again and again i find myself lamenting that audio roleplay isn't taken more seriously by some people. like yeah, they often have a romantic element, and by nature they usually directly involve/address the listener- and i totally get that those things aren't to everyone's taste. no art or entertainment is universally appealing, and that's okay! but.. it still makes me a lil sad that the "cringe" reputation of asmr/audio rp precedes it. there's a whole lot of talent and creativity being poured into these audios by so many people that i feel goes unrecognized and/or disrespected simply due to the medium that the stories are being told through.

To the women, male feminists, gays, nonbinaries and transmascs who haven't gotten with the program yet:

If you want the rest of us (incl all trans & otherwise genderqueer ppl) to be free, cishet men need to be freed, because misandry and gender roles affect all of us, but they're the ones defining society's mainstream conception of what it is to be a Man™.

And cishet men can't do that by themselves, so they need your allyship!

Here's some simple things you can do for the men in your life:

question your misandry & anti-men/-masculinity biases

ex. do you think it's fine to make fun of/be mean to men? how do you feel about your own masculine qualities? would you do/think the same thing to/about them if they were a woman/queer person? etc

meet men with kindness & give them the benefit of the doubt

men, like anyone else, are people and not a monolith, the vast majority of them are perfectly lovely and safe to interact with and don't deserve your prejudice, they deserve to be treated as well as anyone else & are usually used to being treated significantly worse

include them in stuff & teach them skills they traditionally don't get to participate in

there are plenty of matriarchal skills that are hecking useful & not available to a lot of cishet men the way they are to women and queer people, ex. make-up, hair/nails/skin care, fashion, sewing/knitting/crafting, or even just like base social skills/presentability

value them

ex. show that you want for them to be alive, healthy, and happy; compliment them/their looks; (where applicable) express your attraction to them incl what abt them you're attracted to; etc

support them in their own self-liberation efforts

ex. emotions/mental health/self-worth, fashion/self-care, parenting/home-making, etc

respect their current limits & comfort zone

ex. if they're not/not yet comfy w something more extremely out of their comfort zone, don't push it, as it might discourage them; understand that certain things don't come to them as easily (yet) as they do to you

remember intersectionality as with all things

ex. don't forget that plenty of men have marginalised identities (mental health, disability, class, race, queerness, etc) and therefore are not the Image of Privilege you may make Men™ out to be; don't invalidate/erase transmascs' & queer men's claim to female gender role things/femininity in order to validate their manhood/masculinity; be mindful of different issues & stereotypes affecting men of different ethnicities; etc

So awhile back I had this idea on the backburner of doing a camp camp timeskip (5 years in the future in a timeline where david & gwen adopt max, 5yl for short), originally I intended to create an askblog but as of right now I don't have the time or energy to maintain something like that, so instead I'm simply going to be sharing pieces of this story at my own pace. I started with Max because he's my favorite and I had the most ideas with which direction to pull his character - David & Gwen will come next. Realistically not every character from the show cast is involved in the mains' lives anymore so not everybody will get a design, but the main five all will.

So I see a lot of people give Max something of a goth/punk aesthetic with things like chokers and excess piercings, and while I can certainly see why that happens, I personally could never picture him going that route. I think it's possibly because he reminds me a lot of my brothers all of whom tend to have a more hipster or casual aesthetic (for a long time I gave Max a beanie and I still think he'd wear one).

Along with that though, Max just never struck me as the type to overly commit to an aesthetic - he'd care abt how he looks ofc but I definitely think he'd prioritize comfort over appearance. I also hc Max with some sensory issues so things like facial piercings or choker collars would probably be irritating to him (this is me projecting my own sensory issues lol. punks you're so cool but I could never.)

So I mostly kept his aesthetic the same and focused on adding more interest to the design - as this was intended to be an ask blog I added details people would want to ask about.

The glasses are another thing that came from one of my brothers - I've never seen anyone give Max glasses (in general unless they're a nerd people just don't think to add stuff like glasses I think), and now I really like them. He gets them when he's around 14 and I haven't yet decided what visual impairment he has. I'm thinking maybe farsighted?

The long hair was something I chose on a picrew on a whim and immediately loved. I came up with this cute story plot where Max has always wanted long hair, but could never properly get it to grow out because he was never taught how to take care of his hair. He also hated going to salons bc they didn't know how to treat his hair. Then Gwen starts giving him tips and offers to do his hair for him - an offer he's extremely apprehensive about bc his experience with people doing his hair has never been good, but she does really well. She explains that she was just taught by people in her family who knew how to deal with different hair types.

Admittedly too the long hair was a decision I stuck with bc I loathe the idea that transmascs can't have or want long hair (and yes, Max is transmasc in 5yl. David is too). At this point I've created so much hair lore I could write an essay on that alone.

As for the bear pin and the bear skull on his shirt, I wanted to give Max a hyperfixation of some kind, and I just went with bears (Ik lots of children have teddy bears and it doesn't mean they particularly love bears but it's what I had to work with lol). It's the one nature thing David managed to make him genuinely like. Funnily enough I followed a few bear-themed accounts so I could write someone w a bear hyperfixation accurately, and in doing so gave myself a bear hyperfixation for awhile.

Some other details abt 5yl Max are that he loves guns and has studied them and really wants to learn to shoot, he's properly taken up knitting and he once punched somebody for calling David an ableist slur <3

(there's a lot I've put into this but it's hard to find the words to explain when it doesn't come up naturally, so I'll share plenty more abt this au when I'm ready.)

Shez being portrayed as someone who can’t help Claude through his trust issues unlike By.leth, when Shez is actually shown trying to help Claude while all By.leth does is 👁👁 and magics away Claude’s (everyone’s) issues… that shit hurts as someone who likes Shez :( Especially when I really can’t see what By.leth did in 3H that was so impactful for Claude that Shez just can’t do, when Claude’s the lord that so obviously needs/needed By.leth the least.

Like on one hand I do like that Shez can’t quite get through to Claude and how much both of them clearly want to be friends with each other but can’t quite close that distance, since it’s a relationship that’s both interesting in itself and fairly unique when it comes to Shez’s relationships in general (and removes the annoying player pandering - really lets Shez feel like a character)… but then I remember that people are just going to use this as fuel as to why By.leth is the best thing since sliced bread when they literally don’t do anything on a personal level for Claude and I just :/

yeah i don't really like seeing the negativity on shez either. i think he's a really fun character and im enjoying his interactions with the rest of the cast a lot. there's a lot of aspects to his personality that i'd like to explore further! and there's much less player pandering from what i've experienced so far, which is a huge plus for me. i haven't played gw yet but it sounds like shez and claude have an interesting dynamic there - somewhat unique, like you say, for having the relationship between the lord and the protag be a little difficult, with more trial and error than what we usually see in the 3h games. i get the feeling that that might have been what the writers were trying to go for in throuses with by/leth and claude? and it's relatively well-executed in the first few chapters but then eventually the by/leth focus still comes into play pretty hard, especially after the timeskip, and claude's distrust and his resulting apprehensive, distant stance towards by/leth peter out pretty rapidly. which is fine except it isn't even bc by/leth is really doing anything, the story just happens and claude learns new things and decides to trust by/leth now. unfortunately people disliking protags and being negative about it is just what being in this fandom is like. i mean, i try to be fair about it and i try to tag my posts correctly, but i can't say that im not being negative abt by/leth a lot. and there's plenty of people who don't do anyone the courtesy of hiding their thoughts behind tags and polite words, and that's not fun for by/leth enjoyers either. but then i really dislike how a huge part of the fandom hypes on by/leth and their importance to every character and their mum and then turn around and call shez a bland knock-off, or cold and unfeeling, or say that the characters suffer for shez being around instead of by/leth simply bc shez is a different character with a different relationship to the lords and a different role in the story as a whole. especially if you think that by/leth doesn't do a whole lot for most characters at all. and claude is definitely the lord who got hit with the least player pandering, so it's even more of a drag to see people use shez as an excuse to over-emphasise by/leth's importance to him. there's not much to do but try to ignore people who say that kind of stuff and curate your fandom experience as much as you can.

nihbihviuh thank you!!! I have a couple that I've returned to more than once just because of how well written they are, so here are some of my personal favorites.

After The Hope by soniagiris is a really good one, made in 2017(expect a lot of these not to be very recently made, btw). Honestly, I don't see enough of people doing stuff like this. Munakata and Naegi have a lot of shared trauma, and there's the potential for a really good friendship between them. And it's also yet another rarepair I low-key ship 👀 just bcs the author's fics abt them are great and wonderfully in character.

On the topic of soniagiris works, Gasoline, This one with a long name, and Witches are some other super good ones. Witches isn't 100% focused on Makoto, but y'know. It's pretty damn good for how short it is, giving you a chance to think about just how awful it would've been for him and everyone else trapped there. The second is mostly there for the ending that I can't ever stop thinking about, and Gasoline... there's so much to comment on about it. Just know that it's definitely one of my favorite angst fics out there, if not topped by something else i discover in my bookmarks. Love the ending the most tho, so many interpretations!!

Okay okay, I gotta stop showing favoritism here. So! In Too Deep and Head Above The Water are made by one of my two best friends on discord, @makotoismyson, and damn!!! Totally not being biased or anything but these are the best fics I had read in 2019. They're pretty long but very good reads, so I have little to comment on except that despair Makoto is sexy ig

This is super good. I really enjoy some simple angst fics, and what better than touching on a bit of depression? It hits hard every time I read it, and I recommend taking caution, but if you're not too sensitive to self-harm and stuff you'll enjoy this one.

This is a lot of bullying Makoto, but I can respect that. Very good idea for what should've happened when Makoto fell down into the garbage, because how in the hell did he escape mostly unscathed? Like big ol concussion and harm from the chair breaking around him, at least.

I interrupt this series of one-shots to bring you Despair, For All Eternity. And like?? Holy shit this is the best multi chapter fic I've read in... well, forever! It's an amazing time loop fic, and when it was updating I nearly cried at every chapter. It hurts in an amazing way, and though it's long, it's so damn worth every second.

MONSTER AU MONSTER AU!! Okay look I'm trying my best to remake Teras bcs I hate what I did with the original, but I think this is one of the few good things that have come out of it. One of my friends (@kuwuda) in my server made it forever ago but I still hold this fic dear to my heart. One day I'll remake Teras, just for them!

Fighting is yet another multi-chapter fic, but only four chapters this time! Very good post-canon naegiri story, has tons of angst, and damn!! Bitch I sure do enjoy Makoto saying curse words. There's something thrilling abt that.

Bottled Up is centered on Byakuya's problems quite a bit, but Makoto has his time to show some instability as well. Him being paranoid and wanting to be prepared for everything is a headcanon I can really get behind!

4:02 AM is the heaviest of all of these, I think. It's certainly something that people that are sensitive to depression, suicidal thoughts, self-harm and the like really shouldn't read. The author has plenty of other fics that are also very good, but I feel this one to be the most notable.

Welp! That's all I've got in my bookmarks! Anyone feel free to add onto this bcs I'm 100% sure there's other very good makoto angst fics out there I've forgotten to bookmark. Also, fun fact: would you believe I used to abhor naegiri? I hated it with a passion, but over time and from some interacting with one of my friends I grew to love it! Only ships I dislike are Naekusaba and Naezono, anything else I'm pretty cool with! Especially ultra rarepairs... okay time to force myself to stop rambling now

(P.S maybe you should check out @pegasister60 and her fics bcs they're lovely. I didn't include them bcs they're not super focused on Makoto angst but :3 they're very good reads)

There are... not. Not really.

There are fifteen fics in her character tag with "Accidental Baby Acquisition," and most of them are time-travel, de-aging, or Ahsoka being the baby in question or a side character to someone else's adventure.

Which is disappointing, because I feel like "Ahsoka acquires a baby and panics" is a great plot idea.

Anyways I thought I taught you to be more responsible than that. You do know what birth control is, right? Anakin: Hey, it's not my baby. And I'm plenty responsible! [A few months later] Padme: Ani, I'm pregnant!

Kix is a field medic trained in treating adults and raised in a lab - he might only have marginally more of an idea what to do with a baby than those two do, BUT: if he takes the baby away to check it for infections and similar "well, a droid scan can handle it" type stuff, then those two will have a moment to stop panicking and start thinking.
