i'm so happy you brought back up the topic of rick's shitty writing of anyone even remotely non white / "white passing"
with that being said, do you think the shitty script he gave to annabeth in the show has to do with him just being deeply uninterested in adapting his story to include characters of color? bc it seems like once rick encounters a character that cannot be easily erased all ethnic or racial identity of to fit them into an usamerican specifically white ass narrative, he gets lost.
i just keep thinking how the only thing that "changed" about annabeth as presented in the show was her race but her plot relevance and her characterization got downgraded severely. meanwhile percy, whiter than before (wheres the mediterranean god look......................................), got half her functions. like i just look at rick in context and i wonder if he just gives so little fuck about characters of color he cant even write a decent character arc for an adaptation of a very established persona
thoughts? thank u!
I wouldn't be surprised if it's Rick (and the writer's room, since it actually seems Rick isn't all that heavily involved if much at all with the script itself based on some interviews) just has internal biases that he refuses to reflect on. It would be a consistent trend with the uptick in offensive writing in the books themselves (see: the troglodytes in general, all the Jewish kids in CHB being in Hermes cabin, etc etc). Rick seems to want to engage with these topics but refuses to actually assess how he's approaching it and his own biases while also overemphasizing his engagement with the topics. It's a kind of big talk/words vs actions type thing to me.
[this got a wee bit long so throwing it under a cut]
I was having a couple of conversations about this topic recently - one being group reading/discussion of WottG and how, allegedly, the slightly different characterizations in that book are inspired by the actors in the show. Annabeth is repeatedly and frequently described as motherly and maternal in the book, plus some other misc characterizations that make you tilt your head and go "Wait, what about Leah made you want to write Annabeth this way?" and concerns about it leaning into stereotypes. (It's also strange, because in the show Sally is MUCH more aggressive and less maternal, and this is painted like it's supposed to be a girlboss thing cause her being too soft and motherly was too weak or something? But now book Annabeth is now being described as all soft and maternal??? What. What is happening.)
Another conversation that i had with my therapist (cause we talk about pjo a lot lol) and later repeated and discussed more with other folks on discord more specifically regarding the show was a lot of discussion about the casting. Particularly casting choices and how the writing either is refusing to take casting into consideration to respectfully approach how things would be changed to avoid problems or are actively changing the script for characters in a way that is potentially if not downright offensive. Clarisse is the number one example i bring up because a lot of people say that the reason a plus sized actress wasn't cast for her was to avoid the "fat bully" trope. The thing is, there is ALSO a POC bully trope that is just as bad if not worse, so if they were actually taking offensive tropes into consideration one would expect them to avoid that too (especially since Percy was cast as a pasty white boy - which just makes it all look worse)? (Also other plus-sized characters like Dionysus and Gabe were also cast as skinny, same with Tyson. So it just seems like they don't want to cast plus-sized actors either.)
But also they're rewriting stuff that actively puts the casting decisions into worse tropes. Like hey, why is Percy (a white guy) the one who knows the "real" versions of all these myths and is expositioning them to Annabeth (a black girl), who in the books is supposed to know more than him? Why does he know better than her for some reason and have to guide her? Why is Percy teaching Annabeth about pop culture and how to be a kid? Not to mention stuff like the show constantly encouraging the viewer to doubt or distrust characters like Grover and Clarisse and Annabeth as red herrings as to who the traitor is. Plus there's no adjustments to stuff from the books like Annabeth initially being somewhat aggressive/antagonistic towards Percy, or Clarisse's aggression and bullying towards Percy to try and circumvent those being bad tropes in the contexts of the casting.
And there's an ongoing trend of characters who are antagonistic towards Percy in the books being divided into two groups: those who continue to be antagonistic towards Percy in the show, or those who are tweaked to suddenly become kinda silly-goofy and significantly less threatening. Gabe, Dionysus, Ares, and Hades are all examples of characters that should be antagonistic towards Percy but are softened SIGNIFICANTLY and played for laughs in the show. Echidna is played as a twist antagonist because she initially because she approaches the kids as very sweet and helpful. And they're all cast as white! Meanwhile other characters like Clarisse, Luke, Zeus, etc, are still antagonistic towards Percy (plus also like Annabeth initially and again, Grover being painted as a major red herring). Plus some new additions like Hermes, Mr. Lin Manuel Miranda himself, being wholly introduced into the plot when he's not supposed to appear until book 2, and all he does is sabotage the quest. Like, it's weird! That's a weird writing decision!!!! I get wanting to get that sweet sweet LMM cameo money, but, why is Hermes an antagonist here???????? he's not even supposed to be here yet!.
We also have stuff like Poseidon (who, like many of the god/major kid pairings so far seems to have been cast to match each other appearance-wise) saving the day for Percy and being this weirdly good dad, versus the books where we get the iconic "I am sorry you were born" line and Percy and Poseidon's tension is part of their arcs. Notably, Poseidon does this by ceding to Zeus, who is actively about to start a war. While Gabe is rewritten to be a total loser, Sally is MUCH more aggressive and her yelling and screaming at young Percy is supposed to be sympathetic for some reason? If Gabe were acting like Sally does in the show, he would actually be significantly more like his book counterpart! The show is making active decisions to paint these characters the way they do!
Admittedly, part of it may just be they got overzealous with their casting (not inherently a bad thing! diverse casting is good!) and then proceeded to not consider how that casting affects the way the characters are perceived. It also doesn't bode well for certain guesses we can make going further into the show - Thalia is very at odds with Percy initially. She's a very aggressive character. They fight a lot! Also Annabeth's description already implies that they're tweaking Thalia's character to be more "tough love" versus the books where she's significantly more of a bleeding heart when she first meets Annabeth. Like, I'm very happy about Thalia's casting, her actress seems amazing, but also I'm VERY concerned with how they're going to approach her character to make sure it doesn't end up wildly offensive. Athena is similar - we can guess based on casting decisions so far that they're going to try and cast Athena as similar in appearance to Annabeth/Leah. The show has already painted Athena has antagonistic and uncaring towards her daughter. If projected trends continue, these things are not gonna be great.
And the show does seem to rarely want to engage with these topics - like the scene with the cop in the train. You can tell what they wanted to address by having Annabeth be the one to confront him. The thing is they were too cowardly to actually have that conversation! They paint the kids as being unreasonable and getting unnecessarily upset when they aren't directly being accused of destroying a room, therein painting the cop as the one in the right in that situation. The implication seems to be a little bit they were going for "Oh, this is Annabeth's hubris getting them into trouble" but. that's such a bad way to do it! That's like the worst way you could have done it! (This is also a trend in books from HoO onwards, more or less - Rick tries to engage with certain topics, often using characters of specific demographics, and then proceeds to do a really bad job of it.)
There are also some aspects that are just like - in the books, Luke being a middle-class blond-haired blue-eyed pretty white boy is relevant! Because the fact that he has privilege from that particularly in how he's perceived is part of how he came to where he is and why he acts the way he does. Percy not having those same privileges, and having aspects like constantly inherently being labeled as a trouble-maker just based on his atypical (neurodivergent) behavior and coming from a lower socioeconomical background play heavily into his character!!! Percy being both a poor and disabled kid (and implied potentially POC) plays DIRECTLY into why he feels so strongly about standing up for other disenfranchised kids (in SoM, explicitly including other disabled kids and kids of color). It directly relates to his experiences and standing up for kids who are like him because he didn't have that, versus Luke whose perceptions and goals are very self-oriented. Now, in the show, we've essentially swapped Percy and Luke's appearances, and that paints a very different narrative. And that's important to acknowledge!

"the neoliberal rhetoric of the pronoun (ESPECIALLY in english) as the ultimate form of advocacy" -- it's such a relief to hear your take on ava's thoughts on pronouns bc i've always been frustrated by how limiting they are? how much stress they cause? i know pronouns are important for some folks but also we're so much more than that...
whew like ok i work in dei, mostly for youth (sport, schools, etc) but also doing lgbtq 101 workshops for upper level execs who run big sports orgs, school districts, blah blah, & it's like... people really think that getting someone's pronouns right (or even trying to get someone's pronouns right) is like........ you have done it! u are not transphobic! u understand the nuances of everyone's gender if you use the right pronoun!
& like... i get paid a fair amount of money to lowkey sell out & explain what a pronoun is (lol) but at the same time it is the fucking bane of my existence. i personally hate pronouns. i think they are legitimately so stupid lol. like... to distill the vast nuanced experience of both having a gender identity AND being perceived at all times as a gendered being (which sometimes match & sometimes don't) into a PRONOUN is just baffling to me.
i think cis people (especially those who don't really want to do the work needed to understand what abolition means -- how queerness & especially gender expansive trans identities are a crucial part of the intersection of where that ethic is rooted) just see pronouns as a sort of easy way out. like you're cool with trans people if you can remember someone's they/them pronouns. it's so gross & so deeply tried up in representational politics (diverse oppressors are still oppressors, white supremacy can be present in ethic & politic even without a white person in the room, etc).
& of course like you said pronouns are definitely important to some people (it is always nice to feel seen & respected at the most basic level 🤪) & definitely not at all saying that anyone should like get people's pronouns wrong, obviously, but i just really hate the concept of how my entire experience as a dyke & a person in general has to be reflected to the world at all times in a silly word which is so vastly incomplete. & i genuinely (not anyone's fault!) hate how that can get tied up in my writing, especially my writing about queerness. when ppl rly care abt terms & IDs etc i can understand bc the common messaging is all rooted in neoliberalism & "representation" instead of anti-state resistance, etc, so it's like. okay lol. but i am intentional in the way i write queerness bc of my own ethic & politic, so you know
ANYWAY yes. queerness & transness is so deeply expansive, to make it only about (or mostly about) pronouns is, to me, ethically against what queerness & transness really is, especially if those pronouns are mostly talked about in the context of english. & i would be remiss in saying that using non-normative &/or neopronouns is a privilege rooted in safety. often i don't disclose they/them pronouns bc i just don't want to explain myself, & i deeply do not care, but i'm always protected in a lot of ways by my whiteness (& that i'm educated, able-bodied, cis-passing, employed, etc etc etc). for a lot of people, for a lot of reasons, pronouns aren't safe. being out as trans isn't safe. but that doesn't mean their gender identities are any different or less important or less vital.
so yah ur right sorry this is a rant lmfao & once & for all.... ava is the most anti-state anti-institution character lmao. she genuinely would not give a flying fuck about her own pronouns. god doesn't fit into a pronoun anyway :)

Really long Twisted Wonderland idea post.
Yuu gets to pet any and all creatures, the post. Gimme a kiss if you like it *does a kickflip on Cater's skateboard*
Tumblr media
* @ that person who wrote a post about Crowley calling Yuu a beast tamer, and Yuu being cool with Beastmen because of that title. I wanna tag you, but I kinda forgot who it was n' now I can't find it, someone tell me :( I'm expanding on that idea <3
* Malleus and Grim are the beginnings of Yuu's innate ability to attract any and all creatures. The bats that follow Lilia, Silver's forest friends, the Equestrian club horses, Lucius, Beastmen, fae, mermen, and whatever else... will just find themselves getting closer to Yuu. Whether they notice it or not.
* Ramshackle has officially been taken over by the sheer amount of living beings raiding the place every week. Yuu's beast tamer aura is similar to Silver's D*sney Princess animal abilities, except ten times worse, and they can't stop finding a new nest and/or burrow of some random animal family.
* The Ghost trio living there have basically become the housekeepers and have to constant kick out critters and students before they end up cramming up the dorm. That, or breaking the rickety old floorboards from the amount of them.
* Not everyday you get to have some time to touch any new animal (or person), so Yuu went along with it. Come to the Ramshackle dorm if you want pettings AND a free therapy session. All profits go to the Ramshackle dorm. (And Grim's premium tuna bill!)
* Grim doesn't enjoy this. His henchmen is practically a zookeeper at this point, and if Grim isn't your number one priority among these BEASTS then that's just blasphemy. Remember. He can be your angle, or yuor devil 😈
+ Dire Crowley is also here. Crowley gets to sit in the corner and drink from a cup of apple juice like a drinky bird. Drink well, sweet headmaster (derogatory AND affectionate <3)
* This whole next part is just Yuu being a total numbnut in other dorms lmao... Gets kinda long for a quick shitpost...
* Heartslabyul probably owes Yuu a ton of favours tbh. Ace and Deuce think doing their chores are a drag, so... Why not get the infamous Ramshackle Prefect to go take care of the animals today? They can enjoy being covered in a pile of hedgehogs and flamingos! Cue Riddle finding out (Cater. Cute animals + Bestie prefect. Magicam.) and scolding Adeuce for dumping their duties on someone else. At the very least, they're usually paid back with some kind of sweet treat from Trey. Maybe a flash of a purple cat's smile too.
* Savanaclaw? Yuu calls it the petting zoo, babey. Call it luck, but Yuu gets to be besties with Savanaclaw boys after they come in petting them and telling them they did a good job— Post Chapter 2. Is it their aura? The way they calm their rowdy style? None of the beastmen know, but they do know that Yuu is a very nice magicless human to hang with. Leona is still the boss around the dorm. No one gets a "Good boy!" or headpats if Leona is around. Sure, Leona kicks them out before they spoil the boys, but... who says Leona isn't 100% hogging the good feels at Ramshackle? Ruggie comes along too. Jack would too, but this is Jack Howl we're talking about lol. (He defo acts likes it's an inconvenience, but everyone knows better 😔)
* Octavinelle— Floyd would deadass keep Yuu trapped in a hug as soon as they take a step into Mostro Lounge. Jade has the knowledge not to trap them in front of everyone, but he's dragging them into the VIP room to do the same as his twin. Yuu is not immune to a happy Leech twin snuggle sammy. May they be blessed with infinite mushrooms and an ungodly amount of shrimp dishes. Azul will, undeniably, take advantage of Yuu's strange aura and use them as a marketing tool to gain more customers. Points for diversity, he says.
* Scarabia also owes Yuu some favours, but they're payed back almost instantaneously. Kalim definitely invites the Ramshackle duo to hang out with animals and have a feast every week. Jamil might be having a heart attack from seeing TWO reckless morons cuddling a tiger, but that is his own problem. Bonus if Silver joins the party, cause that means Kalim gets TWO besties to chill with animals. (Maybe you could calm Jamil by tempting him with a parrot? Or a viper if you're feeling silly)
* Banned from Pomefiore lmao. Vil admires your capabilities, but that doesn't mean you're allowed to walk around like a fur magnet into his dorm. Rook would go to Ramshackle to fawn over the many critters (And possibly bother Leona and Ruggie if they're nearby) although he usually ends up terrifying everyone there. Don't tell Epel, but everyone takes pictures of him when little birds land on his head whenever he comes over for a study session at Ramshackle. Yuu never says anything because the birds know they have an album of "Cute friends and cute creatures" on their phone.
* Ignihyde is crying, my guy. Why does Yuu always waltz in with strangers and wild animals in tow??? Idia, however, is also taking advantage of Yuu's passive skill of beast tamer! Technically, if Idia ranks up his friendship with Yuu, shouldn't that mean his rate of pulling a few cats and dogs go up? The pros of dealing with one person to get his furry euphoria versus the cons of social interaction and social anxiety... He's in a dilemma, but Ortho is happy. Big brother is trying to get a friend! Uh, somewhat.
* Diasomnia has a bad case of bird nests tucked in every corner of the dorm. Both Silver and Yuu are the cause of this, but how could Lilia scold them? His son and the prefect look very peaceful as they hand feed little woodland critters together. Sebek interrupts this, of course. Will Yuu pet the half-fae lad to calm him, and will it work? Depends on if you think being half-fae counts. Malleus is one happy dragon faerie though! That's all that matters. Him and his super cool other-wordly, technically alien, human best friend have chats over tea, and Sebek can't do a single thing about it. (Added note: Lilia includes soft vampire papa hugs if you'd like that)
+ Ramshackle extra. Yuu buried in a pile of their first-year friends. Just buddies in a cuddle pile with sweet baby Grim in the middle. That's it. There's nothing else other than love and peace in the pile 😎 I just wanted that in your mind.

Hello the Gia! We're a brand new skeleton RP based on Blade Runner 2049. Could we receive an opinion from you, please? Thank you very much and happy New Years!
hi! happy new year! keep in mind that my opinion is simply that...my opinion & everything i say is meant to be constructive and helpful! (also please note that i’m not familiar with blade runner/have never seen it, so i’m also not your target audience).
first impressions. your icon threw me off ‘cause it looks like the old tumblr anon icon haha. in general, i was pretty confused by probably someone who is a fan of blade runner would know exactly what was going on immediately. i didn’t so definitely make sure your icon and url read blade runner to someone who is a fan of the series.
plot. again, i’m not super familiar with the plot, but it seems just like you’ve set the group in the blade runner 2049 setting, which is cool, and everything else is character-driven within that verse. if i was familiar with the series i would definitely try to suggest some twists to you, but for now i think the concept works especially because as far as i know, there are no other blade runner roleplays in the tags right now, especially of this kind. because of that, your plot is unique and though your target group of roleplayers may be niche, you’ll get them all!
characters (if applicable). just so you know the “roles” link on your main navigation is broken. luckily, you don’t have many posts so it’s easy for me to find all your characters right now. so far, all your skeletons are nice -- basic, but provide a decent amount of information. i think that’s essential for a plot like yours that takes place in a specific verse and it’s great that you allow OCs. i would definitely suggest having non-binary skeletons as well as male and female. it’s great that you included tom hardy and you definitely shouldn’t shy away from that kind of age range diversity. the “audition” link is also currently broken, so i can’t see your app right now either. i am definitely curious as to whether you allow people to play canon characters.
graphics and theme. they’re okay -- i like the font and the theme you used is really clean and nice. a lot of the things on the theme are unfinished, like broken links and some things on the sidebar. i like your choice to sign posts with the font signature text. i do think there’s a lot more you could do to make this interesting though, since looking up the movie i’ve noticed the vibe of the world is extremely colorful, interesting, and futuristic, where your graphics are very dark and give me a sort of wasteland vibe? some of the graphics you are using are bright purple too, and you can tell they’re sort of cut from the same vein, but there’s clashing vibes. i would definitely suggest committing to a color scheme, but in general, i think it looks clean!
other stuff. i'm glad to see a niche like this being tapped on and i think anyone interested in the blade runner series would definitely be into what you’ve thought out -- it seems like you’ve got a lot of cool ideas. i would suggest cleaning up broken links on the main before opening & maybe making the tagline over the ask box a little shorter ‘cause the fact that the text takes up two lines and blends into each other looks clunky idk. best of luck!!
