hi k!!! idk if the post abt random asks to get to know someone better expires but, what got u into football AND what got u into hockey??? sports origin stories r always so endearing to me!!!
hi darling!
that post will never expire don't worry i love the asks! they're so much fun to answer. both of my answers are pretty basic though 🤭
edit: this is so so long so im hiding it under the cut, sorry abi 😭
for hockey, it was the canucks 2011 stanley cup run. i'd been around hockey my whole life, all my brothers and my dad play, and hockey culture is canadian culture there's virtually no separation. i'd watched the 2010 olympics as well where canada won gold in vancouver, but i was too young to really process anything about the game, just the emotions after we won. the city was alive, im pretty sure the men's hockey team couldn't walk anywhere without someone buying them a beer. but the canucks 2011 stanley cup run really solidified it for me. the stanley cup (the ucl of hockey) has 4 rounds, each round is a best of 7 series. it lasts a long time. the canucks team at the time was the best it had ever been, with the most skilled players in the nhl. there were so many iconic moments, like the canucks vs blackhawks (their rivals at the time) in the opening round, the aaron rome hit (big, controversial check), and the entire final series against boston. idk how to describe the energy in vancouver, but it was like nothing i'd ever felt before as a kid. everyone had canucks car flags on their cars, and people wore their jerseys to school on game days. i went with my mom and my siblings to a local library to watch game 7 of the finals on a field with so many other people in my jersey and we painted our whole faces. the song the canucks used to skate onto the ice to during that playoffs gives me chills. i watched every game i was allowed to, and i remember having a debate with a teacher at my school (who was a boston fan) about which team was better, and i got so passionate about it i ended up in tears. it made me love the sport, for everything that is, because the city experienced all the joy of getting to the last game, with the cup in the building in vancouver, only to lose on home ice. but we won and lost together as fans! the canucks slogan is "we are all canucks" and i feel that way every time i lovingly hate on the team or watch a game. i am a stats/tactics nerd, but that came later and this is already too long (i can make another post about it if you really want)
for football, this is kind of cliche but the world cup. again, similar to hockey, i had been around football my whole life and i played when i was younger, i also lived close to two retired soccer players who played for team canada and other semi-pro teams in the vancouver area. during the world cup though, everyone at my university was watching, and i was just excited to see the canadian mnt play at a world cup for the first time since 1986. but then i started watching other games, and highlights took over all my social media, and now i am obsessed 🤭 what really sealed the deal for the obsession was the final, i got up early to watch it live and it was honestly the most exciting sports game i had watched in a long time (because the canucks are suffering currently). i had always thought of football as kind of boring because there was less scoring and nobody was allowed to fistfight, but i can admit when i was wrong! and i was very wrong about that. watching leo get crowned world champion >>>> all other feelings idc!
#thank you so much for the ask sorry it was so long omg#bestie asks 🫶#abi 🪴#my brother and his football team had a sleepover and watched the final together (it was 7am van time)#and theres a video of all these tough teenage boys crying (and thanking god in croatian) when argentina won#fully obsessed with both sports now though!
