The hair, the costumes, the music (oh god, the music - who stole my playlist?!), the cast - just everything is dialled up to 200% and if you dare to question ‘is it good though?’ it just shrugs and cuts to another sex montage.

Let’s be honest, I came (ahem) for David Tennant, but honestly, I stayed for so much more. He is brilliant of course, he always is, and his ability to capture the exact centre of a Venn diagram of pathetic and evil is unmatched - nobody does it like he does. He draws sympathy for a truly awful character, and certainly made me headbutt a wall a few times wondering how Tony kept making such terrible decisions. (Also if someone could supply a montage of him shouting fuck with full passion I’d be very grateful) - as he got more pathetic I honestly couldn’t resist him. His destruction of the Declan set is one of the most laughably pathetic things I’ve ever seen and I was almost crying watching it.

Meanwhile, they’re bending over backwards to make us like Rupert and I just can’t do it. He also makes lots of terrible decisions (mostly with his dick of course) and for me it undermines the apparent ‘he loves Taggie’ thing. I just wish he’d go home and play with his dogs.

Shout out to Victoria Smurfit who knocks it out of the park as Maud - she has some of the best line deliveries in the whole show, particularly as she prepares to leave for London and resume her career.

But honestly, my heart belongs to Freddy and Lizzie. If you’d told me I’d be grinning with happiness, with tears in my eyes, for a sex scene between Danny Dyer and Katherine Parkinson before I started watching this, I’d have called a doctor for you, but that’s the truth. They are spectacular and I adored them. Back to DT - the top tier irony of having his character win his first BAFTA and then have him clubbed over the head with it… priceless, and I personally suggest the academy honour him with a long overdue nod for this role simply in order to see him receive it with trepidation in case he gets bludgeoned with it. It even beat the joyous irony of Tony being all true blue and Tory after… well everything that went down this summer!

(Also, the way Tony passed the award to Cameron as they collected it made me think that if David had won this year for Crowley, he’d have absolutely asked Michael up on stage to give it to him because Aziraphale should share it)

 Agust D did not "jockey" for first place but was "unable to topple One Thing at a Time from its pedestal." Once again, Billboard culled the sales it counted and instead favored American artists' paid radio-play, but almost no news agency is willing to publish about this topic. Instead, Agust D has had the highest grossing tour of any Korean soloist in US history. It was intentional! And it was meant to say Ribbon. That's because Ribbon would eventually be happy if he stayed with Nightmare or was rescued.

The latter would take a lot more time, but Ribbon could eventually heal. One ending is that he can get help from Blue and learn to function on his own again and have actual friendship.

The former is obvious, Ribbon is trained to adore everything Nightmare does. It was be a lot faster to make him happy since, well, everything Nightmare does makes him happy.

It's alright lol. I just almost never listen to mainstream music and especially not pop and it was a teeny tiny bit confusing. (our brothers have very different music taste it seems, mine recently went to a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert).

Jimin is the ONLY one soloist who's pulling 3M+ streams now(#26 and daily increase for LC) and has 3 songs on top 200 spotify for 50+ days now While Jisoo's streams are going down daily and the only song is almost out of top 50 but still having 16M MLS ?

Yoongi's Haegeum left top 50 long ago but is still gaining MLS ? J

Music Monday #227: EXO - Cream Soda release: July 2023 genre: Kpop

I had something else entirely planned for today, especially since I usually like to let new videos sit for a day or three (and several viewings by me) before I even think of doing a feature. Plus I am already so far behind (this is the third of the three MVs EXO has released in relation to EXIST and my new music playlist on YT is still well north of 200 entries), but ... it's EXO. So buckle in and let's go.

One of the things you notice pretty fast is the way Cream Soda continues the tradition of EXO title tracks being Hard Mode for karaoke with all that falsetto. Those high notes are mad high - there's not too many outside of EXO who could hit all those notes that cleanly while dancing any choreo, let alone that active a choreo - so I suspect this isn't going to be going onto very many boy group's list of covers they want to do. Maybe on aspirational lists, but yeah. Dance covers will no doubt abound because they always do (not for nothing EXO is called Korea's national boy group), but vocal covers not so much.

As for the lyrics themselves ... oh boy. It's funny, I was listening to a podcast ep from the start of the year where it came up that a lot of pop music is love songs, whether that's happy in love or melancholy for lost over or something else, in part because of this perception that we all know what love is. Whatever our specific thoughts about it, we have thoughts about love and can relate to some extent, making those songs more broadly accessible than, say, a song about working on a fishing boat. Many (most? nearly all?) of EXO's biggest hits fall into this very broad category, so no surprise this one does, too. The lyrics are written in a way to provide plausible deniability for how sexual, but you can only sell that so far when you're talking about cream like this song does.

Given the two pre-release MVs included Kai, I'm curious what happened that this one doesn't, outside of his name on a place card. I suppose even with knowing when he was going to be enlisting, there was only so much they could cram into his schedule, between EXO and his solo music and then his fashion label commitments. And so we start the long two years of Kai's service and not seeing him while he works in the civil service.

But that aside, the video is quite the collection of call backs to earlier MVs - Lotto is probably the most obvious, but I'm also seeing callbacks to Monster, Ko Ko Bop, and Obsession. There might be more, but doing a rewatch of all of EXO's previous MVs to check would take too long, so for now we'll leave it at that and note that this could have interesting implications for EXO's lore ... if weren't stuck at a crossroads of wondering what is even going on with the SMCU lore-verse. For various reasons, I'd already paused trying to speculate on SCMU lore because it wasn't clear it was even still a thing and to be honest, this far along, I was almost half hoping we might be getting a reboot on EXO's lore, which has been a steaming mess since 2015 (I love the guys and the lore they've had has its compelling parts, but as a writer, I'm fully aware that it's a mess that could take a couple novels worth of storytelling to fill out and put straight again). Coupled with the two pre-release MVs, best guess is that EXO is still working with the same lore and like with Don't Fight the Feeling, there's some sense that Cream Soda is also pre-Obsession, but other than that? I've got some thoughts, some theories, but nothing really that settled. Compared to some other groups with ongoing lore, EXO leaves a lot more open to interpretation, for better and for worse. I'm going to need a few more viewings before I feel any degree of confidence in trying to kitbash things together into a coherent whole.

All in all, Cream Soda manages to both surprise and be completely what one might expect from EXO, a balance not every group can manage. This one's definitely going into the playlists going forward. And maybe even one of its very own?

EXIST is out now for sale at all the usual suspects, both digital and physical, and for streaming on all major services. I look forward to EXO adding music show performances (and wins) and can't wait to see who all they net for dance challenge exchanges. SHINee seems the low-hanging fruit, but other than that there are many, many, many possibilities and the dancer in me wants to see them all. XD

I don't think Tommy listens to music much, to him it's one of those things where you don't touch it for ages and then Very Briefly But Strongly Hyperfixate over. That being said they probably listen to The Scary Jokes and Hozier for comfort purposes when they're overwhelmed every now and then

Bubby... fucking loves Queen. You'll rarely, if ever, find it listening to anything else. you're ever wondering why ze's still up at 3am it's because ze was listening to Queen and dancing around his room with the air of a true performer. Fat-Bottomed Girls is a particular favorite of hers <3

Harold, like Tommy, probably doesn't really listen to music as much as the rest. He probably likes listening to old music in other languages than English because he likes the feel of different sounds and syllables. He also likes when the team sends him really low quality songs that sound like they went through a paper shredder

Gwendolen probably almost exclusively listens to piano music/piano covers of music on YouTube. Circus Contraption, Tom Lehrer and Tally Hall are the only artists she listens to normally without vigorously scouring the web for piano covers of their music (because they are just so good on their own). Her and Harold have a playlist of piano covers and old music with like 200 songs - Bubby got ahold of one of their phones at some point and changed the playlist name to "Nerd music" and they haven't changed it back

CITIZEN SOLDIER

Citizen soldier is a band that started when the lead singer, Jake Segura, attempted on his own life. He penned down the lyrics to his first song on a napkin in a psych ward.

He wrote this song, 'Let It Burn' as a passion project to help himself heal, but when he shared it it resonated with people, so he shared other songs he made, and the whole thing spiralled, he writes mental health songs, both validating and encouraging

I love this because he both goes into the darkest depths and isn't scared to show that darkness, but he also shows the possibilities of getting out

Now, 8 years after surviving, he's both a licensed therapist and going on world tours with his friends and with his music.

He's never cared to be on stage, but it helps so many people, he keeps going.

I love this band because it's a reminder that your darkest moments can be your brightest lights. I'm not gonna get too into it because no one wants to hear about my life, but this band was such a great ray of hope that survival wasn't just a mistake, but a possibility that everything could change. The moment he thought he wouldn't survive ended up being the moment that helped millions of people to.

I listen to music almost constantly and love lots of different bands, but citizen soldier will always be my top band. They do all genres of music and talk about different problems while keeping the same theme, from abuse to post partum depression, from piano to rock music, he tries to give everyone something

Fun facts:

I never go to concerts due to stimulation and anxiety, the only concerts I went to was citizen soldier. Due to the community despite it being exhausting, best nights of my life.

First concert I went to only had 200 people. Next concert I went to a few months later had 2000.

Citizen Soldier was just a local band that lived near me at first, never expected to become known as more than that.

Before Citizen Soldier even existed, Jake's mom taught me in middle school

I have autographs from all 5 members of the band

Stick Season was almost my top album of last year, but it was unfortunately or fortunately beaten out by OMR. It will probably be my top album of this year though.

You should absolutely go on a drive with Noah playing. Windows down, volume up. It’s one of the best feelings in the world. Totally euphoric.

Many of his songs have ended up on my Wilmon playlist, and I edit to him a lot, much to the dismay of my friends. One of them gave me shit about it tonight actually lol. The edit I mentioned earlier was this one (I'll add it to the end of this post too in case you have something against tik tok lmao, which, valid💀) and it’s easily one of my favorite edits I have ever made.

Unfortunately, I cannot afford to see him on tour, but I wish I could. I know every lyric to every song he has ever released I would have a blast.
