This whole backlash against printing fics irks the fuck out of me, and I got some shit to say about it. Mostly "Fuck You" but here's some nuance:

On the surface, I understand where the naysayers are coming from. It's a legitimate fear that making a profit from fanworks will bring down the C&D Hammer on fandom. I get that. Do not put on the One Ring, or you'll risk the Eye of Sauron.

But here's the thing. Fuck capitalism. Fuck digital only. We're living in the digital dark ages, and 100 years from now huge swathes of our history, fact and fiction, will be lost to our descendants because there will be no physical copies of our lives for them to find in old libraries and boxes in the attic, etc.

Creators deserve physical copies of their creations, and so do the other people in the world who love them.

I don't want to profit from letting people print my fics. That's why I use Lulu, since they have an option to set zero profit and make the links hidden so only fans in the know can get a copy. Other printing sites I've looked at in the past don't have those options. In fact, the first time I ever even thought about printing one of my stories was when I won NaNo for the first time and one of the prizes was a coupon for 3 free printings of your story. HELL YEAH, that's a copy for me, a copy for my beta, and a copy for the artist who made the cover for me. Perfect! But I ended up not using that coupon, because the site required I set a profit margin, and did not have an option to make it private. Ummm, no thanks. Not worth the risk. And even though the profit margin could be set as low as ten cents, I did not want to make ANY money from my fic, because I know that would be breaking Fair Use rules. I found Lulu instead, and decided to let other people get copies too, because I'm nice. And if I don't, it's not like I can stop them from doing it themselves, no matter how much I'd rather they not do that.

But that's not good enough for the Reporting Trolls. Their argument is that it's not possible for it to be completely profit free, since Lulu makes a profit on the printing costs and the shipping carriers make a profit off the shipping costs. Someone is making a profit, and that's unacceptable, even if that someone is not Me, The Person Who Made The Printing and Shipping Worth Paying For.

I would like anyone who thinks that to delete your accounts where you read fanfiction. AO3, Wattpad, FFNet, LJ, Dreamwidth, hell even Tumblr for the short ficlet stuff that only gets posted here. Because even if the website it self isn't profiting, (AO3 for example), the companies that sold them their server hardware made a profit. Since utilities are privatized, the electric company that runs those servers are making a profit. IF YOU PRINT IT ON YOUR PRINTER AND PUT IT IN A 3 RING BINDER, the paper, printer, and ink manufacturers made a profit from your dinky little print out. The companies that build all the parts for your computer or your smartphone made a profit on your portal to the internet, who profits from your monthly subscription, just like your electric company profits from the power it takes to run your pc or charge your phone battery. IT'S A SLIPPERY FUCKING SLOPE, AND YOU NEED TO LEARN WHEN TO BACK AWAY FROM THE LEDGE.

We live in a Capitalist Hellscape, and if a company could figure out how to charge you to breathe and for every single beat of your heart, they'd fucking do it. So get off your goddamn high horses with this "wELL SoMEonE iS makINg PrOFit" bullshit. Or if you truly believe that, shut off every account you own, turn off your utilities, and go live in the woods and make up your own goddamn stories, which you can only share orally to the local wildlife. They give kudos by biting you and giving you rabies.

(not to mention; these assholes don't go after fanartists who are ABSOLUTELY making a profit off their work. but noooo, Flirty can't format a fic for print and allow other people to pay for the printing service and shipping, while never seeing a penny of that herself, despite all of the GODDAMN WORK I HAVE PUT INTO IT, WRITING IT IN THE FIRST PLACE INCLUDED FUCK YOU VERY MUCH. fuckyoufuckyoufuckyoufuckyoufucky--)

They didn't ask which media property was the most homophobic, they asked which ship. Most of these fuckers aren't even in the source media; they're solely ships created by and for queer fans.

Shockingly, when a bunch of queers get together to talk about queering their favourite media, homophobia is a secondary emergent property, not a main goal.

Meanwhile, and if you were not an out and proud queer when Brokeback Mountain arrived on the scene in 2005, you may have missed it, so trust me on this.

Brokeback Mountain was well loved by queer people. We adored it. It was intimate, and heart wrenching, and beautiful.

It was also hypnotic fucking candy to bigots.

This movie highlighted an "acceptable" kind of queer in a way that appealed greatly to the most vicious bastards you've ever met. The kind of queer willing to fucking die as punishment for the sin of being gay. Who die prettily, for the enjoyment of the COGAP audience.

That movie inspired hate crimes the likes of which your Fandom-centric ass cannot conceive of.

Whether it was open homophobia coming to beat the shit out of you so you'd die good and proper like those twinks, or the "love the sinner hate the sin" types who stood around saying if you'd just accept your beatings maybe you'd get better?

I have never experienced homophobia on that level from the other ships. And it was EVERYWHERE.

You can avoid talking about BBC Sherlock by just fucking going to work where people who don't watch it are.

You could not escape the overwhelming crush of straight people abhorred by your refusal to die prettily for their pleasure. It was on news. It was on every TV show. It was at work, at school, at the grocery store. You would hear about it on the radio as you walked to the fucking gas pump.

And again and again, it was all homophobes bemoaning what a beautiful tragedy it was and how this is proof that anyone who chooses to be gay is destined to die horribly and go to Christian Hell forever.

THAT is what the Brokeback Mountain ship represents to me.

Now, that's not the fault of the movie, nor the story before it, nor the characters, the actors, the writing, or any of that.

But the amount of homophobic violence that ship inspired is hard for me to wrap my head around and I was THERE.

So yeah, fuckers, I voted for the one that I have physical scars from.

1. black sails. OBVIOUSLY. it's got everything. drama, intrigue, ocean gays, lying little wet rat twinks, anti-colonialist uprisings, caribbean history, grimy period-appropriate costumes, heartbreak, monologues, toby "saturday chillin don't fuckin @ me i'm chillin" schmitz calling himself daddy. everybody slays absolute cunt. it is THEEEE most perfect show ever created.

2. parks and recreation. rewatching p&r is an interesting experience because it was such a product of obama-era liberal america and the optimism just oozes out of every scene. also we don't like crisp ratt anymore. but it's also so genuinely funny and heartfelt and comforting! this show had a massive impact on my sense of humor, as well as i think framed failure in such a positive light: every character failed drastically at something over the course of the show, but through caring for each other were able to pick themselves back up and never let their shortcomings define them. i first watched it at a point in my life where i really needed that, so it has always stuck with me.

3. leverage. my comfort show to turn to when living in a post-capitalist hellscape that continues to reward billionaires for their moral bankruptcy while shitting on everybody else gets too depressing (so… like every day). is it campy and unrealistic? yes. do i care? no. sometimes you need escapism via direct action, heist hijinks, and extreme displays of bisexuality. also aldis hodge is one of the most beautiful human beings on planet earth.

4. supernatural. yeah yeah it's the hehe destiel meme show. but it was also tons of fun to watch every week, the worldbuilding started out fantastic (and then got progressively more and more insane), i think it's really the epitome of "really cool ideas with mostly lackluster execution". the bloody mary episode remains one of my favorite episodes of tv ever, and the fandom drama just keeps giving! i also met some of my dearest friends through the fandom, so maybe the real destiel love memes were the friends we made along the way.

5. twin peaks. the only show that made me so insane i went and got a tattoo of it. impeccable vibes, the experience of watching s3 and then memeing about it on reddit with everyone else who were all equally confused is an experience that will never be replicated.

6. love island uk. listen. fucking listen. i don't want this show to be listed here any more than any of you do, i'm sure. absolute bottom of the barrel brain rot that consumes my life and brings my workday to a grinding halt (thank you timezones) for the 2 months that each season is running. i absolutely have nothing good to say about love island uk other than it's sometimes really funny, usually unintentionally. but iain stirling's voice and those stupid neon pillows/beanbags and atrocious cursive font and catchphrases have wormed their way into my brain and nothing short of a complete lobotomy can remove it.

7. how to get away with murder. this wouldn't even be on here if saff and i didn't go on an insane binge of all six seasons last fall. but since we did… here we are. michaela pratt is an icon and has never done anything wrong ever in her life and i will die on this hill.

8. cunk on earth. this is probably recency bias speaking but oh my god i adore this show. it is exactly my brand of humor and i have so much respect for all the experts and miss diane morgan herself for making it through those interviews without breaking, because i would be fighting for my fucking life. this is the show that i will henceforth be recommending like a madwoman to all my friends.

I just made a few realizations I think more people both here and on the Blue Bird Hellscape App should've had by now.

1. The mcyt community is composed by a lot of different content creators -> every cc reaches their own audience -> different audiences = different opinions = different points of view on the same matter

This means internal issues and debates will be generated and dealt differently by the audience according to the cc involved. Which is human and to be expected. However, in light of this, it should not be accepted for different audiences to hate eachother, send dthreats and harass eachother into leaving the platforms entirely because of how they feel about the cc they enjoy more.

2. There will always be a weird/creepy side to every single Internet community to ever exist and there's shit you can do about it except stay away from it.

This one is more self-explanatory. Name a community on the Internet that doesn't have a history of weird phases and weirder types of fans. I know you can't do it because there isn't. It is, however, pretty normal for big fandoms to be better known for those things. The key is to trust the point of view of fans with better judgement or just be neutral to it altogether. Or, y'know, use common sense. It's a real thing.

3. Drama feeds on fear and confusion. Either inform yourself from reliable sources or live in ignorant bliss and keep doing what you're doing.

Ever heard of the phrase "The only winning move is not to play"? Yeah, WarGames, I know. The easiest way you can deal with drama allegations that dwell into fields you cannot handle from your screen (ex. legal matters, which means the "drama" is not drama but A LITERAL CRIME) is to not ride the panic wave at all. If it is for your own wellbeing, take some time off the community altogether! And anyone who condemns people from doing so is a moron.

I mean. Yeah. But also? You, as the artist, making free content as fanwork, and not as a product, that is ALSO fandom interaction. The internet has become a capitalistic hellscape, yeah, but we people still exist. Social media has been carved into a consumer culture, but that doesn't mean you, as the fan, OR the content creator have to turn into a consumer either.

Just be you, algorithms can never change that. Be okay with the reblogs and interactions only coming from your friends and family. That's what was intended from the get go. If something blows up, it blows up, don't turn yourself and what you love into a commodity.

Ofc, exclusions being if you're an artist that is relying on fanwork bringing in cash, I mean, I get that. I really do. And the way fandoms work these days and the sites we host on work these days are SUPER brutal. My heart goes out to artists trying to make a living on this. And 100%, this is still saying, please, for the love of god, if you like content, at a minimum give the creator a reblog or even just a "<3" in their comments. It makes it less discouraging.

Fandom is so different now and it’s becoming un-fun with how quickly shit moves.

I just want to enjoy things. I don’t want to have to play a game of Artist-Race that seems to be afoot lately.

Ya’ll eat up fandoms, leave artists and writers bone dry and then move on so fucking quickly then fucking wonder where all the Good Fandom Stuff is.

This made me think about the pressure and hype around hs4. Like his win was controversial but not as controversial as I imagined. Outside reddit and stan twitter and fandom spaces everyone was like whatever and makes sense. He was everywhere in this era and even news articles were celebrating his win rather than dragging him. But on the other hand fan spaces were a mess. Everyone from beehive to bunnies(?or Bad bunny fans)were calling him basic white man with basic music and were saying how he was the last person who deserved it. So I can see the hype of Grammy winner harry styles and pressure of guy who stole beyonce's award. Gp will be checking out his album with expectations while fandom people will try their best to find flaws or look for something to drag him

reddit and stan twitter and the clock app, as i said to my other sweet anon about EP earlier, are hellscapes and angry echo chambers and not to be trusted! there was nothing to drag except for people intentionally misconstruing what he said and drawing the worst possible conclusions to be bullies (and even if you disagree with the win, how is that his fault? it's the academy's voters who decide, and that's how they voted). it's just such a pointless argument. but yeah, the gp, who are totally unaware of chronically online stan wars (i wish that was us) does not care and only think of AIW as the hit single that it is. the gp also cares FAR less about the grammys and awards in general than stans think they do. like, i unabashedly love awards season when i have someone to support because i like seeing my little pookies who bring me joy winning silly little statues acknowledging their art and efforts and work, it makes me smile, but it's not the bastion of Everything Ever that some circles act like it is. (1/2) You guys have renewed some of the hope I had lost in storytelling and people taking stories and characters like this seriously (thanks Marvel, Disney). The more time that passes and the more I hear people praising the Show in one breath and either ignoring or dismissing or sneering at Loki's characterization in Thor 1/Avengers/Thor 2 in the next breath, I can't help but feel that the Loki we got in those three films was a happy accident almost. Because it's obvious that outside of our

(2/3) outside of our (apparently) small corner of the fandom nobody actually cares about him or what he went through or that characterization, and it's disheartening. It just feels, every time I am reminded of the absolute retcon Loki's character went through and people just going along with it and the assholes who have shown just blatant disrespect and maliciousness towards him and his fandom get rewarded, (3/3) it feels like the universe is saying, "This thing that you have become so deeply emotionally invested in, and that you love, and you connect with on a fundamental level, this thing that has given you comfort and has been a source of strength and identity for years, yeah this thing is actually garbage and if you like it then you're wrong." Thank you so much for the support, sorry that it took us this long to answer, and by the gods do we all feel you. All I can really say, though is this: welcome to the hellscape that is late-stage capitalism.

There are a thousand tumblr posts that talk about this in detail and in multiple different contexts, but it probably cannot be illustrated any more poignantly than with the Loki Series: what we're getting in the name of movies/shows aren't stories, but content, and shitty content at that. Disney and the MCU simply do not care about character arcs or narratives - the sole motive that keeps them churning out project after soulless project is how much money they can squeeze out of each. And since it's the MCU - the most popular film franchise out there, and owned by Disney on top - they can and do pay critics to praise their trash relentlessly, and even if they didn't, there's always going to be far too many people blindly willing to eat up whatever garbage they produce.

They knew how massive and dedicated Loki's fanbase is, they knew exactly how willing far too many fans were to accept even the barest scraps of Loki content, and they knew exactly what to do to keep us willing to watch it - the sheer amount of manipulation that occurred in the trailers and the interviews is frankly insane, and most certainly very, very deliberate. Moreover, Loki is a queer, heavily-other coded, abused character whose most dedicated fanbase consists of women, queer people, neurodivergent people, and other minority groups - it is not a new phenomenon that showrunners actively go out of their way to sabotage characters whose fanbases don't consist primarily of NT cishet men, and are we really surprised the megacorporation still funding Florida's Don't Say Gay bill might torture, dehumanize, and humiliate a queer character on his own show?

In retrospect, it's ridiculous that so many of us - me included, I will admit - actually hoped that the MCU of all possible franchises might give us a decent show about a queer, traumatized, othered victim of abuse who's always represented deviance and rebellion against the status quo. Nobody could have expected the Larry Show to be this nightmarish, but a decent Loki Series... realistically wasn't going to happen in the hellscape that was the year of our lord 2021, not one made by Disney.

Of course, this isn't nearly limited to Disney - Amazon's recent Rings of Power series immediately comes to mind. The Peter Jackson movies had their flaws, but the LOTR fandom almost unanimously loves them because it's evident how much care was poured into the project. The Amazon series, though? HAH.

So while the universe isn't telling us anything, Disney - and Amazon and Netflix and every other corporation you can think of, really - and their bootlickers most certainly are. "Oh, so you want characters and narratives that represent and resonate with you? You want arcs that are satisfying and meaningful? You're dissatisfied with consuming and paying for our garbage content and actually want something that's fulfilling and impactful and made out of any motive beyond relentless profit? Hah, lol no."

Does that mean that they're right?

Hell no. What we all desire and deserve are not products but stories - ones where character arcs and themes actually matter, ones with messages and characters that truly resonate with us, ones crafted and told with love - because stories have connected us all since way before the dawn of human civilization, because stories are inherently a part of humanity, and because capitalism has no right to destroy that, especially not the story of the god of them.

This project is, and always will be, a gigantic fuck you to them all.

god 911blr and twt has been such a hellscape lately that i just saw "evil witch" and sighed out loud thinking this was lucy hate. but, for the record, i am in fact top 3 taylor haters but i think maybe we should avoid calling her an evil witch. there has been SO much misogyny in the fandom lately and in like. the world at large these past couple of weeks that i'm like on high alert. i'm sure you didn't mean anything by it but yeah!

So I'm kinda back and better than ever. It's been about 3 years since I've frequented these waters and I'm a whole ass new person now, so yeah. Old shit might not be relevant to my mentality/interests anymore. Went through some old posts and kept most of them, but i do realize that a lot of that shit was angsty and depressing.

I'm actually really fucking happy now! Had a kick in the ass to my health last spring and I've been working on bettering myself ever since. I lost 40lbs and got back to my college weight, i work out every day and haven't looked and felt this good in years (i made my gains, and I'll be vain about it if I want to lol), I'm cooking more and eating healthier, and ive more or less gotten rid of my anxiety and depression using some naturalist/spiritualist techniques. There's still the existential dread that comes with a capitalist hellscape, but i truly am enjoying my day to day life on a personal level right now. I can look people in the eyes and have meaningful conversations without feeling weird. For the first time it feels normal to live happily, and it's been a long time coming.

I've been on Instagram for a while, you can find some of what I've been up to there under Flamel110. But I've found Instagram to be a bit... bougie lately. Lotta rich folk showing off rich shit on my feed, when I really just want some aesthetic posts, esoteric memes, and garbage fandom trash lol. Flamel110 is also my Steam and Xbox handle as well. I've been getting deeper into Star Wars lately (binging Clone Wars for the first time rn, i love the "war vignette" style of storytelling) and have followed a few new blogs around that so sorry for the spam.

I used to have a Doctor Who url but had stopped posting about dw regularly, but I’d routinely get dw followers. So I was saying to someone that I should change my url because it felt like false advertising, “since my blog is just goats and gangsters now” AND THEN!!!

yeah, but my main is my only personal blog

I like Charlie, and I like purple, and I already had this screenshot edited and lying around. 

fun fact: it’s a reject from this edit. but because he has the bright window behind him, it didn’t take the purple well so I didn’t use it for the edit but wound up making it my icon (I didn’t edit the background to make it white, it’s legit just a brightly lit window) 

7. Why did you choose your header?

I like succulents and the purpleness of it matches the aforementioned Charlie

Thank you for this blog, it's honestly a blessing in this 2021's hellscape to see new people (and great artists) to get into DR/V3 specifically because over time, a lot of old fans/artists have been slowly leaving, which is always sad. Also, (and I'm saying this very affectionately), screw you for making me remember I need to play Drakengard eventually. I hope you have a wonderful day!

also as someone who just (kinda) left another fandom, I've realized a hyperfixation on smth tends to last like....3 years-ish? It makes sense that some old fans have moved on from V3 already ;w; but hey we got almost 5 years of content to look back at, which is always neat!
