Personal update

It's been a while since I wrote a longer personal post, so here we go. Long wall of text incoming!

I am not focused on making patterns so much as I am trying to make a tutorial on making them. Yesterday, I dived into making an explanatory animation and editing a short video clip I recorded. But adding transitions, titles, hints, etc, that stuff takes AGES. I have definitely gained a new level of respect for YouTubers!

Generally, I struggle a lot to get into any project and keep working on it. I'm 95% sure I have ADHD because the struggles I face are textbook ADHD. I have watched a lot of videos recently on ADHD, and especially also how symptoms manifest in women. I was the kid who always daydreamed in school. Who would go "ssssh!" angrily to classmates who were giggling/disrupting, because I got so distracted by it. I had to put all my energy into paying attention. I studied for tests on the last day or during the break before the lesson because I had no motivation beforehand. I had a hard time doing homework, I was just not motivated to do it and made a lot of careless mistakes too, especially with maths.

TBH, I've always felt really bad about showing so many WIPS and getting people's hopes up, and whenever I promise to get them done in a certain timeframe I meant what I said. But I often disappoint myself and you guys too because I often cannot pick up or work on a project. I know I want to finish it and that it would get me a satisfying feeling and probably praise from you guys, but it's still not enough motivation. It's like there is an invisible barrier and I cannot get through it. I often do not know myself why I can't do it. Whenever I do manage to pick up a project, I often have a good experience and at least make some progress on it. But it does not mean the next time is any easier 😭

I have some projects that are almost done, and there is just a little something to do and I just cannot bring myself to finish them. It's really frustrating. I have periods where I can just go with the flow and pick up whatever I can do and do not agonize as much about not being able to tackle bigger projects. But the tutorial project is one of the few goals I set for myself this year, and the year is more than half over already. I want to finally make some progress!

I realized why I am good at making patterns: They take a short amount of time, often between 15 minutes and 4 hours depending on the complexity, though most I can finish in an hour. I do not have to wait long until I can first test the new CC in my game, which is generally a very gratifying experience., since most of the time, the patterns are fine. But whenever they need to be tweaked again, I tend to put that off. It's really hard to pick them up because the gratification is not as high as the initial loading up. My brain is just not getting a high enough dose of dopamine from it, and it's like nope, why bother.

I also get into phases of hyperfocus, and in those, I can work 8 hours straight on a mesh, but once that streak is over... well, RIP WIP. And I can never finish a meshing project in one go. The base mesh might be finished, but then I need to make LODs, morphs, the textures... I often spend an initial 8 hours on one creation, and 20 more to revise stuff later on. I am also bad at judging how much time something takes, with some of my projects it's probably more like 40 hours that went into them already. Most notably a project I titled Exquisite Comfort Sweater. I have revised it 3 times I think, and I am still not done or satisfied with it:

The problems are not obvious from screenshots, there are texture flaws (which can be hidden nicely with patterns, and since the pattern tiling is so good I have used that cardigan often as a way to preview my patterns), but also bone and morph problems. I would not want to release a creation that is broken in my eyes. It might still work for posing and screenshots, but I want people to be able to play with my creations and not get distracted by terrible bone assignments. With this example, the custom bulky sleeves are what create a problem with the bones and morphs. They are just too different from EA's stuff and there is no good reference to clone those from. Hence I need to do manual edits, but that also involves a lot of trial and error. I recently learned how to tweak the bones manually in Blender, so I know I have the tools I need to elevate that to the level where I wanted it all along. But motivating myself to open that blender file still seems impossible.

My perfectionism compels me to enter a loop of creating, testing, seeing something I do not like, and having to do the cycle all over again. Because often, fixing a tiny thing also means I have to redo morphs,. LODS, textures, it takes ages to fix something. And then if I still don't like it, I have to do it a third time. Once my hyperfocus is over, the thing is just left in whatever state it was when I stopped.

I cannot bear to throw away any of my works in progress, because I do go back to some of them sometimes. But it really only happens very rarely that I finish something.

I spend a lot of time meshing and creating stuff, but it just never gets to a releasable state. So I probably have the same experience as someone who has published 100 meshes but I just have nothing to show for it. It sucks so much 😭

And I have been wanting to make tutorials about creating CC for AGES. In the past, I've written down written ones on a whim, but this time, I want to make video tutorials, because most people find them easier to grasp and more digestible. I have good ideas, and I have the knowledge to pass on, it really makes me sad to see so many people wanting to create CC but struggling to find good tutorials and resources. I want to help, I have the knowledge, but I struggle so much with getting things done. I start and I get overwhelmed. I get lost in details. My anxiety perks up. To say this is frustrating is an understatement. Whenever I publish a pattern collection, it feels as huge as writing a term paper. And I feel proud of myself when it is done and out, but it also exhausts me. I really wish I could put out content more frequently. That it wasn't such a huge deal, such a struggle.

I hardly even make goals anymore because most I never reach anyway, because I cannot walk that road. It's like I get off the path and get horribly lost.

And I really am sorry about not being able to keep promises. I often don't even mention stuff I am working on, but I sometimes do need the input/dopamine from my lovely blog readers to keep going.

I think if I declare a deadline, that will help me finish a project. It sometimes works, but then sometimes it does not. And it sometimes makes me want to write "unreliable" in my tumblr profile, but that feels so harsh and I need to show compassion toward myself if I want to make progress.

Lately, I have watched a lot of "tips and strategies for ADHD" videos. One video addressed something very important: the fact that people with ADHD can get bored with a certain strategy and then it just does not work anymore. So I cannot trust a habit to work forever, because out of the blue, that trusty strategy may just stop working.

Finding strategies that work is difficult, and getting into a new habit is even harder. I feel like life is rigged against me and my struggles are mostly unseen because my wins are not flashy at all. For me, cleaning my apartment is a big deal. Taking a walk with my best friends 2 times a week feels like a full week. We even go when it's raining. Two years ago, I would never thought this possible, but this shows me that I am making progress. The progress is just in areas that remain unseen, that do not produce big results, nothing to put in a resume, or in a portfolio.

I'm writing all this because I have been especially upset and frustrated with my inability to work lately. And I'm sad that I cannot create the resources for you the way I want to. That everything takes me so much longer than I anticipated. That I make promises that I cannot keep.

I need to get my frustrations out of my system so I can focus on small wins and hope they eventually add up to a big one.

Full Gear preview

Jon Moxley vs. Orange Cassidy - This is Moxley's first defense of the AEW men's world title since he won it on October 12. For the past couple of months, Mox has been at war with everything AEW stands for, which basically means every week he pulls up in a truck with his squad and they beat up a bunch of wrestlers. Orange, who is famously too cool to get worked up about anything, tried to stay out of it. Then on October 23, Mox's faction attacked Cassidy's old friend Chuck Taylor, so it's on now.

Officially this is not a no-disqualification match, but I expect it to turn ugly real quick. Mox is looking to show that guys like Cassidy aren't hungry and vicious enough to hang with him, and he'll fight dirty to prove it. All his goons--Marina Shafir, Claudio Castagnoli, PAC, and Orange's former friend Wheeler Yuta--are bound to interfere. However, Cassidy has insisted his own allies stay out of the fight. I assume his game plan is to take a hellacious beating and keep getting back up. I just don't think that's a very good idea.

Moxley's title reign is clearly a long-term direction and the centerpiece of AEW's storytelling for the foreseeable future. They're building him up to set up the question of who will find a way to knock him down and claim the promotion's top prize. But with a story like that, you can't blow it off with the very first title match. Cassidy is not the guy to save everyone from Moxley. Rather, he's the guy who's going to get clobbered to death to make us wonder: if he can't do it, who can? So yeah, get ready to watch Orange get mugged.

Mercedes Mone vs. Kris Statlander - Mone's AEW TBS championship is on the line; her STRONG women's title is not. Two months ago, when Statlander was feuding with Willow Nightingale, I figured Willow would win the feud since the women's champions are all heels and they need to heat up a babyface challenger. Instead Stat won the feud, and just kind of lowkey turned face for no reason except to chase Mone. I'm not sure what they were thinking with that.

The general vibe of this feud is that Mercedes is pulling out all of her usual heel tricks, but none of them are working. In particular, her big heater Kamille has been especially useless in neutralizing Kris, to the point that there's tension within that alliance. I suppose the story could lead to the foregone conclusion, and Statlander could steamroll over Mone. But I think it's far more likely that Mercedes is being backed into a corner until she produces a new trick, like maybe another henchwoman or something. I'd bet on the champ to retain.

Jack Perry vs. Daniel Garcia - Perry defends the AEW TNT championship. Garcia has been chasing him for about a month now. That chase is partly about the gold (or, uh, cast iron, or whatever that belt is made of). But it's also about Garcia's devotion to AEW, and his disgust that Perry and the rest of the Elite have done nothing about Jon Moxley's team attacking everybody. Danny thinks Jack's "scapegoat" act is a load of crap. Jack keeps insisting Danny will never live up to his potential until he, like Jack, lets go of his simplistic good-versus-evil morality.

It feels like Garcia has gotten the better of Jack in every single one of their encounters. Hell, the go-home promo involved Danny kidnapping Jack, tying him to a chair, and threatening to beat him to death with a crowbar. It's satisfying, since Jack is a prick and he's usually one step ahead of the babyfaces. And yet, it seems too easy. I think it's about time for Perry to drop this belt, and for Garcia to win a title. But something tells me Jack is going to get his heat back here, like maybe Danny will start to do a sick spot, and hesitate long enough to lose the match. I'm pick Perry to retain, reluctantly.

MJF vs. Roderick Strong - MJF turned babyface last year because he befriended Adam Cole. Roddy turned heel because he couldn't convince Cole that Max wasn't really a good friend. Then Cole turned heel on MJF, to align with Roddy in the Undisputed Kingdom. Then Max turned heel in July, so when Cole returned from injury the entire Undisputed Kingdom had to turn face to keep the storyline going. So now Roddy wants revenge on Max for...uh...I have no idea why.

The real destination here is MJF vs. Cole, but it's too soon to go directly to that. So this match is surely about Max antagonizing Cole by doing something really terrible to his friend. I don't know what MJF will do to Roddy, but I figure he'll start by defeating him.

Konosuke Takeshita vs. Ricochet - This is for the AEW international title. Takeshita won the belt from Will Ospreay, but it was a three-way match with Ricochet, who wasn't pinned, so now he wants a one-on-one match. This should be good, although I'm not fond of the lazy storytelling of using a three-way match to pivot from one feud to another. Ricochet should probably win this belt at some point but they've got something good here with Takeshita, I would keep it on him for a while longer.

Swerve Strickland vs. Bobby Lashley - Lashley is a 20-year veteran best known for his two runs in WWE, although there's a ten-year gap between those runs where he mainly did MMA and wrestled for TNA and stuff. Arguably the strongest gimmick Lashley ever had was being the top guy in the Hurt Business faction in 2020-2022, so now he's bringing it back as the Hurt Syndicate. They tried to recruit Swerve, but he turned them down, so now they're gonna hurt him.

Lashley pretty much has to win, but I think they should do something to protect Swerve. I suppose MVP and Shelton Benjamin could interfere, but what would really go down smooth is to reveal a new member of the Hurt Syndicate. MVP has been handing out business cards for weeks, and it'd be nice if someone actually answered his invitation.

Will Ospreay vs. Kyle Fletcher - These two were best friends until Fletcher turned on Ospreay last month, costing him the international title. The loose end that holds my attention is Fletcher's former tag team partner Mark Davis, who just recently returned from an injury and has sided with Ospreay against Fletcher. I keep thinking they're setting up Davis to do his own turn, and this would be the time and place to do it. On paper it seems like Will should win, but I gotta think he in real life he really wants to help his buddy get over, so I'm picking Kyle to win.

Adam Page vs. Jay White - This is a rematch from October 12, where White beat Page. There isn't much of a reason for Page to keep feuding with White except that Page's heel gimmick is that he can't let anything go. So I'm not sure how this can get settled without turning into a dollar-store version of the Page vs. Swerve Strickland feud. I suppose Hangman could just win this time, but why didn't they just do that the first time? I'm not sure what the goal is here, so I guess I'll have to watch the match to find out.

Isiah Kassidy & Marq Quen vs. Truth Magnum & Turbo Floyd vs. Malakai Black & Brody King vs. Max Caster & Anthony Bowens - This is a four-way match, with Kassidy and Quen defending the AEW tag team title. Each team gets a corner, but only two men can legally be in the ring at any time. The legal men can tag anyone in any corner. The first man to score a fall on any opponent will win the match and the title for his team.

I'm excited for the Outrunners (Floyd and Magnum) to get this spot after months of working their way up from the bottom. I'm interested to see how this match factors into the ongoing tension between Caster and Bowens. And just about anything with Black and King in it is bound to be good. Anyone could win this match and I'd be fine with it. But Private Party just won the tag title three weeks ago, after years of not quite reaching the brass ring. It's simply too soon for Zay and Quen to drop the belts. My guess is they'll pin one of the Outrunners, although you can't rule out Bowens or Caster getting rolled up to add to their frustrations.

AJ Befumo vs. QT Marshall - This is scheduled for the pre-show. If I remember right, QT left AEW but then quietly returned in a backstage role, leaving him free to wrestle elsewhere. I assume he's in the ring tonight because they can count on him to take good care of Befumo, who used to be an indie wrestler 20 years ago.

Befumo is one of "the Costco guys," and I am under the impression that the guest timekeeper will be "the Rizzler." I don't know who the fuck these people are. I assume this is sort of like when Wrestlemania 2 proudly featured such meme-worthy guest stars as the "Where's the Beef?" lady and the "Where's Herb?" guy. Anyway, I accept this match is not for me and I'll probably just skip it.

Deonna Purrazzo vs. Anna Jay - Another pre-show match. Anna had been feuding with AEW women's world champion Mariah May, but now she's out of title contention. Purrazzo has been setting up sort of a mafia gimmick with Taya Valkyrie, and I suppose she's annoyed Anna didn't accept their offer to help her in Mariah feud. I'm pretty sure Deonna's in this match mainly because the show is in her home state, so she should probably win.

Buddy Matthews vs. Dante Martin vs. Komander vs. The Beast Mortos - This is a four-way match on the pre-show; the first man to score a fall on any opponent will win. Doesn't seem to be any story here; it's just four guys who can run around and do cool flips. Works for me. I'd like to see any of these four get their hand raised, but I get the feeling Buddy is the one they'd want to push.

I'm pretty confident that this is going to be a good finale but -- at the same time -- as far as the whole "expect the unexpected" thing goes, the cast said the exact same thing about the s2 finale and the "unexpected" ended up being them burning the Menkie's results in a pizza oven and pw running to kiss each other while clown-esque music played in the background -- so, I'll believe it when I see it.

Ultimately, the only two things I'm really not expecting are 1. a Rina kiss (I know Kristoff & Anna kiss in the musical, but I'd be willing to bet they cut that part out) & 2. Some kind of HSM-related cameo (not Corbin) to set up the s4 storyline of the OG HSM cast filming a 4th movie at East High...but I guess, in order for it to be truly unexpected, it would have to be something I can't even fathom as a possibility.

No matter what happens, I can almost guarantee you that I'll be an emotional wreck by the end of it.

Hi! For your research on premium themes maybe it would be great to run a poll to have an insight on the best interests of those users who are willing to buy a theme. Just a suggestion, it could also be in conjunction with bigger accounts in the theme-making scene like Theme-Hunter or CodingCabin so that the data/result can be shared to the theme-making community. It's like managing expectations on how the theme would perform... As someone who has bought quite a few themes, here are some of the things that influence me on the purchase: - the branding of the theme-maker, how they present the theme - most important features for me are responsiveness + accessibility - the theme can be used for any blog, from text-heavy to media heavy I try a lot of themes and only a few of them are relatively easy to customize. Like, they are so good on the preview, but it's hard to personalize (choose colors) and make them pretty, haha. So maybe offering "done for you" palettes for customization will be nice.

Wow, what a piece of great advice! You're right, I think it's best to run a poll first to get an insight from those users who are willing to buy a premium theme. I honestly still have no idea what theme to make (the features that the general public wants, the design, or anything else).

Speaking of running a poll on a bigger account, I'm actually one of the admin at theme-hunter and I am wondering if the followers on that blog are willing to spend their time to take a survey. I will....try to contact the other admins if it's allowed or not (nervously sweating)

Interestingly enough, one of my fellow theme makers also previously did a Tumblr theme maker survey in 2017 and the data is available here (it looks like the data cannot be loaded at all due to the sheets API for v3 that has been turned down, so unfortunate. And I can't contact her directly since she's been inactive for so long).

By the way, after a few attempts I was able to see the raw data here, I'm glad it was set to public so I can share this publicly (I imported her data into my personal Airtable below).

I really need to turn this raw data into a chart for an easier read but I currently don't have time.

Also interesting point you've brought here. Responsiveness and accessibility are indeed a must for the theme, I'm still trying my best to incorporate this when it comes to creating a Tumblr theme for public use.

Yes, I agree with you about making the theme that is easily customizable. I think the fewer options the better (in terms of colors?). Since I used to think the more colors the better but as you said, choosing colors to make it pretty is quite hard haha.
