I don't think any well written work with unreliable narrators can be understood if you're disregarding everything from those narrators— understanding where and why they're unreliable is key. That requires discernment rather than bright line rules.

Otherwise, the narrators wouldn't be unreliable. They'd be reliably dishonest, and that wouldn't make for a compelling or relatable story.

#like if you think dazai or vanitas are always lying you are not paying attention #they both have cues and tells #and the supporting characters are legends/keys to understanding when and where theyre dis/honest #kafka asagiri has explicitly littered dazai's tells throughout the series but theyre not hidden #and then i havent seen anyone else with my vnc theory but it's been so far reliable for reconciling vanitas's behavior #but it's only a theory for now #so instead the more reliable key is where noé discusses his motives #and in moments of chaos and panic #vanitas will reveal something he. shouldnt know. but does. contextualizing him a little more each time.
