Aurora Borealis (Jiang Cheng x Reader) Chapter 11

Summary: Zhu Ran'En (Reader) has always been forced to fight for her life through schemes and lies, betrayal and cruelty. However, Jiang Wanyin who grew up in Yunmeng and lived a complicated life full of obstacles, did not have to play these games. Therefore, when he has to face the cruelty of noblemen and the royal family, he has to ask the Imperial Princess for help. Will they manage to dodge all the life threatening dangers the snake Zhu HuaJin and the Second Prince is throwing at them?

“Who are you?!” Jiang Wanyin yelled at the assassin. You decided to stand back, only listening to the interrogation. After all, you were used to different methods when you wanted someone to speak. Wanyin could handle it on his own.

“They’re not talking” Lan Wangji said quietly from beside you.

“They’re probably trained to endure torture… I have no idea what we can do about it” you sighed.

“Are they familiar to you, your highness?” Wei Wuxian piped up as he arrived in front of you. It seemed Jiang Cheng gave up asking questions as he joined you with his brother. It was pointless for now.

You furrowed your eyebrows in thought.

Those men were wearing black, like many other assassins, carried the kind of weapons anyone can buy at a market. Nothing was indicating that they belonged to a noble house or secret organization.

Then you remembered something.

The handkerchief with the symbol of the Huang house on it. The one Lan Wangji found back in Chongyang. Pulling it out from your sleeve, you gave it to Jiang Wanyin.

“Show it to them. If they react to it in any way, we might get a lead” you said, unsure of the result. If they would recognize the handkerchief, they were connected to Huang minister, if not, then… you were no further. But it was worth a chance.

“What do you expect, your highness?” Wei Wuxian asked while watching his brother approach the captured assassins again.

“A reaction… we’re in trouble if they react to that handkerchief” you sighed. Your friend’s silence indicated his nervousness and how serious he was taking the situation. You watched the scene unfold in front of you.

Jiang Cheng’s PoV.

The sect leader stood in front of the assassins, feeling several pairs of eyes on his back. He had no idea if her highness’ idea about showing that handkerchief to these men was right, but they had nothing else left to do. The assassins were not giving out information and Wanyin was against torture. He had much on his conscience, he didn’t need more blood sticking to his hands.

Wanyin pulled out the handkerchief and showed it to the assassins. He was eager to see any reaction but tried to rest his features in a neutral expression.

“This is what my men found in Chongyang, after an Imperial court member, a minister disappeared…” he spoke up. His eyes flashing over the assassins before they flicked up to her highness in the background. She was biting her lower lip in anticipation. He kept eye contact for a second before he continued. “One of your comrades… had a similar one on himself. So spit it out already, who are you?!”

Suddenly, one of them tried to get up on his feet but failed to do so, yet he still tried to draw the sect leader’s attention. The man was trembling, his eyes shining with fear.

“Pl-Please! Let me go! I don’t know what is going on! I was paid to attack a noble man-”

“Shut your mouth!” the leader yelled at the coward, kicking him the best he could.

“Do you recognize this?” Wanyin asked, stepping on the coward’s chest pressing the handkerchief into his face.

“N-no, I don’t! Pl-Please let me go!”

“Useless” Wanyin spit to the side and let go of the poor man who was still trembling like a leaf.

“The man who hired us… he was dressed in the same color of that crest, with the same plumeria embroidered into the fabric” the leader spoke up then. Wanyin looked at the man with furrowed eyebrows, then asked.

“What did he look like? Anything specific?”

“He wore subtle make up, like he was trying to hide his wrinkles or small scars.”

The sect leader nodded before he turned away and left them alone. His eyes landed on her highness who was chewing on her lower lip. Jiang Wanyin knew how dangerous the situation was but why was the princess so nervous? Did she know something she hid from him?

The sect leader approached her with a serious expression and lifted the handkerchief up.

“They recognized it” he hissed.

“That is a better scenario” she started nodding. “That symbol is the Huang house’s symbol. That means Huang minister is connected to this case…”

“Why is he trying to kill me?” Jiang Cheng narrowed his eyes at her.

“Because he’s the Second Prince’s subordinate” she replied plainly. The sect leader felt like a fool for not realizing it sooner. Who else would want to get rid of him? After all, he was the one who killed the generals the Second Prince manipulated into treason. He didn’t know that part up until he interrogated the generals. They told him about the Second Prince’s visit to their counties.

The princess’ eyes met his, understanding his worried expression without words. They were thinking the same thing. The reality shocked him. Never in a million years did the sect leader ever think that he’d be the one in the crossfire of the imperial family. He was a fighter, a sect leader not a schemer like the princess.

A gentle hand landed on his arm snapping his attention back to the princess. Her masked face smiled at him kindly.

“Are you alright? You seem ashen” she said quietly. Ran’En pulled on his sleeve, leading the sect leader toward a less crowded place.

Jiang Cheng scoffed but stayed silent. How could he voice his shock? Were there even words to describe how he felt? He definitely felt like a fool for one.

Then her hands cupped his face, lifting his gaze back to her. The soft skin of hers made his cheeks tingle and grow warm under her touch. His heart thumped hard against his chest as they looked at each other. Her (e/c) eyes staring straight into his soul as she was searching for something he had no idea he possessed.

“I warned you, A-Cheng” she spoke softly. “But I promised you that I’ll keep you safe.”

“I never stood in the center of a fight… my place was always on one side” he sighed.

“It must be frustrating” she replied with a nod before she motioned for him to follow her to the woods. Leaning against a tree, she crossed her arms in front of her chest, looking up at the crown of the trees with a nostalgic smile. Jiang Cheng could see how the old memories flashed across her eyes. The fond expression on her face reminded him of his youth in Yunmeng. “You know… the Second Prince was not always looking for ways to kill his brothers. When I was a child, he was a good person. He was inseparable with Crown Prince, joined at the hips all the time.”

“What changed?” Jiang Cheng asked, curious. Ran’En only told him about her life right before she was sent into exile. He couldn’t really blame her, it must’ve been a great impact on her pride.

“The woman he loved… married Crown Prince” the princess smiled sadly. “Zhang MeiYun was the daughter of a marquise from the northern borders. Both princes were deeply in love with her, but her heart has always beat for Crown Prince. Their personalities complimented each other. Though… Second Prince’s love for her never weakened and even after she gave birth to the sons of Crown Prince, he kept hoping that one day, she would leave his brother for him. The conflict only grew with the years until Zhang MeiYun died of illness after the emperor’s fiftieth birthday. Imagine how the palace turned upside down… both brothers were at each other’s throats. If the emperor himself wouldn’t have separated them, one of them would be dead today.”

“What happened then?” Jiang Cheng was eager to learn more about this tale. Secretly, he was always fascinated by love stories. The princess chuckled however, the mirth did not reach her eyes as she shook her head.

“The righteous fool the Crown Prince is, he forgave his brother” she said. “He said that MeiYun would be sad to see them fighting and left the room. Only his twin sons and the emperor have been allowed to enter his quarters, ever since.”

“You never told me about your family” the sect leader couldn’t help but blurt it out. He blushed as the princess’ head snapped to him, her eyebrows lifting up on her forehead.

“There’s not much to tell, A-Cheng” she shrugged. “My father is a good man who is currently trying to take care of my sister. Lili was informed that my sister is about to get married soon. I hope she’ll have a satisfying life.”

The sect leader’s eyes widened. He realized then that Ran’En should be married by now. At her age, other women had at least one child already. His cheeks grew warm at the thought of the princess wearing a wedding dress, kowtowing to his parents. He shook his head quickly trying to hide his blush. Why was he thinking about that now?

“Aiya! A-Cheng! Why is your face so red?!” Ran’En stepped closer to him, confusion and concern on her face as she furrowed her eyebrows. Her eyes peered into his brown ones. “Is the thought of the elders harassing you over marriage still bothering you?”

Jiang Cheng stepped away from her trying to avoid her gaze. His hands balled into fists, trembling by his sides. His heart was thumping hard in his chest as his brain was trying to unfreeze. Then the princess sighed with a chuckle and grabbed his hand.

“You’ll find someone in your own time. Love cannot be forced or hurried” she said quietly. “You will know it is her once you meet her.”

The light breeze touching his cheeks cooled them as he stared at her in surprise. The way she was looking at him made his heart skip a beat. Her (e/c) eyes shined with sadness under the warmth, her gentle smile never really reaching her eyes.

“What are you doing here? We need to go soon” Wei Wuxian walked out from behind the trees, making both of them jump in surprise. His lips pulled into a grin as he noticed their joined hands. “A-Cheng, have you finally asked her highness?”

“Asked me about what?” Ran’En looked back and forth between the brothers confused.

“Abou-”

“About your mask! How did you do it? It looks so real!” Jiang Cheng feigned shock, earning a confused, questioning stare from the princess.

“It is just a simple skin-mask the girls in a brothel use if needed” she replied with a small laugh. Her highness turned around and took off towards the camp. “Come on, we have a few guys to take care of.”

Wei Wuxian grinned at Jiang Cheng as he bumped their shoulders together. The sect leader had no idea why his brother was grinning like that but the blush still crept up on his cheeks as his hand was still burning where the princess touched it.

She-ra SPOP Season 3 theories. Part One.

Well folks, it’s been a while since I’ve done a theory or Tumblr post in general. Always meant to do this but as per usual life and other projects took over. And with the announcement of V3 unexpectedly swiftly arriving on August 2nd 2019 rather than the speculated November, like season 1 last year, now is as good a time as any.

FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAVEN’T SEEN SEASON 2, LOOK AWAY NOW!

So at the end of season 2 our deuteragonists, Catra and Adora both seemed in rather ominous situations. With Catra in what I theorise as being in Hordak’s portal, his first test subject if you will.

And Adora about to be kidnapped by Shadow Weaver. 

Noelle Stevenson recently implied that Season 3 would be where Catra and Adora would cross paths again, which brings me to my first part. 

I think that Beast Island is where Hordak has sent Catra in the portal and where SW will take Adora and this is where they will cross paths. BEAST ISLAND.

We have heard Beast Island mentioned on many occasions, mostly in Season 2 between Hordak and Catra when discussing SW’s fate. We know that it is a place that instills fear in the Force Captain and her trusty sidekick, Scorpia, so much so, that Catra risks Hordak’s displeasure and begs SW to give her anything that will give the Sorceress a stay of execution.  

But we have also heard mention of it waaaay back in s1 in Plumeria, when Perfuma tells the tale of She-Ra and how she tamed the beast of Beast Island.

It is a legend that commands enough respect for other cultures on Etheria to pass on to younger generations and immortalise it in art for posterity.And if Mara was indeed the She-ra that defeated the Beast, then that defeat occurred over a 1000 years ago.  

In the ‘Lightspinner’ episode Catra says that no one has ever returned from Beast Island, my theory as to why no one has returned is rather a case of the residents of Beast Island, wishing to be left alone, have allowed its ferocious reputation to precede it and go uncorrected as a layer of protection and is rather a bit of a safe haven of sorts from the Horde and others who may wish to cause harm. They have not joined the rebellion as they wish to be left out of it, believe they cannot beat the Horde and/or lack the technology to withstand a Horde attack. (much like the Plumerians back in s1) That those who have been sent there as a punishment have been integrated into the community that is already there or have been not allowed to leave for fear that they might spill the beans. 

*In the 1985 She-Ra, had an episode named ‘The prisoners of Beast Island’, so this could very well come into play*

Shadow Weaver did not seem as troubled by the threat that she would be sent to Beast Island which leads me to believe that the Island maybe isn’t as terrifying as the Horde children and the current Princesses believe, not to say that it will not present any challenges. 

  Being that the Horde have raised their soldiers deeply entrenched in propaganda and have more than likely kidnapped, taken as wards so the kingdoms won’t rise against them, ie Scorpia, it is not too far a stretch, that the Beast Islanders have been able to keep up the illusion.

We have also seen many characters with animal characteristics such as Scorpia, Rogelio, Octavia and the so far unnamed Orange* and Saffron Princesses we saw back in S1. I theroise that these characters are from Beast Island’s neighbouring kingdoms or may even be residents of Beast Island.

CATRA.

Over the last two seasons, Catra has geared up to be one of the most complex characters of the show, her motivations coming from deep seated issues of self worth and the trauma she has suffered at the hands of SW. 

Added onto by her complicated relationship with Adora and the deep wound of her best friend’s perceived betrayal. It has culminated in a lust for a position of power and an opportunity to show what she is capable of, born of a wish for some form of independence. *Season 1 

“Soon we’ll be calling the shots.”

However, that position of power has been granted to Catra by someone else being taken out of play, ie Adora leaving the Horde and SW being imprisoned. 

That is not to say that Catra is undeserving of the title Force Captain as she has proved herself on many occasions to be clever, resourceful, quick witted, forward thinking and has an ability to see the way the wind is blowing. (if she is a little single minded where Adora/She-Ra is concerned). She has even gone so far as to garner the begrudging respect of her subordinates, even if they do dislike her and have made that displeasure known, so she is capable of drawing others to her cause, whether just through fear, coercion and manipulation remains to be seen. 

If she is indeed being sent to Beast Island through Hordak’s portal, we might see Catra gaining her independence, power and agency, rather than being held hostage by the orders of an overseer with their own agenda. 

I have theroised before that Catra could well be a lost princess.

   We might see her on Beast Island, becoming part of the community and rising to a position of power. She could very well end up finding her own tribe and be happy to remain there until she crosses paths with Adora and SW which will result in her having a round two confrontation with her foster parent, whose manipulation of her complex feelings caused her to be exiled. 

Finding out  that SW preyed on Catra’s confused attachment towards her abuser as a way to escape, throwing one child under the bus in favour of finding the Golden Child, who is already a huge bone of contention for Catra, will no doubt sour Catra towards Adora even further. 

This is of course if Catra comes across the pair together, rather than finding Adora alone and on the run from her kidnapper. 

Another avenue of thought is that Beast Island is as harsh as everyone believes and SW brings Adora there as a place where they won’t be disturbed as SW begins to enact a plan and we begin to learn more about Adora’s background, She-Ra’s origins and what exactly Mara was up to. 

Catra just unfortunately ends up stumbling upon the pair and the three end up together, thereby giving Adora and Catra a chance to take small steps to repair their rather rocky and complex relationship as I don’t think there will ever be a time that Adora does not try to reach Catra somehow. 

(The pair have some major unresolved issues with each other, and Adora carries a large amount of guilt at leaving Catra behind, but understands it is something she had to do in order to do the right thing. And its a case of getting Catra to also come on board, do the right thing, independently and not at the behest of others.

To do this whilst making sure that Catra does not feel that she is in Adora’s shadow or beholden to anyone is where in lies the problem, until Catra sees her own self worth and stops blaming Adora and believing that she meant her deliberate harm over the years.

They have a lot to discuss with concerns to SW treatment of the pair growing up. That both of them were children and neither in a position to be able to call SW out on her abusive BS.)  

This post has gotten pretty long so I think Ill break it into sections, next time I’ll be looking at Adora/She-Ra and Mara and the rest of the Super Best Pals Trio.

So...

...I´ve recently watched the first season of She-ra, and I love the goddamn show and maybe will feel like posting positive traits in another post, but as right now, I have one major problem I´ll be focusing on since It´s been bugging me forever and I need to share it or I will explode, thank you.

Now... Adora.

Yes, that Adora. Does anyone else feel that her character is underdeveloped? She´s the protagonist and the show´s face, but compared to other characters (even secondary characters in some occasions), she feels... left behind? somehow. Now, before y´all lit your torches, please let me explain.

I like Adora a lot, like for real, I adore her (pfft), but she is plain as heck, and I just don´t get why. She has the perfect concoction of troublesome life that´d get her some serious and deep psychological issues for life, but for some kind of reason, we don´t see that on the show? Why not? I mean she´s a HORDE kid, she´d lived a lot of years at the Fright Zone, she was molded by them, raised by them, indoctrinated by them and I´m pretty sure that Shadow Weaver was not the only authority figure she��d all those years, maybe the most prominent, yeah, but the only high ranking soldier (?) in a military confinement, nah; yet, she doesn´t show any characteristics she may have  had of her past life, which is good by the end of the season, because, new life, new friends, new purpose, but by the start of the season? The first 4-5 episodes? It felt odd. The only instance I can recall is when she was unable to sleep alone. 

Now, don´t get me wrong, I don´t want her to suffer, I want all of my cinnamon rolls to be happy, find light and end the war, but she grew in a military confinement and I need to stress this out, because it doesn´t show, and it would have been awesome by the end of the season, but old habits die hard, especially when you are a soldier, and soldier life is the only thing you´d known for most of your life, I wanted to see her getting up at 5 am because Horde, doing marches because Horde, military salute everytime she saw an authoritative figure (especially Angela) because Horde, to train until her near death before Glimmer and Bow (cinnamon rolls) saw the need into showing her how to fricking relax because Horde. I wanted to see her have the weirdest traits (sit fully straight at dinner table and board game nights, be on the very edge while they were exploring or meeting someone new,...). 

I wanted her missing aspects of her old life, like machine humming or tight spaces or feeling uncomfortable with opulent stuff at Bright Moon castle, and feeling damn guilty about her missing Horde´s stuff and not getting accustomed to her new life in a matter of seconds.

I wanted to know why she´s so comfortable being She-ra, why she didn´t question being able to get into the skin of an 8ft tall goddess or why the sword chose her. I wanted her to question it: “why was I worth it?” “What have I done to deserve the sword?” “I did this, am I still worth being the chosen one?” (I wanted to see her ruminating on these thoughts forever)

Also, she being comfortable when called She-ra even in Adora´s form. This, this, could have led to a lot of emotional distress to Adora, could have made her feel worthless being Adora (now being fair, we kind of saw something akin to this thought process on Plumeria´s visit and before finding Crystal Castle), and maybe leading to a situation where she would end up mumbling something like: “my name is Adora.” under her breath after someone called her She-ra again for the thousandth time that week only.

I was expecting her to question every-little-aspect-of-everything: “Is there any other Horde kid like me?” “Do they have a chance to be good too?” “I was there too, I know how shitty the Horde is, do the other want to scape too?” “Would they leave the Horde too if I give them an opportunity?” “Is it okay for me to give them a change after all the bad things they´ve done?” “Am I that special?” 

And then see her try to recruit Horde kids into Princess Alliance and having arguments with Glimmer because: 

-”Horde kids are evil!”

-”I WAS from the Horde!” 

And Bow being the ultimate cinnamon roll.

And last but not least, I wanted to see her missing Catra just as much as the cat did OK. Like come on writers, you guys show us A LOT of moments where Catra was being her usual complicated self and still missing Adora like life itself, but Adora just? Didn´t? I get it ok New friends, new life, new family, but fuckity heck, I don´t recall and instance other than fighting, where Adora mentioned Catra´s name just because she. missed. her, duuude, she was your best fricking friend since forever, and you don´t seem to care that much? I´m sorry, but what on Earth?

I know is too late, I know that I may be caring way too much for a kid´s show, and I know that Adora has more important, bigger things to worry about now, especially now that season 2 is airing (haven´t watched it. please don´t spoiler me), but I care deeply for most of the characters of the show, and I want to see them grow and have depth and fall and fail and get up again and have redemption arcs and be happy, and... I´m going way too deep.

F - What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom?

gollygosh golighty, it is probably the Kirby fandom. if my math is correct, I’ve been a fan since 11 years and counting!

K - What character has your favorite development arc/the best development arc?

Johnny Cage from Mortal Kombat. man went from obnoxious fuckboi jackass comic relief and butt monkey of the entire franchise to an honestly funny, caring and loyal guy who’s also a shockingly good parent and can even be pretty mature and reasonable if he needs to. Midway/NRS clearly didn’t like him all that much in the OT and made him pretty cringey, but now he’s actually bearable without losing the original ego and bad sense of humour that makes him who he is. got to say, I really love him now.

P - Invent a random AU for any fandom (we always need more ideas).

Pokemon SU/MO AU where instead of protag being recruited to hunt UBs Guzma ended up being drafted into it as a half ‘community service’ to make up for what he did with Team Skull and Lusamine, and the fact he also qualifies as a Faller. It’s not totally willing or a happily made decision (sort of imagining Looker or someone strong-armed him into it), but maybe he was desperate due to having nowhere to stay let alone a livelihood after disbanding Team Skull and wanting an escape and something to do. And there’s gonna be complications, such as others like Plumeria or perhaps even Nanu disapproving of his new ‘job’ (though it’s more like they’re angrier at the guys like Looker who dragged a guy who is clearly in a bad place into their dangerous ops) and the fact Guzma has a justified phobia and probably PTSD because of Ultra Beasts and Lusamine. It’s a redemption story yes, just an alternate path instead of going back to training with Hala like he did in the games.

I’m a little surprised how few people actually try to explore how Guzma’s experience in the portal affected him, and how it may have contributed to his heel-face turn in both timelines of the games.

S - Show us an example of your personal headcanon (prompts optional but encouraged)

(hhhhh I can’t believe you remembered this one esp when i haven’t officially done anything on it but in the tags of that one post!)

The dragon form is actually closer to Raiden’s ‘true’ form than the humanlike mortal body we know best. In his truest form Raiden is a shapeless mass of sentient lightning which would blind/vaporise any mortals who saw it, so a dragon made of lightning is his next best ‘safe’ form before actually taking a mortal vessel. In this form he’s possibly the most powerful and free in his element without being in his ‘raw’ form.

This is true for all gods, who if they can’t be bothered to take a more humanoid form or an actual mortal body they will turn into an elemental dragon - the next step between dragon and mortal form is an elemental humanoid form like the unnamed gods in SZM.

Basically think of it like a weirdass Pokemon evolution line roughly like: Shapeless elemental mass > elemental dragon > elemental humanoid > human vessel

T - Do you have any hard and fast headcanons that you will die defending? 

Mortal Kombat: RAIDEN IS A GOOD PERSON WHO CARES AND ISN’T A FAILURE, YOU ARE ALL JUST MEAN.

Marvel: Tony Stark finds it easier to talk to and connect with robots and AI/VI than humans. His robots are like his kids and he’d totally have pictures of them in his wallet.

Kirby: (Game) Kirby’s impulsive, naive and childish but not a complete idiot. He often understands what’s going on and what’s at stake in serious and even pretty complex and highly dangerous situations, but he’s just the type who can put all that aside and single-mindedly focus on what needs to be done to save the day. True, he does have too-big a heart and often approaches things too simply in black and white terms, but it’s more of a merit of his that he has seen so much shit and yet can still trust and be kind even to total strangers in the direst of circumstances.

Madness Combat: Deimos is younger than Sanford (and a lot of the other characters) and isn’t as happy or ditzy as he acts a lot of the time - he’s got a fair bit of baggage for being a defector and the bloody and thankless ‘job’ he and Sanford have now. Sanford knows this, which is why he lets him off the hook [lmfao half-intended pun] for goofing around so much.

Z - Just ramble about something fan-related, go go go! (Prompts optional but encouraged.)

sooo I just really like the Kirby series? It’s such a dependable series that is so enjoyable for all ages and fans, it has excellent art and music and always hits the right amount of throwback and new innovations and rarely disappoints or fails to deliver.
