#and then you end up at 'the rape victim/chronically ill person/etc. shouldn't be the main character because that's Too Much'

One type of basically well-meaning media criticism that drives me up the wall is when the person writing it has made the reasonable observation that a work has done something problematic, and they have a little familiarity with problematic tropes in general, but they have no understanding of why those tropes are problematic and maybe they just haven't seen or read a lot of stuff. So then you get to hear about how a TV show that used rape as a plot point (admittedly in an unimaginative and unthoughtful way) shot it in a salacious, exploitative way, even though it's a cut-to-black scene when no nudity. Or you get to hear about how Tess Durbeyfield was fridged.
#related is when the person has clearly heard a work praised for handling a sensitive topic in a certain way#and then they assume that's the ONLY right way#that bugs me worse because it's often the most cautious and 'tasteful' types of depiction that get the thumbs up#and then you end up at 'the rape victim/chronically ill person/etc. shouldn't be the main character because that's Too Much'
