Like Caramel For Chocolate- An Omega Bakugou x Alpha f!Reader fic. Part 6
Part 1 Here
Next part Here
Content Warning: Negative headspace, omegaverse, self deprecation, depressive thoughts, pushy parental figures, ambiguous omegaverse reproduction, unhealthy relationships, relationship that could be easily fixed if idiots would use their words and communicate, Shinso/Denki side relationship, Bakugou is a dumbass but so is y/n
Where we left off-
Before Bakugou could reply, the jeweler came back into the room and handed Denki a piece of paper.
“All right sir, here is your receipt! Your ring should be ready in three days.”
“Thanks.” Denki shoved the receipt into his pocket, quickly making his way to the door. “See you around Bakubro. Don't want to be late for my shift.” The door closed behind him with a bang.
Bakugou wasn’t annoyed though. Now he could pick out the perfect ring for Y/N and not worry about Kaminari being nearby. Everyone knows Kami can’t keep a secret to save his life.
“I don’t know how much longer I can keep all of this a secret.” Denki moaned into his hands. He was sitting with his head buried in his arms. Y/N reached across the table and gently petted his hair.
“I know what you mean, but I don’t think either of us are in a good position to start telling people.”
Y/n and Denki sat in a secluded corner of a dimly lit cafe. Both of them had this time free and both of them definitely needed to talk. They stood a lot less chance of anyone asking questions if they were just two friends getting lunch instead of them privately going to each other’s apartments.
Denki looked up, giving Y/N a wide eyed expression. “I know, but I wasn’t expecting Bakugou to show up when I was dropping off that abomination of a ring! I just was lucky the jeweler had already taken it to the back. You were right by the way, that thing is absolutely horrendous. Like, was the designer blind?”
Y/N snorted. “From what I’ve heard, great great grandpappy had a lot more money than brains and wanted to impress his omega by shoving as many stones onto a ring as possible.”
“No kidding. I think it can be seen from space.”
“Very likely.” Y/N chuckled before slumping back into her seat with a sigh. “Though I might have an idea about what Bakugou was doing there.”
“Wait, seriously?”
Y/N nodded with a sigh. “Yeah. When I got back he invited me to the summer festival. I’d forgotten about it.”
“Ah shit, yeah. Isn’t that your guys' anniversary?”
“Yep.” Y/N sighed, rubbing her forehead. “Of course he had to pick this time to actually celebrate. We haven’t gone or done anything… God, I think since he became a hero.”
“So you think he was getting a gift.” Denki sat back as the server came, placing your orders in front of each of you. You both murmured your thank yous and waited until the server was out of earshot before resuming your conversation.
“Yeah, he had to have been. Makes me feel terrible, but there wasn’t a good time to… Well…”
Y/n gestured between herself and Denki.
“Tell him that you’ve been betrothed to an omega of much superior looks, breeding, and manners?”
You gave Denki a little kick under the table as he cackled. He grinned cheekily as he poked at his food. “Sorry. Humor is my coping mechanism. I get it though. Timing sucks all the way around.”
You nodded, sighing and taking a bite of your own food. “Can’t say anything during his heat. Then his schedule was swamped, and I had to sort things out with you. Then bam, anniversary that for some reason he decided to remember this year.”
Denki snorted, popping a bite into his mouth. “That’s about the long and the short of it. And we haven’t even begun to figure out how to tell everyone we’ve not only accepted arranged betrothals, but that we’re engaged to each other.”
“I don’t know, I was kind of hoping we could just move to Tahiti and never speak to our former friend groups ever again?”
“A valid possibility. But that means we’d have to learn French and maybe Tahitian. You know I only passed English because Hitoshi and his dad coached me.”
“Fair point.” You sighed heavily. “But I’m really not looking forward to these conversations.”
“They have to happen though. You might have some anonymity to hide behind, but I’d rather my friends not find out about our engagement when they see an article about Chargebolt getting married.”
“Really?” You smirked slightly. “Then you’re going to tell everyone at your agency, hmm?”
Denki kicked you under the table. “Shut up!”
You poked at your food again as the smile fell from your lips. “So… Did you get a chance to think about what I sent you?”
Kaminari nodded. “Yeah. And I hate to say it, but I think you’re right.”
“I thought about it a lot. I hate to leave the area, but it would be too awkward to stay here after everything.”
A few days ago you had sent Denki an email with a list of places that had job openings that would suit both of you. You both loved where you lived, but after everything, how could you stay? There’s no way the two of you could continue to keep living in the same apartment building as Bakugou. That would be cruel. Cruel to whom you didn’t quite want to think about. You spoke up again.
“Any place catch your eye?”
Kaminari nodded. “I was kind of thinking Okinawa. I have a few connections there. Decent distance from here and from our parents. And that would probably be the easiest transition.”
“Works for me.” You said, as if it wasn’t ripping your heart out to do this. It hurt. But it had to happen. In the end, you had to believe this was what was best for everyone. It might take some time, but this was it. This was what would make everyone happy in the long run.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shinsou was worried. Denki had been acting odd. And that’s saying something. The blond omega was usually loud and bubbly, the life of the agency. At least once a week, he invited Shinsou out for drinks, meals, clubs, karaoke, or some other nonsense. But ever since he’d gotten back from his three day leave, Kaminari had been acting strange. When he thought no one was looking, he was quiet. Withdrawn. Like he was puzzling out the toughest problem of his life.
Denki having a problem? Pretty typical. Denki having a problem and not talking to Shinsou about it? Pretty unusual. The blond had always come to the purple haired alpha with even the simplest of problems. Apartment searches, furniture assembly, what support items would suit his quirk best, even things like what to get from Starbucks. And even though he might groan and roll his eyes, secretly Hitoshi loved every second of it. When he had helped by digging through websites, cobbling together a rickety shelf, or reminding Denki that he always got the most cloyingly sweet items on the menu; Hitoshi got to pretend that he was Denki’s alpha.
Shinsou wasn’t sure exactly when he had fallen in love with Denki. Probably had been since high school at least. His dad had warned him against loud blonds while his father had laughed. But he couldn’t help it. Kaminari had been one of the first people to enthusiastically believe in him. Had always sought him out and wormed his way into Shinsou’s life and heart. And now Shinsou couldn’t understand it, but Denki was pulling away. Even as he watched the blond who was typing up a report on his computer, it somehow felt like Kaminari was slipping right through his fingers.
Shinsou cleared his throat. Kaminari glanced up. “Yeah man? What’s up?”
“You doing okay, Denks? You’ve seemed a little out of it.”
Denki met his eyes, startled, then quickly glanced away. “Yeah. Yep! Totally fine.”
“Denki. I know you.”
Kaminari sighed and slumped on his desk. “Just some life stuff. Family stuff. Friend stuff.”
Shinsou frowned, walking over to place a hand on Denki’s shoulder. “You know you can talk to me about anything, right?”
Denki snorted and laughed quietly. Shinsou furrowed his brows.
“Yeah” Denki sighed. “I know. But half of it isn’t really my stuff to tell and the other half isn’t exactly worth talking about.”
“You sure? We could go grab one of your obnoxiously sweet coffees after work. Go to mine or yours, watch an old crappy horror.”
“Tempting. Thanks man. I would, really, but I got some stuff I have to do after work. Some other time maybe.”
Shinsou frowned. It was rare for the omega to turn down an invitation for a movie night. Hell, it was rare for Denki to turn down an invitation, end stop. It made him even more worried about his omega… friend. His omega friend. His friend who just so happens to be an omega. Hitoshi closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He really didn’t want to ruin the best friendship he had. But he couldn’t keep this up much longer. His alpha had decided on the electric blond long ago, and the omega’s unusual behavior and unhappy scent was driving him wild with the need to protect. He really needed to pull himself together and confess soon.
“Well, whenever you’re free then,” Shinsou said, reluctantly letting his hand fall from Denki’s shoulder. “You know my number.”
Denki nodded and looked up, giving him half a smile. “I do. Thanks Shinsou.”
Shinsou walked back to his desk, his mind made up. He needed to tell his omega how he felt, and soon.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Y/N twisted and turned, looking at herself in the mirror. It had been a very long time since she’d worn a yukata. It didn’t feel right to dress up like this. But wearing anything else also felt wrong. Everything about this date felt wrong. Like this was the kind of she she did in another life. And now here she was, going on a date with the man she loved. Who she’d always love. And who she’d already decided she was going to let go.
Y/N snorted and fussed with her hair a bit. Maybe she should have just refused this date. Claimed to be sick or something. But that felt wrong too. So, she just had to get through tonight. After all, what’s one more night of pretending everything is fine? Hopefully this could be a good memory from a relationship that just wasn’t meant to be. After tonight, she’d wait a couple days and then talk to Bakugou and let him go like he clearly wanted.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Katsuki was going to throw up.
He was going to throw up, right here, all over himself and all over shitty hair, too. His red headed friend was giving him a pep talk as he helped Bakugou into his jinbei. Not that Bakugou needed the help. Or the pep talk. It just was easier to let the squad come over when they had found out about his date. It’s not like he wanted them there or anything. Once Kiri, Mina, and Sero realized he was going to use this date to ask Y/N to be his mate, they had insisted on helping him get ready.
None of them knew about the little velvet box in his pocket and that his plans went further than just asking Y/N to be his mate. Bakugou bit his lip to keep from frowning as he looked over his friends, a certain loud blond conspicuously missing. You wouldn’t hear Katsuki admit it out loud, but he really wished Denki could have been here. He loved the others, and they were great in their own ways. But Denki was his pack’s other omega. He got it in a way that the others didn’t. After tonight, he’d have to make sure to catch Pikachu up on all the news. Hell, maybe he could help his fellow blond finally talk to that purple haired idiot he’d been mooning over for years. Everyone in the pack knew Denki’s family had been harping at him to settle down for quite a while.
Bakugou looked up in time to see Mina coming at him with the hair grease. He threw up his hands.
“Fuck no! Keep that shit away from me!”
“You’ve got to do something about that pile of straw you call a haircut. Besides, Wouldn’t it be nostalgic? Weren’t you interning for Best Jeanist again when you asked Y/N out the first time?”
“Yes, and I’d rather shave myself bald than ever have my hair like that again!”
Mina sighed. “Fine. We’ll do something else. But if I can’t slick it back, you will be wearing eyeliner!”
“IN YOUR DREAMS, PINKY!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You waited outside the entrance to the festival. It was strangely soothing to watch the people flow by, like you were a rock overlooking a stream. There were groups of friends, couples both young and old, families where the laughing children ran ahead of their parents eager to get inside. You gave a small smile at the last. Maybe that could be you someday, a parent getting to see a festival through the eyes of a child again. Though the mental picture was hazier than it used to be. The children you half imagined just blurs of colorful yukatas, instead of loud and stubborn blond haired brats with their father’s eyes and attitude. You huffed a quiet laugh to yourself as a thought occurred to you. If you and Kaminari actually went through with this plan, decent chance the kids would still be blond. The thought hurt a little.
“Y/N!”
You looked up and had the breath knocked out of your lungs.
Katsuki was beautiful. You knew it. Thought it often, even. But tonight he practically glowed. His hair had been tamed into a softer look than usual. The jinbei he wore was the perfect compliment to his skintone. Was that… Yes. Dark eyeliner made his crimson eyes pop. Your heart ached. You’d always love this man. No matter how it tore you apart, he’d always own part of your heart and soul. You smiled weakly and raised your hand in greeting.
“Hey. You look good.”
“Thanks.” Bakugou scratched the back of his head. “Mina got ahold of me.”
“That explains it then.”
“Hey!” Katsuki gently elbowed you in the side before taking his place next to you. “You saying I can’t dress up on my own?”
“Yes.”
“Y/N!” You dodged out of the way as he swatted at you, laughing. Yes. This could be it. One last good night.
“Shall we go in?” You asked, holding out your hand.
“That’s why we’re here, isn’t it?” Katsuki asked as he walked past you, ignoring your hand.
You gave a quiet smile as you followed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Katsuki picked at his food, none of it making it to his mouth. He was going to be sick. He was going to be sick right here and some paparazzi was going to see and take a picture and the big headline tomorrow was going to be “A Puke Worthy Proposal.” He was trying his best to keep up the illusion that everything was fine and normal, but it was rough. It had been a long time since he’d taken his alpha on even a normal date. And this wasn’t any normal date. It didn’t help that things were feeling forced and awkward.
He wanted to hold your hand, but his own hands were sweating buckets. He tried to keep up casual conversation, but that was getting harder and harder as the night wore on. Every sentence he wanted to just blurt it out and get it over with. It was impossible to keep talking about what vendors he recognized when all he wanted to say was “I love you and I’ll always love you and I want you by my side until the sun stops shining.”
It didn’t help that things felt awkward. Almost nothing was feeling easy or natural. It really had been far too long since the two of you had gone on any sort of date. He frowned as he thought about it. It had been over a year, at least. Longer, even. Well, he was going to have to fix that. He’d be able to use some of that pro hero paycheck and spoil you like you deserved. His Y/N. His mate. And soon, his wife.
Bakugou stared at nothing, his eyes going unfocus as he started daydreaming about how spectacular your wedding would be.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This was a disaster. You glanced over to where Bakugou stood picking at his food, looking bored. You’d been trying to keep up the conversation, but for the past several minutes you’d only gotten hums or grunts in response to anything you said.
“It’s amazing how they got all those pro heroes to dance nude as one of the main attractions this year.”
Katsuki grunted.
Yeah, he wasn’t paying attention at all.
You sighed, looking down at your own untouched food. You never should have agreed to come. At least this date was proving it to you. This had to end. The two of you didn’t know how to be a couple anymore. It was even clearer that Katsuki wasn’t even interested in trying. You had no idea why he wanted to have this date in the first place. Some bizarre sense of obligation? Maybe his heat had shaken him up enough that his omega needed the sense of normalcy? This issue was this wasn’t normal for the two of you anymore. It hadn’t been for a very long time. You sighed, glancing around for a trash can to oust you untouched dango.
A loud pop caused you to look up. The fireworks were about to start.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bakugou looked up at the sound of the first firework.
“Wanna head to the pier?”
You nodded quietly, following him as he led the way. He was sweating so much now that if he set himself off he’d take out half the city.
This was it. It was almost time. The two of you were going to watch the fireworks from the out of the way pier like you had all those years ago. It was at the end of that fireworks show the two of you had had your first kiss. And this time… Well this time at the end of the show he was going to propose and you were going to say yes, and it was going to be perfect.
That is if he didn’t barf before you two got there.
“Hurry up,” he grunted as he picked up the pace.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You tried not to flinch at Bakugou’s harsh tone. He clearly wanted to get this night over with even more than you did. You tried not to let it hurt.
The pier was empty as it always was. The lack of lighting keeping others away. The first time you had discovered it, it had felt hidden and intimate. Now it felt desolate. Lonely.
You walked up to the railing and stared at the sky. The fireworks didn’t feel magical anymore either. Your fingers wrapped around the railing as you glanced to the side. Bakugou wasn’t even looking up. He was staring at the reflections of flashes in the dark swirling water below.
You couldn’t do this anymore.
No more.
The fireworks illuminated you as your grip on the railing tightened until your knuckles turned white.
“Katsuki?”
“”What?” He asked roughly, barely glancing your way.
“Let’s break up.”

Hi! Oh man i loved your abo!jaydick GCG dick cheating with jason. Would you do more? I’m dying to know what happened afterwards.
No problem Anon! I hope this fulfils your needs!
After Freedom PRT II - JayDick / KaraDick
Contains: Omegaverse, Cheating Dick, Angst and mating cycles/in heat
The affair doesn't stop there.
Dick is drawn to Jason like a moth to a flame. At night in Kara's arms, he finds himself longing for the other alpha. Kara's gentle fondness being scorched away by Jason's lawless lust. He knows that nothing will come of it. That each forbidden tryst brings them closer to the end. Still, Dick knows that he will go back for more. Wanton and passionate in the brief moments he can steal.
He hears Kal cry in the cradle, the baby decidedly ready for another feeding. Dick's chest is sore from Jason's mouth earlier. He doesn't let that stop him from getting up, however. Not performing his omega duties would make Kara suspicious. Something he can't afford. Not after imprinting on Kal and certainly not after giving so much to his new family.
His alpha doesn't stir. She sleeps silently but does sigh as his warmth leaves the bed. She's stunning. Always has been and always will be. He drinks in the sweet serenity on her face. The beauty he finds is unearthly. How did he ever think this woman- his alpha had been human?
How did he ever think something this beautiful could love him?
His feet carry him to Kal with familiar ease. The nursery only right across the hall from their room. The second Dick peers over the edge the baby's wails come to a stifle. His chubby fingers reach up with a desperation that makes Dick's heart glow.
At least he never had to wonder how Kal felt about him. This incredible, marvellous child is his in every meaning of the word. He coos down at his fussing baby and gets a puppy whimper in return.
" Shh, Mama's here. "
He picks up Kal with care. Despite how tender his chest is, milk still swells to the surface. It's instincts. The same ones that made him lactate the first time he held the pup. Privately he nuzzles down into silky soft hair. The action earns him a huff. Kal clearly too hungry to enjoy the affection.
" It's okay Kal, I'm going to feed you right now. "
He makes his way over to the large nursing chair in the corner. It's one of the most luxurious things they own. The cushions are plush and support his back, while the bottom rocks with just a little movement. He's spent so many hours here. Not only feeding Kal but also reading to him and playing games.
A dark voice reminds him that he could lose this. That if he gets caught with Jason, it will jeopardize his claim over his pup. That Kara can take him away and Dick will be out with no pack and no one.
He swallows down the guilt and fear like a shot of whisky.
Once both he and Kal are comfortable, he pulls up his shirt and tucks it around his neck. He looks down into beautiful blue eyes. The pup nuzzling against the bare skin with fervency. It takes very little to lead him to a nipple and get him to latch on.
The relief that goes through him when the pup finally does is soothing. Kal is a vigorous eater. His little mouth nurses milk so quickly that some spills. Dick coos, tenderly brushing away stray droplets. It's uncomfortable but doesn't hurt which he's grateful for. Like this, he can enjoy Kal's serene expression and the sweet smell of content pup.
It melts his heart a little more. For a brief instant, he allows himself to imagine a little girl with blonde hair. Maybe with his blue eyes and Kara's complexion. Kal would be a wonderful big brother he's sure and Kara- well she's already an incredible alpha. What would be one more pup to their family?
For a while content, suckling sound keeps him busy. His awareness entirely on the adorable baby in his arms. It doesn't take long to shift, however. Not with the way soft black, curls and wide blue eyes make him think of Jason.
He's sure this is what their pup would look like.
How many times has Jason whispered this fantasy in his ear? How long did it take for the idea to take root in his very core? Thinking of Kara and his child has always been a thing. Since Dick's taken on the omega role in the pack, it's always been a possibility.
When did he start thinking of Jason with that kind of possibility too?
A content whine draws him out of his daydream. Kal tilting to the side clearly done. Dick smiles and shifts the baby over his shoulder so he can burp him. It takes very little to get him to do so. A few light taps and Kal is comfortable and sleepy once again.
Dick never thought he could be a mother, let alone such a good one. He feels pride at the way he'd managed to give himself over to this role. Once Kal is fast asleep, Dick carefully takes him back to his crib. He stands over the cradle afterwards. Just staring at this beautiful, wonderful child that he's been given. He doesn't realize how long he's standing there until slivers of sunlight come through the curtains. He swallows the uncertainty that comes with it.
" You're up early. "
Kara's warm arms encircle him from behind. Pulling him into a steady embrace that makes him feel secure. He doesn't let his eyes leave Kal, but he does reach back to touch her. The alpha tangles their fingers before bringing them to her mouth to kiss.
" Kal was hungry. "
Is all he offers. Kara accepts it without question. She nuzzles into his neck and draws in deep breaths of his scent. It's intimate and tender. Typically Dick would preen under this attention. Now all he feels is guilt curling in his gut.
" You smell good. Your heat must be coming up. "
Dick licks his lips. It's rare for Kara to mention his heat. At least in this context. There's a dark murmur in her voice that sounds almost possessive. Like an alpha claim that he's never gotten before. A hopeful part of him swells.
" Yea- next week. Lois said she'd watch Kal for me. "
He swallows. Choosing his next words carefully.
" Do you want to spend it together?"
Turning up the omega charm, Dick looks down through his lashes. Pressing his curves against her in a way he hopes is suggestive. The action makes Kara step back. The loss of her heat lets him know the rejection is coming before she speaks.
We can't
" We can't. "
We aren't in a stable place.
" We aren't in a stable place. "
We need to focus on Kal.
" We need to focus on Kal-"
Dick stops her. They've had this conversation so many times. Why they can't cross the line. Why they can't take it any further. New Gotham needs Super Girl, she needs to stay focused. He's tired of the excuses. Tired of being pushed to the side.
" That's not enough to make a relationship work Kara."
The alpha tenses. The air around her visibly shifts the atmosphere. Her posture is defensive. The same way it always is when they talk about this.
" What's that supposed to mean? "
God, they were going to argue. What Dick wouldn't give to not fight about this for once.
" It means that I have needs too. That you have responsibilities to more than just new Gotham."
Kara's eyes flit away, unable to keep eye contact. He knows she loves being a hero. He's glad that she can make a difference and help people. Still, why is it every morning she leaves his mouth feels tastes bitter. It isn't enough anymore. She leaves him in charge of taking care of the house while she takes care of New Gotham but then who takes care of him?
" You don't- "
His voice cracks before he can continue. Emotion thick in his throat. He can't bring himself to say it. How can he be honest when what they have is already so delicate? He curls in on himself and takes a step back. Something about his demeanour cools Kara off. Her gaze softens.
" What, What don't I do Dickie? "
God, he just wants things between them to be good. Like a customary alpha and omega pair. Like a proper pack. The emotions bubble inside of him until their spilling out of his eyes. He can't bring himself to say the words. Can't bring himself to ask for what he needs.
All it takes is a soft hand taking his for him to break. For him to confess.
" You don't treat me like your omega..."
It feels too quiet to convey everything swirling around inside of him. The guilt, resentment and fear. Emotions that have been slowly poisoning him every day and making it harder and harder to be alive.
He feels oh so tired.
Understanding blooms in Kara's eyes for the first time since they've gotten together. She reaches out for him with warm hands that burn. Drawing him into an embrace that shatters his walls. Tears of defeat fall involuntarily.
" Oh, Dick. Oh, Dickie, I'm so sorry I've been a terrible alpha to you."
The sympathy of her tone makes him sob.
" I'm so sorry Dick you're right. I don't share your heats, I don't help you with Kal, I don't take care of you... "
She’s shorter than him so he has to duck into her. Hiding his wet face into her fragrant neck. She strokes his hair with care. Whispering apologies that make his heart full. Then murmuring promises he finds himself believing.
" I'll do better alright? How about I spend the 3rd day with you. I can't stay for the entire thing- but I'll at least be there for when it gets really bad. "
Dick's arms squeeze around her shoulders. He hesitantly smiles into her warmth. Enjoying the embrace and vibrations of her soft alpha rumble. His heats have always been dreadful. He wouldn't mind them having their first time then. During the height when he's most sensitive and desperate. The thought draws a wavering purr from his throat.
" Yea? you mean it?"
Kara hovers enough to brush their noses together. Her touch is soft and comforting. She holds his face in her hands. Soothing his broken heart with care.
" I mean it. "
He believes her without question, swallowing down his bitter confessions of betrayal on his tongue. How could he let Jason lead him away from this? Why did he doubt Kara would understand? Why didn't he just talk to her in the beginning?
They stay like that for a while. Gently holding each other until Kal stirs. When he does, It's the alpha who picks him up. Taking Dick by his hand and leading the omega to the kitchen.
They would be alright. Dick just needs to trust her.
After they make arrangements for his heat, Dick makes a vigorous effort to avoid Jason Todd. He goes to the market in New Gotham even though it's further. He doesn't go back to Big Al's and generally keeps away from where he can usually find the alpha.
After all, Kara has bought him a trunk full of nesting material for their first time. He, himself has gone to the doctor to get a birth control shot. Everything's right on schedule to happen. He doesn't want to mess this up. He doesn't need any unnecessary distractions.
" Wing! "
The voice is loud enough to carry over the park. Dick finds himself shifting his hold on Kal, his steps becoming long. He has no hope at outrunning the alpha, but he tries anyway. Jason cuts him off with physical effort. The man outright sprinting.
" Jason. "
He hopes it comes across as cold and indifferent. He clutches Kal to his bosom but has to loosen when the pup whines. His heart is pounding in his chest. Memories flood to the surface and drown his lungs. His pup, as if picking up his distress, starts to whine.
" You shouldn't be here. "
Jason ignores it. Dick hates how relieved the alpha looks. He can tell from the open body language that a heavy, weight is taken off of him. He doesn't want to think about what that means. Looking too deeply into Jason's affection means losing the nerve to chose his family.
To his credit, the man does keep his distance. Blue-Green eyes look at Dick to the baby, then back at him. It makes him feel uncomfortable. It's almost as if he's exposing his pup to his infidelity. To his disloyalty.
" I know, I'm sorry you just disappeared. I didn't know if you were alright. "
Dick closes in on himself. It's this that drew him into the alpha. The concern, the caring, the attention. Of course, it had been too easy to fall for him. He had been broken before, desperate and wanting. Not now though, now he can still feel the burning weight of Kara's words. They ground him and stop him from leaning into temptation.
" I'm fine. You don't need to worry about me anymore. "
The words are thick in his mouth. His tongue feels heavy. It's nothing he can't handle. Not when he and Kara are finally going to fix things.
" I-I'm spoken for. "
Alpha possession flashes in Jason's eyes but quickly retreats. Dick doesn't look into it. He doesn't want to acknowledge the sorrow, the heartbreak. The man gives him a teasing smile. Here, in the light of day and away from the bar, he can see it for what it is, self-conscious.
A facade.
" She can't give you what I can. "
Dick doesn't waver.
" You're right, she'll give me more. "
Jason tenses, his back straight and eyes searching. Dick can see the disappointment in the clench of his jaw and the tightness of his fist. Still, he stands across from him. Trying not to let the sudden burst of emotion make him hesitate.
" Yea? Well, whenever this phase of hers fizzles out. Whenever your little pack falls apart again. Don't think you can come back to me. Don't think I'll take you back. "
The words hurt more than Dick wants to admit. Though he knows that this has gone on way longer than it ever should have. Jason had been a fantasy, an idea that made him feel better about himself. This had all be a mistake.
" I was never yours, to begin with. "
Jason's jerks, recoiling from the words like a physical blow. The barely concealed pain there is hard to stomach.
There are people all around them in the park. Thankfully, no one he knows. The display earns them a few brief glances. Nothing to be worried about. The audience seems to make Jason restless. The alpha struggles, the attention clearly making him uncomfortable.
" You'll eat those words, and it won't be me who feeds them to you. "
Dick rolls his shoulders back. " I won't."
The only other time he's seen Jason quite this red is in the bedroom. Embarrassment and shame roll off of him. Nearly masking the subtle scent of pain and anguish. It makes Dick feel at least a little guilty. He should have never led the alpha on.
Somewhere deep inside he had known it wasn't just sex. The promises and touches that offered more had been genuine. Just as real as Jason's constant offers to run away with him.
The alpha leaves just as quickly as he came. Stocking off to his bike, and getting on with a rough heavy-handedness he's never seen. The machine roars to life and Jason tears off loud enough to draw the attention of everyone nearby. The noise is deafening. Ripping a cry from the small pup in his arms.
Dick soothes Kal. Rocking him while pressing soft kisses to his scalp. Long after Jason is out of sight, he keeps crying.
At least the worst part was over with, maybe now they both could move on.
The journey back home is exhausting. Dick finds himself falling apart before he even gets through the door. He pushes on to get Kal ready for his nap. The baby needs it, maybe he does too.
He bathes, changes and feeds Kal on autopilot. He needs time to emotionally decompress, a break. The second his pup settles down in the cradle he gets it.
Jason's words replay in his mind on a loop. His face is vivid in Dick's memory. The guilt rises in his throat like bile. Making him feel dirty and beaten. He's wrong. Kara loves him, she wants him. Jason just wants to mess things up, to make Dick doubt so they can go back to their previous arrangement.
" Don't come back to me. "
Dick strips out of his clothing. The sudden need for a shower making his skin crawl. He reminds himself that he's done a good thing today. That working on things with his pack alpha is way more important than a rouge alpha. His family needs his mind and heart here.
Once he gets under the hot spray, tension starts to bleed from his body. It's a small comfort, one that he isn't afraid to bask in for a moment. He needs to focus on the positives. Like his upcoming heat in two days.
He could process all of this after. When he's feeling a little more stable in his and Kara's relationship. A small smile comes to his lips at the thought. They were fixing things.
Dick manages to throw himself into his chores to keep himself busy from any thoughts of Jason Todd. The closer he gets to his heat, the more excitement bubbles in his chest. He's adjusted all the furniture in the master bedroom three times now. He wants everything to be perfect for his and Kara's first time.
He's never been one for nest building, but he tries his hands at it anyway. It's a little messy and full of colours that clash, but he loves it. It smells like them and their home. It's warm and safe. Moreover lying in it makes Dick's blood hum. He feels blessed.
The moment the well-known itch of heat starts to break out on his skin he's ready. He spends the first two days satisfying and touching himself to ideas of Kara. Of her firm hands and sunshine scent. His thighs tremble with the knowledge the soon she'll be inside him. A more optimistic part of him yearns for her bite.
He tries not to get too caught up, but he does allow himself a few smaller fantasies. One's that leave him panting in the middle of the pretty nest of fabric. By the time the third day comes his skin is nearly searing. He's so worked up with keen excitement that he finds himself throbbing for it.
It takes a lot of discipline not to touch further, to deny himself in anticipation for Kara. For her touch, for her hands and for her knot. He whines into one of her jackets. Drawing in her scent by the lungfuls. He can't believe he's so close to getting everything he wants.
Dick doesn't realize she's hasn’t come until the last day. His body trembling against sweat and tear, soaked fabric. His first moment of clarity is terrifying.
Jason was right.

Need You Tonight
Chapter 3 Warnings: No explicit content, but references adult themes; A/B/O dynamics, but NO male pregnancy, or any pregnancy Note: This may be chapter 3/3, but this isn’t the last of omegaverse! I made a series on AO3, since I don’t have a linear story in mind, but I do intend to do other oneshots and snippets in this universe too (Here’s the AO3 link)
———
After days of intense, heat-charged sex, Ignis awoke one morning with Gladio pressed close to him, arm draped around his middle. As Ignis began to stir and slip to the edge of the bed, the alpha automatically tugged him back and leaned in to kiss on Ignis’ neck.
“Need something?” Gladio muttered softly.
“Yes. A shower,” Ignis groaned and shoved the other man away.
But somehow, Gladio kept watching him with those sultry bedroom eyes. “Want me to join you again?”
“No, thank you,” Ignis sighed. “You needn’t trouble yourself any longer.”
It was a kind gesture for Gladio to still offer help, even if the heat was over, but Ignis couldn’t allow himself to forget that this was just one friend helping another through an inconvenience, and nothing more. There was still a vague, lingering instinct to remain in bed with the alpha, but for the most part, the hormones had died down enough that he could exercise better self control and common sense to push any emotions to the back of his mind.
The warm water felt so good as it coursed over Ignis’ body. By now, he had plenty of sore muscles from all the rough, physical exertion the past few days. He was glad to finally be able to relax and actually enjoy the shower alone, without the other man’s massive form taking up so much space.
But still, as Ignis scrubbed himself with soap, his mind wandered and he couldn’t help but think about how well Gladio had taken care of him, making sure he was fed and stayed fairly clean. Ignis remembered how they showered together, Gladio’s strong hands rubbing the mess away, and the way he made Ignis feel so good with just his tongue…
The omega could feel his blood begin rushing to his groin at the memory. Though, he chose to simply ignore it and turned the faucet a little bit colder until he finished his shower.
Once Ignis was finally done, he dried himself off and wrapped a towel around his waist as he returned to the bedroom. Gladio was missing, as expected, but the lack of sheets on his bed was a surprise. The soft churning of the washing machine from the next room over confirmed that Gladio must have thrown them in the wash. Again, Ignis didn’t understand why the alpha continued to show that extra consideration, but he did appreciate the gesture.
He quickly dressed himself and left the bedroom to find that the alpha hadn’t actually left at all. Gladio was still there, in Ignis’ kitchen, leaning against the counter and dressed in nothing but his boxers.
Ignis pinched the bridge of his nose with a sigh and averted his gaze. “Where are your clothes?”
“In the wash. Figured I’d throw your sheets in too.” The coffee maker gave a little beep, and Gladio turned away to pour a couple mugs.
Since this did happen so suddenly, Gladio had just the one set of clothes, so Ignis thought it was fair that he would want to wash them. Without arguing further, he simply grabbed his coffee and sat down at the small dining table.
“I was short with you this morning. I apologize,” Ignis cooly spoke after taking a sip of his drink.
“Don’t sweat it.” Gladio casually waved a hand as he drank from his own cup, still leaning against the counter.
“Nonetheless, I ought to thank you for all you’ve done.”
“It was my pleasure. Literally,” Gladio replied with a sly grin. “But seriously, I don’t know how you’ve been getting through those heats all by yourself, without an alpha.”
Ignis returned the sly grin as he glanced over his mug at Gladio. “Who said there’s never been another alpha?”
The look on the swordsman’s face was priceless. A deep wrinkle set in between Gladio’s eyes and his eyes widened in a mix of surprise and jealousy. Typical alpha mentality - already possessive over an omega after just one heat. It was amusing, at least for now. Ignis knew he had to be careful that it wouldn’t grow into something more serious.
“Well, whoever it was, I don’t see him around now,” Gladio pointed out. He set down his mug and rested a hand on the table, leaning over Ignis. “I’m here, and happy to help when that next heat hits you again.”
Ignis rolled his eyes and brushed off the suggestion as more typical alpha behavior. All they ever seemed to care about was finding a heat-crazed omega for a few days of fun. He almost said it aloud, but Gladio cut in again.
“Or maybe,” the alpha leaned in closer, lowering his voice to mutter in Ignis’ ear, “we don’t have to wait for the next heat.”
The omega responded with a light shove. “What are you implying?”
Gladio stood upright, but remained close. “Implying? Nothing. I’m straight-up telling you this doesn’t have to be exclusive to your heat.”
“That’s quite an assumption that I’ll even agree to this my next heat, let alone suggest this could be a regular thing,” Ignis spoke in a stern voice as he shot the other man a stern glare.
Observant as Ignis usually could be, he somehow managed to be a bit oblivious when it came to romance. Gladio seemed to blatantly show interest in the omega, yet Ignis brushed it off as lingering after-effects of the heat. A man like Gladio showing genuine interest in him just seemed too good to be true, so Ignis chose not to believe it.
Gladio looked over Ignis with a look of confusion. “I just thought we–” He paused, slightly taken aback as if he wasn’t used to rejection. “You had a good time, didn’t you?”
“It was a heat, Gladio,” Ignis sighed. “None of this was real. It was all pheromones and instinct.”
The alpha took a step back, as though Ignis’ words dealt a physical blow. But the omega couldn’t entirely resist the disappointment in his eyes, so he decided to give Gladio a bit of placation. “Give it a few days, make sure the effects from the heat have totally worn off, and then we can have a discussion if you still feel the same way.”
Gladio gave a confident nod. “If that’s what it takes.”
There seemed to be a slight tension in the air after that conversation. Ignis cooked them a proper breakfast and Gladio threw his clothes in the dryer. They tried their best to continue conversation as usual, discussing various books Gladio noticed on Ignis’ shelf, or talking about the Prince’s development, but both men were still noticeably distracted. Thankfully, Gladio’s clothes didn’t take very long to dry, and the alpha left with a simple, casual goodbye.
It seemed so anticlimactic after the past few days, but Ignis knew it was all for the best. Life could continue as normal for now, and for the most part, it did. His path didn’t cross much with Gladio, but when it did, they simply acknowledged one another with a casual nod, then continued about their own business.
But just when Ignis began to feel settled that there would be no complications after his heat, he returned to his apartment one evening to find a bouquet of flowers waiting at his door. Flustered that his neighbors might see, he quickly scooped up the bouquet and hurried inside.
A quick examination easily revealed a note attached to the flowers:
”Guess it’s time for that conversation.” –G
Feeling the heat rise to his face, Ignis quickly slipped his phone out of his pocket and immediately dialed the alpha.
“About time,” Gladio answered on the other line. Ignis could hear that self-satisfied grin in the alpha’s voice.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Ignis snapped. “I thought I had made myself clear.”
“Uh, yeah?” Gladio agreed in a bewildered tone. “You said give it a few days, and here we are.”
“Gladio…” Ignis took a deep breath to collect himself before he continued, “Whatever this is, you don’t need to feel responsible for me, nor do you owe me anything. This doesn’t have to be complicated.”
“Is that what you think? That I see you as some kind of obligation?” The swordsman’s voice took on a more annoyed tone.
“Do not forget your first responsibility is to Noctis, as is mine,” Ignis continued. “I won’t allow either of us to become distracted from our royal duties.”
“First, you said it was just because of the heat, now you’re saying it’s too much of a distraction,” Gladio grumbled. “You and I both know those are bullshit excuses.”
“Nonetheless, that is how I feel. It’s best for both of us if we continue business as usual and forget this ever happened.”
“Unbelievable,” Gladio’s voice growled, followed by the sound of the call ending.
Ignis only felt slightly guilty for upsetting Gladio, but he had convinced himself that this really was for the best. He knew better than to get his hopes up, so there would be less trouble if he just ended this before it even began. It was difficult, but Gladio hanging up so suddenly was a good sign that perhaps he realized it was time to give up.
A few minutes after the call, however, an urgent knocking at Ignis’ door pulled him away from the report he had begun to look over. He cautiously opened the door, unsure what could warrant such eager knocking, but as soon as he peeked through the crack, Gladio burst inside.
Ignis might have even fallen over, but the alpha immediately hooked an arm around his waist. Gladio’s free hand cupped the younger man’s cheek as he hungrily pressed their lips together in an eager kiss. The omega nearly melted in his arms, but Ignis quickly snapped to his senses. He gave the other man a rough shove and broke free from his grasp with an angry glare.
“Gladiolus Amicitia!” he hissed. “What is the meaning of this?”
The swordsman looked at him with his usual cocky grin. “I’m not good at taking ‘no’ for an answer.”
Ignis scoffed. “I’m certain there are plenty other men and women who would welcome your attentions.”
“You don’t remember, do you?” The confused look on Ignis’ face was enough of an answer for Gladio as he continued, “Right when your heat really kicked in, you said you’ve wanted me for a long time. Here I am, and you’re kicking me to the curb.”
Ignis folded his arms and glanced to the side with a huff.
“You said it could never work ‘cause I need to continue the family line,” Gladio reminded him. “To hell with that, and every other bullshit excuse you’ve given. Guess you also forgot the part where I said I’ve had my eye on you for a while too. This isn’t ‘cause of the heat, and I don’t see you as an obligation, or distraction, or anything else you wanna throw at me. Look me in the eye and tell me you’re not interested. I’m not accepting anything else.”
Ignis did look him in the eyes. He took a deep breath, but just couldn’t bring himself to say those words. After all he had done to convince himself that this was the right thing to do, it was so much more difficult to resist the alpha when he stood right there in front of Ignis, looking so intently at him with those golden eyes.
Seeing Ignis’ hesitation, Gladio felt even more encouraged to urge him further, “Yeah, those few days together were great, but it was just carnal instinct. I don’t want to just be there for your heat. I want something real.”
As Ignis listened, his eyes widened in disbelief. He almost felt as though he needed to pinch himself, just to make sure he wasn’t dreaming. “I don’t understand. You could have anyone you want.”
“Apparently not.” The swordsman folded his arms in annoyance. “There’s only one person I want, and he keeps shooting me down.”
Ignis could feel his resolve steadily crumbling away. Gladio’s persistence and earnest entreaties had proven impossible to resist. The omega’s face softened to a gentle smile as he replied, “You don’t seem the type to give up so easily. Perhaps you should ask once more.”
Gladio’s eyes lit up at the suggestion. “Ignis,” he grinned, “how’s dinner sound? Tomorrow night?”
“Dinner would be lovely,” the omega finally conceded.
As Gladio gave a relieved sigh, Ignis moved close once again and planted a gentle kiss to the older man’s lips. Before Gladio could take things any further, Ignis backed away with a finger pressed to the other man’s lips.
“Enough for today,” Ignis explained as he pulled his hand away. “I must finish preparing a report for Noctis.”
“You spoil him too much,” Gladio chastised, but couldn’t wipe the grin off his face.
“I’ll see you tomorrow night,” Ignis concluded as he ushered his guest to the door.
Gladio seemed satisfied enough to leave without any further complaints. Although Ignis did have a report to finish reading, he found that he had trouble focusing after that conversation. He felt giddy as a schoolboy, but even when he actually was a schoolboy, Ignis never really felt this way about anyone before.
Aside from his heat, he realized he never really had much physical affection from anyone, either. Sex during his heat was a relief, of course, but that simple kiss from Gladio a moment ago felt more than just physically comforting. It was a sort of touch that Ignis had no idea he had been missing, and now that he had a taste, he craved being closer to the other man, but it was a completely different craving than what he felt during a heat. It was difficult for him to describe, but there was an odd feeling in his chest that ached, yet felt so good at the same time.
After a while, the screen on Ignis’ phone lit up as he received a text. A wide grin spread over his face when he saw it was from Gladio.
”Is 1900 good for tomorrow?”
The way Gladio used military time out of habit was such a simple thing, yet Ignis found it oddly endearing. He sent an agreeable reply and finally set the report aside, deciding to finally give up and get ready for bed.
As apprehensive as Ignis had felt going into this situation, he had suddenly become filled with warm thoughts and excitement for the following evening. If this relationship felt so good already, then maybe it was worth giving it a try, after all.
