Another chaos prompt: You’d marry me if I asked, right? for Rulie pretty please?
And also for @bananakarenina who asked: Ooh, chaos prompt! 51, rulie.
Julie had long since accepted that her family liked her boyfriend almost more than they liked her. Her dad and Reggie had been friends since before they even started dating. Even back then, when Julie was still just nursing a massive crush on him, it had been cute. Carlos thought of all of the band as ‘honourary big brothers’ in that he liked to drag them whenever they were nearby. And of course Reggie had won Tía over with his earnest praise for her cooking and his big puppy dog eyes.
These days, Julie got flack if she came to family events without him. The one time Reggie had been sick and couldn’t come to her Abuela’s 85th birthday, only two people in her extended family hadn’t greeted her with ‘where’s Reggie?’. She’d gone home with three different soup recipes and a lot of conflicting health advice from various (great-)aunts and uncles, second cousins, and even her grandmother herself.
So of course Reggie was invited to family movie night. He had his own spot on the couch (wedged between the arm and Julie, where she could cuddle into his side). They’d watched some zombie apocalypse movie Carlos had picked first, and now some rom-com her aunt had chosen.
“That’s bullshit,” Julie whispered, when the Clearly Not Right For The Heroine starter boyfriend freaked out when she proposed to him, because it was ‘weird for a girl to do it, you have to wait’. “You’d marry me if I asked, right?”
“In a heartbeat,” Reggie agreed, watching as the Heroine went home to her Small Town to heal her broken heart and probably run into a way hotter dude who had like, a dog or a precocious kid or a really nice beard or something.
It had just been an offhand comment.
Which was why Julie was confused when a day later, the congratulations started rolling in. On the family group chat. In her Insta DMs. On her woefully underused Facebook. The band group chat was going insane, and she had no idea what to tell them. She’d managed to calm Flynn down by explaining that nobody was engaged, she had no idea what was going on, and for her to please help her hunt down Carlos just in case this was one of his pranks.
Reggie came back from the grocery run looking confused and flustered. “I just got off the phone with your abuela,” he said. “She was so excited, and wanted to know when the wedding was. Did I... did I hit my head and forget something important, Julie?” He asked it so earnestly, like he was actually concerned that was what had happened, she couldn’t help but laugh and kiss him.
“I have no idea what’s going on either,” she admitted. Also, she couldn’t help but be amused her grandmother had called Reggie before calling her. She was about to ask what he’d told her, when her phone started ringing. It was Tía Victoria.
“Mija, I am so sorry,” she said before Julie could even get a ‘hello’ out. “I was talking to your Tía Camila about the movie, and I mentioned that cute thing Reggie had said, and apparently she misunderstood...” Oh god. Oh my god, that made so much sense. Tía Camila lived for drama and gossip. Reggie was pressed against her so he could listen in, and he pulled back, eyes wide.
“Thanks, Tía. We’ll... we’ll sort it out,” Julie managed. When she hung up, the first thing she did was text Flynn a ‘stand down’ before she actually managed to hunt down Carlos. The second thing she did was turn to Reggie. Except he wasn’t next to her anymore, he was rummaging through one of the grocery bags near the door.
“Aha,” he said, beaming. Julie could hear something being opened, and then he came back, hiding something behind his back. “I think I have the solution to our problems.”
“Is it a tub of cookie dough ice-cream? Because I think I could use a tub of cookie dough ice-cream right about now,” Julie said. Reggie shook his head, grinning, before kneeling down in front of her and presenting her a ring-pop.
“I picked these up while your grandma was talking, just in case,” he said. Julie felt her breath catch in her throat. Reggie was kneeling in front of her. With a ring. A candy ring, but still. Suddenly, his eyes went wide, like he realised what he was doing, and he stood back up. She fought down her disappointment.
“Wait!” he said. “You’re supposed to be the one who proposed!” He pushed the ring at her, and she couldn’t help but laugh, taking the ring and his hand between hers.
“Really?” she asked, fighting back tears.
“I told you, Julie,” Reggie said, his free hand finding her cheek, thumb stroking away the first tears that spilled over gently. “I’d marry you in a heartbeat.”
