And he is my kind of man.

Because I truly believe the show is telling us that people have treated Top solely as a sex object, which is why he has been regulated to tight spaces. He is restricted and limited in movements because he is seen as a sex object in those spaces.

For example, people tend to forget that Top has a job. He is doing it here.

And he is doing it well.

Yet the conversation turns to his sex life.

Which makes sense since the plot of Only Friends balances on these characters' messy sex life, but while everyone else is allowed to have conversations about their lives, Top is always connected to sex.

Which is why Boston only views Top as a sexual being. There is no intimacy involved in Boston and Top's sexual encounters. It's sex. It doesn't need to be comfortable. It doesn't need to be nice. It doesn't even need to be enjoyable. And unlike Nick who has sex with Boston anywhere, Top is boxed in with Boston.

The photo booth - quick, standing, tight space.

The shower - hand job, standing, dark.

The car - cramped, quick, raining.

And all the spaces are public.

Because Top's entire sex life is public for all to speculate and comment on. Nick just didn't get a recording of Boston having sex. Nick captured Top as well, and nobody seems too pressed about that. Top is shoved into tight spaces for sex, yet his entire sex life is fodder for public consumption.

So what must be going through his head when he lays in a spacious bed with a person, not having sex, in a room with a closed door?

To provide something beyond sex.

To not be limited in space or action.

And perhaps be capable of not only keeping some of his life secret, but holding others' secrets as well.

I mentioned this before but Top doesn't appear to have friends. It was common for his parents to be away when he was a child. He is alone at the bar when we first meet him, and the second Mew lets him in, he inserts himself into the group.

Wonder why a guy who has been boxed in with his whole sex life on display would want out of that?

You thought you had seen him around a few times before, but only in passing. He never sat, stayed.

“You know, I rarely see him that kind to customers.”

It caught you by surprise when the blonde spoke up, closing the front cover of his notebook from which you could see a pencil drawing which appeared to be James handing something to someone over his checkout counter. If you weren’t mistaken, it was you.

“W-who? James?”

The man, whose hulking form took up most of the leather chair he was lounging in smiled with a light chuckle.

“Yeah, Bucky. He just puts James on his name tag because he doesn’t like strangers calling him by his nickname.”

You nodded and hummed setting down your things and sitting in a chair next to him, separated only by a small side table.

“And I’m one of those strangers?”

He shrugged and shuffled to lean in towards you, holding out a hand.

“Not if you don’t want to be. I’m Steve, Bucky is my beta, and he’s been telling me stories about some sweet omega coming in here everyday after work. I had to see for myself. I hear you’re quite a charmer.”

You blushed under the compliment. Not only did Bucky talk about you to his partner, who was also a Greek god on Earth, but he seemed….interested?

“I don’t know about that, Steve. But I will say, your beta has been very kind to me. How would I go about not being much of a stranger anymore?”

(this is the final fic i'm talking in this post so you can scroll past this post now if you want to tap out from here)

judging from the tags, this was actually like the last fic i wanted to resort to but i ran out of ozai fics where he's not 1D evil nor his character washed down so i tapped in out of spite

while being intrigued if this contained a serious character arc as i have never even heard of this pair before - it felt so random

so

the character arcs in this work are pretty good actually i think

the plot: some years after the war, zuko asks katara to secretly heal sick ozai in her room in the palace and she agrees just for the sake of "helping"

ozai is a sick tired man from years in prison and no firebending and he doesn't really bother threatening anyone but he still has his attitude

which makes katara absolutely livid but her "for the sake of goodness for goodness" side gets her back to healing him every time / ozai finds that peculiar

over the chapters it's like they are given additional personality building blocks each time they interact

i think the author uses the age gap for ozai as a 'technical upper hand(more experience)' while it also being a careful line for him to tread(possibility of manhandling that he acknowledges) while he still has his core personality of manipulative nature while {consciously} not actually being manipulative

i think this very strange element of love he feels for her in this work is the key point that makes him not hurt her while retaining his personality ?? idk ?? the age gap feels like an additional barrier whenever confronted(a hell lot) by the others while katara is already conflicted about meddling with "the most evil man on earth who well deserves death"

this is the fic that made me think ozai as not an imposing power dude but just more like some adult guy in the right way while him still being the same person

i think what made me stay on this work is that the events feel… colorful? spontaneous? like because their characters are not washed down, it's like the 2 most random cells on earth have colided and the properties that they ALREADY have joints up and create something totally unexpected, just like drawing a random scribble/cell path on a game of life simulator and hitting the play button

and when new properties show up from outside, even more unexpected events happen, but nothing that would feel too unrealistic in terms of character and throw the whole track off

and i guess i like (appreciate?) how the age gap is used in this work to make ozai act like a responsible adult (on her?) at least. that kinda the part that made my heart melt idk. maybe it's just me subconsciously self inserting to her

although, ursa and iroh are really done dirty here (ursa is antagonized as fucking hell and back) so keep that in mind if you've already established headcanon of ~wise unblemishedness~ about their characters delved into heavy analysis of them and appreciate them as adult characters

that and the backstory of ozai is a... little unrealistic but is creative (at least for me) and works pretty well in this fic (i guess)

"unintended" explicit scenes of katara every once in a while so keep that in mind to not eeby too much if you decided to try your toes in it

for me, i have only read up to chapter 20 yet so stuff may get better or suddenly worse

this is a completed work with 58 chapters in total

if ozai had a proper backstory/character regarding his family and personality instead of just "ozai = ultimate villain = ultimate evil (literally, like the summation of all kinds of 'evil')" and got more screentime, then it would have made the ultimate lesson of atla as a series more viable, like the zuko redemption arc, that there is no "true black / white" nor "ultimate good / evil"

he was such an 1D character in the series it's so intriguing when ao3 spices up his character
