, every move leading to one of the strongest men he’s ever known breaking apart in his arms before reforming into something even stronger and more beautiful. Like this, Alex is still a force of nature - lava sweeping across his body, filled with the fears and doubts that Alex could never accept. Hot and molten, but firming into rock as John’s hands and words serve as a cool breeze against the fire. Tomorrow he will be solid, eyes clear and steady, and when their fingers brush around a coffee mug, he will give John a secret smile that invites John to stand with him on firm ground before the hurricane begins. John will grin, because he’s a southern boy at heart and never could resist the lure of storm clouds.

For the moment, though, John holds the smaller body to his own, words lost in the rush of euphoria at climax. Alex joins him seconds later, but still John does not let go. Instead, he tucks Alex’s face more securely into its hiding space, humming softly and smiling at the soundless “love you” pressed into his skin.

2016 Fic Year in Review

looking back, did you expect to write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected?

It’s more than I realised, because I’ve done so many prompts and drabbles and stuff, and so they didn’t take as long to do (and they also got forgotten in among my multichapter fics and series).

what’s your own favorite story of the year?

Probably ‘I Want To Believe��. Because that was so much fun to do.

did you take any writing risks this year?

Not that I can think of? Like possibly in terms of crossovers I’ve done, but they were usually prompts. I suppose ‘I Want To Believe’ was a bit of a risk because Doctor Who and X Files are similar, but not completely, and so I had to balance each realistically, and write a Doctor Who fic where it wasn’t disappointing or annoying if the alien didn’t turn out to be an alien or whatever.

do you have any fanfic or profit goals for the new year?

I want to get the second story of the Doctor Who/X Files AU up (’The Truth Is Out There’), and do some more of Tiler and Tyler (getting into the actual relationship stuff). I also want to do the Bad Wolf fic Sam suggested, and also maybe finally start on the Billie!Doctor fic I’ve been promising myself I’ll write for the past four years.

But really, I want to get series that are already up finished, and then I’ll look into starting other stuff.

best story of the year?

I’m not sure? Like possibly one from The Parallel Verse, or ‘I Want To Believe’, but most of my fics have been little drabbles, so it’s hard to tell.
