97.Ā Time TravelĀ  +Ā Marriage of ConvenienceĀ
okay so. terezi is a time traveler, but she canā€™t control her power, meaning that although she was born in 1999, sheā€™s never spent more than a year of her life in any one time period. every so often, sheā€™ll just blink out of existence, and a record of her existing in the distant past will appear out of nowhere. she never travels in space -- her time travel sends her to pretty much the same place where she left, just an unpredictable amount of time in the future or past. as aĀ  result, terezi chooses to live in big, old cities, because she wants to make the probability of landing in a place that has running water and electricity as high as possible. plus: no matter what, her powers always send her back toĀ ā€œhome baseā€ at the end of her trip -- basically, where she would be in time if she had never time traveled at all (so to calculate: itā€™s her birthday 1999 + how old she is, down to the month, day, and second. for this reason, sheā€™s worn a fancy stopwatch from 2083 since she was 12, so sheā€™ll always know how old she is.)
when sheā€™s like 24 or so, she puts out an ad for a roommate, since rent in big cities is expensive and itā€™s not like sheā€™s even there half the time anyway, so paying full rent by herself seems unfair. she gets an applicant pretty quickly, and arranges an interview with them. on the day of the interview, however, terezi gets flung into 2095.Ā
she finds herself sitting next to a very elderly woman, who claims to be minutes from death. throughout the ensuing conversation, the woman is weirdly unperturbed by terezi a) appearing out of thin air, and b) claiming to come from the past; in fact, the woman says in fact sheā€™s rehearsed this conversation dozens of times -- she points to a script sheā€™s holding, written in tereziā€™s handwriting. the woman introduces herself as vriska serket, and she claims to be tereziā€™s wife.
the time jump only lasts a short while. terezi comes back to her apartment, where the interviewee has been pounding on the door for what she says isĀ ā€œlike an hour!!!!!!!!ā€ (itā€™s been five minutes). terezi lets her in. she introduces herself as vriska serket, and she just moved to the city.
by now terezi has figure out whatā€™s happened, even though sheā€™s kind of freaked out, since sheā€™s never wanted to get married before and the vriska who interviewed to be her roommate seems like kind of a major asshole, so sheā€™s not sure how they end up together. but she hates loose ends, so she comes clean to vriska about her time traveling and tells her what happened in 2095. vriska laughs it off, like anyone would, until terezi disappears in the middle of their conversation. two hours later, terezi reappears, holding a newspaper from 1929, and after vriska gets over freaking the fuck out she moves in.
after like a week terezi suggests they get married soĀ ā€œthe timeline stays un-fucked,ā€ because she hates the idea of there being something lurking over her in her future, and vriska agrees because she figures if itā€™s inevitable they might as well get it over with and out of the way. so they get married in a city-hall kind of deal and continue living with each other in mutual acquaintanceship. terezi keeps popping in and out of existence; vriska gets used to her roommate vanishing in the dead of night and coming back three days later in pantaloons with a musket. eventually, they reach this odd kind of symbiosis, where vriska plans around tereziā€™s disappearances and takes care of stuff while sheā€™s gone;Ā  terezi starts bringing back gifts and mementos she thinks vriska would like.
after a couple months of this, terezi takes a jump that keeps her away for three weeks straight, and vriska slowly worries herself to death, because somewhere around week 2 it occurs to her that if terezi died in a different time period, vriska would have no way of knowing that. it drives her crazy. and sheā€™d die before she admitted to feeling an emotion but maybe now she can admit to herself that she likes her wife, and sheā€™d be pretty upset if she ended up dead.
terezi comes back from a three-week stint in 1984 to find their apartment absolutely covered in newspapers from the past two centuries, with the obituary sections cut out. then she and vriska have a long talk. (it ends with aĀ  lot of kissing.)
