Lewis Hamilton will win the title soon, even if it’s not this weekend, and in that context he was asked on Thursday how he felt about his season so far.
“We got to the beginning of the year and people thought we were talking ourselves down and not showing our true performance,” he said. “In actual fact, it was reality. Ferrari had a good car at the beginning. Perhaps it just wasn’t working that great earlier on in the season.
“The biggest challenges are always trying to understand these tyres. Everyone has been on that case each year and there’s quite a different dynamic to them this season. So if you look at qualifying, for example, I think that’s an area which has probably been my weakest, even though I feel like I’ve been doing good laps but they’ve not been as good as others.
“The races have obviously been stronger and continued, I guess, on from last year but been very, very strong this season. But then I guess it’s also just been the balance of everything you’re doing outside of the sport, the obstacles you come across in the build-up to the races and just remaining consistent.
“Punching out these performances each weekend in, weekend out for us guys it’s such a hard task and I think people underestimate and undervalue how hard that is. Perhaps other athletes would understand because they go to competition after competition but it’s really hard because people turn on the TV and see a few hours of our weekend but there’s a massive amount of work that goes on obviously in the background, which you guys will know, obviously and I think it’s really just trying to continue to keep the team motivated, steering them in the right direction – because they can easily go in the wrong direction quite often with these cars nowadays.”
“not proportionate” and “inconsistent”.
But the team will not appeal against the penalty for using a driver-aid system to avoid “investing further time and effort in a sterile debate”.
Renault’s brake-bias adjustment system contravened rules dictating that the car must be driven alone and unaided.
The team said the penalty was “not proportionate to any benefit the drivers derived”.
They added that the decision was “subjective” – but that they were not appealing because they had “no new evidence” to add to the case.

So here we are. Four races to go in this marathon season and it’s coming to crunch time. Lewis Hamilton can win the title this weekend, the sixth of his career, the fifth in the last six years. But will he? It’s not looking that easy – as he pointed out, he has only once this season out-scored team-mate Valtteri Bottas by the amount of points he needs to do so on Sunday to win the title.
And that was when Bottas damaged his front wing on the first lap in Hungary. And then there’s Mercedes’ expectations for this weekend, which are not high, after struggling so badly in Mexico last year. But they’ve defied expectations before, as has Hamilton. So let’s settle in and watch what could be a seminal weekend unwind.

‘Valtteri’s been strong all year’
The man himself though is talking down his chances of clinching the world title this weekend.
Hamilton needs to gain 14 more points than Bottas does on Sunday to win his third successive championship and his fifth in six years.
This is what the Brit said in yesterday’s news conference…

How Hamilton can win the title in Mexico
Win plus fastest lap with Bottas lower than third
Win with Bottas lower than fourth
Second plus fastest lap with Bottas lower than seventh
Second with Bottas lower than seventh
Second with Bottas lower than eighth if Bottas sets fastest lap
Third and fastest lap with Bottas lower than eighth
Third with Bottas lower than ninth

Post update
Hello and welcome along to BBC Sport’s coverage of the Mexican Grand Prix.
Will Hamilton win a sixth world title on Sunday? It seems a matter of when, not if, he becomes a six-time champion.
