Why is League of Legends still so popular even after 15 years?
Hi everyone! So I’ve just been thinking about the days when I️ would pull up League in the middle of class and just play because we could use our Macbooks to do work😂. I️ need to praise Riot for that like they really made a MOBA game that can run on a laptop that isn’t meant for gaming at all. Not only that, but it’s totally free to play. The only things you need to buy are the skin cosmetics but those don’t boost the characters’ (or “champions”) skills.
I’ve always been very impressed with how Riot Games handled the business side of their games/platform. A video called “League of Legends Should Be Dead By Now” by GoingIndie does an amazing job explaining why League chose to be free to all users and explains their understanding of the “Loss Leader” business strategy.
What GoingIndie kind of mentioned but didn’t dive too deep into was how Riot didn’t just stick to updating and enhancing their games, but they also branched out to other industries and fanbases. My favorite example is K/DA of course! The K/DA MV connected the Kpop, Gaming, and even the Anime community together. Thanks to this skin line, Riot Games has tapped into an audience bigger than the League fan base. It’s hard to imagine that this virtual group was originally created just to promote Worlds, an annual Esports competition☠️.
They even made their own TV series, Arcane, featuring a story between two popular characters’ lores. This series is coming out with a second season and I even have friends who are so excited about it but they won’t ever touch League itself haha. So my answer to why this game can remain relevant despite being out for 15 years is how they’ve built their brand around the game.
While the main objective of League is to destroy the opponent's base, the developers have created a unique world with rich lore and diverse characters, attracting a large number of fans who don't even play the game. Overall, Riot Games has done a remarkable job in maintaining the interest of its player base by creating an engaging experience that goes beyond just the game itself :) I️ will always be a big fan even though I️ barely play anymore😂
But I️’m curious to hear other fans’ thoughts on this! I’m no pro player (barely scratched Silver) and just enjoy the game casually so I am curious to hear from other players. I️ want to know if you agree with my two examples or if you think there’s a bigger reason for their success. Feel free to comment on anything!

Two permanent gamemodes is a joke, I have seen and played other mobas that have 7 of 8 gamemodes. Like dominion or a 3v3, 5v5v5, a Team of two surviving and fighting other teams, heck even Solo adventure mode. Tenset, the very company that owns riot, has made another moba that has more gamemodes, 3v3, Double teams, a map were the teams are seperated and have to use hooks like blitzcranks to yank the enemy to them. Riot has said that bringing older maps back and making them up to date takes recources, recources they have. Remember riot is not an indie Studio, riot is a multi BILLION company, they can do it. They said that they removed dominion and twisted treeline because players didn't play them as much a summoners rift, which if you think about it is no suprise. Riot did not give the two modes the same love, dominion stopped reciving Updates 2012 and twisted treelines Last Update was 2015, while summonors rift is constanly getting updated, with map changing with the elements and it get's all the love. Nexus blitz should also be permanent, the map looks amaizing, it obviosly works and makes players have fun. Twisted Treeline was a lot less stressfull and fun, I mostly play versus bots because the normal rift is just so stressfull and I can't deal with it, Twisted Treeline was the ONLY gamemode I was comtanble playing normal, Aram can only do so much and I want to chose what champion I play. ( and I never got to dance with Vilemaw). And there just isn't much content, you can by a battle pass but it only gives a few prizes and riot just gives ( amaizing) skins, that is not enough for game like league of legends. There needs to be more, it just makes riot seem that they just don't care.
I definitely think it’s clear Riot’s setting their eyes elsewhere, it’s all about that cash cash money. Many people have pointed that they focus too much on pro players even though they literally make up less than 1% of the entire player base (I’ve yet to make my own stance but it definitely seems the case) and frankly, that’s where the majority of the money and publicity is at so they’ve got to keep to up. If the pros aren’t going to be playing unique maps, then maybe they don’t see the point in releasing them
Wild Rift is already getting unique, exclusive skins so I think that’s another sign that Wild Rift is just being made to almost replace League even if it’s not the same platform. It makes sense I guess, almost everyone has a phone these days. They also have The Ruined King to develop and churn out so there’s that
You could also say they have Valorant to update and maintain but I don’t know how Riot’s structured and surely they have separate development teams for all the games but it’s possible that League’s PC team is shrinking. It could be that they’ve realised that they’re now dominating the PC Moba industry, they gotta take over the rest (FPS games with Valorant and mobile MOBAs with Wild Rift), and only releasing just enough PC content to keep people around

Top 10 Indie Games of the Decade (10 - 6)
Boy oh boy, video games sure did happen this decade, huh? A lot of stuff with a whole lot of video games and, most importantly, the independent game scene became far more pronounced, previously just confined to PC, the increasing presence of the online marketplace on consoles has greatly expanded the scope to which indie games reach players, putting these games on the same level as AAA. Anyway this is 10 of this games that I liked this year.
An honorable mention goes out to Firewatch because I still don’t know what is Firewatch.
10. Stacking
Double Fine are undoubtedly my favorite game company. Tim Schaefer’s company has not only created my favorite game of all time (Psychonauts), but all their games have such a fun creativity to them. Whether its a turn-based RPG where children fight based on their Halloween costumes or an action/strategy game set in a world based on hard rock and metal, Double Fine have proven to be such a company that embraces fun and whimsy, that Sesame Street of all people let them develop their most recent game.
Stacking, as you can tell from the screenshot, is a world populated by matroyshka stacking dolls, and you play as Charlie Blackmore, the smallest of all the stacking dolls, who sets out on an adventure to stop an evil Industrial Age baron called The Baron, who has enslaved his siblings. To do that, he stacks into other dolls, only able to go up in size one at a time. Most characters have their own unique abilities and Charlie uses those abilities to solve adventure game puzzles. And that’s where Stacking gets really cool.
Every single puzzle in the game has multiple solutions, if you can’t figure out one version of how to do it, there’s usually two more solutions. While you only HAVE to do one, the puzzles reset once you finish them, letting you take your time trying to figure the others. Its an adventure game that forgoes classic tropes of that genre, also replacing your standard point and click with the quick to pick up stacking mechanic that lets you pick and choose how you want to do things. Its a game that combines interesting ideas with an anticapitalist story and visually is both early 1900s set design while those sets are comprised of everyday household items. Its like playing a diorama from 1915. Not a lot of games are like that.
9. The Stanley Parable
The story of The Stanley Parable is simple. A narrative-driven walking simulator, you control Stanley, a boring office drone that’s tasked with monitoring data on a computer, pressing buttons and not asking questions. One day, that monitor goes blank and Stanley goes to fix it, suddenly discovering the office he works in is completely empty.
But that’s not the real story of The Stanley Parable. The narrator that describes Stanley’s actions, storybook-style, doesn’t control Stanley’s narrative. You do. And you have every opportunity, every step of the story, to go against the grain of what you’re told happens.
The Stanley Parable is a game that, as soon as you do anything it doesn’t want you to, begs you to continue following the path laid out for you then berates you for not following that path then continues to just complain to you, trying to regain control of the story. Every variation of Stanley’s story is maybe 10 - 15 minutes long but each one is a fun and weird surprise and Kevan Brighting’s soft friendly British narrator is an all time great voice acting role. One so good, Valve’s DOTA 2 MOBA game features an announcer pack that fully replaces the game’s announcer with Brighting’s narrator. DIGITAL SPORTS.
8. Observer
A digital plague called a nanophage has infected and claimed the lives of countless augmented people in this cyberpunk hellscape of Krakow, leading to war and rampant drug use. The Chiron Corporation stepped in soon after and took control, turning Poland into even more of a nightmare than it had been, condemning those on the lower rung of society to poorly kept together tenement buildings, while also creating a police force known as Observers, detectives given free reign to hack the minds of citizens. Its 2084 and you are Daniel Lazarski, an Observer who receives a message from his estranged son Adam to come to a tenement, where he discovers Adam’s body, dead from long before the call was made. And that’s when things get weird.
The more I think about it, the more I think Bloober Team’s more recent horror game, Layers of Fear 2, should take the place on the list. The only issue is I only played Layers 2 a month ago and, no matter how much I love it, my first exposure to this company was through Observer, and more than that, this was a game I did not stop thinking about for like a year and a half. While Layers 2 plays with color and black & white in a game about the early days of film, Observer is clearly influenced by classic works of cyberpunk (the most obvious being Blade Runner), the bright neon buzzing endlessly in this dark, miserable nightmare.
Even the real stars of this game, the minds of the dead you dive into as you solve this murder mystery, embrace that look as your setting is warped around you constantly. Rooms that look normal start stretching endlessly, doors open into other memories. And as Dan gets deeper into the mystery, the line between the real of the world around him and the memories of those he’s probing begin to blend until his own memories get mixed up among them, showing what lead to the current sad life he lives. Its a game that oozes misery even as it tries to jumpscare you around every corner. And its why it still keeps showing up in my thoughts.
7. Gone Home
What exactly is a walking simulator? Dumb, that’s what. The idea that a game isn’t a game simply because it follows more of an adventure game aesthetic without any real challenges is absurd and, frankly, a childish view of what a game can be. And no game broke gamers’ brains more than the “walking simulator” Gone Home.
In 1995, Katie Greenbriar returns from a trip overseas on a stormy night to find her family home completely abandoned, moving boxes still unpacked. The unnerving quiet of the house mixed with the constant rain and occasional thunder feels like something out of a Resident Evil game. But instead of horror, the game uses this to make you feel confused, something to make you want to solve what happened. And it turns out its not a horror story, but a love story.
As Katie progresses through her house, she finds plenty of objects she can interact with, many that often unlock other areas in this large rural Oregon home. Along with many of those unlockables comes narration from Katie’s sister Sam, who details the awkwardness of moving into this new house, frequently thought to be haunted, and her life in a new school where she can’t connect with too many other people. Until she meets Lonnie. The two young women bond and fall in love. And the more you explore the home, the more this story gets fleshed out. Gone Home is a pure delight of a video game and one that not only spawned the pejorative term of “walking simulator” but became a gold standard for them, a term that the gaming industry has since embraced. There is no shame in using interactive media to simply tell a story, and Gone Home knows it.
6. Jazzpunk
Its the late 1950s in the country of Japanada and Agent Polyblank must- I’m going to be honest with you guys. I don’t know what Jazzpunk is. I’m not entirely sure what its about. I’ve played it multiple times and loved every moment of it but I’m not going to pretend its a game that makes any sense. And that’s just what it wants to be.
Heavily adopting the style of mid-century spy and cyberpunk fiction, Jazzpunk is a game that overly prefers making you laugh over any qualitative form of actual gameplay. Sure there are puzzles to solve to move the story along, but those puzzles task you with collecting giant spiders that are better rendered than anything else in this game, or hacking into a Soviet consulate which involves using a telephone to dial “Kremlin 2: The New Batch”.
And the puzzles that make up the story stuff isn’t even 1/5th of the general dumb garbage you can do in this game. Jazzpunk exists for gags like the wedding cake that opens into a console that lets you play the multiplayer wedding-based FPS Wedding Qake. Jazzpunk exists to make you help a woman swat down flies in her store of very expensive vases. Jazzpunk will make you suddenly stop what you’re doing to do a first person version of the car bonus stage from Street Fighter 2, or suddenly put you into a cyberpunk heist in a Blade Runner-like city.
Jazzpunk is Saul Bass on laughing gas. An intentionally stupid and disorienting experience purely designed to have you explore every inch of this weird world just so you can dig up weird crap on the beach with a metal detector and experience a pizza-themed Evil Dead 2 parody. Jazzpunk exists to be Jazzpunk. And in a lot of ways, it fully lives up to its nonsense name. Its a game of subversion in a way so impossibly dumb that it entirely feels improvised. That’s Jazzpunk.

Best Video Games of the last decade
The last decade was sensational, a lot of stuff happened, there were dramatic changes all across, especially in videogames. Technological advancements in computer hardware pushed graphical limits and the visual fidelity in gaming kept evolving. Games got more immersive and believable.
The videogame industry saw major changes like the rise of digital gaming platforms such as Steam, Origin, Epic Games Store and so on.
Even the Consoles saw dramatic changes. The PS4 was a major player in the market but Steam on the other hand dominated the PC landscape. Epic Games Store also got a lot of attention.
Even VR stepped out of the shadows and major companies like Microsoft, Google, HTC, Samsung, Facebook and many others discovered the potential of the medium and embarked on the ultimate quest of making the best VR headset in the market. Even Sony made a VR headset for the PS4.
Technological advancements are fine but it is important for us to understand that Videogames cannot just solely depend on technology to be an immersive and unforgettable experience.
They have to have an engaging story, solid and balanced game play mechanics, immersive sound design, perfect balance between narrative and pacing and a few other major factors are what determine a good game and a great game. Ultimately they have to deliver an unforgettable experience.
So after all the trials and tribulations, a few games have emerged to show the world how powerful the medium can be.
So without any further ado, lets jump into the list of best games of the last decade.
Read Dead Redemption 2
The critically acclaimed open world wild west adventure game comes straight from Rockstar Games, the same team that has made the GTA Series. RDR2 is considered as one of the most successful titles of the last decade as it gives you a vast sprawling open world with staggering amount of detail. This is one of the most detailed games of the decade, coming somewhere close the end of the current generation of consoles; it utilizes the fullest potential of modern day hardware and delivers a stunning dynamic open world experience like never before.
CS:GO
Yes, you might be wondering why is CS:GO on this list, well it is there for a good reason. Not only this online classic tactical shooter still among the largest and most played games of all time, it is fun to play even in this age and day. CS:GO manages to bring back an old formula and still keeps it relevant at this age. Countless events and tournaments are centered around CS:GO. Back in the day CS was mod out of another legendary game which we will definitely discuss some day. CS single handedly showed the world what mods are capable of achieving and gave birth to the mod culture. There are quite many games which were mods of the past and apart from that, the game is still fun as hell and me and my friends still play it.
Fortnite
Fortine has a very strange history, it was originally a defense game like minecraft where you build during the day and protect during the night but it wasn’t that successful. People had already seen the idea before, so when Battle Royale was gaining popularity, Fortnite decided to mix its defense formula with BR. The ratings for Fortnite just went off the charts and many people played it as it was released as a free to play title. It had a cosmetic market though which got Epic tons of revenue and that’s how Epic Games Store came into picture. So if a game can do so much for a company, you can definitely process the impact it had on the industry overall.
DOTA 2
Talk about mods again, DOTA was originally a genre defining mod of War Craft 3 but someone else saw its potential. DOTA was more of an underground thing, it was never so popular in the mainstream and very few knew a genre like MOBA even existed. It was around 2009 when I first saw DOTA in a cyber café where some young kids were playing it on LAN. At first, it looked like War Craft 3 but the mechanics were totally different. Soon I learnt it had a cult underground following and Valve made the smart move of acquiring the talent behind this mod and decided to make this thing into a fully blown sequel. DOTA 2 which pushed MOBA into the mainstream. Obviously there were others who joined the bandwagon of MOBA and tried to distinguish themselves. League of Legends is also another MOBA game which is popular but DOTA 2 is still considered as the king and despite of its age is still among the top played games on steam world wide. There are people who have played the game for a staggering 10000 hours and still find new and interesting things. It’s a game which is easy to learn but difficult to master.
Batman Arkham City
Batman needs no introduction, for those who do not know, Batman is a fully ripped grown man who wears Egyptian cotton underwear over a grey suit and is passionate about jumping from building to building during the night and saves the city from bad peeps. He is THE Superhero.
If you haven’t played any of the Batman games of the Arkham trilogy, stop reading this list right away and immediately go and play it! Its really good.
It is debatable which one of the trilogy is the best and its very difficult to make that choice. I personally like all the games but Arkham City is amazing for several reasons as it is an ultimate battle between Batman and Joker, the game goes open world and Gotham City is such well crafted. The Unreal Engine does a marvelous job of putting it all together and the game runs so well AND this is why I could not chose Arkham Knight over Arkham City. Arkham Knight is miles ahead of Arkham City but I made the ultimate mistake of playing it on the PC which was a bad experience. Infact the game was such a mess, Steam had to pull it off and give out refunds to the buyers. It was a great experience on consoles but this misstep was the sole reason why I did not chose it for this list.
BUT now the game has been patched extensively and is in good shape. So if you are a PC gamer and want to be like Batman, this has to be the Ultimate Batman Experience.
Bloodborne
Ever heard of souls like titles? These are considered to be difficult as combat in them is of a different nature. These are not your ordinary action games where you go in front of your enemy and start spamming attacks on them. Souls like titles have be played tactically, timing and accuracy are the name of the game. When to strike, when to dodge and parry are crucial for every encounter and even the most basic enemy can strike you down if you are not paying attention.
Bloodborne is an Action RPG title developed by From Software exclusively for the PS4, set in a dark Victorian world we are tasked to hunt down to take down perils of an odd strange world. Blood Bourne stands out for its unique art style, game play mechanics and an engaging narrative, atmospheric and immersive world design and ruthless difficulty. This game has a deep and interesting lore so a lot of content awaits.
Be warned, this game can crush your soul.
Neir Automata
Set in a dystopian cyberpunk future where sprawling urban scapes are retaken my mother nature, humanity is wiped out by what was considered as their best creation.
Take role of an enhanced cybernetic warrior who is deadly and beautiful at the same time and hack N slash your way through hoards of deadly AI constructs as you make your way to the answers of all the questions that surround the collapse of civilization.
The stunning art style, the graphics, the immersive world and level design blended with fast paced combat makes Neir Automata an unforgettable experience.
INSIDE
Inside is developed by Playdead, the same studio who made Limbo. Inside is a staggering achievement in the 2D side scroller category of games. You take role of an unknown kid who just appears in this strange dystopian world where society has changed. The world is hostile and humanity is engulfed into some kind of a strange social experiment where a few selected individuals of the upper echelon are on the verge of creating something far beyond anything we can possibly imagine.
Inside is ruthless, deadly and hostile but the art style, presentation, pacing and its subtle yet effective gameplay pulls out the unimaginable out of a genre that is so old. It redefines the side scroller genre.
Inside manages to pull you in right from the get go and as you play further, you are just lost in it.
Its depressing, dark, bold and ambitious.
Don’t miss this one out.
Horizon Zero Dawn
A PS4 exclusive developed by Guerrilla games, HZD is an open world action RPG where civilization has moved beyond its post apocalyptic phase and mankind has once again emerged out of the darkness of this cataclysmic event and is facing a whole new world.
Civilization is rebooted but is engraved on the remnants of a past civilization. It is still unknown what cause the wiping of the earlier race.
What is known are the strange metallic beasts which roam around the waste lands of earth.
Imagine fighting a giant robotic T-Rex with a bow and arrow.
That’s HZD in one line.
Metal Gear Solid 5
You wake up in a hospital one day and the doc informs you that you were in comma for 9 years, how will you feel?
Well, Snake doesn’t feel bad at all. Only few hours after waking up you are hunted down by an unknown mercenary group who simply wants you dead for reasons unknown and weird things happen that night. You still manage to make an escape, thanks to your buddy who was undercover as a patient and was protecting you all these years. Soon you embark into a Journey into the heart of Afghanistan to find the answers.
MGS5 is developed my Konami, this is when the legendary Hideo Kojima was part of the team.
MGS5 had a rough development cycle but it turned out to be a great game.
It’s a sandbox stealth action title where you can approach your target or objective anyhow you like or find it convenient. There is a lot of freedom in this game.
You can even hide in a cardboard box and turn it into a makeshift stealth device.
There is base building, you recruit captured soldiers and make them a part of your team.
It’s a damn fine game and the story sometimes just catches you by surprise.
Portal 2
Portal 2 is a first person puzzle platformer developed by Valve. These guys are magical, whatever they touch becomes gold. Portal 2 puts you in the shoes of a test subject who is a part of a scientific experiment where they are testing teleportation technology, you get hands on a portable teleportation device or simply put, a portal gun. It shoots portals of walls.
You solve puzzles by shooting portals and make use of physics. Stuff such as gravity, momentum, reflection and so on come into the picture. Thanks to the Source engine. The story is also engaging and characters are really deep and well written.
You teleport your way out of these test chambers only to discover all is not what it seems.
Portal 2 is definitely one of the finest games of this decade.
GTA 5
Seriously? Wondering why this is on the list. Go play it!
Elders Scroll 5 Skyrim
Its not everyday that you bump into a fellow adventurer who has stopped adventuring cause one fine day he took an arrow in his knee.
Skyrim is open world action RPG that is bold, ambitious and probably the best game made by Bethesda Game Studios.
Skyrim takes place in an enigmatic fantasy world which is engulfed in a political conflict and suddenly an old prophesied threat emerges and is bent on destroying the world.
You take role of an unknown traveler who happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, but as events unfold. Turns out you are not an ordinary person, you are THE dragon born. The only thing that stands between the dragons and the destruction of Skyrim is you.
Skyrim has a lot of content, side quests and the story is deep. You can keep playing Skrym for hours and hours and get lost in a different dimension.
The last of Us
Naughty Dogs knows what it does. They are the masters of their craft when it comes to developing breathtaking narrative driven experiences. The sheer amount of attention to detail which was earlier observed in the Uncharted games successfully transcends into The Last Of Us.
Exclusive to the PS4, The Last Of Us puts you into the shoes of a man who has lost many things. The world has collapsed and strange mutants ravage the world. As the man of a family it is upto you to protect your loved ones from the perils of the new dangerous world.
The production quality of the game is what sets it apart. A dark and mature story backed by well choreographed cinematics, well acted characters and a blend of stealth horror action gameplay totally set this game apart from anything on this list.
You should get a PS4 only to play this game. Its that good!
Battlefield 1
This in my opinion is the best battlefield game in recent years, obviously there are other battlefield games and I was thinking of voting for BFBC2, this one won for many reasons.
BF1 is a fast paced action multiplayer experience with a solid punch of World War 1.
The originality and the attention to detail BF1 offers is insane, right from the vast deserts in the middle east to conquests in various parts of Europe, Dice has made the perfect formula for World War 1. Its frantic combat is better than ever, tweaking a few mechanics the game is now more enjoyable and fast paced. Its like the perfect spot between fast paced combat and quick general perception of reaction to things.
The game looks beautiful and environments, animations weapon and character models are so well detailed, they all scream authenticity.
64 vs 64 players never gets dull. Also EA was less greedy about this one, I still feel bad for the Star Wars Battlefront games.
Black Mesa
This one is not a game, it’s a mod but it has to be on the list because it’s a Half-Life fan remake on the source engine, if you are unaware of Half-Life, you are dead to me.
Black Mesa is a masterpiece and it totally reimagines the original Half-Life in a way just like Valve would have. Seeing new areas in Source Engine is a visual delight, its hard to believe Wwhat limits can be Source pushed to, considering its such an old engine. Valve was truly thinking long term when they made the source engine.
Basically Half-Life puts you into the shoes of the theoretical physicist who works at a the Black Mesa Research Facility. One day an experiment goes horribly wrong and you rip open a dimension into an alien world and now its upto you to fix things.
Half-Life 1 was revolutionary and helped defined the FPS genre. SO YOU HAVE TO PLAY THIS.
The Xen levels are out now and the game has left early access, so now is the perfect time to play this timeless masterpiece.
Crowbar Collective has done a neat job.
Overwatch
This one is my eyes is the true spiritual successor to Team Fortress 2. Made ground up by Blizzard, this one was a very different thing from them.
Overwatch borrows heavy inspiration from TF2 and manages to fuse it with MOBA perfectly.
On the surface I’ve seen many people complaining this is a TF2 ripoff and its rich dudes Paladin, tbh it is like Paladin but both games have different dynamics.TF2 is more of an old school class based shooter at this point and OW is more fast and streamlined.
The wide variety of characters in OW may seem unnecessary but believe me, each one of them is well made and balanced. Its like Blizzard has a secret recipe of game balance and it becomes very clear how important it is to nail that balance in this hybrid genre when you get your hands on similar titles who achieve this perfection.
The art style is spot on and meant to age well. The graphics will never go old, such is the art style.
Jump into a few games and you wont even realize how the hours pass.
Resident Evil 2
Later this decade a legendary face re-emerged from the mythical shadows of mystery. Resident Evil is Capcoms that comes into everyones mind when we speak of survival horror games, this was the title that created the genre back in the day.
The remake is very faithful to the original, it successfully captures the tense atmosphere and the struggle of managing resources while scavenging the same old corridors of Racoon City Police Station.
While graphics and other things are aligned with 2019 standards, what is more surprising is the fact that the game is so perfectly transferred from those pre rendered 3D environmental backgrounds with fixed cameras into true 3D yet it manages to retain the whole essence of the thing. Its is big achievement and the game does its own thing in a great way.
Animations, Models, Textures, Sounds, Gunplay and the Zombie AI are perfect and the all new Mr. X is totally rad!
Resident Evil 2 being a new comer in this decade has made a solid spot on this list.
Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order
The game that saved Star Wars, honestly there were not that many good Star Wars titles in the recent years, both Battlefront games had their issues, while the 2nd one had a good production value, it stirred up the hive with its surprise mechanics. It was basically a Star Wars themed Casino and was brutally P2W. They have patched it now and is pretty playable but whats gone is gone.
Jedi The Fallen Order takes places after order 66 is executed. The Jedi order has fallen and the remnants are forced into exile. The empire has gripped the galaxy with its iron fist and the game puts you into the shoes of a young jedi who is accidently discovered by a high ranking Sith Inquisitor, the event propels the young Jedi into an epic journey of self discovery.
You travel across various planets in the galaxy and learn stuff about the lore which gives the series a fresh angle. It is clear that Respawn entertainment has put a lot of heart and soul into this game, it shows deep respect to the source material. Star Wars needed that. Also, the combat is fresh. It borrows the best of all the successful mechanics introduced in various games of the generation like platforming, souls like combat give a realistic sense to saber battles. It feels like a true Star Wars game.
Overall, this one just came out at the end of the decade and took all of us by surprise.
The Legend of Zelda Breath Of The Wild
Zelda always hands over the torch to the next generation of Nintendo Consoles. BOTW is a fresh take on the long running Zelda series. The series departs from its previous gameplay styles and throws Link into an open world filled with perils. But unlike most games, Zelda is a very relaxing game, the art style is soothing and the game is fun.
You can play this one at your own pace and follow your objectives the way you like. The game looks simple on the surface but whatever goes down the hood is very complex as the game takes interactivity to a whole new level. Climb huge rock faces, cut trees, cook food, find rare loot, craft rare stuff and do all this at your own pace.
DOOM
Rip and Tear baby! Doom 2016 is simply awesome, its fast, brutal, frantic and fluid. Story is classic as ever, where the UAC accidentally opens a portal to hell and now all the demons are pouring in from everywhere. The key difference between the previous Doom games and this one is, earlier you were stuck in a room with demons, now the demons are stuck in a room with you.
Doom gives you a huge arsenal of weapons at your disposal and heaps of demons to kill, kill them the way you see fit.
The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt
OOF…..Witcher 3….what can I say…..
CDPR has dethroned Valve in terms of game design, this is what has happened this decade. There was a time when Valve used to make the best games, now its these guys.
You step into the shoes of Geralt, a professional monster slayer who has embarked on a journey to find his missing daughters in a land that is engulfed in conflict.

Top 5 Highest Earning Esports Teams Of All Time!
Over the past 10 years the esports industry has quickly risen in popularity, titles and of course - Prize money. I remember going to a large CSGO event in England 10 years ago with the prize pool being around £500 and the very fact that there was money on the table at all was enough to attract a crowd from all over the country.
Nowadays, the prize pools are sky high with some tournaments easily clearing the $1,000,000 mark. With all of this money up for grabs it begs the question - Who has earned the most? Which team has taken home the most bacon over the many years that our favourite competitive industry has been growing? Let’s find out.
In this blog post we are going to be looking at the top 5 most highly earning eSports teams - Ever.
Let’s get into it.
Number 5 - Team Newbee - $13.967.192.62
Primarily a Dota 2 team, Newbee makes it to number 5 on our list with over 90% of their total earnings coming from their domination over the Dota 2 tournament scene. Of that total amount, over $1.3million found its way into the pocket of their player Kaka - their highest earning player from China.
Number 4 - Team Fnatic - $14.156.872.37
Fnatic is without a doubt one of the largest names in eSports so it comes as no surprise that they achieve a top 5 position in this list. An incredibly diverse roster bringing in around an equal 30% of their prize money from both CSGO and Dota 2, they really do know how to play AND win tournaments in any genre of game. Of the fourteen and something million dollars, JW tops the list as their biggest individual earner at the huge some of $744.802.35. Thats enough money to buy nearly 30,000 people a subscription to LootBear Pro. If only he were so generous.
Number 3 - Evil Geniuses - $22.845.565.11
With a difference of over $8,000,000 between number 4 and our first top 3 team, Evil Geniuses, it’s no wonder they have such an insanely huge fanbase. As with number 5, this team is primarily a Dota 2 team owing around 85% of their total bank balance to the popular MOBA.
The incredible gap between prize money across these teams is not the only huge gap. Evil Geniuses top player SumaiL has pocketed over $3.5 million dollars all to himself. That’s over 3 times as much cash as the number one player from Fnatic. Insane.
Number 2 - Team OG - $33.410.175.00
If you thought the jump between 3 and 4 was big, what do you think about this one? With over $10,000,00 separating Team OG from the team in third position they are very safely in the top 2 eSports teams in terms of monetary gain in the world.
Now, many of you will probably recognise Team OG for their incredible career in the arena of Dota 2. BUT do not be fooled. That is not their only source of income.
Team OG has earned a staggering $6,323 and 12 cents from Super Smash Bro’s tournaments as well! Equalling 0.02% of their total earnings. Ca-ray-zay!
Team OG’s top earning play N0tail from Denmark has racked in over $6.6 million in prize money which by my calculations might just about afford you a coffee and an outdated Gossip magazine in Denmark.
Number 1 - Team Liquid - $33.761.635.16
Without a doubt one of the most highly recognised names in all of eSports - Team Liquid takes the top spot. But only by a lead of around $350,000.
Team Liquids’ top earning player - MinD_ContRoL has taken home around $4.4 million of this to spend on hoo-... lovely things for his family and friends.
The craziest thing about these top 2 competitors is the incredible difference in the number of events they owe their total earnings to
Team Liquid - $33,761,635,16 from 1606 tournaments
Team OG - $33.410.175.00 from ONLY 68 tournaments.
Team Liquid has competed in well over 1500 more tournaments than Team OG and is only barely beating them in total earnings.
To put this in perspective, Team OG’s average earning per tournament (Total prize money divided by the number of events) equals out at $491,326.
If Team OG had been involved in the same number of tournaments as Team Liquid whilst maintaining this average earning amount, they would have earned a total of $7,643,957 455,19.
THAT IS OVER SEVEN BILLION DOLLARS.
Conclusion
The gaming and esports industry has overtaken the movie industry in value over the past few years and so numbers like these should come as no shock. Especially when you consider the salary of some of the top movie stars in Hollywood.
If anything, we can expect to see these numbers grow exponentially in the years to come. Professional gamers are quickly becoming the heroes of our younger generation, much like famous Footballers or athletes were to us when we were younger.

Wanna play?
In today’s generation, gaming is so common amongst the youth that it’s already a part of most children’s childhood. It is but a vague concept amongst the older generations for they only see it as a waste of time. “Kakalaro mo yan!” they said. A lot of people believe that every hour spent on gaming is every hour of our lives wasted for sheer entertainment. But from a different perspective, we have witnessed legends who will be remembered in the history of gaming forever. We have seen champions arise into the above, outplaying every opponent unworthy of claiming the throne. They are the people who have bravely decided to pursue a risky path towards success. They are the people currently living a luxurious life, earning more money than the average person, and privileged to earn money by doing what they enjoy and love. It is indeed a breathtaking view to fully see the potential and what the gaming industry has to offer. But what about the people like us? What about the people around us with no intention of pursuing an e-sports career? Well, every gamer has that one friend who always excels, surpasses older players, and reaches the highest rank at every game you play with. No, it’s not that he plays games for eleven hours straight. I wonder who does that... Definitely not me.
But what’s his name you ask? Gerard James B. Molina.
Not so many could recall one’s start for we only remember for so long as we can in our lives. A faded memory of the past gives a vague glimpse of what seems to be a notable characteristic evident within Gerard in present times. A hobby, part of our everyday lives, doesn’t usually come from a grandiose background-origin worthy of the movies but rather from the simplest moments, whether it be your mother buying a cheap computer or in Gerard’s case, his childhood friends inviting him to play a game when he was around nine years old. Although it is a relic of the past for Gerard, it was the beginning of what made him what he is today.
It is somewhat funny upon seeing people of the older generations asking “What game have you spent a total of one hundred hours on?”. Well, it does seem overwhelming knowing the fact we live in a twenty-four-hour circadian rhythm but, compared to the hours gamers usually spend? one hundred hours is literally just nothing. Some gamers were able to reach a total playtime of eighty to ninety hours just within a single week, playing a single game. Gerard often spends at least two hours just playing games alone on a daily basis and usually within his free time. He prefers playing Multiplayer Online Battle Arena, or MOBA type of games like League of Legends and Mobile Legends as it requires strategy and planning.
Online games as a whole give more diverse gameplay due to the fact that you’re dealing or teaming up with actual real humans in which Gerard prefers rather than playing against AI bots. Solo games simply mean you’ll be playing with or against Nonplayer characters or NPCs in which he doesn’t usually prefer as it only offers limited and repetitive gameplay compared to unpredictable humans as stated by Gerard himself. Online games also offer more competitive gameplay compared to solo games, urging you to become better than the opposing players. The nature and interaction between games and emotions are somewhat peculiar, of sorts. You could find yourself relaxing in the cold relaxing calm room, along with the air conditioner and the sound of rain splashing every millisecond, only for the peace to be destroyed by ten consecutive losses at a match. Gerard on the other hand does play competitively when alone but plays casually when among his friends.
I think that it is safe to say that the current gaming industry is currently popular especially in this time of pandemic as the demand for computers, laptops, and such are exponentially higher with the rise of online classes as stated by Gerard himself. Gamers are constantly begging gaming companies to release and develop more games but it most often would lead to another question: what type of game? Gerard believes that if he were to create a game, it would most likely be a MOBA game since he is well experienced in games such as League of legends and ML. It is likely that he would indeed enjoy developing those types of games if given the chance. Although Gerard thinks he could try if he has time, he has no intentions of pursuing a professional e-sports career as it is simply just a hobby of his. Most people would’ve thought and made the same decision as gaming as a career leaves us with scarce opportunities within the country.
Gaming, in general, is indeed a fun hobby but with the rise of team-based competitive gaming, the rapid growth of toxic players became more evident to all. Gerard believes that one of the most notable disadvantages of gaming is the effect it gives on the mental state of fellow gamers. He believes that toxic players are in fact, not a good example towards younger players as not only does it influence them into exhibiting more aggressive behaviors but may also leave them prone to mental disorders due to the trauma they may experience as a child. Gerard usually treats the players with positivity, sometimes by making fun of them in a passive-aggressive way, or simply just not responding to them at all. He believes that toxic players are already having a tough time playing the games themselves and just try to give them some time to cool off and play better.
Gaming is somewhat we may relate with Gerard but in another perspective, he is simply what we may call a friend. He would always be there to help around whenever you are in need whether it be towards academics or gaming. He is able to create the bond that people crave. It is those little games we always take for granted that we never even realized we were already making memories.
What was his name again you ask? Gerard James B. Molina

Experimentation in Game Development
The first Philosophical Point outlined in my team’s Game Design Document or GDD for short, which can be accessed here. Unlike the other two PP’s that follow after it, I feel like this one is the vaguest of the three. Video Games and its entire industry spans a wide variety of topics, subjects and ideas, and has a history that dates back to the earliest days of modern computing. In order to tackle this PP, I want to break it down into smaller, more refined talking points for easier specific research and digestion. To do this, let’s look at what was written in the group GDD in order to align my research with the rest of my team members:
We want to experiment with how games interact with their medium (such as PCs, Consoles, Phones, Controllers). As a group we believe that by playing around with these factors within our project’s scope, it can and will lead to a more engaging, memorable and worthwhile BCT project. Together we feel that games made at BCT should be ‘meta-breaking’ as opposed to ‘technical repaints’, while also retaining accepted aspects across the wider community (such as movement controls in FPS games on pc; using the ‘w,a,s,d’ keys or general good practice design).
From my understanding, my teammates want to experiment with methods of creating sustainable interaction with the medium outside conventional methods, in order to add an extra-meta element to the experience. Speaking meta, the term ‘meta-breaking’ is dropped here as an intended design goal for a game made by students of the BCT, as well as a statement that almost backtracks onto the first: retaining community convention.
In summary, that didn’t help at all. Thanks, James. Light-hearted passive-aggressive teasing aside, I digress. Perhaps instead we should focus on answering other questions, such as what makes a game a game? What kind of game do we want to design? What is the history of the kind of game we plan on creating? What is Meta? And is it altogether necessary to ‘meta-break’?
With these questions put forward, I can finally narrow it down more narrow topics of research:
Meta
History
Questions and Occam’s Razor
Let’s begin, after the jump.
Meta
What is it?
“Meta” is a prefix meaning “referring to itself”. But that’s not all. It has evolved into a variety of meanings that are used today, but which one is relevant in the context of video games and video game design?
meta Adjective - pertaining to or noting a story, conversation, character, etc., that consciously references or comments upon its own subject or features, often in the form of parody:
A movie about making a movie is just so meta—especially when the actors criticize the acting.
Alternatively:
Adjective - pertaining to or noting an abstract, high-level analysis or commentary, especially one that consciously references something of its own type.
There, pulled straight from dictionary.com(1), lies a couple of the meanings of the word meta, at least in the context of information as a medium. What makes something meta? Exactly as described, when the thing that exists amongst others of itself provides a commentary on being that thing. Hard to wrap your head around?
From meta also exists Metatheory, described by Wikipedia as “a theory whose subject matter is some theory.” Wikipedia also states that “All fields of research share some meta-theory, regardless whether this is explicit or correct. In a more restricted and specific sense, in mathematics and mathematical logic, metatheory means a mathematical theory about another mathematical theory.”
They even cited a quote by Steven Hawking, from his book A Brief History of Time, as an example of a meta-theoretical statement:
Any physical theory is always provisional, in the sense that it is only a hypothesis; you can never prove it. No matter how many times the results of experiments agree with some theory, you can never be sure that the next time the result will not contradict the theory. On the other hand, you can disprove a theory by finding even a single observation that disagrees with the predictions of the theory. (2)
If that doesn’t help to explain the nature of meta, it also exists in the landscape of video games, the Metagame. With Wikipedia once again acting as our faithful online source of definition, it is described as “any strategy, action or method used in a game which transcends a prescribed ruleset, uses external factors to affect the game, or goes beyond the supposed limits or environment set by the game... In simple terms, it is the use of out-of-game information or resources to affect one's in-game decisions.”(3)
The game of playing the game. How does one know what the best cards are for a certain style of deck in a Trading Card Game? Which are the best items for your character in a MOBA game? Which characters in an FPS Battle Arena game work together well to create a strong team composition? Excluding the meaning in relation to roleplaying and roleplaying games (aka “breaking character”), these are all examples of the metagame within games, another form of meta. Knowing what works best for a game because you know how that game works, or you’ve learned from other people who’ve done it for you.
That can be considered another form of meta, called Meta-Analysis. We can use an academic source for this one instead of Wikipedia, where the definition of meta-analysis is defined as “A subset of systematic reviews; a method for systematically combining pertinent qualitative and quantitative study data from several selected studies to develop a single conclusion that has greater statistical power.”(4) This can be abstracted as “Because a meta-analysis gathers data over a broader collective, allowing for larger and more diverse sample sizes and types of already pertinent evidence, its conclusion is statistically stronger than any single analysis.” Why is a meta-analysis useful? The website lists a few ways:
To establish statistical significance with studies that have conflicting results
To develop a more correct estimate of effect magnitude
To provide a more complex analysis of harms, safety data, and benefits
To examine subgroups with individual numbers that are not statistically significant (4)
Still confused? Don’t worry.
Let’s provide an example by backtracking through the History of Video Games as an Artform, starting with a wonderful meta-analysis theory YouTube video, here in my next post.

Review: Good Game
Any review of a product called Good Game runs the risk of making an unintended pun on its title, but I promise it’s only with the best intentions that I say Good Game is not at all a good show.
Good Game is a web series, created for YouTube Red by Jesse Cox and Michele Morrow. Although it is not the first, it represents a possible sea-change within YouTube to premium, on demand content in the style of Netflix or Amazon originals.
There was a lot good will from me going into Good Game; the show was created by and stars industry outsiders from the Internet. These are people who have created a following around themselves mostly based on their innate ability to entertain or inform. There’s a story behind this of self-created, indomitable personalities graduating from bedroom studios to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood. However, Good Game is not an independent production. One seasoned name attached to this project is Community and Rick and Morty creator, Dan Harmon as producer. Starburns Industries, who were the production company behind Community are also behind Good Game. The show is written by Sarah Carbiener and Erica Rosbe, writers for Rick and Morty. Good Game very much has the ethos of Harmon’s own.
Good Game has several major problems. It’s difficult to tell if this is intentional or not, but the show is not funny. This ties into the second problem, most of the principal actors cannot act. Any opportunity for levity within a line is missed. Almost every actor has successfully buried their natural charm to awkwardly squeeze into an uncomfortable role. Every line tumbles out the actors’ mouths with rigid utility, and they land hard and dark. This is another problem with Good Game; it’s dark. The show finds a melancholic tone early in the first episode and never escapes it. The second episode doubles down on this, playing with heavy topics like homophobia and racism. Serious issues can be handled in a comedy, but it needs a strong production. Finally, any hope of these rough constituent elements forming a complete whole is blundered by the production, directed by Danny Jelinek. With the exception of Dan Avidan’s irrepressible charisma in the role of Alex Taylor, Good Game cannot muster any energy; you have to wonder if someone were to make the effort to look up from their screen would they fall backwards from the exertion. A livewire personality like Arin Hanson, known for his tantrums while playing video games, is horribly miscast as a misanthrope who can barely stay awake.
This is a show with everything against it from the beginning: It cast non-actors as the principal characters, the writers have a short list of projects under them, the director has mostly directed shorts and seems uncomfortable shooting longer, more rhetorical scenes. It’s important to point out that the show does manage to tell a coherent story, but it is wrought with production mistakes and awkward writing. The show presents a clear and deep understanding of the gaming community and its jargon, but it forgets to do anything interesting with its characters. The story itself is self-consciously postmodern. Every character is ruthlessly confined to their template: The wacky stoner, the drop out, the adolescent troll, the snob, the deluded old man. It’s a cast of unredeeming characters either wearing a translucent mask of ironic cynical detachment, or they’re utterly oblivious. Like Harmon’s other shows, the world is presented as hyper-real, characters will aside to audience with uncanny exposition, the idea being we the audience are in on the joke. When the villain is presented as comically evil, Good Game deliberately distances us from the dramatic reality. This adherence to a broader, hyper reality stomps over any nuance in the characters. When we’re given glimpses into our protagonists’ lives, there is no substance to it. For example, the character Sam was an olympic hopeful until an injury ended her dream, we are never told why she wanted to be an athlete or what losing this dreams means to her, we only know that she’s upset. So when Good Game uses Sam to explore online racism, sexism and abuse, it is a heavy weight on a shallow membrane.
Good Game so desperately wants to break out of its light comedy genre and say something, but the writers are not deft enough to manage it. Good Game want the characters to transcend and deliver those gut-punching moments of sincerity, but they are unremarkable comedy archetypes, so those moments are unearned. They want to create likable anti heroes on their collective journey to redemption, but they’re just shallow assholes who are dragged through their arcs for apparent dramatic purposes.
Good Game fails to construct a convincing drama, it’s hard to know where the blame lies. It’s easy to look at the inexperience of the director, writers and actors and point fingers. It is possible pre-production was rushed, or there were other production issues; Good Game bares the hallmarks of something that needed more time to develop. However, I do believe the same people with a better project could still make a successful show.
In the final episode, show co-creator Jesse Cox and regretful in-show creator of an infamous MOBA, arranges for his own assassination on stage. He is killed in front of an audience of two indifferent cleaners. It’s a clear statement about the creator’s sacrifice. I hope this isn’t the end. I hope this is just an awkward first go and a and we’ll see these players return in something better.

Review: Battleborn
I was not there at the start, being one of the millions of players who opted towards Overwatch instead of Battleborn, which was woefully released around the same time. There was also the fact that Overwatch was twenty dollars cheaper, so basically millions of players flocked towards the safer bet with a studio with a better track record. On one hand, we had a well marketed, Pixar-esque Team Fortress game and on the other, a cartoony MOBA that had the misfortune of being compared to Overwatch for the rest of its existence. I’m here to tell you: It’s actually not bad.
Unfortunately the community has more or less died. I installed it about the day after it went free to play and it boasted about 1400 players. As of this writing in the early AM’s, there’s about 360 in-game. Could just be the hour and that does very likely rise in the evening but there’s no doubt that the playerbase has fallen off a bit, which is a damn shame because the game has a lot to offer. As a result of this, it may be a good idea to pick it up with a group of friends so that your queue times aren’t abysmal. Edit: To wit, it took me all day to even get a game going so I had screenshots to share, so that may give some indication on how long it takes to play. I’ll start with the PvE, and I have no idea when the mode was introduced but it’s a lot of fun. I randomly queued and joined another, much more experienced player in an objective-based map that took about thirty minutes to complete. Might have been faster if I knew what I was doing but they didn’t seem to mind. If there was a critique, I feel like it had a similar vibe to Titanfall 1′s laughable attempt at a campaign. In the match I played, most of the “story” was played out over a radio while we followed an NPC (which is also a playable character) around while he did some pseudoscience. After that, we’d just face against waves of enemies of variable difficulty. The map itself was creative enough with at least one death for both of us around a jump we weren’t expecting. Fair enough, kept me on my toes. The game itself was a lot of fun with a proper RPG-esque vibe as you leveled up slowly throughout the whole thing (Which is a much more rapid process in a PvP match, and speaking of)... In the main-stay mode (is that a term?), there’s PvP. Your usual 5v5 setup but if there’s some kind of lane-based map, I have yet to find it. So far I’ve only been treated to a couple of maps which were all one lane with minions. Spread around, there’s a few mechanics of note. There’s a bunch of crystals you run around to collect which can be used to activate your three items you bring in as a “loadout” which can do all kinds of things including recoil reduction and maximum health. It’s a much more streamlined variant of the item/shop mechanic present in other MOBAs. Once you’re done with that (or you could do this intermittently) there’s a bunch of turrets around the entire map you can activate. There’s accelerators that increase your run speed to get you back in the fight quicker, supply stations that will rapidly heal you so you can avoid teleporting all the way back to base, and a few offensive turret types that will keep minions and players at bay. Everything costs crystals and the bulk is usually gained by going out of your way to collect them, and it’s a neat idea. A relative flaw is that this amount is not shared like it typically is in other MOBAs. I’ve seen huge crystal-amount disparities in the stat screen because some players just don’t know about them (I’m still in novice queues).
There’s also an Operation mode which I can’t speak on because it won’t let me play them for not owning “Operations Pack 2″ or the “Season Pass”, which is not accessibly to me despite having paid 30$ for the ‘full game’. Perhaps it’s Founder specific for those who dropped the full 75$ way back in the day. It’s a shame and a bit of an oversight and I hope they fix that, but they may not if their playerbase bleeds dry. The command menu is fairly easy to use but the f2p-ness of the game rears its ugly head soon enough. Most games (which again, have mostly been in PvE and AI) net me around 900 ingame credits. Despite buying the 30$ full game pack, there’s about five heroes that cost ~42,500. That’s a lot of credits, and there’s the money-bought currency (because of course there is) that you can choose to do if one of those characters really appeals to you. Some PvP-based quests do give you some of those, but it would take a whole hell of a lot of gaming. How you feel about that is largely how you feel about the industry as a whole. If I had a major complaint is that it’s a bit difficult to figure out what the hell is going on at any given point. Perhaps it’s because I chose to main a melee character, but it could also be the fact that enemy minion health bars never show up and all of them often get de/buffed with some purple haze and I can’t tell them apart from enemy to friendly. I could be slicing away at an enemy while minions are gunning my health down from behind and I can never really tell.
The field of vision is a little off compared to other games and it’s just a bit wonky to me. When I’m in the thick of battle, I can barely tell if my hits are even connecting or not, which is why I tend to take the upgrade to Galilea where, at full health, her sword will fire these ranged energy beams to give her some reach. They don’t do as much damage as her raw sword attacks do so I am just forced to wade in where the fighting is thickest, pop her AoE... thing and hope for the best because I can’t ever really tell what I’m hitting. This might get fixed with experience as I get used to it, but that won’t happen if I can’t find people to play with. You may notice a trend here; I’m not mercilessly comparing this game to others in its genre, and that’s because I feel the game has a solid niche with many notable differences that help give this game its own soul and core. It all sadly went ignored due to its release conditions and perhaps by some less than stellar business practices, some of which are covered by Jim Sterling. I can’t speak for all of that, but in the few hours I’ve played, I have not hated the experience. Like many other things, it would probably be more fun to queue with friends. That’s really my conclusion to this; if you’re interested in picking this game I’d recommend bringing some friends along. The f2p version locks you away from the PvE side of things but there’s still plenty of AI smashing you can do together. Ultimately I do feel like I’m reviewing what is essentially a dead game, which is why Jim Sterling called his video a “depressing post-mortem”. I just felt like giving it some attention due to its recently released free status.

Five Things to Know About Getting Into the Video Game Industry
by Max Golden, Game Engineer
One of the first video game experiences I can remember playing was Chex Quest with a neighbor on a very advanced computer running Windows 98. For those of you not familiar Chex Quest, it was a reskin of the old Doom game featuring cereals and fruits battling against green slimes to save breakfast. My neighbor would handle moving with the arrow keys, I would shoot with the space bar, and together we made it all the way through the game to defeat the Flemoids and the Icon of Slime.
From that point forward, video games have been a large part of my life. I kept playing games and I grew increasingly certain that I wanted to make video games for a living. But my road into the industry was not a straight line, and there are a lot of things that people don’t tell you unless you ask. Except for me. I’ll tell you them, right here, right now. Because I care.
Having ideas for games is not the same thing as making games
This is gonna sting a bit, but it’s best to rip this band-aid off now: Nobody has ever gotten a job in the video game industry based on the strength of their ideas alone. Making video games is fun, but it’s also a lot of work, and you need to show you are willing and able to take that work on.
It’s one thing to say “I want to make a game like Pokémon in space with MOBA-like gameplay,” but it’s a different thing entirely to write out a game design document outlining major systems, mechanics, and aesthetics for the project. And that’s less work still than turning that document into a working prototype. Which is not the same thing as working on a project for a year, iterating on design, tech, and art along the way to deliver a polished project.
If you want to sit back in your chair and ruminate on what you would have done better in the new Final Fantasy game, more power to you. But don’t mistake your intellectual exercise for making games, and if you truly want to make games for a living, you will need to do much, much more.
You will start not knowing anything about anything. But everybody else starts there too.
Once you have decided to make the jump from wanting to make games to making games, you will soon face the unpleasant truth that you have no idea what you are doing. You don’t know how to create and tune tight gameplay systems. You don’t know how to implement a camera and render a scene. You don’t know how to model a character, bone a rig, and make a reload animation.
I taught myself how to program in high school, had an internship at a huge Seattle tech company, and got my bachelor's degree in Computer Science at university. I thought moving to programming games would be a snap. But it wasn’t. Because making games is not like making anything else. I knew how to implement a linked list, but I didn’t know how to pool objects to prevent memory allocation. I knew how to calculate the trajectory of a cannonball, but not how to distill that motion into an update loop so the game could show the ball travelling across a scene.
These are not things that get taught in standard high school and college courses. Making video games requires a lot of specialized knowledge about how to merge the axes of art, technology, and design to create a fun, engaging experience. Don’t expect to be able to jump in straight away and make your dream game. I wish it were that easy, but part of making games is learning that you are constrained by what is possible and by what you know how to do.
Luckily, there are a lot of people who will help you figure out what you’re doing
Making games is hard, but if you’re dedicated, it’s easy to find resources to help. Full, professional video game engines are available to you, right now, for free. Unity, Unreal, GameMaker, and a plethora of smaller tools can be found with a simple web search, and most won’t charge you one slim dime to start developing.
Along with these tools, there is a vast trove of tutorials to help you get started using them. YouTube tutorials, quick start guides, and blog posts about individual problems are all at your fingertips. There are also in-depth guides like the Handmade Hero series to help an aspiring game creator get their bearings and start creating simple content. If you are dedicated, you can find a description of how to do just about anything you’ve ever seen in a game you’ve played.
Beyond these static resources, I’ve found a number of game creators are very open to discussing their work with an enthusiastic amateur. I am almost certain I wouldn’t have a job in the industry today if I hadn’t repeatedly reached out over Steam to a AAA dev I met playing Dota, or if I hadn’t sent an email with my portfolio to a game designer I follow on Twitter asking for feedback. Your mileage may vary, but it is exponentially easier to build up your skill-set if you can talk to somebody who has already made the journey.
You will be judged on what you have done, so do something
This may seem like a catch-22: to get a job in the video game industry, you must have already made video games. It’s hard, but the truth is that anybody looking to hire a new employee wants to know what they are capable of. If you can’t show anything off, the message is that you aren’t capable of doing anything.
But there are ways around this barrier. Many game companies look at mods to judge a junior candidate, so if you make Halo maps or Skyrim mods or Civilization scenarios, take screenshots, preserve source files for download, and slap them on a portfolio. If you’re an artist, make unique, imaginative scenes and characters, and build up a demo reel. Even if your work is garbage, put it together to show you can do something and keep working to replace your early trash with newer, better content.
If you can find a team of people to start making simple games, even better. Very few people are capable of executing every part of a game concept as well as they like, so if you’re a programmer and you know an artist, team up and start making bubble bobble clones until you have better ideas.
I cannot stress this enough: having nothing to show for yourself except a dream and a degree is much, much worse than having a portfolio full of small, simple mods/art/games that you’ve seen through to completion.
Games are made by teams, so learn how to be a team player
Almost nothing you’ve ever played was made completely by a single person. World-class programmers, artists, and designers know where their strengths lie and know how to find people whose strengths complement their own. If you want to make a game you are proud of, you are going to need to work with other people, and they’re going to need to want to work with you.
Be humble. Be kind. Listen when others bring up their own ideas and concerns, and be considerate of them. Contribute your own ideas, but don’t become so attached to them you tear a rift in your team. Not every game you make is going to be your dream game, and some of them might not be games you would even play. But if you’re constantly negative about the work, people will notice and they won’t want to work with you.
And always give your best work. Every game you work on is an opportunity to hone your craft, to learn new techniques and methodologies, and to create something you can be proud to say you worked on. There will be times where you won’t be able to make something as good as you would like it to be, but there is never an excuse to deliver lazy or sloppy work, even if you can get away with it.
Your path into the industry may be simple and quick, or it may be a rocky mountain road full of cruel twists and dark tunnels. But if you’re truly devoted, keep working and learning and developing as a person and you’ll find yourself making the games you love.
