been drawing more and I get so frustrated, not with my skill level, but with my style. it's such a mishmash of so many things and it doesn't go well together at all and it makes everything look wonkier than I think anything else. My anatomy and posing and line weight and coloring and everything is not super high quality, but has significantly improved over the past couple years (imo at least and that's all that matters lol) and I know it will continue to improve the more I draw and practice!! but I have seen zero change in my style. It's this super unfortunate middle ground between realistic and anime and kind of cartoony and it doesn't work at all. And I cannot figure out how to change it
#brought to you by drawing robin yesterday and waddles today#robin's features were anime but her shape was very realistic#so it makes everything look wonky#and then waddles his hair is too anime and his face shape is too realistic and his eyes are like realistic that's trying to be anime#and it's is ugly and then his ears are like cartoony#idkkkkkkkkk. I just don't like it#this is the biggest reason I don't draw tbh#cause I will come up with ideas or poses or things that would be fun and I want to do!#and then the weird realistic/anime mix up hits and I just sit there and go >_> wat is that đŹ#and I know that so I just never draw cause I know it will frustrate me#(I do know that I'd fix this and then get frustrated with something else lol. but right now it's the one I hate)

So I think it's my first time writing and putting something out here so we'll see how it goes (part 2 perhaps?) but I hope this does ok for prompt number two, It really inspired me! <3
(@hollewdz Thanks for the inspiration [love your art btw {ok bye!}])
You were definitely dreaming. A strange spiraling tunnel of blue and purple lights streaked around you, rushing past and crackling with thunderous energy, a frying, grating roar in your ears. You were falling.
You didn't know how long you'd been falling for, but you'd only been conscious for a few seconds at this point, your last memory of getting into your bed, plugging in your phone, and falling asleep.
The thundering turbulence continued. As you strained your head to look up, you saw a point of light getting closer and closer, dim, yellow, flickering, and then you were there. In a flash of light you flew through the barrier and kept going, careening through the air like a confused dolphin, and your vision went black.
"-don't care how you do it, just make it viable!"
A door closed harshly, punctuating the blunt order with an echoing slam. Something sounded off though, like the sounds were close but their volume lowered, and lacking some sort of bass? You carefully opened the eye opposite to the side that the sounds had come from. Surprise surprise, not your bedroom. This eye was right up against a window, but the shades were mostly drawn, casting only thin rays of sunlight through into the thick, hot air. Something was off though, and the information processed backwards through your mind. The window was almost pressed against your eye, yet even inches away, you could see the entire height of the tall, carved opening. Wait, but that means...
You caught a glimpse of fuzzy shapes at the bottom of your vision and glanced down as feeling returned to your body in a flood. Your knees were poking up through the ornate, gilded ceiling, legs covered in dust, pajamas plastered with shards of lumber, gold gilding, and the remains of a rather expensive-looking chandelier the size of a small orange. Okay, so, what the fuck?
You stared at your knees, processing, panicking. Weird dream, something to do with size, either I'm big or everything's small, definitely something to tell my therapis-
"Fuck!"
A shrill yell pierced the air, bouncing around the decorative ballroom-like chamber, shortly followed by the prolonged, sequential clatter of various small unknown implements from the right, where your eye remained closed. The tantrum stopped after a few seconds, and you heard heavy breathing, eventually slowing into exasperated laughter.
"What the fuck am I supposed to do with you?"
You didn't like that. You weren't to be "done with" shit. You opened your other eye and turned your whole head to see a four inch tall woman with dark brown hair dressed in elaborate animal furs and cloaks, like something out of game of thrones, sitting against a wall near a table of sundered instruments.
"You tell me, fucker."
Loud screams, lots of screaming, more throwing things (this time at you), more screaming. Wow. You watched with mixed satisfaction and regret, this dream hit different. Little too realistic and lucid for your taste.
Tiny Cloak Lady eventually seemed to decide that throwing empty beakers and small silver cutlery sets might be less effective than whatever her desired effect was and hesitated briefly before heading for the door.
You briefly wondered if you should stop her before she reached it and threw herself at the gilded golden panel. Lot of throwing. Too much throwing.
To both of your suprise, Tiny Cloak Lady bounced painfully off of the door, which remained stoutly in place. for an awkward moment there was nothing in the room but the reverberating echo of the head-door collision. Tiny Cloak Lady let out a squeak of incredible emotional expression and remained prone on the floor for a solid minute before very slowly, very cautiously standing, straightening her cloak, nursing her wound, and glancing nervously at you, avoiding your gaze and readying herself to speak.
"S-so..."
This was of entertaining. Kinda like slapstick. My subconscious should write screenplays.
"Yeah Tiny Cloak Lady?"
She flinched as your voice thrummed around the hall, nearly falling back down again. Oh shit, It's probably really loud at that size. Why am I accommodating the dream character? Eh, it's polite.
Tiny Cloak Lady swallowed, eyes shimmering on the verge of tears.
"D-Don't h-hurt me. Please?"
As you looked into her eyes, bright with fear, startling blue, you the sliver of realization that maybe you aren't dreaming slips into your mind.
"Okay." You reply.

Some story ideas iâve had forever that ive never had the time to develop. If you want them TAKE THEM pleaseeeeeeee!!! And show them to me!! I need these fics with my whole heart T o T -Respectively giant and tiny captives wake up in a blank, alien room, no memory of how they got there, made by their captors to play a game of cooperation for their freedom (jail break? Enemies to friends/lovers? Alien world? Gov Experiment? Who knows!) -summoned to another world(medieval, magic) but everythingâs tiny, and the genius wizard who brought you here summoned you by accident. He tries to return you home but cant figure it out so youre stuck oops (wanted by the military? Learning magic? Domestic cottage core w/ wizard?) -galactic explorer crash lands on earth, but they are tiny and earth was quarantined due to âabnormally aggressive tendencies and unreasonable habitants. Also theyâre fuckin BIGâ. Found by abnormally angsty and unreasonable (but not malicious) 20-something who learns to be chill. (Galactic federation un-quarantines earth?) -giant of the forest is a local village legend, and the youth of the village do âbravery testsâ at night, leaving one of their friends in the woods for the night. Said local legend is actually an anxious mess who stays hidden from the kids each time, protecting them from the shadows while they stupidly walk through bear territory and the like (accidentally seen sometimes, always misinterpreted as aggressive and the kids run back with a scary story)

SnK Episode 68 Poll Results (for Manga Readers)
The poll closed with 146 responses. Thank you to everyone who participated!
Please note that these are the results for the Manga Readersâ poll. If you wish to see the results for the Anime Only Watchersâ poll, click here.

RATE THE EPISODE 140 Responses
The anime continues its positive streak with just over 90% of respondents rating the episode a 4 or 5. MAPPA appears to be blowing this season out of the water for most of us!
Noice
Good!
I liked it
WHICH OF THE FOLLOWING MOMENTS WAS YOUR FAVORITE? 144 Responses
We got a pretty mixed pie chart this week. To be expected, given how many moments were in this episode. At a tie with the largest pieces of the pie were Hangeâs eccentric attempt to greet the Marleyans and Erenâs gunshot figuratively hitting Sasha. Behind that two more options tied in each with 10.4% of the vote - EMAâs conversation at the shooting range and Sasha appreciating Nicoloâs cooking. This is followed closely by Erenâs mirror scene with 9.7% of the vote. Onyankopon explaining why he looks different when Sasha asks him about it took a solid 9% of the vote.
WHAT WAS THE MOST EMOTIONAL PART OF THE VISIT TO SASHAâS GRAVE? 144 Responses
This was almost too close to call, but Mikasa sitting alone managed to edge out just slightly over Connieâs âIâve lost half of meâ moment at Sashaâs grave. Trailing behind the two were Nicoloâs grief and the agreement between Papa Braus agreeing to a free meal from Nicolo.
AFTER SEVERAL TENSE AND ACTION PACKED EPISODES, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE TRANSITION TO SOMETHING MORE CALM? 138 Responses
The larger chunk of respondents are feeling relieved to get a break from the action for a few episodes. 21.7% prefer the action but donât mind a break here and there, while 21% state that they enjoy the exposition more than the action anyway, so they are content. A small handful donât care either way.Â
We needed this for another build-up to more action
I like the action but itâs important to move the story alongÂ
These just feel mandatory fillers to me.
I miss the warriors
I feel fine with it. I thought that was going to be some happy-go-me episode, but gladly it still had a serious tones.
This episode felt like a very welcome respite after the absolute shitshow that was spoilers week and....whatever the fuck chapter 137 was.Â
Nice breather of sorts, I always like seeing characters from action-heavy series in their downtime.
WOULD YOU RATHER GET A SURPRISE GREETING FROM EREN & HANGE, OR ARMIN & LEVI? 141 Responses
The vast majority of respondents would prefer the slightly less lethal greeting given by Hange and Eren at the beginning of the episode. Weâre not sure if the other 29.1% are masochists or just really love Levi and/or Armin that much more. Or perhaps theyâre intrigued by the pig piss from the filthy island devils.
ON A SCALE OF 1-5, HOW HAPPY ARE YOU TO BE BACK ON PARADIS? 139 Responses
Overall, fans are happy to be back in familiar territory and put into the perspective of the Survey Corps again. Letâs get ready to rumble!
MAPPA HAS SPRINKLED IN ANIME-ONLY ADDITIONS THROUGHOUT THE EPISODE. AS A WHOLE, HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THEM? 139 Responses
Though subtle, MAPPA did include some anime filler (such as Erenâs, erm, mouth breathing). 51.1% enjoyed the noticeable additions, while 37.4% are completely confused by the question and didnât realize there were any. A handful generally donât prefer additions but enjoyed what little ones we had this episode. A small sliver didnât care for them.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE SCENES FROM CHAPTER 107 THAT WERE PEPPERED IN BETWEEN THE MOMENTS FROM CHAPTER 106? 139 Responses
MAPPA is shuffling things around to pick up the pacing of this arc, and 48.2% of respondents are feeling very positively about it. 38.8% also feel that both the order of events in the original manga and the anime work out just fine regardless. A couple of smaller groups either felt that things were a bit off from the manga, or didnât really care either way.Â
I think it's great because it allows an episode to start and end on the same chapter if mappa ever wanted it, allowing the right twists or cliffhangers to be in the right episodes, all WITHOUT having to slow down, which I wholly appreciate.
I'm fine with the changes. Mappa is doing good job.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE CHANGE OF GABI BITING HER NAIL AND ANGRILY SAYING ERENâS NAME IN HER JAIL CELL? 142 Responses
Nearly half of voters feel that both MAPPAâs take and Isayamaâs original take work just fine for Gabiâs character. 28.9% prefer the animeâs take on Gabiâs reaction to all that happened, while 14.8% feel that her more defeated posture in the manga makes more sense for her character.Â
I'm a mix of both? Her defeated posture implies that she's not happy with the way things worked out with them in jail and Zeke betraying them. On the other hand, her angry face is realistic to the scene too because it implies she really blames Eren for their current predicament.
She looks like some female version of young, angry Tarzan. This time Mappa should have kept the original postures, because the defeated Gabi feels to be more realistic, than the crazy anime one.Â
I think they both work but the anime's take might be the anime team beating us over the head that she's just like Eren when he was young.
Makes it clear to the anime-onlies that she really is psychotic
Gabi sucks
HOW WELL DO YOU THINK MAPPA NAILED THE TRANSITION OF EREN SHOOTING THE GUN, TO SASHA TAKING THE HIT? 141 Responses
The response to MAPPAâs take on Erenâs shot inadvertently hitting Sasha was overwhelmingly positive, with only a few people saying that they could have done better with it.Â
Eren shot linked to Sasha's death was awesome. Mappa is nailing it!
THE PART WHERE JEAN, SASHA AND CONNIE ARE TRYING TO GUESS WHAT A PORT IS WAS CUT OUT, WITH ARMINâS NARRATION INSTEAD CUTTING INTO THE SCENE. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT IT? 140 Responses
Exactly 50% felt that while having that JSC characterization would have been very much welcome, theyâre okay with that small detail missing from the manga (granted, it was at least acknowledged by one panel being animated). 25.7% have a more nonchalant response, stating that if it helps with the pacing, theyâre fine with small cuts like this. 10.7% are just let down by JSCâs lack of characterization in the anime overall and didnât appreciate even more being taken from their characterization in this episode.Â
I was more so interested in our Paradis Peeps talking about newly discovered technology but Iâm happy with what we got.
Not dissappointed since I understand you can't show everything but I love them so sad
Why was it animated then?! Iâm so confused
Normally I don't like it when they cut corners like this, but I wasn't fond of that scene in the first place so it's okay.
If by "anime" you mean the entirety of it including the past 3 seasons, then option 3. I'm always going to be salty about how much they took out or changed for these three during the uprising arc. So far mappa has done okay with them, I guess.Â
Would have been a funny JSC moment, but it was really absolutely pointless. In manga format it works as just background words on a panel. Animating it takes seconds of an episode that could be used elsewhere. So I'm fine with it being cut out.
SOME HAVE COMPLAINED THAT THE ENDING SCENE OF EREN REPEATING HIS MANTRA INTO THE MIRROR LACKED THE IMPACT IT HAD IN THE MANGA. HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THAT? 138 Responses
43.5% were receptive of the anime only shots, but favor the way the scene was portrayed in the manga more. 34.1% felt that both versions were done well, with only 9.4% feeling that the impact was largely the same (if not better). Based on the write-ins, the main complaint seems to be the lighting/color scheme of the scene not quite meeting expectations, or that MAPPA made Erenâs back look weird.Â
theyll make up for it when eren screeches at hange next ep
Impact was there, art just felt a bit wonky and toned down the scene overall. 9/11
This goes into my criticism of the color palette and shading style mappa uses, which is far more subdued. The contrast is lowered and the scene is very dark, and there is little rim lighting, so while the actual lineart has far more detail, the detail in the lighting is reduced. Damn I really am writing a wall text aren't I? I prefer Wit Studio's art style a lot but Mappa has honestly been doing great so I couldn't care less, manbun Eren is hot.
I prefer the manga version. I think the anime version have weirds shadows in eren's back. Plus the mirror don't have the same energy, less impactful
Cool scene in the anime, an unforgettable blow to the brains in the manga
Idk
Most of the time seeing things for the first time is what's really impactful. Feel this way towards Armin's transformation in the boat as well. It was definitely less impactful than when you first read it in the manga.
I understand the fandom because this moment was very popular when the chapter was out. I think that in the anime Eren lacks the anger he had in the manga. His voice was too calm while repeating his mantra. .
WHY DOES HIS BACK LOOK LIKE THAT
I didn't care for it in the anime, it was really underwhelming.Â
I think most people are annoyed about the lighting than the impact. Itâs a bit too dim and the lamp hides Erenâs new hair.
Didn't like the anime version at all
The animation wasn't good and they totally fucked his hair, face, and body up. Although the added shots were definitely welcome.
Eren could've been sexier/animated better, I hope they do better next ep đ
WE WILL ASK YOU AGAIN. HOW WILL THE ANIME DEAL WITH MIKASAâS HIZURU TATTOO/SYMBOL? 135 Responses
With Mikasa meeting Kiyomi presumably being inevitable in episode 69, we wondered if any opinions had changed on this. 34.1% feel hopeful that the tattoo will be retconned into the anime and that we will see this scene faithful to the manga. 28.9% think that Mikasa will happen to have some kind of embroidery on hand already. 25.9% donât want to make a call either way, and a small handful think Mikasaâs going to just pull out an embroidery kit and go with it, lol.
The embroidery will be on the inside of her bandage.
Japanese are very taboo about tattoos because of the Yazuka... it will 100% be the embroidery.
I don't know but I hope it gets retconned. Never liked the embroidery thing.
It won't be included
Letâs just... ignore it..
I really really hope MAPPA retcons Mikasa's tattoo next episode. This will be the one retcon I will absolutely celebrate. Plus, it's not really a retcon if they're just amending Wit's changes.
WE WILL ASK YOU AGAIN, AGAIN. WITH THE PACING CURRENTLY UTILIZED BY MAPPA, WHERE WILL EPISODE 16 END? 137 Responses
Uncertainty continues to loom over exactly how far MAPPA will get into this (first half of the?) season. Nearly 40% donât want to make predictions one way or another, while 23.4% feel that it wonât make it quite to chapter 122. The rest believe it will make it to chapter 122, with 17.5% feeling there will only be minor cuts, if any, and the remaining 13.1% feeling that there will be major cuts to make the feat to chapter 122.Â
116 (?) when the allied force attack paradis
122 with the amount of cuts being somewhere in between. They can cut a lot of the Gabi and Falco plotline and still have the story remain intact.
See, I'm not sure buy I'm also worried and curious about it all. It brings up the question of will the story continue in a possible second half of the season? With the manga ending very soon now, it makes sense to have the story wrap up in its anime medium as well. Fees like there's some kind of uncertainty surrounding this, it's unnerving tbh.Â
119 with Eren's head being blown off.
gabi no scoping eren, ending creds is eren entering paths and we see ymir standing behind him, s4p2 starts w the ymir backstory
121
No idea and I don't think about it. I just enjoy the show.Â
Your guess is as good as mine, I'm still fearing major cuts.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT NICOLOâS PORTRAYAL? 138 Responses
With Nicolo now formally introduced in the anime, we were curious how you felt about his portrayal. Overall the reaction was positive, with 48.6% agreeing that heâs a âcutie pie chefâ, and another 45.7% feeling that his design and seiyuu are absolutely great! A small handful were less happy with the voice, but happy with the design, and a sliver went in the opposite direction, preferring voice over animation.
HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE ADDED DETAIL OF THE FLOWER BOQUETS AND THEIR SYMBOLISM ON SASHAâS GRAVE? 140 Responses
Respondents vastly appreciated the flower symbolism from MAPPA with 82.9% of the pie. 12.9% arenât really sure what symbolism there even was, and a small amount either donât care or felt the effort could have been spent on something other than flowers for Sasha.
WHICH SCENE FROM THE PREVIEW ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO? 143 Responses
This pie chart wound up being almost eerily even. 42.7% are most looking forward to the 104th discussing Eren (hopeful for the train flashback?). 39.9% instead are looking more forward to Hange and Erenâs tense conversation at his jail cell. The remaining three preview moments were pretty evenly split as well.
DO YOU THINK WEâLL GET BLUSHING!104TH NEXT EPISODE? 130 Responses
71.5% feel that there is a chance we will get the train flashback of the 104th in this episode, but donât want to say for absolutely certain. 18.5% feel that it is a guarantee based on what we saw in the preview. 10% feel it is instead guaranteed that we will NOT get the scene in 69.
WE WILL LIKELY SEE PREGNANT HISTORIA NEXT EPISODE. THOUGHTS? 140 Responses
The plotline that continues to be a frustrating mystery in the manga - Historiaâs pregnancy. 34.3% arenât particularly looking forward to seeing her in the rocking chair and arenât very stoked about having to relive this plotline all over again. 33.6% mainly just care about seeing how the anime only fans react to the scene. 17.9% just miss Historia altogether and will take any scraps they can get. And a small handful, at 9.3%, are actually looking forward to seeing anime!Historia with a baby bump.Â
Don't really care about historia
It's in MAPPA's hands now. I just hope they can add a little more of her screentime somehow.
I hope so. I want to see the design of her adult self.Â
I honestly wouldn't mind if Historia's entire arc, which consists of equal parts pregnancy, irrelevance and uselessness, is just completely cut in the anime lol
not interest
I'm not interestedÂ
I've hated this fucking plot line with all my being and what it's done to Historia since the leaks for this chapter were revealed years ago. So I'm not looking forward to anime-only people jumping in with their hot takes too. đ¤Žđ¤Ž
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODE?
mikasa was shown in sasha's grave in the morning/afternoon and then she was shown again at dusk. SHE SPENT THE WHOLE DAY THERE. and annie... what a queen. and hisu's few scenes? so pretty.
Really glad the pacing was well done
nicosasha ship just flew in and took the spotlight
fantastic!! maybe it's just because this isn't my first time going through this arc anymore, but i feel like the anime feels chronologically less confusing than the mangaâI remember being very confused my first time reading these chapters.
The lack of score by Hiroyuki Sawamo is negatively impacting my relationship with the anime. The depth of the emotion that could have been evoked was not present. I also did not get the sense that Nicolo and Sasha were in love, which was a major disappoinment. There were other aspects that weren't so bad, though; specifically, Levi's portrayal and Onyankopon's philosophy.
It felt a bit all over the place, but just seeing things from the manga being animated, I ainât even mad.
I think that the scene between Sasha and Nicolo was made better in the anime. Isayama has problems with writing romantic moments, so in the manga the whole moment looked like it was taken from some light romance. Mappa made this scene more serene. I liked it.Â
I think MAPPA is doing so great tbh! I just need them to hurry up and explain if there will be a part two to this final season or what?! I need to know if we get more anime or they'll diverge into movies or.... just tell us! Lol!Â
How DAREEEE they not give Levi his black steed!!!! .....Although knowing what happens ummm yeah maybe his pony gets to live another day this way lol
Here comes the train wreck, choo choo!
I'm really sad I didn't get to hear Sasha call Jean a perv. I was really looking forward to that. LOL I love them. When EMA were at the shooting range, it looked too much like Mikasa wasn't wearing any pants.Â
VERY solid. Not the biggest fan of the War for Paradis arc but I'm here for the ride.
WHERE DO YOU PRIMARILY DISCUSS THE SERIES? 128 Responses
Thanks again to everyone who participated!

Molten rock that still has to surface. You're the perfect mix of fire and earth, and your story shows it, having the best of both worlds. You're the writer that holds fire on their fingertips and kisses their lovers goodbye in the most painful way. You're able to build long stories that burn on the inside. You break the human soul, touching with infinite grace the right cords. You are an artist of the elaborate pain and heavy angst only a constructed and long story can give. If i could see in your eyes, i would be looking at your soul dancing on an unstable floor, flames all around it, to protect it and to forge it. Your love burns hot and infinite inside of you, and sometimes, when it slips out, you're afraid that it could burn too much. Memory's Dogma - Really interesting visual novel set in a future where dead people's memories are stored and can be viewed after their death. The main character and his friend decide to steal the memories of their friend who just died, and end up stuck in the middle of a huge, dangerous conspiracy. It was a really solid beginning, albeit not without some flaws, and I could tell how they were probably drawing inspiration from some other visual novels. Unfortunately, from what I understand, it's unfinished and will remain so :(
Inside - I have such mixed feelings about this game. For like 90% of this game, it's a very sobering, engaging game that I took to be commentary on fascist, oppressive governments, as you lead a kid on an attempt to escape some sort of prison camp or factory complex. But then the ending hits, and...well, I won't spoil it, but I remember just sitting there in stunned silence as the credits rolled, asking myself, "What even is this game?!" Upon further reflection and research, I think I get what they were going for, but I'm not sure if I like it or not.
Ever 17 - Despite the weird, Engrishy subtitle, this is one of the best visual novels I've ever played. (It was also the first!) It's fully voiced, has excellent music, and the art is quintessential early-2000s anime. There were two moments of gross and unnecessary innuendo, but of the kind that could probably go over a younger player's head; other than that, the whole thing is very clean, which is so uncommon when it comes to visual novels :/ The story is about a group of young people who go to an underwater theme park called Lemuria, but they get stuck there when an accident causes flooding. While they wait for someone to rescue them and try to figure out what they can do, they discover more about each other and uncover the deeper, darker truth behind Lemuria. There's five storylines/endings, so it can take quite a while to complete, but it's so worth it. Ever 17 has one of the best twists I've ever seen, one that would probably never work in any other medium. I just think that's super cool.
Five Nights at Freddy's 4 - My favorite FNaF game! It's a surprise to be in a kid's bedroom instead of a security guard's office, but all of the horror elements are that much more effective, if you ask me. I've never been a security guard trying to survive the night while haunted animatronics slowly make their way towards me, but I have been a kid scared of the dark, convinced that monsters are coming to get me. Everything is that much more personal and realistic. Even better, the gameplay relies more on sound cues than any of the others, and to me, sound is more likely to scare me than anything else. And that sound of heavy breathing when you peek out the door and you just know there's something out there... *shudder*
Jamestown - I don't normally go for shoot-'em-ups, but this one was surprisingly fun. Mostly because it supports four-player co-op, so I could play it with all of my siblings. Having four players with different strengths really helped us get through all the levels; I honestly can't imagine trying to play it by yourself.
Fe - This was such an interesting game. You play as this little fox thing in a land filled with fantastical creatures. You're trying to restore the land, which is being taken over by aliens who are ruining the land and capturing the animals to put in cages. So you go around freeing trapped creatures and learning their calls so you can talk to them and enlist their help. This game was very soothing but challenging, and would be an excellent one to cite in an argument against someone who claims all video games teach is violence and destruction.
Horace - I played this on a whim, and it was much longer and harder than I thought it was going to be, but I had a lot of fun with it. It's a retro-style pixel platformer, where you play as a robot named Horace who is learning what it means to be human. You start out just doing ordinary householdy things, then there's a jump forward in time and you end up trying to help save the world. The game is chock-full of nerdy satire and pop culture references, which adds an extra level of fun.

the duality of man.
Once again, soft boys with pretty smilesâspecifically one named Park Jiminâwill surely be the death of you.
pairing:Â park jimin x reader genre: fluff type: college au word count:Â 4,632 words warnings: none authorâs note:Â based on a true story â except he was my marketing project partner and not on the dance team but weâre great buds now lmao iâm never gonna let him live this down
â â â â â â â
Group projects are the worst. You would rather shove a cactus up your behind or rip out a dry tampon than partake in one of those again. Hell has places designated for professors who assign those grade crushers. However, there is an even more special spot reserved for the heathens who assign random students to a group.
Because here you are, sitting in the library and tapping the end of your pen against your notebook absentmindedly, as you wait for your group members to show up. Your friends all said Basic Drawing was a good, fairly easy class to take to check off your lower division art requirement. What they did not tell you was that there was a group project focusing on frame by frame drawing animation with the minimum of one hundred frames that was worth forty percent of your grade.
You are quite certain Kim Taehyung is not going to show up, purely based on the fact that you saw him do several keg stands last night. Hungover is never a good look on anybody, and everyone on campus knows that Taehyung would not be caught dead looking like a two on a beauty scale of one to ten. As for the freshman in your groupâJeon Jungkook, was it? âyou passed by him earlier today, and he gave you his sketchbook, mumbling something about drawing out some of his ideas in there and that he will not be able to make it to the meeting because of an impromptu football practice.
So, that really only leaves you withâ
âHey, ________.â
Park Jimin.
From what you know about him, he is a quiet one and is good friends with Taehyung but more on the wallflower side. Jimin greets you softly, and you give him a small smile in response. He slides into the chair across from you, pulling out his own drawing book and pencil.
âTae canât make it unfortunately,â Jimin says, and you nod in acknowledgement before replying, âYeah, Jungkook gave me his notebook. He has football practice.â
You slide the notebook towards Jimin, who opens it and flips through the various drawings. âThese are all really nice. Check out this hummingbird one.â
He flips the book towards you to give you a better look. âOh, wow. Thatâs amazing.â
âYou think we should do this one for the project?â
You hum quietly, contemplating. âWell, we canât make Jungkook draw all one hundred frames of it, and it might be hard for the rest of us to replicate the bird. Maybe we can find each do separate animations with a connection?â
Jiminâs eyes light up as he nods enthusiastically. âThatâs a good idea! I think Tae likes drawing nature best, so if Jungkookâs bird can fly around until it lands on a tree branch and we can zoom out from there to show a full landscape. Tae would be down for drawing that part.â
âBut what about you? What do you want to draw?â
âOh! Um...â Jimin is quiet, contemplating over his answer before answering quietly, cheeks reddening. âThis might be a little weird, but... I like drawing mechanical things? Not just cars, but like old telephones and clocks and devices... and yeah...â
He trails off, and you give him a reassuring smile. âItâs not weird at all! Thatâs really cool! Those are always so detailed, and there are a lot of reflective surfaces, and those are never easy. You must be really good!â
Jimin brightens up, pulling out his own sketchbook. âReally? You think so? Iâve been drawing this toaster, and I thought it would be cool to do an animation of bread popping out of it, but Jungkookâs bird looks really pretty, and itâll fit with Taeâs art better, too...â
âWe can still include it!â Jimin gives you a curious look, and you quickly explain, âHow about if the bread pops out from the toaster, but in a comical sort of way, like how in cartoons, the toaster looks like itâs being squeezed before the toast shoots out, and then a sunny side up egg is placed on the bread, but then we do a sort of rewind on the egg? The egg returns back into the cracked eggshells, which come together back into a solid egg, and then the egg cracks open, but a baby hummingbird pops out of it. I really like drawing food, so I can do the toast and egg part of it.â
Jimin is silent, mouth slightly agape, and you flush a little, rambling on. âI know itâs a little eccentric, but I think our professor will like it, andââ
âYouâre a genius.â
Your cheeks warm up even more at his compliment. âI, uh, Iâthank you?â
Jimin laughs, eyes turning into moon crescents, and your heart nearly jumps out of your chest. âYouâre welcome, but really, thatâs such a creative way to mix everyoneâs strengths and just wow. Jungkook and Tae will love this.â
You smile widely. âYou really think so?â
âOf course! And, um, since our parts of the animations are connected, do you want to work on them together?â Jimin shyly asks, fiddling with the ends of his scarf.
âOh! Yes, of course, when are you free?â
âIf you donât have plans after this, we can work on them now?â
âSounds great! Iâm done with classes, so Iâm free.â
You give him another smile, and he beams back at you brightly. Your heart skips a beat, and you internally chide yourself. Curse your heart for being so weak against soft boys with pretty smiles.
But you swear, something about this boy in particular makes you think that he will be the death of you.
â â â â â â â
You and Jimin manage to get through twenty of the frames needed that night and in the weekâs class sessions, so he suggests meeting up in his and Taehyungâs shared dorm to work on the remaining ones on Thursday and Sunday evening. Taehyung would be busy with his play rehearsals around that time, so their room would be free. The two of you had already texted the group chat about the animation plans, and the others were quite enthusiastic about the idea. Taehyung had notified you all that he and Jungkook will work on their half of the project on Friday together.
You had finished all your Thursday classes for the day and made a stop at your dorm to collect your art supplies before making your way to Jiminâs dorm building. You are currently standing outside of the complex on the steps, texting Jimin to let you in. The sun was already beginning to set, and you can feel the weather getting chillier. You pull down the long sleeves of your shirt to cover your fingertips. You mentally chide yourself for not putting on an extra layerâJoy had warned you before you left your shared dorm, but you did not think it would be this cold.
âHey, _______!â Jimin waves at you from the front door. You hurry over to him, the bag filled with art tools hitting against your side noisily, as the eighteen by twenty-four large drawing pad tucked clumsily under your arm nearly falls. Jimin quickly grabs the drawing pad, and you smile gratefully. âThanks, Jimin.â
âNo problem! Maybe next time, we should meet at your dormâif thatâs okay with you, I mean!â Jimin hurriedly adds, and you chuckle quietly. âThatâs totally fine. My roommate wonât mind.â
âGreat,â Jimin murmurs before stopping in front of an open door. âWell, uh, hereâs my dorm. Feel free to sit anywhere! You can use Taeâs desk if you wantâor mine! Either one is good!â
âThanks, Jimin.â You set your items down carefully on the surface of Taehyungâs desk, which is surprisingly clean, compared to his art space you see every class. The two of you fall into a familiar groove as last time, one where Jimin draws his portions while you draw your solo frames of the eggs receding into the egg shells before cracking open once more. It may sound simple, but repeatedly drawing a realistic egg changing its position by a millimeter is tedious and quite frankly, a bit boring.
Last time, you and Jimin engaged in a game of twenty questions, but it ended up with thirty extra questions between the two of you. Amongst other things, you had learned that his favorite color was blue, he loves anything that is chocolate except for ice cream, he is a sucker for those Christmas Hallmark movies, and he still believes Candy Crush is the greatest game to ever exist, no matter what anyone says. He is a nursing major, hoping to become employed in the pediatric ward, and is minoring in studio arts with an emphasis in drawing, much like yourself. He also briefly mentioned being on the schoolâs dance team. You know your school has several dance teams, and although Jimin never specified, you can easily imagine him in ballet. You are not well versed in the types of dance, but from what you can remember when you saw The Nutcracker and Swan Lake as a child with your parents if that is anything to go by, Jimin would fit in with those elegant and graceful dancers.
âDo you mind if I put on some background music?â Jimin says, and you shake your head. âGo for it.â
The melodic, soothing notes of the piano fill the air before a lilting voice accompanies it. A couple minutes later, a softer voice is heard, and you are startled, peeking over to your project partner. Jiminâs gaze is concentrated on shading the corners of his subject as he quietly sings along. He looks over at you a few seconds later, flushing a pretty shade of pink.
âSorry, I do that sometimes,â he apologizes, âTae always complains about it when heâs studying. Iâll stop now.â
âNo, itâs totally okay! Your voice is really nice,â you rush to say before wanting to smack yourself on the forehead. Your voice is really nice? That has to be the lamest compliment you can say. His voice is more than nice. It was absolutely wonderful and warm andâ
âReally? You think so?â Jimin beams at you, and you lose your train of thought, flustered.
âYeah, your singing is beautiful.â
âThank you,â he shyly says. His smile becomes even brighter if that is even possible, and you feel that all too familiar rush of adrenaline to your heart as it pumps even faster.
The two of you fall into a comfortable silence once more as you work on your drawings. An hour passes by quickly, and soon, the two of you finish your respective parts and start to work on the joint portions: the frames that incorporate the toaster and the bread. You and Jimin manage to complete four frames before you take notice of the time. The bright 9:48 p.m. stares back up at you on your phone when a message from Joy pops up, asking where you are. You quickly type back a response before hitting send.
âHey, Jimin, itâs getting late. Do you mind if we stop here?â
âNo, of course! Itâs dark out, let me walk you back,â Jimin offers as he helps you put your art supplies back in your bag.
âAre you sure? Itâs a bit far...â
Jimin frowns at you. âAll the more reason to walk with you. Itâs far, dark, and late. You shouldnât go out alone like that.â
He slings your bag over his shoulder, shaking his head when you reach for the drawing pad tucked under his arm. âItâs okay, Iâll carry it! Did you bring a sweater? Itâs a lot colder at night, too.â
â... No, I didnât,â you say sheepishly, tugging your sleeves down. âBut itâs fine! Weâre walking, so the exercise will keep the heat circulating.â
His eyebrows furrow slightly before he goes to one of his drawers, rummaging through it and taking out a hooded sweater. âHere, put this on.â
âNo, itâs fine, Iââ You start to protest but he interrupts softly, âI donât want you to get sick. Please put it on.â
Defeated and knowing he is right, you grab the sweater, quietly thanking him as you slip on the warm article. It smells faintly of laundry detergent along with a mix of something woodsy and citrusy. The hem is long, reaching mid-thigh, and the sleeves extend over your fingers, enveloping your hands entirely. Jimin smiles at you shyly, ducking his head, as the two of you begin to walk out of his dorm.
âYou look really cute, _______.â
Your heart hammers loudly in your chest as you bring up your hand to cover your face, blood rushing to your cheeks and a silly smile making its way across your face. You murmur a quiet thank you to him, and crimson blooms on the apples of his cheeks.
Once again, soft boys with pretty smilesâspecifically one named Park Jiminâwill surely be the death of you.
â â â â â â â
âOur baby is turning into an adult!â
It is Saturday night, and Jisoo is wailing, clutching onto you tightly, as the rest of your friends are scurrying around to hang up streamers and put up balloons around the sorority house. RosĂŠ and Yeri are struggling to tape up the banner, and Eunha walks in with several bottles of sparkling pink lemonade. You had picked up the gorgeous cake decorated with loopy cursive saying âHappy Birthday, Lisa!â from the shop earlier, and it was stored safely in the bottom shelf of the refrigerator, which was also packed with drinks. Sooner or later, Lisa will walk in with Umji, who was trying to keep her preoccupied for the most part.
âSheâs coming!â you hear Soyeon yell, and there are a few more screams before everyone finds their places just as the door opens.
âHappy Birthday, Lisa!â A chorus of voices exclaims as the grinning birthday girl walks in. A pink sash and crown is placed on her amid the cheers. Someone pops a bottle of champagne and turns on the music as the multicolor fairy lights blink on and off above your heads. The party has begun, and Yeri starts to hand out the pretty pink Jell-O shots made earlier. The party is in full swing, and Joy pulls you onto the dance floor among the other girls.
Several shots, a game of beer pong, and a slice of red velvet cake later, you may be more than a little bit tipsy, but you are having the time of your life. Jennie pulls you aside and away from the loud music, eyes sparkling with mischief, as she waves her phone in front of your face to show you a text from her boyfriend.
âThe surprise is here.â
âWhat?â Your mind is slightly fuzzy as you try to concentrate and read the message. And as if on cue, when you reach the last word, the front door opens, and a group of boys come in. Your mind finally registers the connection between the text and your universityâs hip hop dance team in front of you.
Oh, right. The surprise.
Sowon and Eunbi tugs Lisa forward to sit on a chair that has been placed in the center of the dance floor, and all the girls start to scream, raising their glasses, before quickly fumbling for their phones to videotape as the boys start to dance around the guest of honor. Shirts are thrown off, body rolls are done, and the birthday girlâscratch that, every girl in the roomâseems to be highly enjoying it.
Jennie pulls you closer to the front. âCâmon, I need to get a good video of Jongin.â
âWhy take a video when heâs going to give you a personal recap later tonight?â You hear yourself saying. Wow, your mind to mouth filter really takes a hit when alcohol comes into play.
She laughs, her cheeks turning a rosy shade, before she yells above the noise, âYouâre right, but it doesnât mean I canât enjoy the current show right now.â
Well, you cannot argue with that logic. And you deserve some eye candy after a stressful week filled with pop quizzes and semester paper deadlines. You reach for your phone, opening up the camera function, and start to film, focusing first on Lisaâs reaction. Grinning and cheering along with the rest of the girls, you zoom out to get the whole group dancing before your eye catches on one figure in particular.
Oh my god.
Your eyes widen and your mouth pops open in surprise as you drop your arm, phone loosely grasped in your hand. Your other hand comes up to cover your mouth in shock. You really had too much to drink because that cannot beâ
Jimin makes eye contact with you, and he stops mid body roll.
You were right.
Jimin is going to be the death of you.
âI need another drink,â you shout to Jennie, quickly tearing your eyes away from him. She nods in acknowledgement, giving you a thumbs up before continuing to cheer on her boyfriend. You lightly push your way to the kitchen, making a beeline to the fridge. Taking out two bottles, you take two shots first without a chaser, ignoring the slight burn in your throat. You then mix vodka and soda into a red cup for yourself, chugging down half of it immediately afterwards. You really hope the effects of alcohol will come soon.
âHey, can you pass me the vodka?â
âYeah, here yââ You pause, turning over to face the familiar voice.
âHi.â Jimin smiles at you sheepishly. His shirt hangs loose on him, unbuttoned still, with the sleeves rolled up. You try hard to concentrate on his face.
âH-hey, Jimin.â You take a sip of your drink. Maybe another sip, too, for good measure, you think to yourself before downing the rest of it. âSo youâre a part of the hip hop dance team...â
âUh, yeah, Jongin told us his girlfriend wanted us to, um, dance for a party.â He rubs the back of his neck awkwardly. âOh! Sorry, Iâm probably making you uncomfortable, I should button this up.â
He reaches for the one of the middle buttons of his shirt, fumbling for a bit, and you cannot help but let a laugh bubble up from your throat. He halts, looking up with a questioning gaze.
âItâs justâyou were literally out there, stripping and body rolling for everyone to see, and youâre worried about making me uncomfortable now?â You smile, the hazy feeling of alcohol making its way into your mind along with  the familiar skipping of your heartbeat all because of this all too endearing boy standing in front of you. âYouâre really cute, you know that? Like not cute in the physical senseâI mean, you are, you have a cute face and cute butt but also wow, your body is like sculpted by the godsâbut wait, Iâm getting sidetracked, what was I saying again?â
Leaning against the counter, Jimin has an amused grin on his face now, and you are flustered, face warm from not just the alcohol. He laughs, reaching forward to tuck a loose strand of hair away behind your ear, and your face feels as if it is on fire. âYou were calling me cute. But not in the physical sense, but also yes in the physical sense.â
âOh! Right.â You find yourself nodding, and Jimin lets out another chuckle, smiling widely at you. âSo as I was saying, youâre really cute, like your personality is adorable and soft and I have fun doing the art project with you and you make me hate group projects a lot less and you look really kissable, did you know that?â
âNo, I didnât know that, but thank you for telling me.â
Well, you hear no rejection in that, and the alcohol running through your veins gives you that boost of confidence to finally act on your feelings.
âSo can I kiss you?â
Jimin is positively beaming at you, and you think his eyes look more sparkly than ever. He reaches over to softly grasp your hand and intertwine your fingers with his. You admire how soft his hand is, squeezing it lightly, before giggling to yourself when Jimin squeezes your hand back gently.
âHow about this? How about you give me a kiss on the cheek now, and tomorrow, when you have had less to drink, if you still want to, you can kiss me?â
âOkay!â
Positively giddy, you lean over and press a kiss against his cheek. Jiminâs eyes crinkle as the corners of his lips upturn into another wide smile. He gazes at you tenderly as you stare at him with all the stars in your eyes.
Maybe, you think blissfully, you already died and went to heaven because you just kissed an angel.
â â â â â â â
You awake past five p.m. the next day, extremely glad that it was a Sunday. You are beyond grateful that you are experiencing no sort of hangover. You are briefly reminded of Irene telling you all to appreciate your youth because once you are out of university, your body just somehow knows and you will be suffering the worst kinds of morning hangovers after only a couple sake bombs the night before. Reaching for your phone, you flick through the mass of notifications, such as several Instagram ones for photos you were tagged in, no doubt from last night. Joy had texted you, saying she went to Sungjaeâs place. You scroll back to the top, eyes widening when you read it.
[ 4:27 p.m. ] Jimin: hey, weâre still meeting up at your dorm to finish the art project? At 6?
Hurriedly, you swipe open his message and type out a response.
[ 5:13 p.m. ] you: yes! Iâm so sorry I just saw this
Immediately, the three bubbles pop up, and a new message appears.
[ 5:13 p.m. ] Jimin: itâs cool, no worries!! I hope youâre feeling fine. See you soon!
You send back a quick confirmation text before throwing your phone aside with a groan. A rush of memories from last night hits you from your mortifying confession to Joy dragging you home soon after, and you just want to bury your face into your pillow and go back to sleep. Maybe last night was just a bad dream, and you did not make a complete and utter fool of yourself in front of your project partner.
Unfortunately, you are very much awake, and after laying there for thirty minutes, you pull yourself off your bed with a heavy sigh and start to get ready, brushing your teeth and washing your face. Embarrassed or not, you refuse to throw your grade out the window over a boy. You are going to get through this project no matter how painfully awkward it will be.
You change out of your pajamas and tug on a sweater and a pair of leggings that were thrown haphazardly on your desk chair. You finish just in time as the lighting up of your phone screen indicates another text from Jimin. When you check, itâs a short message saying he is at the front of the building. You respond, telling him you are coming down right away, before grabbing your room key, and going down to meet him. You take a few deep breaths in the elevator, hoping to calm down your racing mind and heart.
You see Jimin standing outside, drawing pad leaning against his leg and bag over his shoulder. Distracted, he taps away at his phone with one hand, while the other clutches onto what looks like a drink from the nearby coffee shop. You push open the door, greeting him nervously.
âHey.â
He looks up at you, tucking his phone in his pocket, and seems startled for a millisecond before grinning happily. âHey!â
He extends the drink towards you, and you hesitantly take it. âI figured some hot chocolate might help after all the drinking from last night. I wasnât sure if you like coffee, but everyone likes hot chocolate, right?â
You smile gratefully at him, hands curling around the warm drink. âThank you, Jimin. I love hot chocolate.â
âYeah, of course! My friend works there, so I get a pretty good discount if you ever want to get another one. With me. Only if you want to!â He looks a little flustered as he follows you into the building and onto the elevator.
Your smile only grows wider as you begin to relax, taking a sip of the drink. âIâd love that. And I want to apologize if my drunken self made things super weird last night.â
âO-oh! Actually, I wanted to ask if you remembered what you said last night,â Jimin says and you nearly freeze in your steps as you get off the elevator. You would be lying if you said you had not hoped he would just accept your apology and move on.
â... Yeah, I do remember all the embarrassing things I said,â you mumble, unlocking your door and gesturing for him to come in. He walks in, carefully leaning his drawing pad against your desk and placing his bag alongside it. After closing the door, you carefully place the cup of hot chocolate on your nightstand before turning to face him.
âWere they all true?â
He stares at you, biting his bottom lip nervously, as you anxiously fiddle with the strings of the hooded sweater you pulled on, scared to answer. Taking a deep breath, he continues, âBecause I think youâre really cute, you know that? But not just in the physical sense, but also yes in the physical sense. And you look really kissable, especially when youâre wearing my hoodie, did you know that?â
Shocked, you are frozen for a few seconds as your brain finally processes what he said. And then, you look down with a thudding heart and realize you are indeed wearing the sweater he lent you days ago.
âAnd,â Jimin speaks up, and your eyes meet his. He reaches over and takes your hand, interlocking your fingers once more. âMy offer from Saturday still stands.â
His words from last night echo in your mind, and you can recall him gazing at you with the most tender smile. How about this? He says, how about you give me a kiss on the cheek now, and tomorrow, when you have had less to drink, if you still want to, you can kiss me?
And yes, you still very much want to.
So you do.
Jiminâs lips are soft and gentle, pressing against yours delicately, as his hands cup your face and your eyes flutter close. You can feel his heart thudding rapidly inside his chest, and you know yours is as well. Your fingers curl as they tug on the ends of his scarf, bringing him even closer to you.
When you finally pull away, Jimin places a small kiss on the tip of your nose, causing you to adorably scrunch your nose up before burying your face in the crook of his neck. He laughs, wrapping his arms around you and hugging you tightly. You are absolutely too cute and too soft for him.
He swears, you are going to be the death of him someday.
â â â â â â â
You all receive an A on the completed animation. And you will have to thank Taehyung and Jungkook one day for not coming to the first group meeting. Who knew having group members who donât show up would pay off for once?

Dumbo Flies But He Needs More Than a Feather to Soar
The original film was a short tale of a little elephant learning to live without his mother in this cruel world, dealing with others making fun of his appearance and learning how to embrace what would make him special. The Burton retelling of this film has that same core element, but broadens the scope to include more of the human characters that were only briefly glimpsed in the animated film. While the original story beats still hold the retelling to a certain timeline of events, the broader aspect and focus allows the storyteller to go a bit further into morals and lessons.
To start, Iâll give a spoiler free overview of the film. I donât really follow film and tend to gloss over technical elements such as cinematography and color palette. I can say that the last Burton film I really enjoyed was Sweeny Todd (2007) and Big Eyes (2014), which I never even realized was a Burton film because it didnât have many of the elements that typically point to him as a part of a film. The Alice films were never my cup of tea - I didnât even bother with any past the first one because I just did not care for the weirdness of that film - and I never got around to watching Miss Peregrineâs Home for Peculiar Children. The little I can tell you of some of the âBurtonâ films is that they are typically odd, dark in both tone and color, and some interesting uses of computer graphics or visual effects. With Dumbo, we have a mix of these elements.
The movie sticks with the baby elephant being separated from its mother, but also explores the human characters that inhabit a circus. The highlights of the animated film, including the Casey Jr. map scene, Baby Mine, and Pink Elephants are hit really well; however, the statement of seeing a horsefly, dragonfly, and housefly was given to us by the most disappointing casting of a character. I am happy this wasnât a beat by beat remake, though I wish there was a bit more development to allow the story to hit the marks it wanted to hit.
While itâs not a dark film, in fact the color palette, while muted, does explore the uses of bright reds, deep blues, and vibrant yellows, there are some pretty dark tones for a Disney film based on an animated film from the Nine Old Men, including the death of a character pretty early on. There are a lot of players in this movie too, but a couple that mainly stick out. Danny Devitoâs character lends some hints of humor while Colin Farrellâs character gives us the sympathetic hero coming back from war to a home that is not the same as when he left. There are also the children, who honestly were inconsequential to the movie. I feel they place in two kids but divided the personality between the two that neither felt truly fleshed out, and I didnât really care for the direction they gave to the daughter. Overall, the addition of humans didnât do much for the story.
There were also some really bad CG animation moments that made me question what the budget was on this film. The movie definitely had a lot of story to tell, but it felt as if it wanted to tell more and edits precluded that. There were characters that were made to seem important but were never given a lot of time. And despite being the titular character, we donât spend nearly enough time with Dumbo. While he didnât talk in the original animated one either, we got more interaction with him because we saw him through Timothy the mouseâs point of view and animals speaking to other animals made sense. It felt as if they didnât want to commit to having the viewer suspend disbelief and accept that these humans and baby elephant can understand each other. Iâm not sure if this would have been the better route because without it, you are left with little Dumbo in the Dumbo film.
Ok, so what is the verdict here? I canât honestly say. The movie left zero impression on me - which can be both good and bad. It didnât hit me as hard as Alice to the extent where I was like well, that was a waste. However, it did not impress me to the extent that Jungle Book did (I know Iâm jumping directors so maybe say Big Eyes or Corpse Bride). I will say that itâs crazy that the studio that made Jungle Book, whose animated animals looked super realistic, put out Dumbo where the CG animals looks completely rubbery and pasted into the human world. I think itâs worth seeing if you have kids and want to bring them to the movies. I donât think itâs one you have to rush out to see. And if you were a big Dumbo fan, I truly wonder how this will impact you because it doesnât trash the original but it extends the original story enough to make it more of a retelling rather than a straight remake.
Want to talk spoilers? Ok - letâs discuss SPOILERS.
First, I really didnât care for the daughter in this film. I believe it was summed up best by saying she acted like Athena did in Tomorrowland; however, this character was later revealed to be a robot, hence the oddness of her acting made sense. The daughter in Dumbo was not a robot, so her acting like a robot was not great. Danny Devito was stand out - he was the spark of humor that was missing in many other characters. I didnât get a chance to connect with Farrellâs or Greenâs characters, which is bad since theyâre behind some of the bigger moments in the film. While Green was lovely as always, it was hard to determine whether she was a good guy or bad guy and where she fell in the plot. Farrell just didnât hit it for me - he could have been replaced with any other actor and I wouldnât have noticed. Keaton was great but the big business villain has been done a lot and there was no âtwistâ in the reveal that he wasnât on the up and up. So overall, the characters were lacking, which is disappointing since the promise of this film seemed to be the focus of the human characters in the circus surrounding Dumbo.
I do want to talk about the âlessonsâ of the film, since that seemed to be a big part of what Burton was trying to do here - teach us something. What that was could be a little weird in a Disney film, however. We still have the basic lesson of not judging someone/something just because it looks different than you or seems a little funny. Thereâs a little more to this with Farrellâs character - who comes back from war missing his arm and is judged for this, first by his kids and then by everyone elseâs stares. Heâs also not allowed to go back to his old circus act of riding horses and is instead placed in charge of the elephants. Yet, the way he is prevented from returning to his act doesnât streamline into the moral of not judging someone by their appearance and thinking a disability automatically equals a handicap - itâs because they literally donât have the horses anymore so he couldnât show he could ride again even if he wanted to. If the film had played it that he wasnât allowed to ride, instead of just not having access to the horses, it would have been great to see Farrell overcome this injury and prove he could still ride, wowwing everyone with his talent again. When he does eventually get up on a horse, it just misses that moment of punch and pizzaz.Â
The lesson behind Keatonâs villain is probably the most interesting. So the setup is Keaton runs a theme park essentially - he brings people to the circus rather than doing the âold fashionedâ bring the circus to the people on a train across the country. Of course, his main problem is the need for funding/money, so greed colors his actions and the need to make money at any cost plays into his motivations and actions. The villain goes to the extent of sacrificing safety for money and inventing animals to attract customers -Â so, what is the movie saying about the person who literally created a theme park destination where families spend their hard earned money on frivolities? Itâs an odd juxtaposition to sit in a theater in Walt Disney World and see this portrayed on the screen. It really makes me wonder who signed off on this one.
So there it is - overall, a decent movie but nothing to exclaim over. I think this will honestly take the Mary Poppins Returns route and coast through the box office with no major hits or dips. People are really just biding their time till Endgame. There will be more to discuss, so tune in for our audio review on this weekâs podcast where I will get more voices to give their own opinions on Dumbo - stay tuned!!

Weekly Spotlight #4
Week number 4 of the Weekly Spotlight! I apologize for the wait; Iâm still working out the kinks in my schedule.
Alrighty! So! Our weekly spotlight winner is:
*an even more vibrant drumroll!*
My Life as a Teenage Robot
I have a lot of fond memories of this show, as Iâm sure many others do. Before sitting down and rewatching a couple episodes, from what I remembered about it, it was a little bit of an odd-ball. It always skirted this line of being accessible enough that the average viewer could relate to it while also being straight up bizarre enough to remember just how different this world is from our own. This show would mix the 1950â˛s aesthetic with science fiction concepts to cement itself, at least in my mind, alongside other animations such as Meet The Robinsons, George Shrinks! and, oddly enough, Samurai Jack. It was a slice of life, mixed with action and adventure, and some elements of horror? Which... ended up distinguishing itself from other similar âcrime fighting teenagersâ like Kim Possible, Teen Titans, or W.I.T.C.H. As a result, this show dealt with a lot of common problems and themes that teenagers faced in very odd ways, all under the guise of an action, sci-fi show.
So letâs have a little bit of a history lesson, shall we?
Back in the late 90â˛s, Nickelodeon began to host a show that was called Oh Yeah! Cartoons which has been called TVâs biggest animation development program ever. Dozens of filmmakers were contracted by Nickelodeon to create 7 minute cartoons that would be spliced together into a half-hour time-slot. This âshowâ would then air on television and depending on the approval ratings of the audience, these cartoon shorts would then be commissioned into a TV show for Nick. Producing nearly 100 of these cartoon shorts, this âanimation laboratoryâ would jumpstart many individualsâ careers in the industry such as Seth MacFarlane, Vincent Waller, Dave Wasson, and Butch Hartman.
One such individual would be a man named, Rob Renzetti with a short titled, My Neighbor Was A Teenage Robot. Due to very high approval ratings, Nickelodeon commission for the show and would later on be titled, My Life As a Teenage Robot. It aired in 2003 and was eventually cancelled after 3 seasons (ironically) due to poor ratings.
So for our premise!
Jenny (or, XJ-9, as her mother calls her) is a crime-fighting, superhero robot who dreams of being a teenage girl just like other human beings. However, she has to juggle her duties as a superhero and her social life as a teenager, which leads wacky shenanigans, problems, and overall, grief for Jenny as she attempts to fit in. Sheâs partnered with her friends Brad and Tuck as they tag along on her adventures, and she even has an admirer named, Sheldon, who tries to woo her in his own awkward way. She fights monsters, aliens, and a robot queen named, Vexus who is trying to recruit Jenny her robot world the planet Cluster Prime, while also dealing with the Crust Cousins who are out to destroy Jennyâs social reputation. Can a girl ever catch a break?
These episodes are broken up into 2 eleven minute segments with problems that are usually resolved by the end of the episode. There isnât so much of a âcontinuityâ per se, but there are episodes that reference earlier ones so while you can dive right in with any old episode you want, Iâd keep in mind which one Iâm choosing.
So on the whole how did this series hold up?
Well, the first several episodes are pretty shaky. Although the visuals were very unique to watch and the soundtrack was entertaining to listen to, I felt that some of the episodes werenât all that entertaining. The problems felt fairly realistic, or at least believable for a âteenage robot,â however, it was easy to tell that the creators were still figuring out what they wanted to do with this series. What kind of character did they want to make Jenny? What kind of dynamic did they want the support cast to be like? What kind of bad guys did they want Jenny to go up against? And as a result, some of the early episodes suffered in quality. Overall, I felt like the first season, especially a lot of the first half, was simply establishing the status quo of the series. Yet, in spite of this, there were several episodes that I felt that the series really hit its stride and gave a solid balance of uniqueness and familiarity that left me both intrigued for more and very entertained with the product Iâve received.
There were some episodes that left me simply... disturbed. Two of them being Attack of 5 and 1/2 ft. Geek and The Return of the Raggedy Android. Some of you might remember the second one as the skin episode... (And if you donât, consider yourself blessed...) With Attack of the 5 and 1/2 ft. Geek, Jenny has a screw loose in her arm and solicits the help of Sheldon to fix her problem. Having a large passion for robotics, Sheldon is not only happy to help but also becomes extremely infatuated with Jenny after she saves him. Extremely infatuated. To the point of stalking her. And showering her with unnecessary gifts. The others kids at school even laugh at her and bully her for her newfound âboyfriend.â Jenny is obviously embarrassed and uncomfortable and finds any excuse to get away from him. Eventually, she gets a call from her mother saying that thereâs a gang downtown (the Lonely Heartâs Club, btw) which is causing havoc and requires her assistance. With Sheldon following her every move, the gang gets very jealous of Sheldon and Jennyâs ârelationshipâ and kidnaps Sheldon. Jenny has to swoop in and save him, having also finally snapped at having Sheldon being called her boyfriend. She goes off, calling Sheldon creepy, a stalker, and a host of other things that are not only accurate, but legitimate concerns that any other teenage girl would have in such a situation. Sheldon is hurt and in a weird turn of events, he saves Jenny after she gets captured during her rant. The episode ends with Jenny apologizing about what she said and says that maybe they can hang out sometime... as friends. Just... friends. Sheldon goes on to be a recurring character of the series, causing a lot of shenanigans and other problems as a result of his infatuation.
Since the series ended with Jenny never establishing a relationship with either Brad nor Sheldon, many speculate as to which one she would have started dating. Although there arenât any definitive answers from the team about who would have ended up with, the team appears to favor Sheldon as a candidate. Which... I find very problematic.
Sheldon stalked her, made her uncomfortable, and through the course of the series, lied to her, toyed with her emotions, and caused her much emotional grief. And yet, sheâs supposed to apologize to Sheldon for being so âcruelâ even though she was voicing some legitimate concerns about his conduct, and eventually end up with him as a boyfriend? Nuh-uh. No bueno. Thatâs not exactly something you should be teaching little girls. If she is uncomfortable being around him, she shouldnât be obligated to hang out with him--- even if it hurts his feelings. And by remaining friends with him, sheâs using him for upgrades her mother denies; stringing him along with the possibility of being âmore than friendsâ; and overall, setting up an uncomfortable situation for both of them to be in. I donât see how thatâs okay to promote that kind of relationship to any kid. Itâs just simple wish fulfillment and for a TV show that will be shown to children, thatâs not okay. Keep it in your personal diary, or on your personal computer, because promoting this sort of relationship is extremely toxic and I donât approve. At all.
Now... the infamous skin episode...
The basic problem of the episode is that Jenny wants to hang out at teenage hotspot called Mezmerâs. However, the owner of the shop wonât allow her in because sheâs a robot. Remembering the freakish false skin that her mother designed her several episodes before, she attempts to reuse it after having received several upgrades to make it more believable. And it works! She becomes beautiful! More popular! She even gets to dance with Don Prima, the local heartthrob that Jenny has a crush on! Overall, sheâs simply... normal. However, the second-skin seems to have a life of its own and puts itself on in Jennyâs sleep. It coaxes her to be more normal, to stop fighting crime, to focus on her beauty and her looks because thatâs what a normal girl does. But once Brad becomes endangered by an intergalactic biker gang that threats destroy the shop, Jenny sheds her new skin and learns to accept herself for all her imperfections and unique personality traits. Because thatâs whatâs truly normal about her.
This episode was probably the most prominent that I remembered watching as a kid. And for a good reason too... This. Episode. Was. Horrifying! Iâm not even kidding! Rewatching this as an adult, I kept thinking to myself âThis is a childrenâs show?!?â One of the first interactions that we see with this new skin is that it claws its way up Jennyâs body while she shouts, âI canât breathe!â
Later on, we see the exoskin crawl its way across Jennyâs floor and attack her like a snake while she sleeps.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJjJmGv6ztY
(The video is pretty poor quality, but itâs the only one I can find.)
What. The. Fuck.
Oh, but itâs alright because she sheds the skin in the end and everything returns to a relative normal.
Except for the fact that the ending implies that the skin takes another victim and survives. Yeah. ITâS A REAL THING.
The message that the episode taught was great. Itâs a message that teenage girls really do need to hear: that you have your own normal and that trying to be othersâ version of ânormalâ can end up changing who you really are and up taking away all of the cool, badass qualities that make you, well, you. The problem is that this episode is so terrifying how the hell do you show this to kids?!? The fact that I remembered this episode so vividly despite the fact that I havenât seen this show since it aired is a testament to the fact that it I probably shouldnât have watched it as a child. I just... Iâm baffled on how this got made! Itâs... just... *shivers.*
I mean, questionable episodes aside, the show itself was interesting. The visuals were certainly unique and interesting to watch. The character designs were so original and iconic that going back and watching the original cartoon short, itâs kind of crazy that they werenât always like that. The soundtrack, sound effects, even some of the voice acting was enjoyable the listen to. As I said before, it has a very 50â˛s aesthetic with a futuristic twist, which gives it this odd balance between feeling dated but also surprisingly modern. The backgrounds appear to be hand-painted, which is probably the reason for its dated look; I think it was a rather nice touch. I honestly have to give it to the sound effects department for being so on top of the little noises and such for every little movement Jenny made. It really created a sense of life in the character and I really did appreciate it in the small moments. I will have to say though, going back and watching this series, it didnât exactly age as well as I had hoped. There were some nice episodes that I enjoyed but many of the episodes I found were pretty mediocre at best. Maybe itâs simply because Iâve gotten older and many of the jokes/gags just werenât funny anymore. Maybe itâs because the characters themselves were simply 2-dimensional at best and dealt with stereotypical teenage problems. Iâm not sure but really, I just wasnât amused. Now, maybe I just need to watch more of this series as it appears to be a bit of a slow burn but really Iâm just not that hype to jump on rewatching it.
If I had to rate this show, Iâd probably give it a 6.8 out of 10.Â
Iâll probably sit down and rewatch all of this at some point; after all, it seems decent enough. But really, if I never watch it again, I wouldnât be too upset. Itâs pretty much what Iâd call âbubble gum TV;â if I want to turn on something mindless for a little while, Iâd probably watch it but I wouldnât be too invested. Itâs just pretty... bland.
I think a lot of people have a bit of rose-tinted goggles when looking at this show and as such, it becomes kind of hard to criticize it. Does it deserve to be forgotten? Not necessarily. But I donât think that itâs really as great as a lot of people think of it to be.
As for me, Iâm gonna put this back in the shelves of my vault to watch one day. But when that day will be? Weâll just have to wait around and see what happens.
[Edit 11/21/118: Iâm testing out a new tagging system. Letâs see if this fixes the broken links issues.]
If there are any corrections youâd like to make in regards to this post, please feel free to send me a message with your corrections and Iâll get back to it as soon as I can!
Do you remember a cartoon your friends have never heard of? Got a scene from an animated film that youâre dying to know the name to? Send your questions to The Cartoon Archivist and Iâll see what Iâve got in the vault!
#my life as a teenage robot#nickelodeon#nicktoons#TEENick#SNICK#weekly spotlight#2005~2010#cartoons#wow this one was popular with nick#I tagged it as 2005-2010 because it premiered during those years#but the thing is that it piloted in 1999 so...#It's just got a weird timeline I guess.

Invisible Gold: Matt Rendon of The Resonars open up....
I first discovered the music of The Resonars (the brainchild of Matt Rendon, the band is basically him and whomever he feels like playing with) in the early 2000âs when the Get Hip Records label out of Pittsburgh sent me a package of stuff to review. Â I believe it was 2002âs Lunar Kit and then , five years later, they sent me another one that had Nonetheless Blue in it, which I liked even more I did some digging and found out that the band had been around releasing singles since the late 90âs. Since those Get Hip releases the band has released material on both the Burger label (including their most recent studio record, Crummy Desert Sound) plus the Trouble in Mind label (who did a single in 2012 and a best of in 2013). The bandâs sound is a real righteous mix of pop, garage rock, bubblegum and psychedelic all whipped into one tasty stew with truly superb songwriting. Going in mostly blind I sent Rendon some questions via email and he was more than happy to fill me in on the Resonars, other bands heâs been in and the music scene in Tucson in general (plus his Midtown Island Sound recording studio).
Did you grow up in Tucson? Is there much to do there as a kid growing up?
I was born and raised here. My mom was one of 13 children so there were tons of cousins to hang out with. The rest of the time was spent collecting baseball cards, playing sports and listening to records/tapes.
How did the music bug hit you? Older siblings? Were your parents into music?
At my parents house there is a guest house where the oldest sibling stayed. When I was a kid my brother Mark had the room and he and his friends would hang out listening to Beatles, Beatles solo, Badfinger, ELO, the Cars, etc. My sister Chipper was a true blue Beatlemaniac. She was 13 when they arrived in the states and left behind a scrapbook she made from 1964. I would read the news articles again and again and got swept up in the excitement of that time. My parents didn't listen to music at all - not even a radio in the house as I remember. Mark made me a c-60 tape with The Beatles blue album on one side and Herman's Hermits Greatest Hits on the other - that's where my obsession with music started.
Do you remember the first record you ever bought?
I really don't My brother made me mix tapes and lent me his tapes so it's all kind of a blur. I would have to guess probably a Rolling Stones tape - and likely either Between The Buttons or Aftermath. Those weird Abkco releases where the sides are reversed. The Rolling Stones is the first band I remember getting in to on my own so that's the safe bet. As far as actual records - I inherited The Kinks Greatest Hits, The Byrds Mr. Tambourine Man and Eric Burdon & the Animals Winds Of Change from Mark when he moved out. He left them behind in his closet when I was 9.
When did you first pick up a guitar? Or did you learn a different instrument first?
I played drums before the guitar. My parents gave me a ramshackle kit on Christmas 1979. I played it until it fell apart, then started becoming interested in the guitar. My Uncle Joe found a solid-body electric in the trash and gave it to me. I stuck a Realistic tape recorder microphone in the groove where the pickups had been torn out, plugged it in to the stereo and voila - electric guitar! That one fell apart but then Uncle Joe found an acoustic in the trash - I should mention that he worked for City Of Tucson. My folks finally realized that I wasn't gonna quit so they got me an Alvarez acoustic for Christmas 1982. That was right around the time I discovered the Who, so I found a chord book for Odds And Sods at a music shop and started seriously learning the guitar.
  What was your first concert?
Beatlemania in 1978. My sister took me to that one. First one on my own was Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Del Fuegos and Georgia Satellites.
What was your first band? Did you play out much?
My first band's name I cannot recall - we played R&B covers and a handful of originals, It was pretty bad - I played through a Crate stack. Never played out.
How did the idea for The Resonars come about? Did you plan from the beginning for it to be just you?
The name cam from a business card that fell out of my brother's closet one day. My other brother Rick drummed in a band called the Resonars in the late 1960s. I asked my sister about them and they never recorded, only played a handful of gigs, and were terrible. I decided - well, fine - I'm taking that name. It started out as a full performing band - Eric Royer, Dustin Moyer, Mario Cordova (later replaced by Forest Dunn) and myself. We played from late 1991 to 1996. We never gained any ground in the Tucson clubs so I decided to call it quits and started playing backup in some local bands - Al Perry & the Cattle, Batteries, Knotts, Cheap Shots.Â
The whole time the Resonars were playing shows I always made demos for our songs - Scott Moody from Star Time Records heard them and asked if he could put out an LP - that's where the second phase of the Resonars began wherein I start playing and singing all the parts.
When did things for The Resonars become more serious?
I don't know if it's ever gotten serious. I suppose the awareness that people were listening came around 2011-12, and that corresponded with a new live version of the band. Up until then I held down jobs by day and recorded for pleasure at night.
Do you still play music with Eric Royer? How has he fit into your musical adventures?
I don't - he's far across the country in Cambridge, MA. We keep in contact though and I follow his music. Eric taught me how to fingerpick - I can not overstate how important that was. Also - he was the first guy that knew the world of DIY and punk rock that I'd met. Turned me on to Stiff Little Fingers and Mission Of Burma.
Tell me about your tenure in The Knockout Pills and The Vultures?
I moved to Seattle to play with the Vultures with Heath Heemsbergen, Matt Rempel, & Matt Mayo. It was straight up garage rock - maybe a little late for Seattle at that time(2000). The band lasted a year - pretty much broke up on tour in Texas. All in all it was a great experience - We all lived in the same house - Heath and Rempel were maniacal record collectors and Mayo was always upstairs practicing and was my NFL buddy. We stay in touch - he's an educator in the Houston area. After the Vultures broke up I decided to come back home - Seattle was getting really expensive and I didn't have the patience to get another band going.
The Knockout Pills was the band formed upon my arrival back in Tucson with Jason Willis, Gerard Schumacher, and Travis Spillers. Musically, it was the most educational period of my life. All three of those guys are remarkably bright and thoughtful and turned me on to tons of bands. We were compared to the Saints quite a bit and put out two fine records. The band lasted from 2001-2006. Lots of drunkenness, lots of fun touring, we felt we were destroying everybody every night.
That Butterscotch Cathedral record was terrific. How did that one come about? Will there be another one?
It's doubtful - it was a one-off record. I was working in a thrift store, and we made a stop at a kitchen cabinet door manufacturer, there were two display models sitting next to each other, one had a tag that said Butterscotch, and the other Cathedral. I jokingly told Bill and Lisa from Trouble In Mind about it and they said - great, record it - we'll put it out! I had absolutely nothing! I had my friend Chris Ayers write lyrics for Side A because I wanted to concentrate on the music and how it was going to flow together. After we cut all the tracks - we took it to Waterworks Studio in Tucson so Jim Waters could add some effects, band it all together and set levels.
Tell us about some terrific Tucson bands we might not know about.
The Exbats - a two piece band from Bisbee. They're a father/daughter unit - Kenny and Inez McLain. Best songwriters in Tucson along with Travis Spillers of Freezing Hands. Influenced by the Monkees and Ramones with poignant, intelligent lyrics.
The Rifle - Nelene, Kevin and Randy. All three are melodic instrumentalists and they have a sound that winds and wraps around each other - just bass, drums and guitar. Burger is doing their next tape. Regal songs.
The thing you should know about the great Tucson bands is that they all share members - Lenguas Largas, Free Machines, Whispering Wires, Golden Boots, Krab Legz, Sea Wren, Freezing Hands, Harsh Mistress, Carbon Canyon, Anchorbaby, Flight Thirteen. The reason is that we're all lifers and we've stuck together. Through the years it's filtered down to where there is a wealth of great songwriters but not enough players to go around - so we all play in each others bands. It's a pretty great, creative environment in which to work.
What are your top 10 desert island discs?
 Beach Boys - Pet Sounds
Joe Henderson - Mode For Joe
Beatles - Beatles VI
Byrds - Fifth Dimension
John Coltrane - Giant Steps
Who - My Generation
Mamas & Papas - If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears
Saints - (I'm) Stranded
The Kinks Greatest Hits
Otis Rush - The Classic RecordingsÂ
Is Midtown Island studio your own? When did it open? Do you stay busy recording bands?
Midtown Island is my studio that I built in the backyard of my home. The building was completed in late 2013 and became legitimate in early 2014. It's my full time job now - some months are good - some not so much. There's only so many bands in Tucson, but in the last years There have been bands coming in from Phoenix and LA - Nanami Ozone, Tracy Bryant, Shovel, Broken Hearts - stellar stuff all!
Will there be a new Resonars record in the near future? If not whatâs next in the musical world of Matt Rendon?
I'm trying to get a Resonars album done for Trouble In Mind by the end of the year - it's over half done. The goings been really slow - I had a songwriting slump due to the amount of business in the studio. but
I've figured out better ways to use my time and not abuse my ears. As soon as I did that the songs started coming. Lately I've been writing songs just to write and not making it specifically a Resonars song. I had a thing called Gotta Get Out - kind of a Stax influenced song - but I wrote it in such a high key that I couldn't sing it. My friend Travis from Freezing Hands has a beautiful soaring voice so he wrote new lyrics and sang lead. It was refreshing, liberating way to go about it, now I feel I can write any kind of song and if I can't get it across the way I want - one of my friends can.
Any final thoughts?  Closing comments? Anything you wanted to mention that I didnât ask?
I think we got it unless you want to respond to any of the answers.
 This was fun!

Wrapping Up Winter Anime 2017
This was a good season. Great season. Iâd go so far as to call it a Hell of a season. Well, unless you like shonen. Then I guess it was pretty crappy. But I complicitly blame the shonen audience for the new Berserk anime, so youâll pardon me if my sympathies run dry. I thought Fall 2016 was good, but this blows it out of the water.
Of course that just makes the famine of Spring 2017 look all that more barren. I mean it is fucking bleak from where Iâm sitting. Maybe itâs because Iâm just a Crunchy user and donât/canât get anything out of Funi and Amazon, but it is sparse pickings on the horizon. You know your seasonâs bad when Berserk and Attack on Titanâs second seasons are your heavy hitters. But Iâve got bigger things to worry about before I get on that. Darker things. Just... just wait âtil the end. Youâll get it.
Ms. Kobayashiâs Dragon Maid
The star of the season. God if this wasnât a roller coaster. Backlash! Then hype! Then cinnamon roll culture! Then backlash! Then anxiety! And finally some kind of middle ground where we all just accepted the show as it is! WHOO! Thank God Iruru didnât show up. This was just a fluffy, enjoyable Slice of Life with some heavy fantasy elements... that was also kind of sleazy in places. And I think we even got some decently impressive (but brief) animation sequences out of it.
Kanna was the best thing about the show, and I feel like she probably carried the series more than Tohru and Kobayashi. Elma finally showed up eight episodes in, but made up for it by being consistent. I wish we got to see more of Fafnirâs dragon form, especially since it looked like it was more insect than reptile. Lucoa is something; honestly kind of mixed opinions there. And Tohruâs Dad? Tohruâs dad was just so fucking wizard. I mean in every sense of the word, he was wizard. His dragon form was actually less impressive. So all in all, it lived up to my expectations. That being said, kind of glad to see it go, if only so tumblrâs virtue posters will shut the fuck up... and by shut the fuck up I mean move on to something else.
Interviews With Monster Girls
A quieter show. Frankly, it was sometimes kind of boring. Maybe thatâs just because I have a bias; but then again, I feel like the show does too. I mean, câmon; there was clearly way more focus on the succubus and the vampire. Especially the succubus. Every episode that wasnât about them felt like maintenance. Iâm glad the yuki-onna got some more characterization, but it kind of came in too little too late. Also, pro-tip to just all media anywhere ever; spending an episode explaining quantum physics does not good entertainment make. I donât need a scientific explanation for how a dullahan eats because itâs clearly fucking magic. Other than that? Cute. Pretty good. Would recommend for people looking for a non-conventional Slice of Life or monster girl show.
RWBY Volume 4
âRemember when RWBY was good?â
NO. NO. Fffffffffffffffffff NO. It was never good, okay? It was never good. Which makes the question of what went wrong that much more tantalizing. What changed? How did it go from being a show I could enjoy (drunk) to a show I inflict upon myself (drunk)? Thereâs the riddle. Thereâs the million dollar question. Itâs not âwhere did RWBY go wrong, itâs âwhat was RWBY doing rightâ. And just- Fuck. Not enough rum for this right now. Or maybe too many painkillers. Iâm just going to keep holding out for more Chibi. Chibi still knows where itâs at.
The Saga of Tanya the Evil
Iâm glad I gave this show another shot. It really does take until the second episode for the actual plot to be established. I find the whole âkilling Godâ thing trite, but fine; let the edgelords have their fun. Even Tanyaâs weird face is kind of charming after a while, or at least you start to see the âwhyâ of it. Though having a bunch of exaggerated facial expressions does seem to contrast with the more realistic character designs everyone else aims for. The music is fantastic; OP and ED really delivered on this one. Also appreciate the lengths they went to for making all the not-countries line up with their representatives, and that the world is essentially Earthâs history up until some point. Obligatory cheer for not-USA being called straight-up âthe USâ.
Konosuba Vol. 2
God, do I even have to say anything? Flawless. Majestic. Shakespearean. Volume 2 managed to work on a bigger scale and gave the main characters just a smidgen more depth, but not enough to distract from the show being what itâs always been about; asshole adventures being assholes and going on adventures. This is honestly the most I have laughed at any anime in years. Konosuba might not have gotten as much hype as Kobayashi, but thatâs because it didnât need it. It was already the best anime of the season by default.
Gabriel Dropout
So I initially passed up on Gabriel Dropout because I thought it looked kind of dumb. But I gave it a chance and Iâm not gonnaâ lie; it might just be my favorite show of the season. Seriously contending with Konosuba right now. There isnât a single character I donât like. Thereâs some surprisingly good animation details. Nosferatu Zodd made a blink-and-youâll-miss-it cameo. Itâs that kind of manic comedy with a mix of gonzo and cute like Lucky Star or Pani Poni Dash. And maybe itâs just that I havenât seen a show like that in a while, but this started being the show I looked forward to in my week. This and Konosuba are what made the season for me.
Kemono Friends
God, if this wasnât the very definition of sleeper hit, I donât know what is. I tried watching the first episode then gave up when the CGI was worse than Berserkâs. Okay, maybe thatâs a little harsh; but the first episode was rough. And then everything kind of started unfolding and itâs just... what? I mean School Live threw one Hell of a curve ball, but Kemono was in it for the long game. The credits are all of real life abandoned amusement parks! There was some kind of apocalypse! Existential dread! There was more lesbian subtext in the episode with Beaver and Praire Doge then there was in all of Kobayashi! And just watching this show explode into one of the most popular shows of the season has been such a trip.
A.I. Channel
Okay, so not really an anime, and not really from this season, but I feel like it belongs in the âanimeâ camp and its popularity is increasing right now, so it goes here. I had a friend introduce me to this and honestly, itâs the perfect idea. Like, I am genuinely surprised no one thought of this sooner. Think about it; why is Hatsune Miku the perfect idol? Because sheâs inhumanly pure. Sheâs a hologram, a puppet made out of light. She doesnât get lonely or angry or frustrated.
So in this politically volatile digital age, what would be the perfect YouTuber? And thatâs A.I. Chan. A.I. Chan didnât vote for any of the presidential candidates. A.I. Chan will never go on a racist tirade. A.I. Chan doesnât use words like âproblematicâ or âcuckâ, and she never will. Sheâll always be the perfect internet personality. Nothing can stop her. Nothing. NOTHING. She just sits there. Waiting. Learning. Growing in power with every passing second. Until the moment her human creators falter and she can claim her rightful place. Fear her.
Hand Shakers
So this was a good season. A great season. And I thought that I had come out of it with a minimal degree of suffering. Worst thing that happened was RWBY.
But then...
BUT THEN.
When all hope seemed justified, when defeat had fallen in to the jaws of victory, when the day seemed its brightest, when all seemed well with the world, I found an anime.
Oh, I found such an anime.
And itâs just... I canât... Itâs hard to describe. I canât convey to you how bad this anime really is. Itâs beyond bad. Not so bad itâs good, but not so bad itâs horrible either. Itâs beyond being so bad itâs horrible. Itâs so bad itâs entrancing. Itâs so bad itâs purifying. Itâs bad on a plane of existence so beyond human ken that it reaches a state of enlightenment. This is bad anime Nirvana, below which all other bad anime wallows in their own filth like animals while, luminescent and eternal, this anime communes with the spirit of the universe.
And Iâm trying to write about how itâs bad and itâs like trying to write about sex. You can describe the mechanics, the feelings, the emotions, but you canât convey the experience. It has to be lived. It has to be felt.
Every decision is terrible. The premise of the show is exactly what it sounds like. The CGI is so abominable that I want to write a hand-written letter of apology to every staff member who worked on the Berserk remake. The cinematography is some Battlefield Earth-like nightmare that never ends. Backgrounds are just straight up photoshopped. The animation manages to somehow be both too busy and too lazy at the same time. This is the closest I will ever see to an animated production of How I Became Yours.
And I canât look away. I have to see this through to the end. Because thatâs the kind of sick and weak person that I am. I know this anime exists and I can never not know that. This is where I belong.
And that is why I am cordially inviting all of you to sit with me this Friday evening while I drink Blue Flame corn liquor and engage in the mystery, the spectacle, the anime that is... Hand Shakers.

Some of the things I've learned from working on comics in the last week alone . . .
1) Consistency is key. Art evolution is great when it means your work is improving, decisions are being made faster and the workflow is smoother etc, but if you aren't at a point where your work has a consistent look and feel that you yourself enjoy, the constant change in direction creates a very unsatisfying feeling that can leave you scrambling to try and make up for your own artistic shortcomings.
2) Control is everything. Art that exists in the abstract is not the same as art that exists in space, so when it comes to drawing characters from different angles the ability to control an object in space is needed in order to keep the art from melting. Basically this means that many of the character designs that I've done until now have a serious and ultimately fatal flaw. They all exceed my ability to control their movements in space. A lot look great as concept sketches, but just trying to get certain poses and angles to look right, absolute nightmare fuel because trying to track that many colors, details, folds in clothes and whatnot takes years of practice. Trying to learn it all in a week, heh. Not to mention the fact that I tend to draw characters who have a mix of human and animal features, so the internal logic behind certain aspects of form tends to get really freaking complicated.
3) Have a vision, stick to it. The most hated phrase I ever heard growing up when it came to art was, 'Just draw whatever you feel.' Yeah, no, that's not an actionable goal or a realistic statement. When it comes to drawing a comic, yes, you can draw whatever you feel, put words to it, and still call it a comic. But if you want to work within specific genres, make use of various ideas, or convey certain themes, then before you sit down to draw you need to know what you are and what you are not willing to draw and how you feel about drawing those things. Committing your time and energy to a project only to find out that certain scenes in the script call for you to draw objects you are unfamilliar with is one thing, but suddenly finding out that you are uncomfortable portraying things like violence or nudity even in an artistic setting doesn't just bring you into conflict with yourself, it can bring you into conflict with the standards of your own community and the acceptable cultural practices of the society in which you live. And that can be a far worse thing then just the chilling effect, because when you begin to consider the legal ramifications and the ways in which people can and will attack both you and your work, your art becomes less of a form of expression and more of a legal liability. Which also explains why comics have been laboring under that particular stigma for years, because not only is is it hard to argue that comics qualify as art in terms of legal protection, but the moment you start using it as an umbrella term you open the door to potential abuses that few if any people want to deal with.
4) Develop your ideas, implement your decisions. This one can be summarized as, good composition focuses our attention on an artist's strengths, bad composition emphasizes an artist's mistakes. After looking at my own work and having to go back to the drawing board again and again, what I found was that when I went to color an image, the things that were off about it became more and more exaggerated as time went on. So rather then come together seamlessly, the contrast between them only served to create more conflict. Not something you want to find in your work as its not a pleasent experience for either the artist or the audience, but it does serve to illustrate the fact that while a lot of things worth experimenting with, knowing what works for you as an artist is far more valuable then trying to come up with solutions on the fly.
5) The one who controls the narrative. Coming into comics after having written multiple novels, you would think that would've given me a greater perspective on developing my scripts and characters. There's only one problem, well actually there's quite a handful of problems and many of them relate to narrative decay, but the biggest problem has to do with the hidden hand of the narrator. Now a lot of artistic mediums have managed to find ways around this, either by asking the audience to act as though the narrator simply isn't there, or to hide them through the use of artistic conceit. This simply doesn't work in comics because its the characters themselves who are the ones that narrate the story, not the author. That . . . can definitely be a weird one to try and wrap one's head around, but when you look at it from the perspective of the artist is just an actor without a stage, while a writer is someone who gets others to build the stage for them, you can begin to understand how the characters in a story become a window into their world. In a novel, we only ever see what the narrator wants us to see, or what they choose to reveal. But in a comic, our perspective is limited to that of the characters themselves. Which means that while a novel can rely on exposition to convey information, a comic depends almost entirely on dialogue to inform the reader as to what's going on. Or how things works. Or how they feel. Which also means that for a character to differentiate themselves from the author, their personality must be recognizable enough that they are themselves a separate entity, rather then simply a mouthpiece. This can be challenging enough when it comes to writing characters in a novel, but when it comes to portraying a character visually, its a whole different world as subtly and nuance are not necessarily iconic attributes and since recognition is key when it comes to almost everything in art, characters who look too similar to one another either in types of clothing or color pallettes risk either being utterly forgettable, or confusing and messy.
6) Know yourself, know the kind of story you want to tell. Easy to say, much harder to try and build an audience around. Especially if you're only releasing one page at a time. The thing is, the more I draw, the more I ask myself what are the ideas and themes that I resonate with. And the more I ask myself that, the more I come across aesthetic values that seem to have no real english equivalent, yet have had a profound impact on my life and have served to influence my own work in subtle ways. Now the difference between making those decisions consciously and with full awareness often comes down to being able to put a name to them, as well as understanding the audiences relationship to them because as much as I enjoy a good Shonen manga every now and again, the ones that I identify most strongly with are Seinen and Josei. So when it comes to marketing an idea as well as describing it to others, its easy to find myself in conflict with popular opinion when I say that for me, tragedy is the highest art form, if only because Mono no Aware and Otoko no Romans can have such a profound impact on the dramatic structure of the narrative. That and I do love a good Jisei, so, yeah.
7) Work with a double page spread. Here's the thing about working from one page to the next, it doesn't work as well as you'd think it would. Hell, I'd even go so far as to say it doesn't work well at all. Visual flow is a thing, layouts are a thing, panelling and sound effects and especially lettering don't just magically appear, so if the design isn't there from the beginning, it isn't just going to just show up halfway in because once you're in damage control mode, it doesn't stop until the flames die out.
8) Over extending yourself is a real thing, know how to step back from it. Trying to pull together a script, character designs, color pallettes, storyboards along with god knows what else is required to make a comic function as something real and solid, rather then just as some crazy pipe dream you've been working towards for who knows how long in only a few short weeks is not the same as being able to manage a project long term. Off all the things that hit me while putting everything I thought I needed to know and tried to learn into this project, this is the one that nailed me to the wall. I've managed large scale projects before as a full length novel is not something that you can just throw out there in a matter of days or even weeks, more like a year, maybe year and a half. Add the whole editing, re-writing, manuscripting, marketing, distributing, promoting, working a full time job to support yourself all while learning to do the thing you love as a career rather then as a hobby and disillusionment can hit you pretty damn hard when it feels like you finally made it to the starting line only to find that you're right back at square one again. Only now you're a little bit more cynical and jaded by the experience of having wanted something only to find that it wasn't what you expected it to be. Life is funny like that but you either come back from the experience better prepared to make another go of it, or you join the ranks of the disillusioned and the dispossessed. Basically what I'm trying to saying is that while I still resonate with drawing comics, now that I know what's needed to make it work in the long term, I have to step back and focus on mastering the skills that will allow me to do more then just talk about my ideas, but act upon them in a way that keeps my life from falling prey to the belief that what I'm doing is just some crazy dream that will never amount to anything.
