Genuinely interested in what you think about Bucky being perceived as female-coded in some parts of the fandom. I read that thread years ago and agreed with because it sounded logical, but now I'm not so sure. Recently found out about the existence of this Tony Stark meta essay called "Tony Stark as the most female-coded superhero" and they use the same arguments: loss of agency, playing the damsel in distress role more often than their counterpart, etc. I can't take "fm-coded" seriously anymore

idk how long this will end up but to preface whatever we do end up with: 1) im a nonbinary lesbian so my perception on what it means to be a woman and femininity in general is not going to be what a lot of other peoples is and 2) im a few months out from getting a degree in gender studies. take that for what you will. no i will not be arguing about this in my inbox.

to be frank, in my opinion, bucky being female coded is bullshit. not only is it bullshit, i have seen it used as a weapon by so many white women and terfs that even if it were true, i wouldnt care! whoever came up with the term “woobify” (which i have most often seen used in reference to how tony stark is treated) needs to tell bucky stans that they aren’t exempt. a lot of them see bucky being a victim as something that needs a continuation into every other part of his life, hence why he’s so often put into these weird dynamics with his ships and given traits he’s never displayed on screen.

i keep thinking of disclaimers to make in anticipation of people coming to my inbox crying so here’s another: if you are a woman or someone who feels a close connection to certain parts of womanhood, me saying bucky isnt woman coded in no way takes away from you identifying with him or parts of his story. that is personal. a woman’s personal relation to him is not reliant on “woman coding” as i’ve seen a lot of white women and terfs suggest, not does it strengthen the existence of such coding. coding is created within the original media, not within the fandom.

i also just realized ive been using the term woman coded rather than female coded, but i think subconsciously there is a reason for that that ties into one of my main points pretty well: the mcu stan’s definition of “female” coding relies on stereotypes, not about female roles, but about what it means in their opinion to be a woman. the issue with this is they take traits they think only exist in (cishet) women and use them to deem these (cishet) male characters as woman coded when in fact these traits are not exclusive to women and enforce weird standards upon people who are women that might not be cis or het or share these traits!

tony stark being short and bucky having long hair is not what would make them woman coded. bucky being rescued by a man while woozy is not what would make him woman coded. bucky being submissive to pierce when LITERALLY BEING BRAINWASHED is not what would make him woman coded. and perhaps a harsh wake up call: bucky’s story hinging around loss of agency issues and trauma in no way shape or form is what would make him woman coded. does it perhaps make him easier for many women to relate to? yes. but is this something exclusive to women? no. a vast majority of trauma victims are going to relate to him, and chalking up trauma to being something female makes me feel really funny.

i know exactly what thread youre talking about lmfao and its right up there on my shit list next to the childlike bucky post. theyre actually very similar now that i think about it ... but anyways. now that ive listed my woes about what doesnt make a character woman coded, what actually would! AND HERE IS WHERE WE GET INTO AN ACTUAL CASE OF WOMAN CODING! mr prequel series anakin skywalker aka my shakespearean downfall dilf. why is he seen as a valid example of woman coding? i will tell you.

the thing about woman coding is that its meant to subvert heteronormative tropes while remaining self aware of that to exploit and emphasize the change. DO YOU HEAR ME? SELF AWARE! anakin is given many of these stupid stereotypical traits i mentioned before, but they arent reliant on physical appearance at all. they are reliant on roles. padme is the levelheaded senate leader, the one with power and stability, while anakin is hotheaded and frankly a bit whimsical while he struggles for his own type of power and control. another classic example of woman coding (which i actually wrote a paper on last semester in my men and masculinities class) is heathcliff from wuthering heights, whose counterpart to his coding is cathy. both men have that whimsicality in common that contrasts heavily with how we would expect them to act. bucky does not act like them at all.

the reason that this is different from bucky and steve’s ‘damsel in distress’ argument is the self awareness i mentioned before. not to mention the weird heteronormative standards being applied as requirements for their gay relationship to be seen as valid because it “fits the narrative” but .. anyways.

anakin and heathcliff both have their subverted traits played up in a way that shows off how ridiculous the women usually written in their roles are forced to act. its tongue in cheek, because woman coding is not only about individual traits, but about how the character interacts with the story because of this as a whole. bucky is often seen as woman coded because he is put into these situations where he is “rescued” by someone that half his stans see as his love interest (steve my baby im sorry) when hes really only rescued maybe twice? at azzano and from the water when the helicopter crashed. only one of those is a real damsel in distress situation. all of the others are cases where hes fighting his own way out ????? bucky doesnt just sit around waiting for a “real man” to get off his ass as that post suggested but i digress.

anyways. mcu stans lack any self awareness that would be required even if bucky and tony were woman coded. calling them woman coded does not count as self awareness! the real self awareness comes with recognizing that woman coding doesnt actually make these characters women and it doesnt mean they forever belong in these “female” roles. mcu stans take the stereotypes they pick out at face value and use them to say “look! bucky is a bottom!” or to continue taking away his agency by ignoring all of his other actions and traits that dont fit in to this mold theyve made around the idea that he needs a man to save him or boss him around. his story as a whole is the only thing that would make him woman coded and seeing as there is no self awareness of this shown, no attempts to subvert, he displays little to no traditionally feminine traits, and loss of agency on its own is not something that only applies to women ...

in short: in my opinion, bucky is not woman coded. mcu stans just like rolling with stereotypes that rely around cis bodies and straight relationships. the end.

okay but,, let’s talk for a moment about jake and amy,, ive been thinkin bout this for yeARS but for some reason recently it just won’t leave my head and guys just,,, hear me out okay

i’m fascinated by their work dynamic like not their relationship i mean that def plays into it as well but literally HOW each of them work and how they fit so well together bc of it

we’ll start with amy, yeah? she’s a nerd without a doubt her father is a cop and she’s been living with cop stories for years probably grew up on shitty cop shows too and fell in love with it (a bit similar to jake right? besides the point but a fun fact to throw in) HERE’S THE THING my girl puts an emphasis on studying and hard work. she wants to be a cop? she gotta focus every little part of herself to getting there (also there’s her art degree which is so cool but unfortunately will not be talked about rn) so here’s the thing, aight? she is not a naturally gifted cop (see the latest ep where she mentions you can’t be good at puzzles. oc you can. some people see the world differently and can piece things together like that. but she makes up for all of that in HARD WORK AND FOCUS) and i could go on but this brings me to....

JAKE PERALTA offspring of a douchebag and an arT TEACHER we all know our girl karen she’s a mess but a girl has passion and little boy jakey here knows nothing about cops except buildings exploding!! chasing german bad guys!!! propelling from roofs!!!!!!! and that’s enough for him to follow his dreams. but here’s where he lucks out. this boy can solve a fucking puzzle. we don’t see it all too often in canon (i cant even think of any examples rn jus trust me) but he hella cares and jus,,, hella wants these cases solved. he doesnt work hard. he doesnt know what paperwork is. but he can,,, jus do it.

the thing about police work tho is u cant get there on luck OR hard work alone. and u can see that, even tho jake and amy approach their job comPLETELY differently, theyre very evenly matched (the bet, anyone?) which is why it’s pretty impossible to say which one is the best detective bc theyre,,, best together (was that sappy enough)

no but here’s where it gets fun, bc u can rly imagine the places this dynamic takes them.

like jake working late on a random case bc he can’t figure out the solution and it Bothers him especially if it was something a bit more high profile with a few more stakes bc my boy cares sm

not to say amy doesn’t care but she has a p professional line like when she’s not working she can let go (unless jake is the victim which is like evERY OTHER CASE NOW dont mind me) but she can go home and not worry about it theyll get him tomorrow its fine cases like these dont solve themselves overnight anyway they still have time

but then u can imagine jake getting so stressed over not knowing the answer to like,, idk say a home robbery and he let the little girl use his computer for a sec to play games something that gets a little personal yknow (also jake has such a weak spot for children dont get me started on this) and he can’t!! stop!! worrying!!

and amy, gods blessing to this earth, goes over the case with him at home bc she knows he’ll lose sleep over this and she offers angles that lil jakey never could think of bc he’s just so weirdly invested and she just keeps talking bc theyve gotten to the point where they know how they each function they know how to help each other out and eventually something she says will match up with something he was thinking except, like, from another angle and it!! MAKES SENSE!!!! and jake GETS it and tada!! all solved!! except jake, sweet child, wants to go to the precinct Immediately to solve it and amy has to be like babe its 11pm it can wait lets go to sleep

and just etc etc etc etc

of course it works the other way around as well. bc amy can bury herself in her work and forget to breathe sometimes. bc she needs to get thru all her paperwork and ALSO jakes to spellcheck it meanwhile going thru all the open cases and dealing with the weird shit that comes in and also sometimes (always) its hard to focus with jake just across from her so she kicks herself a little on particular days she just Cant and jake!!! knows he’ll talk about her cases with her just casually (she talks out loud when she’s solving cases its Cute) and oc his perspective is hilarious so he’ll come up with the most ridiculous scenarios and it just,,, calms her down,,, gets her to think outside the box a little

(oc sometimes he doesn’t catch it until she’s in a full blown panic attack and that’s a whole different thing it requires less talk about cases and more kisses)

anyway that’s all i love my dumb children and how much they love and support each other thanks for coming to my ted talk bye

Here’s my new Sole Survivor: Name: Moira “Moxie” Oxford Age:28 Pronouns/Identity: Ze/Zir Agender Ethnicity: Korean-American Career: conscripted into US Air Force Sexual Orientation: Lesbian S: 6 P: 1 E: 6 C: 1 I: 8 A: 1 L: 5 Ze’s a no nonsense, straight forward, punch the problem away kinda sole. They’re smart enough to problem solve, but prefer the “physcial” touch. Brass knuckles and tire irons are zir favorite, and Moxie will never turn down a drink. They’re Ambidextrous, Trilingual (Korean, Mandarin, and English), Hates sweets and children, loves dogs and robots. Ze only talks when ze has to.

Okay The Interesting Part, zir pre-war story: So to fix the crap start story without messing with the start me up mod, ive just head canoned a better reason for Nate, Shaun, Sanctuary Hills, and the disapointingly unrealistic forced career of Lawyer for “Nora” Okay so before being sent out to fight in the war Moxie had a normal life in the city working for the air force as a spy pilot and enemy chatter translator. Not Married, no kids. Then when Moxie gets shot down and shipped home Ze wakes up in the hospital with a whole new fake life. No explanation, no warning, just everything has been changed around them. Suddenly Moxie’s married, not only the most boring man in all of existence, but a man ze’s never heard of, much less met and married. Nate Noname, He talks as if theyve been married for years, calls ze she and Moira, zir birthname. Too weak to fight ze is taken back to what looks like a hastly constructed “American Dream” Levittown cul de sac, almost like a movie set. I mean theyre arent any other buildings anything like these “perfect” show model houses anywhere in Boston. Not to mention its smack dab in the middle of the Minutemen National Historical Park for gods sake. Once there it becomes apparent how deep this deceptive life replacement has gone. There was wedding pictures ze never posed for, knick knacks from their childhood. Their birth certificate, ID, social security card, bank accounts, hell even their answering machine ALL have “her” “married” name on them, even zir voice on the answering machine. Ze calls their parents, just to be congratulated on the wedding, they hang up before ze can get more information from them. All zir old contacts act this way, even ex girlfriends and old friends who know ze would NEVER marry a man. Ze gets desperate and calls zir superior officer in the Air Force only to be told “she” has never been in the armed forces and flatly deny that ze was shot down or ever even a pilot to begin with. Zir dog tags are gone, and so is their hap arnold airforce wings tattoo. The study has a diploma for a law degree in their maiden name. The neighbors all talk as if “she’s” their best friend, a perfect neighbor, baking pies and hosting game night, dismissing zir claims of being Moxie the pilot and not Moira the housewife and lawyer. when ze rushes back to their old apartment a few days later someone else lives there, no record or even the slightest mark that ze lived their for 8 years. Even the specific burn patterns on the counter from zir cooking fiasco, gone. If it wasnt for zir memories ze would have to believe this was always zir life, Moira Noname, wife to Nate, lawyer, homeowner, and social butterfly. Except none of it is true. weeks go by like this, ever new way ze thinks of to get away foiled, always corralled back into suburban hell with a wave and a smile. 2 days before the bombs fall Moxie’s nearly lost zir mind, zir identity. Ze’s starting to doubt their old life. It’s been 6 months since ze woke up, the only anchor Ze’s got left to their old life is the unwavering conviction that this cant be my real life because I would never identify as a woman again, and I defiently wouldnt marry a man. Still, Ze is nearly resigned to this fske life, stuck in a zombie like depression. Nate never wavers, always watching always cheerful, like he cant hear zir cuttting responses to his lovey dovey newlywed talk.Ze decides He’s either brainwashed or extremely dedicated. Ze sleeps on the couch, every attempt at renting an apartment or even a hotel room ending in excusses that the resources are need by the war effort, rooms always full, rental applications always lost. Back to the two days before the bombs, Nate suddenly starts panicing, exclaiming its time its time! Its okay honey ill get you to the hosptial just breathe, forcing “her” into the car off to the hosptial. The doctors act as if “shes” going into labor despite the obvious lack of a baby belly. The give zir something, ze passes out. When Moxue wakes up theres a baby in zir arms and that freak of nature Nate Noname beaming next to zir. He’s named it shaun. Its a real newborn, looking just as Korean as its “parents”. Moxie goes back “home” in a daze, baby in tow. Where did this infant come from, did they steal it from some poor couple, and how can Moxie be expected to take care if it!! Ze hates kids. Moxie cant love this strangers baby, but ze feels sympathy for it, ripped from its real life. Ze wont abandon it entirely, but their is no emotional connection to him. The day the bombs fall feels like a dream. Its like Ze’s walking on air the whole way to the vault, going as slow as possible, seeing the bombs fall would mean it wasnt a trick, even if they killed zir it would be worth it to get a final sense of reality. Nate waits for zir as ze waltzes down the paths out of sanctuary. Whatever or whoever has tied him to zir fate has throughly done their job, he seems to be ready to die for this role he’s playing. The baby, he’s holding it. Nate wont go in the vault without zer. Moxie’s not heartless enough to end the life of an innocent child. If it were only Nate she’d gladly watch that fucker burst into flames. But no, the child hasnt done anything to deserve this. So Ze gets on the platform, relieved when the ICBM screams overhead. It really is the end. Zir’s last thought before the platform pulls them in is “whose guinea pig am I going to be now?”

Im gonna leave it opened ended meaning it could either be a really elaborate military experiment on one of their own soldiers to see if someone can be broken through sheer mental force into accepting a reality they know is false, OR ze had an compelte mental break and made up a fake life for themselves, either life could be the fake one. In the military version Nate is a sadistic yet dedicated solider playing a role for science and his country, shaun stolen from some poor couple shipped off to an interment camp. In the mental break version she really was married and pregnant, Nate watching helplessly as his wife looses her mind, trying to keep their life together. So yeah hope you like the idea. I prefer the militsry experiment version myself. I just really like this headcanon as it gives a great explanation for why Nate and Shaun feel so disconnected, distant, fake, or just plain boring from the sole survivor. Esp if youve played more than once. i mean the plot is only interesting the first time, after that i was like shaun who? Fuck adult shaun by the way. hes a stuborn racist bastard.

i see what you mean… sorry you feel like you’re wasting your time, i’m sure not everyone is thinking that :/ it’s ok to be unsure!! and i don’t have a Profession™ at all either, it’s more like. i want to learn how to think and be critical and do research and All of That!! except if you want to get into science, you don’t have to worry too much about your degree -as long as you do it well, people are interested in diverse types of education for diverse jobs i think :) do you know what you want to do in the broad sense? science, social sciences, arts, literature…? but yeah feeling  like you’re settling is exactly what’s holding me back as well, i feel u anyway you’ve probably heard this all before, sorry if i sound like i’m demeaning the struggle :( i know it sucks
