Okay okay just imagine Inuyasha being taken in by the Yourouzuku after his mom dies because he saved one of their own and he’s basically a member of the pack since they love to adopt stray demons (yeah I made that up but whatever). Anyways, so he ends up growing up with them and becomes best friends with Kouga (though he refuses to wear the whole armor fur thing because his robes were from his mother) and life is good. That is, until one day when Kouga, Inuyasha, and a couple others run into trouble on the Eastern mountains and Kouga ends up battling a demon and falling over a cliff with it to what certainly would be his death.
They search, and search, but they can’t find his body and Inuyasha panics because his best friend is dead and everyone is going to abandon him so he flees from the tribe and they can’t find the dog demon either, and this is when Inuyasha runs into Kikyo. He’s grieving the loss of his best friend, someone he’s known since childhood, so loving her is easy in some ways. It eases the pain that he’s feeling about Kouga. Anyways, events end up falling into place as they did in canon (with Inuyasha thinking of using the Shikon Jewel to become human), though this is more because he’s sick of being around demons because they remind him of everything and everyone he’s lost in life (his mother, his father, his friends, Kouga) and Naraku deceives both him and Kikyo and Inuyasha ends up sealed to the tree.
And it turns out that Kouga had indeed survived his fall years before. He fell into a river below and was carried downstream with multiple injuries, but he survived. Ginta and Hakkaku told him about Inuyasha leaving and the trio searched for him with the help of Ayame, but by the time they found him it was too late and Inuyasha had already been sealed to the tree and there was nothing they could do. They grieved the loss of their pack member and would occasionally come back to see if anything had changed, but it hadn’t.
That is, until one day when rumors reach them about a half-demon working with a strange human girl and the Shikon Jewel resurfacing.
When they hear “half-demon” they immediately think of Inuyasha and run to the tree, but he’s gone. There is evidence of a fight nearby, but their friend is gone. Thus begins their search for him, and this leads them straight to Sesshomaru. Yeah, that’s right, Sesshomaru. Specifically, when Sesshomaru is about to kill Inuyasha before entering the tomb. Rather than the Unmother saving Inuyasha from death, Kouga races out and tries to attack Sesshomaru, forcing him to move away and he misses Inuyasha and hits the Unmother instead, and Inuyasha is then grabbed by Ginta and Hakkaku while Ayame stands with Kouga. Kagome of course is incredibly confused, but Sesshomaru still manages to get through the portal with Jakken and this time, Kouga, Ginta, Hakkaku, and Ayame join Kagome and Inuyasha in going to the grave of Inu no Taisho. Sesshomaru is so strong though, they can’t really do anything to hurt him and Ayame protects Kagome from Sesshomaru, taking her on her back and helping her climb out of Inu no Taisho’s bones when the air becomes unbreathable because of Sesshomaru’s poison. At this time, Kouga and Inuyasha are fighting Sesshomaru and losing, though Kouga is able to leap out of the bones with Inuyasha after Ginta and Hakkaku escape. Inuyasha still takes Sesshomaru’s arm off and gains the use of the Tetsuaiga, but now they have four new additions to their group and Inuyasha has a tear-filled reunion with Kouga because he thought his best friend was dead, but in reality this bastard was alive and he had no idea (his words).
