Last summer as Harry and Meghan were being slammed by the press literally for every breath they took, came word that they had flown to France on a private jet. They were dubbed hypocrites for taking a private jet after talking about the environment. Harry never told anyone not to fly, and Meghan never spoke about the environment. But they were both excoriated in the press and on social media. Of course, no fake outrage would be complete without fake pundits on various talk shows lambasting Harry and Meghan for the destruction of the environment.

When it was revealed that Sir Elton John had paid for the flight and paid to offset the carbon footprint, the conversation switched to “debunking the myth” of carbon offsets. Harry and Meghan were declared eco-hypocrites, despite the fact that William, in his efforts to outdo Harry, has spoken of the environment as much as Harry, and had even flown by private jet to Davos climate change forum. His attendance seemed nothing but grandstanding, since all he did was interview Sir David Attenborough. An interview which could have been done remotely, since environmental degradation is such a concern for him. This might sound trivial, but underscores the fundamental unfairness of the media’s attitude towards Harry. There is no shortage of perceived “hypocrisy” if one is determined to find it. But I guess it depends on where said hypocrisy needs to be found.

There was also the fact that William and his family had only just returned from their vacation on an exclusive private island, accessible only by private jet. And if that were not enough, we had the Queen’s favorite son flying hither and yon in private jets, in the midst of renewed outcry about his connection to convicted sexual predator Jeffrey Epstein and Prince Andrew’s alleged sexual abuse of a trafficked minor. No private jet outrage there. Instead, when they were not attempting to equate Prince Andrew’s amoral actions to Harry and Meghan flying by private jet, they were ignoring Prince Andrew in favor of berating Harry and Meghan.

Then, just as it seemed the squall was reduced to a drizzle, along came pictures of the Cambridge clan boarding a commercial flight to Balmoral. £73 flight they declared, with pictures of the Cambridge family cosplaying ‘regular’ folks, with father and children carrying their own bags. It was a double whammy! William and Kate were not only heralded as frugal but of course environmentally conscious for flying commercial. That of course ignores the fact that Meghan and Harry’s personal travel is always privately funded and Sir Elton had paid for their trip; you can’t get more frugal than free.

And it was, but wait there’s more. In the fanfare of the tabloids erecting a statue in honor of William the conqueror of duffel bags, came word from a real reporter with the Scotsman – There were two empty jets. The now defunct airline, Flybe had flown two empty planes, 500 hundred miles so they would be sure to have a commercial jet befitting the man waiting for his father and grandmother to pass…on the scepter. If Harry and Meghan’s small private jet was going to destroy the planet, then two empty commercial jets should spell the end of our galaxy. Harry clarified that flying private was for security reasons, which also apply to the rest of the royal family. Remember, this was not long after two men went to prison for plotting to kill Harry, because according to them, he was a “race traitor”, not to talk about the threats to his wife.

Of course, the people who seem to embrace their role as mouthpiece for KP, came out. Fully recovered from directing their fake outrage at Harry and Meghan taking a private jet, they were ready to switch to fake outrage in defense of William and his obvious stunt.

As with the jet stunt, we saw the denials for what they were, “fake”.

And then nearly a year later, this happened. An article about Simon Case of Kensington Palace who is now off to support the non-elected ruler of Britain – Dominic Cummings.

The Spectator’s tweet of the article about his departure proudly proclaimed:

What the tweet should have said was: “It was a stunt.”

And a poorly thought out and executed stunt. By any objective measure, it was a failure. People immediately knew it was a stunt, and treated it with the ridicule it deserved. It did not affect change, except with the people desperate for any excuse to think William and Kate worthy of their privileged position. For those of us who think privilege should be earned not gifted, we saw William as a backstabbing, entitled, duplicitous craven bully. In the middle of a propaganda campaign against his brother and (post-partum) sister-in-law, William decided (or agreed) that it would be an excellent idea to do that, to attempt to embiggen himself.

If, as KP’s press minions originally claimed, the flight had been arranged months in advance, why did Flybe have to scramble( moving empty jets hundreds of miles) at the last minute to position a Flybe-branded plane on a route that was operated by their codeshare partner Loganair (eastern airways) in order to “maximize press coverage for the airline”? Was there a prior expectation that their royal passengers will be pictured on the flight and hence the need to “maximize press coverage”? Had the flights been arranged far in advance as the press mouthpieces insisted it was, the airline could have positioned the planes without costing themselves money by way of 2 EMPTY flights. And why is Camilla Tominey now making special mention of Case’s role in that fiasco? Was he in his role, KP’s reservation specialist? If not normally, why did he take interest in that particular flight?

We do know that the flights arrangements were made on the eve of their departure per the Scotsman. A flight that was obviously positioned to portray William and Kate as “better” and more “responsible” than Harry and Meghan. And why are we now receiving confirmation of what we suspected from the beginning? Is it a coincidence, that revised versions of old rumors (tights-gate, private jet, KP leak) are being trotted out now? Revisions we suspect are closer to, (but still not) the truth. All these revisions still manage to position William and Kate as the victims. Apparently, Kate was justified in claiming to have a temper tantrum because the bride got the final say for her own wedding party; or that the backstabbing of Harry and Meghan via media propaganda was engineered by someone else and William and Kate merely went along? I don’t know why they think either proposition makes them look good.

If Simon Case was the ‘mastermind’ behind the media war waged by the future-future King against his brother and sister-in-law, then Mr. Case is an unfeeling, amoral manipulator. After all it was under his watch that the (pregnant) Duchess of Sussex was subjected to a coordinated campaign of harassment by the British Media. It was under his watch, that Tim Shipman of the times wrote in his famous article, excerpts below.

“This sense of embattlement has been entrenched by William’s decision to reach out to senior figures in the media as he prepares for kingship and by the apparent decision of those same newspapers to side with the palace over Meghan and Harry by peddling the most negative coverage of the duchess’s relationship with her father, Thomas Markle. “Harry sees that as part of the headwinds against him,” a friend said.”

It is Case who was credited with encouraging William to attempt to sideline Harry and his popular wife, which led to rumors of exiling them to Africa.

“…the Duke of Cambridge has been encouraged by his private secretary, Simon Case, who says he believed that a period of separation between the two brothers would help them to define themselves better and also improve relations between them.”

“In some ways it would suit William to get his brother out of the country for a few years and Meghan as far away as possible,” said one friend of the brothers.

Sending the couple to Canada was “mooted, then booted” given that Meghan spent seven years living there and for some it was “too close to the US” and the inevitable tabloid magazine coverage that would ensue. Making Harry governor-general of Australia was discussed and dismissed. The problems were obvious. “The trouble is that you effectively set them up as king and queen of a whole separate country,” according to one source. “And 24-hour media means that Australia is not as far away as it used to be.”

Here we are today, Harry and Meghan have stepped down as working royals, and moved to the United States of America, home to the media capital of the world. The public knew the economy plane trip was a stunt. We knew the leaks were coming from inside the Palace. No one but trolls believed the tights (or is it skirt length?) story. William will be remembered as a twat who on a state visit told the world that the media was hyping up COVID-19, even though at the time, hundreds were dying daily. Yet the apparent architect of the clusterf*ck, Simon Case, is credited with turning William into a statesman(yes) and it was his “success” at KP that lead Britain’s bumbling prime minister to invite him back to No. 10 Downing St.

As it were, the latest Spectator article only seeks to confirm what every rational and logically thinking person suspected was a calculated move by William’s court to hurt is brother. One has to wonder when all these facts became known to Camilla Tominey. Also is she the only reporter who is privy to these facts? Why were some in the royal rota adamant that flight arrangements were made far in advance? Did they question the seeming improbable coincidence(ahem) of the Cambridges and their brood being pictured boarding a domestic flight, whose exact price(£73) they seemed to know even after the fact? Or were they just willing to give William & Kate the benefit of the doubt, which they never extend to Harry and Meghan? So many questions still to be answered. If I were a betting woman, I will bet my last penny that there are more Cases to be unveiled. Stay tuned.

Image, Image, Image............

Thank goodness 2017 is about over. This whole year has been a bunch of false narratives and bullshit. I was talking to some friends earlier, and with all the information we got the last few days, it became clear just exactly what this whole year has been about.

I have a feeling my inbox is going to be filled with hate, from both sides after this one, but it's what I think this whole year has been about. So, I'm going to write it, post it, and hope for the best.

I have had these thought for quite some time, but I wanted to hold off writing about them, until I had a better feeling about it. With the name drop of Camila’s album, I now know my feelings were in the ballpark.

I have had the feeling, from the moment Camila changed her twitter name to just “Camila”, that that was more than likely going to be the real title to her debut solo album. She did that back towards the end of July. When we got the initial album title, I thought, “how dramatic. Not the best title for an album, but it goes well with the drama.”. Then we started hearing, some of the songs she was performing on tour with Bruno, WOULDN’T be on her album. That also got my hackles up.

There really wasn’t much about what was happening and being said, that was making much sense. I knew the rush job of ST from 5H was all for cross-promotion purposes, but I was also trying to rectify the feeling I had, of why the girls, nor the Label, seemed to be giving two shits about the album they had just released. Now, I got my answer.

This whole year has been narrative based, and the continuation of a cycle. I have said before, the Music Industry loves to build people up, tear them down, then build them back up again. That’s what 2017 was. This year was dedicated to rebuilding Camila’s image and destroying the group image.

Before anyone goes off on a tangent about how it’s all about Camila, and fucking over the girls, not so fast. This has been the plan since 2015. They completely destroyed Camila’s image, within the fandom, to get her out. THEY made it your wishful desire that Camila exit the group. Like I said before, “your wish is THEIR command”.

The Labels needed a reason to begin the process of putting the group on “hiatus” or disband them. They used Camila to do it. They always knew Camila was going to be the first to go solo. That was THEIR plan all along. A happy group does not go on hiatus, or disband. THEY made her the scapegoat for the eventual demise of the group. THEY started destroying her image within the fandom, well all along really, but it started in earnest in 2015, and it didn’t stop until the release of that second statement by Fifth Harmony back in December of 2016.

The release of the first group statement, made Camila look selfish, and made the group look hurt, but resilient. Then Camila’s released statement made her look better. She was just trying to be happy. The release of the second group statement, contradicted their first and started making people question what was really happening. Then we got the misinformation campaign, through written articles full of “inside sources” and “people close to the situation”. That’s when some of us figured out, everything we were being told was a heaping pile of bullshit.

We figured out, everyone knew 2016 and 7/27 was going to be Camila’s last with 5H, despite everything THEY were telling us. Everything was running smoothly. Normani was dancing her ass off on DWTS. The girls were supporting her. You know, “happier than they’d ever been.” Then we started noticing, uh oh, for four young Ladies who claim to be happier than they’d ever been, they sure look miserable all the time. Word of all this solo stuff from the girls started getting out, (funny how they could do it, but Camila couldn’t) and we started to notice some “tension” between some of the members. Here we go again!!!!!

We get the released photoshoot from Laucy, that “confirmed” that Laucy was on/off for years, that they weren’t together anymore, rumors of Lauren “cheating” on Lucy with the one and only Ty $, then we started getting Tyren shoved in our damn faces. “Lauren” is all over Social Media liking every damn shady tweet about Camila she can find. Going on political rants that eventually started turning people off. The fandom started turning against her, calling her a “fake feminist”, a “bi-slut”, an "attention whore", and a shit load of other crap I don’t even feel like mentioning.

THEY are tearing her down, just like they did Camila, but no worries, they already know how they are going to build her back up again. They are doing the same thing with Normani, to a lesser extent. THEY have now made it a competition between Lauren and Normani, and the L-stans and N-stans are falling for this shit, hook line and sinker.

They had Normani announce her new solo Management. She has been in the studio working on her solo music. They have Lauren out there doing collabs like it’s going out of style. (which it is) They have Dinah doing her solo collabs as well, and we just found out, Ally is doing a stint in a TV show. But, it’s all good. They're communicating and happy as can be for each other’s solo endeavors. THEY still need to make some money this year, so they also have 5H doing some little side stuff to keep the group in the limelight.

Notice how I worded that. They have Fifth Harmony doing side projects. The last couple months, you wouldn’t even think Fifth Harmony released an album in late August. They have been promoting everything but. The truth is, if you paid attention, they aren’t so much "sabotaging" the group, so much as they are using the group. They are manipulating the fandom, to demand the disbandment of the group.

Let's go back to 2015 for a minute. Like I said before, in my opinion, everything that happened this year was supposed to happen last year. The problem, Camila wasn’t quite ready to go solo, and the girls weren’t ready either. THEY planned to use the success of Worth It and Camila’s duet with Mendes to launch her solo career. THEY planned to use the success of WFH and the 7/27 era to launch Lauren’s solo career. THEY were planning to use DWTS to launch Normani’s solo career, and Dinah and Ally had shit planned as well. It all got pushed a year, because none of the girls were ready.

2015 was a year of lessons for the girls. They all realized, they were being used and manipulated, and they were stuck in crappy contracts from hell. What most of you don’t realize, is Camila leaving the 5H partnership actually opened the door for the girls to renegotiate their contracts.

I said in another post, since Camila was no longer a member of the 5H partnership during the 7/27 era, they had to have negotiated her back into the group. That’s exactly what they did, but it also opened the door for Camila to renegotiate her solo contract and the girls to renegotiate their individual and group contracts. How? Because the percentages changed.

When the girls agreed to become the group Fifth Harmony, they had to form a Partnership, or a legal entity, to funnel the group money through. Everything was split, debt and profit, 20% each. When Camila withdrew from the partnership, they had to renegotiate the numbers with the Label and the Partnership, to be split 25% each. Camila was, and is still responsible for her initial 20% of the debt that was obtained during her stint with the group, and she will still obtain her profit margin that was negotiated for everything her image was attached to during her stay with the group.

So, Camila’s departure from the Partnership opened the door for Dina LaPolt to come in and renegotiate with the Label, the numbers and percentages, obtain ownership of the Trademark, and negotiated the girls’ solo/development deals with the Label that Dan Wootton mentioned in his article.

That’s enough contract talk for now. That shit is to complicated for this post. Anyway, since everything got pushes a year, we ended up here in 2017. Before LA got ousted, he picked up the option for 5H3. They needed an album for cross-promotion purposes. They needed the “competition” for their plan to work properly. The girls insisted on more freedom for 5H3, so they got some writing credits. It was no big deal for Epic, since they were doing 5H3 on a minimal budget anyway. The Label put all their eggs in the Down basket, because they only needed one hit to make everything work. Oops! They were certain, because WFH was such a big hit, that it’s puny baby brother would work just as well. It didn’t. They released Down on June 2, with a video. The fans hated it.

Before that though, Camila released her debut solo single, Crying In the Club. It was a good song, but it was a Sia sample. Camilizers, and music fans in general, didn’t want a Sia sample. Been there, done that! Fans of Camila wanted and expected something different from her. We knew it was a safe Label choice, and it was good, but not good enough.

There was more interest in, the Camila written, I have Questions, that was the prefix in CITC’s music video. Unfortunately, IHQ wasn’t the official single. It was more or less a promo track for drama’s sake. The written statement she released explaining her album process and the circumstances behind IHQ, left us all intrigued, and we couldn’t wait to hear the whole song. We got that a couple days later at the BBMA’s, then the studio version was released the next day. Let the analysis begin!

Now, we were told that her album was titled, The Hurting The Healing The Loving, and that IHQ was basically the beginning premise for the whole album. It would take us on a journey through her healing from the hurting, and end with the loving. Great concept, unfortunately, the whole THTHTL premise was to boast the narrative drama. I’m almost certain, THTHTL was never going to be the title of her debut solo album. We were simply fed that narrative to get the fan base riled up, and the headlines coming.

Before you go off on me, NO, I’m not blaming Camila and calling her a fucking liar. She had no say in this narrative at all. In my opinion, that’s why she kept putting little changes in the story behind IHQ. That was her way of letting us know, not to believe everything we hear. The story behind the song is real. It is her real heartbreak being poured out through her song. Someone did betray her trust. Something did cause her to feel all those feelings. It’s the who we don’t have the answer to. She has been purposely leaving out the who, because she and THEY don’t want us to know exactly what happened and who caused it. What THEY did want, was all the speculation. Specifically, with all the little subtle changes to the story along the way, the fans believed Fifth Harmony was the catalyst for the song, and more specifically, Dinah.

Really? Yep! They had Dinah play her part in it, as well. Once they got the girls in front of an actual camera for questions, they basically had Dinah admit it was her, without actually saying so. You have to love the way everyone always beats around the bush with an answer, instead of just coming out and saying what they mean. Manipulation of speculation at it’s finest. “We do this, have her say that, and the fans will think exactly what we want them to think.” CHECKMATE!

Why do THEY want the fans to think the girls treated Camila horribly behind the scenes? To rebuild, or fix Camila’s image, that THEY purposely fucked up, and to begin the destruction, or the downfall of the group image. Now, there are only a hand full of true Harmonizers left. Everyone else picked their favorites and wants them to go solo, because and I’ll quote “the group is holding them back”.

With the underwhelming performance of Down, THEY had to do something else to promote Fifth Harmony’s new album release. Que Dan Wootton. His August 17 hit piece on the girls did the trick. It lit a fire under the Harmonizers. A couple days after that, they even did a written interview, where they finally came out and wished Camila well and actually had no problem fielding questions about Camila’s departure.

The album was released on August 25. It debuted at #4. Two days later, at the VMA’s, they ejected an effigy of Camila off of their platform, and just like that, back to destroying the group image, and fixing Camila’s. Camila wasn’t even there, but she was talked about more than just about anyone else after the show.

That little stunt made the girls look like petty petulant children, throwing a temper tantrum. It made Camila look like she had every reason in the world to run away from Fifth Harmony as fast as possible. That’s what it was all designed to do. The Ladies of 5H look shady, while Camila is out there wishing her ex band mates the best in every damn interview. The shadiest thing THEY have had Camila do, is unfollow them all on Social media. But, after that stunt, who could blame her, right? That’s how you tear down a group image, and repair the image of the one who actually departed.

Larry Rudolph has made a career at creating, destroying, and rebuilding artist’s images. He has been doing it for a long time. Lauren, Dinah and Ally have Maverick to rebuild their images when this mess is over. Normani has S10 to fix hers. Granted Larry and Maverick have more to fix with Lauren’s than anyone else. They are completely tearing her down and re-branding her. Every day, I see people that used to worship the ground she walked on, saying they don’t even know who she is anymore. They are dismissing her in droves. It’s sad to see. I wish people would realize what is actually happening, and support her through this phase, instead of hating on her.

Anyway, back to the point of this post. Recent events confirmed for me, that this whole year has been about cross promotion, and image control. Fixing Camila’s, destroying the groups, and re-branding Lauren, Dinah, Normani, and Ally, for their upcoming solo ventures.

I’ve pretty much figured, since late July, Camila’s album was going to be self titled. The title was never going to be THTHTL. That was all narrative based. I also figured it was going to get pushed. I don’t think it was ever going to be released in September. That, too was part of the narrative. She kept telling us, people just didn’t listen.

Pretty much every interview, she would tell us she wasn’t ready to release “her baby” to the public yet. That she was going to hold onto it as long as she could. That she was continuously in the studio trying to perfect it. It was easy to see, when September rolled around, we weren't getting the album. Then we started hearing, that she would write all the songs on her album, and that some of the ones we have heard from tour, wouldn't be on the album.

It was easy to tell, when she talked about her album and her first single, she hardly talked about CITC. All the questions and answers were about IHQ. It was planned that way. I don't think CITC was ever going to be on her album. It was a stand alone single, to get something competitive out there, to keep her relevant in the charts. IHQ was released with it, to hype the media, and create drama.

I'm not saying Camila was being fake, because she wasn't. None of the girls are being "fake". They are following the plan that was laid out for them. The Music Industry is cluttered with talent, and if you want to have a lasting career in the Industry, you have to follow the plan that the people who know how the Industry works, sets out for you. Camila told us that herself, when she said, "the Industry is about 10% talent, and 90% hard work." She wasn't saying a talent-less twit can make it in the Industry if they work hard. She was saying, talent can only get you so far in the Industry. If you want to make it, you have to be prepared to work for it.

As I've stated before, The Industry is run on manipulation, timing, and image. Great music is almost an afterthought in the Industry. They don't give a shit if a song is good. They only care if they can take a song and make it sell. I've heard a boat load of crappy songs become number 1 hits. I've seen even more talented artists fall through the cracks, because they couldn't handle the game.

The Music Industry is ruthless. As Lauren, and I have said, the Industry can eat people alive. It can destroy you from the inside out. If you have a strong moral compass, and an even stronger support system, you can make it. You have to surround yourself with people who have your best interest at heart, not their own. People in this fandom bitch and moan about Camila and Normani always having their mothers with them. Their Mothers are there to make sure their daughters stay grounded, and to make sure their daughters don't fall victim to the Industry. I'm happy they are always there with them.

The Industry manipulates their artists, they manipulate their fans, they even manipulate the general public consumer. They can take a song, that should have never made it out of the studio, and turn it into a world wide phenomenon. The internet made that even more possible, and way easier. Throw some cool dance moves to a shit song, and the world will learn every step. Put a song on all the most popular playlists, people will stream the shit out of it. Release a song or album, when there's not a lot of popular competition, get the "media" to hype the hell out of it, the people will eat it up. Throw a rap artist on a pop song, suddenly you have rap/hip hop consumers buying and streaming pop songs, and vice versa. Create an image for your artist that is geared towards what's popular or happening in the world at the moment, and people will fall in love with them. It's all a form of manipulation, and people eat it up.

It's not the artist's plan to manipulate you. Young new artists have no idea what they are actually signing up for, when they sign on the dotted line. They are easily manipulated into signing the next ten years of their lives away, then they are either forced to play the game, or get hit with a lawsuit they will spend years trying to pay off.

That's what happened to Camila, Lauren, Dinah, Normani, and Ally. (and the majority of young artists that come into the business) They had a dream, made the choice to chase that dream, and found themselves smack dab in the middle of a cutthroat business, who's only concern, is how much money they could make them. THEY didn't care that Camila was getting death threats and bullied on social media. They didn't care that Normani was getting bullied by racists on social media. They didn't care that all of the girls got, and are still getting, hate, on social media. It's just all part of the game, and their plan to make the girls as successful as possible to make THEM more money. THEY don't care about the artists mental health, physical health, or well being in general. Just get your ass out there and make me some fucking money.

So, don't place blame on the girls for playing the game, and following the plan that was mapped out for them, from the start. They are simply trying to make it through their initial contracts without getting swallowed up by the Industry.

It will get better for each of them. The truth always has a funny way of coming to light, no matter how hard, or how much money you throw at the lie, to keep the truth hidden, it will come out eventually.

If I'm wrong, about any of the things I express or theorize, I will be the first one to come out and say, my bad. I screwed the pooch on that one. But, my track record has been pretty good so far, so take it for what it's worth.

The Martian Spherules

In 2004, the Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity had already detected curious blueberry-shaped microscopic formations in the martian soil…but a much stranger picture was taken by Opportunity at the end of 2012, depicting bigger spherules in larger numbers.

The Babushka Lady

Babushka Lady is a nickname for an unknown woman present during the 1963 assassination of President John F. Kennedy who might have photographed the events.

She was seen to be holding a camera and was also seen in film accounts of the assassination. Even though the shooting had already taken place and most of her surrounding witnesses took cover, she can be seen still standing with the camera. She never came forward. The police and the FBI did not find her, and the film shot from her position never turned up.

The Hessdalen Lights

The Hessdalen Light is an unexplained light usually seen in the Hessdalen valley in Norway.

In 2007, a group of teachers, students and scientists established a science camp in Norway to study the phenomenon.

On a clear night, Bjorn G. Hauge managed to take this pic using an exposure time of 30 seconds.

The analysis of the spectrum reveals the object to be made of silicium, iron, titanium and scandium.

Pyramid on the Moon

This photo was taken by Apollo 17 near the Geophone Rock, during the last flight to the moon, and it was listed as a “blank” in the Apollo 17 photographic index.

The photo certainly suffers from extreme light exposure and noise issues. But it’s in fact not completely blank, as adjusting the contrast reveals pyramid-like structures.

The Solway Firth Spaceman

May, 1964

On 23 May 1964, Jim Templeton, a firefighter from Carlisle, Cumberland (now part of Cumbria), took three photographs of his five-year-old daughter while on a day trip to Burgh Marsh.

Templeton said the only other people on the marshes that day were a couple of old ladies sitting in a car at the far end of the marsh. In a letter to the Daily Mail in 2002, Templeton stated, “I took three pictures of my daughter Elizabeth in a similar pose – and was shocked when the middle picture came back from Kodak displaying what looks like a spaceman in the background.”

Templeton insists that he did not see the figure until after his photographs were developed, and analysts at Kodak confirmed that the photograph was genuine.

The Hook Island Sea Monster

People nowadays assume that this image is a photoshop job unique to the digital age, whereas in fact it’s a classic, much-reproduced image, widely discussed in the cryptozoological literature, and first appearing in print in March 1965 (together with others). It’s Robert Le Serrec’s photo of a huge, tadpole-like creature encountered in Stonehaven Bay, Hook Island, Queensland.

The Mysterious Hinterkaifeck Murders

The story:

“In Germany, 1922, the murders of six people at the Hinterkaifeck Farmstead shocked the nation. This wasn’t just because of the gruesome nature of the case, but also because the case was so incredibly weird, and it remains unsolved to this day. Over 100 people were interviewed in the murder, but no one was ever arrested. No motive was ever established as to explain the murders.

“The previous maid had left 6 months earlier, saying the home was haunted. The new maid arrived only hours before the murders. It is believed that the perpetrator(s) remained at the farm for several days – someone had fed the cattle, and eaten food in the kitchen: the neighbours had also seen smoke from the chimney during the weekend. This photo depicts one of the victims as he lay in the house barn.

Possible explanation:

NO INCREASED TAXES, FEES FOR NOW - Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley does not see the need “at this time” to present any increase in taxes or fees. She also said she was satisfied with the foreign reserves at almost $2 billion should the country have to deal with a natural disaster this hurricane season. Speaking during the consultation with public sector workers on the Barbados Optional Savings Scheme (BOSS) at the Gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex yesterday, the Prime Minister said she was comfortable with what her administration’s debt restructuring and the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation programme had been able to achieve in the last year. Mottley, however, stressed that as Minister of Finance, she would not want to say it was a certainty no increases in taxes or fees would come in the future. She said that despite the country’s stable financial position, COVID-19 would provide serious challenges. (DN)

IMF APPROVES $280 MILLION FOR BARBADOS – Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced on June 3 that the Executive Board of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved about BDS$280 million in support, and the money should be in Barbados’ account by June 4. This is the fourth IMF disbursement in support of the Extended Fund Facility Programme. A statement from Government said Mottley made this disclosure today while addressing a group of public officers and employees of the state-owned enterprises, at the gymnasium of the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex. Mottley was attending a discussion on the Barbados Optional Saving Scheme (BOSS). The Prime Minister later told the media that the BDS$280 million included BDS$180 million, which would assist the country to get through the situation brought about by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and BDS$98 million to allow for the usual programme disbursement going forward. “This [IMF] Board approval shows that we were on track with our programme . . . and, more importantly, our plans for how we intend to get out of COVID-19 have been accepted by the Fund and hence, that separate support of US$90 million. . . . “We are happy with the fact that the approval by the Board would have confirmed that up until March, we were on target with all of what we said we would do . . . . They are also looking at what we do going forward with COVID-19 and, quite frankly, even though we are very much in an uncertain environment, we have set out a broad framework of measures that we believe are the start, even if not the end, because we don’t know what else COVID-19 has to offer as we go forward,” said Mottley. The Prime Minister said the money from the IMF would give Government a sense of comfort and provide the needed assistance to protect the country going forward. “Even though we are definitely not out of the woods, we are on the right path and we need to stay focused and do what we have to do,” she said. A statement from the IMF said Barbados’ programme implementation is strong, with all performance criteria for end-March met. It noted that “since May 2018, international reserves have increased from a low of US$220 million to more than US$850 million at end-April 2020”. “Barbados continues its strong implementation of the comprehensive Economic Recovery and Transformation (BERT) plan aimed at restoring fiscal and debt sustainability and increasing reserves and growth. The ongoing global coronavirus pandemic poses a major challenge for the economy, which is heavily dependent on tourism, and is expected to have a large impact on the balance of payments and the fiscal accounts,” the statement said. Following the IMF executive board discussion, Tao Zhang, Deputy Managing Director and Acting Chair said: “Barbados continues to make good progress in implementing its comprehensive Economic Recovery and Transformation plan, with all performance criteria for end-March 2020 met. Prospects for continued strong programme performance are good. “The policy response to the global coronavirus pandemic is adequate with a reduced primary surplus target of 1 per cent of GDP for fiscal year 2020/21 to accommodate significant revenue losses and support spending on public health and social protection. The reduction of the primary surplus is financed by additional resources from international financial institutions, including an augmentation of the IMF’s extended facility. “The accommodation in fiscal year 2020/21 will be compensated by higher primary surpluses in the medium term to ensure that the debt target of 60 per cent of GDP in fiscal year 2033/34 is reached. LASHLEY SLAMS QEH BOARD – Listen to Dr Maurice Walrond and don’t chastise him, urges former Government minister Stephen Lashley. He slammed the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s (QEH) board for charging the consultant surgeon for publicly airing his concerns about patient safety after they ignored him, and suggested that instead of such heavy-handed action, to investigate the substance of what Walrond is saying and if a problem exists to quickly fix it. “The QEH should understand that doctors’ response to Covid-19 requires a new paradigm that cannot be constrained by ordinarily useful but currently irrelevant rules. And it’s not only Dr Waldron who feels some things need urgent attention, he is supported, it seems, by 11 fellow surgeons. Will the QEH waste precious time trying to discipline them too?” Lashley rhetorically asked. In its letter to Walrond, the QEH’s board said he had breached the terms and conditions of his employment by making lengthy contributions on Starcom Network’s Down To Brass Tacks radio call-in programmes on May 11 and May 12 programmes. SHOPSMART CLOSED TWO BRANCHES – ShopSmart has closed two of its six locations. Closed are its branches at Cheapside in the City and Wildey, St Michael. Referring to the COVID-19 global pandemic, management sighted the effects of the “unprecedented situation”. The statement reads: “As we try to navigate this new world order and enter unchartered waters of social distancing, we have decided to close our Cheapside and Wildey locations, effective immediately.” The proprietors said they will now focus on their online service which will give customers “new shopping options”. “Over the coming weeks, we will also introduce changes to our systems and a new online platform,” the statement said. The membership based shopping complex has also suspended membership renewal until June 1, 2022, giving members a two year ease. The business said it was reaching out to its membership at this time and declared that “our hearts go out to anyone who has been impacted by the virus directly or indirectly.”ShopSmart’s other four locations at Speighstown, Worthing, Six roads and Holder’s Hill locations remain open. FORMER SCHOOLMATES CONTRITE AT SENTENCING HEARING - Three young people who were found guilty of manslaughter in connection with the unlawful killing of 11-year-old Ian Elroy Gibson, a Princess Margaret Secondary School student, on September 20, 2009, have apologized for their actions. The remorse came today as the sentencing phase of the case of convicted manslayers Shaquille Shamal Khalleel Bradshaw and Doniko Javier Alleyne both of Balls Land, Christ Church and Maria Antoinette Goddard of Parish Land C, Balls Land, Christ Church continued in the No. 2 Supreme Court. The trio, now in their 20s, formally addressed the presiding Justice Randal Worrell. Alleyne said: “I am sorry and I wish to carry on further with my life.” When it was Bradshaw’s turn he stated: “I just wanted to say that I am very sorry that anything happened to Ian on that day. I sorry he wasn’t here to continue his life and what’s not . . . I just want to say I am very sorry.” Goddard meanwhile said: “I just want to say that I am very sorry that Ian died and I would like to be given the opportunity to go on and raise my son.” During the trial the jury heard that the deceased came into contact with a car driven by Gian Holder on Sunbury Road, St Philip on September 18, 2009 after being in an altercation with the three, who also attended the same school. He died from his injuries two days later at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Attorney-at-law Angella Mitchell-Gittens who represented Alleyne and Goddard described the circumstances surrounding the case as “extremely unfortunate” and “truly tragic”. In her remarks to the court she said: “It appears that this situation is so unique in that . . . I would categorise it as children, being children and not realizing that the consequences of their actions can be so tragic and long-lasting. “This is not a case where somebody had a knife or something like that [and] stabbed somebody . . .It’s children at the bus stop skylarking . . . and before you know it all their lives are altered tragically and permanently,” Mitchell-Gittens told the court. The defence attorney pointed out that her clients were 12 years old at the time and “not persons who are able to make the best decisions.” “And the decision that they made that day I am sure will haunt them for the rest of their lives. They were charged, they were convicted, their young lives were altered greatly and even many, many years later they are now adults and it has come back to haunt them. “The trial has brought it back to the fore not only for them but for Ian Gibson’s family who will have to live with this tragedy for the rest of their lives as well.” However, she pointed out that her clients were now “industrious members of society” and despite the charge and subsequent conviction had never found themselves before the law courts on any other charges even though they had been on bail for over 10 years. “The matter for which my clients are convicted is a serious offence that cannot be downplayed but I would ask the court to consider the fact that at the time of the commission of the offence they were children, very young children, 12 years old and incapable of making proper decisions I would say. “The circumstances of this matter are also very important. . . . Children skylarking at a bus stop would never have dreamt that at the end of the day this would have resulted in such horrific consequences,” the lawyer submitted. She further added that they had put their lives on the right path, were gainfully employed and had sought to become productive members of society. “I would ask that they be given the opportunity to continue given their ages and given the fact that they are a low risk of reoffending and the fact that they have not offended in the last ten years [as well as] the fact of their very tender ages at the time of the commission of this offence. “I would ask that the court allow them to continue on the path that they are on . . .” The matter will continue on Monday June 8, when attorney-at-law Arthur Holder will present a character witness on behalf of his client Bradshaw. It is expected that he will also make his sentencing submission before Deputy Director of Public Prosecution Alliston Seale responds. (BT)

LOUD MUSIC CHARGE BEFORE THE COURT - Two people charged in connection with a common law offence were granted $3,000 bail each in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court today. McKerie Keko Humphrey, 25, of September Square, 4th Avenue Hart’s Gap, Christ Church is accused of causing a public nuisance by allowing loud music to emanate from the shop owned Hazel Donna Greenidge on June 2. Meantime, Greenidge, the 47-year-old proprietor from Block 11B Bottom Close, Wildley, St Michael is also accused of causinga public nuisance when she allowed the loud music from her shop on the same date. The two were not required to plead to the separate charges when they appeared before Magistrate Douglas Frederick. They will make their next court appearance on October 7 BT

DREAM COME TRUE FOR CHEMAR - A long-time dream is now a reality for Barbadian fast bowler Chemar Holder. The 22-year-old of Rock Gap, Spooners Hill, St Michael is set to make his senior test debut for the West Indies Cricket team after being included in a 14-man squad to tour England for the anticipated three-match series to be played at biosecure venues in the United Kingdom. It’s the deserving reward for Holder who captured 36 wickets at an average of 18.91 for champions Barbados Pride before the 2019-2020 West Indies Championship ended because of the coronavirus outbreak. ROOT COULD MISS TEST TO BE AT BIRTH - England captain Joe Root has said he would miss the first home Test match against the West Indies in July if it clashes with the birth of his child, but backed vice-captain Ben Stokes to take the reins in his absence. West Indies’ tour of England, which was pushed back by a month due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is set to begin on July 8 in Southampton behind closed doors, subject to government approval. However, Root’s wife Carrie is due to give birth to their second child in early July and the top order batsman said he is in discussions over whether he would be able to leave the on-site hotel and return to the bio-secure venue. “The due date complicates things slightly. In terms of the bubble and the pregnancy, it’s always an evolving thing,” Root told reporters. “It’s being discussed with the medical team and we’re always trying to stay updated with it. HAPPY TO BE GOING HOME – Hundreds of people are finally heading home today. They filled the lines of the British Airways counter at Grantley Adams International Airport this afternoon in preparation for their fligt. They had been aboard the cruise ship Freedom Of The Seas for months, travelling from port to port but unable to disembark due to restrictions imposed to limit spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Paul Zak, whose final stop is Germany, was thankful to Barbados. "We were stranded for months. It was an interesting experience with excellent accommodations but we want to go home and, if it wasn't for Barbados, we couldn't be heading home today to see our families again," he said. It was the most activity the airport had seen in a while with coaches, porters, security personnel and other airport staff all kept busy. Baker Araz and Haluk Kobal said it was "amazing" to be going home and they felt free after spending so much time afloat. They were going through London to Turkey and Tunisia. (DN)

NO NEW VIRAL CASES - The Ministry of Health and Wellness said in a statement five people will leave isolation today after recovering from novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Their departure leaves four people at the Harrison Point, St Lucy facility, since no one tested positive among the 81 tests carried out yesterday. The number of people who have recovered from the viral illness has now increased to 81. A total of 92 people, 49 females and 43 males, were diagnosed since March 16. Of these, seven died. The Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory has now completed 5 580 tests.(BGIS)

Around 2 p.m.:

Heavy and sporadic firefight ensues in Barangay Basak Malutlut, Marawi City between the military and an undetermined number of armed men.

They were later identified as the Maute group, composed of 15 members.

Initial reports say the Maute group ambushed military forces.

But AFP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Restituto Padilla claims the military actually initiated the pursuit operation after Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon, who they learned was in the area.

After the 2 p.m. initial firefight, more firefight follow in many areas in the city.

Around 5 p.m.:

Unofficial reports say the Amai Pakpak Medical Center is occupied by the Maute group, where they've reportedly raised their black flag in place of the Philippine flag.

The group is allegedly holding the entire hospital hostage.

At about the same time, the Western Mindanao Command says government forces have contained majority of the militants in one area.

However, it says some of group's sympathizers conducted diversionary tactics in other locations to divide the attention of the reinforcing AFP personnel.

Past 7 p.m.:

Reports say the Marawi Police Station and the Marawi City Jail are taken over by the Maute group.

8 p.m.:

In an interview with CNN Philippines, AFP Chief Gen. Eduardo Año clarifies the AFP and PNP were actually going after Isnilon Hapilon in Marawi, while the Maute group in the city's outskirts tried to help Hapilon.

He also says they are already in full control of Marawi, adding there are less than 50 Maute members scattered in they city.

Año reports 1 was killed, and 8 soldiers were wounded in the clash.

Capt. Jo-an Petinglay of the Western Mindanao Command warns the public against disinformation circulating on social media.

She says reports of the takeover of a hospital and the burning of the city jail are not true, and that there are only 10 to 15 members of the Maute group in the city, instead of the reported 250 to 300 members.

8:30 p.m.:

In an interview with CNN Philippines, Marawi City Mayor Majul Gandamra calls on the government for reinforcements, as they do not see military and police forces in the immediate vicinity.

He says there are no ongoing gunfights because the military is not even present.

He says the whole city no longer has electricity. He appeals to the Maute group not to enter city hall or any government facilities.

But several eyewitnesses and residents tell CNN Philippines they are still hearing continuous gunfire in the area that evening.

9:40 p.m.:

In an interview with CNN Philippines, ARMM Governor Mujiv Hataman says there was an attempt to wreak havoc in Marawi.

He adds citizens should have relayed information to the authorities.

Hataman also comments on Maute's lack of respect for the upcoming Ramadan.

From 8-10 p.m.:

Several reports show the Dansalan College Marawi is being burned down.

Some netizens are reporting the Maute members have killed teachers in schools and civilians, and targeted cellular towers.

10:30 p.m.:

Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella in a statement says President Rodrigo Duterte has full confidence in the AFP and the PNP's management of the situation.

Vice President Leni Robredo also expresses her confidence to the military in resolving the situation.

In an interview from Russia, National Security Adviser Hermogenes Esperon says the President is aware of the situation in Marawi.

Also, in an interview with CNN Philippines, 1st Infantry Division Spokesperson Lt. Col. Jo-ar Herrera says their troops clashed with more or less 50 Maute members, but the military is already on top of the situation. He says they were no longer seeing ISIS flags.

He adds they are acting on the information that the Maute group has taken over several establishments and that civilians are being killed.

11 p.m.:

AFP Public Affairs Office Chief Marine Col. Edgardo Arevalo in a briefing says the situation in Marawi has stabilized and security forces are in full control of the situation.

Arevalo also says the Marawi City Hall is not occupied as earlier reported merely quoting "sources."

11:20 p.m.:

President Rodrigo Duterte declares Martial Law over Mindanao.

Secretary Abella announces this in a press conference from Moscow.

DFA Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano says President Duterte will be cutting his Russia trip short to come back to the Philippines.

DND Secretary Delfin Lorenzana confirms joint elements of the Army and the Police were trying to serve a warrant of arrest on Isnilon Hapilon when they were fired upon by the group of Hapilon Isnilon.

He also confirms the Maute group had burned several facilities: the St. Mary's Church, the city jail, the Ninoy Aquino School, and the Dansalan College.

He says three government troops were killed, along with one PNP and two Army officers. Twelve were wounded.

The whole of Marawi City experiences power blackout. The National Grid Corporation explains there is a monitored tripping affecting Marawi City caused by a disturbance at the Mindanao State University (MSU) load-end switching station.

It says the transmission line personnel cannot mobilize to inspect and fix the affected facility due to the lockdown in the area.

6 a.m.:

Provincial Social Welfare Officer Hja Bai Yasmira Pangadapun of the DSWD in Marawi says as early as 6 a.m., several residents in Marawi have evacuated the city due to the ongoing crisis.

They were reportedly moving to Cagayan de Oro (in Misamis Oriental, north of Marawi) and Iligan City (in Lanao del Norte, west of Marawi).

Local officials, however, clarify there was no official directive from the city government. They say citizens are voluntarily evacuating due to the tension.

However, Marawi Interior Director Norhanie Marohombsar says the Maute members are blocking roads leading to two designated evacuation centers in the city.

Around 6:30-7 a.m., PH time:

President Rodrigo Duterte, with several members of his delegation flies back to the Philippines from Russia.

In a video posted by Asec. Mocha Uson, Duterte said:

"What makes me happy.. I'm sad, but what makes me happy that I was able to have a last minute.. Hindi last minute but it was almost an hour, a last minute meeting with President Putin and I was able to communicate all the things that I wanted to tell him. Maganda naman ang ano, positive naman ang...

Mga kababayan natin...Do not be too scared. I'm going home, I'm cutting my visit here to be with my countrymen and I will deal with the problem once I arrive. 9 a.m.:

In an interview with CNN Philippines' The Source, Mayor Gandamra denies the city police station and jail were set on fire.

10:15 a.m.

Vice President Leni Robredo, in a press conference in Camp Aguinaldo, said people should support the government in resolving the Marawi crisis.

"Hindi po basta basta ang laban na ito. Ang mga kalaban natin…ang kalaban po natin dito terorismo…Iyong impormasyon galing sa ating mga kababayan ay napakahalaga, para matulungan na maging matagumpay ang police operations," Robredo said.

[Translation: This is not just any fight. Our enemy here is terrorism. The information from the citizens are very important, so they can help in the success of police operations.]

MUA HERE TO STAY

The once influential Maritime Union of Australia has a decreasing membership due to a loss of employment within the seafaring sector.

The dwindling down has led to a merger with the Construction Forestry Mining and Employees Union (CFMEU). The MUA has no longer sole representation of the maritime industry with the new and third operator in Melbourne choosing a third and rival union. This act performed by a former national official of the MUA and now manager of the new terminal operation.

The new terminal unionists enjoy far cheaper fees and better coverage for their dollar and the workforce say. MUA National Secretary Paddy Crumlin and Deputy Warren Smith could not persuade the employees or the company of a better proposal offered by the Australian Maritime Officers Union. The MUA officials have been damaged by poor performance in Victoria over the past decade and several high profile cases have caused hostility amongst members.

The MUA suffered a serious blow in the dispute of 1998 when Union breaker Chris Corrigan received generous concessions on redundancies and guarantees of industrial harmony from John Coombs the National Secretary who not long after retired to a vineyard in close proximity to the industrial mogul.

Paddy Crumlin succeeded, who members for years have been critical of the dictatorial style of leadership and numerous paid positions internationally with the International Transport Federation and Federally with board positions with Maritime Super and others attracting a salary comparable to the current Prime Minister. Other union officials enjoy paid positions without scrutiny of qualifications and members of the union are subject to fees up to three thousand dollars annually. Questionable transactions on funds have also plagued the union for years.

Now there is a proposed merger and for some there is a long debt that needs to be repaid to the construction union. Western Australian Branch Secretary, Christy Cain a former militant unionist that came to power from funds from the CFMEU. A current National MUA official from Perth handed a large sum of money to fund a campaign against the then State Secretary Wally Pritchard who alleges that Cain had assaulted him in company at a local hotel. This resulted with the Wharfies wanting to expel Cain at the time and with Crumlin refusing to expel Cain. Christy would later set up a social media campaign with the funds and was elected. A large portion of his family now enjoys employment through the union.

Cain has always used intimidating tactics and has a relationship with an outlaw motorcycle gang that came to notice in the murder of a former detective and his friend in a car bombing in WA.

Cain’s victory leads to the CFMEU black listed members on building sites finding lucrative employment off shore at the expense of seafarers as the reward after a vicious campaign for the position. Cain then set about to control the National office and now has the significant position of the Presidency of the MUA. Cain’s nemesis returned recently when Pritchard surfaced again, this time for the deputy secretary position rumored to be sponsored by the outgoing Mick Doleman as was a highly qualified Safety professional.

Doleman in the words of the current Deputy Secretary Will Tracey “fell on his sword” the position was made vacant reluctantly and rather than the position going to the current National officials Ian Bray or Warren Smith. It is said that Tracey was provided with damming correspondence that resulted in his resignation.

Tracey leapfrogged into the opportunity which Doleman supporters believe as having “scabbed” his job. Smith not long after challenged unsuccessfully for Tracey’s position and now is seeking favour of Labor left stalwart Anthony Albanese for a safe seat into Federal politics.

Doleman, rather than be blackmailed out of his position negotiated an alternate post with the International Transport Federation for the Oceanic and South Pacific region but tensions remain divisive. Doleman with his years of service in trade unionism is a powerful force and a cunning operator.

Tracey is also no stranger to political skulduggery and had a previous bitter battle with ALP leader Bill Shorten when both were in the Australian Workers Union: a nemesis of the CFMEU.

It is also said that Will Tracey is married to the daughter of CFMEU boss Tony Maher.

Shorted had the Australian Council Trade Union discipline Tracey for his conduct and if the merger of MUA and CFMEU is to increase the power of the Left faction, Shorted will once again need to be victorious. Cain has been unsuccessful in Western Australian political endeavors with MUA official Adrian Evans contesting a then marginal seat, which has become now a Liberal safe seat. Cain also sponsored Chris Brown who was railroaded by the Right faction of Labor and lost the party endorsement.

The huge MUA donation to the ALP was never returned despite Cain’s insistence.

Cain lost further power when his eastern state support base led by recently deposed Victorian Secretary Kevin Bracken was defeated by Joe Italia who endured during the election campaign the misfortune of his motor vehicle tyres being slashed, house vandalized and a series of harassing late night phone calls. A neighbor of Italia’s, was filming the two offenders via a security system.

Bracken, once called a “dill” by then Prime Minister Gillard also orchestrated the deliberate loss of support for the “Qube 2″ and the dismissal of two popular local members. This case is now lodged with the High Court despite pleas from Cain and Tracey not to proceed.

The curious case dubbed locally as the “Qube 2″ of two employees who work for the Spirit of Tasmania at Station Pier has now attracted a prominent film producer’s interest. Executive producer Bert says that now that the case has been lodged in the high court means that there is significant interest as a television production. “Everybody loves a waterfront story. It’s bankable and its popular”. To add further insult the production team had a pre-production sit in and take minutes during the recent Court proceedings in Sydney involving the once close friend of Paddy Crumlin, Buster Russell.

“Buster” says he was offered a job by Crumlin in place of running against Tracey for the number two position in the last election. He had run previously attracting forty eight percent of the vote and confident he would win second time around. Crumlin offered him a position of manager at the ITF seafarers club if he did not contest the election and despite friends advising him against it, he took the job. “Paddy was pleading me to take it, ringing three times a week”, telling me the industry is dead and I need to think about my future”. Within a short time he realised the job was not what was offered and lost his position with the premises now sold. Frustrated he approached the union and a pushing match developed with NSW State Secretary Paul McAleer. No punch was thrown by either man. Buster was then king hit from behind by an official identified as Joe Deakin and after regaining his feet, he staggered outside the Sussex St building and realised what had happened.

A few days later the Officials from the Sydney Branch had him charged with assault and an AVO was served upon Buster.

Buster had sent what the magistrate described as “abusive texts” not threatening as what two of the NSW officials had been claiming. Whilst in the Court both Officials claimed that he possessed a knife hidden up his sleeve.

McAlee under oath and cross examination stated he was acting under instruction from the MUA executive of Crumlin, Cain and Tracey. Cain and Tracey recently were rallying the troops at a Melbourne Terminal and were both told to shove off after they confirmed they acted in this manner. Blue collar workers see this act as “a dog or rat in old speak or Grubs, scum or filth to a younger generation” as told by a veteran wharfie.

Worse still they are being viewed as police informers by the MUA membership which Crumlin has been labeled before, as he is related to high ranking NSW police officer. It is one thing to be identified as a snitch but deliberately giving false statements to ensure the incarceration of a member who posses the union’s dirty secrets is a new low in unionism. “We couldn’t write this stuff” Bert quips and the transcripts have been purchased by the production company. The four Sydney officials, McAlee, Keating, Garrett, and Deakin with the three National officials Crumlin, Cain and Tracey have much to answer.

The past two decades if scrutinized will show the MUA hierarchy in poor light at a time when Unions can least afford the scrutiny and the CFMEU might question the recent Memorandum of Understanding publicized. The union has been going in overdrive in social media but unfortunately “We had a person at the Court and now have purchased the transcripts for the production; it gives us depth for the show which is the primary stage of pre-production” Bert says. Russell through his long association of being within the inner circle of union matters knows all about financial transactions and an audit would be controversial and damaging. The act of having him removed from the election and an attempt at incarceration was devious but that plan has now unraveled. “It is the act of desperate men who need to hold on to power and privilege at any cost but the genie is now out of the bottle and social media has been our weapon with the responding MUA Executive trying desperately to plug the dissent”.

The High Court action, Sydney transcripts and the forthcoming television production will see the end of several reputations and many diehard members will be disillusioned. The Federal Government needs to perform a forensic audit on the finances of the Maritime Union of Australia.

Both parties would recognize the value of such an audit.

If Malcolm Turnbull wants to deflect the recent critics’ from his front bench and all politicians that claim travel expense funds then he will need to act upon the recent manifestations of what can only be described as corruption. Shorted will need to be seen as equally strong and should be in favour to prevent what the Left of his party have planned for him and the future direction of the ALP.

In the wake of the Heydon Royal Commission into Trade Union Corruption it appears the MUA had been well greased and come out unscathed. It certainly makes one wonder about what deals the MUA has with the Government.

After the rorts in the UK the British system of disclosure could be a great act to follow. Voters want to see all corruption identified and corrected. Be it from its representatives skimming tax payers through travel expenses or unions skimming funds, superannuation or insurance fees from members who pay for service.

Industry and Voters demand strong guidance when told to make austerity sacrifices and Tony Abbott has strength in spades if Malcolm Turnbull dislikes the possibility of dirt on his hands.

Corruption measures should apply equally to both sides of the political divide and the tripartite of Governments, Corporations and Unions equally. A snout in the trough is just that and Australian people shouldn’t condone such practices any longer.

Ex-Cop Advising On Riot Control Has Inflated Résumé

The day before federal police officers gassed peaceful protesters to make way for a President Donald Trump photo op, Geoff Perrin posted a picture on Instagram of officers bearing riot shields and squaring off with a group of demonstrators.

Perrin was “at the White House,” where he “served as an adviser to the US Secret Service and US Park Police responsible for protecting the area,” his company announced, using the hashtags “#riotcontrol” and “#publicorder.” A second post showed a line of armored police vehicles. “We are just waiting for them to pull the pin,” Perrin wrote in the caption.

Perrin has trained police officers around the country. His website features Molotov cocktails, riot vans, and semiautomatic assault rifles. Muscular and tanned with a salt-and-pepper crew cut, Perrin dishes out wisdom in a clipped South London accent in YouTube instruction videos, including one where he explains how riot shields “could be used as a weapon as well if need be.”

Perrin’s teaching draws on martial arts, as well as American and British police tactics, the latter of which he has claimed to have learned during years as an elite instructor and “tactical adviser” for the UK’s Metropolitan Police Service.

But several of those claims are false. Perrin was never a “tactical adviser” and he did not teach the advanced instruction courses he said he taught. And four current and former officers say the methods he has been teaching US law enforcement are far more aggressive than anything advocated by the Met.

Perrin’s teachings are “self-made, unproven, and legally not defensible,” a British police training coordinator told BuzzFeed News on condition of anonymity. “The only reason why he’s got so far is because the US police are so far back in methodology and tactics therefore they believe his bullshit.”

In phone interviews, Perrin admitted that he has made erroneous and “misleading” claims about his experience. Less than an hour after the first phone call, Perrin’s biography on his company website was taken down.

Perrin also acknowledged that, contrary to the impression his social media has created, he has not been working as a formal “adviser” with the Secret Service or the Park Police during the George Floyd protests. He said he has previously trained officers from both agencies, and wanted to give them a “basic refresh” and to supply them with helmets and limbguards. “I am not going to watch officers get injured because they didn’t have any equipment,” Perrin said. He said he has not been paid for this work, and that he “did not write” the company announcement that described him as an adviser.

Neither the Secret Service nor the Park Police responded to repeated requests for comment about their relationship, if any, with Perrin. The Maryland State Police confirmed to BuzzFeed News that it has worked with him and said that he gave the department legitimate credentials for the job, which they verified with British police. Federal records show that his company has also won contracts with the Department of Defense.

Perrin said he left the UK for family reasons, and because he believes that higher-ups there don’t do enough to protect cops who are trying to subdue crowds. But he was also sharply critical of “dinosaur tactics” in US policing. Many police departments offer “no training for what these guys are facing,” Perrin said. “Because they’re so dumb, it is a constant battle to get them to see a different viewpoint other than use of force” when responding to protesters.

“They just say, ‘Geoff, this is how we do things in America,’” he said. “My team are quite excited about the fact that US is actually going to look at some reforms because it needs to happen.”

Perrin told BuzzFeed News that he is a “massive advocate” against the use of tear gas. Before officers in Washington cleared the protest to make way for Trump’s photo op in front of St. John’s church, Perrin said he had been “concerned” about how much tear gas officers had and pushed commanders to “use other tactics.”

He claimed the Secret Service and Park Police largely followed his advice, and he blamed “other agencies” — namely the DC Metropolitan Police — for its use. He also pointed out that there were other federal officers there that night who refused to identify themselves.

Both the Secret Service and the Park Police have acknowledged using chemical agents designed to produce tears.

Most of the officers on the ground had “honest intentions,” Perrin said, and were short on both staff and supplies. “The police did the best they could with the equipment and the personnel they had.”

In 2001, violence erupted in the South London neighborhood of Brixton after an unarmed Black man named Derek Bennett was shot dead by the police. Metropolitan Police officers were accused of using excessive force to control the crowds.

Geoff Perrin was a medic with the force at the time, and an officer safety instructor in the London borough of Lewisham. He grew up in Brixton, and said the way police used to target his Black friends influenced his decision to join the force. “I wanted to see a change to policing,” he said.

But Perrin said he grew outraged at the way that police leadership responded to the 2001 unrest — he felt that rank-and-file officers were “thrown under the bus like sacrificial lambs.” Neither the Met and nor the UK’s Home Office responded to repeated requests for comment about Perrin’s time with British police.

In 2004, Perrin left the Met. Soon afterward he moved to the US. He claimed that his training methods had drastically reduced the number of officer injuries in Lewisham, and told BuzzFeed News he believed he might help police departments in the US do the same. In 2006, he helped start Survival Edge Tactical Solutions, based in Utah, with a fellow ex-cop, Jared Wihongi.

Once in the US, Perrin began winning contracts with American police forces to train them on crowd management and how to de-escalate tense situations, as well as on the use of protective gear.

Perrin also claimed during one phone interview that he spent a few years “teaching counterterrorism stuff for the FBI for their missions overseas.” The bio on his website listed work in numerous countries, including Cyprus, Germany, Croatia, Mongolia, Kenya, France, Canada, Singapore, and the Netherlands. The FBI did not respond to a request for comment.

His website says he has worked with a number of state and local departments, including the Utah Highway Patrol and Atlanta Police Department. Neither force responded to a request for comment.

While in Utah, Perrin was involved in the creation of a charity calendar featuring British bikini models firing guns, riding tanks, and posing with heavy artillery and soldiers in uniform. Two Utah police officers and several Utah National Guard members were suspended after a video of the “Hot Shots” shoot — featuring Perrin’s name in the credits — was posted on YouTube.

“There was nothing untoward, it was just way too racy for Utah,” Perrin said. But “it raised a hell of a lot of money for the help for heroes and special ops charities over here.”

That same year, he began working with the Maryland State Police, which was reviewing its own practices in the wake of mass unrest in Baltimore following the death of Freddie Gray. Thanks to his training, “we have updated our personal protective equipment to better protect our troopers and implemented tactics that enable us to end volatile situations quickly, while protecting the rights of peaceful protesters,” a spokesperson told BuzzFeed News.

It is unclear exactly when Perrin started overstating his credentials, but a Salt Lake Tribune article about the “Hot Shots” controversy refers to Perrin as a “tactical adviser.”

This is a phrase that holds serious meaning in UK policing circles — it reflects a specific job and elite training. To qualify for the job, an officer must pass a four-week course that is “generally regarded as the most physical course in the police,” a former public order instructor told BuzzFeed News. “It’s a very highly regarded role.”

Perrin used that term in the now-deleted bio on his website, and it is referenced in Facebook posts and in interviews. In an interview that Perrin did with an apparel company selling protective gear, an officer is photographed back to camera wearing a helmet plastered with a Union Jack sticker and the insignia “Tactical Advisor.”

Perrin also claimed to have been an elite instructor for the Met’s public order unit. Perrin acknowledged that he wasn’t as high-level an instructor as he put on his résumé, and that he didn’t work in the police’s central headquarters but at a local level, in the London borough of Lewisham.

“I’ll own it,” Perrin said of his résumé. “Yes, you know what, it was definitely fluffed up, and it’s being cleaned up 100%.”

Perrin told BuzzFeed News that he hadn’t used the statements in his bio to obtain any of his current contracts, because “Americans have not got the time for British policing,” so he has to win business by doing demonstrations.

“Nothing on that CV has helped me at all,” he said, “because they just go ‘What do you guys know about guns? What do you guys know about policing the type of violence we police here?’” Perrin insisted he got to where he is by hard work alone.

Perrin describes the methods behind his “hybrid” police-martial arts model in a number of videos online. In one posted in 2017, Perrin moves his arm in a punching motion to demonstrate how to “distance people.” Perrin says this is an effective “defensive” method if the officer doesn’t have a baton.

The move bears an eerie resemblance to one used by a Park Police officer on June 1 against an Australian news camera operator, which prompted an apology from the Park Police after Australia’s prime minister denounced the incident.

Perrin told BuzzFeed News that the officer used his elbow in a way that “we don’t teach.” For Perrin’s taste, the officer “would have to justify” his use of the technique. But he said the video doesn’t necessarily show the whole picture. “I can’t give you his perception or his fear of what happened,” he said. “I don’t know what happened before in that corner.”

“I can’t speak for what was going through his head at that period of time,” he added. “I don’t know how much sleep he had. If he’d done continued days of 16 hours extended tours, I just don’t know. Everyone has a different perception of fear.”

Perrin said his methods are all about reducing violence in riot control — by properly protecting officers. “You can’t expect them to stand out there and take projectiles,” he said. “Nobody wants to get hurt, and when an officer gets hurt, they can sometimes use more force than they may have intended.”

Three of the former and current British officers who spoke to BuzzFeed News said Perrin’s methods had little in common with what is taught in the UK, where officers rarely wear heavy-duty anti-riot equipment or military gear, and are taught to use force less frequently.

Perrin told BuzzFeed News the difference is intentional. He believes British police leaders don’t do enough to protect cops trying to subdue crowds, and that Americans often go too far. His “hybrid” approach is a balance between the two, he said.

Perrin believes that some of his former colleagues simply envy his success. “There’s a few people back home who are jealous that a South London boy who has come from pretty much nothing has done quite well for himself,” he said.

Perrin also pointed out that the mayhem in Washington on June 1 contrasted sharply with the work of his clients a short drive away in Maryland.

The Maryland State Police were called into action in Baltimore, where protests broke out soon after George Floyd’s death. According to multiple news reports, those protests unfolded more peacefully than they did in other cities.

The day before Trump’s walk to Lafayette Square, Perrin wrote about a double role — and dizzying schedule — on Instagram.

“From being down at the White House supporting our US Secret Service Level 1 team to then running with two Maryland State Police Level 1 teams to Baltimore. The teams did could [sic] crushed any problems in the City and Baltimore did not burn. Outstanding work and am safe and now in bed at 05.46.” In another post, he filmed Marine One carrying the president overhead. “Mr T coming home last night just before we got the call to go to Baltimore,” the caption read.

Perrin did not post anything about the events at Lafayette Square. And he has continued to post on social media, including from inside the White House, about working with the federal government.

On June 6, D-Day, Perrin posted a video saying he “was down at the White House training the White House personnel as in secret service” and that he had been invited to the map room to look at World War II maps. D-Day was a reminder of when “America showed everybody what they can do,” he said. ●

Racial Status And The Pandemic: A Combustible Mixture

In early March, Madalynn Rucker, then 69, agonized over whether to close her Sacramento consultancy office. On the 16th, she finally succumbed to a barrage of texts and calls from her daughter about the heightened risk of the coronavirus, and told her employees to begin working from home. That was three days before California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s statewide stay-at-home order.

Her daughter was right in more ways than one. While Rucker’s age alone raised her potential danger of being hospitalized or dying of COVID-19, she and many of her employees share another risk factor: They are black. Rucker wonders if more public health messages targeting African Americans could have helped millions like her better prepare for the disease’s onslaught.

Officials and commentators said little about race early in the pandemic, recalled Rucker, now 70 and the executive director of OnTrack, a diversity consulting firm. “Could this have made a difference in some way? Not just in educating ourselves, but in how the pandemic was controlled and managed?”

By late February, doctors in China had published that, in addition to older patients, those with chronic health conditions, particularly hypertension and diabetes, were more likely to have severe cases of COVID-19 that ended in ICU admission, mechanical ventilation or death.

It wouldn’t have been difficult, some community leaders say, for officials to make an explicit connection between the coronavirus risk factors and African Americans and Latinos, who are more likely to have chronic diseases, and at younger ages ― and then craft tailored, respectful messages for them.

“The messaging I got from the news was, is that if you’re young, you’re good, and if you’re old, you’ve got to stay home,” said Eddie Anderson, the 30-year-old pastor of McCarty Memorial Christian Church, an African American congregation in South Los Angeles.

When Anderson became ill with what turned out to be another viral infection in early March, he was alarmed by the lack of information about how to get tested for COVID-19. The experience motivated him to bring a physician friend to church the next week to explain the disease to his flock.

“I think targeted messaging to the African American community would have been helpful,” he said.

But public health and infectious disease experts say the novelty of the virus, whose targets and mode of attack continue to confound scientists, meant that specific racial disparities weren’t a foregone conclusion.

“I don’t know that it’s fair to say that it would have been something that could be 100% predicted,” said California Surgeon General Nadine Burke Harris. She called the novel coronavirus “a little bit of a head-scratcher.” For example, it doesn’t appear to affect children under age 2 or pregnant women the same way similar viruses would, she noted.

“Sometimes when you predict too strongly, it can have the effect of assuming that’s going to be the outcome, and it can come across pejoratively,” Burke Harris said.

But the disease has disproportionately hurt blacks. In California, 10% of COVID-19 deaths occurred among African Americans, who make up 6% of the state population. A national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention survey showed that 33% of hospitalized COVID patients were non-Hispanic blacks, though that group represented only 18% of residents in the surveyed communities.

Officials are finding it’s still difficult to talk about race and COVID-19. Fear of stigmatization remains high, said Burke Harris, who said she walks a fine line by letting certain groups know about the heightened risks without casting blame on them.

“One of the things I’ve been dealing with a lot in having conversations with black media and black health researchers, right, is this notion of, well, wait a minute, as this data is coming out, how are we not blaming black and brown communities?” said Burke Harris, who is black. “It’s like, ‘Oh, are you saying we’re sicker?’”

Preexisting conditions aren’t the only reason black people are dying at disproportionate rates of COVID-19, said Dr. Sonia Angell, director of the California Department of Public Health.

Despite states’ orders to stay at home, entire sectors of “essential” jobs have disproportionately high rates of minority employees, which increases their exposure risk. These workers don’t benefit as much from social distancing, Angell said.

“They’re the ones that are keeping our care delivery system functioning so that when any of us get sick, we have a place to go,” she said. “They’re the ones that are keeping our grocery stores running and stocked.”

The absence of coordinated, official public messaging in February and early March about the potential racial disparity of COVID-19’s impact created a vacuum into which conspiracy theories rushed.

Initially came rumors that black people were somehow resistant to the coronavirus. At the same time, black media outlets like The Philadelphia Tribune (Feb. 4), Essence (March 2), the St. Louis American (March 11) and The Undefeated (March 13) made the connection between the virus and America’s preexisting health inequalities, publishing forward-thinking pieces about the virus’ potential threat to black Americans because of chronic medical conditions, working and commuting conditions, and a historical lack of access to health care and insurance due to institutionalized racism.

Their predictions soon proved true. Local officials began noting higher death rates for black COVID-19 patients in Milwaukee on March 23. In the first week of April, city officials in Chicago, Los Angeles and New Orleans made similar announcements. The CDC published its first national data on racial disparities on April 8. A recent CDC study, published April 29, found that black people made up 83% of COVID-19 hospitalizations in Georgia, a disproportionate level compared with overall hospitalizations.

Public health messages targeting specific populations should be voiced by trusted community leaders, or at least someone of the same race, on media platforms where they’re most likely to be seen or heard, said Dr. Oliver Brooks, president of the National Medical Association, which represents black physicians.

A week after announcing the statewide shelter order, Newsom tweeted a public service announcement from Snoop Dogg, who said, “The longer you stay outside, the longer we’re going to be inside.”

Other targeted messages include Spanish-language public service announcements featuring Burke Harris and LA Galaxy soccer player Javier “Chicharito” Hernández. Those have run on Univision; Radio Bilingüe, a Spanish-language public radio network; and other Spanish-language stations, as well as Instagram and Facebook. In Hernández’s clip, he encourages listeners in Spanish to seek medical attention if they have COVID-19 symptoms, no matter what their immigration status is.

Targeted messaging can sometimes offend or insult, even with the best of intentions, said Daniel Schober, assistant professor of public health and behavioral psychology at DePaul University in Chicago.

The city of Chicago offended some with a 2015 flu shot campaign that featured a black baby on a billboard next to the words, “I am an outbreak.” It inspired graffiti artists to weigh in with their own message: “I am beautiful.”

But the city’s COVID-19 campaign, featuring Mayor Lori Lightfoot, who is black, has charmed residents, said Schober. The campaign played off social media memes depicting a no-nonsense Lightfoot shutting down iconic Chicago landmarks under shelter-in-place directives. The city’s official video showed the mayor baking, learning the guitar and sipping tea while exhorting people to “stay home, save lives.”

“That’s a great example of a message that isn’t necessarily tailored toward specific racial or ethnic groups, but is really meant to be universal in its reach,” Schober said.

All the way to the bitter end, and it is bitter, the fans want A-Rod. On Tuesday night, with Alex Rodriguez bizarrely left out of the lineup by the Yankees manager, Joe Girardi, Boston Red Sox fans chanted his name at Fenway Park, letting Bombers brass know they made a mistake by sitting the slugger who is (for now) set to retire after one more big night in the Bronx, this coming Friday against Tampa Bay.

Can you blame the Yankees for sticking it to their man, even if he was, at least seemingly, provided with a graceful exit plan on Sunday? After all, were talking about player who tried to torch his employers, the league he played in and the union who helped guarantee most of his 10-year, $275m deal during a scorched-earth defense of his role in the Biogenesis PED scandal.

Except this shouldnt be about the Yankees settling scores, this is about pure entertainment. And with the clock running down on one of the most significant sporting careers this country has ever known, limiting the owner of 696 of the most controversial home runs in history to pinch-hit duty is the direct opposite of giving fans what they want.

Yes, they still want A-Rod, a player who cant hit like he used to, but can still light up talk radio switchboards for hours, rattle social media and fill countless pages with pixel after pixel. In an era where content is in demand like never before, A-Rod has been just that: walking, living, breathing, never-ending content. At the next Baseball Writers Association dinner, they should give A-Rod an award for enriching their lives with some of the most colorful, controversial and polarizing stories theyll ever scribble. He deserves it, because another A-Rod isnt going to walk into the sport anytime soon.

A-Rod is arguably, along with his ex-team-mate, Derek Jeter, the most recognizable name in modern baseball times, and not just to sports fans, to everybody. A-Rod has transcended the game in a way almost all ballplayers dont. In retirement, his place in mainstream gossip columns will continue, especially if he sticks with billionaire CEO and co-founder of 23andMe Anne Wojcicki, who was once married to Google co-founder Sergey Brin: know any other baseball players who have landed in Vanity Fair lately?

The NFL has their Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and until last season, Peyton Manning, while the NBA has their LeBron James and a host of strong second-tier stars. After A-Rod, baseball has nobody on or near that level of national, crossover stardom.

Think about all the game-changing talent that is around the league today: Mike Trout, Clayton Kershaw, Jake Arrieta, Jose Altuve, Kris Bryant: the list of standouts goes on for a very long time, but theres no one that moves the needle like A-Rod, who is known by 50% of all Americans six years or older according to Q-Scores. Bryce Harper, who did make a late-night appearance with Jimmy Fallon in May, and is by far the least vanilla young ballplayer around, is the next highest at 20% awareness.

Every circuit wants to market its stars, who are the one of the main reasons the Big Four leagues are the behemoths they are today. But in todays sports world, MLB operates well despite the fact that their players have lower national awareness than those from other major North American sports leagues.

The league may wish their national ratings for all-star games and the post-season were rising rather than falling, but in MLB today, all of that matters much less overall. Their digital service, 33% of which was just picked up by Disney, is valued at a staggering $3.5bn, while local television and radio perform well. Their biggest issue is finding a way to maintain the status quo when it comes to the billions of dollars in local revenues earned via cable bundling, where many fans who dont watch an inning of baseball have been subsidizing huge rights deals for years and years.

So really, the model of pushing stars to drive national awareness across Major League Baseball has more or less been on life support for many years, meaning that the days of grandiose ad campaigns, as rare as theyve been, probably went out with Jeter.

As for Rodriguez, well, based on ticket sales for Fridays game, which is being broadcast nationally on Fox, hes certain to go out with a bang, whether he swings and misses or hits yet another A-bomb. As always, A-Rod will make an impact, simply by showing up.

The St Louis Cardinals, down 4-0 on Monday night to the Cincinnati Reds, on the verge of a three-game losing streak, got yet another gift from God. After rallying from a 4-0 ninth inning deficit, Yadier Molina stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and brought the winning home run by any means necessary.

Yadier does it again.

Theres only one thing worse than a bases-loaded walk to end a ballgame a bases loaded hit by pitch. Molina didnt exactly run away from Ross Ohlendorfs offering, and so Goose may be thinking that is one bush league way to win. Then again, hes probably thinking what we most of us think when the Cardinals somehow find a way to rise from the dead, and thats not printable here.

Nine thoughts in order

1) Prince Fielder is retiring from baseball after a second neck surgery forced the Rangers DH to call it quits. Aside from the sad news that one of the games most prodigious sluggers is retiring, it now confirms that then Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski made one heck of a deal when he shipped Fielder to Texas in exchange for Ian Kinsler. By the time Fielders deal runs out, he will have been paid $138m for 34 home runs and a .760 OPS over 289 games. The Tigers will have paid $62m for Kinsler up until 2018, which includes a $5m buyout of the final year of his deal, but doesnt count the $30m they kicked over to Texas to help pay Fielders deal. So for $92m total, Detroit have received an .794 OPS, in over 400 games and counting, with the second baseman currently enjoying his best season since 2008. Theres some relief for Texas however – its reported that some $36m of the remaining deal will be covered by insurance. Fielder retires with the same number of home runs as his father Cecil: 319.

2) Toronto Blue Jays starting center fielder Kevin Pillar is out with for at least two weeks with sprained thumb ligaments, and considering the way he routinely bounces around the Rogers Centre outfield walls and dives into its turf, its a real wonder how he wasnt injured sooner. Luckily, GM Ross Atkins, who is quietly patting his own back this week, has an everyday center fielder in Melvin Upton to replace him. Upton is enjoying something of a comeback season, but has been slow to get going in T Dot now hell get his chance to play every day and make that deal look even better.

3) Tim Tebow is going to try and play baseball, allegedly, and as usual, the media are tripping over themselves to cover whatever he does. Personally, I thought he deserved more of a chance in the NFL after guiding the Broncos to the playoffs in 2011, something a whopping 10,000 Denver fans agree with after signing a petition for his return. Baseball? Well, I was tempted to write that its never, ever, EVER going to happen. Then I saw this tweet from Gary Sheffield:

I thought the bobbleheads were an inaccurate portrayal of David, said Sam Kennedy said. To go further, I thought the facial features were racially insensitive. Sox brass later announced that fans in attendance would actually be eligible to receive a more politically correct doll with a significantly thicker neck once a new figurine is made.

5) Heres an admission: my fascination with Ichiro was such that I used to write emails about him to friends before every spring. Mostly they rambled on about certain stats on how he missed just 33 games over his first 11 seasons in Seattle, or that he would have almost definitely been MLBs all-time hit king had his career started off in North America.

The first Japanese player to play the field, Ichiro is without question one of the most intriguing players in the long history of the game, and his 3,000th hit is just the latest statistical wonder surrounding his game. Ironically, after all these years of racking up hit after hit, my fondest Ichiro memory remains his throwing out of Terrance Long in 2001.

6) Last month Pete Rose sued John Dowd for a statutory rape allegation the criminal defense attorney and former federal prosecutor made last year. During a 13 July 2015 radio appearance, Dowd, who lead the 1989 investigation into Roses gambling, referenced Roses ex-associate, Michael Bertolini, who allegedly told him that he ran young girls for him down in spring training, ages 12 to 14. Rose said there was no truth to the statements, which took place before the MLB commissioner, Rob Manfred, elected to not take him off the sports ineligible list in December. Now Dowd is trying to have the case dismissed, a move Roses attorney, Martin Garbus calls a stall tactic. Like anything involving Rose, this latest saga is unlikely to end anytime soon.

7) Yasiel Puigs reputation in Dodgerland continues to spiral. This time the recently demoted Puig was seen drinking beer in a party bus with a bunch of young Triple-A Oklahoma players, some of which were under the legal drinking age, having as much fun as possible inside a vehicle parked in Iowa. Unfortunately for Puig, who is just 25, these completely normal acts, which included singing, profanity and inside jokes, he posted videos of the partying on social media and so now its a full-blown controversy. Management said theyd handle it internally, while Puig merchandise was removed from Dodger Stadium stores. A word of advice to Yasiel: the nail that sticks up will be hammered down.

8) Terry Collins is under more pressure than ever after a shaky week featuring what were, more or less, indefensible decisions. On Saturday, down a run in the ninth and two outs, he didnt pinch-run for the plodding Jay Bruce, who was then thrown out at home to end the game.

Jay Bruce might be faster than anybody on our team for all I know, said Collins. I know he is a good base runner.

Bruce is new to the team, but in the age of information, there is no excuse for Collins: he has to know his players.

Making matters worse, Collins didnt challenge the call at the plate.

Mets fans have been critical of several of Collins moves this season, never mind the fact that he manages a would-be play-off team that hasnt won consecutive games since 7 July. However, few managers have had to deal with the injury issues hes faced over two seasons, and after taking New York to the World Series last season, hes probably safe for the rest of the season.

9) And finally, Clayton Kershaw is still finding ways to contribute in LA, despite being sidelined with back issues until at least 27 August. On Sunday, he led a dugout prank on Alex Wood.

DANM #2: Google&HTC, Laguardia Studios, and Equifax

Google&HTC:

On the 21st of September 2017 Google announced that it had signed an agreement with HTC. In a blog post published by Rick Osterloh, the Senior Vice President of Hardware at Google, he explained that Google had hired 2000 of HTC’s engineers. The acquisition also included a non-exclusive license for HTC intellectual property.

HTC is a Taiwanese consumer electronics company most well-known for developing phones and, more recently, virtual reality headsets. I wanted to learn more about this acquisition, as I believed it to be a defining moment in regards to the future of VR. However, it seems that Google may only be interested in the development of the Pixel brand. The newly hired HTC employees would continue to work on mobile hardware as a means to expand Google’s market share in the phone industry. Google created the Android Operating System and is installed on 89% of mobile device. This Operating System was used as a tool to provide users with various Google services. However, the android operating system has become less and less effective in doing so (going as far as having the European Union accusing google of using the OS as a means of skewing the market). Thus, by focusing on creating their own hardware, they would have no problem also giving users access to their services. Bringing in house the team that worked on the Google Pixel seems like the logical next step in improving their mobile hardware.

But what does this mean for HTC? At this point, it is sort of hard to say. HTC will remain a functioning company that will continue producing hardware for both the mobile and VR industry. HTC has confirmed again that it is currently working on another phone. However, if you were to indulge my speculation, HTC’s market share in the mobile industry has been decreasing. While it did have a 10% market share in Q3 of 2011 this has dropped to 0.9% in 2016 having only sold 13.9 million compared to Samsung and its 311 million units shipped. Considering these numbers and today’s agreement, I wouldn’t be surprised to see HTC give up on mobile and focus all of its efforts on VR. With the 1.1 Billion dollars they just earned, I see them possibly using that in two ways in regards to VR. They could drop the price of the headsets once again. Though they would most likely operate at a loss (if they are not already doing so), this could potentially increase the VR player base. They would then have more opportunities to make money through software sales. The other route would be to develop a new headset that would be more innovative than its competitors, confirming to the public the HTC is the leading brand when it comes to VR. This could potentially attract a new crowd of people to VR.

Much is still in the air. It will be exciting to see what more hardware google has to announce on October 4th and what HTC will do now that they can stay afloat for a little longer.

LaGuardia Studios:

Last Friday, the Digital Art and New Media class went to the LaGuardia Studios. I had been to the Maker Space in Brooklyn before which also provides advanced digital media services, so I had some understanding as to what to expect. Needless to say, I was very impressed with LaGuardia Studios.

The studio is divided into two floors, a ground floor and a basement. The space itself was somewhat small, but it created a rather intimate and cozy vibe. The ground floor has around 6 sets of computers that can be used as various work stations. You can use these computers to work on almost any project as they are installed with most editing software such a Maya or Z-brush. Certain of these computers are directly linked to printers. These range from paper printers to small scale 3d printers. The paper printers are free to use, though you have to bring in your own paper. Furthermore, students also have access to wide printers to print posters. These printers could also print high quality pictures.

One thing that really set LaGuardia apart was the whole atmosphere of the ground floor. All around the space, there were various 3d printed objects displayed around. It felt like a small art gallery. It was inspiring to see all the work other students had done in the past. Furthermore, the people who work at LaGuardia were also working on various project either personal or for students. This is nice as it feels like there is always happening. The staff are also very pleasant and are eager to help.

The basement is a whole other beast. While the ground floor works as a display and work space, the basement almost feels like a high tech art studio. The basement is filled with huge printers and many 3d printed models. The basement also had one of the coolest pieces of technology. Students have access to some sort of laser scanner. It can be used to create a digital render of a physical object. That render can then be exported to be used as a 3d object or even to be printed.

All and all LaGuardia studios is a fantastic resource. There are many work stations, printers, and laser scanners. However, the staff working there are very pleasant and make an effort to display student work within the space.

Equifax:

Equifax, the credit reporting agency, found itself in hot water recently after they announced that they were the victims of a cyberattack on Sepetember 7th 2017. This cyberattack led to the theft of about 143 million people’s personal information. This would include names, social security numbers, birthdates, addresses, and, for some, driver’s license numbers and credit card information. Needless to say, this was a pretty serious breach and leaves the people affected in a very vulnerable position.

This will most likely lead to one of the worst cases of identity theft in the United States. With all that information, the hackers could be able to open bank accounts in a victim’s name, max out credit cards, and more.

To save face, Equifax is providing protection packages. To get access to these packages, you would need to provide the last six digits of your social security number. The protection plan seems to offer one year of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection. However, it seems absurd to me that you would give the company that got all your personal information compromised a second chance at protecting more information. Furthermore, once the membership ends, if the consumer decides to continue to receive the protection, they will be charged. Thus, they are giving money and information to the company that lost all their information. But most egregious is the fact that by opting in to this protection package, you waive the right to arbitration, meaning you cannot sue the company. The only way to opt out is by sending a letter to Equifax within thirty days. This seems like a rather complicated way to opt out, when simply ticking a box online would have been much easier and way more effective.

But the story does not end there. After the breach, Equifax created a new website to help customers see is they were affected by the breach. The website itself is www.equifaxsecurity2017.com. Now the reason this is important is because by creating a new domain, Equifax is making it easier for scammers and phishers to take advantage of unsuspecting victims of the hack. The new domain provides less security than having it be a subset of their own domain (http://equifax.com/...). Scammers can emulate the new domain very easily, and that is exactly what happened. Software Engineer Nick Sweeting created a website called www.securityequifax2017.com and had it look very similar to Equifax’s own website. Equifax really managed to show their competence as they were accidently tweeting links to Nick Sweeting’ website rather than their own. This proves how dangerous this domain practice is. Sweeting has since taken the website down, and Equifax has apologized for the “confusion”.

This Equifax controversy is far from over. The reasonable thing for them to do at this point is take the necessary steps in making their new domain a forwarding link to their Equifax website, and educate customers properly as to the nature of phishing.
