What the scrib
Tumblr media
Heres my dwemer oc. He has a name, he just forgot it. He forgot because hes really bad at remembering names and didnt need to use his own name for 4000+ years. He was stuck in the Outer Realms this whole time because he got lost. Maybe time moves differently out there. It only felt like 20 years at most to him. Eventually he just names himself Vanchnraldch (vanch for short) until he can remember his actual name.
I figured the dwarves of skyrim dressed warmer and totally took advantage of all the blue and green mushrooms that grew pretty abundantly underground to use as dyes and probably other stuff too. Hes not wearing anything fancy, kinda commoner clothes for a dwemer. Hes supposed to have glasses but they broke so he cant see shit. Hes from Nchuand-zel.
More long oc lore rambling
Why was he in the Outer Realms? Because of one ridiculously impulsive decision. See, Vanch liked to make small model versions of creatures. Extremely intricate and detailed models, but they werent autonomous or anything. They were much more comparable to wind-up toys (do NOT call them toys he will get mad at you)(and if hes feeling upset at himself enough he'll call them toys too) and he made them all by himself by hand. Usually, he would make mudcrabs. This is because he is totally obsessed with mudcrabs and think theyre the best things ever to exist. He rescued a mudcrab from the brink of death from a slaughterfish and replaced most of its heavily damaged exoskeleton with dwarven metal and he named it Kraben and Kraben is his most favoritest thing in the world. He firmly believes the sounds mudcrabs make have something special to it (nobody else agrees with him). Of course, he makes plenty of other things, lots of bugs, sometimes people, whatever other animals hes seen. Scribbles down very detailed diagrams and notes about every creature he sees... unfortunately for him it never occured to him to write down the names of anyone hes ever spoken to despite being well aware he has trouble remembering. Anyway, eventually he ran out of creatures to make and he hit a creative block and it was stressing him out. Having nothing to do is like torture to him, dude can hardly sit still even when he is doing stuff. So, hes young, hes full of energy, hes impulsive, hes overconfident, he decides one day he's gonna open a portal to some random plane of Oblivion and look at all the creatures they got over there. And then come back after hes satisfied. Well, he knew himself well enough that he figured it would take at least 10 years before he was gonna go home.... then he realized, "uh oh, i cant figure out how to get back" so he tries not to worry too much and spends another unplanned 10 years going every which way... hes probably managed to end up in places nobody else has ever been. Who knows whats out there. Unfortunately, not him, because as i said before, hes nearsighted and his glasses broke at some point so hes been going through the realms half blind. Its a genuine moracle that he survived. But he did managed to get a TON of notes on all sorts of things to make models of. Unfortunately he doesnt really care about that anymore because he really really really wants to get back home. He misses his parents and its way too weirdly quiet out there (my dwemer telepathy hc) and no mudcrabs and he scared he'll be lost forever.
You know how Septimus Sigmus mentioned the "dullest of the Dwemer"? Yeah.... Vanch isnt quite the DULLEST but... hes down there. He was still young though. And stubborn. He was supposed to take on an apprenticeship and never did bc he was way into his own thing which wasn't necessarily a bad thing but it did mean he missed out on some pretty historically sought-after info. He eventually makes it a habit to write peoples names down so he wont forget them.
So finally he manages to get back home and he very quickly realizes everything is way wrong. Whole bunch of things immediately sound out of tune and its way too quiet and everything looks like an earthquake hit it a billion times. And even worse, theres two random Altmer hes never seen before. One of them looks like hes seen a ghost and the other one looks like hes forgotten how to breathe with how excited he is. So Vanch is like "who the hell are you" and its Aicantar and Calcelmo, but Aicantar has to answer for both because Calcelmo is probably going to pass out. Kraben is with them (yes, Kraben is THE dwarven armored mudcrab) and immediately runs up to Vanch, which is the biggest possible relief to him at the moment while Aicantar, who is also really excited about the fact that a Dwemer just appeared from nowhere right in front of them, tries to very calmly ask if anyone else is coming back too.
Vanch has no idea what he means by that so he ignores it and instead asks him what happened to Nchuand-zel. Calcelmo finally regains his composure and explains that its been without maintenance for thousands of years. Vanch is... confused, to say the least, thinks this old man is messing with him for no reason, then Calcelmo and Aicantar both realize he probably genuinely doesnt know what happened. Calcelmo asks him where he just came from so Vanch tells him he was wandering the outer realms, totally not lost for real... then Vanch asks where everyone else is. Aicantar considers how to break the news to him or if they should even tell him that, but then Calcelmo just goes and outright says it: the dwarves all disappeared over 4,000 years ago in the First era.
"Huh?" is all Vanch can think to say. Instinctively he wants to deny it because of how absurd it is. Deep inside he can feel the dread building as he desperately tries to push away the acknowledgement of the fact that he doesnt actually have any idea how long hes been gone for... combine that with the state everything is in, and he knows full well Calcelmo isnt lying. But its such an absurd thing. Subconsciously he feels that he must have never gotten back home at all, that this is some odd Outer Realm or perhaps a parallel timeline he somehow ended up in that mimics the one he came from. But deeper and deeper still, he knows this is home. But he refuses to know it.
From then on, he answers what he can when he can because of COURSE Calcelmo is going to ask him 100 questions per second, and it lets Vanch gloat and brag about things. As proud as he is though, he wouldnt like to give false information. Hes honest when he doesnt know something. He doesnt want to tarnish the image of his people by making stuff up. They find his home while excavating, all his work still there pretty much intact. And there, the spider automaton he made as a child was still active and waiting patiently, having cleaned up some mess over the years and constantly attempting to clear rubble from the entrance.
After some time Vanch cannot stand being in his own room because nobody else is there. He really does miss his mom and dad and theyre gone. Instead of facing those feelings he leaves entirely, deciding to see all these other dwemer ruins around Skyrim. Aicantar goes with him for support since Vanch doesnt actually like fighting things as much as he talks shit about other people. In fact, he has a couple of staves that he uses instead, his most used one being for paralysis. He'll kill if he has to, of course, hed just rather not bc he kinda finds blood gross. Hes pretty easily extremely disturbed by people throwing up so you could imagine the kind of nightmare it was to come across Bthardamz. If theres any daedra that he genuinely despises, its Peryite. Whenever he goes anywhere he wears a dwarven helmet because he doesnt want people gawking at him (bc he doesnt know anyone anymore) and doesnt change anything else because he doesnt think Nords are bright enough to look at his clothes and realize hes a dwarf (most people dont, not bc theyre stupid but because dwarves have been Gone forever so any normal person would have absolutely no reference for how a dwarf dressed).
Eventually, he starts traveling by himself, just exploring whatever, and just out of sheer curiosity he ends up finding Serana. Yup, he does the Dawnguard stuff without ever actually getting involved with the Dawnguard. He did it entirely by accident. He helps Serana back to Volkihar, if only because she wouldnt leave him alone otherwise, and its... gross in there, because blood. And then Harkon does that whole offer and Vanch had to try his absolute hardest to not flat out call Harkons vampire lord form ugly because hes well aware of the danger hes in. He declines the offer, Harkon kicks him out, Serana shows up at the dwemer museum later, blah blah, then they end up having to enter the Soul Cairn. Vanch is terrified of going in because, well, the LAST time he went into an outer realm, 4000 years passed. So he doesnt. Tells Serana to deal with her own shit and then leaves. Then she comes back again, assuring him theyre not going to an outer realm this time. Vanch asks why she keeps going to him for help and she admits that shes scared to do it alone, and hes already helped her so far. So hes like, fine whatever, what are we even doing, and she explains the Tyranny of the Sun prophecy and that theyre gonna need to read an elder scroll somehow. Vanch immediately knows exactly what to do for that because he came across those ruins himself (Blackreach is one of the first places he explored because he heard of it growing up but never got to see it), so they go to Blackreach and into the Tower of Mzark to use the oculory to get the info from the elder scroll. So now they know they have to go to some cave.
Blah blah standard stuff, they meet Gelebor. Now the new issue is: Vanch knows the Falmer as the way everyone knows them. They were already like that by the time he was born. He vaguely knew about the War of the Crag, as Calcelmo explained it to him once, but he didnt think it was an actual major thing. He didn't even know the full story of why the Falmer were like that since it happened so long before him. So to see an actual normal looking Falmer standing there.... who gave him an unreadable look, all of a sudden Vanch knew he was way in over his head with whatever the hell was about to happen. In fact, he was nervous. And Vanch being nervous means hes either going to go dead silent or obnoxiously rude... unfortunately for both him and Gelebor, he was rude. Not about what happened to the Falmer, but about Auri-El. Gelebor, having already heard similar things before, mentally praying Auri-El gives him the patience he needs to deal with a dwarf (and trying not to think too much on how there could possibly even be one here to begin with), of all the people that couldve possibly shown up, goes ahead and asks that they kill his brother anyway so they can get the bow. Kind of just so they would leave him alone sooner.
The whole way up to Vyrthur, Vanch slowly grapples with how fucked up this all is. For the first time in his life hes seeing the Falmer as actual people. Which makes it all the worse that Gelebor calls them "the Betrayed" because he now fully understands exactly why. He isnt sure he should be doing any of this at all. It makes him think about how all his kind are gone too. It makes him think about how he shouldnt even be here at all. Most of all, he knows he wont have the guts to kill Vyrthur, but he doesnt want to die either. He silently hopes that Serana will be more capable than him. Or that Vyrthur would be willing to talk.
Of course Vyrthur is NOT willing to talk. Just the sight of Vanch is as if Auri-El himself was rubbing salt in old wounds. At that moment Vyrthur doesnt even care about Serana anymore. He just needs this damned thing to get out of his sight. Vanch almost dies and then he kills Vyrthur. Yeah, they needed the bow, but Vanch doesnt want anything to do with it. To say he felt terrible about everything that just happened is a massive understatement. Then Gelebor shows up again. Vanch doesnt even take the bow. In a daze, he just apologizes and then leaves, so he lets Serana take it instead.
Vanch is way unfocused and goes straight back to Nchuand-zel. Serana can tell he would absolutely not be up to fight Harkon yet, but she isnt sure how much shes willing to wait. But she gives him time. Eventually Vanch pulls himself together, takes the bow, but then asks Aicantar if he wants to come fight a crazy powered vampire lord. Aicantar hesitantly agrees, so the three of them go to face Harkon, Vanch keeping his distance so he can focus on using the bow (he is not good at it). They defeat Harkon, so Vanch turns right around and leaves. Goes straight back to the Forgotten Vale by himself. Serana can tell what Vanch is doing and knows he needs to be alone.
Vanch gets up to the Chantry where he sees Gelebor, who is staring out over the balcony. Vanch puts the bow back in its pedestal and then hesitates to leave. A very big part of him wants to go talk to Gelebor but an equally big part of him wants to go home. But home doesnt feel like home anymore, it hasnt for a while now. He tries to approach Gelebor but hes scared. He cant really pinpoint why, but he is. Gelebor is well aware that Vanch is standing behind him but neither of them say anything to each other. For Vanch, its really that he doesnt know how to say what he would like to with words. For Gelebor, hes just feeling a lot of things. After enough very uncomfortable silence, Gelebor invites Vanch to stand with him, so they both silently stare out over the Vale.
They have a lot of smaller interactions as Vanch visits Gelebor every now and then that very gradually build up to an unlikely friendship. At some point Vanch offers to help fix up the Chantry. Vanch has a weird sort of attachment to him since they both have a "last of their kind" issue and Gelebor is, admittedly, sort of enjoying having someone around. Theyre kind of like... uncle and nephew kind of dynamic i guess. It doesnt happen for a while though.
Obviously Vanch doesnt know about the Last Living Dwemer just yet, but he does eventually learn more about the stuff that happened at Red Mountain and if he isnt careful he'll go down his own spiral trying to find either a way back to that time so he can personally beat the shit out of Kagrenac or a way to bring everyone back or a way to join everyone else or a way to finally just accept it all. Sometimes its good that hes easily distracted. What he'll never know is that the disappearance happened only a few years after he had left, meaning even if he did come back when he meant to, everyone still wouldve been gone.
To be completely honest he was initially supposed be me entertaining the idea of a dwemer ldb but the more i thought about him the less that became anything to do with his character so i decided to just not have it be the case

Yo imagine Wyatt being raised by the cleaners and coming back as an adult but time moves differently in the void (idk where they live) and it’s only been a few minutes. THE DRAMA tm I mean imagine Piper’s outrage! It could encompass a whole freaking season!! And then just because I’m a sucker for Phoebe’s baby living, like they could have stolen this child too! Twice!Blessed Wyatt & Source!Touched Dency as Cleaner siblings 👀
i feel like this would be like the Quintessential like network tv drama move tho like bc like. child actors? who wants em? they’re not that good, there are a whole bunch of rules about how long they can be on set for, you gotta bend over backwards trying to film a scene of theme fighting a demon w/o actually having them be in the room with said demon bc they get scared. bc they’re a child. when instead of having a child actors,,, you could have a grown human actor. amirite lads? i feel like this is definitely like a thing i swear they did this on ouat with belle and rumplestiltskin’s baby bc like. who wants a baby as a character when you can get the abc equivalent of kylo ren i guess? like who wants a baby wyatt when you could have a full grown adult wyatt who is still trying to get a hang of being in a human world bc he’s grown up in like. a void. and i Love the idea of dency being with him too especially bc i think they would form this sibling bond without ever actually know that they’re cousins (bc i don’t think the cleaners would like tell them of their lineage) and i also think powers are like augmented in the void i think both of these kids powers would be dampened probs like to that or a normal witch (and the cleaners would know any better bc uhh quite frankly they don’t host witches very often) so once dency and wyatt go out into the real world and find out they have like powers like a god that’s also gonna be a trip. i also think it’d be like inch resting bc i think obvi dency and wyatt would be drawn to the manor in one fashion or another bc well a) the plot needs it but b) it’s like their ancestral home it’s the nexus they feel the pull and the charmed ones would like equally feel this connection to wyatt and dency bc like you know That’s Their Children but they don’t know that. bc like piper’s been wiped of the idea of wyatt but it’s still something that you know she always mulls over that feeling when you lose a tooth and you can’t help but poke and prod at the lil vacancy where it once was and i think she feels like this really strong connection to wyatt bc she’s like if i had a son i would want him to be like you and i think like the more time she and wyatt spend around each other the more she’d really get echoes of y’know having wyatt but she just thinks they’re like he mind constructing fantasies of what it would have been like to have a kid besides wyatt’s like twentysomething so clearly like they can’t be related but like They Feel Related but it’s probs just the fact that she regrets never having kids latching onto her. leo will occasionally pop in but he doesn’t like spending time around wyatt something about him like puts leo in pain and he can’t figure out why so he thinks it’s just like Instincts and he goes to do some like digging into exactly who this dude is meanwhile piper’s been having this whole crisis about the fact that she never had kids blah blah blah which is specifically dredging up memories for phoebe about her own pregnancy that only last like two months but was still like a very formative time for her (the cleaners got a hold of dency when the source/seer/whatever was vanquished and the found the essence of the sources heir left still imbued with the power of the source of all evil and a charmed one and then went zoinks shouldn’t leave that just lying around that’s way too much power and it’s definitely not be used responsible we’re gonna take this back to The Void™ just to make sure it doesn’t go haywire well much to their surprise within a couple months that essence has now taken the form of a Human Child and they’re like a child but y’know they can’t Kill It because then it’s just release the essence in a less tangible form (also it’s a baby) so they’re like word well okay what if like we raised the kids and another cleaner is like what and the first cleaner is like okay well the whole reason we brought the essence back was so that it didn’t go haywire and destroy everything and make our jobs all a lot more difficult so like what if we raised the kids and taught them the ways of the cleaners! and cleaner two is like what ew no let’s just trap it in a giant ice cube and call it a day and the eldest cleaner is like no cleaner one is onto something so blah blah blah by the time they have to vanish wyatt and entire baby they’re like hey we’ve got another one now we can give dency a sibling!) so like blah blah blah (oh also fun fact in this au dency has the same haircut as the cleaners) and phoebe’s just sorta like she feels like the has this connection to dency but she thinks it’s just cuz she’s like a young witch who like loves her powers and like has a close bond with her sibling and phoebe just thinks she sees herself in dency blah blah blah oh cole’s spirit who is like fuckin creepin around the house or whatever in a very disturbing manner Also Sees Dency and is like hey. hey what’s up with that. blah blah blah leo has done his digging and confronts wyatt like why don’t you exist and wyatt’s like what and leo’s all like aggressive & upset bc he’s trying to protect his family and wyatt’s just like really confused like i was raised in a void with my sister?? like normal people???? and blah blah blah dency gets involved which gets phoebe involved and then piper’s showing up like what’s all this then and leo’s like accusing wyatt of lying and saying like the two of them are trying to infiltrate the family and get closed to the charmed ones to like you know learn magic straight out of the book of shadows something or others and then the cleaners themselves actually show up like okay kids this was fun and all but like it’s time to pack it up like let’s go home and like dency and wyatt are both like hey no we like being like here we like being out in the real world and the cleaners are like okay but you have to think of what’s best the real world just isn’t safe for you you’re too powerful to ever fit it you’ll always be ostracized and made out to be villains it’s better with us it’s safe with us just come home and like you know now paige has also shown up and the charmed ones are like who the hell are you and leo’s like what the actual fuck is going on right now Are Those Cleaners and wyatt and dency are like standing strong with each other and they’re like we can live here we can be safe here like please just give us another chance and the cleaners are like i’m sorry we can’t it’s just too dangerous and wyatt’s like i’m not letting you take me away again! and dency’s like again? and piper’s like yeah again? and phoebe and paige are like what does that mean? and like the gears are turning in leo’s head and like for once he really leans into the emotions that sorta y’know know double double toil and trouble underneath the surface whenever he’s around wyatt bc he always ran from them, they were painful and he figured it was because wyatt was well like evil but now he’s not running and he’s leaning into it and really trying to figure out what he feels and it’s this insane loss and fear and longing but underneath that is like joy and elation and absolute happiness and unconditional love and he remember the time wyatt was born meanwhile phoebe the empath has basically been knocked off her feet with the tidal wave of raw emotion that just shot out from leo and she has the same realization and leo’s like I’m Not Letting You Take My Son Again. and wyatt’s like what and piper’s like what and phoebe like also takes a stand and she’s like dency and wyatt are our family. and you can’t take them. and wyatt and dency are looking at each other like ????? but they’re like game they don’t want to leave and the cleaners are like you know what no No absolutely not and they take dency and wyatt and they wipe the halliwells’ memories and fuck off back into the void but now the ball is rolling and dency and wyatt are like no who are we who were they that was our family and the cleaners are like you don’t have family and dency and wyatt are like that’s not true and you know it and wyatt like piper’s my mother isn’t she and the cleaners are like don’t ask stupid questions and wyatt’s like she is!! i knew it! i fucking knew it!!! and dency sorta sitting there and she’ll totally you know go to bat for wyatt and she believes the halliwells are her family but she just doesn’t feel this connection wyatt has like wyatt Knows piper’s his mother but dency doesn’t feel the same way. she doesn’t have the same connection that like wyatt has. but blah blah blah they aren’t able to argue long bc they’ve sense a shift in the void meaning someone’s out there exposing magic and they go and it’s the charmed ones fucking up things and the cleaners are like word we can get rid of you too and wyatt’s like if you do i’ll go & destroy everything and paige is like yeah love the energy not actually necessary bc you guys aren’t allowed to get rid of us bc well not to flex but we’re the charmed ones and the cleaners are like yeah big whoop and phoebe’s like how familiar are you with the cosmic balance and the cleaners are like . and phoebe’s like yeah though so and paige is like you can’t kill us without drastically tipping the scales. and the cleaners are like fine what do you want and they’re like we want dency and wyatt and the cleaners are like well shouldn’t it be their choice whether or not they want to go with you and the charmed ones are like fine ask them i’m not worried and wyatt’s like i’m going with the halliwells period end statement but then like cleaner one the initial cleaner who was like let’s care and raise dency is like talking to her like please. it’s safer with you here. wyatt feels his connection with them. what do you feel? we raised you, we care for you, we love you, we want to see you safe. we’re your family. and dency’s just like who am i. and the cleaner’s like nothing they would like. and dency’s like that doesn’t answer my question. and the cleaners are like you’re the source’s heir. and the charmed ones are like She’s The What. and dency’s like i’m what. and the cleaners are like you are the daughter of the source of all evil. you are the epitome of power and destruction. but we can keep you safe, we can keep you from hurting anyone. and phoebe’s like are you gonna tell her the rest. and dency’s like tell me what. and phoebe’s like you may be the daughter of the source of all evil. you’re also the daughter of a charmed one. you’re my daughter. and dency’s like What. The Fuck. and the cleaners are like oh don’t be so generous you carried her for all of two months she is not your daughter and dency’s like What. The Fuck. and like paige and piper and in the background and like the gears are turning in their heads like cole’s kid??? and the cleaners are like when we found you you were barely an essence all that was left over from a brutal vanquish and dency’s like WHAT. THE FUCK. and phoebe’s like you took my kid from me! and the cleaners are like you vanquished her! and phoebe’s like we vanquished the seer! we stopped the source of all evil! and it cost me my child don’t you dare say i did this to her and dency’s like you know what actually no and she flames out and piper’s like well i guess you have your decision feel free to get the fuck out of my attic now and the cleaners are like like you guys are assholes and there’s a reason we let prue die 😗✌ and dip and piper’s like if a see another cleaner ever again i’m gonna vanquish that motherfucker So Quick he won’t even have time to ruin yet another one of my family photos. blah blah blah wyatt’s like At Home he’s reunited with his family and they’re so happy to have him back and piper’s like let me cook you a really nice dinner the last time i cooked for you it was just pureed carrots i’m hoping you’re palate’s gotten a little more refined and wyatt’s like thanks mom that really means a lot but i can’t stay here i can’t turn my back on dency she was my family before i even knew i had one i have to go find her so of course the let him go blah blah blah he finds dency blah blah blah heart to heart blah blah blah they all reunite blah blah blah happy ending : )

So, I watched the Death Note movie.
Tumblr media
I have an unpopular opinion for you: I actually liked it.
Now, before you jump to my throat with this, hear me out for a sec.
I’m a huge DN fan, as you probably know if you’ve been following me for a while. I’ve read the manga and watched the anime several times and in several languages. I’ve watched about every live adaptation, including fan-made material. I cosplay. I write fan fic and opinion essays. I draw fan art. I roleplay. Blah, blah, blah.
So yes, I take my shit quite seriously, and I could hardly explain how much DN has changed my life. Then why the hell did I like Netflix’s adaptation?
1)    I knew, from the very moment I found out Netflix would make an American adaptation, that it wouldn’t be really Death Note. It’s miraculous enough that Ryuk and the Death Note exist at all. Yes, I was pissed at the beginning, but I decided I wouldn’t watch this movie as a hardcore fan, but as a regular person watching just any film. Guys, we all knew it wouldn’t be loyal to the source material. That doesn’t make it into a terrible movie by itself. Just… don’t think about it as an adaptation, but as a completely different story with vaguely similar character names.
2)    And that’s actually alright, given that Netflix never meant to target us unconditional DN lovers. The creators knew we’d all watch it, at least to properly hate it, anyway. This movie is aimed at people who probably never got in deep touch with the series before and are just looking for some entertainment. So yes, the plot has been twisted beyond reason, but you should at least admit that, if you all weren’t DN fans, you would’ve found it interesting, to say the least.
3)    N’s DN is a gross, unforgiveable White-wash, and we can all agree on that. But in terms of business, the decision wasn’t all that bad. I’ll take my mother as an example here. I tried to introduce her to the series before, several times. But ever since her lil’ girl became this weird weeb writing now, she sort of rejects anime and Japanese culture in general (I know. She’s a monster. She’s also a racist, a homophobe and damn I could keep on going forever. Unfortunately, there are lots of people like here out there). However, when I told her Netflix would make a live, American adaptation, she was actually thrilled. “Now that it’s not all cartoonish I can actually enjoy the story!”, she said. Be honest: how many people out there reject anime without even giving it a try, just because it’s “Japanese cartoons” and it’s “weird”? N’s DN is WhiteTM trash. But it’s still a good business. Sorry.
4)    About characterization:
Light Turner. Edgy as fuck? Overreacting? Take a chill pill? What the hell happened to cunning, sociopathic prodigy Light Yagami? “This isn’t good. I actually like him”, said a friend of mine while watching the movie. God, I was upset. This isn’t the Light we all wanted so bad to see at all.
Or is he? That ending, for Kira’s sake. Friendly reminder that Light Turner cold-bloodedly wrote Mia Sutton’s name on the Death Note, and even specified how she, while falling to her death, would rip that one page from the Note, which would eventually be burnt down. He literally sacrificed Mia to save himself and even planned a few days ahead so he’d brush off the police’s suspicions and get the Note back in one shot. All of it written in detail in the Death Note, everything executed with impeccable acting skills to match his smarts. He fooled Mia into believing him to be that naïve, way-too-emotional boy, to the bitter end. He looked at her in the eyes with devastation as she fell to the death he had staged for her. If that’s not the sociopathic manipulative piece of crap we all know and love, then I don’t know what it is. And if he managed to pull that off, then I can’t say for sure he didn’t pretend to be a naïve, stupid boy from the very beginning. As to Nat Wolff’s abilities as an actor, I think he did an amazing job with what he was given. He’s super expressive, and managed to bring to life a very complex character.
Mia Sutton. Bitch! Manipulative as fuck. What the actual hell. But! Misa Amane had always been reckless when it came to using her power as the Second Kira. She makes rash decisions and cares little about anything and anyone, herself included. Also, she’s ready to do anything, and kill anyone, to get Light’s attention and monopolize him. It’s only natural that Mia doesn’t quietly sit and watch while the Light Turner she fell for fades away, because Misa would do something about it. You all guys said you were pissed at Misa for being so stupid, then why hate Mia? In the end, she remained true to Light. She loved him for real. And the only reason why she snatched the Note from him: because that was what Light specified she’d do! It wasn’t even a choice to begin with.
Have you ever wondered if, only maybe, ever since Mia suggested that they changed the world together, Light has been thinking of ways to get rid of her? I believe he manipulated her through and through, just as he fooled us all. I believed he wanted Mia to underestimate him. He wanted it all to culminate in her death, without ever looking like the bad guy himself (quite a Light Yagami thing to do, in my opinion). That’s why I think Ohba and Obata said they loved the adaptation; because they could see beyond the façade, while we all easily fell for it.
L. I have no words here. Lakeith Stanfield did a superb job at portraying L with all his quirky habits and characteristic speech, plus that more childish, Watari-deprived side of L we don’t get to see very often in the original series. Not to mention that perfect Japanese! In addition, the fact that the most intelligent character in the story, and one of the main and most loved parts, was given to a black actor is amazing. This deserves our approval. Stanfield’s job is about the only thing about N’s DN we can all agree was a good decision.
Watari. The only thing that pissed me off is that his name was actually just Watari. Otherwise, I freaking loved the man.
Ryuk. Superb. No negative comments whatsoever. Awesome choice of actors. Acceptable animation. All in all, that’s some good shit.
5)   About the movie as a cinematographic piece: It was quite good. The choice of music was excellent. In regards to lighting, color contrast, angles and shots, beautiful. Special effects were quite alright, and all in all it was very harmonic, visually-wise. And it sort of managed to compress lots of context in an hour and a half in a logical way. Some moments, like Light creepily walking into the dim-lit dining room or rolling his eyes white into their sockets will never leave my mind.
There’s much more I didn’t cover in this post, so if you find any holes in my arguments or have further doubts on topics I haven’t talked about, please get in touch with me, so we can properly discuss it.
Well, if this hasn’t been enough to convince you, feel free to keep on hating N’s DN. You can also clog my inbox with anon hate or tell me I’m an idiotic whiteTM trash for defending this piece of crap. I just needed to state my opinion. Who knows, I might have changed your perspective on the whole subject for the better.
By the way, the cosplayers on the picture above are @lassieonvalium as Light and me as L.
