'art room' but usually refers to a cabinet of curiosities. :)#one of the things i love about jack gilbert - besides his writing meeting baldwin's ideal 'clean as a bone' remit - is when his poems#carry forward something of his past as a factory worker & steelworker prior to being a celebrated published poet#(his most famous - and my favourite - line calls for 'the stubbornness to accept our gladness in the ruthless furnace of the world')#it's a shame (to me) when biographies place the beginning of an artist's 'career' after a time (or a lifetime!) in working class jobs......#besides the fact that it perpetuates this fantasy of the Born Artist i think it's also kind of. disingenuous? shitty?#to discount the Work (even if it was something they hated or only did to survive - eapcially then!) that comes before/during The Art Work#and the next poem i'm posting of his - what song should we sing? - is emblematic of this as well !!!!!!!!!!!#idk! kicking my soapbox to the curb and carrying on :)
