well that sure was a thing that I watched.
would I recommend it? Errrr.... I mean, sure, if you already hate Scott or would like to? I did like the Amundsen side of things very much, but I know far less about the actual history and sources there so I don't know if they were playing as fast and loose with that as with Scott's side. I do think the show has interesting things to say about legacy and truth in narrative, it's just unfortunate that I.... don't agree with some of its basic narrative choices
I will say, I thought the sets and costuming were fantastic, with so much attention given to recreating details from the expedition photos (special mention to birdie bowers' stylish hat). And look, I'm not Norwegian, but I did appreciate the show's commitment to casting Norwegians (or at least, Scandinavians who could speak Norwegian - I think a couple of the actors were Swedish) so that I didn't have to sit through dodgy RADA-trained accent attempts, and that the bits set in Norway were in fact filmed in Norway and felt like Norway. I mentioned in a previous post too how much I like a nice tall ship and on-location filming. The production quality in general? Fantastic 👌
things I will not forgive include:
Excising the winter journey. I understand that that's a whole miniseries in and of itself, but it's also prime evidence for the claim that this is a scientific survey and not just a race for the pole, and people who don't loathe Scott generally agree that he was legit excited about the scientific angle. There are perfectly sound budgetary reasons to cut it, but I don't like how its loss contributes to this image of Scott as only interested in the pole and not even good at that. Also I want penguins. Also I want Cherry to appear onscreen for more than two scenes.
The death of Edgar Evans. Yeah you can argue that the emphasis on his natural death under peaceful vigil by his companions, as recorded in the journals, is somewhat convenient, but it is certainly a statement to go No That Didn't Happen.
The final tent. Not including 'To my widow' or 'for God's sake, look after our people'. The fact that Scott is shown clutching his journal (and legacy), rather than having stowed that neatly and then reaching for Wilson, as the eyewitness record relates
Finally, look, I am not a Scott apologist, I have not read his diaries or letters in full, but the excerpts I have don't leave me particularly misty-eyed over his personality. but when multiple people talk repeatedly about his extraordinary personal charm, it might be nice to see some of that occasionally? Give me some indication of why people from Discovery were willing to go back to the frozen wastes with this guy. Why Wilson wrote that 'it would be an honour to drop down any crevasse in the world with him'. Something, please, for the love of god

Whenever I get down that, in book canon, 99% of anything having to do with Devil's Minion is a single chapter in a series of 13 books, I remember the following quote:
"To my wife, a chapter can be a book."

In case y'all need a sign that fucked up fiction is okay, I was talking to my neuropsychologist about my writing.
Me: Now I know why I write such fucked up shit. My neuropsychologist: Get me a signed copy.

Jude Law: "He's complicated, but not bad."
Me, after reading the latest episode transcript, reading the social media reactions, and wondering where the complications went:

last political post of the year cause I'm tried but also just gotta vent-
I think all governments are oppressive to some degree to the poor, working class, disabled, women, and LGBTQ+ communities they preside over. I think there are women in South America who are just as concerned about getting proper health care in scary situations as I am. I think there are working class people in China who are just as concerned with how much it costs to heat their home as I am. I think there are people in Eastern Europe who pinch pennies where they can on their grocery bill just like I do. There are people all over the world concerned with how people in their countries, and worldwide, are being treated.
There isn't much we can do to help each other. But there are small things. And I think, most of all, listening, realizing we're not all alone and having the same experiences, is most important.
I have more in common with any working class person anywhere in the world than I do with any politician. Even in my own country.

You of course don't have to answer but why are you not watching love in the big city? Is there a particular reason?

I don't know when, precisely, I began to ship Miranda and Jack, because objectively speaking the only interactions between them that I've seen are, um, bad, but I do remember thinking about their post-loyalty confrontation a few days after it happened and going "Was that a lil bit homoerotic or was that just me?" and I think I was right for that.
It's not that I don't buy these two not liking each other - they have plenty of reason to, specially on Jack's end - but Bioware, being Bioware, was clearly not interested in actually, you know... developing that in any way, so it's in my hands and now they start out hating each other's guts, then they establish baseline trust in each other by fighting together, they learn about each other's pasts and realize they have a load of trauma in common and then they girlfriend.

THE ONLY SECONDS THAT MATTER
EPILOGUE IS UP!
Genre: Contemporary Romance Rating: 18+
Includes: Extensive horse nerdery + cowboys, mxm romance (1 trans + 1 cis), some discussion child abuse, some instances of trans/homophobia (it is rural Oklahoma, y'all), depression, occasional sex scene (but it’s a slow burn for sure)
Victor Ortiz-Bennett had some reservations about moving to Oklahoma, but his late aunt willed him a 70-acre horse farm, and he decides to fulfill his dream of running and operating his own training facility. Victor’s been around the reining horse show circuit for a while, and he’s ready to settle down, travel less, and spend more time with the horses he loves and away from the people he can do without. That is, until he picks up a horse at an auction with a bucking problem he can’t fix, and he has to take her to the one guy who can ride anything– Johnny Stearns, a retired professional rodeo rider.
Johnny Stearns is loud, chatty, eccentric, and fears nothing, exactly Victor’s opposite. However, Victor finds himself sinking into an odd friendship with this new foul-mouthed cowboy without a filter, diving deeper into the mess that is Johnny’s life until there’s no way to extract himself from it. Johnny may talk a tough game, but there’s more to him than he’ll let most people see. Victor knows getting in too deep will mean a rough ride, but if there’s anything Johnny’s taught him, it’s how to stay in the saddle.
Excerpt:
Johnny’s expression turned sad. “Maybe. I don’t know. I was really out of control.” He huffed in exasperation. “Don’t wanna spend much time worryin’ about it now. I think you’re worryin’ about everything enough for the both of us.”
“No kidding.” Victor pulled the marshmallow away from the fire, blew on it for a second, then tried to bite it off the stick. It ended up smeared all across his face, and Johnny laughed as Victor attempted to wipe it off. To Victor’s surprise, Johnny grabbed his face and wrapped his lips around the tip of Victor’s nose, licking it clean.
“Very weird, but thank you,” Victor said with a laugh.
“Oh, I’ll eat your ass but lickin’ your nose is too weird for ya?”
Now Victor laughed harder. “Well, when you put it that way…”
Johnny grabbed a fistful of Victor’s shirt and yanked him into a kiss. Victor hadn’t predicted it, but he didn’t fight the contact. He wrapped his arms around Johnny’s neck, returning the kiss knowing they had the luxury of time. It went on longer than it usually did without escalating. Typically Johnny was pawing at his belt by now, but instead of growing more intense, he softened until the kiss naturally ended.
“What was that for?” Victor asked with a smile.
“Needed to buy myself a little time to do this,” Johnny said, pulling further back until Victor’s gaze was pulled away from his and toward his hands. In them, he held a little black box, and in that was a gold ring.
“You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me,” Victor blurted. “Is this a joke?”
“Figure I should make an honest man of you after knockin’ ya up,” Johnny joked, though his mouth kept twitching like it couldn’t decide between a smile or something else. “Wanna get married?”
