Ok, what the fuck is going on with this new "anti intellectualism" trend? I keep seeing the most obtuse takes laced with lack of nuance on twitter. Suddently it is as if everyone is determined into making everything a part of "good guy" versus "bad guy". Especially when it comes to "cancel culture". People seem to have an issue differenciating "mistake" and "pattern of behavior". It applies to real people, to characters, to SONGS???? It's insane.
Like, with the realease of HOTD I keep seing people saying the wildest things. People have been treating luke's death with a type of seriousness that isn't warranted. Like, I understand he is your favorite character, but why are people acting as if Almond is the devil? Also, the opposite is also true. Why do people insist in trying to take the blame away from almod as if he ISN'T an antagonist? Including the authors! He IS bad and he has done BAD THINGS and he will probably do WORSE things. It's the whole purpose of the character. It's not surprising, it doesn't reflect the character of almod's fans, it should not be excused and it's annoying me so fucking much that I'm starting to wish he'd kill Jake too istg.
Or the Antihero video clip from Taylor. I've seen people say that the word "fat" was being used as a derrogatory insult in the video, and yes. It has been used as a derrogatory insult in the video, on real life, on video games, on books and on other songs. The movement to turn "fat" a positive word is great! But you can't pretend as if the prospect of "becoming fat" hasn't been the biggest fear of any woman for the past 20 years. Taylor was representing this fear, that was caused by the big media, by putting a word that has been used as an insult against her. What is the problem? Did she say that you should be scared of becoming fat? Did she say being fat is a bad thing? No, she simply showed a fear she had that is related to a EATING DISORDER. She is talking about her personal experience people, how ignorant do you have to be to miss this? It's not even a opnion she has, its literally an artistic expression of a personal experience she went through.
Then there's the whole doctor who thing, which I'm not even going to get into because I'll get angry and not be able to articulate my thoughts in a concise manner. In general, my thoughts are [insert angry emoji here].
Then there's all the crazy discussions of my country's politics, which I won't get into because there is A LOT to discuss.
Then there's Tiktok and OH MY FUCKING GOD I HAVE NEVER SEEN A PLACE SO FULLED BY STUPID PEOPLE IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. No one does any research, no one even googles anything, no one fact checks. It drives me insane. Tho, I really like tiktok when you ignore this factor.
Anyway, sorry for the rant. It was weighting on my chest and I had to get all of this out of my system.

This Week’s Horrible-Scopes
It’s time for this week’s Horrible-Scopes! So for those of you that know your Astrological Signs, cool! If not, just pick one, roll a D12, or just make it up as you go along. It really doesn’t matter. Better yet! Check out “Heart of the Game, Fredonia” and see if they can sell you those D12’s with the symbols on them. Tell them “Shujin Tribble” sentcha. And “Hail, Hail, Fredonia!” Home of the Blue Devil!
We’ve been feeling a little Under The Weather - meaning it feels like the air outside is literally denser than it normally is. It’s heavier. And considering the humidity levels, that’s be about right. So this week we’re pairing you all up with different weather-related music to help you pass the time. So load up your ZUNE, plug in your headphones, and try to stay in the shade as much as possible.
Aries
Starting us off strong you’re getting the monster rock hit from 1992 by Guns N' Roses : November Rain. This song evokes the feeling of a dreary, lonely November downpour with an iconically memorable guitar solo that’ll have you wanting to listen to the raindrops pelting the roof outside your window. So This Week… It’s OK to open your window at the top so you can hear the rain better. Just not from the bottom so you don’t get your bed wet.
Taurus
You get to groove with the smooth this week. Going back to 1993 and the movie “Cool Runnings” you’re getting Jimmy Cliff’s version of a Johnny Nash classic,  I Can See Clearly (Now The Rain Is Gone). This song's lyrics and vocals are enthusiastic and hopeful, reminding us that there will be a brighter day coming after the rains. So This Week… Try to remember that REGGAE and SKA are two different musical styles and it’s OK to enjoy them both.
Gemini
Since we mentioned the early 1970’s, let’s remind you that in 1971 there was a genre of music called “Swamp Rock”. One of the biggest names being Creedence Clearwater Revival, and their hit Have You Ever Seen The Rain? The song's lyrics explore the contradictions and cyclical natures of life. How, eventually, bad things will end and good will return. So This Week… Next time you’re in your car put on this song, full volume, and sing the lyrics with your full voice all the way through. We dare you to NOT feel good and uplifted afterwards.
Cancer Moon-Child
With Lyrics by Richard B. Smith and music by Felix Bernard written in 1934, you’re hopefully feeling cooler with Winter Wonderland. The song’s about enjoying the beauty and stillness of the snow, and you can already hear the sound of the ice crunching under your boots, right? So This Week… Just because Michael Bublé may have repopularized this wintery tune by doing a modern version doesn’t mean he’s a good singer. Remember: “Popular” doesn’t necessarily mean “Good”. Follow your heart.
Leo
Let’s drop you back into 1970 and legendary singer-songwriter James Taylor’s classic, Fire And Rain. It’s an exploration of loss through life and how to move on after grief. It’s a gentle, soothing, guitar ballad that’s hard to dislike. So This Week… Just remember one of his other song titles, You’ve Got A Friend. We’ll be here for you. And sometimes mental-health support comes in the form of a chocolate cake. We’ll make you one.
Virgo
We have to jump forward almost 25 years for you this time. The 1994 song title is Lightning Crashes by “Live”. It’s an Alt Rock, Post-Grunge, Pop Rock song that explores themes of life, death, and love. It's a song that makes you think about your relationships and destiny through melancholy and emotional vocals. So This Week… Remember the expression “Lightning Doesn’t Strike The Same Place Twice”? It isn’t true. It’s OK for you to be paranoid that something bad will hit you again.
Libra
Ever heard the musical genre called, “Psychedelic Soul”? Yeah, we hadn’t either, but whatchu gunna do when the name lands perfectly? We’re talking about Smash Mouth’s 1997 song Walkin' On The Sun. If nothing else, the rap verses of this song are energetic and fun to listen to. So This Week… Try to remember that you CAN create an entire career on three minutes and twenty-six seconds!
Scorpio
Let’s drop you to 1940 and a song by Jimmie Davis & Charles Mitchell - a song that you didn’t know that you know. The culturally-known You Are My Sunshine.  It’s a staple of childhoods for generations and likely to be for generations to come. So This Week… What’s going to be more important for you? Being remembered for doing something, or letting the something be remembered long after you’ve been forgotten? Work towards that goal.
Sagittarius
As a weird one, this one’s hard to beat. Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head by BJ Thomas was a hit in 1969, and was an odd choice to put in the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”. In none of the scenes with the song was there rain, but who cared? They didn’t have rain in “Spider-Man 2” when they used it either. It’s a bouncy, positive reminder to smile through the rain and await the sunshine after the storms. So This Week… There’s a My Little Pony song with a similar theme to it: “Let It Rain” sung by Sunset Shimmer. Check it out sometime.
Capricorn
The 70’s are really popular on this list, huh? One more from 1972, It Never Rains In Southern California by Albert Hammond. It’s a Soft Rock song with lyrics that evoke the feeling of being in the desert, emotionally. It’s a yearning for love and connection. So This Week… Connections are needed for social creatures like humans. You’re Human. You need SOME connections, like it or not. And virtual connections work too.
Aquarius
We’re going back to the cold weather and long-cold nights with 1945’s classic Let It Snow by Sammy Cahn. It’s all about the fun things to do in the winter, while you watch the snow fall. If you feel a bit nostalgic, that’s OK. That means the song’s connected with you on an emotional level. So This Week… Emotional connections are good. Think about them this week and marvel at just how long-lasting they’ve been for you.
Pisces
You don’t really like Country and Country Rock, but Garth Brooks’ song Thunder Rolls from 1991 just works for you. It illustrates the darker side of relationships when things are stormy within and without and makes you feel like you have a ringside seat to the narrator’s breakup. And reminds us of the breakups and rough times we've experienced in our lives. So This Week… You’ve grown up after all those rough patches. It’s not been easy, sure, but at least you’re better because of them.
And THOSE are your Horrible-Scopes for this week! Remember if you liked what you got, we’re obviously not working hard enough at these. BUT! If you want a better or nastier one for your own sign or someone else’s, all you need to do to bribe me is just Let Me Know - or check out the Ko-Fi page ( https://ko-fi.com/icarusthelunarguard )! These will be posted online at the end of each week via Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, Discord, and BLUESKY.

castiel’s top 13 taylor swift traxx
1.7k words | read it on ao3
“What’s this?”
Dean looked up at Cas from his desk chair, confusion apparent in his curled lip and furled eyebrows. Cas had stalked into his room a moment before and unceremoniously dropped a small rectangle on the table in front of Dean.
Cas gave Dean a small, close-lipped smile while rubbing his hand over the other repeatedly. “It’s a mixtape. Like the one you made me.”
Dean flipped the mixtape over in his hands to read what Cas had written on it. Apparently Cas was getting a lot of use out of the rainbow pen set Sam bought him last week, because ‘CASTIEL’S TOP 13 TAYLOR TRAXX’ was spelled out in bright purple ink on the front of the tape. Dean smiled at Cas’ loopy handwriting before clearing his throat and asking, “Taylor?”
“Taylor Swift. I know your favorite artist is Led Zeppelin and you shared their music with me, so I wanted to return the favor. Sam taught me how to make the tape.” Cas beamed proudly at this accomplishment.
Dean almost grimaced but caught himself so he wouldn’t disappoint Cas. “That’s great, Cas. Thanks. I’ll check it out later.”
Satisfied with that answer, Cas folded his hands behind his back and left Dean to himself again.
About an hour after Cas left Dean’s room, Dean put down the papers he was looking through for a case to reach for the mixtape again. Dean knew why he made that Led Zeppelin mixtape for Cas, but he didn’t think Cas understood human customs like making a mixtape for someone. His feelings for Castiel had become… complicated, as of late. Dean was terrible at expressing himself, but he’s always been able to understand his feelings a little more through his favorite songs. He recently realized (embarrassingly enough) that he had developed quite a crush on the former angel. He knew that he would explode if he didn’t do something about it, but he didn’t want to ruin their friendship. Thus, ‘Dean’s Top 13 Zepp Traxx’ was born.
The only tape player Dean still had was in the Impala, so he grabbed a jacket and shoved the tape into his pocket. He managed to avoid Sam on his way out, which meant that he avoided having to give a lame excuse for going to sit in his car for thirty minutes or so by himself. He opened the door to the Impala and slid onto the bench before pulling the tape out of his pocket and sliding it into the player. A twangy country beat immediately sounded from the speakers and Dean groaned. How was he going to get through a whole mixtape of just Taylor Swift? She was talented and all, but not Dean’s thing. The things he was willing to do for that angel. He closed his eyes and leaned back to rest his head against the bench, listening as a young girl’s soft voice began to sing.
I like the way you sound in the mornin’
We’re on the phone and without a warning
I realize your laugh is the best sound I have ever heard
Dean sat straight up at that, hitting his head on the roof of the car. He rubbed at the bump forming on his scalp while trying to process the lyrics that were still playing repeatedly in his mind. What did Cas mean by putting this song on a mixtape he made specifically for Dean? Probably nothing, he tried to reason with himself. This is just one of Cas’ favorite songs. It doesn’t have anything to do with Dean. Maybe Cas was trying to tell Dean that he was interested in someone else. Maybe Cas did understand the meaning of Dean’s mixtape and was trying to let him down gently. Dean had apparently been lost in thought for the entirety of the song, because as the final chorus filled the Impala he felt his breath catch in his throat.
Whoa-oh, I’m feeling you baby
Don’t be afraid to jump then fall
Jump then fall into me
Baby, I’m never gonna leave you
Say that you wanna be with me too
As the first song ended, Dean picked up the case the mixtape had been inside to read the names of the songs that Cas had listed on the back. The next one was called Sparks Fly. Dean smiled to himself at that, reminded of the night he and Cas had met in that barn covered with sigils. Sparks had flown, but not for romantic reasons, like Taylor suggested in the song. He guessed Cas probably took the lyrics a little too literally, as he did with most things. This theory of Dean’s was proven to be true, as a song that was apparently called Don’t Blame Me blared loudly, causing Dean to rush to turn the volume down.
And baby, for you, I would fall from grace
Just to touch your face
If you walk away
I’d beg you on my knees to stay
This one was a little too on the nose, Dean thought to himself. Again, he allowed his mind to wander, questioning the reason behind Cas’ decision to put this song on a playlist for Dean. It took quite a bit of effort to make a mixtape, especially nowadays. Dean would know. Cas would have had to painstakingly record the songs that he chose for some particular reason that Dean couldn’t determine so far. He allowed himself to fantasize for a moment that it was Dean that Cas so desperately wanted before shaking himself from his thoughts.
Dean had to admit, these songs weren’t half bad. There was even one about cowboys that was probably his favorite so far. Not that Dean’s biased or anything. The next song faded in softer than the others, which caught Dean’s attention immediately. He focused on the words, leaning forward slightly with his hands folded in his lap.
All these people think love’s for show
But I would die for you in secret
The devil’s in the details, but you got a friend in me
Would it be enough if I could never give you peace?
Dean frowned at these lyrics. Is this how Cas felt about himself? Did Cas really think that he brought only chaos to their lives? Dean supposed that Sam and himself hadn’t really ever said anything to suggest otherwise. He made a mental note to do better about showing his appreciation for Cas. The next few songs played through, and against his better judgment, Dean was starting to really enjoy himself. Before he knew it, the last song was playing, and the tape stuttered to a stop. He sat there quietly for some time after the last note played through the speakers.
He had two options here. He could be a coward, like usual, and let this mixtape thing be forgotten over time as they continue to dance around one another. Or he could confront his friend and potentially destroy their relationship. Eventually, Dean gathered his things and moved back toward the bunker.
Cas was in the kitchen by himself, drinking a cup of coffee out of a mug that said ‘Plant Daddy’ on it. Dean had purchased it for him as a joke when Cas got into gardening, and it immediately became Cas’ favorite. He had his reading glasses on along with an old flannel of Dean’s, which made Dean feel like he was going to explode for reasons he couldn’t quite pinpoint. Dean walked up to him and placed the mixtape on the table, as Cas had done to him only a few hours previously.
“Why did you make me this mixtape, Cas?”
Cas pursed his lips for longer than Dean could handle before taking his glasses off and standing up from the table to move toward the sink. He rinsed out his mug before turning back around to face Dean, bracing himself on the counter behind him.
“I find myself… able to relate to the words she sings, moreso than the artists that might be considered more ‘age appropriate’” – Cas’ hands went up to form finger quotes around the phrase – “for myself. Since becoming human, these new emotions have been very difficult to process. I feel like Taylor understands me. The songs I chose… I picked them because they reminded me of you. That’s what Sam told me humans do when they make a mixtape for someone they care about.”
Dean felt himself freeze. He looked down at the mixtape in his hand for a moment, before looking back at Cas again. He thought back to the tracklist he had already committed to memory. It all came to him at once, the lyrics flooding his brain.
My pain fits in the palm of your freezing hands
We’re driving down the road, I wonder if you know
I ain’t gotta tell him I think he knows
Please don’t be in love with someone else
Dean stepped forward, crowding into Castiel’s space. He opened his mouth, and nothing came out. Dean closed his eyes to steel himself, before opening them again and confidently saying, “I’m not in love with someone else, Cas. It’s you. It’s always been you. And I’m sorry if I’m reading the wrong thing into this situation but I – “
Dean was cut off by Cas, who had reached out and grabbed his face before crashing their lips together. Once Dean’s brain caught up to the rest of his body, he started kissing Cas back, pushing the angel into the countertop. This was nothing like Dean’s fantasies, which were always aggressive and usually the result of an argument or a near-death experience. This was achingly slow and sweet with the promise of more.
Cas was the one to pull back to breathe first. Dean followed his lips, wanting more. He would have gladly drowned in Cas. Cas noticed Dean’s eagerness and laughed softly. “I love you too, Dean. I made the mixtape hoping that you would understand what I was trying to tell you. Evidently, it worked.”
This time, Dean was the one to wrap his arms underneath Cas’ to pull him in for another kiss.
After what felt like an eternity, Dean pulled back and smirked, running his hand through Cas’ hair as he spoke. “So… you’d really ‘fall from grace just to touch my face’, huh?”
Cas rolled his eyes, but nonetheless gave Dean an endearing smile. “I already did, Dean. And I’d do it over and over again if it meant I could have this.”

Wicked Game Fanmix
Look I said I’d make this in 2018 and then life was A LOT but I finally finished it today and frankly it’s still my absolute favourite BFU fic.
If you haven’t read Wicked Game go read it ( and send your adoring praise to @mephsation ) If you’re swerving spoilers do NOT read the rest of this yet bc boy am I about the quote the shit out of my favourite fic and also I’ve written a brief summary of every chapter in case people have forgotten.
If you don’t want to read my reasoning and just want the songs here’s a Spotify playlist
So Chapter one: Shane’s just joined the precinct, when Ryan works out the scene they’re at was by a copycat rather than the Lover Shane responds by just saying “You’re Brilliant.”
We’re gonna be friends- The White Stripes, it’s the beginning of Ryan impressing Shane and they’re already conversing easily, honestly this is the chapter I struggled to find a song for the most.
Chapter two: This is where we meet Jess for the first time and find out about her and Shane’s relationship. It’s also when Ryan establishes that the copycat is shorter than the killer so the song I picked was
Looking up- Paramore, granted this is entirely down to the first lyrics being “Things are looking up oh finally” but it’s a banger anyway
Chapter three: This is when Ryan gets the first email. Ryan also nearly gets stabbed and Shane shoots a suspect, the copycat writes ‘he’s not good enough for you’ in blood.
Chic- Leadley primarily for “We could last forever she could last all week” Jess is so sure she’s better suited to Shane than Ryan is.
Chapter four: The second email arrives, explaining that the Lover has killed a man for the first time, the man looks like Ryan.
One More Murder- Better Than Ezra “One more murder in this town don’t mean a thing” which is what Ryan tries to convince himself after a lookalike is murdered.
Chapter five: This is where Ryan first realises he has a crush on Shane, it’s also the chapter with the press conference where the Lover’s sexuality is raised and when Shane admits he’s questioning is sexuality sending Ryan into a slight spiral based on his fear of being outed.
Would you be so Kind?- Dodie I’m not sure who’s POV I think this applies to more at this point.
Chapter six: This is the chapter where Ryan apologises to Shane for his reaction to him coming out, it is also the chapter where an LAPD officer who is the exact same race as Ryan and looks like him is killed, Ryan throws up.
Fear and Loathing- Marina and the Diamonds This is mostly in relation to Ryan’s fears about coming about though I suppose could also be applied to the whole serial killer killing people who are very similar to him thing.
Chapter seven: This is when Ryan and Shane go on their Not! Date that is definitely a date, it ends in their first kiss and Shane blowing him on the couch “Please don’t make me regret this”.
Brilliant Mind- Furniture throughout the fic Shane is constantly fascinated by how ‘brilliant’ Ryan is and this chapter epitomises that. “ You must be out of your brilliant mind”
Chapter eight: Ryan tells Shane about the homophobia he’s experienced in the past, Jess finds out they spent the night together “woke in an empty bed aching for a presence he has no business missing”. Shane is helping a friend clean their apartment so he goes to meet Jess at a bar and gets spiked.
Far too young to die- Panic! at the disco I went with this song because essentially it’s a recurring theme that Ryan almost dies also the obsessive nature of the verses fit in with Shane’s behaviour “ I've never so adored you, I'm twisting allegories now,I want to complicate you, Don't let me do this to myself”
Chapter nine: This is when Ryan wakes up in the hospital, Shane starts to behave oddly and just says he is working on a theory, he also invites himself over to take care of Ryan, Ryan discovers the cleaning supplies in a publi bin. The chapter ends with Shane revealing that Jess is the copycat and the bombshell of “Schmidtt thinks I’m the lover”
If I lose it- Charlie Simpson A little because of the medical stuff at the start of the Chapter a lot because Shane seems so scared for Ryan and ultimately the uncertaintly at the end of the chapter “ I can't tell you what will happen, To us as the days passed, Please just stay with me.”
Chapter ten: Shane plays the recording of Jess, Ryan plans to spend a night with Jess despite everyone telling him not to. Shane begs Ryan not to be scared of him “no more innocents” Jess texts him that she is going to kill someone if he doesn’t come to her immediately, he locked both their guns in the safe so goes unarmed.
Pressure- Paramore this is frankly one of the most stressful chapters to read because Ryan commits dumbassery after dumbassery and I think this embodies that intense STRESS feeling very well
Chapter eleven:Jess is arrested, Shane almost shoots her in full view of the bodycam, Ryan gets shot and Shane is going on trial to ensure Jess pleads guilty.
Coming Down- Halsey This is where Ryan starts to see a possible darker side to Shane  “I found the Devil, I found him in a lover, And his lips like tangerine, In his color coded speak”
Chapter twelve: This is when it’s officially revealed that Shane’s a murderer, he stands by no innocents killing Leo Tayler with an axe after he caused the deaths of his children.
Monster- Paramore “ You were my conscience, so solid, now you're like water We started drowning, not like we'd sink any further” this is the point at which Ryan’s conscience is starting to slip (even if it’s giving Shane more of one)
Chapter thirteen: With no more murders they are eventually taken of the Lover case Jess’s trial is over quickly and she pleads guilty, Shane’s trial drags on, Ryan finds out he killed a criminal in one of his first weeks on duty, he’s found not guilty, Ryan sees Shane at the firing range and says that he wants Leo to be dead, he gets home from work to find Shane in his LAPD uniform.  The head is delivered to Ryan
Crazy=Genius- Panic! at the Disco, this is a bit of a summary of Shane’s character throughout honestly but also this really feels like the turning point of no return, Shane would do anything for Ryan including murder, and it’s through his ‘genius’ he was found not guilty.
Chapter fourteen: As they investigate Leo Taylor’s murder Ryan begins to suspect Shane, this is where he quizzes Shane, discovers a knife in his home that isn’t his, later whilst investigating the deaths of sex wokers Ryan runs into a building without back up, Shane shoots Douglas and Ryan basically asks him to kill Murray
One Little Lie- Simple Creatures because at this point Ryan basically knows Shane is a murderer he just gets very good at lying to himself “I tell myself one little lie and the pain don’t phase me”
Chapter fifteen: So basically whilst fucking Shane Ryan thanks him for killing Douglas and then he bites him until it draws blood because Shane asked him to/ They manage to book a holiday eventualy, Ryan finds out Shane has a ssecond phone and saves the number. They go literally everywhere Ryan loves: Knotts Berry Farm, A Lakers Game, Disneyland there’s a car crash and Ryan stops to save the victims. Shane admits he wouldn’t have stopped. When they’re due to return to work Shane leaves early. When Ryan gets to work there’s a rung on his desk and email from Shane. He tries to call him on both phones “ I would’ve said yes”
Already Gone- Kelly Clarkson look when I started this playlist this was the only song I was certain was fitting for this particular part of the story because in his own way Shane is trying to protect Ryan by leaving. “ And I want you to know, You couldn't have loved me better, But I want you to move on, So I'm already gone”
Chapter sixteen: Shane watched him for ten years. Ryan remarries after moving to Chicago although he still wears Shane’s ring around his neck. Another killer goes after him. Shane finds out and it culminates in his shooting Weber. Ryan instantly knows it’s Shane and makes a come hither motion.
I felt younger when we met- Waterparks Ryan has had the guilt of hiding what he knows about Shane for a decade, he still cares about him but it kills him inside “ Do you see, You're the reason I can't sleep?, Lose it where your head should be”
Chapter seventeen:Ryan and Shane meet in a bar, Shane tells him the names of everybody he killed, they go home together after Ryan tries and fails ot arrest him, Shane chokes him until he’s either unconscious or dead and turns himself in the next day
Pompeii- Bastille This chapter is straight up just dark nostalgia (which frankly you can inject into my veins) “And if you close your eyes, Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all” In the dark between my sheets

Top 10 Netflix Watches in 2020
A roundup of my favourites from what I’ve watched this year on Netflix.
 1.       Alice in Borderland
I only recently finished this (in like 2 days) and it is the best thing I watched this year. 10/10 will recommend, will pine for season 2, will attempt the webtoon even to keep my obsession at bay.
If you have not heard of AIB, you must be living under a rock. Or don’t have Netflix which is close to the same thing. The premise of AIB is that 3 friends suddenly find themselves in an alternate Tokyo where all the residents have mysteriously disappeared. They quickly realise they have to play pretty sadistic games to in order to survive and lives are dispensable. It has elements of Battle Royale (hey, also Japanese! The Japanese have some serious issues.) but I found AIB more engaging and suspenseful than Battle Royale because unlike Battle Royale which can be thought of as one long killing game, AIB is a series of many, extremely stressful but shorter games that aren’t just about killing each other.
What works so wonderful for AIB is the storytelling. It has AMAZING storytelling. How the characters progress from stage to stage and the mystery behind this “country” they’re in is kind of slowly revealed, how there are parallels with Alice in Wonderland, the playing cards, the excellently fleshed out characters. *Chef’s kiss* Chishiya is my favourite character. LONG LIVE CHISHIYA! I don’t care if everyone else dies but CHISHIYA MUST LIVE.
There are things I didn’t like about it, but it’s less to do with the show and more to do with Japanese acting/dramas in general. I find it very unnatural when the characters give very dramatic outbursts or attempt to act gangster-ish but I find this is very common in most Japanese shows. So I like to believe it’s a cultural thing. I also didn’t like the pointless skin showing and sex. I mean, we get an entire scene where a girl in a bikini fights a katana wielding mad man. But I think it might be more because it was adapted from a webtoon and it’s just adapting the anime style? And EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER has a depressing backstory, like every single one has some weird ass issue. (Tell me it doesn’t sound like Battle Royale.)
But overall, AIB’s winning combination of great world building, excellent storytelling and likeable characters, makes it my favourite in 2020.
 2.       Kim’s Convenience
I’ve talked about Kim’s Convenience before so I shall not go too much into it. It’s great, just watch it. If only for Appa. Just watch it for Appa. Appa is best. I love Appa.
 3.       Kingdom (S2)
I started on Kingdom quite a lot later than most people. Mostly because I’m a coward and horror is well, horrifying. So I watched Season 1 about 1-2 weeks before Season 2 was released. Must say I’m glad I did cos hello cliff hanger much?!?!
S2 was great too. Has all the elements I loved in S1. Excellent storytelling, the suspense, the build up, NO ROMANCE (makes it a frickin unicorn in Korealand), believable villains but the thing I enjoyed the most about Kingdom is the relationship between characters. SO PURE. SO REAL. SO AMAZING. MUST PROTECT.
The one thing I didn’t like was how the damn characters like to do this thing where they’d just freeze and AIIIISIH FFFFFFUUUUCCCCKKKKK and draw out the suspense when a literal tonne of zombies are coming for them. Like dude, RUN. But no. They will pose there like fucking idiots for like 2 minutes while the zombies come closer and closer till FINALLY, someone goes “RUN, YOU FOOLS” before they move a muscle. It’s nonsensical, it’s frustrating but it happens in every damn Korean show so… I’ll give it a pass. It’s not the show, it’s Korea.
No news if there will be a season 3 but there is a special episode being released next year, a side sequel of sorts. So… yay?
Still, IS GREAT. WATCH IT. LOVE IT. DESPAIR WHEN IT’S OVER.
 4.       Queen’s Gambit
This baby made chess sexy. How it did it, I have no idea. But 10/10 will recommend. It made chess so alluring, I downloaded a damn app and played 2 games and remembered how much I sucked at chess and promptly deleted the app again.
Anya Taylor-Joy is beautiful. Will recommend just for her face alone. And the beautiful cinematography. Beautiful, the whole thing is just beautiful.
I didn’t like the guy that played Benny though. Seriously what a weird casting choice. Dude is supposed to play some devil may care gangster but he looks like he’d fall over if breeze came by.
I think what makes Queen’s Gambit so appealing is that you see Beth succeed and rise up, then falls dramatically down but she comes back and triumphs over her chess opponents and her own issues. It’s essentially a story of overcoming adversary, of triumph. Gives you hope. Gave me hope. Made me want to play chess. Made me watch entire Youtube videos explaining the chess games featured in it. I’ll say that’s a win.
 5.       Sweet Home
My (and apparently the rest of the world’s) latest obsession. Well, my obsession is actually less the show, more just one character/actor.
CHA HYUN SOO IS A PRECIOUS BEAN THAT MUST BE PROTECTED AT ALL COSTS. So frickin precious, with his broomstick spear and mismatched socks. I. LOVE.
But honestly, it is a pretty good show, my obsession with Song Kang (the actor) aside. The world building in Sweet Home was pretty well done, characters were compelling though as with Kingdom, characters do the same thing where they just stand there and freeze when danger is about to descend on them. Seriously, I lost count of the times I yelled HELLO FOOL RUN!??! at the screen. If the Spanish have magical dicks, then Koreans have idiotic legs.
I think the director/writer made a deliberate decision not to explain how the infection (if it’s even an infection) occurs, how monsters can be defeated or if they can even be defeated, and how the monsters’ abilities/traits are determined. And I enjoyed the mystery of not knowing and could understand the characters’ despair better because they were just as bewildered as me. (Me being me of course went to read a bit and it is explained more in the webtoon the show is adapted from but, I like to think the two are different.)
I find myself comparing it to Alice In Borderland quite a bit. Might be because I watched them one after another but also, the main characters share such similar traits, they even look similar. And with that comparison, AIB won. AIB has better storytelling and pacing. But Sweet Home has more characters you feel for and more deaths you care about. I cried a FUCK TON watching Sweet Home.
It’s good. Would recommend. If only to stare at Song Kang’s perfect face. 😊 Oh oh oh and the Soundtrack is also 10/10.
 6.       Derry Girls
I did not expect to like Derry Girls as much as I did. This was supposed to be a mindless Circuit Breaker watch for me but it was SO FUNNY! I related so hard to the characters because I was from an all girls catholic school in my youth.
Each episode is a bit of a standalone so you don’t even have to watch the episodes in chronological order. But they are all SO DAMN FRICKIN FUNNY. That’s what I loved the most about Derry Girls. It’s just funny. Watch it if you want something to make yourself happier.
Also, Irish accents are LOVE. That alone is worth the A grade.
 7.       Criminal United Kingdom S2
Depressing as fuck but so engrossing. It’s literally watching a mystery unfold. The acting is also 10/10. Though the episode with Kunal Nayyar (Raj from BBT) made me very uncomfortable because I couldn’t unsee Raj.
What makes Criminal even more amazing is that there is only one set, an interrogation room. So the show can only rely on the writing and acting to be good. And it is really really very good. Not light watching but feed your soul with the excellent artistry.
(S1 is just as good as S2. 100% will recommend the entire Criminal Series TBH. France, Germany and Spain all are good.)
 8.       Teenage Bounty Hunters
CRACK. 10/10 SOLID CRACK. The show is as ridiculous as the title suggests. But I enjoyed it because it was so engaging! Storytelling was great, characters were great and IT WAS SO FUNNY. Great light watching. 😊
 9.       Dirty Money
ALSO DEPRESSING AS FUUUUUUUUCK. But I learned so much from it. Will not recommend watching it all at one go but it was hella educational. I feel like it opened my eyes to many things.
 10.   Dr Jason Leong Hashtag Blessed
SO FUCKING FUNNY. Nuff said.

hello, its nora again ( she/her, gmt ) n this is the ethereal but spoiled alma olive putnam (she goes by all 3 names cos she’s pretentious as fuck).  ive never used anya taylor joy as her fc before but anya has a smile that looks like she knows something u dont and thats completely alma’s vibe so we’re gonna try it out. she was raised in a farmhouse in vermont, big horse girl energy. very hungry for everything life has to offer. wakes up and smells the success in her blood. luvs the smell of libraries and listening to french music from a tinny record player in knee socks. here is pinterest. bio is below the cut, like this post to be bombarded with plotting messages but i might forget or get shy tho so pls message me x
application template.
ANYA TAYLOR - JOY   ,   CIS-FEMALE   ,   SHE/HER         →         according   to   the   school   records   ,   ALMA OLIVE PUTNAM   has   been   attending   sacred   heart   for   the   past   three   years   .   i   last   saw   them   hanging   around  the  sacred   heart   cathedral   ;   i   think   they   were   studying   the   stations   of   the   cross   with   a   smile   like   a   well - kept   secret.   at   twenty   -   one   years   old   ,   alma   has   been   studying   classics   and   get   this   ,   i   heard   that   she   has   made   a   fortune   on   the   black   market   by   forging   renaissance   art   to   sell   to   collectors   —   figure   it’s   true   ?   everyone   around   here   always   associates   them   with    neck   scarves   tied   around   your   throat   the   way   they   do   in   french   new   wave   films , running   barefoot   through   the   woods   drunk   on  red  wine   and  untapped   power , a  smile  like  a   locked   door   that   speaks   only  in   riddles  .   in   the   time   since   these   strange   happenings   ,   they   have   have   encountered   any   unexplained   occurrences   .         (   written   by   nora   ,   24   ,   she/her   ,   gmt   )
aesthetics.
a red beret nestled on top of bright platimum locks, neck scarves tied around your throat the way they do it in french new wave films, running barefoot through the woods in feckless hedonism, china dolls with porcelain faces lined against the walls of your room, the mona lisa smile, knee-socks tugged over the hockey grazes on your knees, a forged botticelli drying on your easel, ophelia floating in the middle of a lake.
proceed w caution, tw for death, drugs, alcohol, violence
the short form. (still long af tbh)
— studying classics cos she thinks it makes her sound smart, but actually hates fuckin latin and just loves learning about feckless hedonism and the festivals of bacchus and writing about how all women in myth are literally forgotten. was expelled from princeton in her first year so her parents basically paid her way into sacred heart and the board really liked her in her interview. i think the governors kind of expect to see her in the supreme court one day or st
—  born in vermont in a big old farmhouse. her great-great-grandfather moved to america as an immigrant and worked on a plantation, made his way up cos he could speak a lot of languages and therefore win more people over. for the last two generations, putnam men have owned the farm and do little of the dirty work. big in the meat industry.
— both her parents had large personalities, so alma’s never really been shy around adults, even as a kid she’d speak to them in a forthright, confident manner, and because she was always surrounded by adults, she’s always seemed a bit wise beyond her years.
— very much a consolidation of every character in the secret history. has a morbid longing for the picturesque at all costs. obsessed with w.h. auden and the beat poets. — ”aestheticism is the only thing worth pursuing and even that is pointless” — is majoring in classical civilisation. can read ancient greek and latin. also speaks french.
— studies hard and plays hard. she gets top marks but it’s because academia is literally her life, she loves the smell of libraries, the ancient smoke of learning, of feeling like old wine in a new bottle reincarnated from the bones of some old, dead witchy woman who invented a cure for cowpox or somethin.
— isn’t a foward-planner, however. alma prefers to leave her options open, play the field, live in a spontaneous manner so her study style is mostly cramming a few days before a test, or staying up all night writing an essay on a massive adrenaline boost powered by red bull or probably adderall, scribbling (or typing) furiously into the night.
— pretentious motherfucker. loves poetry, especially the romantics, loves morbid ones too, edgar allen poe, sylvia plath, allen ginsberg, she just loves them all. can’t get enough. her favourite films are like…. wanky artfilm independent european cinema. especially french new wave. “what do you think of goddard’s work??” while snorting a line off someone’s sink at 5am on a school night, but you can bet she’ll make it to that 9am class. — very intelligent and beautiful and knows both of those facts. plays devil’s advocate. humanitarian, vegan. — judgemental but takes great care not to appear so. petty and vindictive
— obsessively devours mystery and thriller novels. she herself is a gillian flynn book waiting to happen. — tries to be an enigma. wants to be mysterious and unreadable because that’s what books have taught her makes women desirable and interesting and cool. very amy dunne in the way she expertly reinvents herself to suit her audience, when she wants to impress
—  an incredibly talented dancer. she was accepted to juliard to study ballet, but after an injury to her foot she had to refuse her place, something that she’s incredibly bitter about. she went to princeton instead to study classics for a semester, before being expelled.
— alma comes from a family of high-end art dealers. while her parents paid her way into the school, that was mostly due to previous expulsions, not low intelligence. she’s incredibly intelligent but will only put in effort when she deems the cause worthy. she’s frustrating to teach, because she requires evidence, truth, in order to accept something as worthwhile. she plays devil’s advocate, but academically she’s brilliant.
—  she can recognise any renaissance artist just by their brush strokes. her aunt and uncle deal antiques and art, and from an internship with them after her expulsion from princeton, she learned how to market and sell art, how to recognise originals in contrast to fakes. from this, alma began to produce counterfeit art and sell it off as the original work to the contacts she had made in her internship. it’s disloyal, but it’s powerful.
— act like the flower but be the serpent under it. is a user. manipulative. leads people on. will throw another student under the bus to demonstrate her own intelligence and integrity — heavily involved in the theatre society. loves attention. — has an addictive personality. seems unable to do anything in a small dose, she has to let it utterly consume her. with sports, she’s fiercely competitive, runs track, played lacrosse at school, now is a cheerleader probably. with alcohol, it’s never a shot, it’s a whole bottle – wine or whiskey – she’ll be table dancing before the night’s up and making out with someone she’ll regret in the morning.
— her clothing style is like…. vintage thrift store but make it preppy. berets and cute hats, neck scarves, large fluffy cardigans or like those leathery jackets with big suede fringes on them, mini skirts (very 70s), and knee-high socks or boots. quite often she’ll be in sports kit, maybe a cute tennis skirt, n when she’s feeling casual she’ll wear like, a talking heads tshirt with a pair of mom jeans and converse, but otherwise, the library is her catwalk. — relates to ophelia from hamlet and sibyl vane in dorian gray. weirdly obsessed with women who commit suicide. loves jackson pollock paintings and abstract art. – likes old things. old books, old music, old houses, it reminds her of happier times like when she wasn’t alive. buys all her music on vinyl and has a gramophone because “the sound quality is better” kfdsjj.
plots.
here are some generic wanted plots but by all means message me so we can flesh them out more if any strike ur interest:
study buddies !! someone who is equally unprepared and so spends all night in the library with alma before a big deadline, maybe they even met in the library
if they’re from new england or vermont, then cousins . second cousins / extended family / family friends –  probably spat volavons on your character once as children, omg childhood friends !
honestly someone who is fully in love with her or crushing on her that she can just break would be sweet :/ or on the other hand someone she unexpectedly gets feelings for and actually wants to guage her own  eyeballs out bc of it
frinds !! unlikely friends !! toxic friends !! former best friends separated by sporting or academic rivalries !
hockey / cheer friends who are on other teams but who she absolutely loves playin against!!!
fellow academics who like meeting up to discuss latin and greek ! gimme a secret society bonding by their love of ancient learning
i reckon she’s in a lot of societies, definitely the film club, maybe works as a projectionist at the uni cinema if they have one so give me ppl affiliated with that, give me fellow wanky pretentious art-lovers and poets and historians who will go to museums and galleries with her and listen to the velvet underground on vinyl
people she gets mortally fucked off her tits with at parties
people who think she is throwing her academic potential away by caving to hedonistic impulse
a secret society !!! honestly i would die for a slug club esque thing in which the children of notable families are invited to dinners or alma’s also an art forger, so maybe like a club of students set up to basically forge paintings and documents from the university special collections
people she has drunkenly made out with, hooked up with, or regularly sleeps with casually, maybe even a friend w benefits she is repressing feelings for, i love angst,
people she used to date or unrequitedly likes, but to them it’s just a physical thing, give me all the thirsty angst plots, and maybe some softness too, i need some religion in this girls life, she is a roman catholic after all
full biography.
alma olive putnam.
intro.
the girl is a knife. razor-sharp, double-edged, the bright shine of a two-faced, lovely thing. silver like the secrets you magpie thief from other heads. you’re a scavenger of knowledge, of tidbits, of gossip to lock away for later use and late-night re-inspection. a mind is like a clock if you get to learn the pieces. bit by bit, you dismantle the inner workings of the brains that tick around you – how easy it is to change it’s path, how words and their meanings can make a person laugh or cry in an instant. to have the power to control that is to be a god. it’s the power trip you crave wielding pom-poms in your hands; a possessive need for control that a younger you, small and weak, never had as a child. small lips, smaller smile, a doll clutched in your too-hungry fingers, hard enough to shatter the bones of a real infant. you cut your hair with your mother’s kitchen scissors before the autumn falls, rendering you out of season, unfit for the cold weather that beats against the nape of your neck, where a stick-and-poke marks the star you were born under ; the bull. “mama, when will i be a queen?” as soon as they find a crown small enough not to slip from your head.
biography.
if you get hungry enough, they say, you start eating your own heart. hands red, stained by pomegranate seeds, the empty pulp of its shell splattered on your thighs you find yourself wondering – what would it be like to want? in the beginning, you never knew hunger. twins, born under the same star, you first, him second – a nuclear family. never a sister to compete with, you were always the cherry pie of your parents’ hearts. white-haired, blue-eyed, beautiful baby of mine. the townhouse in vermont and the summer house in lyon, you wanted for nought, showered with attention, saddled with gifts - hardly a wonder you came to rely on such affection as a confirmation of your own worth.
at eight years old you first met death, blood on a gingham-print dress, a smear of it over your cheekbone and the pulp of a mangled animal at your feet murdered by the hands of a stable boy. “alma, my precious baby, you get away from that filth,” your mama would cry from the upstairs balcony – cigar in one hand and a bloody mary in the other – though whether the filth she referred to was the dead pig or the boy with a kernel of corn in his mouth, you never did find out.
your family earned their keeps in farming, great-grandfather wolfgang hildegarde a german immigrant, great-grandmother maura lisbon a prairie girl. they fell hopelessly in love between troughs and pig-shit, working for three dollars a day at a farm their descendants would later own, trade deals with the indians, vacations to calcutta, your father todd putnam in the kind of sheepskin coat his father’s father could only dream of owning. he worked hard so that you’d never have to. your mama once asked – you heard it through the window, rounding cartwheels across the picket-fenced lawn – could he not find a respectable career rather than selling shrink-wrapped pork for a dime a dozen? that blood money had no business raising a child. you look far back enough, edie, your father had said in his low, strong voice that could bring a civil war to silence, and i think you’ll find that all money is blood money.
language was never fickle on your tongue, french dinner time talk by the time you were out of your hush puppy shoes, your mama fixing the au pair a smile as she fixed herself another martini. you learned the clarinet at four and how to dance with the grace of a swansong at six, ethereal under a spotlight, an audience captive in the palm of your hand. by eight you knew that you’d always been destined to be loved. loved so hard they would want to taste you, bite into the soft plump of your cheek and eat you alive. that was how magnetic you wanted to feel. but mother hamsters eat their own young when penned in together too long, and soon you became too wild, too restless, another package on your father’s delivery invoice, box-shipped out to english boarding school.
fitting in had never been something you had to concern yourself with. you were always the shiny new toy the other girls wanted to play with, bright like a dropped coin from a magpie’s beak. wherever you went, you seemed to leave a trail of awe, pig-tailed harriet’s adoring you, imitating you, teachers forgiving your class-time chatter for the sake of your wild heart and the restless spirit you possessed. tell us what it’s like in the states, alma. they’d coo, enamoured by your hollywood drawl. does your father own a gun? you hardly knew. barely even knew the colour of his hair, for the scarce amount of times he’d stoop to kiss your cheek, though you’d tell silver-tongued tales if it’d guaranteed you an audience. when you learned how to smile at the right times, and that flattery would get you everywhere, it soon became apparent that charm would pave the yellow brick road to success even when your lack of drive couldn’t.
the road you followed – gum-snapping, roller-blading, friendship bands all up your arm – eventually led you to sacred heart. bright-eyed and gingham skirted, you’d always known you were more. there was a hunger in you to be something extraordinary, a want so adamant to be imagined and desired that it was almost savage. in leather-bound volumes and a circle of stones, you were helen of troy, the girl for whom they’d launch a thousand ships. but there’s so much rage within you, collecting like sawdust in cavernous parts. hockey helped. there was something grounding about the feeling of a stick clasped in your hands. sweat. stiff knuckles. feet pounding the earth. the smash of wood against flesh in the scram of a game, passed off as mere enthusiasm. “slipped, sorry.” hockey is the one thing you had that was yours alone – a feral instinct that motivates you to play; something primitive within you that sparks an energy like no other. on the pitch, you feel alive. you feel like a god.

Lover track by track
SO. I’m currently out of the country and it took me awhile to finish this, but I’m sharing my thoughts for anyone who cares to read it. There’s SO much more to say and I wish it was better written because I like when words are nice and convey exactly what you want to say (I’m doing this all on my phone) but you get the general feel and that’s what’s important, the emotions. Come talk to me if you want!!!!
I tried to put a read more but I’m not sure if I can on mobile? Because mobile is its own special nightmare so I’m soRRY
I Forgot That You Existed | The way this song starts (and the whole thing) reminds me a lot of a Lauv song. Something about it just does. It’s a wonderful start to the album, I think, because it IS her moving on, but it isn’t yet the level of “step into the daylight and let it go.” It’s the first step; it’s realizing that not everyone deserves a place in your life, but closer to Reputation than other songs on the album (like the “so... yeah” which I LOVE but, I think, has a slightly different attitude than she ends with). I love her delivery of different lines in this song; you can hear the freedom in her comments, giggles, and speaking.
Cruel Summer | I saw a post that said fans of “Getaway Car” would like this one and I GET IT now. It’s inexplicably tied to that song in my mind, something about the production and melody and everything, even the ending on the third beat. And I love it. One thing I’ve missed about pre-1989 is her lyrics; not to say any album of hers doesn’t have insanely clever and meaningful lyrics (because they all do), but I think there is just something so incredible about her Speak Now and Red lyrics especially. It’s part of why pop music in general isn’t my main genre. But this early on and I knew Lover was everything I have ever wanted in a pop album. “Taylor Swift” is its own genre, and will always be my favorite genre, but this song just... so perfectly marries her older songwriting with her newer song production. Her voice when she calls him a devil oh my that was god tier I swear—and lines like “devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes” and “in these trying times we’re not trying” are so clever and akdjslsjsk I love Taylor Alison Swift.
Lover | She mentioned that the album was almost called Daylight and even though I might’ve preferred that (lover is still not my favorite word), I’m so happy that “Lover” is the, as she calls it, flagship song. There is a palpable warmth and security in the tone of the song, and you can hear her smile as she sings. She is in love—a real, steadfast, quiet love. A love that isn’t composed of extraordinary moments that her younger self fantasized about in songs, but of little details and daily routines and the way love’s presence pervades every aspect of life.
The Man | Ugh she IS a fearless leader, she IS the alpha type—to write a song with as much BDE as this you have to be. She is the shit and she knows it, and I love the lyrics and vocabulary of the song! Like how she talks about being able to separate behavior from ideas and accomplishments or actions from character—it’s such a difficult thing to really work into a song as seamlessly as she does. Also, THE BRIDGE. Holy moly. I think it’s one of my favorite bridges on the album. I had no idea how badly I needed to hear her say “bitch” like this. I love her.
The Archer | I SEE RIGHT THROUGH ME! I SEE RIGHT THROUGH ME!!!! Also, the transition into “you could stay...” is just so beautiful. And I think it’s such an interesting choice that she doesn’t end it there, that she goes back to combat. It echoes what she says in “I Forgot That You Existed,” that she would’ve fought the whole town for them. She’s opening herself up to someone new and asking them to stay, but saying that if they do, she’s ready to fight for this love.
I Think He Knows | “Boy, I understand.” That’s it that’s the whole tweet. (Not). But also the snaps and “we can follow the sparks, I’ll drive” is just ?!?!!! Mind blowing. She’s incredible.
Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince | Okay... this was the most unexpected love for me, even though I know titles don’t mean anything, I was so surprised how much I love this one. I love the “okay!” and the way she yells different words, it really echoes the sounds of a high school sports game and that’s just so smart because that’s the theme of this song. I don’t know it’s just SO GOOD. And there are some really heartbreaking lyrics (“you are the only one who seems to care,” “no cameras catch my pageant smile/muffled cries”) where you just get this sense of loneliness and fear and in its own way it reminds me of “Safe and Sound,” when she says “don’t you dare look out your window.” The five of this song feels like her holding her lover’s hand and running behind him with their heads down through the storm of a high school hallways—“now the storm is coming but it’s you and me, that’s my whole world.”
Paper Rings | For whatever reason, this song gives me major “The Middle” vibes. I saw someone say that it’s “‘Stay Stay Stay’ 2.0” and it makes it even more adorable because then she was daydreaming about real love again... and now she’s here. The prechorus is everything, so much of this album has left me incoherent with its sheer perfection and genius honestly it’s so hard to comprehend... her MIND. It’s so cute I hate I can’t believe I literally could cry and also there’s one part where she says “I’m with YOU!” and it made me think she’s saying “YOU!” in the way she says “ME!” with that pure celebration and joy and loving him because he’s the only one of him, too. I’m with YOU like ME also that sigh and how she says she wants ALL of it, the complications and dreary Mondays and to have him in ALL her dreams, good, bad, and in-between. Just like she wants his midnights... she wants all the midnight moments, the celebrations, the magic... but ALSO wants to be around for absolutely everything, cleaning up bottles on New Year’s Day. The everyday, quiet moments of companionship.
Cornelia Street | Oh... this one is surprisingly hard for me to listen to. When I first heard “Lover,” I brought up this Brené Brown quote about rehearsing tragedy—she talks about how joy is the most vulnerable emotion we experience. It’s so hard to immerse ourselves in joy because of how fragile it feels (she says it more eloquently), and that’s where this song hits for me. “Lover” is her being able to experience joy and contentment and let go of the need to prepare for the worst while “Cornelia Street” references the pull to dress rehearse tragedy. The song captures the risk of opening up to happiness, love, joy, any good feeling... because how could you survive if you lose that? Isn’t it better if you never feel so deeply and don’t have to worry about what’ll happen if you lose it? And she talks about that fear, about not wanting to open up and risk being hurt or made a fool of when she says she left Cornelia Street... but then he showed his hand (don’t even get me started on that line oh my heart). That song walks that delicate line of not dress rehearsing tragedy, but really conveying the vulnerability in finding any kind of love. And I love that she ties it to a street, to this concrete place that is nothing spectacular but for her is associated with her most cherished memories. Because that’s the other thing about love and loss—it’s not only extraordinary moments that matter. Love touches every part of your life.
Death by a Thousand Cuts | What a METAPHOR. Like holy shit. “Flashbacks waking me up,” “looking through the windows,” “can’t pretend it’s okay when it’s not.” It’s death by a thousand cuts. It’s prolonged and painful and persistent. It lingers. Ugh her MIND is just so brilliant and I feel so lucky that I happen to be alive at the same time as her? Like how wild is that???? “Paper cut stings from my paper thin plans” is so clever?? The way she says “lawless” is so good???? And the LONELINESS of asking a traffic light if it will be alright... of hoping for a sign, any kind of sign. And rather than saying she found comfort or affirmation, she says their answer was “I don’t know.” The courage and loneliness and fear and heartbreak of living with that uncertainty... this is So Much™
London Boy | This song is so Pure 🥺 Like... that’s it that’s the song it’s so fucking cute and simple and sweet, using all these London terms... it is Soft and Pure there is no other way to describe this song.
Soon You’ll Get Better | I knew as soon as I heard about this song that it would be one of my favorites because it’s just who I am... but this song is so beautiful and reminds me of her older work because of how simple the production is. I think a lot of why I love this song is the same as why I love “You Learn to Live Without” and my analysis would be similar—the chorus is so simple and repetitive because she’s repeating it to herself, to her family, to anyone. “You’ll get better soon... because you have to.” It’s like telling someone, promising them, that it’ll be okay; you can’t know, you can’t ever know. But sometimes you say it because you have to. Because there’s no other option. In “You Learn to Live Without,” it’s a similar situation... almost every line starts with what “you learn” how to do. It’s repetitive and she relies on that when she falters. It feels like there’s no way to survive such a devastating loss, but you learn, because you have to. There’s no other option. The song is so simple and the lyrics are everything that makes Taylor Swift music so special. Personal, specific, and yet relatable in, even because of, its specificity. You can hear her shaky breaths, which is always devastating. The bridge took my breath away because I’ve expressed those exact feelings before, and it hurts my heart that she’s felt it but it also is why I love her so much, because it connects so deeply.
False God | Going from “Soon You’ll Get Better” to this is a LOT (to be fair, anything would be) but it also reminds me of desperation and makes sense in that way—how you turn to anything at all, even a false god, if it will help you make it through. And that line about daring him to leave her... what a mood. But also bless Joe Alwyn. Also we neED TO TALK ABOUT THE FLAWLESS TRANSITION INTO YNTCD THAT WAS SO SATISFYING HER M I N D.
You Need to Calm Down | The “oh-oh” totally gets to me because when she was about 12-14 months, my focal child used to go “uh-oh” in almost the exact same way, so I always hear it in her voice. I love these lyrics because they’re just... so fun?? To shout???? And SHADE NEVER MADE ANYBODY LESS GAY SO
Afterglow | I had no idea what to expect from this song, but I love it. The connection she makes about fighting because there’s “chemistry until it blows” is so good because then you can really picture and understand what she means when she says “meet me in the afterglow.” It’s the quiet after the storm, when things are calm and hazy and you can take a step back and reflect. You can truly listen. And if you stay, like she asks him to, you can survive it. You may even have a stronger relationship because of it. And she wrote this song about taking responsibility and the messy parts of a relationship and how hard it is when you hurt someone you love and it’s just so beautiful that she allows us into this process, all the messy and flawed lessons in learning how to heal and forgive and love.
ME! | I’m so proud of her for reaching this point because it’s true, she’s the only one of her. There will never be another Taylor Swift... her incredible ability to write songs, to make music, to connect, her generosity, her love, everything about her... she is SO special.
It’s Nice to Have a Friend | I’m going to give this one a little more time because I love the idea of the song, the lyrics, the simplicity, but I need more time to really decide how I feel.
Daylight | This song makes me so emotional in the way I always get when I listen to “Call It What You Want” and hear how happy she is, she’s doing better than she ever was... she’s so happy and I love her so much and this is all I wanted for her agh but also this song, what a beautiful song. “I’ll tell you the truth but never goodbye” is just... unconditional love. I’m in love with the way she sings “daylight,” it echoes the entire song. Something about it is just lighter, louder in a soft, airy, ethereal way. It gets lighter, like you can hear it take on the quality of daylight. There’s so many things calling it back to old songs, too. I kept thinking about “this love is glowing in the dark” because this song is about how love, true love, is golden like daylight. It glows. And how she’s been sleeping in the darkest, longest night, but now all she sees is daylight. This love glows in the dark and glows so bright that it overcomes it. And then she so explicitly calls back to “Red” and how she used to think love would be burning red, but she’s realized instead that it’s golden. Red love is so fiery and passionate in all its emotions, and the idea of something being fiery means that it could, occasionally, be golden, when it’s glowing bright. But that’s an intense golden... this golden is soft. Ethereal is the best word I have for it. She sings of golden daylight, and this song is that—daylight. It’s true gold; it isn’t burning red because it’s softer. It’s warmth, not heat. It’s contentment, it’s quiet, it’s safety, it’s trust, it’s reconciliation. It’s illuminating, but not blinding. I just... this song is bursting with warmth and softness and light and I can’t get over it or put it into better words.
tl;dr I love Taylor Swift with my whole heart and Lover is simply incredible and, quite frankly, THAT bitch. 💘💕✨

THANK YOU TAYLOR!
I don’t think any music has ever spoken to me then this album. i’ve never been in a relationship but the lyrics are beautiful and it’s just makes me speechless.
First of all the line “He likes my American smile, like a child when our eyes meet” 🥺💞 This is beautiful and I love it because i’m a first generation American in my family bc the rest of my fam is from Pakistan and idk but it gives me hope and happiness i guess. Because i’m always told how American I am by my family and how I need to start speaking urdu and how i seem snobby and all thsi stuff that makes me kind of insecure about my American style and I guess i’m making this line deeper than it is but Taylor you have no idea how much it means to me.
Also okay the lyric “you are what you love” is amazing. idk if i was just being over dramatic but it was definitely true 🤧 when i started almost (actually) crying if happiness becaus ur hate being told the things i’m not and the things i don’t like bc i don’t wanna be defined that way 😞 I just want to be defined by the things I love liek YOU and reading and coffe and pink and so much more ❤️
Okay and then Paper Rings is just so beautiful and fun and i love it. it’s got a theme song vibe and i love thattttt 😻👏 I love all of that song it’s just amazing 🤪👍👏
And then “step into the daylight and let it go” is just a perfect ‘no bad vibes allowed” kinda vibe 😂 it’s just this relaxing that makes me feel happy and calm bc we all gotta just calm down 😌 I hate taking stress and it feels nice to just walk out into the daylight and let it go 😍
In Cruel Summer I love “Devils are the dice and angels role their eyes” also the “looks up grinning like a devil” IS THE ABSOLYTW BEST! and just so much of that song is like this pastel, rainbow darkness 😂 It reminds me of “darling Ima nightmare dressed like a daydream” It’s a beautiful song 💞
The Man is just 👍👍🤠 LIKE YESSSSS WOMEN! Taylor is THE WOMAN! she’s a queeeen 👑👑👑 WAIT SHES THE CAT! @taylorswift let’s quit being man or woman and let’s just all be CATS 🐱
I’m I Forgot You Existed I love “It isn’t love, it isn’t hate, it’s just indifference” I luv that so much because sometimes you just have to forget, let it go and be i different 😌
Death By a Thousand Cuts is just amzing and beautiful 🤧💕 “saying goodbye is death by a thousand cuts” i think i loves this mostly bc i’m usually known in my family as the one who cries when a family member leaves after visiting. And it feels like death by a thousand cuts bc i don’t know when i’ll see them cuz my fam lives around the world. basically i just don’t like goodbyes 😭
(ik this isn’t going in order it’s just what i think of on the spot)
I loved Afterglow so much because it was about accepting the blame and asking for forgiveness and i think that’s beautiful 😻
I think he knows is liek this cute song you can skip through the neighborhood with ☺️👏💕 i love it, i’ve never been in a relationship so i can’t relate much but i stilll absolutely love it!
Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince is like this high school story and it’s reallllly amazing i loveee it zjjzjssj! I love the cheering and also how you say “It’s you and me, that’s my whole world” and i love that because i hate it when people change their ways because of someone else whispering. for me it’s just me and the people i love, that’s my whole world 🌎.
Cornelia Street I LOVE! i think bc of my tripp ti nyc this summer, i’ve been loveing ny so much. Thanks to WTNY i fell in love with the place. And the lyrics are so beautiful and relaxing. It’s like listening to starry and i love itttt! I love how it’s a song about nostalgia about a place bc i miss nyc. i was there for 2 days but i cried when i had to leave. it’s amazing and wonderful and magical.
Soon you’ll get better is giving me Safe and Spund vibes. it’s so sad and beautiful. i’m a muslim is some of the lyrics don’t relate to me but itssss beautiful i love ittt! “ cuz you have to” is so heartbreaking but so trueeeeee!
Ok False God was the “Ohhh 🤭” song of this album. Like dress “the altar is my hips” but i think my fave lyrics is “Hell is when i fight with you” because we all have that relationship (any kind) that we don’t wanna ever fight in. and that whole verse is amazing and i love it because it speaks to me. i also love “I’m New York City” because I LOVE NYC AND NOW TAYLOR ISSSS NYC 🤯💃👑!!!! YEET
I LOVE ITS NICE TO HAVE A FRIEND! This is basically a PASTEL TOY STORY 😂💞 I LOVE THISSSSS bc it’s a friendship song, and it’s amazinggggggg! i love this new friendship song and it’s just so sweet and cute ☺️😻❤️
okay so now for the singlessss!
LOVER is JAHAJSJSJAJSJS! ITS JUST THAT! like it’s so beautiful and amazing and romanticcccccc! The bridge is amaizng i love it it’s my favorite part it’s like Vows and it’s just so sweeeeet!!!!! 😻😻👏 and omg the “dirty joke” in the me is 😂😂😂
ME! is always gonna be iconic i’m just really sad that the “HEY KIDS SPELLING IS FUN” was taken out bc my friend and i were obsessed with that😂 SWIFTIES WE GOTTA YELL IT OUT DURING THE TOURR!
also for ME! @ all the haters about it, this song was supposed to be fun and cheerful and it started the hunt for easter eggs and it was the beginning so to anyone who was saying that it was getting boring or whatever. be thankful cuz this album was def worth the wait
YNTCD is 🤪👏👏👏🤪🤪🤪👏 I use that line everyday like u have no idea 😂 and now i have an album if things i could sayyyyyy! alll these singles are iconic and this is amazinggggggg 👌
The Archer is like the best thing ever! LIKE ITS TRACK 5?!!!! sijsjsk! It’s so vulnerable and true and i’m so happy we have it 🤧❤️ it made me cry bc it’s so metaphorical that it can connect with anyone 💕💕💕
OKAY BUT IN ALL! All the music is great and everything but you know what’s even greater? TAYLOR OWNS IT ALLLL! She’s her own company and some how that is everything! I’m sooo sssooo sooo happy that this is her first own album and she finally happy and in this amazing place. like everyone’s always complaining about watch out for taylor or she’ll write a song about you BUT if u treat her with respect and love she’ll write and album dedicated to you 🤧😍 (and the best songs of rep). This whole album is Taylor’s and it can rule the world! 💃 like literally it has a song for all the good people of the world 😌 like lyrics anyone can connect whether u have a love life or not this album is for everyone and it’s owned by the one and only taylor. Taylor i can’t thank you enough ever for sharing this absolute masterpiece with us, it’s so raw and true and vulnerable but you’re giving it to us to protect and cherish. i love it and a i LOVE(R) you TAYLOR 😘😘👏

Lover Review
I Forgot That You Existed
This song resonates with me so much. I feel like I never think about my ex and when I do I’m like wow I forgot about you. She literally took the words right out of my mind and the beat is so perfect for it because you want to be so happy when you remember something that you thought would hurt you but doesn’t 10/10
Cruel Summer
HE LOOKS UP GRINNING LIKE A DEVIL oh my god I actually sob when she says that line because it just puts me in a mood I can’t explain. The first time I heard it I wasn't like totally on board with it but it grew on me so fast I want to sway fast in the living room and scream it at the top of my lungs 10/10
Lover
my wedding song 10/10
The Man
Holy shit Taylor you really did it didn’t you. This song could be your biggest hit and I’ll never stop bopping to it, it was the perfect time for this song. The deep voice she has in the song is everything we ever needed 10/10
The Archer
I fully believe this is the most vulnerable song she has ever written, whether it be about how she feels about her relationship or even the way she sees herself we can all relate to it and how we have this sense of doubt in ourselves and if the other person can see it wow 10/10
I Think He Knows
Catch me strutting down the hallway of my house to this song, gives me a little more of a sped up version of wildest dreams if that makes any sense at all and the chorus makes me feel like I’m dancing in 13 going on 30 or something with my friends or should be playing while I couch surf in Princess Diaries 2 i don’t even understand either 10/10
Miss Americana and The Heartbreak Prince
So Lana Del Rey its insane like I just imagine the visuals on tour for this are going to be out of this world. I feel like I should be dancing to this song in the woods slowing leaning on trees and peeking out while I sing 10/10
Paper Rings
This reminds me so so so much of Kesha’s album Rainbow, specifically Let Em Talk and I absolutely love it. I get a really good 60s dancing vibe exactly like she does in the ME! video. If I get pulled over in the next few weeks it will be from my lack of dance moves in the car on my way home from work. But I will say when she says “you’re the one I want” all quiet near the end, do not ask me why but it reminds me of when John Mulaney says “I know you don’t drink” in his New In Town Stand up but for real this is THE hairbrush song 10/10
Cornelia Street
I don’t think there are even words to fully explain how incredible of a song this is. wow. The way this song starts makes me feel like I’m going to be watching my favorite romcom that always makes me cry and believe that love actually exists. I am the most excited to hear this on tour. Its one I could see her floating across the stadium to while I sob, My roommate also thinks she should be saying “I never want Cornelia Street to end” and now thats all I sing too 100000/10
Death By A Thousand Cuts
The beginning of this song reminds me of a horror film but i love horror films and thats how I knew I stanned this song before the lyrics even began. I felt that looking at the lyrics that I was going to be a slow sad song but I’m so glad its upbeat like AYHTDWS. it’s literally her older, wiser sister. I also love the pinball wizard type piano in the back. BRIDGE CITY BITCH BRIDGE BRIDGE CITY BITCH 13/10
London Boy
If you don’t think every single picture I post next summer in London won’t be from this song you’re CRAZY. The best way to listen to this song would be with some heart sunglasses on, windows down, driving at night and I can’t tell you why, you just have to do it. It’s the most fun on this album and reminds me of how I felt about Gorgeous 10/10
Soon You’ll Get Better
The absolute most personal song Taylor has ever released. This was something so hard for her to do but she also knows how many of her fans go through similar things and this allows them to feel a little closer to her and knowing they aren’t going through it all alone. It just makes me hold my loved one’s even closer every day 10/10
False God
This song gives me such So It Goes vibes and I feel like its not going to get justice on tour just like she didn’t. It’s so different than a lot other other songs and I think it incorporates every type of pop song in one which is absolutely incredible to me. 10/10
You Need To Calm Down
This is my new Shake It Off. The way Shake It Off could automatically put me in a better mood, now YNTCD does it. This song opened up so many people’s eyes to the album and how it’s much more than the first single. Hearing this live at GMA did something to me and just made me so happy and I can’t believe I’ll get to hear it at tour. It just makes me so happy. 10/10
Afterglow
I get really good, Bad Liar vibes from this. i think I say this because I don’t think I’ve heard a song like this in a long time and I was kind of confused of how no one thought of it before, just like how I felt when Selena released Bad Liar. This song is always stuck in my head and I hope it never leaves. 10/10
ME!
Definitely a really good intro single for the album. I honestly don’t think any other song could’ve done well enough for the introduction of Lover tot he world than ME! It just is such a good self love song. It also gave us our lord and savior Benjamin Button 10/10
It’s Nice To Have A Friend
This is the perfect song for a rainy day, sitting on the porch, watching people walk up and down the street. So simple yet delicate and can definitely put tears in my eyes. I really like that theres not a chorus or a change in the beat, the trumpets in the middle is so unique and makes me feel like its just a regular day in the life as taylor 10/10
Daylight
By far the best album closer. As if the other songs don’t scream that Taylor is happy and in love, this one does the most. The line that stuck with me the most is “I once believed love would be burning red but its golden” because she thought she was in love so many times and thought it was the real thing that would last because it was red to her. She saw the different color of love and how even though it wasn’t what she thought it would be, it was the real thing. I’m just so impressed with this album. Taylor always thought that she couldn’t write a song like Tenerife Sea and here we are with some of the most incredible, raw, heartwarming lyrics of any artist. She did it. 10/10

Psychomania
MST3K featured some British movies; they had a couple of zombie movies; and they did way too many biker movies.  So here is a British zombie biker movie, because of course that exists.  I don’t think anybody in it was ever on MST3K except for Rocky Taylor, who was an extra in Gorgo, but director Don Sharp did make a couple of Fu Manchu movies and you know my stance on those.  And if you’re interested, the butler is George Sanders, who sounds familiar because he was the voice of Shere Khan in the original Jungle Book.
The Living Dead are a biker gang I just cannot take seriously, mostly because their helmets look so much like something Kinga’s Boneheads would wear.  Leader Tom is obsessed by the idea of becoming one of the undead.  He’s pretty sure his mother – a psychic who holds seances in her incredibly mod dining room – and her ageless butler know something about it, and tricks them into revealing the secret.  The next day he commits suicide, but he’s back soon after, encouraging his friends to join him in zombiehood.  One by one they off themselves in spectacular fashion, but Tom’s girlfriend Abby wakes up in the hospital instead of the morgue, and realizes this is madness.  How can she take on an entire zombie biker gang all by herself, though?
Tumblr media
Spoiler time: she can’t.  Tom’s mom casts a spell that turns them all to stone, Abby has a nervous breakdown, and I guess the butler was the devil the whole time.  It sucks.
Weirdly, I’m one of the few people who seems to think so.  This movie has an eighty percent on Rotten Tomatoes and has been described with words like ‘effective’ and ‘tightly-knit’.  I have no idea what drugs the people who said that were on, because it is definitely neither of those.  As crummy movies go it’s pretty coherent and you do care about Abby, who is the nearest thing to a heroine (although Tom is closer to being a POV character), but the plot is dumb and the zombies are about the least interesting undead I’ve ever seen in a movie.
I’m gonna keep calling the revenant bikers ‘zombies’ but they don’t rot or eat brains, so it’s mostly for lack of a better word.  You’d think being undead would come with both powers and drawbacks, but this seems to involve neither.  They can’t die, and they may or may not have super-strength (I can’t tell), but other than that they’re exactly the same as they were when alive.  Undead bikers walk into churches and wander around in broad daylight with no problem.  They can apparently still eat and drink, although I guess they don’t have to. They’re not even cold to the touch… in fact, when Abby pretends for a while to be a zombie, it turns out even they can’t tell the difference between the living and the undead!
Tom’s mom is delighted to see him back from the dead but when the others start joining him she freaks out, saying it’s evil. I think it was okay when he did it because he had a magic toad amulet to protect him and his friends didn’t, but exactly what the difference is and what it means for them, we’re never told.  If they’ve lost their souls or whatever, we don’t hear about it.  They don’t seem to be any more callous assholes than they were when they were alive. Nor do we learn anything about the locked room where Tom’s father died, even though it sounds like it’s gonna be a big plot point.  There’s a flashback in which Tom’s mother sells him to the devil but that doesn’t seem to relate to anything much.
Tumblr media
Based on the setup, I figured Abby would eventually go to Tom’s mother for help and the two of them would defy the satanic butler end the zombies’ reign of terror together, but no.  Instead, the Mom’s getting off her ass to do something about the situation is prompted by Tom’s decision to murder all the police officers and teachers in the country, and it’s the butler who helps her with what she does… which makes no sense after it’s been repeatedly implied that he’s the devil!  The ending we get is one in which Abby’s life is saved by mere coincidence, and it feels like a cop-out.
Toads are a motif of sorts in the movie. There’s the toad amulet Tom carries for protection, and the satanic butler wears a toad ring.  There’s also a toad that Tom catches at the beginning and that the butler seems to keep as a pet until Tom’s mom uses it in her dark ritual at the end, when she turns into a toad as a punishment for breaking her pact with the devil.  It’s obvious that toads are supposed to be connected with evil, but exactly how the symbolism works here is never clear.  I kept wondering if the explanations were cut to fit the time slot… but then I remind myself that this wasn’t actually on MST3K.
I’m equally confused about what we’re supposed to think of the bikers.  The only time we really see them out of their leather jackets and bonehead helmets is when they’re holding their own funeral for Tom – and it’s a pretty hippy-dippy funeral for a bunch of death metal bikers, too.  They all wear bright colours and make flower wreaths to throw into the grave, which doesn’t exactly make them seem like murderous psychopaths. Tom’s the only one who has any prior interest in suicide, and it seems odd that they’d all just hop to killing themselves when they know there’s a chance they won’t have enough ‘faith’ to rise again.  None of them regret it.  I guess why would they, when the difference between ‘alive’ and ‘dead’ is minimal.
Tumblr media
Some of the badass bikers go by have nicknames like Hatchet, Gash, and Hinky.  The others use their own names, like Tom, Abby, and Bertram.  Yep, Bertram.
The very concept of zombie bikers is one that seems to call for excess, for wild stunts and body parts strewn across the screen, for dark rituals or people losing arms in accidents and then just stapling them back on.  There is absolutely none of that in Psychomania, and it’s weirdly indecisive about the violence it does show. There’s a scene where Tom begins to strangle a barfly, and the bit where a truck rolls down a hill and explodes in a huge fireball, but actual deaths are kept tastefully offscreen (there is a pretty neat shot in which three murders are hidden by a pan around the room, but it stands out as a ‘neat shot’ rather than a storytelling device) and I don’t think I saw a drop of blood or heard a single swear word in the entire movie. Although there was a scene in which one of the bikers pulls up and parks next to a ‘no parking’ sign.
Tumblr media
Almost the entire movie is shot outdoors on sunny days, in bright 60’s technicolour, which has killed the mood of many a horror movie of this vintage.  Tom even emerges from his grave in broad daylight, where any self-respecting undead abomination would surely wait for nightfall!  Also, oddly, it seems to take Tom way longer to resurrect than it did his friends.  They woke up in the morgue, before their autopsies even began, while he had time for a whole funeral.  Is there a reason for this?  I have no idea.
I have to admit, there’s some fairly nice choreography (car-eography?) in some of the scenes where the bikers disrupt traffic. There’s also a pretty cool use of mirrors while Tom explores the locked room, although as I mentioned, that’s rendered ultimately pointless.  The hallucination Abby has after her overdose is okay, too – it presents on the one hand the potential eternity with the man she loves, and on the other the horror she will visit upon her family through her suicide, and it’s quite a bit clearer about that than just about anything else in the movie.
The fact that Abby chooses an overdose as her way to die is telling.  The others all choose far more spectacular methods: motorcycle crashes, leaping out a window or off a bridge, drowning in a river.  These are all events that will definitely kill or maim, things there are no turning back from, while an overdose can be treated with minimal ill effects if it’s caught in time.  This goes with what she tells Tom later – she doesn’t really want to die.  She wants to be saved, and so she is (although who found her and got her to the hospital is another thing we never find out).
I guess this is a movie about the romanticization of suicide.  Tom wants to make a suicide pact with Abby so that they can be together forever, and the song performed at his funeral is all about how death is better than being a law-abiding member of society!  Unfortunately, there’s only the most minimal attempt to deal with a suicide’s effect on loved ones, and besides Tom, none of them seem to bother contacting anybody else they knew while alive.  The story does make the point, with Abby’s reluctance, that suffering is temporary but suicide is forever, yet the lack of consequences or limitations on the zombies means there’s no real force behind it.  Free spirited types are known to describe others as ‘zombies’, and inverting this into them being literal zombies could have been cool, but it wasn’t.  The whole movie feels like everybody was too shy to take it far enough.
As a final note, I am obsessed with the set design in Tom’s mother’s house, which is the only thing here that really counts as outrageous.  She’s got one wall painted with a nebula and another with a giant geometric fish.  The latter looks like something you find in bits at the Goodwill and buy even though you have nowhere to put it, and it steals every shot it’s in.  I want to knit a sweater with it as a motif.  Hands-down, the best thing in the whole movie.

Some major stan points in Lover
They way she says “it isn’t love it isn’t hate it’s just ~indifference~”
“Devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes” is SO bleachers and I am here for it.
Why do I feel like Taylor is exactly the person who would “cry like a baby coming home from the bar” because same.
“I don’t want to keep secrets just to keep you.” HURTS in more ways than one.
When Taylor says “swear to be overdramatic” I know she’s telling the truth and I love her for it.
“Wondering if I’d get there quicker if I was a man.” Relatable.
“IF I WAS OUT FLASHING MY DOLLARS I’D BE A BITCH NOT A BALLER” girl go off!!
But seriously hearing Taylor use the nasty words men call her to call them out is such a power move.
I still think The Archer is her song relating to Game of Thrones
“He’s so ObSeSseD with mE and BOI I understand.” Taylor we all understand too.
The way she paints the metaphor of high school to depict her fame is STELLAR.
Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince voteD most likely to WIN GRAMMYS...
Why does this song remind me of an early 2000s boy band???
“When you jumped in first I jumped in too.” So Taylor if your bf jumped off a cliff would you too??
Cornelia Street is a type of heartbreak I relate to way too much for someone who has never once been in love before...
Come to think of it I can’t relate to a single SONG on this album because I’m forever alone.
Death By A Thousand Cuts just takes you straight to bridge city like damn.
“M wINE” Because Taylor apparently is very protective of her wine.
“I ask the traffic lights if it will be alright” aka actively looking for signs that things will be okay after heartbreak is real and it hURTs
“I loOvEE SooOoCaAAaaLL”
Lol this SoCal girl loved that for me.
London Boy just makes me laugh so much like TAYLOR WHY ARE YOU EXPOSING ME.
Like she’s literally out here living my celebrity crush fantasies.
“Because you have to.” Is like a thousand daggers to the heart.
False God is literally bar music lmao Taylor I sEE yOu giRl
Not to @ anyone but say it in a tweet that’s a cop out.
Afterglow is Taylor being like okay “mAyBE I’M thE pRobLeM” at the haters lol.
“You’ve been stressed out lately YEAH ME TOO”
“I want to be defined by the things that I love.”

LOVER IS INCREDIBLE
TS7 snapped I AM SO GIDDY AND HAPPY AND PROUD OF YOU @taylorswift
I forgot that you existed: LOVE THIS ONE! a great opening song omg !!! the way she speaks the word “indifference”. i think it’s just perfection, and the beat is SICK. THE WAY SHE CLOSES THE SONG WITH A “SO..... YEAH”
favorite lyric: “and i would’ve stuck around for you. would’ve fought the whole town, so yeah. would’ve been right there, front row even if nobody came to your show” THAT IS SO RELATABLE WHEN YOU ~WOULD HAVE~ BEEN THERE FOR SOMEONE BUT THEY HAD TO FUCK UP.
cruel summer: ONE OF MY FAVORITES! the perfect pop song, i wish it had been the lead single or the second single. her vocals are incredible. the lyrics are so good i am literally so in love, she did it again, mesmerized me with her lyricism !!!
favorite lyric: (literally the entire bridge but) “and i screamed for whatever it’s worth “i love you”, ain’t that the worst thing you’ve ever heard?” ALSO HONORABLE MENTION TO THE HE LOOKS UP GRINNING LIKE A DEVIL LINE PLS !!!! AND TO “devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes. what doesn’t kill me makes me want you more”
lover: WE KNOW THIS ONE! STILL PERFECT! MY WEDDING SONG EVEN THOUGH I AM SINGLE! I WANT TO FALL IN LOVE JUST TO RELATE!
favorite lyric: THE ENTIRE BRIDGE OH MY GOD !!!
the man: THIS IS MY FAVORITE ONE 100% SHE SPILLED !!! i am so proud of her for making this song that not only is it something she can relate to because of how women are treated in the industry BUT ALL WOMEN CAN RELATE TO BECAUSE SOCIETY SUCKS ALL AROUND THE WORLD !!!! and “wondering if i’d get there quicker if i was a man” can also apply to 9 to 5 jobs that are really competitive and for some reason the men always get the positions of power no matter what we do lmao. ANYWAYS I LOVE IT SO MUCH IT’S PERFECT!
favorite lyric: (all of it but) THE ENTIRE BRIDGE! AGAIN! “what’s it like to brag about drinking and dollars and getting bitches and models? (...) if i was out flashing my dollars, i’d be a bitch not a baller, they’d paint me out to be bad SO IT’S OKAY THAT I’M MAD” GIRL !!!!!! THIS TEA !!!!!! i am so proud of her :’) also i love the line “i’d be just like leo in saint tropez” because she has dated like a normal person in their twenties but somehow got slut shamed for it her entire career BUT IF SHE WAS A MAN SHE WOULD LITERALLY BE LEO AT SAINT TROPEZ NO ONE WOULD SAY A GODDAMN THING AND IT WOULD EVEN BE FUN !!!! AND SOMETHING TO APPLAUD HER FOR !!!!!
the archer: have always loved this one wbk <3 so relatable, so vulnerable, i love it still and forever will.
favorite lyric: “all the king’s horses, all the king’s men, couldn’t put me together again. cause all of my enemies started out friends” literally the most heartbreaking thing ever. and i feel for her. having friends become enemies is the ~worst~ because if you make an enemy from the beginning that’s okay, they don’t know you, if they don’t like you that’s none of your business! but having FRIENDS, people who KNOW you completely and have seen you at your best and worst...... and suddenly decided that they don’t like you anymore, when they have seen every part of you..... that makes you feel like shit. you KNOW me, and you didn’t like me enough to stay. :((
i think he knows: A BOP !! literally such a summer bop to listen to in the car in the sunshine omg. i like it so much.
favorite lyric: “he got my heartbeat skipping down 16th avenue.”
miss americana and the heartbreak prince: WHAT IS THIS EVEN ABOUT I DONT KNOW BUT THIS ONE IS ACTUALLY PERFECTION. i picture this really creepy weird high school in my mind, the aesthetic i see in my head i am obsessed. one of the best in the album 13/10.
favorite lyric: “i’m feeling helpless, the damsels are depressed. boys will be boys then, where are the wise men? darling i’m scared” BECAUSE !!!!! and i am also obsessed with “voted most likely to run away with you” + THAT BRIDGE !!!
paper rings: the lyrics are really soft BUT THE SOUND OF IT !! it’s a literal rollercoaster, again! such a fun summer song, i love it.
favorite lyric: “i’m with you even if it makes me blue. which takes me back to the color that we painted your brother’s wall. honey without all the exes, fights, and flaws we wouldn’t be standing here so tall.”
cornelia street: THIS ONE MADE ME CRY! it’s so personal and it’s crystal clear how much taylor cares about her relationship, it made me emotional for some reason. i really like it and it’s not what i expected AT ALL, but it is so beautiful. her voice right after the bridge AHHH I SCREAMED.
favorite lyric: “i hope i never lose you, i hope it never ends. i’d never walk cornelia street again. that’s the kind of heartbreak time could never mend” literally the chorus but i love it <3, also “barefoot in the kitchen, sacred new beginnings that became my religion.”
death by a thousand cuts: I THINK THIS ONE WAS INSPIRED BY SOMEONE GREAT AND THAT MAKES IT SO EXCITING TO ME BECAUSE I LOVE THAT MOVIE <3 i wish it had a bridge because i love bridges but the perfect second verse makes up for it !!
favorite lyric: THE SECOND VERSE, ALL OF IT, GOODBYE.
london boy: LOVE THIS ONE 1) A BOP 2) ALL THOSE ENGLISH REFERENCES REALLY MADE IT PERFECT OH MY GOD!!!! i love it 100%
favorite lyric: “show me a gray sky, a rainy cab ride. babes, don’t threaten me with a good time (THE WAY SHE SAYS THIS) they say home is where the heart is. but god, i love the english” also THE BRIDGE ! + taylor saying “mates” PLEASE THIS IS ALL I HAVE EVER WANTED!
soon you’ll get better: beautiful. sending so much love taylor’s and andrea’s way. it’s so personal and all i could ever do is thank her for sharing. i cried, a lot. it’s very real and emotional.
false god: this one is so good, it’s not what i expected but i love it !!
favorite lyric: “i know heaven’s a thing, i go there when you touch me honey. hell is when i fight with you but we can patch it up good.”
yntcd: WE KNOW THIS ONE! I STILL LOVE IT!
favorite lyric: “and we see you over there on the internet, comparing all the girls who are killing it. but we figured you out, we all know now, we all got crowns” AND “SHADE NEVER MADE ANYBODY LESS GAY” OF COURSE.
afterglow: another beautiful song sonically, the lyrics make me a little sad but i also know relationships be like that sometimes :/ i love this one!!!
favorite lyric: “it’s so excruciating to see you low, just wanna lift you up and not let go” because this is so real, fighting is hard when you don’t want to hurt the other person BUT YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE DOING IT AND YOU WANT TO MAKE THEM FEEL OKAY BUT YOU ARE ALSO GOING THROUGH IT !!!!!
ME!: a cute bop but WHEN I PUT IT NEXT TO THESE OTHER SONGS IT’S NOT AS GOOD :/ still love it and i will forever scream it at the top of my lungs while having fun in the car, it’s all about the memories we are building with this songs folks!!
favorite lyric: “living in winter i am your summer.”
it’s nice to have a friend: this one is a little weird, i am still not sure what it’s about and the production is a bit weird. i am not sure, it’s not a favorite.
favorite lyric: “light pink sky on the roof, sun sinks down, no curfew.”
DAYLIGHT: this one is a literal pink sky, you can’t change my mind, i love it so much. it’s really soft and emotional for me. i hope this turns into my life, all i could ever hope for. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT <3
favorite lyric: “threw out our cloaks and our daggers because it’s morning now, it’s brighter now” I FEEL THAT IN MY LIFE RIGHT NOW AHHH.
“i once believed love would be burning RED but it’s golden like daylight” THE PERFECT LINE !!! THE BEST LINE !!!!!!!!!!
“you gotta step into the daylight and let it go” I JUST LOVE THIS ONE BECAUSE I’VE BEEN OBSESSED WITH THIS QUOTE FOR MONTHS AND REVOLVED MY LIFE AROUND IT ALL THIS TIME AND WHEN I HEARD IT I SCREAMED !!!!
“i just think that you are what you love” a perfect closing line. this woman’s mind is out of this world.
overall i am obsessed with this album, the soundtrack of this new chapter of my life and i could NOT BE MORE GRATEFUL.
top 5
1. THE MAN !!!!
2. miss americana and the heartbreak prince
3. cruel summer
4. i forgot that you existed
5. i think he knows (or london boy I AM NOT SURE) (also cornelia street is probably what follows this list very closely sooooo)
@taylorswift i love you thank you for writing the perfect album.

Stream of Consciousness Lover Album Reaction
I wrote out my first thoughts while listening to the album and put them in one big post. I hope you find them as funny as I do lmao
1. I Forget That You Existed
LOL so that’s what the drake Easter egg was about!
Who is this about????
NIIIIiiiiiiiiiIIIiiiiCE
SHE SOUNDS SO GOOD
I JUST FORGOT WHAT THEY WERE LMAOOO
HER LAUGH!! SO CUTE!!
This track is somehow savage and adorable at the same time
So......yeah.......
ShnfhKJHGKSHDKGHSKGHSJG
2. Cruel Summer
This is giving me Katy perry vibes
The devils roll their dice line is from this?? Didn’t expect that
This is maybe the catchiest song I’ve ever heard
Why is this not a single??????
STILL DONT KNOW WHAT SUMMERS A KNIFE MEANS
EXPLAIN TAYLOR
This also kind of gives me Jonas brothers vibes, why???
Again.....what is this about???
OooOOoooOooWhoooooAAAAhh i loveeee this
OOOH no you know what this gives me GETAWAY CAR vibes
Wait...do we think that at the beginning joe wanted to keep their relationship private and Taylor agreed but then changed her mind? WAIT NO.....is this about her having to keep her love for joe secret at first the summer they met because she was with someone else/it was too soon??
3. Lover
Ok SUPER WEIRD transition into lover but OK
As much as I love albums with a clear narrative like rep I also like being all over the place so this is fine
CAN I GO WHERE YOU GOOOOOO
FOR EVER AND EVER ANDIIIII
YOURE MY MY MY MYYYYY LOVER
I wonder what inspired her to use the term lover? Does she not know that normal people don’t speak like that?
WAIT IS THE REASON LOVER COMES AFTER CRUEL SUMMER because of the 3 summers line?? Like look how we started...now were here
Does the album begin with i forgot you existed because its like ok this Kanye situation happened...but now were gonna forget about that and talk about the realer real story of the past couple years of my life rather than seeing it through the lens of that story like on rep
4. The Man
THE ACCURACY
THE ACCURAACCCCYYYYYYYYY
IT HUUURRTTSSS
Honestly though i actually thought this one would be more savage, i thi
DID SHE JUST SAY BITCHES AND MODELSSSS?????
SLJGSHUKGHKDG
Never mind this is as savage as i wanted
I should know better than to judge a Taylor song before the bridge
Again why isn’t this a single.....it better be
5. The Archer
The emotional whiplash this album is giving me is insane.
It’s like RED but with synths
Is the archer placed here because part of her lack of self confidence comes from the things the media says about her (because she’s a woman not a man?) INTERESTING THOUGHT
Don’t have much else to say about this, we already know
.....
Wow the cake i bought for tonight is somehow way too sweet
6. I Think He Knows
Definitely didn’t think i think he knows was about being horny af
But this is so catchy
Why is everything so catchy?? Literally every song should be a single
BOY I UNDERSTAND the confidence!! After the archer!! I love that he makes her feel that way1!!
I THINK HE KNOOOOOOOWWWWSS
This gives me teenage dream vibes and i fucking love that song
7. Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince
Ok time for the one with the weird title
I love how she keeps comparing her current feelings to how she felt as a teenager!! How its the same and different....very good.
SHES A BAD BAD GIRL
More dice!
Is she imagining what it would be like if she was in this relationship in high school? Because I DO THAT ALL THE TIIIIME GIRL SAME
THATS MY WHOLE WORLD SOOOO CUUUUTE
YOU PLAY STUPID GAMES YOU WIN STUPID PRIZES
VOTED
MOST
LIKELY
TO
RUN
AWAY
WITH
YOU
I really like this one. I didn’t expect I would.
This should be a single.
8. Paper Rings
THE VOICE EFFECT
She’s singing so fast on these songs!!!! I CANT KEEP UPP
UH HUH
THATS RIGHT
This is so retro and i loooooooooooooooooooooove it
DIRTY DREAMS??????? TAYLOR PLEASE
OMG THE COLOUR WE PAINTED YOUR BROTHERS WALL
THE PICTURE
THE PICTURE
FROM THE REP MAGAZINES
SDIHGUSHGUKHDZRKUGHKUDZHGUHDZGHDKZHGYIDZJLGJLDJGJSDJGDHZGHLGHLSHGHDG
II LIKE SHINY THINGS
THIS SONG IS SO FUN! ALL THESE SONGS ARE SO FUN!!
Ok baby boy that’s kinda weird but you know what..
....
....
Ok its still weird but maybe it will grow on me
This should be a single.
9. Cornelia Street
HERE IT IS!!! THE FIRST TAYLOR PRODUCED SONG
I NEVER WANT CORNELIA STREET AGAIN?? WHAT IS THIS ABOUT?? THEIR WORST FIGHT? ANOTHER RELATIONSIP? QUESTIONS
The storytelling!
Wait......is this about before they ran away together in CIWYW?? Like she thought he didn’t really want her so she was gonna run away alone...but then he was like no i really do lets go
I totally thought that this was the one with the staring out the window like I’m not your favorite town line was from
She ended it with the line she started with (i think)? Ike she used to!
Kinda feel like people hyped this one up too much but i do like it
10. Death by a Thousand Cuts
The piano!!!!
Like a thousand notes a thousand cuts
Look through the windows of this love - like the heart on her eye! I get it I GET IT lmaoooo
If this song was on red it would have the saddest production but on this album its a bop
11. London Boy
IS THAT JOE??? OMG lmao
HER ACCENT LMAOOOOOOOOO
I don’t know if this song is supposed to be as hilarious as i think it is but i really do think its hilarious
What does like a Tennessee Stella McCartney even mean????
I kinda feel like this song is too specific to her life to be relatable so maybe that’s why i feel that way about it?
12. Soon You’ll Get Better
Ok great... so we went from that to the sad one
I have to prepare
I didn’t tell you i was scared....
Cause you have to...
The fact that this is the country song...
I cant
GOD NOW IM CRYING THIS IS SO SAD
That was the only song so far i had to actually stop typing for. God....I’m so sad for her and her family.
13. False God
I can barely take this song in because of what just came before.
But i really like it. And i really like the theme of religion on this album
14. You Need to Calm Down
NOW YNTCD IS PLAYING
??? IM LITERALLY SOO SAD FROM SOON YOULL GET BETTER STILL
I CANT
PROCESS
THIS
This album is literally all over the place, i keep trying to assign a narrative to it and its not working out so I’m just gonna give up
Sometimes albums are just collections of songs and not a coherent, linear story and that is ok! Even if its not what i prefer
It certainly didn’t bother me on her first few albums.
The one thing i take away from this is like...no wonder she’s so determined to be so overly positive, i think for her its that or break down crying in the face of what’s happening in her family
15. Afterglow
I really love this song!!! Hashtag relatable
......
Man..you can really tell even just from my typing that my heart isn’t in this anymore after that song
Like
Fuck
I think I’m just sad for me too, because i know that i will go through that too sooner rather than later and I already have friends dealing with losing a parent.
16. ME!
My only thought on this is god bless brendon Urie for injecting so much additional joy and energy into this song and making Taylor happy, i just get the vibe that she really needed that
ALSO WHAT THERES REALLY NO HEY KIDS SPELLING IS FUN
TAYLOR EXPLAAIAIIIIIIIAIAIIAN
We’ll see if its on my physical cd copies when they arrive...if not then maybe it was always planned to be a line only in the single version
17. It’s Nice to Have a Friend
Ok I don’t really like this song that much but i really like the messages she’s trying to send like...real love feels like hanging out with a childhood bestie, so comfortable
18. Daylight
I WAS LIKE MEH
BUT THE FUCKING BRIDGE
THE BRIDGE
IM EMOTIONALLY DESTROYED
Also something about the chorus reminds me of the chorus of starlight
STEP INTO THE DAYLIGHT AND LET IT GO
YES
I WAS LIKE NO IS THAT NOT A LYRIC??
BUT IT ISTHANK GOD
THE END
YOU ARE WHAT YOU LOVE
THAT WAS LIKE
MY MANTRA FOR A COUPLE YEARS A WHILE BACK
BECAUSE
I LOVED SO MANY PEOPLE BUT THEY DIDNT LOVE ME
AND I WANTED TO BE DEFINITED BY THE FACT THAT I LOVED THEM NOT THAT HTEY DIDNT LOVE ME
IIIIIIIIIIII
I
IN CONCLUSION:
My feelings are everywhere. Some songs disappointed me but some blew me away - soon you’ll get better is basically the new Never Grow Up for me which is saying a lot. Everything is catchy a hell though even the songs I didn’t like as much. Ultimately i would have liked more songs about varying subject matter esp. self love but as it is, it is still somehow so all over the place. It really just shows how many emotions and phases can be contained within one relationship (i mean I’m assuming every song about a relationship is about joe). I really think that the song about her mom maybe should have been placed somewhere else...I don’t know where I would have put it but that shit is HEAVY. I am so honored that she and her family would share that with us though. I have a million question about how Andrea is doing and if my theory on why tour hasn’t been announced is correct...maybe she will explain more in the interviews/secret session audio we’re getting in the next couple days. I think my favorite song is Lover but that may change. I don’t think any song on here tops my current all time favorite Taylor song though which is CIWYW. That’s a little disappointing but not every song or album has to be my fave! And this album will probably grow on me esp as i hear Taylor’s explanations of it. Rep did. I really did nooott feel good about most of rep at first, it took a few days.

Lover 1 month later thoughts
So for those who have missed my other posts, going back and listening to an album from start to finish at the 1, 2, 3 and 6 month points to see how my opinions on songs + the album itself change is a thing I do with Taylor albums now. If you’re that interested, here is my Lover release date thoughts along with my Reputation release date thoughts, my Reputation one month later thoughts, my Reputation two month later thoughts, my Reputation three month later thoughts and my Reputation seven months later thoughts.
All up: I tend to agree with people that it’s wild that this album has only been in our lives for a month. While it’s definitely still got that new shine to it that makes me listen to it more than most my other music at the moment, it feels as if it has integrated itself into my other music very well and feels like it’s been there forever. The general feel of the structure this album is reminiscent to Speak Now for me which probably sounds weird to say, but I feel while Taylor’s other albums felt like reading a chapter of a book into her life or watching a movie, these two albums feel like looking through a photo album. They are moments with great depth but are more loosely connected all together in a linear sense. I will also say that certain songs on this album were definitely growers for me to the point I probably could have made a Lover 1 week later post that was different from my first listen thoughts. It also means that while I have a clear top 3 and bottom 1 song, my ranking for the rest of the album moves around dramatically dependent on my mood. I’d also probably say that due to the growth of certain songs plus the different sounds throughout and quality of Lover, it has probably moved comfortably and purely into being my third favourite Taylor album behind RED and Reputation instead of sharing third place with Fearless. Finally, the more I listen to this album, the more I pick up little things that remind me of Australian artists I listened to in my childhood which is a nice throwback and makes me cherish those moments more.
I Forgot That You Existed: Hot take? The laughs in this song are the happiest parts of this album. Like that moment she realises she’s free from their grasp? Amazing and I can say from experience, is the most freeing feeling in the world. I definitely think it still gives off major Kate Miller-Heidke vibes, especially with the inflictions and voice/music changes on the indifference and blur lines. I also think it’s still Bad Blood’s older, wiser and just generally better sibling. In saying all of this, I can also understand why this would be a mood based song for some people because there are definitely days where I could listen to it on repeat while others it just plays in the background while I do my uni work or cleaning or whatever.
Cruel Summer: This song has definitely grown on me. I’ve also realised that a large part of the reason I wasn’t feeling it at first may or may not have been because it reminded me of a time and person I didn’t really want to think about so I legitimately think my brain subconsciously blocked out this song to the point it took weeks to learn the words when I had the rest of the songs down in days. I don’t know, that probably sounds stupid and weird but yeah, it was a thing. I also have to say that I couldn’t help myself laughing at people who thought she was calling his body blue because like all I could think of was Avatar to be completely honest. But then again, who am I to talk because I still have issues not hearing “he looks so pretty like a devil”? I also find it interesting that Taylor wants to make this a single given the perfect time for that would have been before the album came out given her focus on American charts. On that note though, I will say that a November/December release could be amazing for her if she is trying to broaden her horizons for tour because that’s Summer for the Southern Hemisphere and given how well Getaway Car did in Australia without being an official single and how related the two songs sound, I could see Cruel Summer smashing the charts here.
Lover: My thoughts on this song have basically stayed the same. The whole song has grown on me so I like it all now, but there’s just something so special about the bridge that it’ll probably always be my favourite part. It also still makes me want to ballroom dance/waltz and have a romantic partner, but alas, I do not have the time nor resources for either of those. I also can’t wait until Summer because I’m still feeling those Summer night time vibes and it’d be great to experience that. Either way, like I said the first time, it comes off Cruel Summer very well and feels more and more right being placed where it was in the album.
The Man: I think that this song is one of the most relatable songs Taylor will ever write to be honest. Like it is still a mood and one of the songs I listen to most from this album. There have also been two things that have made me appreciate the song even more. Firstly, my ex told me that despite being a man, The Man is in his top three songs for this album because he relates it to how people perceive his bisexuality and the racism he has faced. Secondly, I ran into my other ex (yes I’m that girl who stays friends with most her exes, mind your own business), and he told me that he was shocked that it wasn’t in my top three songs for the album because it’s ‘so [me]’, and I mean he’s not wrong. I guess that just speaks volumes of how strong my top three for this album are though because like if they can beat out a song I listen to constantly that people see as my song and thought was in that top three, then the others must be amazing haha. The only thing less than positive I will say about this song is I still think it feels a little weird coming off Lover.
The Archer: This song has been hitting more than usual lately (especially the bridge), but I still maintain that this song hits the hardest when you are in a specific mood. I also still maintain that The Man leading into The Archer is the best contrast transition on this album and I’m shocked more people have not spoken about it.
I Think He Knows: Talk about a grower. This somehow went from “yeah that’s cute” to one of my most played songs for this album. I still hear a mix of “That’s my toe” and “That’s my soul” instead of “Bless my soul” though if I’m honest. Also, I am very shocked at people being like “No Taylor, he doesn’t know holding a glass is attractive because there’s literally nothing sexual about that” because my god is that line relatable. Like there were so many times with my ex that I’d look at him doing something mundane and just go “Shit, I fucking love/want you right now”. I mean it wasn’t always sexual, like sometimes the way he held a kid would make me feel the romantic love I had for him more, but there were definitely sexual moments where he was doing mundane shit too. So yeah, I like get what Taylor meant a lot. As a final note, I made a post that I wanted booty shorts that said “Boy I Understand” across the ass and Imma be real, if Taylor doesn’t release them, a sequined version of that may or may not be my current tour outfit plan.
Miss Americana And The Heartbreak Prince: Imma be real, I completely missed the political undertones to this song on my first listen. And it makes me feel stupid not only for missing it but for then in the same breath saying I wanted a whole song on “If boys will be boys then where are the wise men?” because this song is literally that. Having the political view of this song definitely made it a lot better for me, especially seeing as even though it is a very American song, it heavily relates to how I feel about Australian politics at the moment. I also read a reading of it surrounding sexual assault, and as a victim, it both broke my heart and made me love the song even more. I still think it has very movie like and Lana Del Rey like vibes to it. This is the other of the songs my ex wrongfully guessed was in my top 3 because he got the political message straight off and as such also thought it was ‘so [me]’. All up, I think this is one of the most important songs Taylor has written and I can definitely see myself listening to it for years to come.
Paper Rings: This is still a feel good bop that I can mostly put on at any point and enjoy, but to be honest, it’s still not one I’ve gravitated towards. Like it’s got some killer lyrics in “Without all the exes, fights and flaws we wouldn’t be standing here so tall” and the bridge in general. But yeah, something about it just hasn’t stuck with me past “it’s a cute song” which is interesting given how many people I’ve spoken to that say this is a favourite of theirs.
Cornelia Street: I saw a post a few days ago about how someone can’t listen to Lover because they keep stopping at Death By A Thousand Cuts and repeating it because they love it that much and to be honest, that’s how I feel about Cornelia Street. Like even now, I’m fighting the urge not to just listen to this for the next few hours on repeat. I’m not exactly what it is about this song but something just grabs my soul every time I listen to it in a way that most songs don’t. Upon my first listen, I felt that this and Soon You’ll Get Better shared the spot for my favourite song on this album, but now I have to say that Cornelia Street has surpassed it and is a clear favourite. That’s really all I’ve got to say about this song; like it’s just that good.
Death By A Thousand Cuts: Lyrically this song has grown on me a lot in the last month, especially the line “I ask the traffic lights if it will be alright; they say I don’t know” and I think had this come out on Reputation or a year before, it would have been a favourite lyrically because it would have been relatable as fuck; but I’m not in that headspace anymore. The production also still isn’t my favourite so I’m glad she’s done that acoustic version at the France show, but I still also really want a piano version at some point.
London Boy: I’m gonna be real, I can probably count the amount of times I’ve listened to this on my hands. Like it’s cute and I’d have no issue with it playing, but it’s just not at relatable to me and there’s just songs on the album and otherwise I’d rather listen to.
Soon You’ll Get Better: As I alluded to in my first post, the most heartbreaking thing about this song for me is knowing the person I relate it to most isn’t going to get better because she doesn’t want to. Much like Death By A Thousand Cuts, had this come out at a time where I still had that hope, it probably would have rivaled Ronan as my favourite Taylor song ever. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a top two track on this album for me, but I know when I eventually get around to reranking all of Taylor’s songs, it’s going to be a lot lower than it otherwise may have been. It also somewhat concerns me hearing “Who am I supposed to talk to, what am I supposed to do if there’s no you” after hearing Taylor saying that she’s not getting professional psychological help and Andrea is the main source of venting. Like I know she’s got other support, but losing someone that vital (as much as we don’t want to talk about it, Andrea is probably going to die before Taylor, cancer or not) is rough when you do have professional help, let alone when you don’t. I mean I know it’s not my place to push anything, but it definitely does make my “protective mum friend” mode come to life and want to protect Taylor and I just hope that should the worst happen, she’s got everything she needs to move past it.
False God: Again, another song that has grown a lot on me. I think the production and New York City line being part of this song just felt so leftfield for me upon the first listen that I somewhat threw it away, but like after getting used to it, I adored it.
You Need To Calm Down: I don’t really have much to say about this song itself. It’s still an absolute bop that I listen to at least daily. I do find it interesting that most people said that this would be the song they would take off the album because it doesn’t ‘fit’ because in some ways I see that. But by the same note, I feel like it connects really well with The Man and I Forgot That You Existed that it does fit. Personally I feel like if it was in the first half of the album, less people would have said it should have been the one to chuck, but I guess we’ll never know.
Afterglow: I honestly haven’t listened to this song as much as I thought I would. Like this would have been a 2018 me anthem, but 2019 me has not burnt any bridges or caused bad fights so there’s just not the need to listen to it. I did listen to it enough to realise that the Weeknd vibes I heard production wise was a similar beat to Wicked Games. Also, the way Taylor says “I don’t want to do this, I don’t want to do this to you” gives off major The Veronicas vibes which I have to wonder if that was intentional given Taylor’s friendship with Ruby Rose during the time Ruby and one of the girls dated. All up, it’s a good song that I’m sure I’ll cry to and heal with one day, but today is not that day.
ME!: This is still by far my least favourite song on the album, but I’ve gotten to the point where it can play in the background and given I’m in the right mood, I won’t actively skip it. Really its only saving grace in my opinion is how well it comes off Afterglow. I do also wish she would have put something else in the “spelling is fun” part because as much as that part was not my favourite, it sounds empty as fuck now to the point it’s kinda awkward.
It’s Nice To Have A Friend: Okay look, I get that this is potentially the most different sounding song Taylor will ever write and a bit to get used to, but it grows so much on you if you let it. Like the Sunday after release date, me and the ex that relates to The Man were just laying on my bed, drinking Camomile tea and listening to Lover (for the first time for him and first time in company for me) in silence and in the moment this song was playing, it clicked for me. Like it truly is nice to have a friend. And in that moment, it was just so relaxing and I was so at peace with myself. So I’m not going to stand here and say that this song is the one I’ve listened to most, but given the right mood, this song really hits and I hope that you all get to experience that one day because it truly was incredible.
Daylight: My new ‘song written for a romantic relationship that I relate to on a self love basis’ song. I’m not quite sure if it meets This Love’s standard on that front purely because again, timing is a funny thing and This Love came out right when I needed it whereas I don’t “need” Daylight as much. But I still love it to the point that it rounds off my top 3 for this album and is the one song my ex correctly guessed was in that top 3. I will say that I find it interesting that most the interpretations of the line “Clearing the air, I breathed in the smoke” where positive, because to be honest, I did and still take it as “being too nice gets you in trouble” teas. Like I assumed that she meant that she was so desperate to make things good with certain people that she injured herself in the process. Either way, as I said, I love this song and as I said the first time, it’s definitely a good closer to the album
