I love it when an area in a video game is, like, a series of tiny islands floating in an endless void, and only the bridges between them have safety rails. Like, I completely understand why you'd do that from a game design perspective – falling off the islands themselves is fine, but you don't want the player to be able to kill themselves in the middle of a loading transition or event trigger, which are located on the bridges – but from a worldbuilding perspective it feels like malicious compliance on an institutional level. The regulations say that all walkways must have safety rails, and rules are rules!
#grand canyon#I'm nit saying they are common#and i see your point#but also#there's a few forest paths with high drops into a river with bridges over the paths#and those bidges have handrails#granted there's usually trees but humains tend to beluece we'll stick to the path and so therefore no need of handrails over precipices#unless there's a path
