On the hospital rooftop, everything had been prepared to receive the patient. But Han Yoohyun held zero intentions of handing Hyung over to another. Confronted with an oppressive atmosphere where, despite being Awakened, those of low-rank could hardly even dare to raise their heads to look Han Yoohyun in the eye, Bak Yerim took charge in his stead.

“He hasn’t incurred any physical injuries, so we should be able to proceed as we are. Don’t let any Healers approach him either, please–you can just lead us to the room where he’ll be staying. You’ve received word that he isn’t to have any potions administered to him either, correct?”

At Bak Yerim’s prompting, the hospital staff led them to the elevator that would take them to a private room, maintaining a large distance between them all the while. It was a sector that Han Yoojin had previously utilized, once. As they headed towards the unit, Bak Yerim began to place several calls. After apprising Haeyeon of the situation, she debriefed Yoo Myungwoo and Noah about what had transpired as well.

“Should I inform Breaker of the situation too, erm, sir?”

“Let’s just let their Guild Leader know, probably.”

“Section Chief Song-nim should be notified as well, no?”

Han Yoohyun responded with a nod. By then, the elevator had slowed to a stop. Before the door even began to open, Han Yoohyun’s expression twisted in a scowl. Exiting the elevator first, Bak Yerim gestured for him to hurry up and follow.

“I know you don’t like it, but what can we do, y’know. It’s not like ahjussi’s come down with an ordinary sickness, right.”

Bak Yerim urged in a low voice. At present, the only hospital that specialized in Hunters was Seseung’s own. There were other major hospitals that employed Healers and possessed systems dedicated to the detoxification of status ailments or the like, but they lacked experts. In particular, their understanding of injuries that were caused by Dungeons or Skills fell short, more often than not. And even if that hadn’t been the case, even in terms of security, the place they were presently at would have been the best option available to them regardless.

But before long, even Bak Yerim’s expression lapsed into a faint frown. There were two people standing at the end of the long hallway, posed as though they’d been waiting for them. The hospital staff that had been trailing after them momentarily froze in place, before quickly backing off even further. Giving a twitch, Velare wrapped herself tighter around Bak Yerim’s arm. Apparently oblivious, only Chirpie flapped a small wing, as though in greeting. 

“Han Yoojin, lad.”

A low voice carried across the corridor. Golden eyes were fixed solely on Han Yoojin. Had it been only a glance, it wouldn’t have raised an issue. But the malevolent, overwhelmingly hostile aura leaking out around him was tantamount to having issued an open threat. A suffocating tenseness slowly pervaded the air, ostensibly a prelude to weapons being drawn. 

Angling herself to block Han Yoojin from his view, Bak Yerim stepped forward to lock eyes with Sung Hyunjae. She met his stare evenly, without a hint of a flinch. 

“We won’t be accepting visitors until ahjussi is awake, sir. Doubly so if you’re showing up empty-handed(2). You should’ve at least picked up some soymilk(3) cartons, don’t you think, sir.”

“I’m afraid I lacked the leisure to make proper preparations, having hurried here so.”

“If you’re well aware, then please do remove yourself from our way, sir.”

“I’ve already stepped aside, have I not.”

The width of the corridor meant there was plenty of room left to maneuver around him. Sung Hyunjae oh-so-kindly pointed out a room at the end of the hall with a finger, indicating the room that served as their destination. Han Yoohyun’s steps resumed from the pause he’d momentarily come to. Footsteps sounded softly through the corridor.

As Sung Hyunjae and Han Yoohyun–and therefore, Han Yoojin–drew nearer to each other, the pressure around them climbed to a stifling level. As the atmosphere became charged to the point where it seemed that all it would take was a small spark to set off a sudden explosion–Sung Hyunjae closed his eyes. The tension immediately dissipating, Han Yoohyun brushed past him. Letting out a quick sigh, Bak Yerim followed suit, with Peace trailing behind her. Shortly after, the sound of a door closing could be heard.

“What are you playing at, sir?”

Kang Soyoung–who had been meekly standing beside him with bated breath–asked, apparently at a loss.

“You hardly set out on this excursion intending to pick a fight, sir, nor would it be a productive thing to do. And particularly when you’d spent the time coming here complaining that Director Han-nim had fallen into declining condition again, I don’t see why you’d be acting completely differently like this, now that we’re here.”

A slow smile spread across Sung Hyunjae’s lips. Blinking, Kang Soyoung stared up at his face. As golden eyes slowly opened, they seemed to glint with a otherworldly light that made him seem inhuman. Abruptly, she was transported back to the first time she had met Sung Hyunjae. She had assumed he couldn’t actually be a human. If the strongest, most beautiful of dragons had donned a human shell–it might be like this, she reckoned. 

Though her instincts were ringing alarm bells, Kang Soyoung wasn’t one to hesitate to throw herself into danger. She was pleased with the compensation awarded to her for her choice, and thought her life at present to be lived to the fullest; but yet, it was still difficult for her to comprehend how she fit into the grand scheme of things. They were all of them humans, certainly–but it felt as though the people surrounding her were more akin to actual dragons. 

“Would you believe me, lass, if I were to say that I was my doing my utmost to hold back.”

“Sir?”

“What has he done this time, I wonder.”

Sung Hyunjae uncurled his clenched fist. A few drops of blood trickled down his fingers, dripping below. Kang Soyoung watched this happen with shocked eyes.

It was a complicated feeling. Enough so that it was difficult to keep a rein on his knee-jerk response. Above all, to Sung Hyunjae as he was now, Han Yoojin was a dangerous existence. A threat to the human ‘Sung Hyunjae’ comprised, who had moreover managed to steal a sliver of his very being as well. And that sliver remained yet embedded in Han Yoojin’s body also.

A piece of his own being. The primal instinct to see it recovered whispered in his ear, urged him to pin down his prey and tear his fangs into it at once. But he could stave it off still. The acute dissonance that scraped at him was a fairly enjoyable experience in its own right, too. When else would he be able to feel such a bizarrely disconcerting sensation as this, after all.

However–the Han Yoojin just then, had been a touch too stimulating. It had been enough to raise the hairs on his body all over, in that instant. The sliver of Sung Hyunjae’s being, which had yet to have its connection to him completely severed, had conveyed to him that Han Yoojin had come face-to-face with an opponent of unbelievable magnitude. 

What might have transpired, this time. It was difficult, holding back that urge to dissect him then and there. Had it been solely Han Yoojin before him, it might have been a struggle that he’d lost. Even as he was loath to lose him, simultaneously, he desired to tear him apart with his very own hands.

“When he repeatedly causes my heart to pound so, I can hardly look unfavorably upon him.”

“There you go again sir, using that kind of off-putting phrasing. Please keep in mind that we’re here to visit an ailing person, first and foremost.”

The hospital staff that had been anxiously waiting for a window of opportunity carefully inched past the two as the malignant pressure in the air dissipated. It was fairly comical, how they still bobbed their heads to pay their respects while staying resolutely plastered to the far wall. Kang Soyoung sent them an apologetic smile. 

“It’s quite convenient for us that Director Han-nim has managed to capture your interest, Guild Leader-nim, but please do exercise a measure of caution as well. Pretty please. He’s the Rearing Facility’s Director-nim, after all, and the Haeyeon Guild Leader’s hyung as well, sir. I’m a lover of peace, you see.”

“Quite so. Perhaps I should have invested more of my attention onto the young master, in any case.”

Kang Soyoung donned a startled expression at the uncharacteristically regret-laden tone, before turning grim.

“No can do at this point, sir. Were you to lay a finger on the Haeyeon Guild Leader, Director Han-nim would definitely blow his top.”

“I’ve no interest in lavishing my attention on him at present. I’m referring to three years previous, as it happens.”

A few months after the Dungeons had appeared, Han Yoohyun had Awakened hence; at that time, Sung Hyunjae had been in the midst of expanding his reach overseas. Even from outside of Korea, he’d heard the tidings of a new S-rank Awakened. And at the first-and-last S-rank Awakened gathering organized by the Hunter Association shortly thereafter, he’d first chanced upon Han Yoohyun, then simply let him slip by after coming to glean the essence of his innate nature.(4)

Since he wasn’t someone capable of drawing his interest. And as his disposition leaned even more independent than even Liette, there was no real need to try his hand at him, either.(5) 

“If only I had examined him closer then, then I might have chanced upon young Han Yoojin back then as well.”

It wasn’t how things had played out, however. The same went, too, when Han Yoohyun had begun laboring to raise a guild of his own, against convention for his nature. As he had managed to sustain the enterprise for quite some time, he had briefly turned his attention back to him somewhat; but even then, confronted with his impassiveness still, his interest had waned once more in due time. The only thing that transpired was some playful toying with Seok Shimyoung, much to his chagrin. 

Why hadn’t he bothered to run a check on his family as well, despite filing him away as a candidate to whom he could leave Korea. This sort of lamentation would occasionally haunt him; but to be frank, Han Yoojin and Han Yoohyun’s relationship at present was altogether miraculous, truly. It was entirely understandable that such an unanticipated phenomenon could have flown under his radar–but it did leave him feeling wistful, regardless.

What would have changed, if he had been able to approach Han Yoojin three years ago. They would have formed a vastly different relationship than what they had now, surely.

“It would have been fairly easy to integrate myself between them, when the brothers had been freshly fragmented, I imagine.”

That would have proved an enjoyable experience, for a number of reasons. Kang Soyoung regarded her superior with indignant eyes as he voiced his sorrows.

“Are you seriously feeling regretful that you couldn’t torment Director Han-nim further when he was already going through such a hard time, sir? Guild Leader-nim, you’re really…….”

“The Rearing Facility would have come to belong to Seseung Guild, surely.”

“Why didn’t you jump on the opportunity, sir! What a waste. I could’ve asked for a transfer to work at the Rearing Facility instead!”

“Did you not call out only the day prior, saying that you had a date with the young miss Liett.......”

“Isn’t that why I’m here now, sir, paying for it with body and soul. I’m dutifully carrying out the task with the top avoidance rate in Seseung Guild, doing bodyguarding for Guild Leader-nim. To think, if Director Han-nim was a Seseung Guild member, I could’ve pushed something like this off on him too!”

Kang Soyoung heaved a heavy sigh of regret. Despite being an A-rank–perhaps because she held the ability to commune with fearsome dragon-types, regardless of rank–Kang Soyoung could deal cavalierly with Sung Hyunjae while being somewhat unaffected as well. As a result, she typically ended up stuck working these sorts of unappealing tasks. But even then, as she wasn’t completely immune to the pressure he gave off either, Han Yoojin’s existence was a grateful one regardless. With Song Taewon being a given as well, of course.

Kang Soyoung whipped her head around to survey their surroundings, and having confirmed that the coast was clear, she continued in a low whisper. 

“When you speak of him to that extent–are you really planning to leave Korea, and Director Han-nim by extension, behind, sir? Though it’s true that the situation seems to be escalating in various locations.”

When it came to the amount of destruction sustained by monster swarms, Korea experienced the least. Even when several low-ranked Dungeons burst open simultaneously, a swift response meant that things could quickly return to normal. Not to mention, the relative stabilization of the Dungeons and the introduction of an alarm network meant the climate had vastly improved. 

However, this wasn’t the case for other territories. There were places that still hadn't even managed to clear out all of the monsters from the initial wave. And while it wasn’t to the extent of Japan, Russia and China in particular were yet struggling to exterminate the comparatively higher-ranked monsters that spawned within their borders, for example.

In light of these reasons, it was difficult for Sung Hyunjae to continue to remain in Korea. The overseas influence he’d so painstakingly labored to cultivate the last three years could end up becoming jeopardized with a slight misstep.

Sung Hyunjae released an exaggerated sigh.

“Perhaps a spot of kidnapping is in order.”

“Do you not feel apologetic towards Section Chief Song-nim at all, sir?”

“I think it rather past due for my dear Chief Song Taewon to take an overseas excursion as well, no. He’s been in Korea for far too long. I’ll make certain to submit an appropriate personal use fee to the Awakened Management Division in exchange for the loan, of course.”

I’m sorry, Section Chief Song-nim, Kang Soyoung apologized internally, without real genuineness. At least if the two of them absconded together, the rest of them could breathe a sigh of relief for a while.

“Please at least give us a heads up, sir, so we can make preparations in advance. The Guild building may go up in flames, otherwise. They won’t even offer us fire insurance, on account of the number of high-ranked Hunters we employ.”

“I shall have to attempt to coax him to accompany me willingly once more, first. What might be a popular lipstick brand as of late, lass, would you know. It appears that my ‘Partner’ has picked up a new hobby.”

If he’d heard, it was something Han Yoojin would have gone blue in the face trying to refute. Remarking ‘he seemed to have his nails painted, too,’ Kang Soyoung took out her phone.

The first thing I saw when I opened my eyes was an unfamiliar ceiling. Though, to be accurate, it wasn’t really that unfamiliar, strictly speaking. Since it was somewhere I’d lodged at before.

“Hyung, are you alright?”

I heard Yoohyunie’s voice. When I blinked, his face came into focus too. I vaguely thought to myself that I seemed to recall seeing something weird clipped onto my dongsaeng’s hair earlier, before I’d lost consciousness again.

“Ahjussi, sir, are you okay?”

Yerimie’s voice flitted over as well. Peace, Chirpie, and Velare were also present. I attempted to push myself up, but no strength would enter my limbs.

“Stay laying down. He said you’d be out of commission for a day at least, right.”

“How long has it been?”

“One night. It’s morning now.”

These guys wouldn’t have happened to stay up the whole night, would they… They were wearing the same clothes as yesterday, for one.

“Yoohyunie, you–and you too, Yerimie–did you not sleep at all?”

“How could we possibly manage to sleep, sir? And losing a night’s rest is nothing, anyway. Even without being Awakened, sir, people around my age can stay up all night no problem.”

How nice it must be, to be young. Not that I was all that old either, but still. I asked if everything had been alright in the meanwhile, even if it had only been a single night. Apparently, both Myungwoo and Noah had stopped by overnight. Though, owing to the ongoing attention Seok Hayahn’s research lab currently required, neither of them had been able to stay for long.

Absently listening to Yoohyunie and Yerimie’s nagging, I opened up my inventory.

A different description tag that before had shown up. If it was Fire-attribute monsters’ magic cores, it seemed likely that there should be a good few laying around Haeyeon.

“Yoohyun-ah, make arrangements for the magic stone for me, would you. You've got some S-rank ones, right? Or maybe even an SS-rank one, potentially.”

At my words, the corners of my dongsaeng’s mouth tugged down into a frown. It was a clearly disapproving expression. Even Yerimie, who was supposed to be oblivious, pinned me down with narrowed eyes as well. 

“And what, exactly, are you trying to do now, ahjussi, sir?”

“Y’know, that new blade Yoohyunie has. Upgrading that.”

“Eh? You, ahjussi, sir?”

“It’s a bit of a peculiar blade, y’see. Ah, right–Yerim-ah, let’s plan to go into a Dungeon together later, too. There’s someone I’d like for you to meet.”

“I already heard that there’s been another weird person that’s gone and attached themself to you, ahjussi, sir.”

‘Weird person,’ she said. Yoohyunie, that guy, how exactly had he gone about describing him to her. In any case–he was someone that would become your instructor, you know. Maybe I should bring along a fruit basket as an appreciation gift, when I headed back. I probably should’ve asked him what his favorites were. 

“We can do it after you recover. You can’t even get up right now.”

“I just feel a bit weak–but I seem to be alright, otherwise.”

Telling them to rest, and that I’d get some rest as well, I closed my eyes. Even if my body was currently weakened and the tasks ahead of me piled high, my heart felt significantly lighter. We were lacking in not only intel, but also in practical strength. I was confident that we could yet manage to figure out a way to pull through, if only those outside bastards would keep from meddling, but there was no real measure we could take to ward off their interventions.

But now–not only the Newcomer, but the one called Young Chaos as well; seemingly trustworthy Transcendents had appeared. Not to mention, he was apparently the strongest of them all. It was a feeling akin to finally coming across a boat, after drifting aimlessly across a wide expanse of water for so long. 

Even if I couldn’t put complete faith in him just yet–even then. Shouldn’t I be able to at least entrust the ones I cared about to him at the very end, at least. Breathing a thin sigh, I slipped back into sleep.

A) it was a kind of instinctual sense. like how she’d suspected han yoohyun might be a dragon as well; it’s because she thought that a born s-ranks’s distinctively anomalous feeling, was indicative of him being a different species. she went and pressed sung hyunjae about it directly ^^

Q) s-ranks have immensely sturdy bodies, right… then, is their mental fortitude greater than that of an un-Awakened person as well? like they receive less stress, for example…. or don’t get depressed… that kind of thing. A) fortitude is included among the stats that level up corresponding to rank after Awakening. cases do exist where, due to an uneven distribution of stats, one may end up with particularly low fortitude; but, typically, mid-ranked and higher Awakened tend to possess greater mental fortitude than most un-Awakened. as a result, unlike low-ranked Hunters, Hunters who are mid-ranked or above will generally adapt quickly even on their first foray into a Dungeon. during the story, bak yerim also displayed a distinct lack of fear when dealing with monsters. han yoojin, too, was also able to withstand the trauma of losing his keyword application target better than he normally would, while the buff to his mental fortitude stat applied by the Requital(보답) Skill was activated.

A) because kang soyoung is a melee combat class when dragon-less, after awakening, she attempted to shear her hair short as close combat Hunters typically tend to do. kang soyoung’s oppas dissuaded their dongsaeng by telling her that a dragon would probably like someone similar to itself better, and that she might not have wings, but that tying her hair high would make it resemble a tail. thanks to that, kang soyoung ended up growing out her hair, and instead of calling her hairstyle a ‘ponytail,’ says that it’s a ‘dragontail’ ^^ *’tmi’ in kr vernacular is just used to indicate a mundane/irrelevant extra tidbit, not indicating ‘oversharing’ as in eng

A) velare looks up to chirpie, who is stronger than herself and knows how to fly. chirpie took a liking to velare because she’s sparkly, and it likes the cool sensation [of her scales]. originally, velare looked up to the immensely strong liette as her leader, but upon seeing chirpie sit on top of sung hyunjae’s head (when shj > liette in strength), thought chirpie is even stronger! and decided to become chirpie’s follower. that’s why, generally, chirpie instigates incidents and velare follows right along ^^

A) it was able to faintly sense the artificial Source’s power, but as it was the ‘unintelligent’ chirpie side that picked up on it, it was unable to pinpoint the truth of the matter. its motivation was more along the lines of ‘i can feel the strongest power (coming from here), but look, i’m even higher than that’ ^^ later on, it’s because it’s aware that he’s an artificial Source, and locked onto him as such. sung hyunjae tends to refrain from overtly antagonizing han yoojin’s ‘kids,’ usually.

A) (han gyeol) in the beginning, sung hyunjae merely saw han gyeol as being a fragment of his own ‘self.’ far from considering him an independent entity of his own right, in short. eventually, he comes to accept him as ‘one of han yoojin’s children.’ though at first, he only bothers having him around as a means to humor han yoojin, as time comes to pass, he begins to develop an interest in han gyeol as an existence with his own merits.  among han yoojin’s children, he’s the one that [sung hyunjae] feels the most conscious of/interested in^^ part of it can be attributed to how [sung hyunjae] ends up being both observer and active participant in the process of [han gyeol] becoming separated from him, achieving independence, and then finally embarking on a journey to find his own place. as a result, he does think somewhat highly of him, all things considered. he’s quite magnanimous towards han gyeol, relatively speaking. the likelihood of han gyeol becoming categorized as a more ‘exceptional’ existence to [sung hyunjae] ultimately hinges on the kind of progression he will show. as han gyeol was born from sung hyunjae, if [han gyeol] is able to become more assured of his own ‘self’ and become a truly independent existence, sung hyunjae will likely come to show a greater level of interest in him. (han yoohyun) sung hyunjae feels no emotions or interest towards han yoohyun. this is because he has gleaned the truth of han yoohyun’s innate nature(특성)–that the human charade he puts on is realized solely through han yoojin. as han yoohyun without han yoojin is simply an ‘organism’, the need to pay him any mind disappeared entirely. that is why, after the first half, he doesn’t even bother to antagonize(provoke) han yoohyun. as he doesn’t view han yoohyun as an independent entity, and considers han yoojin to be his master, when sung hyunjae initiates a conversation, etc., with han yoohyun, his conduct is no different from if he were interacting with han yoojin himself. in the beginning, he supposed that han yoojin ought to let go of han yoohyun so that he could return to being a ‘flame’; but at present, he’s now of the mind that han yoohyun is necessary for han yoojin’s mental stability. however, the kind of change of heart he might still show is uncertain.

A) it wasn’t fleshed out in detail, but apart from basic encryptions, they also utilized difficult-to-parse signals that would prove challenging for anyone that wasn’t an s-rank Awakened to catch. additionally, they would improvise with details that were shared solely between the two of them as well.

Q) in order to clasp a leash on song taewon, who is a high-ranking government official, i imagine that plenty of marriage interview requests would’ve come in from political and commercial circles; was song taewon the type to just show his face an adequate amount at those kinds of events, or was he the type to straightforwardly refuse? if he did happen to participate in such an event, i’m curious if he’s a wallflower, or if he’s the type to engage in conversation casually ㅎㅎ A) as he had no intentions of establishing a family in any way, they were generally firmly turned down. however, rather than for political relations, for a lead to a case, he has attended a matchmaking meeting before. pre-regression–while overseas, with undercover infiltration as their objective, he and Sung Hyunjae attended a high-rank Hunter award ceremony-esque event together as well^^ for sung hyunjae, it was an immensely enjoyable time. he’s not quite to the extent of being a wallflower, but he is the taciturn and terse type.

Playing an interesting take on Saltmarsh my group is affectionately calling Pirates and Parolees. Everyone in the party is a criminal out on parole except for me, a First Mate on the vessel that was supposed to give them job experience and serve as a sort of training while out on parole. We finished our first two prologue sessions (we are easing a lot of new players into DnD so we tried to take it slow) and ended with the ship being attacked by Umberlee cultists (our Quartermaster was a plant!) our captain and 7 other crew members died.

Now I am stuck in Saltmarsh with 5 parolees who's crimes range from identity theft to serial killing, my best friend (the captain) is dead, and I can't leave the Parolees without permission from the government.

For those that are familiar with my Edge of Midnight or Baldur's Gate 3 writing, or have heard me talk about my PC Wynleth Reiden, you may recognize some names on these. Wynleth is serving as an NPC in this campaign and as the main governmental contact for the characters. Her husband Zan Caimaris (who is usually dead when he is mentioned) was alive and the Captain on The Eliza Lee. He died in the Cultist Attack (or did he? *wiggles brow in Wynleth's backstory requires him to come back very sick, we'll see if my brother sticks to that though*)

My current PC, Asta Galhearth, was best friends with Zan and one of few that knew about Wynleth and Zan's relationship. He tried to save Zan from his watery grave but a Kraken got in the way of that. A kraken also killed the crew members he tried to save and then some. He's feeling really responsible about it so he resigns from the company. We'll see where this goes lmao.

McCarthy won the votes to become speaker by promising the far-right members of the Republican conference a number of things, including that he would not agree to raising the debt ceiling without demanding cuts in federal spending. It was a plan that sounded good to those interested in cutting the government: it would essentially hold the government hostage until they got what they wanted.

But this argument mixed together two separate things: the debt ceiling, which must be lifted to enable the government to pay for money already appropriated, and the budget, which is a plan for spending money in the future. Raising the debt ceiling is about protecting the country’s financial health, and refusing to lift it would throw the country—and possibly the world—into economic chaos. Negotiating over the budget is…normal.

McCarthy is continuing to try to tumble these two things together, demanding cuts to federal spending before he will agree to raise the debt ceiling.

This is awkward for the Republicans for two reasons. First, about $7.8 trillion of the $31.4 trillion debt that now must be paid came from the Trump years, and much of it came from the 2017 Trump tax cuts on corporations and the wealthy. During the Trump years, Congress raised the debt ceiling three times.

The second reason the Republicans’ demands for cuts are awkward is that they will not actually say what cuts they want. Before the 2020 election, party leaders, including Florida senator Rick Scott, then chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee in charge of getting Republicans elected to the Senate, called for cuts to Social Security and Medicare. Those take up a big portion of the annual budget: Social Security alone takes about 21%. Throughout January, Republicans have echoed calls to cut the programs, only to face a backlash.

So they have now backed off on demanding those cuts. On January 20, Trump, who in 2021 pumped up the idea of using the debt ceiling to get their way, warned Republicans not to cut “a single penny” from Social Security and Medicare. On Sunday, McCarthy said that such cuts were “off the table” (although he also insisted that the Republicans simply want to “strengthen” the programs, and Republican proposals that include that language call for raising the age for eligibility, so who knows?).

For their part, President Joe Biden and the Democrats have said that they will not negotiate over the debt ceiling. It is vital to pay the nation’s debts—debts already incurred, many of them under Trump—and the security of that debt must not be questioned.

But they have made it clear they are happy to negotiate the budget, which is, as I say, a normal part of doing business.

McCarthy, in contrast, is caught between the rhetoric of the party for the past several years and the reality of the debt issue. He has to deal with the fact that a few of the farthest right members say they won’t lift the debt ceiling under any circumstances. He also has to appease a number of far-right Republicans who say they will not agree to raising the debt ceiling without negotiating a plan for significant cuts to federal spending going forward. This is actually not true, but the debt fights of 1866 and 1879 are not widely known, and in any case, their next point accurately reflects the outcome of both of those fights: “[T]he United States must never default on its financial obligations,” they said. “Raising the debt ceiling is not a negotiation; it is an obligation of this country and its leaders to avoid economic chaos.”

Deese and Young insisted that McCarthy “commit to the bedrock principle that the United States will never default on its financial obligations.”

They then turned to the budget issue, asking when McCarthy and the House Republicans would release a “detailed, comprehensive” budget. Biden’s will come out on March 9, and normally the two sides would negotiate over the different proposals. But the Republicans won’t say what they’re planning to do.
