Jade + Aventurine analysis bc you guys can't read

A somewhat pretentious analysis of Jade and Aventurine by your friendly local neuroscience major (with receipts) (I am putting my academic knowledge to good uses obviously)

Let’s recap what we know about Aventurine

He is, insofar as he’s aware, the last surviving member of the Avgin people of Sigonia

Is he actually the last member? It’s unclear, but the IPC seems to think so (which will become relevant later)

The genocide of his people occured on the day of the Kakava festival, his birthday, by the Katicans, an opposing clan of the Avgins. Both the Katicans and the Avgins were exiled to the desert because of the fighting. The assorted clans of Sigonia were not willing to protect the Avgin people, and they knew that if they were to be let inside the city, the Katicans would follow

The origin of their fighting is uncertain. It is implied that none of the clans got along well. (Aventurine’s second character stor)

Why did the genocide happen? Because of the Katicans and the IPC

But wait!! I hear you yell, didn’t you just say the Katicans are the ones who killed the Avgins?

And to that I say, yes! I did! But the IPC is still the reason they died. During the 2.1 story, All the Sad Tales, during the cutscene with Kakavasha and his sister right before the massacre. 

“Little do the katicans know, this time we will fight back! The men in black that descend from the skies are on our side. The Katicans stand no chance against them…” (Kakavasha’s Sister)

This means that the Avgin people only decided to fight back because the IPC told them that they’d protect them, which they clearly did not do

The IPC also had a financial motive for getting rid of the Avgin people (and the Katicans, though that’s not relevant to the discussion)

We can see in Aventurine’s character story I, “And let’s not forget the letters from the councilors of the Sigonian Sovereignty. They denounce his tribe for once breaking arrangements and sowing discord… resulting in repeated delays in the signing of agreements between Sigonia and IPC.”

The IPC therefore had a very clear motive for deceiving the Avgin people and allowing them to enter a fight unprepared

To make matters worse, the IPC, the hub for technological advancement, medical discoveries, etc, could not save a single person? Not a single man, woman, or child could be saved? Forgive me if I find that unbelievable

“The clan launched a massive attack on the Avgin… who were under the protection of the IPC, resulting in 6,728 deaths and 3,452 missing.”

So… around 4,000 people were missing…? This brings me to my second concern:

The Katicans do not particularly strike me as the type of people who take prisoners - their goal is clearly to exterminate the Avgins

4,000 missing individuals implies that either

1) The IPC did not give a single fuck and simply decided not to search for them (didn’t bother collecting their bodies, tracking down the Katicans who took them, giving them proper burials, etc), or,

2) The IPC DOES know where they are, and decided to mark them as missing persons

As far as real-world tragedies go, I am not inclined in the slightest to give the IPC any benefits of the doubt. These are the same guys who nuked Boothill’s planet. And are currently extorting Belobog. And canonically forced Topaz’s planet into indentured servitude (and were likely going to try the same with Belobog). We don’t even know the full extent of the damage they’ve caused, honestly, and I don’t think we ever will.

After the genocide, there is an unspecified period of time between Kakavasha’s escape and his enslavement. The ‘indifferent man’ in his quest calls him a “scrawny brat”, so he was probably a teenager/young adult at that time. It’s unclear what his history was prior to that point, however we do know:

Indifferent male: “The guys in black didn’t say much…”

…the guys in black? As in, the IPC? Those are the EXACT WORDS that Kakavasha calls the IPC workers multiple times throughout the quest

It also means that he bought him from the IPC

So, at the VERY LEAST one department of the IPC was involved in human trafficking

It would make sense if the IPC had somehow captured him at some point, as he would’ve been like. An unsupervised 7yo in the desert. And of course, upon realizing someone survived the massacre, decides to ‘maximize profit’, for lack of a better word

It’s unclear to me currently why the case of Kakavasha tricking the IPC and the Intelligentsia guild is called the “Eghazyo Aventurine case” because this would have happened before Kakavasha became Aventurine, unless this is a mistake or mistranslation. The voiceover seemed to imply that the name of the case was aired during the time that Kakavasha was testifying, so I doubt that it’s called the Aventurine case because Kakavasha became Aventurine

Another option I’ve seen is that ‘indifferent male’ is the previous Aventurine, which I can’t confirm or deny, though it seems likely

Only thing that doesn’t make sense to me is that if he was the previous Aventurine, why would he call his fellow IPC workers “men in black?” Does anyone know if there are other instances of IPC workers calling each other this?

Aventurine is forced, by ‘indifferent male’ to kill 34 other slaves. He essentially Hunger Games’d 35 people. It’s also implied that it was broadcasted, because other people were betting on it and were making comments about he “looked good”.

At some point, Aventurine manages to trick the IPC and Intelligentsia guild into believing that the remains of Tazzyronth (or the Sand King) are buried in the unclaimed Sigonian desert, costing the IPC billions of dollars and eventually killing the man who bought him (rightfully so)

After that point, he’s taken to trial before Jade, where he strikes a deal: he gets off death row if he proves to be a good investment

Now, let me make myself clear: Jade did not save Aventurine from shit. Aventurine got himself out of a horrible situation by any means he had available to him, and those means happened to involve leveraging his situation and putting his life on the line to prove to Jade he was a worthy investment. I’ve seen people try to argue that ‘joining the IPC is what Aventurine wanted’ but I think this is a shallow and disingenuous argument because it removes the context of his decision entirely. He did that because he felt cornered, and then, presumably, because he hoped he could use the power within the IPC to protect other Avgin people (which is why he asks after them in his character story). I also saw people saying that Aventurine deserved to be on trial…. Which is certainly an interesting opinion. Mind you, the man who Aventurine killed was responsible for the deaths of 34+ people and was actively buying human beings on the black market, so as far as I’m concerned killing him was an act of public good.

A few more things to clear up about this situation:

In the IPC broadcast about the Eghazyo Aventurine case, it conveniently leaves out that Aventurine was enslaved, probably because that could influence public opinion; additionally, I think the erasure of the whole ‘slave’ thing was just to cover their own ass because they knew that shit wouldn’t fly

Aventurine was not ‘in control’ of this situation; too many of you don’t understand what coercion is and that scares the hell out of me. He killed that man because that was the only way he could be free, and after that the IPC sentenced him to death. It isn’t a choice when your only other option is death. It baffles me that people think this.

Jade does not give a single fuck about Aventurine beyond what he provides to the IPC because she cannot conceptualize relationships or the value of human life outside of a transactional purpose, which tracks with her being a debt collector…

Jade literally says, and I quote, “A servant should obey his master”. For the people in the back, A SERVANT SHOULD OBEY HIS MASTER. Who the fuck says that. Even if she isn’t personally involved with whatever human trafficking the IPC has going on (which I seriously doubt she isn’t at least aware of, given her rank), she sympathizes with a literal slave owner over his victim which is genuinely insane.

Something also incredibly important: Aventurine had no legal defense

Like… none at all? I’m not overly familiar with the US legal system, but even in this case I feel like there would be some kind of self-defense justification. Like. He bought people. On the black market. And then made them kill each other. I don’t think killing him warrants a death sentence for Kakavasha (especially one that holds over once he’s a Stoneheart)

This extreme overreaction on behalf of the IPC probably also has something to do with him not having an ‘interastral refugee travel permit’ (mentioned in the first broadcast message during All the Sad Tales) which also begs the question what in the godamn fuck is an interastral refugee travel permit. I can only assume that the IPC is handing out these ‘travel permits’.... Which also means that they are directly responsible (for the sole survivor of a genocide THEY caused) not having one

The fact that the legal system is structured like this does not surprise me at all. It was stacked against him from the beginning and we need to stop pretending this was a power play on Aventurine’s part rather than a desperate last ditch attempt at some form of freedom

Additionally, Aventurine’s banner is literally called “gilded imprisonment” and his light cone is called “inherently unjust destiny” like they literally could not make it more obvious. He just exchanged his old shackles for shinier ones :/

Something else I’d like to point out: Penacony has a grand overarching theme of “a cage is still a cage”; in fact, Himeko says that verbatim in 2.2! I think that’s also important to consider when looking at this situation. 

Also, Aventurine also feels so little autonomy that he was literally willing to kill himself to escape. Like full stop kill himself. His future self tells him that “death” is the only real freedom he will ever experience, and I think that alone demonstrates that the IPC has done nothing more but lengthened his leash. I don’t think it’s fair at all to claim that any of this is what he “wanted” or that he’s like. Enjoying himself. Because 2.1 makes it so abundantly clear that he’s fucking miserable. Like you’re aware that this is still coercion right. What do you think happens if he stops performing well? What do you think the IPC will do to him if he is no longer producing money for them? Quickly. Look me in my eyes

Now onto the elephant in the room: Jade herself

Personally I find her character design gross fetish-bait, but to each their own I guess. It’s not really my business if you like her character for whatever reason. I’m not saying that you can’t enjoy her character, but I do think people should be examining their reasons for liking her a little more closely. Or at the very least not making jokes about slavery. That is very strange. 

I’ve seen a lot of people say that we should reserve judgment for what her character is like until after she’s out; I disagree. I think we have everything we need. (This is coming from someone who could see Aventurine’s backstory from a mile away and predicted it in 2.0. So far my track record is unblemished but if you don’t want to take my word for it I have evidence).

Let’s take a look at her eidolons:

E1: Altruism? Nevertheless Tradable

E2: Morality? Herein Authenticated

E3: Honesty? Soon Mortgaged

E4: Sincerity? Put Option Only

E5: Hope? Hitherto Forfeited

E6: Equity? Pending Sponsorship

That’s a mouthful, right?

Eidolons are supposed to be the truest reflection of one’s soul and provide us information on the character themself. All of her eidolons reference a kind of transactional relationship - in which she evaluates concepts like altruism, morality, and honesty on a scale of how much worth she can drag out of them. This is consistent with what we’ve seen from her character so far. I find the specific statements ‘Hope? Hitherto Forfeited’ and ‘Equity? Pending Sponsorship’ to be… so sinister lmao. Like she is straight up saying the quiet part out loud. Now let’s compare her eidolons to Aventurine’s:

Aventurine’s E1: Prisoner’s Dilemma.

The Prisoner’s Dilemma game theory wherein two people, separated, must cooperate for mutual benefit, or betray their partner for an individual reward. This perfectly reflects Aventurine and Ratio’s plan in 2.1, and goes to emphasize the importance of trust that Aventurine has. 

Aventurine’s E4: The Unexpected Hanging Paradox

At first inspection, the ‘unexpected hanging paradox’ appears to be a regular thought experiment, but actually has to do heavily with probability. The Unexpected Hanging Paradox entails a situation where a criminal is sent to death, however the Judge does not tell the prisoner which day he will be executed on, only that the executioner should ‘surprise him’ over the course of the next week. The prisoner therefore concludes that he will not be executed because it will be impossible to surprise him based on a game of probability. This directly references Aventurine’s experience in court both as Kakavasha, on trial for murder, and when he confronts Sunday.

We can see here that eidolons are absolutely reflective of character goals, intentions, and thoughts. Jade’s eidolons are based entirely on a manipulative, exploitative worldview. Whether or not her worldviews include herself are up for interpretation at this point, but it’s obvious to me that she sees Aventurine as an investment and not a person. The first thing she comments when she sees Aventurine is how pretty his eyes are - immediately assigning material value to his body, which is especially gross considering she is well aware that he was enslaved. 

Then, at the end of 2.2, she makes another cameo - and Aventurine does not seem to receive her well. Understandably so. He mentions wanting to “escape her” during his phone call, providing us with insight into his framework and how he perceives her. He literally uses the word ‘escape’. He does NOT like her. Jade proceeds to call him “child”, which I interpret as at least partially demeaning. She also didn’t seem to care at all when she thought he died in 2.1, so I’m not really sure where anyone got the idea that they were close. 

As another note on Jade’s character design before I wrap up, I personally find it extremely uncomfortable that she has a whip. Again, I’m not going to tell anyone that you can’t enjoy her character, but there are definitely some extremely strange undertones that hyv is leaning into that I really don’t appreciate. I also think the greater reception of Jade’s character deserves its own post because I don’t even know where to start with that. 

So, giving Jade EVERY benefit of the doubt, we can conclude that she: she ONLY knows about the enslavement - but has no personal ties - and does not care, does not appear to care that her colleagues were participating in human trafficking (specifically seemed more put-off about the lack of revenue than the various human rights violations, which makes sense because she doesn’t seem to care about any of the other human rights violations, such as nuking planets, either), would have had no problem sentencing him to death had he not been a company asset, implied that slavery is good, claimed that she didn’t know why Aventurine would kill the person who owned him because it ‘didn’t benefit him’, is participating in the repossession of Penacony by the IPC, is a debt collector (derogatory), did not gaf that her colleague was going on a suicide mission, and did not gaf when her colleague presumably died. 

Footnote: Before you start, no disliking Jade but liking Aventurine is not misogynistic (and that accusation is, in itself, misogynistic), yes, it is disingenuous to claim that Aventurine was not coerced, it is also disingenuous to claim that the IPC had no knowledge of the human trafficking, yes you can still like her. Idgaf. And stop making jokes about racism and slavery, it’s weird and I think your brain should be studied in a lab so that doctors can determine what is wrong with you

In conclusion:

Media literacy is dead and the hsr fandom killed it.

Absolutely! I've actually been waiting for a chance to really dig into this. Like Rainhaze himself, his issue is written with a lot of confusion and uncertainty, and it's not very straight-forwardly, so I understand why his motivations are easy to miss. So here it is!

Firstly; Rainhaze as he existed in BarrenClan and Rainhaze as he is now are two very, very different beasts. Obviously he's still the same person, but he's gone through a mountain of trauma, violence, and was forced to confront the fact that if pressed, he would kill a family member - even his own mother. Sure, in the moment he was threatened into doing it, but it opens the possibility that he'd even do that. Maybe he would've done anything to protect his family then, but it's been a long time.

Then, over many months, he's subjected to propaganda, murder, and terrible treatment. His mental state from where he was when he killed Dustfeather is massively changed. He's depressed, listless, and much more willing to kill. Not only that, but Defiance propaganda has worked on him.

With so much constant killing in his life, and being constantly vulnerable, he begins to see death as a good thing. Something that ends suffering, something that doesn't really matter in the end.

So now we're at Issue 31. Rainhaze is in a "doldrum", like Ranger says (a period of inactivity or lethargy). He's so torn between his new life and new beliefs, and his old regrets and old connections to BarrenClan, that he's basically attempting to end his own life through inactivity. Ranger doesn't want this. Here's his plan:

Ranger knows that BarrenClan lives opposite the forest, across the prairie. He specifically orders Rainhaze to "kill something", planting that idea in his mind. He's hoping that Rainhaze will find one of his Clan members, and make the decision to kill one of them. This would push Rainhaze over into whatever full breakdown Ranger wants, and solidify his ties to Defiance. And that is what happens. So why did Rainhaze make that decision?

We already have the basis of an incredibly traumatized Rainhaze. He views himself as he is now, and who he used to be, as different people. And he belives that's completely beyond redemption.

Yes, all those months ago he promised he was suffering in Defiance for his family and Clan, but it's really hard to hold onto those noble morals when you're being put through hell every day. Rainhaze hasn't even seen his family in months. They don't seem real to him anymore.

Then he is finally confronted by Asphodelpaw, the symbol of everything he's put himself through torture to protect, and all he wants to do is go back to Defiance. And here we go, getting to these lines;

Rainhaze is a coward.

He's separated from Deepdark and Ranger, by at least several days. He could absolutely come home with Asphodelpaw and warn all of BarrenClan - they could evacuate in time, be far away by the time Defiance arrives on their territory. But then he'd have to face his family, face his sister whose mother he violently murdered. Have to stand there and have them look at him and know him and see the scars on his body.

When he says, "this is vile, pointless, irredeemable, monstrous", he understands that killing Asphodelpaw is a disgustingly cruel action. He knows that. He understands that he's choosing Defiance over her, and over them. But that's the choice he feels he needs to make to protect himself. He's not thinking about his family any more.

So he does something so completely vicious and irredeemable that he is forced to choose Defiance. Because there's no way that any BarrenClan cat would forgive him for this. There's no way he would forgive himself for this.

And thus, Rainhaze figures himself out, and burns every other bridge entirely. He makes his choice.

Not much to do with the new chapter but spinning Wolfsong in my head. Particularly the idea of Shapur asking the man who tutored him to also tutor his brother and son. I have to wonder where Shapur's righteousness came from— couldn't have been his parents in practice although as @honig-bienchen said they could just be hypocrites and not practice what they preach while Shapur actually committed to it, but for Wolfsong I think I want Shapur to have an outside influence as well on top of that. What do you think such a man could be like? I have the broad stroke vague vibes such as him being a younger son of an aristocratic or knightly family who didn't inherit and chose a different path instead but ???????

The only concrete thing I have of him is that, during the Wolfsong equivalent of the Sindhura arc, Isfan and Areyan hear about what's driving Sindhura to pick a fight with Peshawar (a succession crisis, brother against brother) and them decidedly Not understanding how that could've come to be because they sure as hell never even thought of such a thing (just as Shapur himself is having a mini confusion crisis over there in Sindhura bc he also can't understand them) and the tutor guy saying “The fact that you have never considered it means I have taught you well.” (grandmama Eihon would of course be talking about that whole when-does-family-stop-being-family thing we've talked about before)

Hmm, I don't know how much help my answer will be, but I do think it's an interesting angle to consider that Shapur's father at least may have provided the model for his son's righteousness, only to shatter it by turning a blind eye to what his wife did to Isfan and his mother. If he was also a military man, he may have spoken about being 'protectors of the weak' in broad strokes, yet failed to uphold that when it came to his own household.

A young Shapur who was very idealistic and saw things in very rigid black and white terms may not have opened his eyes and questioned what his father was saying before, because he saw his father as a protector of Pars and wanted to follow that same path. In Shapur's eyes, of course that would extend to protecting the vulnerable, the poor, the lower classes, the servants in his household. It's easy, when you believe something is logical and the only right and just thing to do, to believe that those you love, those you look up to, those you see as good people also think the way you do. It's easy to ignore the smaller signs that to them, some people matter less than others (I wonder what Shapur thought of the circumstances of Isfan's mother's pregnancy?).

In terms of your AU, it's a similar situation to how Shapur will later find out that [insert Marzban of choice] was responsible for the clan massacre. Someone he respected, likely someone whose prowess inspired him, someone who, like him, had been awarded one of the highest positions in the Parsian army, who had fought many hard battles to keep the people of their country safe, could still show such disregard to human life when they deem those particular lives don't matter.

If Shapur made the connection between the two, that's going to be a bad feeling for sure. Because he's seen it before, but he didn't see this coming. How many others are capable of the same?

But yes, a tutor figure would undoubtedly be influential and leaving the matter of Shapur's father aside, there's a lot of scope there for interesting conversations and perspectives. I personally don't think Shapur himself would have considered anything other than the army as his path in life, so he might be curious about why his tutor chose differently. I can't recall if this man is purely an academic tutor or if he would also have trained Shapur with weapons etc, but if so a young Shapur might find it puzzling that someone so skilled didn't chose to rise through the ranks of the army.

So, what I'm saying is that the reasoning behind it is interesting and worth digging in to. Was there a question of who would inherit, and he chose not to for a specific reason? Did he and his brother discuss it? Why didn't he pursue glory in the Parsian army? If he'd wanted to, as someone of noble birth he could certainly have entered the cavalry with men under his command right away. Did he specifically choose to become a tutor, and why? To make a difference in some way? Does he disagree with how he himself was taught when he was younger? What brings him to Shapur's household? Does he have connections there, or to that area?

I feel like I'm spamming you with questions, but I just thought they might be interesting to ask, and might help flesh things out. If the tutor is intended as a counterpoint to Shapur's father, it might work to have him as someone who ended up in that position (less prestigious than a high military rank or inheriting a bunch of land) because of his morals.

You are the man in the relationship. You are taller, older and biger then Roxto. You looked at your father seeing that he is uncomfortable about the situacion, so you decided to speak "Toruk Makto was a gread leader. All navi peaple know his story. But we Metkayina are not at war. We cannot let you bring the war here."you told Jakesully getting frastueted, you dont want youre peaple to die or get hurt just bc of them, you dont want war.

"My son Aonung, my daughter Tsireya will show your children what to do." father said. Aonung wasnt very pleased with this "Father why-""It is decited. And my oldest daughter will teach you Jakesully and Neytiri." father countinude, i wasnt pleased eather, annoyed to say, that i had to teach them. It is easy to teach babies, kids they learn faster, but with adults it will be harder, but you did not say anything it is your father desision and you must listen.

"Come me and my sister Tsireya will show you our village." you said gesturing to Tsireya to folow you witch she happely did.

"This is for you.Your new home." you said standing infront of ther merui. "Yeah, this works. This is great.Its nice right." Jakesully responded.

As me and Tsireya went back to our merui i was stopped by non other then my sunshine Roxto.

"Ma Y/n i missed you." said Roxto hugging me from behind. "Sunshine." i responded tiredly, i just wanted to sleep now. I turned around and kissed his head.

He blushed and giggled "You seem frastureted, come walk with me. Maybe it will clear your mind" said Roxto pulling me with him. I grunted, i am tired, but seeing how happy Roxto is now i just let him drag me where ever he wants.

We stoped somewhere sitted down and just sat next to eachother, his hean on my shoulder and my arm around his weist. "I have something for you." said Roxto as he pulled out a beautiful makeshift bracelet. " I made it my self." countinude Roxto as he blushed and put the braclet around my wrist. I looked at the gift, it had pearls and pretty shels it was a very beautiful gift.

I smiled and looked down at Roxto pulling his face close to mine and kissed him. It was a passionet kiss, full of love. Then i pulled awey and started kissing his neck going down to his colorbone leaving heckeys, marking him mine.

The mysterious Gorosei powers made me think of Demonio Fleur and Papa Nico's identity, so what if he was not a member of a D clan, but a celestial dragon instead? A former Holy Knight, to be specific 👀, bc I think all of them have the same powers. I think his dream was to learn the meaning of Will of D to find out why they're called natural enemies of the gods, so he sailed to Ohara, then fell in love with Olvia, they got married (he took her surname to protect his indentify) and had Robin. I mentioned Demonio, bc it looks more like a zoan power rather than paramecia one (yes, I know she doesn't have cloud around her neck) and it could be a hint towards Papa Nico's indentity, not to mention her ephitet "Devil Child" would gain an interesting meaning 👀.

Now onto the Lawbin part💛💜 Robin being a celestial dragon would add another parallel in their lives: On one hand there is Cora, a former celestial dragon, saving Law's life, a member of a D clan and on the other is Saul, a D, saving Robin's life, a child of a hight rank celestial dragon. Their romance would be like Romeo&Juliet 😄 What do you think?

Omg that's such an interesting theory! And...it makes sense!! First of all, Robin had eaten DF in such a young age at or before 8 years old and we didn't know how she ate it. By reading her flashback, it seems like she's well known with her DF power so she must had it for a while. And I did some googling about how Robin's awakening DF works and not a lot of people can explained properly and you're right that might be a hint that she's a descendant of celestial dragon like Shanks. And it would be extra meaningful that a half celestial dragon would be the one who reveal the void century that they spent so much effort to try to hide it.

The only thing I concern is other half celestial dragons like Bonney or even full celestial dragon like Shanks (it's almost confirmed that he's descendant of the Holy Knight), Doflamingo or Corazon haven't shown this ability (turning into devil like). And it's almost impossible that Robin is one of the descendant of Gorosei. But I'm also guessing Oda is hiding something about Robin's power and her background. Because She's fainting a lot recently (both in Wano and Egghead, which rarely happens before) and her real last name. It might be something special about her devil fruit like Luffy's devil fruit.

Also, Astarion in a jumper! WITH THE CAT! So far away from scary Ascended, it melts my heart. And him being embarrassed over bargaining in on Rose taking a bath, so worried and willing to face her in case she got hurt again... Aww, is the only thing I can say.

Not me waiting for the epilogue chapter to be Rose and Astarion on a double date with the Dekarios family. And I'm never letting my cat be alone in proximity to Gale. Nope. I had a lot of visions for what this aftercare portion of the fic looks like, to be honest, but mostly it's just Astarion trying to rebuild his personality from the ground up and then trying to do it as quickly as possible so he can land himself a baddie lmfao. I don't know how well I'll pull it off, bc there's a lot of big things to unpack there that also, I don't think, make for a particularly interesting reading experience, so a lot of it happens off-screen. But for right now, I'm just grappling with an Astarion who feels bit weird about flirting, meanwhile Rosalie is like "he's not flirting with me? :( maybe he doesn't... like me :("

so this is a post season 2 story, where Din has just lost his baby and is a Sad Panda and doesn't really have much to do with himself but HEY look at that shiny lightsaber, it comes with some Free Real Estate and also a monarchy

so Mandalore gets retaken (details details, politics, blah blah) and Din ofc Does Not Want to be ruler, so he sets up a council. and Mandalore is. well Mandalore is Fucked, and while they have the manpower (clans coming back! Mandalor the Reunifer! give it to me) they don't have the resources to rebuild. 

blah blah blah, more politics, they realize they need to make alliances in exchange for goods and services, so they hit up the new republic. except Mandalore doesn't really have anything worth trading? maybe hyperspace lanes, patrols, future prospects, idk i failed economics in high school. but basically they got nothin.

but the senate (?? did they make another senate? it sounds like a bad idea so probably) is drooling to get their hands on Mandalore ('hey how about trading us beskar--' 'no and also fuck you') even if it might take a while to get a return on their investment. however. mandalorians are fucking SCARY. so how do you keep an entire people under your thumb?

you take their leader as a hostage, of course!

(no it's not a HOSTAGE, of course not, it's an alliance through marriage, and ofc the mandalor should stay on coruscant to protect mandalore's interests, right?)

venti has also never once left mondstadt with a crisis that he felt like his people couldn't handle alone. the lawrence clan? yeah, he was asleep, but i don't think venti can control how long his naps are SJAKHAKGJG either way, he came to save his people. the cataclysm? i think he did all he could. idk i don't remember that part of the lore very well, i think he was really busy with durin & dvalin. the people of mondstadt still survived for the most part (rip signora's lover 🙏). dvalin's corruption? venti was right there, soothing him.

also, isn't it interesting how mondstadt is so peaceful? you don't see an ancient god like osial assaulting his people. i think that's interesting. the calm before the storm? oh yes, mond is almost CERTAINLY the calm before the storm, but i also think it's so calm because venti is powerful.

wei wuxian and lan wangji's relationship as a foil to song lan and xiao xingchen's relationship with a little jiang cheng and wei wuxian bc xiao xingchen went to baoshan sanren and begged her to take his eyes and give them to song lan where wei wuxian begs wen qing to fake being baoshan sanren and to take his golden core and give it jiang cheng

like i understand why the writers thought wen qing and wei wuxian would be a good pair. and yes, ofc, erasing his relationship with lan wangji was a bad decision and i'm glad the fandom corrected them. but wen qing, despite her protestations, performing that surgery on wei wuxian and jiang cheng? even after learning wei wuxian would have to be awake the entire time??? she's so crazy?? they're both so crazy hello???

from that, taking all the presumed scenes between wei wuxian and wen qing and just giving them to jiang cheng instead? jiang cheng crushes on wei wuxian. then the jiang clan is wiped out by the wen clan, and jiang cheng hates her. but then he restores lotus pier and the jiang clan and he wants to save her from the collective persecution from the other clans but no longer can if he doesn't want the jiang clan wiped out again

what about jiang cheng's decision to work with lan wangji to find wei wuxian after he's thrown in the burial mounds? lan wangji who he partially blames for the massacre of the jiang clan bc wei wuxian decided to stand up for and protect lan wangji (and jin zixuan). like??? what's going through his mind? how did he come to that decision? i know i've seen a post floating around talking about how jiang cheng and lan wanji have known each other longer than either of them have known wei wuxian and that just. drives me insane!!!

and i'm not strictly reducing this to shipping either. like these relationships can be romantic/sexual or not! (though i will make it clear some of these ships are not for me, esp if it veers into incest or incest-adjacent vibes; i'm not into that. but i'm also not the fanfic or moral police, so like this is not me trying to stop anyone or me making a moral judgement)

so my soul eater si is a witch bc how could i resist the star crossed lovers tension of it all, their name is Acherontia Styx and they're a death's head moth (heavy handed symbolism? yes incredibly). their magic is very based in moths being omens of the future, and so their main role pretty much all their life as been as an oracle, first to the witch order and then to death

it's a bit handwavy bc who needs to remember details. but their family (the death's head clan? i don't actually know how witch families work in soul eater they never expanded on that) has been held in high esteem as oracles and advisors for other witches, thanks to their powers of foresight, and styx was groomed to be the heir of this legacy from the moment they were born. they lived a very strict and very sheltered life from a young age, but when they were roughly a teenager probably not long before their aging started to slow, they somehow fell into the hands of lord death

again handwaving bc i haven't nailed down the details of how or why that happened yet. i'm thinking along the lines of styx being especially proficient at their divination magic and giving the witch order an edge in the war against death, which he was Not fucking happy about and was trying to find a way to take down their advisors. i imagine they'd be well protected usually, not even counting their divination magic, so most likely styx saw a chance to escape their gilded cage in the witch dimension and took it

unfortunately it was out of the frying pan and into the fire for them, or out of the cage and into the dungeon, in this case. whether or not they surrendered willingly didn't particularly matter to death, a witch was never to be trusted. but he did see the obvious potential in their foresight magic, so he took styx in and promised not to, well, kill them, in exchange for them to become his oracle

digging into their powers more, i see their magic actually working a couple different ways; their main powers focus more on what is more or less "scouting" magic, i think is the best way to put it. they don't have perfect omniscience, of course, but i'm thinking it works sort of like...they use the moon as a focal point and as a "mirror," and can see anything the moon can see. does this make sense

the other kind of magic they can do is the real divination magic. the spell is called "Thousand Eye Wings" and is basically a form of very advanced calculation magic. you ever hear about laplace's demon? it's like that. they take the information they learn from their moon scrying and calculate a future outcome. this kind of magic is very, very taxing, as you can imagine, so it's performed far less often and only in important situations

and yeah!! Styx becomes death's oracle (taps the death's head moth name again. heavy handed.) and is sort of kept as a secret advisor for him, both bc he didn't want them to be stolen back by the witches, and bc working with a witch might not go over so well with the meisters. and that's how they pass a couple hundred years: locked in a dungeon, known only by death and his closest allies, brought out for spells that would end with other witches being killed. Not a great time!

as for my boys :3c spirit of course knows abt them as a deathscythe, and i think stein learned about them himself before death actually told him bc of his advanced ability to read souls (i imagine death uses wards of some kind to keep styx hidden while still able to use their magic). even then they didn't really talk to them much, until the revival of the kishin sort of kicked the need for an advisor into overdrive

this also resulted in them being revealed to some of the shibusen students, namely the main kids, partially bc they could benefit from their help and partially bc maka and kid were both able to pick up on their witch soul

If you know him well a tell that he has is he will make a point to NOT fidget with his glasses because he feels like that WOULD be a tell but. He always fidgets with his glasses so it is actually notable when he doesn’t for an extended period of time. He also def does the thing where his eyes look up while he is thinking of the lie. -

🌙 MOON - what is your oc's greatest wish? how far are they willing to go for it? Mark wants a lot of things right now. His greatest wish though… hmm. IDK I’m indecisive. Have a bunch: -To be free of Julius -To make Sampson happy - which means he has to let him go. -To be able to let Sampson go - he is kind of worried how he’s gonna react when he actually gets to that point. He’s trying not to think about it. -Someone, just one person, to both know him very deeply and love him deeply. Someone who also believes he is good, and someone he believes is good as well. He does not want to stop caring.

He’s willing to go quite far because they are all interrelated and, the only things he has to lose are the hope for those wishes. So, so long as it won’t ruin one of the above, he would do a lot and risk a lot. He has a lot of resolve and will certainly push himself beyond his limits. -

🙊 SPEAK-NO-EVIL - what is something your oc will refuse to stay quiet about? Uhm. He’s quite willing to stay quiet for his own safety buuuuuuut probably someone wantonly attempting to kill innocent humans he could not stand for, he would HAVE to try to do something to stop it, and also his hatred of Sabbat - he would not accept someone saying the Sabbat aren’t so bad. Which sucks, but that was his experience.

Oh also he cannot accept Julius slander at this time. He will argue about it. Yes he’s trying to kill Julius. Look. Blood bonds make things complicated. -

Other than being informed of stuff that would mean he’s fucked (‘Julius knows you want to kill him” for example), it would be someone he cares about and trusts telling him that Sampson was right, he’s just pretending to care and there isn’t hope for him, that he’s not capable of really loving anyone anymore. :( He’s holding on to hope of true love, ok??? -

All of the above and more. Mark has become kind of arrogant - his sire makes him close to untouchable politically, and he’s also just arrogant due to his Beast’s influence + Julius’s influence (Julius’s fatal flaw is his arrogance). And he is also desperate. Teehee. -

I think i had actually answered this one before but I can’t be bothered to find it and my answer wasn’t that good… because it’s still not good. I DONT KNOW. Mark’s situation is so tough and I’m doing my best to RP him accurately while making the best decisions for survival. I think I would tell him that he’s gotta keep his hunger managed, dammit, do NOT let yourself get hungry or it’s going to go really bad. I would also give him the advice that he should be really, really careful about the nosferatu on his territory cause while he’s being careful already i OOC know it is even more dangerous than he realizes. Otherwise. IDK. -

💔 BROKEN HEART - what could their partner do that would absolutely break their heart? HEEEEEEEEHEEEEEEEEEEEEEE Yeas. this is a funn question. Okay. So Mark is gonna have a lot of baggage that his next boyfriend would have to navigate. Other than something like I wrote above about the worst thing he could hear from someone, which would of course break his heart… a partner saying that he took advantage of Mark opening up would break his heart too - sharing his secrets with someone else for gain. Or really just sharing things about Mark that he keeps private without his consent would really hurt his trust due to what he’s been through.
