i kinda surprised at how few steddie fics i see that have actual coming out scenes for steve and/or eddie and the kids. like coming out in the 80s was like massively terrifying and ik we all like to assume the kids aren't going to be homophobic because we know theyre morally good and being accepting lines up with our modern perception or moral goodness but these are (at the canonical OLDEST) highschool freshman (13-14 mayyybe 15) (in! the! 80s!!! before the internet let you expand your knowledge about different people! in small town Indiana! where some characters have regan signs in their front yards!) even if the kids are all 100% supportive thats still TERRIFYING because our gays don't know how much of their parents' worldviews these kids retain.

where are our scenes where Steve sits down with Dustin alone somewhere and hes anxious and strangely quiet and gently he talks about how hes not dating robin because hes got this other person in mind and he loves robin always will but its not that kind of love and lately hes been feeling that kind of love with someone else, with said someone for a while in fact, but hes afraid, just a little or maybe a bit more than a little, of telling people about it. afraid of people he cares about knowing and not being okay with it or of hearing it and thinking of him differently or acting different or weird about it. (because lets not forget what people associate with being gay, what anyone just accepting rumors hears when you say it)

its terrifying, but its also dustin, and i feel like after robin dustin is the next person steve would trust with that because they're kinda everything to each other and coming out to your sibling is a big step and one if the first ones if you have a good relationship.

and not to bash on fics that don't go into this, honestly i love the diversity that comes with fics and how they don't have to be perfectly realistic to me for them to be enjoyable, but I'd definitely love more fics where coming out to the kids is more than just a group announcement followed by teasing or "its not weird cause your dudes its weird cause your like our dads"

maybe im just not seeing all these coming out fics (very high chances, i usually discover them through scrolling tumblr and clicking ao3 links for ones that sound good and I've only been into my st hyperfixation for a good few months which is tiny compared to the year this fandoms been going on) and if you feel like directing my attention to fics you liked or wrote that gave this id be ecstatic to read them <3
