I don't want to add god's longest addition to the would you survive an apocalypse?' poll, but I do actually have an absolutely fallproof plan for the zombie apocalypse. It doesn’t matter what kind of zombies there are & it has exactly (2) steps:
1. Drive to the nearest National Trust proparty
2. win
This is the result of a very lengthy (and completely serious) discussion with my sister so let me break it down for you.
Benefit 1: EVERYTHING'S THERE
For those of you who don't live in the UK (or don't have parents with exactly 1 idea for a family trip ever), all National Trust proparties are broadly speaking exactly the same.
There's a big rich person's house & the courtyard is always converted into a little picnic area containing a combination gift shop/booking desk; a cafe and a secondhand bookshop. The gift shop has like a 60% chances to contain basic gardening tools and a little section for seeds & bulbs.
I won't list their standardised cafe menu (that I do in fact have memorised), but it's pretty good & more importantly most of it is made or at least finished on site. If they rationed, a small group could live off National Trust cornish pasties, scones & gift shop fudge for a month or two I think <3
Here's a list of things that are might be there but aren't 100% guaranteed:
- Kitchen garden
- Fish pond
- Livestock (usually chickens, sometimes pigs or bees)
- Medieval armour (fuck ya'll with guns but I would take a pike over having to worry about ammunition any day)
- Horses and functioning stable
- Forests cultivated for the purpose of deer hunting
John McRichman's gun/archery collection
- Lake
Benefit 2: FUCKING!! CASTLE!!
Tumblr media
??? Where do I start???
1. These things are so easy to defend it's laughable.
I'm sure we all know about spiral staircases being designed to maximise cover for a right handed person during sieges but it's more than that ??? 18th century rich people loved to make their estates look as big, impressive & isolated as possible & they did this by surrounded their houses on all sides with several hundred metres of flat, open grass with thick trees on the edges to block out the horizon.
- Nothing can see you
- No loud noises will be within earshot of anything close to civilisation
- Any zombies that DO somehow show up can be picked off at a distance whether they know how to run or not
- Litterally there are so many little towers & secret rooms & shit how do you even manage to fuck up enough to die here like I would actually be impressed
- ALSO the edge of the estate is usually also walled off and/or fenced & gated, so there's no chance of anything wandering in by accident
2. All the older infrastructure is designed pre-electricity so you'll still be able to have a shower when the power grid inevitably explodes or something
3. You get to sleep in one of those huge 4-poster beds with all the fun embroidery and silk pillows
4. Idk the massive lawn can be converted into a farm if the apocalypse goes on long enough
Genuinely I think my quality of life would actually improve?? and that's just with what's already there - if there was time to pick up some supplies beforehand me & my buddies would just be hanging out. literally what apocalypse im eating scones xoxo

How to Build a Greek Revival in The Sims 4 Like a Nerd
Tumblr media
This one was so easy to put together... until it came to a floorplan. There seems to be very little consistency between homes and designers in regard to where each room goes, where the stairs go, and so on, so I did my best. On the plus side that means more creative freedom for you! Whatever you do inside, the outside is guaranteed to be gorgeous with the columns, pediment, symmetrical façade, and elegant roofline and friezes. I did this with just the base game, but of course you don't have to. Ready? Let's build!
If at any point what I am writing doesn't make sense, there is a full video tutorial here that might show a little better than I can tell.
The Greek Revival as a home was originally constructed in the mid 1800s, but you will still see elements used in modern designs, especially in commercial buildings like banks. The tall round columns and triangular pediment over the main entry are probably the main tells of the Greek Revival style, although others include the low hipped roof, tall narrow windows, and use of white and light colored wood throughout the home. Because this home is considered such a classic style, and in one way or another has been around for thousands of years, you can style it to fit in nearly anywhere.
Floorplan
The main footprint of the build will be a large two-story rectangle, with the wider side facing the front. You can use medium or tall walls on the first floor and short or medium on the second. I used medium for both. The floorplan will be pretty symmetrical, and can be closed off rooms joined by large arches, an open floorplan, or a combination. Starts will generally be at the center of the build, but whether they are in that main entry hall or not depends on the home. The main floor will be living space, and if you choose to expand try and keep the home symmetrical.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some homes may have a deep wraparound deck at the front, some at the back, some all around, and some not at all. However, if you do add one, be sure to cover it and add evenly spaced columns.
Upstairs will be mostly bedrooms. Since these homes often had very large rooms, you can fit in bathrooms pretty easily even if you want your build to feel older. Of course new constructions will have more planning around plumbing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Exterior
Aside from the entry space, the face of your build will be quite flat. Siding will typically be brick, plaster, narrow siding, and/or stucco, and white. If you use multiple textures, consider using a frieze or floor trim to accentuate the separation between levels. Windows will be tall, paned, and placed two or three tiles symmetrically across the front of your home. For privacy, the upper floor may have complimentarily placed but smaller windows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the front entry, make a small deck and add columns. For a two level entry, I like to set the second floor balcony back one tile so I can stretch the front columns all the way to the roof uninterrupted. Top the structure with a gable roof, remove the eaves, and if you have a family crest or flags those would place very well in the open face of the roof.
Tumblr media
Before you roof everything, though, place a platform covering the whole roof area. Add white platform trim, then place your hipped roof. This will hide the eave edges, even if they are pulled in, and you can add floor trim or a frieze to customize how thick and fancy you want that roof border to be. Same for the roof above the deck.
Once you have that how you want it, you can place your roof pieces. Other than the pediment, you will be working with mostly closed faces, and use hipped and half hipped roof pieces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When you are landscaping such an elegant and high-class home, keep order in mind. Tame shrubs around the foundation, contained flowerbeds, and smooth lawns (maybe a fountain if the pond tools are calling your name) will accentuate the build very well.
Tumblr media
Interior
High ceilings, white walls, light colored wood floors and cabinets, and the large windows all come together to bring a light and bright vibe to the home. While the floorplan can be open or more closed off, be sure you can have a clear line of sight into the next room and keep ratios in mind when furnishing and decorating. The ancient Greeks were quite into math and beauty combined, after all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I only removed half a tile from this landing, but if you are looking for a good home to practice opening landings, this is a good one. An easy way is to place a fence or half wall around the area you want to open and delete the floor. If that doesn't work, you can open up the whole floor and build what you want to keep back in with flat floor pieces.
If you want to update this home, the boxy exterior and floorplan make that super easy.
Trade out the round Greek columns for something more square
Choose smaller floor trims and/or friezes and change up the siding colors and textures.
Inside, square off arches, update cabinets and fixtures, and place furniture in a less structured way. You can also warm up the walls with some beige or soft earth tones.
If you want to check out my build, it is on the gallery! My ID is sahmandbean and the lot title is Greek Revival Shell.
If you're interested in floorplans and reference images, check out my collection here on Pinterest.
If you want a more through tutorial, I recommend the video version over on YouTube.

Thanks for building with me today!

Permaculture ensures survival of all species while being more productive and much cheaper, long term, than monocultures.
Permaculture ensures survival of all species while being more productive and much cheaper, long term, than monocultures.
Throw as many different seeds as you can find onto your soil. Mother Earth is more than capable of deciding which ones sprout, and when, and why. She has created us, after all.
Sow, observe, and harvest only half of what the soil gives you, let the rest mature and return to the soil, to both fertilize and seed the soil. It’s a double win, and saves a tremendous amount of resources, money, machines, time, energy, labor… all while improving the environment.
Permaculture is how we secure our food supply, diversity of life, and save enormous amounts of money and water.
Permaculture systems do not require big expensive machines, unless you want to create swales, canals, ponds, etc. of any size, without a team of people with shovels happy to work together for the good of literally everything. It creates a safe, calm, peaceful, healing environment, and job opportunities for a huge amount of people.
Imagine the fact that vast flat monoculture acres can be transformed into abundant food forests by seeding the land, and designing walking paths made from nothing but a layer of wood chips, which, when inoculated with edible mushroom spores, provide an extra source of food.
Imagine, having to harvest mushrooms first before you can walk around, that is the abundance that matters. And it is as easy as getting all the seeds and spores you can get your hands on and designing, or asking an artist to co-design walking paths.
Swales, small canals, and ponds can be linked throughout the landscape to let rainwater sink in and provide further habitat for beneficial animals that eat pests.
Allow a limited amount of ducks and chickens to roam the land, a small amount, very small amount, so that they never run out of food and you never have to feed them, because that’s unnecessary extra cost and effort.
Greed breeds stupidity. Always give the animals you want to keep abundant space, think in terms of passive production. The more space you give animals, the less work you have to do! Freeing up your energy and attention to focus on designing permaculture systems, but most important of all, to observe.
Observing allows one to receive new insight which can never be gained from books, which are all written in the past, while current conditions are ever changing, non-stop. Permaculture is about allowing the land to surprise you, nature responds very strongly to positive intent.
The grass is your friend, it holds an insane amount of water, provides shade, but never too much or too less because it’s so thin. It harvests a huge amount of dew as well, that slides down into the soil, and beneficial fungi thrive in conjunction with grass.
It also attracts frogs, lizards, and many other creatures that eat the ones we don’t want, while slowing down slugs tremendously, keeping them and other creatures “blind” to the vegetables.
Grass and vegetables go extremely well together, it makes no sense to seperate the two. Seperation doesn’t work long term. Let it all co-exist. It is all designed by nature to work together, and it does, if you allow it.
We don’t need to mow lawns, just throw many seeds of fruits, vegetables, herbs, trees, etc on it and let it take off on its own.
Grass does not inhibit crop growth, it stimulates it! Free food, no work, no more mowing, which means no more mowing machine, no more cost of purchase/gasoline/electricity/maintenance and no more noise! More free time you can spend relaxing and observing.
Remember the most important part: harvest only half and do nothing else but harvesting half of everything.
“Though the problems of the world are increasingly complex, the solutions remain embarrassingly simple.” ― Bill Mollison

The Ultimate Guide to Bermuda Grass and Turf Installation in Sydney
Because of the favorable climatic conditions of Sydney and a very active lifestyle, people feel that it is very important to have rich green grass in front of their house. Now, should you plan to take up lawn redesign, Bermuda grass Sydney may be the way to go. To learn why Bermuda grass is a great choice, and get advice on turf laying in Sydney, keep reading this blog.
Why Bermuda grass for Sydney lawn? 1. Resilience and Durability Cynodon dactylon, commonly referred to as Bermuda grass Sydney is very much known to be hardy. Well adapted to the warm climate of Sydney, it has been observed to endure high temperatures and sometimes drought conditions. It has good stability at the root and this gives it the ability to grow again after it has been trampled by many people, it is mostly suitable for a backyard or any public place like a park.
2. Low Maintenance
Bermuda grass is not very difficult to maintain once it is established, it is compared to other types of grass. Establishes a hardly penetrable root system hence does not require frequent watering, and has a low incidence to pests and diseases hence no much time spent on lawn maintenance.
3. Aesthetic Appeal
This grass grows to produce a spongy cover that gives it a pleasing aesthetic outlook to the compound it grows in. It has a fine texture and bright green colour which can beautify your landscape area and offer you a great place to spend your leisure time. Steps to Turf Installation in Sydney Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you with the process of turf installation Sydney:   1. Soil Preparation
Due to this, before sowing down your Bermuda grass turf installation Sydney, make sure that the preparatory work on the soil is done as required. Till the land to prepare the soil, get rid of any weed, rocks, or unwanted objects on the ground. Plow or dig the soil to a depth which is preferably 10-15 cm deep as a way of preparing for root penetration and aeration. 2. Soil Testing and Amendment You should also consider conducting a soil test to know the specific Ph of the soil and availability of nutrients. It is noteworthy that Bermuda grass is rather fond of soils with slightly acidic to neutral pH, which ranges between 6. 0 and 7. According to the findings on the test done on the soil, add the missing nutrients and organic matter to the soil in order to have a perfect growing environment. 3. Grading and Leveling
Water has to drain well on the ground and grading plays an important role in that by avoiding formation of ponds on the surface. Even the ground by levelling it so that there would be a flat surface on which the turf will be installed. This step is very important so that in future your lawn is healthy and nicely maintained. 4. Turf Selection and Purchase
To install the bermuda grass turf select the best supplier in Sydney and obtain high-quality turf. It is thus better to plant fresh and healthy sods if one would want to have a better shot at establishment and growth. When you are cutting your lawn, ensure that you measure it in order that you order the right amount of turf to be delivered then you add 5-10% to the service that you will receive because there will be wastage due to cutting and shaping. 5. Maintenance
After Bermuda grass has rooted itself into the ground, certain practices need to be kept in place as are outlined below. Mow the lawn regularly, and do not let the grass grow too high, ideally, it should range from 2. 5 to 4 cm. Aim at fertilizing these according to the recommendations of Bermuda grass and look out for pests and diseases. Bermuda grass is one of the best types of grass that you can cultivate in Sydney particularly due to its hardness while at the same time being easy to manage and very beautiful. Thus, if you follow rightful procedures of laying your turf, you will have a green outdoor space all year long. Even if one decides to go organic and not seek the services of professionals, the laying of Bermuda grass turf improves the aesthetics of your compound and the value of your property.

Half return/The lawn is dead
Oneshot
Jango/Shaak
Tags - Angst, Jango's past (comic based), both POV's Other Tags - they visit his old home, Jango is seeing the horrors, Shaak thinks everything is pretty though, based on the song Half Return (obviously)
Description - Jango's half-return, and his history with more emotions than hate.
Notes - This is just a little one-shot based on the extensive lore I have for them because they are real to ME. I might/probably will make it into a little series on ao3, mostly because I don't have the energy to write a full book of it just yet-- so follow me on ao3 @/auxxrat! :D
Enjoy!
It’d been a long while since the dirt of this road had been disturbed. It was a long abandoned road, filled with weeds and holes from storms long past. The dirt had never been kicked up, at least not in a long, long time. The winding road cut through anchors of dead field, looking closer, Shaak noticed that whatever had been planted was burnt to the root. The corpses of the dead plants remained, petrified in coal, while the rocks littering the side of the road showed obvious signs of fire.
Of a fire that burned for hours, hot and heavy, it seemed.
There was no time for investigation, not when Jango was stomping down the path ahead. He said nothing. Not when they landed and not even when the citizens of this planet explained to him that this farm, and its family, had been dead. Shaak didn't want to be the one to tell them they were staring at a living ghost.
The path went down a hill, bending and twisting down a small hill that led to even more rolling fields, and behind that– a forest. Or what looked to be the remains of one. Jango followed the path like he’d done it yesterday like nothing had ever changed. Shaak tripped and scuffed her boots on the rocks and roots that stuck up from the dirt, too busy sightseeing.
There was a large pond in the distance and a river that stretched and curled into the dead forest and beyond their point of vision. Shaak never knew Concord Dawn before the war, before half its surface was burned and holes were blown in it so large you could see it from orbit. She knew this to be Jango’s home, or at least the land his family owned, and even in all its crisp ugliness– she could almost see a flashback of its beauty. Shaak could imagine Jango as a small boy, growing up in such a place, it fit him more than any castle or armor ever had. She could see him bouncing through the fields, curly hair full of leaves, tiny knees scratched, and pink from playing outside. She knew Jango could see it too. He was following ghosts all the way home.
A huge flat piece of land was at the bottom of the field, after what looked to be rows of gardens (guessing from the remains of burnt fences, now just looking like fire logs). Different burn structures stood around them, the one in the center was large, but only the beams remained. A couple of buildings stood behind it and beside it, farmhouses and sheds, Shaak assumed. Jango stood in the middle of this huge, flat circle of dirt, naked of only his armor– dressed like he never left.
And Shaak could see it in his eyes that he never truly did.
𓆩⟡𓆪
There was no more home. There were no more fields, or forests, or ponds to swim in. There were no sunflower fields in front of the house that Mom cared for so dearly, there was no more waiting for Dad to come walking down the path. There was no more Arla.
Jango knew as much, but he didn't expect to feel so dead inside. To see the place he grew up in, and lost everything in, forgotten about. Like it meant nothing. Everything that happened here was simply forgotten about.
And it wasn't…. Fair.
There was no justice, not on this day, and there was no justice when it happened a second time. For the first time, tears built in his eyes. There was nothing to even look at, nothing but ash, and the memory of where his father’s bleeding body lay as he bled out. The ghost of himself, only a child, haunted him. Not in an innocent way, but in a sinister way. Like a cryptic monster curling its fingers around the door to come get him. He could see him, the small boy, somehow more mouthy and bold than he’d ever be at his age. But it wasn’t a pleasant sight. It stared back at him from behind one of the burnt beams, beckoning him to bury himself in the same place his parent’s bodies withered away in.
“Jango’ Shaak called so softly, creating the only beacon Jango could use to pull himself out of this darkness. And when he turned, Shaak no longer saw the face of a hardened Mandalorian, but the face of a small boy who had all the joy from his life snuffed out.
“I’m tired, Ti” His bottom lip wobbled, chin quivering as those baby brown eyes got even sadder. Like an old kicked dog, a tragedy for such a youthful face.
He was standing in his old yard, dressed like a kid in a grown man’s body. Everything was gone, dead.
But as they walked away from the ruins of his past, Jango couldn't help but take one last look over his shoulder. The burnt fields, the broken structures, the memories that haunted him – he couldn't just leave it all behind without a second thought. It was a part of him, a part that had been scarred and shattered but still held significance.
Shaak understood this too. She knew that healing took time, and sometimes revisiting painful places was necessary for closure. As they reached the top of the hill and looked back at what once was their home, she squeezed Jango's hand gently.
"It's okay to feel sad," she said softly, “You are allowed to feel” Jango nodded, his gaze still fixed on the distant remnants of his past life. He knew he had to let go eventually. To forget this place and its significance in his life– in the Republic’s history.
"I'm tired too," Shaak admitted quietly. "But we'll keep moving forward together."
Shaak tested the waters, slipping her slender fingers around his rather large ones– built from slave labor. He held her hand rather tight, and tighter each day they got closer to the end of this journey. Shaak didn’t need a verbal response, just started walking (more like dragging) him up the hill. Something in Jango’s entire body screamed not to go, the nostalgia in him cried out for home– to not pass these fields of familiarity and hide here. Forever. Turn back into a farmer, forget everything except for his name. He could keep that, no one cared for the Fett’s anymore, and their history meant nothing anymore. Not even to Mandalore. He wouldn't be able to keep who he used to be, who his family used to be, but he could keep her. She could be happy here, just as his mother was. She could be free, just a girl, just his girl. And then he could finally—
Shaak kept walking and Jango’s feet followed, but his brain stopped for a moment, and his heart stopped.
When they got to the top of the hill Jango was able to look down once more at the life he had to forget about, there he saw a figure, maybe two. But he could only concentrate on the one. A figure no taller than he is now, her blond hair fell just above her shoulders, a wood-cutting ax slung over her shoulder. At the same time he had looked, the girl looked back up at him, like she was in her universe catching a glimpse of his ghostly figure. They shared this mutual look of confusion before the blond girl broke out in a large smile, waving, and at that moment Jango swore he heard a whisper in the wind:
“Come on home Jango! Street lights are going out!”

10 Low-Maintenance Rock Garden Ideas for Drought-Affected Areas
Tumblr media
Transform Your Landscape with Xeriscaping
Drought is an ongoing and critical issue in the U.S., affecting millions of acres of crops and millions of people. As the need to conserve water becomes increasingly urgent, homeowners can play a significant role in combatting drought by embracing xeriscaping. Xeriscapes are landscapes that require little water besides what the sky provides, often incorporating native plants.
Not only does xeriscaping help conserve water, but it also adds beauty and personality to any property. In this article, we explore 10 low-maintenance rock garden ideas that are not only environmentally friendly but also visually stunning in arid areas.
youtube
Intersperse Bright Hues and Rough-Hewn Rocks
Let your creativity shine by pairing broad splashes of brightly-hued flowers with craggy, rugged rocks. Create a sprawling terrace garden with alternating sections of ground-cover plants like flowering thyme, phlox, and sedums, and wide, relatively flat rocks that can double as stepping stones during maintenance.
Dig a Petite Pond
Add pizzazz to your backyard with a pint-sized pond filled with fish and floating lily pads. Surround the pond with stones in various sizes, such as large, chunky rocks interspersed with smaller pebbles, to delineate its perimeter and create a visually appealing water feature.
Add Gravel in the Garden
Transform an ordinary flower bed into a visually appealing space by incorporating a decorative bench tucked among flat rocks that are flush with the ground. The contrast between rich, dark mulch and small, multi-colored stones adds depth and visual interest to the area.
Divide and Conquer a Large Lawn
If you have a large lawn, consider dividing it into discrete areas that serve different purposes, such as an herb garden, butterfly or bee garden, or even beehives or a chicken coop. Use large, boulder-like rocks to separate these spaces and create distinct areas within your yard.
Rock That Walk
Create a minimalist rock garden by edging a sidewalk with a narrow border of smooth pebbles. This clean and asymmetrical style adds a touch of elegance to any outdoor space. Complete the look with deep-green, leafy plants that complement the rock border.
Use Lighting to Create an Otherworldly Atmosphere
Transform your rock garden into an enchanting evening scene by incorporating illuminated rocks. During the day, the rocks blend into the background, but at night, they create an eerily beautiful moonscape when softly glowing LED indoor/outdoor orb lights are added.
Pair Stone With Succulents
In drought-affected areas, inorganic materials are often used in larger quantities. Create a balanced and aesthetically appealing xeriscape by combining multicolored pebbles with a solitary palm tree, widely spaced succulents, and a low stone wall. This composition is both visually stunning and water-efficient.
Elevate an Outdoor Space With Stone Steps
If you have a sloping yard, embrace the split-level look by incorporating wide, irregular stone steps. These steps not only define the different levels of your outdoor space but also add visual interest and functionality.
Make a Modern Rock Garden
Create a modern and minimalist rock garden by using precisely pruned shrubs that resemble giant green Rubik's cubes, oversized square pavers, and a tidy rectangle of monochromatic stones. The simplicity of this design makes a bold statement and is perfect for those who appreciate clean lines and simplicity.
Add Some Country-Garden Charm
Create a charming garden path by using midsized slate chips. The horizontally oriented rocks add a touch of country-garden charm and can lead to a wishing well or a cozy seating area.
Create a River-Like Design Through It
Create a meandering river or rocky point effect by incorporating curving lines and seaweed-like tufts of foliage in your rock garden. This design not only adds visual interest but also helps reduce lawn maintenance while catching the eye of visitors.
Keep It Simple With Stones
Create an expansive rock bed that serves as a backdrop for showcasing exquisite plants, rocks, or sculptures. Whether you choose smooth pebbles, snowy-white pea gravel, or chunky creek rocks, a simple surface of stones will enhance the beauty of your displayed items.
Get Creative With a Small Garden
Add drama to a small garden by choosing the right type of landscape rocks. Polished black pebbles or moonlike lava stones can transform an ordinary area into a visually striking space that captures the imagination.
Think Inside the Box
Create a stylized lawn with a deliberately boxy composition. Fill each section with contrasting or complementary materials, such as stones of different sizes and foliage with varying heights, to create a unique and eye-catching "lawn-drian" masterpiece.
Transforming your landscape into a low-maintenance rock garden is not only visually appealing but also a smart move for conserving water in drought-affected areas. By embracing xeriscaping and incorporating rocks into your design, you can create a stunning outdoor space that requires minimal water while adding beauty and personality to your property. Whether you choose to intersperse bright hues with rough-hewn rocks or create a minimalist rock garden with stone steps, the possibilities for creating a stunning rock garden are endless.
Embrace your creativity and take the first step towards a water-efficient and visually appealing landscape.

THE BOARDROOM HAS been laid out exactly as instructed, even down to the refreshments tray waiting on the polished sideboard - the ‘distinguished guest’ edition that only comes out when they want to make sure somebody feels special. Given that today’s only external visitor is a local shopkeeper, that raised some eyebrows. Tall silver urns reflect their passing as they enter, hand-written labels on crisp white card proclaiming their contents. Actual porcelain cups and saucers are laid out enticingly in a neat line, a small box in polished dark wood propped open to display a tempting array of herbal and fruit teas, and as a finishing touch a plate of fresh shortbread waits at the very end.
Mainder wastes no time heading for the urn marked Coffee, even before Raj thinks to tell him to help himself, pouring himself a small sample and passing it under his nose as if assessing the quality of the blend. It seems to pass inspection. The corners of his eyes crinkle in a sudden smile, and he fills his cup all the way and retreats to the bay window overlooking the back lawn.
It used to be a lawn, anyway. What it is now - well it’s a tragedy, is the only possible word. The once impeccable green, centuries-old turf expertly kept, is now a crisscrossed mess of shallow pits and muddy paths worn between them, red clay tracked all about and over the brick terrace off the kitchen. The curate’s charming little pond was filled in long ago by a resident with an eye to the safety of his young family, but even with the deep water gone it remains an unappealing prospect, a waterlogged dip in the ground overshadowed by the twin pillars of the marker trees. The pooled dark between the trees reassures him, at least; somehow it appears they’ve managed not to disturb anything. Not yet anyway.
Once this was the curate’s dining room, its former function echoed now by the long oval table in polished wood, its glossy finish a dark mirror reflecting the contents of the room. That includes the nervous fidgets of the smart young man from reception, loitering near the door and casting anxious glances between the clock and Mainder himself as if expecting trouble.
He can’t bring himself to care, to be honest. So much for a ten-fifteen prompt start, but he knows a power play when he sees one. His own lateness was half laziness, half mischief, but if he’d stirred himself to arrive precisely at the designated time he doesn’t doubt the director would have been unavoidably busy until fifteen minutes after that. For coffee this excellent he’s prepared to sit still and be patient, anyway.
In the end there’s time to despatch that first cup and begin another before the door finally opens and Patterson enters.
‘So sorry to keep you waiting.’ he lies briskly, taking up position at the head of the table. Behind him follows a bland young woman wearing a scarlet blouse that clashes horribly with the shapeless floral cardigan hanging from her shoulders. Secretary, Mainder assumes, judging by the bundle of folders clutched to her thin chest. After her, a steady stream of people of all genders, all in jeans and t-shirts and hooded sweatshirts, all early twenties at the absolute most. All self-consciously checking their shoes and trouser legs for mud as if it’s only just occurred to them that they might accidentally track their working dirt across the plush carpet.
The last man in closes the door and takes his seat, and Patterson places both hands palm-flat on the table before he claims their attention with a practiced lecturer’s ‘ahem’.
‘Welcome, Mr Mainder. Ah, I believe we spoke briefly at the conference? The board were very intrigued by your insight - a little local expertise, so to speak. I wonder if perhaps we could deal with the formalities before we discuss the details.’
A folder appears at Mainder’s elbow while he’s still mulling over the implied sneer in that ‘so to speak’. He decides he won’t rise to it; he’s feeling generous today. He pats his pockets absently, reaching inside the front of his coat on one side and then the other until he finds a pair of delicate metal-rimmed glasses which he settles fussily on his face to examine the documents.
There’s not much to examine; two copies of the same thing, a non-disclosure agreement printed double-spaced on every other line and still only covering three sides of A4. Purely for the hell of it, not that he intends for a moment to abide by anything it contains, he takes his sweet time reading both copies, occasionally laying them down again to drink more coffee or flicking back to refer to a previous page, eventually laying them both side by side and comparing them line by line to make sure they’re identical.
They are. What’s more this is no generic template; his name is typed in the same font as the rest, several standard clauses are missing, and some new and very specific sections have been added to cover ‘artefacts, spoil, etc. …’ that he is under no circumstances to examine without a team member present, and even more stringently he is not to take away or remove any such items from the site. Presumably Vernon has hinted at treasure under the lawn, academic if not monetary, but how exactly do they imagine they’d stop him if that’s so?
His attention is momentarily caught by the secretary. She’s not actually doing anything, which is the strange thing; just staring down at her hands resting in her lap. A pensive Madonna, her pose suggests, humbly waiting to be glorified. It’s strangely calming, the way she sits at perfect rest. He can almost see it spreading out in gentle waves and subduing uneasy fidgets around the room. He warms to her even as he forgets her existence again. That ought to be enough time to … yes, there it is; the unmistakable rhythm of someone tapping their foot under the table. He neatly shuffles both documents into their separate piles and looks up.
‘I don’t suppose you have a pen?’
Patterson almost launches his own across the table in his haste, and Mainder reviews the cheap disposable biro for a frozen moment. It could be worse - at least the end hasn’t been chewed - but it could also most certainly be better. He puts it aside and searches his pockets again.
The fountain pen he at last produces puts Patterson’s offering to shame, as he very much intended. Capped in old gold, its bullet-shaped body in midnight blue lacquer, once upon a time it would have been the only conceivable choice for the serious man of business. He developed a strong preference for the style as soon as he was in a position to try it out and hasn’t found a good reason to change it since. He uncaps it and rests the hooded nib on the edge of the folder, teasing out the ink flow and testing it with three short strokes. The ink gleams on the thin cardboard, deep forest green, and he pulls the paperwork back over and signs both documents with an unreadable flourish. Too much to hope these people would have blotting paper to hand, if they even know what that is any more, so he holds the papers in his hand and waves them gently until he’s satisfied the ink has dried.
There’s a marked change in the atmosphere when he lays the papers back down, as though the room collectively had held its breath and is just now letting it out.
‘All done. What’s next?’
The secretary rises and passes him another thin stack of paper, shrinking away when his fingers accidentally make contact with hers, and takes her seat. She’s forced to stand up again instantly by someone on the wrong side of the room realising that he’s supposed to be setting up the display screen, and an awkward few seconds follow of people getting up, pushing in their chairs and pressing up against the table to allow him to pass before sitting back down, like a painfully polite slow-motion Mexican wave.
‘Thank you, Viktor - ah, does anyone have the controls? Ah yes, here we are. Now -’
The screen lights up with what looks very much like the same slide deck as Patterson presented at the conference. Mainder feels entirely justified in ignoring him after the first few seconds; if the man is going to narrate every single bullet point he might as well just read it himself. Especially since the first thing in the folder is a full-size print out of the exact same slides. ‘The Fairy Hill: a centre of late Bronze Age worship and commerce’, the title of the presentation proclaims, and Patterson’s monotone retelling adds nothing of value. He lets it wash over him while he reviews diagrams, photographs and blueprints, reading every detailed note. Everything he needs to know is right here.
‘… unexpected results as you can see, but I believe we’ve exhausted that area now. In phase two we’ll be investigating what appear to be significant structures under the lawn here, spreading east and extending under one corner of the current building. Possibly an earlier dwelling, cellars or foundations belonging to the current building, or earthworks relating to civil war defences.’
All solid theories. All very feasible. All of them completely and utterly wrong, which is his favourite thing about them. If you know what you’re looking for the scans clearly shadow the structures beneath, but since they don’t appear to know what they were looking for … well, this must have caused significant confusion. He almost smiles - unexpected results, indeed - and turns over the sheet to check the back.
The urge to smile drains away and he tenses, fingers pinching a crease in the edge of the thin paper. This page shows an image so clear that for a moment he’s almost convinced they’re simply playing dumb. There’s no way they can’t see what they’re looking at - the Fold’s ancient chambers, right down to the slight narrowing where one spiral arm was damaged in the Closing. He can still recall as clearly as if it were yesterday how it felt; the pain in the moment, the loss, and the dreadful aftermath as they pieced events together and discovered exactly what had been done to them all.
Chill fury rises in him like bile. Sweyn is still trapped down there somewhere - not that there’ll be anything left of the poor little sod by now, but still. If by some miracle they do get anywhere near that section, it’s on him to see if he can retrieve anything.
‘Ah, does our guest have an opinion?’
Patterson has to repeat that last before Mainder raises shadowed eyes to sweep the room. A muscle jumps in his cheek, but all he says in a quiet, flat tone is, ‘What’s your favoured option at this point?’, a neat deflection to disguise the fact that he really wasn’t paying attention.
Patterson seems delighted with the question though, gesturing eagerly at the presenter to rewind the slides back to the image of the lawn scan marked up with arrows and boxes.
‘We thought - could I have the pointer again please? Thank you - we thought here.’, and he indicates a dark blob on the far top left of the marked areas. “It looks very promising, wouldn’t you say?”.
‘As good a place as any, yes.’
His lukewarm approval sparks a burst of activity, half the table pushing back their chairs and leaving the room, the other half talking past each other in a rising babble.
For his part he keeps his eyes down, the table’s polished surface a convenient mirror for him to observe the room. There’s more to this dynamic than meets the eye. There has to be. His dark eyes flick from person to person, evaluating. Patterson - already dictating a detailed to-do list to Raj. The unlucky volunteer on tech support duty - powering down the display and extracting a storage drive with a pained grunt from the awkward socket hidden somewhere on the back. Youngsters gathering in the hallway outside waiting for the last stragglers, self-consciously sweeping the chairs clean of the traces of mud they’ve brought in with them. The secretary, still seated and leaning forward on her elbows …
… watching him. Using the table exactly as he is, the angle of reflection letting her observe him indirectly, with her colourless brows pinched together in faint concern. She holds his gaze for just a split second then rises without a word and is instantly lost in the crowded corridor.
Damn it. He didn’t actually get a decent look at her, not for all his staring. There was nothing of her to hold on to, is the problem, easily the least interesting person - visually speaking - in the room. All he can recall is mousy hair, nondescript features - and the terrible fashion sense, of course. If she discarded that awful cardigan somewhere he’d likely walk past her without a second glance. Intrigued, he rises to follow and nearly collides with Patterson stepping into his path.
‘So pleased to have you on board, Mr Mainder. Ah, can I interest you in a little guided tour?’

Unveiling the Magic Behind designing and building a landscaping service
Our world is a plethora of visual delights, and amidst them all, there's a special place for beautifully designed landscapes. Imagine walking into an outdoor space that mirrors the beauty of nature, enhanced by human touch, ensuring functionality and aesthetic appeal. This isn't a mere fantasy. Such places exist thanks to the dynamic world of landscape design and build services.
Aesthetics is the soul of any space. But it's not just about choosing a few plants here and there. It's about envisioning a whole setup, integrating various elements, and then executing that vision to perfection. This is where professional design and build services step in.
Tumblr media
The Magic of Landscape Design:
The design phase is where imagination meets paper. Professional landscape designers undergo rigorous training to ensure that they can interpret a client's wishes and craft designs that are both beautiful and sustainable.
A well-thought-out design takes into account various factors:
Topography and Soil Conditions: Different lands have unique characteristics. A sloped area will have different design needs compared to a flat one. The type of soil determines what plants will thrive.
Client's Vision: Some clients might want a tranquil Zen garden, while others dream of a vibrant flower bed with chirping birds. It's essential to capture the essence of what the client wants.
Functionality: Design isn't just about aesthetics. It's about making helpful space. Whether it's creating walkways, seating areas, or even outdoor kitchens, functionality plays a crucial role.
Eco-Friendliness: Sustainable designs that respect nature and its resources are gaining popularity. Using native plants, efficient water management techniques and renewable materials are examples of green design practices.
The Brilliance of Build Services:
The next stage is to bring the design to reality after it has been established. This is where the actual construction begins. Outdoor design and build services are a confluence of art and engineering.
Some key facets include:
Infrastructure Creation: Whether it's laying down pathways, building patios, erecting pergolas, or installing water features like fountains and ponds, this phase is all about creating the foundational structures that define the landscape.
Planting: A landscape is incomplete without its green inhabitants. Depending on the design, this can range from grassy lawns and flowering plants to trees and shrubs. The choice of plants can drastically influence the look, feel, and even the aroma of a place.
Illumination: Landscape lighting can elevate the beauty of a place manifold. From highlighting certain plants to ensuring safety along pathways, lighting plays a multifaceted role.
Irrigation: An efficient water system ensures the lushness of the landscape. Modern irrigation systems like drip irrigation and soaker hoses ensure that plants get adequate water without wastage.
Regular Maintenance: Post the build phase, it's imperative to maintain the landscape to ensure its longevity. From regular pruning and fertilizing to fixing any damages, maintenance ensures that the beauty remains intact.
The Growing Trend of outside construction and design:
Today, there's a growing trend towards integrating indoor and outdoor spaces. Homeowners aren't just looking for beautiful gardens; they want extended living spaces. This might be in the form of outdoor kitchens, fire pits, or even entertainment zones with projectors and screens. This fusion ensures that the line between the indoors and outdoors is blurred, providing a holistic living experience.
The emphasis is also on creating spaces that are a treat for all senses – visually delightful gardens, the sound of water features, the aroma of blooming flowers, the touch of natural textures, and sometimes even the taste of homegrown herbs and veggies.
Conclusion:
In the end, the success of a landscape project hinges on the synergy between design and execution. And for those seeking the perfect blend of artistry and craftsmanship, companies like classicnursery offer comprehensive solutions. With expertise in both design and build phases, they ensure that the journey from envisioning an outdoor space to experiencing it is seamless and satisfying. When beauty, functionality, and sustainability come together, the result is nothing short of magical.
