i remember seeing a review for this book before i bought it praising how accurate its portrayal of scientists is, and quite frankly after having read it its depiction of scientists should be considered an insult. it feels like a stereotype of scientists. to this book, scientists have no concern for loss of human life, be it their own or others, and will completely eschew moral and ethical lines for the sake of information. there are multiple instances where someone is gruesomely killed and no one else cares. i fucking hate this book.
also i finally finished Into The Drowning Deep so i never have to look at it again
my review: legitimately one of the worst books i have had the misfortune of reading, made worse by the fact that its all of the tropes that i love and hold dearly. everything feels like a slap in the face to all that i adore. can't even write amphibians, ancient or otherwise, right, and it does poorly on the other scientific facts. you might be drawn to it thinking it'd be a fun found footage with spec evo mermaids. you would be wrong. it has marine biologist david peters who is right (of course she's right), a megalodon believer, and it doesn't get better.
#all the care guide says is 'biomass'#i have nothing good to say about this book#this isnt even getting into how marine biologist david peters is clearly The Favorite#who is always right about everything and knows everything before its about to happen#and this isnt getting into things like#randomly including the main character's ex solely to kill him#(when he started off as a Whatever ex-boyfriend but then they had to make him Ontologically Evil)#(you know. the tired trope of taking a guy who is not great but like. is just a guy. everyone knows someone like that.)#(and just go out of the way to make him SO BAD and SO EVIL and dump all their hatred onto him)#and the trope of making the deep sea a murder hellzone where everything is as evil and bad as possible#just throwing everything together in one to make the Most Evil Most Dangerous Predator Ever#ignoring common sense and natural law both#while still doing its DAMNED BEST to make you think its SO ACCURATE and SO SCIENTIFIC#you know. grand sweeping notions of humanity and nature. that dont hold up to the slightest scrutiny.#this is a fucking preachy book and i hate it even more for it#it wears what its Intent is on its sleeve and i hate it
