has anyone else been feeling uncomfortable with the reaction to the new hunger games book? like i dont mean any hate but i feel like ive been seeing so many people saying how excited they are as a hunger games fan because they love escaping from reality in fiction .
like bestie what reality. what fiction . we are literally living and breathing dystopia the hunger games is happening all around us how are you treating this like a normal ya commodity
#so many ppl are excited discussing haymitch's backstory in the midst of horrible violence happening to real life people it j feels wrong#like atp it's not a silly haha traumatized character it's a raw reflection of our broken reality that should make u uncomfortable and angry#and yet the discussions about it are so entrenched in commodified book and fan culture. and feel so out of touch#like how the og books were written bc suzanne was flipping thru channels showing the iraq war and reality tv side by side#HUNGER GAMES HAS ALWAYS BEEN A COMMENTARY ON THAT FRIGHTENING DICHOTOMY OF VIOLENT OPPRESSION VS EXTREME PRIVILEGE THAT WE HAVE NORMALIZED#and instead it got marketed as a YA LOVE STORY .#AS 'TEAM GALE VS TEAM PEETA' AS IF GALE + PEETA WERENT MEANT TO REPRESENT DIFFERENT IDEOLOGIES ON WAR + VIOLENCE THAT KATNISS CHOOSES BTWN#AHHGDFHGSKFDJHGJKFDG#and we're living in a world with the met gala and genocide and people having to perform their pain in palatable ways on social media#just to get money to survive to the next day in the form of donations from people living outside of their violent everyday LIKE ???????????#they sent bombs into gaza on humanitarian trucks THAT'S LITERALLY THE FUCKING HUNGER GAMES#but ig you only care when the person getting bombed is the little white girl from your fav book series and not actual real life families#it just reminds me that these stories about oppression are only palatable to people when they're packaged up in a 'fictional' ya storyline#and it makes me so angry like#UGH#jbdkdfjsl sorry im not articulating this well#it just feels like such a meta narrative to see people excited talking about the new hunger games book right next to a post about palestine#how can people not SEE the awful irony#idk ive just been avoiding the discourse i dont know how i feel about it#shoutout to elli for that one hunger games post a while back you were so right for that#if i was suzanne i dont think i could physically take people so thoroughly not getting the message im banging over their heads#and i get if how you cope with reality is through fiction like me too but it's just. hunger games is not fiction. that's the whole point#it's literally social commentary on state violence and systemic oppression that got pigeonholed into a stereotype about ya books for teens#and i feel like pretending that it is an escape from reality is a disservice to the story and also just feels wrong#like it's a commodification of real life horrors and. idk how to explain it but it just feels wrong#anyways love suzanne but maybe spend your new hunger games book money on the pcrf or a gofundme or smth#ok im done
