How To Jump Start Your Car
When a car’s engine isn’t cranking there could be a few other reasons apart from a dead battery. This is why you should go through all of those before getting to the jump-starting itself. The best way to be sure that the battery is the main culprit is to turn the key to ignition and observe the car’s interior lights. If they flicker, this is almost surely a battery issue. If the dashboard doesn’t react at all it can be either an entirely dead battery or a computer issue. First and foremost, check your car’s manual to see if there are specific steps listed that are different for your car. For instance, some cars have positive grounding, meaning they require a completely different procedure to be jump-started. Those, however, are quite rare nowadays.
Make sure the car is off with your key out and away from the ignition. The jump starter should also be off.
Now get to the clamping process. Your car’s battery terminals will most likely be color-coded red for positive and black for negative. Similarly, the jump starter’s clamps are also red for positive and black for negative. Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal and the black one to the negative. Always start with the positive terminal while you keep the jump starter off.
Once you are done attaching the red clamp, attach the black one to the other terminal (or to any exposed metal piece of the car). At the moment of attaching the black terminal, you might see sparks but that is normal. Avoid touching the red and black clamps of the jump starter.
Once all the terminals and clamps are connected, move the jump starter away from the vehicle (if the cables allow it) and turn it on.
Next, go into your car and turn the ignition key. Most modern jump starters will allow you to crank almost immediately but some models will require you to wait a minute or two before the battery gets some juice in it.
If your car refuses to start after the first cranking, try again in a minute. Don’t crank for more than 5 seconds at a time.
Once your car starts, remove the clamps and let it run for a few minutes. Some people recommend driving as that will arguably charge the car’s battery better.

[NF] A Saturday in late July
Part 3
Before I begin, I would like to preface this with a little information. Dad had many positive attributes. But two of them caused him to be looked to by his contemporaries for leadership. One was an incredible memory, as in remembering where a tool we needed exactly was (at his brothers place) because he was the one who had hung that tool there OVER 42 YEARS BEFORE. The other was his ability to keep calm and analytical in the most desperate of emergencies. No mater what the situation, he was always cool and knew the right course of action.
A half dozen other trucks greeted us as we pulled into Art Gearhart's farmyard. Even in the Darkness and rain, I could see it was a mess. The old part of the barn, with the old laid stone wall had tipped away and was shoved, somewhat intact, against the silos. The newer addition, where the calves and younger animals were, had mostly pancaked straight down and flattened out. It's block wall and mostly collapsed. I could see men on the twisted wreckage of the barn looking for a way in and I could see beams of light shining off of the silos on the other side, meaning more men were searching over there as well.
Dad grabbed a lantern, and leaning in the cab to shield it from the rain, lit it up. Uncle Gary and another neighbor came up to us, "We got no easy way in, Doc". referring to Dad by the family nickname everyone used all his adult life. "Silo full of haylage fell on the milk house and across the whole south end. The silo rooms on the east side are smashed in too". He continued. "What's in em?", Dad asked. "New end was full of baled hay, Old barn had chopped straw full to the peak". The old stone wall to the west had no windows. The barn hill allowing tractors and wagon fulls' of hay to be pulled into the barn hade been there. Art had adapted to haylage early and had the barn embankment removed when he no longer needed it.
Dad turned to me and said, "Grab a sledge" Then told Tom to bring the big flashlight. I went to the rear of the truck and dropped the tailgate, I handed Tom the light and a heavy, 4 foot long prybar before grabbing the sledgehammer. We followed Dad along the exposed stone wall.
Had it been anyone besides my Father, I may have thought he had taken leave of his senses. He walked along the wall, only to stop and look at intently, with the lantern held high in the rain, only to move a few feet farther along the wall and repeat the process. Then, he turned to me and said, "Here!, Right here!". Pointing to a blue tinted stone about 4 feet up in the wall. "Give it your' heaviest regards". The family euphemism for maximum effort. Sliding up to the end of the handle, I gave the sledgehammer a mighty roundhouse swing, fully expecting it to rebound back in my face. Instead, the rock moved a little and the mortar holding it in place broke away. limestone.
Instantly I understood. In the early days of settling Wisconsin, concrete mix was expensive to ship. Most walls were laid up with kilned lime. Mixed with water it got hot and set, making an acceptable mortar to lay up walls. It was used up until the early teens. It worked well, but could be quickly destroyed with water intrusion. We were quickly joined by more neighbors, and with sledgehammers and prybars, a hole in the wall quickly formed in the outer shell. Then it was getting the smaller loose stones from the center. Walls were mortared inside, outside and top, but the center was just filled with rocks and airspace was left in for insulation and condensation. When we had an acceptable hole all the way through the 2 foot thick wall, Dad said, "get in there", and helped me through. He then passed me the lantern.
I looked around and took stock of the situation as the crew worked to enlarge the hole. I could not stand upright, the barn had shifted and the plate had slipped off of the wall. The inside was a twisted jumbled mess. I could not see very far into the barn as the ceiling was down to within 2 feet of the floor in places. Some cows were contently chewing their cud. Some were panting in the heat with the loss of the ventilation. Some were trying to stand under too low of a ceiling. Some were injured. Some were dead. The barn floor (the ceiling above me) had some lumber broken, leaving small piles of straw in places. Instantly, I saw a danger. Passing the lantern back out I said, "No flame lights, we have straw everywhere. Electric lights only".
Dad was the next one through the hole. he began to look things over. Uncle Gary was next. "We are gonna need to stabilize before jacking". He began, looking out the growing hole, he began to give instructions. "get someone on top of the wall. Get the swamp hooks on the outside of the wall and get them in solid, then send in the chains". Hooking the chains to the big timbers and to the swamp hooks on the wall would prevent the barn from shifting anymore east while jacking.
More and more men and equipment poured into the barn. I could hear chainsaws running outside as they cut broken planks for 'cribbing', the stacks of blocking needed to hold the barn up during and after jacking. As the ceiling was slowly and methodically lifted, section by section, I had the job of using a hacksaw to cut the stanchions away and free the trapped cows. The sounds of jacks, creaking lumber and saws filled the barn. Occasionally, somewhere above, a plank or board could no longer stand the strain and snapped like a rifle shot. Everyone would drop for safety, but as soon as we would see the our work was holding, the sounds of jacking and sawing would start again. As soon as a cow was freed she was haltered and lead out the hole in the wall. Dad opened his smock to reveal he had on his holstered .22 revolver. And he mercifully ended the suffering of those cows who were beyond help.
After all of the surviving cows had been taken out, we turned our attention to the new section of the barn. The barn had separated some at the connection between the old and new part. The upper barn floor had slipped off of the timbers and dropped, leaving a shear wall down to the cement floor. There was no way to get the jacks under to get a purchase on the beams. We would have to find another way in.
When I got out of the barn, I was greeted by a much different scene. The rain was down to just an annoying drizzle. A 656 international with a loader was in the yard. the loader was all the way up with a rope fastened to it. the other end of the rope was tied to the old corn crib. A large tarp was over this and tied to various trucks at the corners, making a temporary tent. In the tent two of the local veterinarians worked to treat the injured animals. The 656 also screamed almost full throttle as it ran a generator. this powered lights in the tent for the vet's to work by. Then the animals were loaded into trailers to be taken to temporary housing with the neighbors.
The new end of the barn was much changed also. with the help of chainsaws, chains and tractors, a crew had totally cut away and removed the upper part of the barn. Then they had thrown all of the baled hay off and it had been pushed it away with tractors with loaders. They were now going in with the tractors and with jacks and blocking, lifting the barn floor off of the trapped young stock and cutting it into sections and hauling it away.
As the rain finally stopped, we were able to remove the last of the barn floor that had fallen in. We had managed to save 43 of the 54 milk cows. but our success with the claves was much worse, and less than half were saved.

Where The First Paragliding Sport Was Performed In The World? The first inventor of the paragliding is “David Barish” who was working at NASA. In 1965, David took off from the hills with his parachute prototype he invented for the safe landing of space capsules, and threw the first idea of this sport. On June 25, 1978, members of the parachute club d’Anemasse (Haute-savoie, France) began flying tests with their parachutes from the Mieussy Perthuiset in the Alps. In Switzerland, the “Ailes de K” company produced the first industrial paraglider, “La Randonneuse”, in 1985.

The evolution during the last decades
Across Europe, there has been a sharp downward trend in traffic accident figures over the past decades. Belgium follows that line. Where in 1980 there were 465 fatalities or serious injuries per billion vehicle-km were to be regretted, there are still 144 in 1998. More specifically for accidents with trucks, we can record the same sharply declining trend. European figures 1 indicate that during the last decade the number of victims decreased by 20%, while the number of kilometers traveled increased by 40% in the same period.
This does not alter the fact that the road safety of trucks remains a concern. Commercial vehicles, which make up 10% of the total vehicle market and cover 16% of all vehicle km, are involved in 11% of all road accidents, but 20% of road casualties. The nature of the vehicle, with its larger mass and specific construction, plays a decisive role in this. The number of kilometers covered also has an influence on these figures.
It is also noteworthy that only 1.2% of all deaths and serious injuries in traffic are occupants of trucks. Again the reason is to search in the specific vehicle characteristics.
In order to achieve safer traffic, all the factors involved must be continually evaluated and improved. Research 2learns that often different factors – whether or not at the same time – are the basis of an accident. In 10% of the accidents one or other cause can be found in case of shortcomings or defects on the vehicle. In 30% of the accidents a cause can be found in the traffic infrastructure. But the most striking thing is that in 95% of the accidents one or other cause of the accident can be found at the driver of the truck itself. [NF] A Saturday in late July

Before I begin, I would like to preface this with a little information. Dad had many positive attributes. But two of them caused him to be looked to by his contemporaries for leadership. Dad grabbed a lantern, and leaning in the cab to shield it from the rain, lit it up. Uncle Gary and another neighbor came up to us, "We got no easy way in, Doc". referring to Dad by the family nickname everyone used all his adult life. "Silo full of haylage fell on the milk house and across the whole south end. The silo rooms on the east side are smashed in too". He continued. "What's in em?", Dad asked. "New end was full of baled hay, Old barn had chopped straw full to the peak". The old stone wall to the west had no windows. The barn hill allowing tractors and wagon fulls' of hay to be pulled into the barn hade been there. Art had adapted to haylage early and had the barn embankment removed when he no longer needed it.
Dad turned to me and said, "Grab a sledge" Then told Tom to bring the big flashlight. I went to the rear of the truck and dropped the tailgate, I handed tom the light and a heavy, 4 foot long prybar before grabbing the sledgehammer. we followed Dad along the exposed stone wall.
Had it been anyone besides my Father, I may have thought he had taken leave of his senses. He walked along the wall, only to stop and look at intently, with the lantern held high in the rain, only to move a few feet farther along the wall and repeat the process. I could not see very far into the barn as the ceiling was down to within 2 feet of the floor in places. Some cows were contently chewing their cud. Some were panting in the heat with the loss of the ventilation. Some were trying to stand under too low of a ceiling. Some were injured. Some were dead. The barn floor (the ceiling above me) had some lumber broken, leaving small piles of straw in places. Instantly, I saw a danger. Passing the lantern back out I said, "No flame lights, we have straw everywhere. Electric lights only".
Dad was the next one through the hole. he began to look things over. Uncle Gary was next. "We are gonna need to stabilize before jacking". He began, looking out the growing hole, he began to give instructions. "get someone on top of the wall. Get the swamp hooks on the outside of the wall and get them in solid, then send in the chains". Hooking the chains to the big timbers and to the swamp hooks on the wall would prevent the barn from shifting anymore east while jacking.
More and more men and equipment poured into the barn. I could hear chainsaws running outside as they cut broken planks for 'cribbing', the stacks of blocking needed to hold the barn up during and after jacking. As the ceiling was slowly and methodically lifted, section by section, I had the job of using a hacksaw to cut the stanchions away and free the trapped cows. The sounds of jacks, creaking lumber and saws filled the barn. Occasionally, somewhere above, a plank or board could no longer stand the strain and snapped like a rifle shot. Everyone would drop for safety, but as soon as we would see the our work was holding, the sounds of jacking and sawing would start again. As soon as a cow was freed she was haltered and lead out the hole in the wall. Dad opened his smock to reveal he had on his holstered .22 revolver. And he mercifully ended the suffering of those cows who were beyond help.
