Was reading about the Eight Trigrams in Chinese mysticism, which I definitely don't grok fully but are an interesting exercise in the powers of 2 and whose existence I only know of because it's written the exact same way as the word for "gossip"... anyway I came across a familiar two characters:
name: 巽 xùn image in nature: 風 fēng (wind) phase: wood attribute: penetrating state: gentle entrance animal: 雞 jī (fowl/chicken) (but also a modern slang for penis is 小雞雞, little chicken)
Conclusion: Xunfeng's name is a dick joke *

Meanwhile, in the last couple of days riot police have repeated charged into the Chinese University of Hong Kong campus, firing hundreds of tear gas bombs, with at least tens of students getting injured, vice-chancellor Rocky Tuan trying to mediate without success; demonstrators and police on campus coming into repeated violent conflict, and demonstrators throwing petrol bombs at police response, the glow of fire everywhere. Into the night, vandalism occurred across Hong Kong, and traffic obstructed.
Over the past five months, law enforcement and use of weapons have been called into question, Chief Executive Carrie Lam has used the Independent Police Complaints Council to carry out investigation; however a day ago a member of the International Experts Panel of the IPCC invited by the SAR government, Clifford Stott made a statement expressing their power and resources were insufficient as well as unable to cope with the scale of the societal situation, suggesting the next step was to create an independent organization to more thoroughly investigate. If independent review of police actions were to be restricted again, it would be difficult to penetrate the question of problems in law enforcement or the many incidents to the roots of the crisis. With the police firing tear gas and more at the public, in residential areas and on campus, have they respected the guidelines? How can the public’s misgivings be resolved?

Hiro REVIVER Interview with Famitsu July 2017
REVIVER is my favourite song from ALL LEAD TRACKS. Since my Japanese learning is not progressing anywhere and I still failed at memorizing Kanji, it was a good idea to make my demotivated brain go through another interview in which Hiro talked about REVIVER and the Hortensia Saga project.
This interview is pretty special because the interviewer is one of the music creators for Hortensia Saga, Mr. Makoto Sato from f4samurai *. I hope Google gave the correct pronunciation of his name.

佐藤 : ゲームの主題歌を制作するというのは初めてのことだったと思いますが、進め方なども含めていかがでしたか? さとう: げーむのしゅだいかをせいさくするというのははじめてのことだったとおもいますが、すすめかたなどもふくめていかがでしたか? Sato : I think that it was the first time for you to produce the theme song of a game, but how was it, including how did you go about (doing it)?
Hiro : そうですね、僕の場合、楽曲をなにもないところから作るよりも、なにかテーマがあったほうが作りやすいです。本当になんでもいいので。ですので、しっ かりとした世界観や物語がある『オルサガ』の楽曲制作はやりやすかったですね。 Hiro: そうですね、ぼくのばあい、がっきょくをなにもないところからつくるよりも、なにかてーまがあったほうがつくりやすいです。ほんとうになんでもいいので。ですので、しっかりとしたせかいかんやものがたりがある『おるさが』のがっきょくせいさくはやりやすかったですね。 Hiro : Well, in my case, it would be easier to create a song from something with a theme than from nothing. Because really anything (that can provide the base to work from) is okay. So, it was easy to produce the music of “Hortensia Saga" as there are a solid world view and stories already.
佐藤 : 『オルサガ』には“命を継いでいく”というテーマがあります。資料もお渡ししましたが、ここまでのストーリー展開も含めて「テーマとしては少し重いか な?」という部分はこちらも気になっていました。 さとう: 『おるさが』には“いのちをついでいく”というてーまがあります。しりょうもおわたししましたが、ここまでのすとーりーてんかいもふくめて「てーまとしてはすこしおもいかな?」というぶぶんはこちらもきになっていました。 Sato : “Hortensia Saga" has the theme of “inochi o tsuideiku / inheriting/continuing the destiny*“. Although you were handed out the materials, including the story development up to this point, the part of “Is this maybe a little heavy as a theme?”, I’m curious of that one.
* I still can’t quite grasp the concept of “ 命 / inochi”. So, my chosen translation could still be off-the-mark. Kindly please refer to this 命 Kanji explanation. Also an in-depth meaning of “inochi” here by Professor Masahiro Morioka from Waseda University. It will better help you to understand the lyrics at least.
Hiro : 重い……重かったですね(笑)。正直、深すぎて歌詞やメロディにどこまで織り込めるのかなと。1曲じゃ収まらないんじゃ、というくらい。いただいた資 料も何回も読み返しました。 Hiro: おもい……おもかったですね(えみ)。しょうじき、ふかすぎてかしやめろでぃにどこまでおりこめるのかなと。1きょくじゃおさまらないんじゃ、というくらい。いただいたしりょうもなんかいもよみかえしました。 Hiro : Heavy … yup it was heavy (laugh). Honestly, we were like, “How deeply can we incorporate the lyrics and melodies?”. “Can it fit in one song?”, it was like that. I read and reread the material I received many times as well.
佐藤 : かなり悩まれている様子は、僕たちにも伝わってきましたね。 さとう: かなりなやまれているようすは、ぼくたちにもつたわってきましたね。 Sato: It seems like that worried state of mind found its way to us too.
Hiro : いちばん悩んだのは、主人公の気持ちになって詞を書いたほうがいいのか、物語を俯瞰的に見た僕として書いたほうがいいのかという点ですね。結局、俯瞰 的に書くのはプロローグやエピローグの雰囲気になってしまうのかな、ということで主人公に感情移入していくことにしました。マイファスもいろいろなものを 継いできたバンドですし、自分たちと重ね合わせたりしながら作り上げていきました。なので、かなり時間がかかってしまって(笑)。 Hiro: いちばんなやんだのは、しゅじんこうのきもちになってことばをかいたほうがいいのか、ものがたりをふかんてきにみたぼくとしてかいたほうがいいのかというてんですね。けっきょく、ふかんてきにかくのはぷろろーぐやえぴろーぐのふんいきになってしまうのかな、ということでしゅじんこうにかんじょういにゅうしていくことにしました。まいふぁすもいろいろなものをついできたばんどですし、じぶんたちとかさねあわせたりしながらつくりあげていきました。なので、かなりじかんがかかってしまって(えみ)。 Hiro : The thing I was concerned the most was whether it was better to write the lyrics as the hero’s feelings, or whether I should write it as a bird’s eye view of the story. In the end, writing in bird’s eye view kind of turned into an atmosphere of prologue and epilogue, so by such a thing … that I decided to emphatize* with the hero. MY FIRST STORY is also a band that has continued on with various things, and I created it while overlapping with those. So because of that, it took quite some time (laugh).

佐藤 : ギリギリだったので心配したのですが、あがってきたものを一読して「これはスゴイものを作っていただいたな」と思いました。加えて、レコーディングの 様子にも驚かされましたね。一小節づつ時間をか��て調整していくというやり方、あれは一般的な手法なのでしょうか? さとう: ぎりぎりだったのでしんぱいしたのですが、あがってきたものをいちどくして「これはすごいものをつくっていただいたな」とおもいました。くわえて、れこーでぃんぐのようすにもおどろかされましたね。いち��ょうせつづつじかんをかけてちょうせいしていくというやりかた、あれはいっぱんてきなしゅほうなのでしょうか? Sato : Though you were worried because it was barely enough time (for recording), but then I perused through the stuff you got up for and thought that “You made this awesome thing!“. At the same time, I was surprised by the state of the recording. How do you adjust over each bar, is that a common technique?
Hiro : いえ、一般的ではないですね。ふつうは通して何回か歌って、そのなかからいいところをつまんで行くことが多いと思います。僕は、タイアップだったり明 確なテーマがあったりするときは、一小節づつ手を入れながら作っていく方が合うと思います。ゲームやアニメといった非日常的なものはとくにそうですね。そ れから、今回はすばらしい映像も作っていただいて、そこに曲が乗ることも決まっていたので、映像に合わせる意味でも細かくやっていきました。 Hiro: いえ、いっぱんてきではないですね。ふつうはとおしてなんかいかうたって、そのなかからいいところをつまんでいくことがおおいとおもいます。ぼくは、たいあっぷだったりあきらなてーまがあったりするときは、いちしょうせつづつしゅをいれながらつくっていくほうがあうとおもいます。げーむやあにめといったひにちじょうてきなものはとくにそうですね。それから、こんかいはすばらしいえいぞうもつくっていただいて、そこにきょくがのることもきまっていたので、えいぞうにあわせるいみでもこまかくやっていきました。 Hiro : No, it is not common. Usually I sometimes go through and sing a few times, I think that it is often that you pick up a good place from among those. As for me, when I’m doing a tie-up or when there is a clear theme, I think that it is more suitable to touch up each bar while you’re making it. Especially with unusual things such as games and animation. Also, this time we had made a wonderful video, and since we had decided to put a song on that as well, so we went with doing it in fine details in the sense that it matches the video too.
佐藤 : こんなに丁寧に時間を掛けて作っていくものなんだな、と本当に驚きました。レコーディングも8時間ほどスタジオを押さえていただいていたのですが、ま さかフルで使うことになるとは……。 さとう: こんなにていねいにじかんをかけてつくっていくものなんだな、とほんとうにおどろきました。れこーでぃんぐも8じかんほどすたじおをおさえていただいていたのですが、まさかふるでつかうことになるとは……。 Sato : I was really surprised that the time you took was spent so carefully. Hiro : 自分でひとつテーマを掲げて作るときはエンジニアさんとしか話さないということもありますが、主題が自分ではない場合はディスカッションやコミュニ ケーションを重視しますね。今回であれば『オルサガ』を作っている方となんでもいいので色々と話して、そこから制作意図にしっかり合わせたいということで すね。それから、畑が違うものどうしの共同作業になるので、なんでも言いやすい雰囲気作りの面もあります。絶対あると思うんですよね「この歌詞は違うな」 とか「ここの歌いかたはこうしてほしいな」とか。そういうときに、主題を作った人たちからちゃんと意見を言ってもらえたほうが、いいものができますから。 Hiro: じぶんでひとつてーまをかかげてつくるときはえんじにあさんとしかはなさないということもありますが、しゅだいがじぶんではないばあいはでぃすかっしょんやこみゅにけーしょんをじゅうししますね。こんかいであれば『おるさが』をつくっているほうとなんでもいいのでいろいろとはなして、そこからせいさくいとにしっかりあわせたいということですね。それから、はたけがちがうものどうしのきょうどうさぎょうになるので、なんでもいいやすいふんいきづくりのめんもあります。ぜったいあるとおもうんですよね「このかしはちがうな」とか「ここのうたいかたはこうしてほしいな」とか。そういうときに、しゅだいをつくったひとたちからちゃんといけんをいってもらえたほうが、いいものができますから。 Hiro : Sometimes we talk only with the engineers when we create a theme by ourselves, but we focus on discussions and communication if the subject is not by ourselves. This time, with anyone who makes “Hortensia Saga”, anything at all, we do a lot of talking (with them) and from there we want to tightly match to the design intention of the production, so to speak. And then, through the team work of different specialized fields, there would also be an aspect of having the atmosphere where it is easy to say anything. The ship had been overturned, he lay where the floor once was with his two parts connected only by three slender cords.
「よく切れなかったわね」 “I guess he didn’t break you after all.” 驚きと感心をまじえた声で、エリザベスは言った。 Elizabeth remarked, with a mixture of surprise and admiration. 「運がよかったのでしょう」 “Perhaps I should consider myself lucky.” The head suggested. 首だけのデイヴィッドが言った。巨大な宇宙船の機体の一片は、地面に突き刺すように墜落衝突して、転倒したのだ。このブリッジも床があちらこちらにひっくり返ったり衝撃が何度も伝わってきたりと、中にいた者たちは相当振りまわされたはずだ。現にウェイランドやフォードの死体は、通路の外まで飛ばされていた。それだえの衝撃に、三本の細かいコードは耐えたのだ。 When the ship crash-landed, the collision was strong enough to penetrate the ground beneath it. Tian Yu SGZ Draft (With ZZTJ Mentions)
The SGZ text is mine. ZZTJ translations are from Rafe de Crespigny’s To Establish Peace and from Achilles Fang’s Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms, with very minor edits by me. Some of Fang’s translations of SGZ passages are also included. The excerpt from the Zuo Commentary uses James Legge’s translation.
田豫字国让,渔阳雍奴人也。刘备之奔公孙瓚也,豫时年少,自讬於备,备甚奇之。备为豫州刺史,豫以母老求归,备涕泣与别,曰:“恨不与君共成大事也。”
Tian Yu, styled Guorang, was a native of Yongnu in Yuyang. When Liu Bei abandoned Gongsun Zan, Tian Yu was still very young, and he entrusted himself to Liu Bei, who greatly appreciated him. By the time that Liu Bei became Inspector of Yuzhou, Tian Yu asked that he be allowed to return home to look after his aging mother. Liu Bei bade him a tearful farewell, telling him, "I regret that you and I shall not be able to achieve the grand design together."

Gongsun Zan sent Tian Yu to serve as Prefect of Dongzhou. Gongsun Zan's general Wang Men betrayed him, leading more than ten thousand men on behalf of Yuan Shao to come attack Dongzhou. Many people in the city, frightened, wished to surrender. Tian Yu mounted the walls of the city and said to Wang Men, "For you to have abandoned Master Gongsun Zan, who treated you so well, might have been due to circumstances beyond your control. But since you now return, playing the part of a bandit, I know that you are nothing more than a rebel. 'Though a man have only knowledge enough to carry a pitcher, as he is in charge of it, he must not lend it to another.' I have such a charge. So why not bring on your attack?" Wang Ren, ashamed, led his troops away.

Although Gongsun Zan knew of Tian Yu's abilities and insights, he was unable to properly employ him. After Gongsun Zan was defeated, Xianyu Fu was acclaimed by the people of the state, and he took over the affairs of the commandary as Administrator. He was good friends with Tian Yu, and so employed him as his Chief Clerk. It was during this time that heroes were rising up and joining together, and Xianyu Fu was unsure whom he should follow. Tian Yu said to him, "In the end, the one who will pacify the realm will definitely be Master Cao Cao. We should hasten to submit to his authority, to prevent any future disaster." Xianyu Fu followed his suggestion, and thus received use and found favor. Cao Cao summoned Tian Yu and appointed him as an army advisor to the Prime Minister's office. He later served as Prefect of Yingyin and of Langling, and then became Administrator of Yiyang. In all these roles, he was an adept administrator.
漁陽田豫說太守鮮于輔曰:〈輔旣斬鄒丹,遂領漁陽太守。〉「曹氏奉天子以令諸侯,終能定天下,宜早從之。」輔乃率其衆以奉王命。詔以輔爲建忠將軍,都督幽州六郡。(ZZTJ 63, 199.1)
Tian Yu of Yuyang said to his Grand Administrator Xianyu Fu, "Cao Cao supports the Son of Heaven and so commands the lords. In the end he will settle the empire. You should be among the first to join him." So Xianyu Fu and all his associates sent messages of allegiance. An edict appointed him General Who Establishes Loyalty and Chief Controller of six commanderies in You province.

鄢陵侯彰征代郡,以豫为相。军次易北,虏伏骑击之,军人扰乱,莫知所为。豫因地形,回车结圜陈,弓弩持满於内,疑兵塞其隙。胡不能进,散去。追击,大破之,遂前平代,皆豫策也。
When the Marquis of Yanling, Cao Zhang, campaigned in Dai commandary, he employed Tian Yu as his Chancellor there. The army advanced north easily at first, until they were ambushed by tribal cavalry and attacked. The army was thrown into confusion, with no one knowing what to do. Tian Yu, analyzing the terrain they were on, had all the carts form up into a defensive circle array; the interior was filled with archers and crossbowmen, while he used soldiers to guard the choke points in the array and mislead the enemy. The tribesmen could find no way to advance against them, and they scattered and fled. The army pursued and attacked them, and greatly routed them. Dai was thus pacified, all thanks to Tian Yu's strategies.
迁南阳太守。先时,郡人侯音反,众数千人在山中为群盗,大为郡患。前太守收其党与五百餘人,表奏皆当死。豫悉见诸系囚,慰谕,开其自新之路,一时破械遣之。诸囚皆叩头,原自效,即相告语,群贼一朝解散,郡内清静。具以状上,太祖善之。
Tian Yu was transferred to be Administrator of Nanyang. Before his assignment there, a man from that commandary, Hou Yin, had started a rebellion, and he had a band of several thousand men among the hills acting as bandits. He was a great scourge upon the commandary. The previous Administrator had arrested his partisans and more than five hundred people, and had submitted a petition claiming that they all deserved death. Tian Yu went to visit all of the prisoners. He consoled and instructed them, showing them how they might set out on new paths in life. Then he broke their fetters and let them go. All of the prisoners kowtowed before him, each of them willingly following his example. They went and told everyone they knew of what had happened. Within a short time, the rebels broke up and melted away, and peace was restored to the commandary. When Tian Yu's method for resolving the situation became generally known, Cao Cao appreciated him.
文帝初,北狄强盛,侵扰边塞,乃使豫持节护乌丸校尉,牵招、解俊并护鲜卑。自高柳以东,濊貊以西,鲜卑数十部,比能、弥加、素利割地统御,各有分界;乃共要誓,皆不得以马与中国市。豫以戎狄为一,非中国之利,乃先构离之,使自为雠敌,互相攻伐。素利违盟,出马千匹与官,为比能所攻,求救於豫。豫恐遂相兼并,为害滋深,宜救善讨恶,示信众狄。单将锐卒,深入虏庭,胡人众多,钞军前后,断截归路。豫乃进军,去虏十餘里结屯营,多聚牛马粪然之,从他道引去。胡见烟火不绝,以为尚在,去,行数十里乃知之。追豫到马城,围之十重,豫密严,使司马建旌旗,鸣鼓吹,将步骑从南门出,胡人皆属目往赴之。
At the beginning of Cao Pi's reign, the northern tribes had grown very powerful, and they raided the border regions. So Tian Yu was appointed as Credential Bearer and Colonel Who Protects The Wuhuan, while Qian Zhao and Xie Jun were both commissioned as Colonels Who Protect The Xianbei. Within the area east of Gaoliu and west of the Yemaek people, there were several tens of Xianbei groups. Kebineng, Mijia, and Suli divided the land and led and guarded their own sections, each one having his own domain.
(Achilles Fang’s translation: In the beginning of Cao Pi's reign, the Northern Di were powerful; they invaded and disturbed the frontiers. He then conferred the Tally on Tian Yu and appointed him to be Protector of the Wuwan (Wuwan jiaoyu), Qian Zhao and Xie Jun being appointed to be Protector of the Xianbei (hu Xianbei [jiaoyu]). From the east of Gaoliu to the west of the last of the Weimo, there were several tens of the Xianbei tribes. Kebineng, Mijia and Suli divided the territory among themselves, each ruling over his own domain.)
The tribes all swore an oath together, vowing not to sell their horses to the markets of the Middle Kingdom. Tian Yu felt that if the tribes were united, that would not be of any benefit to the Middle Kingdom. So he sowed discord among them, making them enemies of one another, until the tribes broke out into civil warfare. Suli broke the oath, and sent a thousand horses to the imperial government. He was attacked by Kebineng, so he begged for aid from Tian Yu. Tian Yu, concerned that the tribes might annex each other, and so deepen the threat, felt that he should act to assist the good and punish the evil, as a display of trust to all the tribes. So he had a lone commander with keen troops penetrate deep into the enemy camp. The tribesmen were numerous, and all around the imperial soldiers, so they cut their way out and returned to the road.
Then Tian Yu advanced with his army. He halted more than ten li from the tribesmen and set up his camp, where he gathered great stores of cow and horse dung and lit it, having had it strewn along the road between them. When the tribesmen saw the unending smoke and fire, they believed that their enemy was nearly upon them, and they fled for several tens of li before they realized the truth. They then pursued Tian Yu to Macheng, where they laid a heavy siege on the city. Tian Yu secretly prepared his soldiers. He sent his marshals to mount flags and banners and beat the drums. He sent some of his infantry and cavalry out through the southern gate, and the tribesmen all had their attention focused on this group.
豫将精锐自北门出,鼓譟而起,两头俱发,出虏不意,虏众散乱,皆弃弓马步走,追讨二十餘里,僵尸蔽地。又乌丸王骨进桀黠不恭,豫因出塞案行,单将麾下百餘骑入进部。进逆拜,遂使左右斩进,显其罪恶以令众。众皆怖慴不敢动,便以进弟代进。自是胡人破胆,威震沙漠。山贼高艾,众数千人,寇钞,为幽、冀害,豫诱使鲜卑素利部斩艾,传首京都。封豫长乐亭侯。为校尉九年,其御夷狄,恆摧抑兼并,乖散强猾。凡逋亡奸宄,为胡作计不利官者,豫皆构刺搅离,使凶邪之谋不遂,聚居之类不安。事业未究,而幽州刺史王雄支党欲令雄领乌丸校尉,毁豫乱边,为国生事。遂转豫为汝南太守,加殄夷将军。
Then Tian Yu himself led his elite troops out of the north gate, where they raised a great clamor. Both groups then advanced as one, catching the tribesmen off guard. The enemy host scattered in confusion, abandoning their bows and horses to flee on foot. Tian Yu pursued them for more than twenty li, and their corpses littered the ground.
The Wuhuan King, Qujin, was a cruel and crafty man, lacking in respect. Because of that, Tian Yu went forth beyond the borders to deal with his infamy. He went with over a hundred riders and entered Qujin's camp. Qujin refused to pay his respects, so Tian Yu sent his followers to behead Qujin, and announce his crimes and infamies to the crowd. The crowd, fearful and awed, dared not make a move. Tian Yu had Qujin's younger brother replace him. From then on, the resolve of the tribes was broken, and Tian Yu's might was felt throughout the deserts.
The mountain bandit Gao Ai had a band of several tens of thousands; they plundered Youzhou and Jizhou. Tian Yu inveigled Suli's group into executing Gao Ai, and had his head sent to the capital. Tian Yu was appointed as Marquis of Changleting.
Tian Yu served in his post as Colonel for nine years, during which time he restrained the tribes, kept them from consolidating their power, and exploited their divisions through strength and cunning. He did away with evil-doers, and whenever there were tribes whose plans ran counter to the interests of the dynasty, Tian Yu always stirred up trouble against them and kept them divided. He ensured that wild schemes did not come to fruition, and kept the gathered groups from knowing peace.
But before the full effects could be realized, the supporters of the Inspector of Youzhou, Wang Xiong, wanted to have Wang Xiong take over the role of Colonel Who Leads The Wuhuan. So they defamed Tian Yu as having caused instability on the borders, and having brought about problems for the state. Tian Yu was transferred to be Administrator of Runan, and appointed as General Who Exterminates Barbarians.
(Achilles Fang’s translation: ...But the followers of Wang Xiong, the Inspector of Yuzhou, wished to have Wang Xiong appointed hu Wuwan jiaoyu, so they slandered Tian Yu, saying he had been making trouble for the state by causing disturbances on the frontiers. 軻比能部落近塞,中國人多亡叛歸之;素利等在遼西、右北平、漁陽塞外,道遠,故不爲邊患。帝以平虜校尉牽招爲護鮮卑校尉,南陽太守田豫爲護烏桓校尉,使鎭撫之。(ZZTJ 69, 221.25)
Kebineng’s tribe being near the imperial frontier, a large number of subjects deserted their country and went over to him. Suli and the others were west of the Liao (river), beyond the frontiers of Youbeiping and Yuyang; the way being far, they did not cause any trouble for the frontier regions. Cao Pi appointed the Colonel Who Pacificies Insurgents, Qian Zhao, to be Colonel Who Protects The Xianbei, and the Administrator of Nanyang, Tian Yu, to be Colonel Who Protects the Wuhuan; they were to keep them [Xianbei and Wuhuan respectively] under protection and pacified.
太和末,公孙渊以辽东叛,帝欲征之而难其人,中领军杨暨举豫应选。〈臣松之案:暨字休先,荥阳人,事见刘晔传。暨子肇,晋荆州刺史。山涛启事称肇有才能。肇子潭字道元,次歆字公嗣,潭子彧字长文,次经字仲武,皆见潘岳集。〉乃使豫以本官督青州诸军,假节,往讨之。会吴贼遣使与��相结,帝以贼众多,又以渡海,诏豫使罢军。豫度贼船垂还,岁晚风急,必畏漂浪,东随无岸,当赴成山。成山无藏船之处,辄便循海,案行地势,及诸山岛,徼截险要,列兵屯守。自入成山,登汉武之观。贼还,果遇恶风,船皆触山沈没,波荡著岸,无所蒙窜,尽虏其众。初,诸将皆笑於空地待贼,及贼破,竞欲与谋,求入海钩取浪船。豫惧穷虏死战,皆不听。初,豫以太守督青州,青州刺史程喜内怀不服,军事之际,多相违错。喜知帝宝爱明珠,乃密上:“豫虽有战功而禁令宽弛,所得器仗珠金甚多,放散皆不纳官。”由是功不见列。
At the end of the Taihe era (233), Gongsun Yuan rebelled in Liaodong. Cao Rui wished to campaign against him, but had difficulty finding the right man for the job. The General Who Leads The Army of the Center, Yang Ji, recommended that Tian Yu be sent. So Tian Yu was dispatched from his current office to take charge of the armies of Qingzhou, appointed as Credential Holder, and sent to campaign against Gongsun Yuan. At that time, Wu dispatched envoys to make an alliance with Gongsun Yuan. As the enemy was very numerous, and they would have to cross the sea, Cao Rui recalled Tian Yu and cancelled his assignment.
(Your servant Pei Songzhi remarks: The Yang Ji mentioned here, styled Xiuxian, was a native of Xingyang; he is mentioned more in the Biography of Liu Ye. Yang Ji had a son, Yang Zhao, who was Jin's Inspector of Jingzhou. When Shan Tao handled affairs, he considered Yang Zhao to have great talent and ability. Yang Zhao had one son, Yang Tan, styled Daoyuan, and another son, Yang Xin, styled Gongci. Yang Tan had one son, Yang Yu, styled Changwen, and another son, Yang Jing, styled Zhongwu. All of them are mentioned in the writings of Pan Yue.)
Tian Yu considered that the boats of the Wu envoys would return soon. Near the end of the year, the winds were especially fierce, and there was certainly the danger that they could cause the boats to scatter. With no shore to the east to follow along, the boats would have to gather at Mount Cheng. But there was no place at Mount Cheng for the boats to shelter: they would be at the mercy of the ocean current. So Tian Yu scouted out the area, studying the various hills and islets there. He discovered the critical points to hold, and sent soldiers to each place to guard them. Then he went to Mount Cheng, and mounted Hanwu to observe what would happen. When the enemy envoys were returning from Liaodong, as expected, they encountered an evil wind, and their boats either sank or ran aground at the mountain. With no place to hide or run to, all of them were taken prisoner. Before it had happened, the generals had all laughed at this plan for stationing troops at a deserted place to await the enemy. After the enemy had been routed, plotting among themselves, they begged to be allowed to go into the sea to rescue the sunken boats. Tian Yu feared that the captives, faced with such extremes, would risk death in battle, so he refused to allow it.
Since Tian Yu, although only an Administrator, had been given military command over Qingzhou, the Inspector of Qingzhou, Cheng Xi, resented it. He had a mind not to cooperate with Tian Yu, and in handling military matters he did many contrary or mistaken things. Cheng Xi knew that Cao Rui greatly treasured fine jewels and pearls. So after the battle, he sent a secret report, stating, "Although Tian Yu has made an achievement of this battle, he has been lax in discipline. He acquired a great number of equipment, weapons, pearls, and gold, but he has distributed it away instead of handing it over to the government." So Tian Yu's achievement was tarnished.
(Achilles Fang’s translation: At the end of the Taihe period, Gongsun Yuan had revolted in Liaodong. Cao Rui wished to send an expedition against him, but could not find a satisfactory man for it. The zhonglingjun Yang Ji recommended Tian Yu, while retaining his former office, to direct the various troops of Qingzhou, and lent him the Tally. In this capacity, he proceeded to make a campaign against Gongsun Yuan. At that time the Wu rebels sent envoys to join Gongsun Yuan. Since the rebels were superior in number and Tian Yu had to cross the sea besides, Cao Rui commanded Tian Yu to disband the troops…
When they were returning, the rebels, as he had anticipated, met with a strong wind. Their ships all ran against the mountains and sank beneath the waves, and those who reached coast could not escape him. He captured all their forces. At first his generals all laughed at him for waiting for the rebels in empty places. But when the rebels were defeated, they were eager to enter the sea and catch the ships from the waves with hooks. Fearing that the desperate enemy would fight to the death, Tian Yu did not permit this...)
公孫淵陰懷貳心,數與吳通。帝使汝南太守田豫督青州諸軍自海道,幽州刺史王雄自陸道討之,〈海道自東萊浮海,陸道自遼西渡遼水。〉...豫等往皆無功,詔令罷軍。 豫以吳使周賀等垂還,歲晚風急,必畏漂浪,東道無岸,當赴成山,成山無藏船之處,遂輒以兵屯據成山。賀等還至成山,〈班《志》:成山在東萊郡不夜縣;後漢省不夜縣。《括地志》:成山在萊州文登縣西北百九十里。〉遇風,豫勒兵擊賀等,斬之。(ZZTJ 72, 232.9)
Gongsun Yuan secretly harbored disloyalty to Wei and made frequent contacts with Wu. Cao Rui had Tian Yu, the Administrator of Runan, proceed against him by sea, commanding the various troops of Qingzhou, and had Wang Xiong, Governor of Yu-zhou, proceed by land to make a campaign against him... Tian Yu and his men went, but did not achieve anything, and Cao Rui commanded them to disband the troops.
Tian Yu calculated that the Wu envoys, Zhou He and the others, would soon be returning. The year being at its end, the wind would blow fiercely, so that they would surely be in fear of being blown adrift; and as there was no coast to the east, they would be certain to proceed to Chengshan. And at Chengshan there was no place where ships could be harbored in safety. So he stationed his troops at Chengshan. When Zhou He and his men reached Chengshan on their return journey, they encountered wind; Tian Yu commanded his troops to attack Zhou He and his men, whom they killed.
(Hu Sanxing commented: The routes of invasion against Gongsun Yuan were for the water route to be from Donglai, crossing the sea, and for the land route to be from Liaodong, crossing the Liao River.
Ban's Annotations states, "Mount Cheng is in Buye County in Donglai commandary; Later Han abolished Buye County." The Comprehensive Gazetteer states, "Mount Cheng is a hundred and ninety li northwest of Wendeng County in Laizhou.")
后孙权号十万众攻新城,征东将军满宠欲率诸军救之。豫曰:“贼悉众大举,非徒投射小利,欲质新城以致大军耳。宜听使攻城,挫其锐气,不当与争锋也。城不可拔,众必罢怠;罢怠然后击之,可大克也。若贼见计,必不攻城,势将自走。若便进兵,適入其计。又大军相向,当使难知,不当使自画也。”豫辄上状,天子从之。会贼遁走。后吴复来寇,豫往拒之,贼即退。诸军夜惊,云:“贼复来!”豫卧不起,令众“敢动者斩”。有顷,竟无贼。
Later on, Sun Quan amassed an army of a hundred thousand to attack Xincheng. The General Who Conquers The East, Man Chong, wished to lead the Cao-Wei armies to rescue Xincheng. Tian Yu said, "The enemy has undertaken this grand movement for more than to throw themselves against a city for little profit. They wish to use Xincheng as a lure for our army. We should wait and listen for how their attack on the city goes. Their zeal will diminish, and then they will be in no shape for fighting. When they cannot take the city, they will be sure to become idle; once they are idle, then we may attack them, and we can achieve great success. And if the enemy sees through our plan, they will certainly not attack the city, and will withdraw of their own accord. But if we advance, that will just be falling into their trap. And when our armies do advance, we should keep the enemy from knowing, and not let them become aware." Tian Yu having thus explained the situation, Cao Rui followed his advice. Soon, the Wu army withdrew.
Later, Wu again came to invade. Tian Yu went forth to oppose them, so the Wu army withdrew. During the night, the Cao-Wei armies panicked, saying, "The enemy is coming back!" Tian Yu was lying down and did not get up; he simply gave the order, "Anyone who dares to move will be executed." Within a short while, there was no sign of the enemy.
(Achilles Fang’s translation: ...Tian Yu immediately memorialized the throne, and Cao Rui followed him. It turned out that the rebels took to flight.
Later on, the Wu made another invasion. Tian Yu went forth to resist them, and the rebels thereupon retreated. His various troops were alarmed in the night, saying that the rebels were coming again. Tian Yu kept to his bed and did not get up, ordering that any of the troops making a stir would be put to death. After a while, it turned out that no rebels came.)
六月,滿寵欲率諸軍救新城,殄夷將軍田豫曰:〈殄夷將軍,蓋魏所置,然不在沈約《志》所謂四十號將軍之數。〉「賊悉衆大舉,非圖小利,欲質新城以致大軍耳。宜聽使攻城,挫其銳氣,不當與爭鋒也。城不可拔,衆必罷怠;罷怠然後擊之,可大克也。若賊見計,〈言窺見吾所以待敵之計也。〉必不攻城,勢將自走。若便進兵,適入其計矣。」(ZZTJ 72, 234.7)
In the sixth month (July 14 - Aug. 12), Man Chong wished to lead his various troops to reinforce the New City of Hefei. The zhenyi jiangjun Tian Yu said, "The rebels have mobilized their entire forces; they are planning for no small profit, but are using the New City as a bait for attracting our main forces. We ought to let them attack the City and dissipate their initial vigor; we should not fight them while their strength is rampant. Failing to take the City, their troops will be fatigued and off guard; we are sure to win a great victory. If the rebels become aware of our scheme, they will be forced to withdraw. To advance our troops at this point will be only to fall into their trap. Furthermore, when our forces advance toward them, we should do it so that it will be difficult for the advance to be known. We should not allow them to take appropriate measures."
(Hu Sanxing commented: The title General Who Exterminates Barbarians was created by Cao-Wei, although it does not appear listed among the forty General titles in Shen Yue's Annotations.
Tian Yu meant, if Wu was able to detect their plan to await the enemy forces.)
景初末,增邑三百,并前五百户。正始初,迁使持节护匈奴中郎将,加振威将军,领并州刺史。外胡闻其威名,相率来献。州界宁肃,百姓怀之。徵为卫尉。屡乞逊位,太傅司马宣王以为豫克壮,书喻未听。豫书答曰:“年过七十而以居位,譬犹钟鸣漏尽而夜行不休,是罪人也。”遂固称疾笃。��太中大夫,食卿禄。年八十二薨。子彭祖嗣。〈魏略曰:豫罢官归,居魏县。会汝南遣健步诣征北,感豫宿恩,过拜之。豫为杀鸡炊黍,送诣至陌头,谓之曰:“罢老,苦汝来过。无能有益,若何?”健步愍其贫羸,流涕而去,还为故吏民说之。汝南为具资数千匹,遣人饷豫,豫一不受。会病亡,戒其妻子曰:“葬我必於西门豹边。”妻之难之,言:“西门豹古之神人,那可葬於其边乎?”豫言:“豹所履行与我敌等耳,使死而有灵,必与我善。”妻子从之。汝南闻其死也,悲之,既为画像,又就为立碑铭。〉
At the end of the Jingchu era (239), Tian Yu's fief was increased by three hundred villages, in addition to his earlier fief of five hundred households. At the beginning of the Zhengshi era (240), he was transferred to be Commissioner Bearing Credentials and General of the Household Gentlemen Who Protects The Xiongnu. He was further promoted to General Who Displays Might, and appointed as acting Inspector of Bingzhou. When the foreign tribes heard of his power and reputation, they all came to offer tribute. The provincial domain was peaceful and quiet, and the common people cherished him.
Tian Yu was summoned as Commandant of the Guard. Several times he asked to resign his post. Grand Tutor Sima Yi, valuing Tian Yu's successes, wrote to him to explain why he could not do so. Tian Yu wrote back in response, "I am more than seventy years old, yet you would have me take up this post. That would be like sounding the bell when it is not the hour, or traveling at night instead of sleeping. It is criminal." In the end, he resigned his post pleading illness. He was conferred the title of Grand Counselor of the Palace, and given a high minister's pension.
At the age of eighty-two, he passed away. His son Tian Pengzu inherited his positions.
(The Weilue states, "When Tian Yu resigned his offices and retired, he resided in Wei County. At that time, Runan dispatched Jian Bu on a campaign north. In order to repay Tian Yu's former grace towards him, Jian Bu came to call on him. Tian Yu killed a chicken and cooked some millet for him, and escorted him as far as the road side. Tian Yu said to him, ‘I am just an old retired fellow, and yet you troubled yourself to come see me. I can do nothing good for you; why go to the trouble?’ Jian Bu felt sympathy for Tian Yu, because he was now poor and lean. He left him with tears in his eyes, and went to tell the local officials about the matter. Runan had several thousand items of wares, and they sent someone to bring them to Tian Yu to help sustain him, but Tian Yu would not accept any of it.

If anything unusual happens after I die, it must be pleased with me.’ So his wife and son did as he asked. When Runan heard that Tian Yu had died, there was great sorrow for him. They made an image of him, and raised a stele for him as well.")

Tian Yu was honest, thrifty, and simple. All of the items and rewards he was given, he distributed among his officers and men. Whenever the tribes sent him gifts, he had them noted and stored with the government, and never kept them for his family. In fact, his family was often poor and lacking. Even among outstanding people, Tian Yu was especially honored.
In the sixth year of Jiaping (254), an edict was sent out commending him, and rewarding his family with money and grain. This is further mentioned in the Biography of Xu Miao.
(The Weilue states, "The Xianbei leaders, Suli and others, came many times as guests to see Tian Yu. They often presented him with cows and horses as gifts, but Tian Yu always handed these over to the government.
“One tribesman believed that in order to make Tian Yu show his true colors, it would be better to offer him gold. So he secretly carried with him thirty catties of gold, and he said to Tian Yu, ‘You should send away your attendants; I wish to speak with you.’ Once Tian Yu did so, the tribesman knelt and said to him, ‘Lord, I have seen that you are a poor man, and that was why before, when you were offered cows and horses, you always gave them over to the government. But now I secretly present you with this, so that you may use it for your family's sake.’ Tian Yu opened his sleeves and took the gold, and treated the tribesman with courtesy.
“After the tribesman had left, Tian Yu gave all the gold away, and thus the story spread. An imperial edict was issued commending him, stating, ‘In former times, Wei Jiang through peaceful means won over the Rong tribes. Now, you have lifted your sleeves and accepted the tribes' gold. We deeply commend you.’ So Tian Yu was awarded with five hundred bolts of silk. When Tian Yu received the silk, he divided it and stored half in a small office. When the tribesman later returned, he split that silk with him.")
(Wei Jiang is mentioned in the Zuo Commentary to the Spring and Autumn Annals: “At this time the marquis of Jin was fond of hunting, and therefore Wei Jiang took the opportunity to touch on the subject. The marquis then said, ‘Well then, will it not be our best plan to be on good terms with the Rong?’ Wei Jiang replied, ‘To be on good terms with the Rong has five advantages. The Rong and Di are continually changing their residence, and are fond of exchanging land for goods. Their lands can be purchased;—this is the first advantage. Our borders will not be kept in apprehension. The people can labour on their fields, and the husbandmen complete their toils;—this is the second. When the Rong and Di serve Jin, our neighbours all round will be terrified, and the States will be awed and cherish our friendship;—this is the third. Tranquillizing the Rong by our goodness, our armies will not be toiled, and weapons will not be broken;—this is the fourth. Taking warning from the sovereign Yi, and using only measures of virtue, the remote will come to us, and the near will be at rest;—this is the fifth.” The marquis was pleased, and sent Wei Jiang to make a covenant with all the Rong. He also attended to the business of the people, and hunted [only] at the proper seasons. (Xiang 4.7)”)

Chen Shou’s commentary: Tian Yu was blameless and pure in life and residence, disciplined, calculating, perceptive, and practiced. Alas that Tian Yu's position never rose higher than a small province, and Qian Zhao ultimately commanded no more than a commandary; full use of their talents was never realized.

[I’ve been holding back on this one because I don’t have access to the manual to figure out the horrible Term Memory/”memory word” snarl... but this is the best I can do for now. I many come back to fix things later on. The terminology is confusing enough without localization errors, since apparently we really needed the English words FIRST, ORIGINAL, and PRIMARY to mean three separate things]
SILENT(サイレント)
精神寄生体。古くは「悪魔」「悪霊」などと呼ばれていた闇の存在。だがそれが人や動物の精神に感染し伝染する精神体であることが判明し静かなる恐怖としてSILENT=サイレントと名づけられた。サイレントは人の思念の奥深くに侵入し、最終的には
その人の意識を乗っ取る。サイレント自体はいくつもの種類が確認されており、人の精神に巣食うということは同じだが感染方法、感染された人間に及ぼす精神変容などはサイレントによってさまざまである。

Mind parasite. The dark- ness once called ”evil spirits” & ”demons.” It was discovered to be parasitic and was named Silent, being a ”quiet terror”. Silent enters into the Shinen of
living beings & finally hijacks their minds. Several types exist, and all eat at the mind, but effects and infection methods vary.
SILENT A [mental/spiritual] parasite. Creatures of darkness once called “devils” or “demons”. But since they’ve been identified as infections that spread through the spirits of people or animals, a “quiet terror”, they’ve been termed Silent. Silent burrows deep into people’s Thoughts, and ultimately...
...takes over their consciousness. Many different types of Silent have been identified. All of them nest within a person’s spirit, but methods and the change they exert on a person’s spirit are as numerous and varied as the Silent themselves.
FIRST
サイレントに1次感染した人間を指してFIRST(ファースト)と呼ぶ。それに順じ2次、3次感染した者は、SECOND、THIRDと呼ばれる。2次、3次感染した者は、サイレントの一部が感染することに対してファーストは本体そのものが感染していることが特徴である。
本体が感染することから、その感染力などはセカンドなどに比べ、格段に大きい。

The 1st person to be infected by Silent. The next in line are called 2nd & 3rd. 2nd & up are only infected partly by Silent, whereas 1st is infected completely. Because of this, compa-
red to 2nd & 3rd, 1st is infected much more strongly.
FIRST
The first person to be infected by a Silent is termed the FIRST. The next, numbers 2 and 3 to be infected, are called the SECOND and THIRD in that order. Infectees 2 and 3 are infected by part of the Silent, while the FIRST is infected by the body itself.
Because they are infected by the main body, the [FIRST’s] infectivity and so on are much greater than that of the SECOND and those following.
オリジナル
サイレント本体を指してORIGINAL(オリジナル)と呼ばれる。オリジナルに感染した者は、他者に対して、思念誘導や思念操作することが可能である。そして思念への影響を通じて感染させる。
その時に、感染した者はオリジナルの一部が入りこむ形になり、感染者の プライマリィの侵食を始める。本体であるオリジナルと、オリジナルの一部を総称して、サイレントと呼称する。
ORIGINAL
The Original strain of Silent. Those infected by the Original have the power to change & con- trol others’ Shinen, infecting them as well.
Then the infected patients enter a part of Original and primary corrosion begins. Original and it’s parts are called Silent.
ORIGINAL
The Silent’s main body is termed the ORIGINAL. The person infected by the ORIGINAL can guide and control the Thoughts of others. And through the influence over their Thoughts, [those others] become [vulnerable to] infection.
At that point, the infected person turns part of the ORIGINAL into its penetrating form, and begins corrosion of the infectee’s PRIMARY. Silent is the general name for both the ORIGINAL as main body and parts of that ORIGINAL.
[note: The “primary corrosion” mix-up happened because PRIMARY is defined later on, and it’s written here in katakana instead of romaji, which is a flub on the JP side. However, corroding the PRIMARY is exactly what Silent do, so there’s no mistaking the intention.]
HAZARD
街など、フォートの規定した区域内におけるサイレントに感染した感染者数や、割合を示すときに使用される。HAZARD 50%など。80%を越えた地域は、フォートにより処理が行われる。

心象風景: a scene or view that you’re imagining. I really need to replay the rest of the game, but I’m guessing this is the word for the View you get when peeking around in people’s brains.
The file that contains descriptions of the regular Shinen/Thoughts that you pull out is called “term mem”, so I’m guessing 記憶文字, literally “memory words”, is supposed to be Term Memory.
The file with descriptions of the Shinen/Thoughts that you carry around with you to ask about is called “term imp”, so I’m guessing that was supposed to be Term Impression.
All of this is more stuff probably grabbed from an English dictionary that's really annoying to translate, since everything makes way more sense if they’re called Memory Terms (poke to open up a thought or memory in the moment) and Impression/Imprint Terms (carry around to ask about or Impress/Imprint later on).
Just to make things more fun, you access the terms located in “term imp” by clicking on the “MEMORY” button in-game, and the “term mem” file describes the Shinen you Imprint immediately.]
ETHER(エーテル)
人や動物など、思考を持ち合わせている生き物が持っている思念。(感情や記憶)アツキやナツキといったΣの力を持っている者には、それら思念をビジュアルとして見ることができる。

Shinen (memories & feel- lings) inside living beings such as humans & animals. Σ users like Atsuki & Natsuki can turn them into visual images & view them.
The Thoughts (feelings and memories) possessed by living beings with the capacity to think, like people or animals. Those with Σ power like Atsuki and Natsuki can see those Thoughts as visuals.
ZONE-ETHER(残留思念)
いわゆる残留思念である。人や動物が強い思念を発すると、その場所にこびりついて、一定期間残っている場合がある。残存期間は、思念によって異なるが、特に死の瞬間の思念は強く、長期間その場に留まる。アツキはΣの力によって読み取ることができる。
ZONE-ETHER
Residual Shinen. When living beings have a strong thought, it stays in the area for awhile. Death Shinen lingers for a long time. Atsuki can read it with his Σ.
ZONE-ETHER (Residual Thoughts[/Shinen])
“Residual” Thoughts, so to speak. When a person or animal gives off a powerful Thought, it will remain where they were for a certain amount of time. The time it stays behind will vary according to the Thought, but when someone’s Thought at the moment of their death is an especially strong one, it will remain at the spot for a long time. Atsuki can read these using Σ.
[note: Yes. ETHER is given in Japanese as the English word Ether, but in ZONE-ETHER it’s given as 思念, 'Shinen’. So just remember the simple fact that ETHER is エーテル, which is Shinen, which is Thoughts, which are feelings and memories, and you’ll be fine!]
PRIMARY(精神世界)
深層意識下の世界を指して、PRIMARY-SPACE(プライマリィ・スペース)もしくは単純にプライマリィと呼ぶ。そこには、その人物が昔に体験した記憶、またはトラウマで心の奥そこに隠してしまった思念が存在する。

Each part of Kisaragi has at least one stone statue. They’re said to have been built to seal in demons by a visitor from overseas, who also founded Kisaragi. He worked so hard to make
them that the townspeo- ple warned him. He’d reply with ”If I stop we will all go into eternal darkness”. He continued working on nothing but the statues.

At least one stone statue has been erected in each district of Kisaragi City. Legend states that they were built to seal the area’s demons. A man from foreign lands founded the village called Kisaragi. It’s said that the foreigner built these statues too. But because he built them so quickly, barely sparing time for sleep...
...the villagers were disturbed and warned him [to slow down]. No matter how much they tried to stop him, he kept going, his eyes bloodshot, saying, “If I stop, what awaits us is eternal darkness.” And so, like one possessed, he kept on pouring all his energy into building statues.

Seishin Theory
A theory devised personally by Kisaragi Academy history teacher Takano Reiji. Apparently just about everything can be analyzed based on the land’s “Odo” (according to him). He runs around town every day with a strange machine called an Odo-measuring device.
[note: as noted elsewhere, 静震 is made of characters for “quiet” and “quaking/shaking/trembling”. It’s a pun on the word 精神, seishin, meaning spirit/mind/heart/etc. Something I just noticed is that オドオド, odoodo, is onomatopoeia for trembling or being hesitant, which may be linked to the second character’s meaning (or just coincidence).]

A machine vital to proving Takano Reiji’s theory, Seishin Theory. He built it to measure something called Odo. Apparently each one costs about 5 million yen. The current measuring device is his third one.

LEGENDS: During the reign of Emperor Ichijō (960-1011 CE) lived a nobleman named Fujiwara no Sanekata. One day he got into a quarrel over some gossip started by Fujiwara no Yukinari, and in a rage, Sanekata snatched Yukinari’s hat and threw it away. For his bad temper, Sanekata was demoted and exiled far away to a solitary island in Mutsu province in the northeast. There, Sanekata nursed his resentment towards those back in the court at Kyoto, growing ever more resentful of them. Three years into his exile, he died, with thoughts of vengeance poisoning his heart. When the news of Sanekata’s death reached Kyoto, a strange thing began to happen: every morning, when the servants would place food out for the imperial court to eat at the Seiryōden palace, the nyūnai suzume would swoop in and gobble up all of the food in an instant, and then fly off. No matter how much food was laid out, the sparrow would devour every grain of rice, leaving nothing for the palace inhabitants. It was not long before the court began to grow very scared of this bird. It began destroy all of the crops in the fields, as well, and nobody knew how to stop the sparrow’s attacks.Rumors began to spread that the sparrow could only be the vengeful ghost, or onryō, of Fujiwara no Sanekata, desperate to return and take revenge upon the imperial court.
