Here's a quick ask:
Are the ladies naturally born witches or are they trained to do witchcraft?
Good question! I see people have different interpretations of it. My personal one is that none of them are naturally born witches.
‼️HEADCANONS‼️
However, I think there are some of them who are more magically inclined than others, either naturally or not. One of the current lines of thought I'm following is that Fox was originally born in the Nowhere (thought came to mind after a conversation with my friend @/kordeliiius about the Nowhere residents and how their populations expanded and/or died out) and, as a result, is more inclined to its call. I think she could learn magic more easily and even have some strong affinity for it, but it's not something her body would do naturally.
Although, it is worth noting that magic is a thing that exists in the Little Nights world and that, apparently, it can be studied and learned in spite of that.
(I guess that could be an explanation as to why the Butler in VLN has such similar powers to the Lady, but not on the same magnitude...)
Even so, I could see her easily being the odd one out and being the only one of the lineage who never learns to use magic.
As for the others, I think the progression was less natural and more of a requirement to adapt to their new conditions. I think most of the other Ladies are like Six; kids from other worlds. And plagued by the Hunger, too. I suppose the Hunger (or, rather, the empty hole that it creates) is what initially brings out the soul sucking ability - as a survival mechanism. It's not a natural thing of the body though, it's induced from outside forces. As said before, I think the others ended up learning magic and perhaps even creating/improving previous spells on their own -- Tengu is vaguely hinted to be prolificent in the creation of Nomes while Rascal/the current Lady has the Shadow Children as well, an enhanced version (more Ladies themed) of the Nomes, for example.
