Orlando Brown and The Toxic Exploitative Nature of Reality TV
Tumblr media
This year Orlando Brown joined the cast of "Bad Boys of Texas," a Zeus Network offering. Those familiar with Brown understand why his addition would raise anticipation. However, recently a televised altercation between Brown and his cast mate raised more than ratings. The behaviors exhibited are not only eye-brow raising but raise concerns. And the over-imposing disconcerting inquiry is at what point does permitting such behaviors for keeping an audience entertained cross over into exploitation? Orlando Brown Child Star   Image Source: Instagram Few do not know Orlando Brown. Orlando Brown has been a fixture in the industry for some time now. For many, their first encounter with Brown was as a co-star on Disney favorite "That's So Raven." Brown played the role of Eddie, one of Raven's close friends. And he was quite the caricature, his comic relief a welcome part of the series. However, as is the inevitable course of most series, "That's So Raven" concluded in 2007. After the Lights Shudder It was four years before Brown would see any significant work come his way. In 2011, he appeared in four episodes of a series entitled "The End". Following "The End," things were looking up. But in 2016, the script flipped, and Brown became infamous for erratic behavior and outbursts. Brown turned heads when he went public in 2016 with claims made about him and his former co-star Raven Symone. In the same year, he was jailed twice. Sportskeeda states, "In 2016, the actor was arrested twice on charges of domestic violence, obstruction of justice, drug possession with the intent to sell and possession of contraband in jail." This was only the beginning of Brown's erratic displays. Brown Crashes in the Public Eye In 2019, Brown sat down with Dr. Phil. Unfortunately, it wasn't a flattering look. All witnesses knew that Brown still had much he continued to deal with. https://youtu.be/YNHGrUjEWHI   Despite the unfortunate manner in which he presented, Brown continued to loom larger than life on social media. His off-brand behavior appears to be a boost. During this period, salacious statements were made regarding Sean Combs, Nick Cannon, and Bow Wow. https://youtube.com/shorts/fuA2S3lPZvQ?feature=share And each time, the virality of his actions increased his social media presence. However, such repetitive behaviors brought up one very poignant question. Where does one draw the line? At what point is giving someone a platform without a social responsibility to that person's welfare cross the line into exploitation? Spiral Continues Before Cameras Brown was again arrested in 2022. Nevertheless, he was offered a job on the Zeus Network's "Bad Boys of Texas" after his release. And as expected, Brown has become a series standout garnering colossal fandom. https://twitter.com/YeahImFamous/status/1663022809864445952?s=20 https://twitter.com/GoodLifeBreeze/status/1663021523521748994?s=20   However, it has been noted that Brown has been seen drinking and taking part in other activities threatening sobriety. Given former events, this is counterproductive and in no way aids in the star's progress or healing. When is It Enough According to Madame Noire, a recent series episode displayed an almost brawl between Brown and another cast member. Brown reportedly jumped at a fellow co-star when some words were exchanged. But the recipient of Brown's wrath did not respond in kind. As Madame Noire notes, "The influencer said he wouldn't fight Orlando because he knew he would "demolish" his turnt-up co-star with a nasty beat down." A Troubling Reckoning Reality tv has a solid fanbase. It does not matter what the subject, Housewives, Offspring of Hip-hop, or Bad Boys; there is a ready audience if there is drama, trash talk, fights, or any other over-the-top entertainment. Unfortunately, that's a cash cow for those who seek to cater to these crowds. Incidents like what was seen with Brown raise a lot of concern. As a community and culture, is there a social responsibility to others? How far is too far? Is capitalizing off another's pain or lack of wholeness a sign of an issue that has been too far ignored? But more importantly, is it past the point of correction? Written By: Renae Richardson Read the full article

Round 23
THE SEA EAGLE
MAKING RUGBY LEAGUE GREAT AGAIN!!!
Tumblr media
Round 22 Recap
Manly Sea Eagles      32                      Defeated    Wests Tigers              12
Tumblr media
After going down to the Warriors last week in Auckland Manly returned to the Fortress and back on firm ground easily accounted for the Tigers in this fixture.   Manly dominated the early skirmishes but despite plenty of chances failed to convert. Eventually Manly finally opened the scoring after 20 minutes when late replacement (for Curtis Sironen), Jack Gosiewski crossed following a deft Cherry Baby grubber. Gosiewski continues the trend of unheralded/rookie Manly players that have thrived in season 2019 under the tutelage of master coach Hasler.
Tumblr media
Against the run of play the Tigers hit back and despite Manly’s dominance, somehow with only 5 minutes remaining in the half the scores were levelled.   Two late tries to Gosiewski and the NOT GUILTY Dylan Walker resulted in a 18-6 lead to Manly at the break, a score-line that more accurately reflected Manlys dominance. In the Sea Eagle’s opinion this was Walkers finest performance since returning from the erroneous 9-week no fault stand-down imposed on him by the NRL at the commencement of the season.   Manly continued to dominate the Tigers in the second half and eventually ran out 32-12 winners. With the for and against boost from this game and other results going their way Manly now find themselves in the top 4, a far cry from this time last year when they were challenging for the spoon.
Round 23   Manly Sea Eagles              18                   Defeated    Canberra Raiders            14
Tumblr media
Watching the pre-game analysis on Fox Sports the Sea Eagle was bemused by a question posed by host Lara Pitt to the panel (of experts) to the effect of “How does Des (Hasler) get Manly up for the game today?” Seriously, and bearing in mind that a top 4 spot was on the line, do these people actually get paid to make such insipid comments.   Befitting a game with so much at stake, the opening 20 minutes was a tight and tense affair. Played in front of a large and biased home crowd the Raiders with a glut of possession and penalties applied plenty of pressure but Manly’s defence held strong.
Tumblr media
The Raiders then appeared to have opened the scoring when Jack Wighton crossed, only to be denied by a desperate Cherry Baby strip. Minutes later however, the Raiders did finally score when Jarrod Croker breached some tired Manly goal-line defence. Manly had chances of their own, first when Dylan Walker was denied due to an obstruction and then some desperate defence from the Raiders thwarted an opportunity to Rueben Garrick.   With both sides acknowledging their opponents’ defensive capabilities penalty conversions firstly taken by the Raiders and then Manly (twice) resulted in a 8-4 lead to the home side at the break.   Signs were not good when Manly returned for the second half minus Moses Suli (ankle) and Joel Thompson (wrist fracture) and things did not improve when Horhay Torfua failed to defuse a bomb in the opening set and an ensuing penalty gifted the Raiders another easy 2 points.   With their backs to the wall, a length of the field intercept to try scoring freak, Rueben Garrick enhanced by a penalty for a late hit after scoring and with 20 minutes to go somehow Manly found themselves in front.   Proving that they were indeed up for the contest and despite the pre-game reservations of Ms Pitt, Manly continued to lift. A try to Jake Trbjovic extended their lead to 18-10 and with 10 minutes to go it looked like Manly were home. Unfortunately, the Raiders immediately hit back and the game was still up for grabs.   The Raiders then applied the blow torch to Manly and threw everything they had at them hoping to replicate last weeks come from behind win against the Filthy Storm. The Manly defence in the final minutes was nothing short of outstanding as they managed to repel the Raiders onslaught and hold on for a stirring victory.
Tumblr media
Next week its back to Brookie to take on the Filthy wrestling cheating rorters in what again is a must win game for Manly in their quest for a top 4 finish.
   THE PUNISHMENT MATRIX
Tumblr media
Obviously aware that Mad Monday festivities are fast approaching, it has been reported in the Sunday Telegraph that the NRL has released what has been termed a Punishment Matrix to address off-field atrocities. Whilst it is likely that the introduction of said matrix could be a season too late, the Matrix has the potential to make the Director of Controversies role largely redundant.   Rugby league never fails to deliver with its stupidity. This one looks like the brain explosion of an ex-politician, but that is merely conjecture at this stage.   In response, the Sea Eagle in conjunction with the Director of Controversy has developed his own Punishment Matrix.   Offense: Being unable to name the team that plays out of the Shire. Punishment: Breaking on the wheel
Tumblr media
Offense: Being unable to differentiate between a Newcastle Knights and Barcelona FC guernsey. Punishment: Waterboarding   Offense: Being intoxicated and abusive towards police in a foreign country (e.g. Singapore). Punishment: Six strokes with a cane rattan on the bare buttocks   Offense: Erroneously standing down a player under the no-fault policy who is not guilty. Punishment: The Judas Cradle
Tumblr media
Offense: Non-specific administrative embarrassment Punishment: Public stoning at NRL fixture at half time   The Sea Eagle is not sure what relevance former whiz kid Todd Carney has to the matrix given that he has not participated in the NRL for more than 5 years and had no (known) involvement in any of last season’s end of year indiscretions, but  he is no doubt pleased that there is life after football for Todd as the public face of the matrix.   The Sea Eagle is pleased for Todd who is now also an ambassador for the eponymous corporate bookie Sportsbet. His latest bubbler ads are the work of marketing genius.
Tumblr media
The placement of the article at the bottom of the page is also worth noting and contains what can only be described as quote of the year by a concerned mum to the effect of “My two-year-old loves that bubbler, I cannot fathom letting her use it now”. One can only imagine her outrage should she witness the one and only Todd the Bubbler doing what he does best.   Let’s face it, Todd is the gift that keeps giving and the Sea Eagle implores Todd and/or his management to immediately seek trademark over his image, likeness and brand. “The Bubbler ™”.   Fairly soon the Sea Eagle expects to see a range of French Bidet products under the Carney Bubbler brand. As the man on the fata aka Sam Kekovic says, you know it makes sense.
NATHAN BROWN
Tumblr media
This week we were met with the shock horror revelations that Newcastle coach Nathan Brown had decided to “move on” on what appeared to be a mutually agreed exit, 3 weeks out from the semis and with the Knights still in the hunt for a top 8 spot.
In the News Limited press around 20 August 2019 we received this quote from the coach “Brown said the time is right to move on. “My main job was to come here and put the Club back together,” Brown said. “It’s been a tough but enjoyable job. I’ve met lots of great people and I feel the club is far better off for me coming here. “The roster and salary cap issues have been resolved and there’s the potential of a team to have sustained success. “A lot of the heavy lifting has been done and now I’m leaving it to the next group of club leaders to continue the job. “But it’s important to remember the year is not over and I look forward to finishing the season off strongly and push for a final birth.”   Suffice it to say as the Knights pressed on for a finals berth in round 23 the Knights capitulated and were smashed 46 -4 by the West Tigers. Worse still, Brown was reported as suggesting earlier in the week that the winning of grand finals at the Knights was for someone else (it certainly was not his role).
Tumblr media
Given his record as a player in the NRL Premiership stakes (i.e. Nil) and his background with the woefully deficient St George Dragons of the 1990s and early 00s one must commend coach Brown on at least adopting the well documented philosophies of Dirty Harry “A man has got to know his limitations”.   The press is also reporting that ex-Saints player Jason Ryles is also in contention for a spot as coach of Newcastle in 2020. Ryles suffers virtually all of the same problems as coach Brown has, namely being an ex St George player who has never won anything as an NRL player or NRL head coach. And, who has a severe case of DFI. Do we dare to dream the Knights go with DFI infected Jason Ryles ? The Sea Eagle sincerely hope so (together of course with a new and well documented assistant coach al la Trent Barrett).   Let’s face it, head coaching positions at an NRL club are no place for a non-premiership winning, DFI infected ex Dragons. Manly have acknowledged this and have reaped the benefits in 2019. The lights have also come on at the Knights too (provided they don’t go with Ryles) and they can look forward to 2020 with optimism. That only leaves the Dragons, and surely Coach MacGregors days are number at this hapless rabble.

Strategic Mothering
Characters: Mary, John, toddler!Dean, Samuel Campbell mentioned
Word Count: 900-ish
Warnings: Nothing major, slight description of panic and maybe a hint of angst
A/N: This popped in my head and wouldn’t leave me alone. This is just a little idea about how Mary would deal with trying to control her hunter’s instincts while living the civilian life. Maybe a little more headcanon than a fic, but I don’t know. All my love to @idreamofhazel for the quick beta. She’s so amazing.
Tumblr media
Control the situation.
Walking into any room, Mary instinctively scans for the tactical advantage. Doesn’t matter if it’s an empty room in an abandoned house, or a busy bar. There are tactical fundamentals for clearing a building, for keeping yourself and others safe. Mental preparedness is top of the list. It’s too easy to fall victim to the physical changes your body endures as you make snap fight-or-flight decisions.
Control your body. Keep the panic down; increased blood pressure and blood flow to major muscle groups decreases the flow to extremities, lessening dexterity and encumbering one’s self in up close, hand-to-hand combat. Keep your heartbeat steady, breathing even.
Channel the fear into anger or aggression.
Once inside, move without detection. Bring the bare minimum of weapons - allowing yourself to move easily, make less noise and blend in. Keep things tight. If your clothes are too loose, or weapons aren’t secured, you’re no good for the fight.
Don’t give anyone an opportunity to sneak up from behind, but stay off the walls, at least half an arm’s distance in case you need to swing. Clear the corners, communicate at all times and keep an eye on your partner. Use the lighting to your advantage, and be aware of entrance and exit points.
When approaching a threat, six feet of distance gives you the best time for reaction, if they’re already on the ground, four feet. Use the disorientation and fear of the target or threat to your advantage - use their panic as a measure for control.
Keep your head, eyes, and shoulders aligned with the threat.
Dominate the area. Be in control.
Monsters, demons, vampires - whether you’re on a hunt or on a trip to the grocery store, they don’t give a damn if you’re ready for them.
You’re a hunter, it’s your job to be ready.
You’re a hunter - a Campbell - and you’re a target.
Over and over, every place she went, Mary couldn’t help from acting on the instincts drilled into her day in and day out by her father. No matter how much she wanted to leave hunting behind and pretend it hadn’t taken root deep in her soul, it was always there, itching the inside of her skin.
Then Samuel was gone and she had John.
And she didn’t have to run the drills every day. Didn’t have to strap her weapons close to her body or constantly practice her self-defense moves. Didn’t have to remember the Latin or the proper way to kill a vampire or go running into the places regular people ran from.
But she did.
Instinct. She tried to fight it; swallow it down and forget, but she couldn’t. Her heart wouldn’t let her; her conscience wouldn’t let her. So, she adapted, but Mary quickly learned that motherly practicalities did not quite line up with the tactical ones.
Sitting at the restaurant, she’s nervously tapping at the chipping laminate tabletop. They decided to take Dean, their energetic three year-old, out for dinner. John had asked for the corner table which unfortunately sat on the far side of the bar, blocking the view of the kitchen and main entrances. Not that she’d see them anyway. He’d done the gentlemanly thing and pulled out her chair - the one facing away from the rest of the diner. There was no window next to the table, and the shadows and the dark wood interior seemed to swallow up the dim, yellow light from the round overhead fixtures.
Back: exposed. View: obstructed. Too much darkness, too much uncertainty. She had no control of the room and could feel her fingers going cold despite her racing heartbeat.
There shouldn’t be a monster here.
There shouldn’t be a threat.
But what if there was?
“Excuse me?” she calls to the waitress who answers with a lift of her eyebrows. “Sorry, I’m getting a little draft sitting over here, can we move to that table?” She asks, pointing to one closer to the middle of the restaurant.
The waitress flicks an irritated glance to Dean who’s bouncing in his seat and itching to run already, but Mary waits her out with a patient smile.
A busboy helps them move their plates and drinks. The commotion draws some attention, but it’s the least of her concerns at the moment. Mary grabs Dean and outpaces John to settle in her chair, the one facing the crowd, and tries to focus Dean’s attention to his french fries. He’s quick to figure out the new advantage he has and slips out of his seat, running toward the candy machines near the front door with a squeal and a throaty giggle.
John scoops him up, hauling him back to the table. This time, Mary backs her chair against the wall, blocking him in.
She feels the slight swell of her fingers as the blood returns, and doesn’t have the urge to tap her fingernails anymore. She scans the other patrons, keeping an eye out for anyone who might be keeping an eye on her, or Dean, or John. She doesn’t have a weapon on her that is molded to her grip, but she has a steak knife, and she’s pretty sure she caught a glimpse of a shotgun behind the bar, next to the cooler.
The itch has been scratched, and now the nerves can start to settle as she’s mostly satisfied the inclination to clear the room.
She’s gotta keep her back against the wall, but she’s been in tighter spots.
At least this way, she’s in control.

Extreme Makeover: 6 Before and After HDB Transformations
People have always loved a good old, dramatic makeover. (Admit it, we are all guilty of watching an episode of Extreme Makeover once in our lives.)
And nothing's more epic than seeing a rundown space turn into a picture-perfect feature! These 6 gorgeous spaces take the cake when it comes to jaw-dropping home overhauls. Not convinced? Check out their amazing before and after transformation shots!
1. Ciseern: Punggol Walk
Tumblr media
Renovation Cost: $113,000
Is this cosmopolitan suite a hotel room, fancy penthouse or landed property? How about none of the above? In fact, this humble BTO was built up from scratch.
Living Room
Tumblr media
Before: Designers had to work on a (literal) clean slate. Here, the bare, tiny windows hardly lets any light in, causing the space to look dark and cramped.
Tumblr media
After: To provide a richer tone, a bronze and gold colour scheme was used to match the HDB provided flooring. Different forms of lighting, from hanging pendants, cove lights and spotlights were utilised to counter the dimness of the original space.
Wet/Dry Kitchen
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before: Prior to being done up, the L-shaped kitchen area was exposed to the main door foyer and living area.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After: Here’s proof that a statement feature goes a long way - the trellis wall-to- ceiling feature frames the main door and connecting kitchen. Meanwhile, unsightly DB box by the door is concealed with a snazzy mirrored piece. The open-plan kitchen doesn’t skimp on storage space, with small corners and cubbyholes installed throughout the bar counter to place items.
2. Crescendo Interior & Lifestyle: Bedok
Tumblr media
If you want to talk about gritty industrials, this flat’s original layout was the real deal. And by that, we mean really grimy - think grubby wall and floor tiles that haven't been scrubbed for ages, white walls with stains; and an enclosed, elongated layout that remind us of dingy, claustrophobic factories.
Living Room
Tumblr media
Before: When you have metallic louvred windows and grilles - that’s when you know your flat is old. With only a single opening, the living area appeared closed in and shorter than let on.
Tumblr media
After: To brighten up the space, the designers repainted the walls and ceilings with a fresh coat of creamy white, and finished with spot and track lights. Surprise, surprise - this once stumpy looking apartment is even able to accommodate a platform!
Kitchen
Tumblr media
Before: How does a sickly kitchen look like? This - an unfortunate choice of pale green with yellowed tiles brought out the most in those dirt stains and blemishes. Also, it was overkill (and kind of creepy) to have three doors in a single space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After: Breaking up the initially stuffy space, the wall between the kitchen and living area was hacked and replaced with see-through sliding doors. Meanwhile, the two bathroom doors were patched up with cement-screed looking tiles.
3. EC Vision: Jurong West
Tumblr media
Renovation Cost: $80,000
This sleek and snazzy 5-roomer has improved in leaps and bounds from how it first looked like. While its initial state wasn’t horror-show worthy, the thoroughly lived-in family abode was definitely in need of a style update from the 90s (and some extreme spring cleaning).
Living Room
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before: Here is Singapore’s most iconic interior theme, the 'no style' style! Loose, mismatched furnishings, bare walls, save for a cheesy cornice that (honestly) doesn't fit into any decor at all.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After: Some people hate the thought of having extensive built-ins they can move or dismantle, but they are a great solution for storing clutter away. Here, the wall partition cum TV console doubles as a cabinet from the back, and joins with the rest of the carpentry, including a study table and recessed bench. Now, that’s what we call multipurpose!
Kitchen
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before: Where shall we start? Be it the gaudy tiled floral motifs, outdated pink and cream kitchen cabinets or the indoor bamboo hanger hanging above the dining table, there’s so much jammed into this space - it is giving us visual anxiety.
Tumblr media
After: Obviously, some things had to be done away with (such as the bamboo poles). The wet and dry kitchens were then combined into one undulating, L-shaped space. Also, the tacky cabinetry were replaced with stylish wood-laminate versions.
Master Bedroom
Tumblr media
Before: The 'no-style' theme continues on in the bedroom, as practical (but highly unappealing) items are haphazardly placed about.
Tumblr media
After: From loose furnishing to this - a built-in wardrobe was constructed, running across the entire wall and providing space to store stray bric-a-brac. The bedroom also feels calm and classy, with creamy undertones dominating; the addition of cove lights helps to give the space a posh feel.
Guest Bedroom
Tumblr media
Before: Like the master bedroom, this simple-looking space is mainly composed of loose furniture, with no particular theme in sight.
Tumblr media
After: A refreshing aquamarine hue takes centre stage in this guest bedroom. Clean lines in stark whites pair wondrously with this colour, creating a neat space that's bright and modern.
4. The Interior Design Enterprise: Choa Chu Kang Crescent
Tumblr media
Renovation Cost: $85,000
Know the phrase ‘too much going on’? Likewise, this woody, insta-worthy HDB didn't used to be filled to the brim with too much features. Case in point: the drab cornices and arches, patterned floor tiles and clutter - so much clutter.
Living cum Dining Room
Tumblr media
Before: Despite the huge square footage in this conjoined space, badly chosen decorative features like the window sill, checkerboard tiles and grand false ceiling combo make for a small and sloppy space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After: This newly refurbished space certainly didn't carry on with the traditional theme, but it does keep most of its layout intact. Some changes include building a short partition and patching up the walkway to the kitchen.
Kitchen
Tumblr media
Before: An indoor-window concept is cute, but the matching countertops and window sills are not. Also, if you are wondering why the counters run in jagged lines - don’t worry, we are equally perplexed by this safety hazard too.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After: The countertops are tapered back into simple, straight lines. The new homeowners decided to retain the cute windows, but everything else is done up in contemporary, wood-effect laminates.
Master and Guest Bedrooms
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before: Is this an optical illusion? In an unfortunate design decision, the jagged built-in wardrobe looks as if it’s falling apart. The rest of the bedroom is sparsely decorated, with plain-looking beds taking up the rest of the tiny space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After: Combining the two adjacent bedrooms by hacking the wall in between, the master bedroom now encompasses a private study/lounge and sleeping quarters. The mind-boggling wardrobes from before were replaced with a walk-in wardrobe (a.k.a. where it used to be the walkway).
Bathroom
Tumblr media
Before: While the old bathroom looks thoroughly clean, those garish floor tiles and clunky bathroom fittings had to go.
Tumblr media
After: Talk about unrecognisable! Who would have thought that thin, tiny scrap of space could fit in a decent bathtub? It also comes to show how the right bathroom finishes are everything - bronzy slate tiles provide the perfect a ritzy, upscale feel.
5. Starry Homestead: Tampines
Tumblr media
Renovation Cost: $40,000
Don’t worry, there’s enough room to lounge, prance or even play some mini golf! Even so, it is hard to imagine now that this roomy HDB once looked as if it couldn't even fit anything more than a 3-seater sofa.
Living Room
Tumblr media
Before: The main culprit? The lack of ample natural light. Due to the far-set windows on both ends, insufficient light filtering in resulted in the living room looking extremely cramped.
Tumblr media
After: Even if your room is really cramped - the key is working with what you’ve got! Without any extensive hacking, the living room looks opened up, thanks to space enhancing white walls, bright lighting and minimal furniture.
Kitchen
Tumblr media
Before: Admit it- this kitchen isn’t terrible per se. In fact, a bit of cleaning up, and the kitchen space will look as good as new! A pity though, that it doesn't fit into the new home’s clean, minimal theme.
Tumblr media
After: If it works, why fix it? Though the old cabinetry was cleared out and fitted in with a more matching, pale wood cum dark blue theme, the kitchen’s original layout was kept in this new space.
Master Bedroom
Tumblr media
Source: Property Guru
Before: Bulky furniture, like the old-fashioned wardrobe and bed, along with obstructing pillars clog up the bedroom, making it appear much smaller.
Tumblr media
After: Taking space saving to another level, the newly refurbished snooze area contains no loose furniture, nor messy decor pieces or items. Instead, the centrepiece is the bedroom's extensive platform, which houses the mattress as well as a ton of handy storage drawers underneath.
Bathroom
Tumblr media
Before: It was no mean feat on the previous homeowner’s part in fitting in everything (toilet bowl, sink and shower) into this tiny bathroom space. But just one question - why the pink WC?
Tumblr media
After: Needless to say, the pink WC was out. Instead, to keep in line with the rest of the house, marbled tiles and bathroom fixtures in classic whites are matched with stylish wooden cabinetry, while cove lights all around help to create an illusion of width.
6. Story Of Us: Hougang
Tumblr media
This clean, futuristic abode is hope for drab resales everywhere. A 180 degree turnaround, this creative, absolutely stunning space decked in stylish wooden slats and panels, once was a worn, tired looking space that had seen years of wear and tear.
Living Room
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Before: Void of all furniture, the stained walls and floors in an unappealing shade of orange reveal an oppressing landscape, obscuring the living area's vast amount of space.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After: White - the modern home’s go-to colour! Matching any type of style and material, especially woods, a white-washed brick overlay was used to give the living space a hint industrial texture.
Kitchen
Tumblr media
Before: Major throwback vibes on this retro-looking kitchen! While the white tiles look relatively clean, the countertop and sink are splitting at the edges with rust creeping in. Yikes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
After: Understandably, the old, rotting carpentry was taken out and replaced with brand new wooden cabinets. The new cooking space also houses this home’s ultimate standout - a wooden slatted ceiling feature in geometric motif.

How To Maximize the Natural Lighting in Your Custom New Home
Lighting and light fixtures are a basic component of any home. However, some custom home owners spend all their time planning the artificial lighting options for their homes at the expense of focusing on natural lighting. This is a mistake and reverses the natural order. Think of the light coming in from the outdoors as the primary light source for your home and artificial lighting as secondary. The following post offers some valuable details on the importance of natural lighting:
Natural lighting, or the light from the sun, is one of the best sources of light. Using natural light in your home will not only help save money on your electrical bill but it also it creates a warmer environment, increases your productivity, improves your mood, helps you sleep better, and gives you an increased exposure to vitamin D. Unfortunately, not every home has enough windows or access to natural lighting to turn off all your electrical lights, but when you have the chance, pull up your blinds and let the sunlight into your home! Read more at RC Willey…
The health benefits of a house should be a major consideration when building or purchasing a home. If this is a priority for you, then you should consider lots of natural lighting a must-have your custom-built home.
Other than putting in numerous large windows, you may be thinking to yourself, “What else is there to do?” You can begin by painting your walls with lighter colors, as the following post explains:
1) Light colours
Introduce lighter colours to your walls by banishing statement wallpaper and dark block colours in favour of a soft shade of white paint. Shades of white will make a space feel brighter as it reflects the natural light entering the room, rather than absorbing it.
Avoid using brilliant white paint on walls as it can make a space feel cold, an off-white shade will create a much warmer effect. Another trick is to paint the ceiling a couple of shades lighter than the walls to create the illusion of height and space. Choosing a paint with a satin finish will help reflect the light more than matt paint. Read more at House Beautiful…
Another tip you can use to maximize the natural light in your home is decorating with mirrors. They will reflect more light into your rooms. When hung in the right places, they can significantly increase the amount of light in your home. The following post explains this point:
We’ve all heard that mirrors can transform any space from gloomy to glamorous, but there are a few tricks. First, bigger is always better when using mirrors – the larger the reflective surface, the more light it will bounce around the room.
And second, your mirror needs to reflect a light source, so place it opposite or adjacent to a window as has been done with the oversized circular mirror in this San Francisco home. Hanging a mirror behind a lamp can brighten a room even further. Read more at Houzz…
Along with using mirrors to reflect the light and spread it around, invest in furniture with glass panels or mirrored accents that will do the same thing.
One final tip would be to remove any obstructions to natural light. Move any furniture that is not reflecting light a few feet from your windows to prevent them from blocking the light. Also, go for lighter fabric curtains. Finally, you can incorporate skylights in your ceilings to get more direct sunlight.
If you’re looking to construct a custom new home with the perfect amount of natural lighting, you need to work with an excellent custom home builder who will turn your dreams into reality. Oz Custom Home Builders is that company. Our experience of over 20 years has propelled us to the top of the heap when it comes to the construction of luxury homes. If You Want To Improve Your House Try These Things When you make some small improvements, you can still make a huge impact on your home's value. Actually, certain updates can increase your home by thousands. Here are several home improvement tips that will help you to get started. You should always obtain a professional inspection before you buy a home. It is always good to have a professional and neutral opinion on the home you are interested in buying. A professional can also act as a mediator, allowing the transaction to stay civil. When you are replacing the baseboards, opt for stained wood over painted for more appeal. Stained wood baseboards can help to add depth to your room and make it seem more appealing. Additionally, minor damages are not so glaringly obvious on stained boards as they are on painted boards. You could pick from a variety of colors in order to match your house's decor. Spackle all of the holes that you have in the walls. Spackle is readily available at your local home improvement or hardware store. Use a very small amount if you need to fill tiny holes. You can use a bobby pin to put spackle in the tiniest holes. After the spackle has dried, use something stiff, such as a credit card, to smooth the hole until your wall looks smooth. Once this is done, you can start painting. This will completely transform the look of your wall. Think about putting in matching metal fixtures if you want to change the look of your bathroom. There are many varieties of bathroom hardware available, such as cabinet knobs and toilet paper holders. Many home improvement stores offer these fixtures as part of a complete, coordinating package, that can easily be installed in a single day. Any bedroom can look better through the use of throw pillows. Go get some old clothes like a pair of jeans, some old concert t-shirts or anything with a cool design and fasten them around the pillows, then sew them on. This can make a great personal addition to any teenager's room, and give their room a bit of personality. A great way to improve your households safety is to discuss with the entire family the different escape routes available if needed. It is normal to panic when the unexpected happens. Plan a safe and simple way to get out the house incase of an emergency. Planning this in advance allows you to model the home in such a way that you won't meet obstructions in the escape. If your living room seems plain and boring, add an adventurous print to the room to liven it up. Animal prints are a great way to add personality. Just add a small pillow, rug, or picture that features animal print and you are good to go. Brighten up your kitchen with new cabinet knobs and handles! Many people focus on the doors without realizing that simply changing the hinges and handles on cabinets can do wonders. After you have removed the dated hardware, use that time to thoroughly clean the surfaces of your cabinetry and drawers. All you have to do after that is screw the new hardware into place! Consider installing peepholes in the outside doors of your home. You never know who's standing outside on your porch unless you can see them, and seeing them before opening the door is important. Although some people will hire a professional to do this, adding a peep hole is actually one of the easiest improvements out there. It only takes your time and a drill. A peephole will give you that extra sense of reassurance when someone knocks. Paint the walls to update a dated looking home. A whole room can look better with new paint. While painting a room is very inexpensive, it can increase the value of your home significantly. Consider using light colors that will brighten up your home and blend well with existing decor. As this article went over, getting a home improvement plan executed isn't all that hard in the long run. If you allow yourself the time for proper planning, it will be a much better process. Implement some of the advice you learned from this article and start increasing you home's value.
Simple Home Improvement Advice To Build A Better Life
Getting information about home projects, with all the information out there, can be overwhelming. When armed with the right information, tackling a home improvement project does not need to be overwhelming. The advice you will glean from the article here will help you tackle the improvement projects you have been putting off.
When choosing between stained and painted baseboards, many feel that stained woods are more universally appealing. Furthermore, the look and feel of wood is perfectly suited to all types of decor and style. Stained backboards also serve the benefit of defending against stains and marks, which can increase its longevity. Stain is also very affordable and you can find it in a wide range of colors.
Just because a room is lacking in square footage doesn't mean it has to seem cramped or confined. Incorporate light into this room to add a vibrant atmosphere and positive feel. Clean your windows, and open your blinds. A room can look a lot bigger when you use natural light. Keep your room clutter free and paint the walls with pale colors. This simple change can make your room seem larger.
If you're trying to cut down on counter space within the kitchen, you may want to purchase an over-the-range microwave. These microwave ovens are installed where the range hood normally goes. They offer various features, including convection cooking, and prices range widely. The majority of these units feature recirculating filters rather than vents, so they are best for people who do not need powerful venting options.
Paint your old walls with coordinating stripes before installing paneling. It doesn't matter how well you try to install the paneling, the old wall seems to want to peek through. To minimize this issue, measure and mark where each panel will meet before installing. If you paint the wall to match the paneling, you will not see any cracks in between the panels.
You can make a lot of improvements in your kitchen. Clean ugly grease stains from your walls with a solution of TSP mixed two to one with water. This solution will help you get rid of stains and remove the paint. Re-paint your kitchen in a color you love; you'll be shocked how great the heart of your home looks when you've finished.
Don't forget about the area outside your house. If you have enough space behind your house, add a patio where you can entertain people. It's the ideal spot for grilling steaks or even just enjoying some fresh air and relaxation after work.
Sitting on chair cushions flattens them over time. A great way to bring life back to your cushions is setting them in the sun. The sun evaporates the moisture from the filling, and they bounce right back to their original shape. Flip the cushions and don't leave them out in the sun too long, since they may become faded.
Don't neglect your porch when doing home improvements. A porch is highly visible to the public and gives a lasting first impression to guest visiting your home. Keep it tidy and make it interesting with unique lights, or beautiful flower arrangements. This will increase your home's curb appeal.
A simple home improvement is to tie up or cut the loops and extra cord length on your window blinds. This will help ensure the safety of children and pets. Leave an adequate amount of cord so that it is still functional and nothing more. Tie it up or cut it to avoid any unfortunate events.
Many times older homes have carpet throughout, and it can be worn, stained and outdated after years of use. Wooden floors generally last longer and look more classic.
When engaging in a home improvement project, there are new dangers. Any drywall manufactured in China should be avoided. Almost 8 years after their products first started wreaking havoc (2005), some Chinese drywall is still sub-par. Much of it suffers from unacceptable quality control. Also, this drywall can give off harmful gases, which may affect the health of your family.
As you learned from this article, home improvement sometimes ends up being harder than is really necessary. Now that you have the inspiration and knowledge from this article, you should be more confident in your abilities to make a difference in your home. With this valuable information, you can see your work completed that much sooner, without information that doesn't make sense.
