Detective Kachi’s offer rattled around Gwynn’s head. She needed to know how, and how much, the detective knew about Korynn, simply to hide Korynn better. Or, if it came down to it, wipe police intel about herself. But Gwynn could not tell the truth. It was not as simple as Detective Kachi believed it to be, what Gwynn would love it to be. Gwynn could not start to imagine what would happen if she did tell her story. Her dad would have a massive bombshell moment, for one, and probably not cope, evidently by the recent loss of her other parental figure. Gwynn had to be there if he was to know about everything, else her dad should take it one manageable chunk at a time, at his own pace. If her dad broke down, social services would surely be called, with useless counselling, before the scientists and media would hoard and scrape every data point, every last drop of information about her, every last blood sample for too many tests, sucking her dry. Then they would suck the other reality dry too, discarding her. Making that reality be in unimaginable danger. A very real chance of Crayon getting hurt. Badly.

So what? You want to find more about me, don’t you? Either way, Crayon will get hurt. The question is, how? Certainly, more than just info will be spilt over your body.

“What do you mean?” Gwynn hissed to Korynn. She did not answer.

“So?” Kachi broke Gwynn away from her inner dilemmas.

Should Gwynn pretend to say the truth? Or should she just deny the offer? If she lied again, Kachi was just going to trip her up again and too much will have been said. But she needed to know what Kachi knew desperately. She had to keep Korynn a secret desperately.

Everything would be destroyed if Gwynn told the truth, and everything would be destroyed if Gwynn lied.
