I did not need to learn that there's a 1979 adaptation of Rebecca with Jeremy Brett and Joanna David (two of the very few actors that could make me care for these characters and actually engage with the story) and that it has never been released by the BBC in anything resembling relatively good quality (there's only a blurry VHS making the rounds on YT).

David Tennant's Obscure Short Films: 1996's Quality Control
I'm back for a short(er) little David Tennant in Obscure Performances post today. Let's have a teeny-tiny chat about another rarity of David's, shall we? - a short film he did in 1996 called Quality Control. And when I say this is a rarity, believe me….it's a rarity.
I've at least been able to confirm David acted in this short film, for he mentions it as a film credit in two places: the 1996 programme for The Herbal Bed, and the 1997 programme for Hurly Burly - as evidenced by this cast listing of his from my Hurly Burly programme:
Quality Control has very little to no presence on the Internet, and there are only a few mentions of its existence. The first one I've been able to track which attributed the short to David was from a "David Tennant Fact Of The Day" post from May 2012.
The second mention is from the British Film Institute (BFI). If you study this notation, you'll notice another interesting detail: unlike many other works, the BFI does NOT hold any film or video materials relating to Quality Control. So they don't have a copy!
The BFI describes the film as a "comedy in which a job centre trainee finds himself totally inept in his new position of quality controller at a skateboard factory." But I hoped I might find a few other clues from another contemporary source: newspapers. So that's where I went!
All of the descriptions said Quality Control was a 20-minute short comedy - but I also learned it was the trainee's first day on the job, too. One can also assume (and I certainly do) David plays the role of the trainee. Here are some various listings I found:
What's very interesting, though, is something the BFI doesn't list: Quality Control was also re-broadcast two years later in 1998! The 'Fact of The Day' I mentioned earlier clued me into that detail, and that tidbit was invaluable in my search for mentions of the short. Why? Because this one's a real tough one to search. David's never mentioned in any printed synopsis, and seriously…just try to do a search using only the words, "Quality Control." It's an utter nightmare!
But knowing what I knew, I was able to add to the information the 'Fact Of The Day' had provided. Quality Control originally aired at 1:55p on 10 Jun 1996 on BBC Channel 4. In 1998, Channel 4 aired it two more times: on 8 Feb 1998 at 3:30p, and at 1:30p on 26 Oct 1998. It was also repeated regionally on S4C at 1:30p on 6 Nov 1998.
Its repetition in 1998 has intrigued me. It implies the BBC kept a copy of the short from 1996 to its re-air dates in 1998. The BFI listing for the short says it doesn't have a copy in its archives, but unless the BBC has subsequently erased it, a copy of that short might still exist. Somewhere. I'd love to find it, as it's one of the few things David did during that time I haven't seen. So we have no screenshots. But we know he did it. And who knows if the BBC has it in their archive.
But you know, maybe someone's got it recorded somewhere on an old Betamax tape.

Sediments (Sedimentos)
This Spanish film takes place in a remote rural area in Leon, we follow 6 transexual women on the trip, one of them is celebrating her birthday, as many things in life the trip is its own reward for both us and the characters in the film.
The women have in common being transexual women and little else, some are educated, some have little or no education, some are spiritual, some put more their trust in science, one has not transitioned, the one celebrating her birthday has very solid support and affection from her family while for others that is mixed or non existent, the one that has not transitioned gives us hints of quite a reactionary political outlook in life while one of the others, that organizes a support group where they all met, has a deep understanding of gender politics and could bore you to death with that.
So what starts as a jolly trip little by little gets more conflictive, personalities and beliefs clash but they manage not to get at each other's throats and actually the film ends with a sense that they will support each other even if at times they can't stand each other (which as it happens was kind of confirmed by two of the actresses present in a Q&A since this was also screened as part of the BFI Flare festival, where this film has also been shown).
Their paths were and continue to be different, some of them had to become prostitutes to make a living, which has been specially brutal for one of them, another one is young and in university and with the support of her family she is making a life of her own, another one is twitching all the time hinting at goodness knows what mental processes but she becomes a figure of wisdom when talking astrology to the others.
It is difficult to talk about these women because the film is a take on real life, the trip is real, the interactions are real, they got acting coaching and prepared for filming but once the camera started rolling we see what was filmed as it happened. Is it a documentary? Probably yes, but it is not a naive or orthodox approach to doing documentaries, but something very astute that gives us access to lives of which most of us know very little, they women may be arguing about themselves or flirting with men, but they know where the camera is and they clearly know how not to overact.

What I wish I'd Known
By Sophie McVeigh
Samuel Johnson may have been right when he said that 'when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life', but that doesn't mean it's without its challenges, and when you move to a big, bustling capital city, it's easy to feel like everybody knows exactly what they're doing except you. With this in mind, we spoke to students past and present to find out what pearls of wisdom they could pass on – about London, about the UK and the London Film School (LFS) itself – to help make the transition that little bit easier.
Head Space
Not everybody finds it easy to work at home, what with the fridge always there to distract you and those cupboards that suddenly need reorganising. Thankfully there are some great spots not too far from school where you can get your homework head on. All of London’s public libraries are free to join and have free WIFI - Charing Cross, Westminster and Holborn are the nearest to school, while the British Library near St Pancras is a great place to feel inspired. A short and Instagram-friendly walk across the river will take you to the BFI library, which is not only peaceful and free to use, but also crammed with so many books on film that the Work and Research Journal will practically write itself.

Speaking of the Work and Research Journal...
We're at film school, so it's tempting to want to focus ALL our time on our films, but they're not kidding when they tell you not to leave the journal the last minute. Make notes as you go along and your life will be a whole lot easier when it comes to the deadline. Personally, whenever something came up in class that I thought I could use, I wrote a massive WRJ!!! next to it so it was easier to find later in my notes. People get frustrated with the journal when they leave it until the Thursday before it's due, but if you use it as a space for reflection on what you've learnt it can end up being pretty … enjoyable? OK, I won't say enjoyable. Useful though. It's definitely useful.

Free Films!
Also while you’re at the BFI, don’t forget to take advantage of the free cinema access for LFS students. You’ll need your LFS badge, and to get there a good half an hour early to secure seats, but as long as the showing isn’t sold out they’ll be happy to let you in. Hang around at non-peak times and you’re sure to bag a seat. Horror fans, don’t miss the current Stephen King season to celebrate the author’s 70th birthday.
Cheap films!
If that's still not enough silver screen for you, Odeon does a £17.99 per month ‘Limitless’ cinema pass (£19.99 if you include central London), which, if you went everyday, would work out as 58p per film - for trivia fans, that's the equivalent of going to the cinema in 1975. Speaking of bargains, for the annual membership of £7.50, the Prince Charles Cinema just off Leicester Square does weekly £1 members screenings, randomly chosen from a program which includes anything from the latest releases to classic musicals.

Cheap everything!
The National Union of Students (NUS) extra card will get you discounts on everything from pizza to Apple products, and even your supermarket bill. The Unidays app does a similar thing without the £12 annual fee, while the Student Oyster card gets you a third off London transport. Since London has one of the most expensive underground networks in the world, you might want to think about this. If you’re planning on travelling much outside of London, the Young Person’s Railcard also gets you a third off tickets. And don’t miss Amazon Prime’s 6 months free for students.

Money in the bank
Now that you've made all those savings you're going to need somewhere to keep them. It can take a while to get an appointment to set up a bank account, so you should start trying as early as possible - the further out from zone one (Central London) you go, the quicker it is. You'll need to take a letter confirming your enrolment at the school, signed by LFS. The vast majority of UK banks don't charge you to hold an account and actually give you stuff to attract your custom, so it's worth shopping around for the best deal. The major ones like Barclays, Lloyds, Santander and HSBC are currently offering incentives such as free NUS cards, Young Person's Railcards (see above) and Amazon gift vouchers, as well as the standard interest-free overdraft. Be careful with these though and read the small print – most are only free while you're studying, and you'll be charged interest if you're still in it when you graduate.

Your health is your wealth
In order to get registered with your local GP ('general practitioner', or family doctor), you will need a piece of mail to prove where you live (since GPs serve their local area). Your first official appointment with the GP is then only to fill out the registration info, so if you actually need to start seeing a doctor sooner rather than later, try to make your first TWO appointments at the same time. There are urgent care centres around London where you can go without an appointment if you are having an immediate issue and can't wait for your doctor's appointment, and they do take your NHS insurance but you will need to have your NHS number. If you don't have it, your GP's office can provide it to you at the front desk. In the UK, healthcare is free at the point of delivery, and although we pay £8 per prescription, students can avoid this charge by filling out an HC2 certificate – see below for more information.

(Thanks to Braden LuBell for these words to the wise)
All work and no play ...
OK, so now you've got your money and your health covered, it's time to enjoy yourself. Time flies at graduate school and the best way to make the most of it is to throw yourself into whatever opportunities come your way. Whether it's the photography society, script clinic, the running club or volunteering for the SU, taking a break from your work while also widening your social circle is the best way to find people who share your passions that you want to work with. Talk to Emily Marquet, the Student Union's Community Liaison, or if something doesn't exist, start it yourself. Cheese appreciation society, anyone?
(Christina Morelli, joiner-inner extraordinaire)
Photo Credit: Barbecue in Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Jackie Mahoney
And on the subject of food ...
The canteen is a great place to socialise, but sometimes after a morning in Cinema A you want to take those sandwiches outside for a bit of fresh air, Vitamin D and some down time. Of course, in Covent Garden you’ll find an abundance of café terraces, but they’re not always designed for the student budget. Thankfully, within 5 minutes of the school there are some beautiful courtyards to picnic in - some well-known (Neal’s Yard, St Martin’s Courtyard) and some more hidden - Ch.Ramphal Sangwan Park and The Phoenix Garden are two of my favourites. If you feel like stretching your legs even more, a ten-minute walk will take you to Lincoln’s Inn Fields, an unexpectedly lovely park right in the heart of the city, where they even let you barbecue if the mood takes you.
Language barriers
Don't feel bad if, when you arrive at the school, it feels like your English isn't quite as good as everyone else's. This is an international school and we're here to share our influences and inspiration, not our mastering of the present perfect. If you need help, ask, and if you find it difficult at first just trust that after a couple of terms of intense classes, film watching, discussion, socialising and set life you're going to be chattering away like John Oliver.
(Andrea Garcia)
You can stand under my ...
Umbrella. The most important piece of advice I can give you. Carry an umbrella at all times. You might be lucky enough to come from a country where the weather in the morning gives you some indication of what it will be for the rest of the day, or even the next half an hour, but London likes to keep you guessing.
(Sophie McVeigh, who needs to learn to follow her own advice)
What about you? What are your tips for getting the most out of life in London? Share below anything you think new (or current) students would find useful/life-saving.

Citizen Kane - Art Direction
Many think of KANE as the work of Welles, the auteur, which is surprising, given that its most remembered aspects are credited to Welles' crew: Toland developed his deep-focus photography while shooting THE LONG VOYAGE HOME (1940); Mankiewicz had long desired to create a multiple flashback plot (to which he added the Rosebud gimmick); and Perry Ferguson gave Kane's house the sense of infinite depth with clever innovations of muslin ceilings and incomplete sets bordered by black velvet.
Robert Carringer in The Making of Citizen Kane, while insisting on the collaborative nature of this and all films, lauds Welles' role in collecting and collating the contributions of others. Before we reject the idea that KANE is primarily Welles' film, we must remember that it is through his crew that an auteur shapes his work. With the talents of those surrounding him, Welles created the first celluloid version of his world filled with beams of light and pools of darkness. The film also delves into the themes of power, perception, passion and love that pervade his body of work. Though the innovations may not have been his, he encouraged their use and melded them into a cohesive whole. Doubt not--this is Welles' film.
Although credited as an assistant, the film's art direction was done by Perry Ferguson. Welles and Ferguson got along during their collaboration. In the weeks before production began Welles, Toland and Ferguson met regularly to discuss the film and plan every shot, set design and prop. Ferguson would take notes during these discussions and create rough designs of the sets and story boards for individual shots. After Welles approved the rough sketches, Ferguson made miniature models for Welles and Toland to experiment on with a periscope in order to rehearse and perfect each shot. Ferguson then had detailed drawings made for the set design, including the film's lighting design. The set design was an integral part of the film's overall look and Toland's cinematography.
In the original script the Great Hall at Xanadu was modeled after the Great Hall in Hearst Castle and its design included a mixture of Renaissance and Gothic styles. "The Hearstian element is brought out in the almost perverse juxtaposition of incongruous architectural styles and motifs," wrote Carringer. Before RKO cut the film's budget, Ferguson's designs were more elaborate and resembled the production designs of early Cecil B. DeMille films and Intolerance. The budget cuts reduced Ferguson's budget by 33 percent and his work cost $58,775 total, which was below average at that time. To save costs Ferguson and Welles re-wrote scenes in Xanadu's living room and transported them to the Great Hall. A large staircase from another film was found and used at no additional cost. When asked about the limited budget, Ferguson said "Very often--as in that much-discussed 'Xanadu' set in Citizen Kane--we can make a foreground piece, a background piece, and imaginative lighting suggest a great deal more on the screen than actually exists on the stage." According to the film's official budget there were 81 sets built, but Ferguson said there were between 106 and 116.
Still photographs of Oheka Castle in Huntington, New York, were used in the opening montage, representing Kane's Xanadu estate. Ferguson also designed statues from Kane's collection with styles ranging from Greek to German Gothic. The sets were also built to accommodate Toland's camera movements. Walls were built to fold and furniture could quickly be moved. The film's famous ceilings were made out of muslin fabric and camera boxes were built into the floors for low angle shots. Welles later said that he was proud that the film production value looked much more expensive than the film's budget. Although neither worked with Welles again, Toland and Ferguson collaborated in several films in the 1940s.
Peter Cowie in his "Study of a Colossus": "Kane is all things to all men." Jorge Luis Borges: "CITIZEN KANE is a labyrinth without a center." Francois Truffaut in his "Citizen Kane": "We [the French cinephiles] loved this film because it was complete: psychological, social, poetic, dramatic, comic, baroque, strict, and demanding. It is a demonstration of the source of power and an attack on the force of power, it is a hymn to youth and a meditation on old age, an essay on the vanity of all material ambition and at the same time a poem on old age and the solitude of human beings, genius or monster or monstrous genius."
“Mr. Kane got everything he wanted then lost it. Perhaps Rosebud was something he couldn’t get or something he lost.” In the final shot, the latter is confirmed.

Write-up - Masterclass: Charlie Brooker in Conversation, 09/04/2017
This event was part of the BFI’s inaugural television festival. (Really good to see TV getting some love as well as films on this sort of platform!) LBC radio host and Newsnight presenter James O’Brien was asking the questions.
It was held at the BFI IMAX, which meant there was a massive screen in front of which there was a tiny plinth from which Brooker and O’Brien sat and chatted.
I was three rows from the front, central section (nobody was allowed to sit in the first row – maybe Brooker can’t cope with people being that close, idk). There was a camera operator filming from one row behind me – not sure what they plan to do with the footage, but keep an eye out for it potentially turning up.
I’m trying to primarily mention stuff here that I haven’t seen covered in interviews before (or just stuff I personally found interesting), as this was essentially a swift go-through of Brooker’s career and certainly some of it’s been covered before. Anything in quotes here may not be word for word perfect as this is all just taken from my notes.
Brooker (looked great and) was wearing a black polo shirt, black trousers, khaki jacket and grey trainers. If you ever had any doubt whether he’s just wearing his own clothes on Wipe, they’re the same trainers he wore in 2016 Wipe when he gets up from the sofa after Trump wins the election and walks off the set (they showed this clip! I don’t offhand remember things that well! I’m not that fucking weird!).
Said massive screen was filled with a massive picture of Brooker (the picture above, so if it’s a bit photoshopped I understand better why now). Predictably when he came on, Brooker reacted with some discomfort to this truly giant photo of himself and said he looked like “a dick” in it.
O’Brien kicked things off by saying he’d received an email from BFI’s comms department telling him that Brooker is a “capable talker” and that his main job would be to keep things on track and watch the time. (This was definitely a problem in Brooker’s interview with Grace Dent, to be fair.) He did a good job of keeping Brooker roughly on track… and Brooker kept apologising for rambling on.
This is pretty much going to be random bits and pieces in the order which they were talked about from here on in:
Brooker misunderstood the requested measurements for his nascent cartoons for Oink magazine, thinking they were in millimetres not centimetres, and so drew his first cartoons for them very small. He used this as the first of several examples of him having no idea what he was doing.
Assuming if you are reading this, you will already know Brooker didn’t get his degree because he wrote his dissertation on video games (an unacceptable topic). O’Brien asked what the thesis actually was. Brooker: “I don’t think it had one! I was just a fan. ‘I like video games’, basically.”
Brooker used to work at a CEX! [second hand video games shop] (I have a deep affection for CEX.) He did cartoons for their ads as well.
Brooker described tvgohome.com as primarily a discipline to see if he could reliably produce something every fortnight. He confirmed there were no ads on it and it wasn’t monetised in any way (except for the exposure that it gave him that lead to job offers).
Brooker said he was first working in The 11 O’Clock Show’s writers’ room in 1998 or 1999. If the cameramen laughed during the rehearsal (“they would laugh at ‘cock’ and ‘fuck’”), that material would stay in.
There was a sketch show based on tvgohome.com in 2001, but Brooker didn’t think it was very good, in part because he didn’t sit in on the edit (he always likes to do this now).
Brooker’s hands were so fidgety when they showed the 2016 Wipe clip (Trump’s win)! To be fair, it was on an IMAX screen in front of loads of people. (I think I saw Jonathon Ross in the audience but I’m not 100% sure.)
Chris Morris corner: O’Brien hypothesised that Brooker really started on the satire when he met Morris. Brooker didn’t really disagree or agree with this (“Maybe…”). Brooker said (as he has elsewhere) that he met Chris Morris through a mutual friend, that Chris Morris contributed some material to tvgohome [under the name Sid Peach] and that they talked about the Nathan Barley [TV show] idea “for four or five years”, because Morris’s gestation period is slow. Brooker said he enjoyed the conversations he had with Morris about Nathan Barley during this period. Whether the show happened or not was definitely in the hands of Morris, as Brooker seems very much in his ‘I have no idea how to get TV made’ stage at this point (also a bit in awe of Morris maybe?) – O’Brien asked Brooker if he ever asked Morris ‘well, are we going to do this then’ and Brooker said “No! He keeps going on about it – I thought unless he’s having a breakdown this will happen eventually.” Brooker said Morris gets things made through sheer force of will.
Brooker also said that his role in the creation of Morris’s Paedogeddon was to “sit in his office and say ‘that would be funny’ to suggestions I thought would be funny”. And Brooker realised Morris could get anything made when he got Paedogeddon made, as when Brooker first heard the idea he thought that it would never get made (this is an understandable viewpoint).
Brooker said the idea for Screenwipe was based on Bushell on the Box, which was certainly not a TV show I previously knew had existed. (Weirdly this sort of reminded me of Peep Show being inspired by Being Caprice in its similar obscurity.) An early title idea was ‘Charlie Brooker’s TV Inferno’ and (as he’s mentioned before) it was going to be like a sort of TV viewing party. (“As if I’m any good at interacting with human beings.”)
Brooker described his old flat where they used to shoot Screenwipe as a flat, not a house. (Maisonette? It does have stairs…)
Brooker described himself as “flailing immediately at the most casual barbeque” regarding current affairs knowledge, so thought could self-improve by reviewing the news as if it was a trashy TV show. (Newswipe is born). He said it felt weightier than the TV criticism.
Brooker doesn’t watch the news (if it can be avoided, which as he said often it can’t now) when he’s not doing a News/year-end Wipe! He said he avoids it as it makes him sad but also because he knows he’ll have to review it at the end of the year now anyway. As he’s said elsewhere, he felt so morose about 2016 he wasn’t sure at one point in November whether he could do the show, but interestingly said that doing Have I Got News For You straight after Trump’s election made him feel a bit better because he “had to do it” [had to face it and do the show].
Brooker doesn’t like the word satire.
They plan Wipes using storyboards, putting in sofa, desk or “walky-talky, as we call them” (!) sections. Brooker said it took them a “fucking long time” to learn to do that and they used to shoot loads more than they needed. More on the production method: researchers condense hundreds of hours of logged footage, and Brooker watches some of it with the writers and they come up with one liners while they’re watching it then.
Brooker called TV “a disgusting lie” in a very circa 2006 Screenwipe sort of way as he explained Wipe is filmed on the same set location where the Apprentice board room is filmed [shots suggest it’s in Canary Wharf when it’s in fact a set in Acton], and he walks out to the ‘Apprentice losers’ café’ (The Bridge Cafe) in 2016 Wipe because it really is next door to their set, just as it’s next door to the Apprentice’s set.
Brooker thought Dead Set would end his career (as a critic) if it ended up being shit, as he wouldn’t be able to critique TV again. He said he was surprised it turned out so well.
Dead Set has a lot of shake-cam – Brooker said after a clip “it makes you feel a bit sick” watching it on an IMAX screen. He also pointed out a “clunky” bit of ADR that I didn’t notice at all!
Brooker said he really enjoyed making Dead Set. Dead Set was delayed for a long time because of the Big Brother racism controversy in 2007.
O’Brien [I’m making this look much more 1984 than it was] asked if Brooker was at a point in his career when he could anything he wanted made. Brooker considered this, said he didn’t know, but he was sure “as a psychological exercise” he could come up with something unbroadcastable.
Brooker was in the writer’s room for 8 Out of 10 Cats for a bit. O’Brien said that you don’t get into those rooms by accident. Brooker (sort of) insisted that he did, saying that he got that job because the same production company [Zeppatron, of Endemol] were doing both that and Dead Set.
When asked by O’Brien about ideas getting rejected, Brooker said he wrote a sitcom that was rejected called ‘God Save the Queen’ about a punk band (“basically the Sex Pistols”) getting hanged by a Tory MP for treason in 1977 and then “going through the space time continuum” to the then present day. He said what dates it now is that they’re “complaining about ringtones”. (This sounds nuts. Somebody commission this now.)
Brooker pitched A Touch of Cloth five years before it got made.
Brooker liked any TV [and/or film] growing up that made him feel “sick and lost”, like The Wicker Man.
Brooker said he had been writing an episode of the next series of Black Mirror that day, and he’s made it “so fucking horrible it amuses me”.
Talking about getting to do most of the things he wanted to do when he was growing up, Brooker said “I haven’t made a ZX Spectrum game yet”. O’Brien asked if he’s ever written for video games. Brooker said no, he wouldn’t know how to get into that as it’s a very different discipline, and with the notable exception of The Last of Us he just wants to skip the story when it comes up in games so he can play the game!
Brooker originally pitched eight half hours for Black Mirror, and planned to only write one to two of them himself. Was keen for it, like Dead Set, to be played straight, unlike The Twilight Zone which he described as “a bit camp”.
The pig fucking idea came from an idea he’d had for ages of doing a spoof of 24 where Jack Bauer had to fuck a pig.
(O’Brien acknowledged that Brooker has been asked about this before.) Brooker said he’d be writing blackmail notes or “running shirtless into traffic, screaming” if he knew about the whole [Cameron] pig thing, not writing Black Mirror episodes.
Clip of White Christmas was played, meaning giant IMAX Jon Hamm!
Brooker, it should be noted, gave a little nervous laugh before everyone applauded after every single clip shown.
The clip was of Hamm’s character explaining the cookie/copy technology in this episode. Brooker: “That’s a lot of exposition. Fucking hell.”
Brooker said he thinks the stage direction he wrote in the script for when the copy’s light goes out was “The LED dims forlornly.” :(
Brooker said he didn’t know stage directions had to be written in scripts (“I thought you just wrote dialogue!”) until he read a script of Ross Kemp: Ultimate Force. O’Brien said he hadn’t been going to ask one of his intended questions – do you read much – until Brooker mentioned that, which was some of the least pretentious reading in the history of reading (O’Brien’s words). Brooker said that he doesn’t read much. When he reads he reads non-fiction. At the moment he just reads “fucking kids’ books; the Mr Men”.
Netflix Black Mirror differences: on a global scale, and a larger budget, but he described the budget as still not being large. Brooker said San Junipero was the first episode he wrote for the latest series, and that he wrote it very quickly, but he originally thought [spoiler if you haven’t seen it] seeing the two main characters in hospital would be the ending and then he surprised himself by keeping going. He was very specific in his instructions for the arcade games in this episode, and was genuinely very disappointed they couldn’t clear Outrun for use.
Brooker said he was worried about writing San Junipero as it was a love story between women and he isn’t a women and also “I have no human emotions”.
Brooker thinks satire is counterproductive and that change only comes from “mass peaceful civil disobedience”. So there you go kids.
There were a few questions from the audience, which were… mostly OK. Asked about personal fears going into his work, Brooker cited White Bear, saying he constantly worried about “being put in a perspex case and accused of murder”. He also said he worried about scarring his leg on the edge of the glass coffee table he was sitting behind. Just that he’s a constant worrier, basically. He also said he worried about running out of ideas.
AMAZING question phrasing from I think a 16 year old student, who also said her teacher “makes us read your Guardian columns for revision” (“fucking hell”, said Brooker). “How would you advise getting into TV and journalism? Would you just work in shops like you did, or… ?”
(Brooker said it was much more difficult now and he was creating a website that lead to everything else when website were unusual things. He advised uploading something to youtube, but making it the most personal and idiosyncratic thing you can do both to attract attention and because if it is successful at attracting attention you will have to write for other people for a while and not get to do your own stuff for a while.)
(For the journalism, Brooker said he had no idea. When people would tell him he had to come up with an angle he’d think “what the fuck is an angle?”. He said he liked writing a TV column because he didn’t have to come up with what he’d be writing about.)
Someone asked if he agreed with a journalist quote who said he was a “disappointed idealist”. Brooker: isn’t everyone? Brooker said he writes to amuse/entertain himself rather than convey a message, and finds preachiness in other’s work annoying.
Someone asked if he was taking any pitches (no, in part to avoid any accusations of stealing someone’s idea just because they happen to have a similar one to something he may already be working on). Brooker said he’s “not very good at bringing other people in”, and that for this series of Black Mirror they were looking at getting more creatives involved and also looking at how to structure a writer’s room as he doesn’t really do this currently. Hopefully encouraging news for those who would like to see more off-camera diversity.
Someone asked him if he’d seen anything in the news that’s more horrible than what he could create for Black Mirror. Brooker: “Yes, of course! And it’s really happening, the news!” (I sort of want to make ‘It’s really happening, the news” my new blog title.)
I wanted to ask, but didn’t get called on (er, also I was too shy to put up my hand, probably why) about diversity – Brooker’s said in the past he doesn’t necessarily imagine all of Black Mirror’s storylines with the gender, race and/or sexuality of the eventual main characters, and that he consciously injects that diversity – wanted to ask him if there was a point he got more conscious about doing this, and also that hopefully the benefits of it are self-evident but what would he say to people who are worried about getting it right or aren’t doing it at the moment. Or something along these lines. Because I’d be interested and also let’s get the straight white men who are doing well on the in front of camera diversity front to talk to other straight white male writers about how they can too.
At the end, Brooker said ‘oh, we go!’ and jumped up to leave with O’Brien in quite an amusing / adorable way.
Hope some of that write up was interesting to you! It was a great and well-run hour and a bit event that I really enjoyed attending.

gay or disappointing, fucky or trash
Okay. So I ventured back to tumblr and have a general sense of what went down at the screening (though I have not been spoiled for plot and don't want to be). If anyone wants to read, I have a few thoughts. First things first: you take care of you, do whatever you need to do. Me? I am cautiously optimistic, for a few reasons. 1) far less spoilery things than a kiss/confirmation have been edited out of bfi screenings in the past. 2) things are clearly fucky. The biggest thing I keep going back to is skull hell. This took a lot of work for arwel to do, and I sincerely can't think of a reason to have done it that is coincidental. 3) the writers care about giving the audience a good surprise more than anything else. And I know some people disagree with that, and that's okay if you do. But it is what it is. Whenever moffat and gatiss go rogue like this in interviews, it tends to bother me less than other people, so I'm willing to accept this and move forward. 4) I genuinely don't think the writers felt that introducing a psychotic secret Holmes sister would be "the one thing that everyone got wrong" that they want to fix. And I genuinely can't think of what other element of Holmes canon would meet this criteria. 5) from the sounds of it, if we get exactly what was shown on Thursday, claims of "television history" will have been wildly exaggerated. 6) from the sounds of it, if we get exactly what was shown on Thursday, there are some big plot points that will have gone unaddressed, or even worse, retconned. And keep in mind that we have been told by characters in the show that there are no loose ends, and by cast and crew outside the show that there will not be any coincidences. Ultimately it comes down to this: I'm not going to make proclamations or draw any conclusions until I have all the data in front of me. I fell for this show because of the good writing. I know what the writers are capable of, and that the episode is categorically VERY good. I trust the evidence of my own eyes. I also trust what we have been told inside the show itself: TRUST YOUR INTUITIONS. And so I am. Not to mention, the entire plot of TLD is Sherlock getting his mind fucked with, being manipulated to believe he can't trust his own perceptions anymore. Being told from everyone on earth that what he sees and believes is wrong, it doesn't exist. Of course, ultimately, what he sees and believes turns out to be not only true but central to the plot. What I'm saying here is that we're (probably) in the morgue scene right now, guys. Just like Sherlock was presented with fake Faith, we're (probably) being presented with a close imitation, but not the genuine article. So what happens if all of this is wrong and there's no overt confirmation? I will be very, very disappointed. But I'm not ready to call it trash unless TFP reveals to us that the surface narrative is what we were supposed to be going with the whole time. That, to me, would signal laziness in the writing on a massive level. And what happens if it's fucky but not gay? Well, let's be clear - you know it, I know it, subtextually this show is already gay as fuck. Keeping it subtextual means that we just get what we've been getting, and quite frankly doing analysis of that subtext has and will continue to bring me joy so I can't imagine stopping. I do queer media analysis as a hobby. That won't be stopping anytime soon. Keeping the status quo would be disappointing, but I'm ready to roll with it. It's what we as a community have had to do for centuries. And yes, that time should be in the past, but if it isn't, then I personally am ready to take what I have and keep moving forward. However, on a gut level, I just trust my intuition about the story I think I'm being told. And I'm trusting Sherlock when he tells me to trust myself. Too much just doesn't add up otherwise. It's already gay.

*Thiruvananthapuram,* earlier known as Trivandrum, is the capital city of Kerala. The name literally splits into " *Tiru","Anantha""puram"* meaning "the town of Lord ANANTHA". This is really true since the temple is at the heart of the town and for generations, the kings have called themselves "Padmanabha-Dasa" or the "servants of LORD Ananthapadmanabha", and ruled the state as the representatives of LORD Anantha-Padmanabha.
The town has a history of supporting fine art and culture. The Kings of Tiruvancore (Thirunals as they are known) have not only promoted art but have themselves been accomplished artists. The most famous of them are Swathi Tirunal who is a well known composer in both Karnatak and Hindustani systems of music, and Raja Ravi Varma the internationally acclaimed painter, well known for inventing paints using natural materials.

Only one side of the Moon is visible from Earth because the Moon rotates on its axis at the same rate that the Moon orbits the Earth – a situation known as synchronous rotation, or tidal locking. The Moon is directly illuminated by the Sun, and the cyclically varying viewing conditions cause the lunar phases.

There are four Vedas:
The Rigveda,
the Yajurveda,
the Samaveda and
the Atharvaveda.
Each Veda has four subdivisions – the Samhitas (mantras and benedictions), the Aranyakas (text on rituals, ceremonies, sacrifices and symbolic-sacrifices), the Brahmanas (commentaries on rituals, ceremonies and sacrifices), and the Upanishads (texts discussing meditation, philosophy and spiritual knowledge). Some scholars add a fifth category – the Upasanas (worship). The texts of the Upanishads discuss ideas akin to the heterodox sramana-traditions.
Vedas are śruti ("what is heard"), distinguishing them from other religious texts, which are called smṛti ("what is remembered").
🤔 *How ........* ⁉
*WORKING PRINCIPLE OF A DVD PLAYER?* 💿📀
The DVD ( Digital Video Disc or Digital Versatile Disc) is a digital optical disc data storage format invented and developed in 1995.
DVD base layer made of a polycarbonate plastic. A thin layer of aluminum coating over the polycarbonate plastic. A clear protective acrylic coating over the aluminum layer.
The pits and bumps in the DVD are hit by the laser from the optical mechanism of the DVD player. This laser will be reflected differently according to the change of pits and bumps. Though the laser hits a single spot, the DVD moves in a circular motion so that the entire area is covered.
Red Laser shines onto a spinning DVD disc, reads the bumps (known as “pits”) in the reflection, converts it to 1s (Shiny) and 0s (Non-Shiny Pit), and the circuitry inside the player converts those 1s and 0s into sound and picture.
These reflected laser beams are then collected by a light sensor (eg. photo-detector) which converts the different signals into a binary code. In short, the optical system helps in converting the data from the DVD into a digital code. The binary signal is then sent to a Digital to Analog converter which will be setup in the PCB (Printed Circuit Board). Thus the corresponding analog signal of the DVD is obtained. The PCB also has amplifiers which amplify the signal and then sends it to the graphic and audio systems of the computer/TV. Thus, the corresponding audio/video signal is obtained.
