The Shockwave

There’s a couple of things in life I can’t stand.

1- Waiting in lines

2- Amusement parks

3- Feeling sicker than a dog but trying to act normal

4 of my friends dragged me out to the local amusement park for my friend, Scott’s birthday. I really wasn’t feeling good that morning, I had a fever and I was throwing up. The night before wasn’t any better, I was at a party, and most of what happened after having the first couple of drinks was a complete haze. I don’t know if it was something in the drinks or my tolerance, but I was still feeling something when my phone buzzed off that morning. I shook the nauseous feeling off and flipped my phone open to see a text from Scott.

“Get outside dingus”, it read.

After a short drive and argument about the place with the best tickets,

I found myself doing the 3 main things in life I couldn’t stand,

standing in line for a behemoth rollercoaster near the entrance

called, “The Shockwave”.

We all rushed to it first because there was a rumor it was soon to be torn down.

Our fathers told stories of how it shook them, and tales of people who literally were brought to unconsciousness before the 6-7 of 9 loops that led to an unfathomable corkscrew. Some swore the designers of the ride themselves had it out for the riders, designing something sort of a euthanasia coaster. I knew I should’ve kept my distance when we first pulled up at the park. Right next to the entrance you could see it’s giant metallic blue beams reaching to the highest heights of the park at it’s first curve-around drop. It was our first target as soon as we got through the swinging metal turnstiles. As we walked in, a man bumped me and dropped his park map. I bent down to pick it up, and for a second I saw Scott with his holding his head and sitting at a bench not afar. That’s weird I thought, Scott was right next to me seconds ago. The man broke my line of sight, and I saw a girl in a black dress sitting at the bench. I disregarded it, turned to Scott, he was exactly where he was before. The line seemed endless. As we sat watching each person edge forward, a feeling of anticipation grew. 

You could hear the roar of the the carts grow with each step forward. The blue and white patterned tent flaps would blow up every so often revealing a section of the coaster, each more menacing thing than the last. As we got closer to the station, I started making out a trail of vomit off the exit of the roller coaster. A utility road was nearby, as the coaster blew flap up, I could see down it. An ambulance was not afar, almost as if an an omen. The flap blew back down as the rollercoaster thundered away. I started wondering about why I was doing this at that point. There was another fast line running parallel, I knew I could leave, just walk back, but Scott would never forgive me, and I would never hear the end of it from the rest of the guys. I’ve rode on all sorts of rides in my life, but something just felt different about this one, or it was the day, I still can’t put my finger on it. 

As we got closer to the station, an exposed section of track neared. The rumbling was emanating from that particular point more than anywhere else, as it was where the ride passed after the first drop. I watched a couple of trains go by as the line slowly trickled forward. I tried to make the faces out, and as I focused on the upcoming car, I could make out myself, passed out, and Scott smiling, arms up, unaware of the lifeless corpse next to him. 

”It’s just in your head”, I thought, “It’s just a rollercoaster”. We were nearly a couple of cars away, I tuned to Scott and told him, “I can’t do this”,

I started to turn back but he grabbed me by the shoulder, “Why’d I even take you with if you’re going to just back out like this, This is always like you. Go ahead, ruin my day”,

He said with an angry glare.

I deliberated his words, and the visions; the now gone ambulance blinking back into seconds of existence with each speeding train. I put it all out of my head. I had to let go of these thoughts. They weren’t real.

I turned back and stood by my friends.

The trains seemed to be moving faster as we started climbing up the stairs of the station, soon enough we were waiting in the metal overhang, watching the trains roll in and out. I could feel a queasy feeling in my stomach, as I watched the next train roll in, I saw myself in the train, whiter than a ghost. Scott tried to yell at the operators to get their attention.

I snapped out of my vision by a quick tug from Scott to the front car.

The rest of our group filled the car behind.

We sat for a few moments before the harnesses dropped down,

A little metal belt secured the harness to the chassis.

The harness had these rough bulbous plastic edges around the head, That made it highly uncomfortable in the little moments trying to look around the lift hill. I could see how some people might have rocked themselves, knocking their head on the harness, so I held firm and steady. The suns glare glimmered of the shuttering chain lift of the shock wave. As we got pulled higher and higher, you could see more and more of the park. It felt liberating almost, the feeling of suspense and amusement. As the freedom of the highest point turned, the screams grew in the cars ahead, as the cars plummeted into the first of a series of 9 loops. The first 3 or so were fine, but all of a sudden I lost count. A feeling over came me like a glitched video game, as if reality was stuttering me back to the beginning of the loop. This happened much more than nine times, and oddly enough I was suddenly not feeling sick at all, in fact I was feeling better than ever, The moment I thought this was when I nailed my head on the stupid harness. A flash of black overcame me. It snapped with the whoosh of a turn, and soon enough I was spinning 360 degrees through the corkscrew. I could feel this stinging, pulsing pain throughout my head. But I disregarded it and cheered each turn and swoop with my friends. 

We rolled into the station full speed. Everyone was cheering, and yelling “again”, 

I turned to Scott to see a full smile on his face.

In the distance, the ambulance now stood with it’s lights on. I thought to point it out, but what would it matter.

A paramedic near the exit told me an older man had a heart attack in line, as we walked out the exit I could see him being wheeled towards the ambulance.

We neared the stretcher as it passed us in the fast line out, 

A little wind edged the white sheet they used to cover the man’s face,

I could swear it was me.

My hair, my curvature, my everything.

I felt a part of me get pulled away in that ambulance, even if it was some random man in there, I wouldn’t know the difference anyways. When everything is controlled anything can happen. 

The true fear I had towards amusement, was in that moment, in myself. In not truly knowing If I’m alive or dead, but being propelled forward anyways. Maybe this had happened multiple times before, maybe it hadn’t. If I did render myself unconscious was this a resulting reality. Did I ever wake up that morning at all? Would I really know the difference if so?

That was to me and always will be, The Shockwave.
